 Batangas Tourist Spot

Here’s your updated Batangas Tourist Spots | Travel Guide.

About Batangas Tourist Spots

I have been to a lot of places, both international and local. As like what most travelers do, I also have some favorites out of all the places that I got to visit. Several factors affect such choice of favorite. In my case, it is more of the convenience in traveling to the place and the places or specific tourists spots to visit.

In the Philippines, my favorite place to go to whenever I feel the urge to take a break in Batangas. Found in the southern part of Luzon , this place with a total of 31 municipalities and three cities is more than what we can imagine. It is surrounded by water, making it a hub for those who would like to experience beach life or a marine adventure. Thus, one may find himself/herself very delighted with the extraordinarily diverse and rich marine resources that Batangas is filled with.

The language that is widely used by the Batangueños (residents) is Tagalog, whereas English is also widely understood by all. So, going here will not really be a hassle on the aspect of language since one may use his/her local language in conversing with the locals. The sweet and welcoming personality that the locals possess, it is inevitable that visitors and tourists alike fall in love with the place.

The distance from Metro Manila going to Batangas is not that far. In about 2 to 3 hours, you can already reach your destination. With all the activities that place can offer such as diving and swimming to different beaches, playing golf, wakeboarding, surfing, and jet skiing. For a much adventurous part, you can also do some cave exploration in the area.

As for festivities, the lively and vibrant personality of Batangueños can be felt with the way they celebrate their special events. They have the famous Parada ng Lechon (Parade of the roasted pig) and the Tapusan in Alitagtag whereas the teenagers of the province are dressed at their best and take part in the public procession. Celebrating with the locals with these festivities is much easier because of the easy access in going here as well as the available port, which serves as the center of trading in the entire Calabarzon region.

In whatever area of the place or any Batangas Tourist Spots, the beach will always be there to give you a fantastic vacation experience. This is the reason why perhaps a lot of tourists flock the area every summer season because they would like to get their annual dosage of Vitamin-sea! If you haven’t been here, then this is the time that you have to give it a try, or a stop instead.

How to Get to the Place and See Batangas Tourist Spots

If you are up to some adventure, there are two alternatives which you could choose from in heading here. First is the road via Sta. Rosa to Nasugbu. This will take you the area of Tagaytay, Calatagan, Lemery, Lian, and Nasugbu. The second alternative is via Star Highway to Lipa route. Through this road, you can reach Anilao, Bauan, Mabini, San Juan, Laiaya and Lipa City.

Calatagan, Batangas  [Batangas Tourist Spot]

Batangas Tourist Spots

Batangas is famous for its beaches, recreational areas, and other tourist spots. The province is near Metro Manila, making it one of the top destination areas for those who live in the city. A lot of these has become crowded over time, yet there are still those that seem to be under the radar of many tourists. Here is the list of some of those places in Batangas.

BATANGAS BEACHES / RESORTS [ Tourist Spot]

Masasa Beach

If you want to experience the common life of people who live by the beach, Masasa Beach is the best place to do it. They have nipa huts that you can rent and you can also do activities like swimming, snorkeling, and hiking in the area. Located in Barangay Masasa of Maricaban Island, Tingloy, you can reach the beach by riding a bus to Batangas Grand Terminal, then a jeepney to Anilao or Talaga Port. From there you need to ride a boat heading to Tingloy Port. When you reach Tingloy Port, you can ride a tricycle to reach the place where you will stay.

Sepoc Beach by Eagle Point Resort

Another beautiful beach in Tingloy is Sepoc Beach. The area is private since it is owned and managed by Eagle Point Resort. The resort has its own viewing deck, restrooms, and beach center, making it convenient for tourists. This destination can be costly since you would also need to pay for accommodation, and if you decide to take a tour and diving package.

ISLANDS [Batangas Tourist Spot]

Fortune Island

Located in Barangay Bucana, Nasugbu, the island is close to the mainland and you can get here by getting on a bus that is headed to Nasugbu, riding a tricycle to Fortune Island Resort in the mainland, and then taking a ride on the resort boat that will take you to the actual island. The island is known for their Parthenon-inspired structures, San Diego Warship Museum, lighthouse, and the wreckage of a Volkswagen minibus and freight ship. If you wish to visit this place, make sure to pack everything you may need since the island lacks restaurants and shops.

