TransLink installs next-bus screens at UBC Exchange

Bay 2 at the UBC Exchange with the new next-bus screens

New screens provide improved real-time transit information for customers

TransLink has installed new screens throughout UBC Exchange to improve real-time transit information for customers. Following a complete renovation to live customer communication technology at SkyTrain stations, UBC Exchange is the first bus exchange on our system to receive similar technology that tells customers when their next bus is arriving.

“Quality customer communication is vital to customer experience, and these new screens will greatly enhance trip planning through real-time bus information,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “Serving more than 17,000 people on an average weekday this year, UBC Exchange is one of the busiest bus exchanges on our system and this technology will enhance the commute of so many students, faculty members, and visitors.”

Customers at UBC Exchange will find new screens integrated into bus stop poles throughout the exchange and a centrally located digital information board displaying live system-wide transit information.

The new screens provide:

  • Full-colour LCD backlighting with larger, clearer text than regular bus stop signs.
  • Text-to-speech audio for the visually impaired.
  • Enhanced and backlit bus stop and route numbers.
  • A range of transit information including next-bus information, route changes, and delays.

“We were very excited to hear about the installation of real-time transit information screens being brought to UBC Exchange,” says AMS Vice-President External Affairs, Saad Shoaib. “These new information screens, with text-to-speech technology for the visually impaired, will allow thousands of students to track, in real-time, when their bus will be arriving and departing. It is essential that we continue to enhance the UBC commuter experience by providing those who commute to and from our campus with accessible and reliable transit solutions. We see this TransLink initiative as a great step in making transit more accessible and efficient.”

Enhancing customer communication has been a major priority for TransLink. Other recent customer communication upgrades on our system include:

  • The installation of new real-time information displays on Expo/Millennium Line platforms and station entrances.
  • Improved speakers and PA systems on Expo/Millennium Line trains and stations.
  • The installation of real-time bus information at all RapidBus stops.

These next-bus screens were installed through TransLink’s Next Bus Digital Screen Pilot. Over the next year, TransLink will gather customer feedback and evaluate the technology before possibly installing these screens at other high-frequency bus exchanges in the future.

Good though next is to replace those e-paper displays on RapidBus stops with these new screens so reading next bus times in the dark is easier.

They should make the fonts bigger so they are easier to read from further away. Apart from that minor fix, I think its a good idea.

' src=

I hope these show real-time departures, not arrivals. If the bus is going to dwell at the stop for any appreciable period of time, as should be the case at a terminus like UBC, departure times are far more helpful.

Hey Ian, yep these are departure times listed!

Version 5.15.16

The eclipse has passed. The sun has incinerated the last remaining snowflakes of Canada’s winter. Which means Montreal’s super cyclists have escaped from their exercise-bike-equipped basements and taken back the smooth tarmac of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve from the F1 racecars. Sometimes we ride down on our fixed gear bikes to watch the roadies pedal in circles for hours and hours in their skintight suits, like they’re training to be the prettiest horse at the Kentucky Derby. Back home at Transit HQ, we’ve made the usual spring cleaning adjustments, and more: - We’ve added bikeshare fare info to the app (in select cities, more to come) so you can see how much a ride on those metal tanks will run you - New iOS emojis have been christened and added to our GO nickname generator - Real-time data for nearby lines should now load a picosecond or two faster (by prioritizing downloads for visible lines first, and then downloading real-time for ones further away as you scroll down the list of lines) - Other bug fixes and aerodynamic improvements Rate us five stars to put Sriracha in the roadies’ bike bottles for extra motivation.

TransLink ridership rebounds to pre-pandemic overcrowding levels

Population growth led to a 20% surge in transit ridership last year

Newton Exchange crowding

April 30, 2024

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC – New data from TransLink shows that Metro Vancouver’s strong ridership recovery and population growth has led to unprecedented overcrowding for bus riders, which has now returned to what the region experienced prior to the pandemic.

TransLink 2023 overcrowding by season

This data is part of the newly released 2023 Transit Service Performance Review (TSPR) which details last year’s ridership trends across Metro Vancouver.

“Metro Vancouver’s population is growing rapidly, and so is crowding on our buses,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “The 2024 Investment Plan will provide important short-term relief for customers, but we need commitments for long-term support that will help us keep up with population growth.”

TransLink is addressing overcrowding in the short-term through the recently approved 2024 Investment Plan , which is a stopgap plan to increase bus service on the 60 most overcrowded bus routes, expand bus service hours, increase Canada Line frequencies, enhance late-night HandyDART service, and provide earlier SeaBus sailings.

Longer-term, more investment is needed to address TransLink’s structural funding gap and to progress major transit expansion through the 10-Year Access for Everyone Plan .

2023 Systemwide Trends

  • The equivalent of one-third of Metro Vancouver’s population used transit at least once per week to move around the region.
  • Annual journeys across the system totalled 233.24 million in 2023, a 20.5 per cent increase over 2022.
  • In fall 2023, TransLink served 430,000 different customers on an average weekday, and approximately 900,000 different customers per week.

TransLink boardings 2023

Sub-Regional Trends TransLink ridership grew by 20 per cent in 2023, which varied based on sub-region. The sub-region with the strongest growth was the Southeast sub-region, which includes Delta, Langley City, Langley Township, Surrey, and White Rock.

Ridership growth by Sub-Region, Fall 2023 compared to Fall 2022

TransLink subregional ridership growth

HandyDART Trends TransLink is also releasing a separate deep dive into 2023 HandyDART service through the annual HandyDART Service Performance Review . Some key findings include:

  • In 2023, 1,176,000 HandyDART trips were delivered, up 22 per cent from 2022.
  • HandyDART customers continued using the service for critical services like dialysis treatments (14 per cent of trips), day programs (35 per cent of trips), or other medical appointments (16 per cent of trips).
  • 99.6 per cent of trips requested by HandyDART customers were delivered in 2023.
  • HandyDART’s on-time performance continued to be strong, with 91 per cent of all trips arriving on-time.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

translink trip planner next bus

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

translink trip planner next bus

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

Via Vladimir

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

translink trip planner next bus

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.