For the experienced divers, Isla Verde is a place that must be visited for their diving sites. They also have the Cueva Sitio cave and Mahabang Buhangin white sand beach that tourists can enjoy. You can also try their Pakaskas, a local sweet delicacy, or even buy products that are made of Buri. The countryside life on the island will feel refreshing for those who live in the city. To get to Isla Verde, ride the bus that leads to Batangas City Grand Terminal, then ride a tricycle to Tabangao Port. The public boat ride from Tabangao going to Isla Verde is only available at 9 AM, or you can ask the resort you are staying at to arrange a boat ride for you.

LIGHTHOUSES [Batangas Tourist Spot]

Malabigro Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Malabigro)

The lighthouse was built in 1891 in Lobo, and it is a National Historical Landmark that is still used to guide seafaring vessels. The lighthouse also has a staircase at the back that will lead you to Malabigro Beach. It is a great place for sightseeing that will only cost you transportation. You will need to ride a bus to Batangas City, drop off at Balagtas Junction, then ride a jeepney to SM Batangas up to Lobo Jeepney Terminal. From there, ride the jeepney heading to Lobo town proper, and finally, hire a tricycle that can take you to and from Malabrigo Lighthouse since public vehicles rarely pass by.

Cape Santiago Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Santiago)

One of the 24 lighthouses that were built during the Spanish era, Cape Santiago Lighthouse holds important history in the maritime history of the Philippines. The lighthouse is in Calatagan, you can get there by riding a bus in Pasay Rotonda or a van in from MRT Taft or Metropoint Mall, Pasay. Then ride a tricycle from Calatagan Public Market. This place is best experienced with the stories and guide of Kuya Junior, the caretaker. You can contact him through his mobile, +63 919 8416486.

OTHER  BATANGAS TOURIST SPOTS | THINGS TO DO

San nicolas eco-tour [batangas tourist spot/attraction].

If you want to go to Taal Volcano Island, the San Nicolas Eco-tour should be on the top of your list. Part of the tour is bird watching in a Bird Sanctuary, and the Lava Walk (not to be mistaken for Catriona Gray’s “Lava Walk”). The Lava Walk pertains to the path that was built over the trail of black lava from the eruptions of Taal Volcano during the 1960s to 1970s. If you get hungry, you can bring your own food or head to Pansipit River and eat a “boodle” lunch on a raft that is anchored in the middle. You can book the tour and lunch with the Municipal Tourism Office of San Nicholas, Batangas through their Facebook or Ms. Grace Lopez with this number: +63 997 5470608.

Kapusod Treehouse [Batangas Tourist Spot/Attraction]

Experience the ecological living at Kapusod in Sitio Lipute, Barangay Kinalaglagan, Mataasnakahoy. They have different kinds of accommodations varying from treehouses, Earth Dome, or Kubokas. The treehouses provide a wonderful overlooking scenery of Taal Lake Protected Landscape. A trip to this place is both fun and educational. To get to Kapusod, head to SM Terminal in Tambo by riding a Lipa-bound bus, then ride a jeepney with the Mataasnakahoy signage, get off at the 7/11 convenience store, and finally ride a tricycle that can take you to Pusod TLCC. If you are commuting at night, opt for the private transport service of Kapusod that is in Tambo and Batangas Pier. That option is costly but definitely safer for night travelers.

Marian Orchard [Batangas Tourist Spot/Attraction]

A journey of meditation, reflection, or peace, you can do those activities in the Marian Orchard of Balete Road in Barangay Malabanan, Balete. To reach the place, ride the bus heading to Lipa or Batangas City, get off at Levitown in Marawoy, then ride a tricycle or jeepney to Marian Orchard. You can take pictures of the lovely gardens, or spend a silent time to find peace with prayer, people are welcome to the Marian Orchard. Just remember to respect and follow the house rules to preserve the solemnity of the Marian Orchard. They are open every day from 7 AM to 7 PM, but their entrance gate closes at 5 PM. They have Catholic Mass that is held from 4 to 5 PM every Saturday, Sunday, and first Friday of the month.

Il Capo: A Gentleman’s Barbershop [Batangas Tourist Spot/Attraction]

For those men who want to be treated like a boss, head to Il Capo that is located at Hotel 1925 in Pilahan Street, Sabang, Lipa. In this place, you will get a great haircut and a drink to enjoy with it. Their services can cost around Php 700 to Php 1,000. 10. Fantasy World

15 Places to visit in Batangas Batangas Tourist Spot9

It may sound creepy but this place is an abandoned amusement park. And yes, it’s a popular tourist spot in Batangas as well. But why? Simply because Fantasy World is a paradise indeed for those who want to experience a Disney-like adventure. Inside, you’ll find a very beautiful and colorful castle that would make you feel like a royal walking around it through a stunning garden.

But why was it abandoned? This supposed-to-be amusement park was built in 2001 with the aim to rival Disney land. However, it was not completed due to financial problems. But that doesn’t stop people from going here because of the beautiful surroundings and positive energy it brings.

Although no rides or attractions are working, the Fantasy World remains a popular destination for those who love photography. The whole area is very picturesque that photographers would love to wander around here.

11. Calatagan

15 Places to visit in Batangas Batangas Tourist Spot10

Another municipality in Batangas has tons of lovely beach resorts. Calatagan is now getting popular as a location for company outings and weekend getaways in the Philippines due to the availability of beaches in the area.

If ever you’re in Batangas, you might want to include this in your itinerary. Unlike, Anilao and Laiya, Calatagan is less crowded. However, its beach resorts can rival those that are found in the two municipalities that I just mentioned.

Suggested Tour: Stilts Calatagan Day Tour

13. Mountain of Salvation

This is where the said apparition of the Blessed Mother of Love, Peace, and Joy occurred. A lot of people claimed that going here would be a unique and sacred experience because of the different kinds of feeling it brings.

Because of the said apparition of Mother Mary, the Mountain of Salvation became popular among devotees. The road to the Mountain is steep, some pilgrims got lost on their way to the mountain even though they have complete directions. This is a popular wedding venue in Batangas. The view from the chapel is magnificent! Given the fact that it’s located on a hill, the surroundings are all very picturesque. Taal, Batangas Tourist Spots and Travel Guide

by thepinay solobackpacker | Feb 13, 2014 | Batangas , Philippines , Travel Guide | 2 comments

The unassuming town of Taal in Batangas province draped by well-preserved colonial-era houses exudes a timeless beauty and a graciously chilled atmosphere.  Dubbed as the Balisong and Barong Tagalog Capital of the country, it has long been a magnet for pleasure seekers.  Originally founded in 1572 along the bank of the Pansipit River which traverses to Balayan Bay (now known as San Nicolas town), Taal was moved to higher ground to its now current site in 1754 when Taal volcano erupted. It was once one of the most powerful municipalities during the Spanish colonial era.

Here’s a list of interesting tourist attractions you can find in Taal, Batangas. I suggest dropping by at the tourism office near the Taal Cathedral and request for a map for easier navigation:

Old House of the Agoncillo Family  – You can start your Taal Batangas walking tour along Agoncillo Street after the Taal welcome arch. Nearby is the elegant heritage house of Agoncillo Family. Catch a glimpse of the bronze statue of Felipe Agoncillo, the husband of Marcela Agoncillo proudly standing at the garden.

Basilica de San Martin de Tours (Taal Cathedral) – Walk towards the main road leading to Taal town square crowned by the massive Basilica de San Martin de Tours. Hailed as the largest Catholic Church in Asia, for a minimal fee, you can also scale the bell tower housing one of the largest bells in the country. Nearby, you can also find other historical edifices such as Casa Real (Taal Municipal Hall) and Escuela Pia.

Doña Marcela Agoncillo Museum  – From Taal Cathedral, continue walking towards M.Agoncillo Street dappled by gorgeous heritage houses.  The eponymous seamstress of the first Philippine flag was raised in Taal and today, her house serves as a museum.  Entrance fee is free but donations are encouraged for its upkeep.

Casa Gahol  – It houses an interesting art gallery but unfortunately it was closed during my visit.

Villa Tortuga – You can arrange a private dinner in full colonial ambiance by booking through Camp suki website. Visitors are provided Spanish inspired costumes and take home personal antiqued sepia photos as souvenirs.

Don Leon Apacible Museum – This is the dwelling of General Emilio Aguinaldo’s finance officer- Don Leon Apacible. Open hours is from Tuesday to Sunday at 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Galleria de Taal  – A heritage house turned into a museum, admission fee is Php 50.  Daguerreotype cameras dating back to the 18 th  century as well as a collection of old photographs are proudly showcased here.

Chona’s Embroidery – Witness the art of handmade embroidery at this place. You can also find barong tagalog and hand-embroidered wedding gowns at Taal market.

Our Lady of Caysasay Shrine  – This modest chapel is the sanctuary of one of the earliest Marian images in the Philippines. Based on anecdotes, it was found by a fisherman named Juan Manicad at the nearby Pansipit River.

San Lorenzo Steps – At the back of the church you will stumble on  San Lorenzo Steps  named after the first Filipino saint.

Miraculous Spring – Can be quite hard to find as it is tucked at the backyard of the houses in the area.  Ask the locals for directions, it is located at the left side of San Lorenzo Steps (take only a few steps and look for a small mango tree with a dog house below) and follow the path. Ruins of an age-old chapel sit next to the miraculous spring where Our Lady of Caysasay is believed to have appeared.

Balisong Shops – Ride a jeepney from the town center and get off at Brgy. Balisong where balisong shops fringed the highway.

2. taal volcano.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Taal Volcano is one of the most picturesque Batangas tourist spots because of its distinctive lake setting. Taal Volcano is the second-most active volcano in the Philippines with its active state.

However, due to its eruption last January 12, 2020, the Taal Volcano has been closed in the meantime.

Before the eruption, this Taal volcano is a go-to place for local and foreign visitors. Back then, you could book a tour to have an up-close experience in Taal. You will be riding a boat going to the island volcano and trek or doing a horseback ride to the crater. Boating and kayaking are among the things worth trying too.

You can still appreciate the marvelous beauty of Taal from afar. The most famous overlooking spot is in Tagaytay in Cavite. If you stay in Batangas and wish to have a fantastic view, you can also book hotels in Talisay.

3. Fortune Island

Fortune Island turned into one of the picture worthy Batangas tourist spots, thanks to the ruins of the abandoned construction of resort in the lone island.

Spend a quick day tour at Fortune Island and marvel at its mysterious yet amusing landscape.

Due to freshwater scarcity, the supposed luxury development here resulted in the termination of the project. However, the remnants display a bizarre and unique view; the most famous are the Parthenon-inspired columns.

However, reaching the island takes about an hour of boat ride from Nasugbu. Tourists visiting Fortune Island can enjoy fun activities like cliff diving, swimming, snorkeling, and sightseeing.

Enjoy taking postcard-worthy images overlooking the vast sea. Here, you can appreciate a straightforward Athens vibe without breaking the bank.

Adventure seekers shouldn’t miss diving around the shipwrecks as well. You can also visit the lighthouse after a 30-minute of trekking.

When visiting this Fortune island, keep in mind to bring your provisions as there are no shops or amenities to use. While camping at night is allowed, you can also stay at the nearest Nasugbu beach resorts.

During summer, visiting Batangas tourist spots like Fortune Island is perfect for enjoying the sun and sea while avoiding the rough waves.

4. Malabrigo Lighthouse

For the lighthouse enthusiasts, the Malabrigo Lighthouse features eye-catchy astonishing architectural design.

The Malabrigo Lighthouse in Lobo, Batangas, is one of the two working lighthouses in the province.

Guiding sailors cruising the eastern section of Verde Island to Tayabas Bay, the lighthouse stands the test of time since 1891.

Spanish engineer Guillermo Brockman designed the Malabrigo Lighthouse. On the other hand, the construction was undertaken by a Chinese contractor named Jose Garcia.

In 1980, thru the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aid, the lighthouse had been automated.

In 2006, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared the site a National Historic Landmark, which boosts local tourism as a quick addition to your countryside Batangas tourist spots itinerary.

Today, the Pavilion’s Victorian-inspired architecture and the great lighthouse pave the way for tourism in Lobo. It is a perfect spot to do some creative shots while overlooking the majestic bay.

Behind is a stair pavement leading to the beach. Although pebbles spread throughout the shoreline, the place is still a nice place to have a quick retreat.

5. Caleruega Church

travel brochure batangas tagalog

One of the famous Batangas tourist spots for intimate occasions like weddings, baptismal, or retreats is the Caleruega Church .

Situated in the hilly eastern portion of Nasugbu near Tagaytay, many consider this a side trip during their Tagaytay tours.

Well-maintained plants and trees surround the complex. On the other hand, the chilly climate complements the serenity and cleanliness. Besides the beautiful small church, tourists will also love to explore the gardens, hanging bridge, and a souvenir shop.

As you descend from the church, you can see a display of a wooden Station of the Cross. Near the 12th station, you can spot a cafe for quick bites.

There is also a koi pond with towering trees and bushes along its perimeter, keeping the area cool. Besides, a metal handrail and wooden steps let you walk around the pond safely.

One can, indeed, find peace and solemnity in visiting Caleruega. The blooming flowers and whispering trees make you commune with nature, even for a short time.

6. Masasa Beach

Contrasting colors of water and coastline in Masasa Beach; one of the favorite Batangas tourist spots that magnets beach lovers during the weekend.

Tingloy seems to be a dormant municipality until its Masasa Beach catches the shifty eyes of adventure seekers and becomes one of the frequented Batangas tourist spots.

If white sand and clear blue waters are your concepts of a perfect summer destination without breaking the bank, Masasa Beach got your back.

Aside from swimming, tourists can also try snorkeling and island hopping. Besides, you can also trek to the island’s highest point for a rewarding panoramic view.

Living the island life, you can camp in the allotted space front of the beach. Since hotels are still unavailable, many transient houses and ins accommodate travelers.

Reaching Masasa Beach starts with an hour of boat ride from the port of Anilao to Tingloy. After that, you can ride a tricycle going to where you are staying.

Experiencing Masasa Beach is ideal for group travelers spending their long weekends. You can save more on boat rides, accommodations, and deals for water activities.

There is a Chapel of Lights as well, where you can light small candles in varying colors and say those little prayers. Likewise, you can bring home some holy water at the Holy Water Sanctuary. Make sure to bring with you your glass container, though.

The church offers masses every day, and it is best to attend the first mass to avoid the crowd. Keep in mind that parking spaces can be a challenge during peak season.

One of the beginner-friendly hiking destinations in Batangas is Mount Batulao. When looking for a quick yet fun outdoor Batangas tourist spots to fill your schedule during the weekends, visit Mount Batulao.

Although the trails are beginner-friendly, expect some courses to challenge you as you ascend to the summit.

Appreciate the lush green fields around mountain slopes while making your way to the summit. While January to February make a great hiking experience, dry during the summer and wet for the rest of the year, you can still expect unpredictable weather atop.

Note that outdoor Batangas tourist spots like hiking Mount Batulao require a local guide so that you can make the most of your hiking journey.

One of the iconic landmarks in Batangas is the Taal Volcano. Known as the smallest active volcano in the world, Taal Volcano is a sight to behold.

Nestled within a lake, it offers a unique, picturesque view that leaves tourists in awe. But the beauty of Taal goes beyond what meets the eye.

Taal Volcano and its surrounding lake is a place of rich biodiversity. It’s home to various species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. But it’s not just a place for nature lovers. Adventure seekers will also have a blast trekking the volcano. The journey may be challenging, but the panoramic view at the top is worth every step.

Nearby, you’ll find the town of Taal, where you can take a step back in time. Known for its well-preserved Spanish colonial houses and the largest Catholic church in Asia, the Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours, Taal town is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

Staycationers, as we explore more of Batangas, we’ll discover that it’s not just about the places, but also about the experiences that make every trip memorable.

Fortune Island: An Adventure Like No Other

If you’re a fan of Greek mythology, you’ll love our next destination – Fortune Island. Known for its Greek-inspired architecture, Fortune Island gives you a taste of Greece without leaving the Philippines.

But there’s more to Fortune Island than its iconic pillars. It’s also a great spot for snorkeling and diving, with its clear waters and abundant marine life. And if you’re into photography, you’ll surely love the breathtaking views of the sunset and the ruins.

Just a heads up, Staycationers, visiting Fortune Island is a bit of a challenge due to its remote location. But as they say, the best places are often hidden. And trust me, Fortune Island is worth every bit of the journey!

Sepoc Beach: Batangas’ Hidden Gem

Tucked away in Maricaban Island is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered – Sepoc Beach. With its white sand, clear waters, and serene ambiance, Sepoc Beach is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to explore the nearby Sombrero Island. Known for its hat-like shape, Sombrero Island is another great spot for snorkeling and diving.

Masasa Beach: The Unspoiled Beauty

Staycationers, if you’re looking for an unspoiled and less commercialized beach, then Masasa Beach is the place to be. Located in Tingloy, the only island municipality in Batangas, Masasa Beach offers a refreshing break from the usual crowded beaches.

Its pristine white sand, clear turquoise waters, and stunning rock formations make it a favorite among backpackers and budget travelers. But it’s not just the beach that’s worth exploring. A short trek from the beach will lead you to a hidden treasure – the Masasa Rock Formation, a natural masterpiece sculpted by the elements over time.

Just a friendly reminder, Staycationers, let’s keep Masasa Beach clean and beautiful. Practice responsible tourism by picking up your trash and respecting the local community.

Laiya: The Perfect Getaway

Next on our list is Laiya, a popular beach destination in San Juan, Batangas. Known for its long stretch of white sand beach and crystal-clear waters, Laiya is the perfect getaway for families, friends, and even solo travelers.

Laiya offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly resorts to luxury ones, catering to different types of travelers. And with various water activities available, such as jet-skiing, banana boat riding, and snorkeling, there’s never a dull moment in Laiya!

But what I love the most about Laiya is its vibrant local scene. Here, you can savor the fresh catch of the day, try the famous Batangas lomi, and even interact with the friendly locals. Indeed, a trip to Laiya is not just about the beach, but also about experiencing the local culture.

Mt. Maculot: A Trekker’s Delight

Now, let’s shift gears a bit, Staycationers. From the calming beaches, let’s take our adventure to new heights – literally! Welcome to Mt. Maculot, one of the most popular hiking destinations in Batangas.

Standing at 930 meters above sea level, Mt. Maculot offers a moderately challenging trek that’s perfect for beginners and seasoned hikers alike. The trail is well-established, with rest stops along the way where you can catch your breath and enjoy the scenic views.

But the real reward is at the summit, where you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking view of Taal Lake and Volcano. And if you’re up for more adventure, you can take the Rockies route, which leads to a rocky cliff that offers an even more stunning view.

Just a word of caution, Staycationers, always prioritize safety when hiking. Wear proper gear, stay hydrated, and never leave your trash behind.

Mt. Batulao: A Hiker’s Dream

Last but definitely not least is Mt. Batulao, another favorite among hikers. With its rolling slopes, open trails, and cool breeze, Mt. Batulao offers a unique hiking experience that you won’t find in other mountains.

The trail to the summit is a mix of easy and challenging parts, with the final ascent requiring a bit of rock scrambling. But don’t worry, Staycationers, the view at the top is worth every sweat! Overlooking Batangas and Cavite, the summit offers a 360-degree view that’s simply breathtaking.

And the best part? Mt. Batulao is just a few hours away from Manila, making it a perfect day hike destination. So if you’re looking for a quick escape from the city, this is the place to be!

As we end our journey, let me leave you with this quote from Saint Augustine: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” So go out there, Staycationers, and start reading the rest of the book!

Top 13 Batangas Tourist Spots to Visit

I was a 21 years old Engineering student in May 2016, when a company came to our school looking for future employees. My friends and I went, took a few exams, got an interview, and in just a few hours was told we had a job waiting for me in Batangas.

Yup, I was hired. We were hired. Needless to say, we were ecstatic. Since we still wanted to take the board exam in October 2016, the company allowed us to do our review and take the exam first. By October, I was an official ECE Engineer! Wohooo! I now have a valid ID.

Since we were already hired in May, we only had to sign the contract to start working fully. On November 7, 2016, my friends and I were now working in Batangas. But what made me say yes to the job? Was it the salary?

No, I was receiving less than 15k a month.

It was Batangas in itself that made me say yes. Before going to Batangas, I googled the place and found a lot of beaches and tourist spots. Growing up in the mountains, I’ve always wanted to live in an area where the beach was only a few minutes away.

But to my dismay, the beach was two hours away. Despite that, my stay in Batangas consisted of frequent trips to the beach and a few more adventures in Laguna.

Here are some of the places worth checking out in Batangas and its surrounding areas that I was able to visit. All of these are just 2 to 3 hours away from Manila, and they’re pretty cheap too.

With all of these places in Batangas, there are still tons of destinations that I still have to visit and travel to. I even created a list. The ones mentioned above are just 25 percent of what I’ve written down. I think any person who’d go to Batangas would also fall in love not only with their tourist spots but with the people, too.

After staying there for more than a year, people now ask me if I’m from Batangas because of my accent whenever I speak in Tagalog. Not to mention, the ‘eh’ at the end of every sentence. Haha.

And when I’m in Batangas, I revert to speaking like a Batangueno changing some words:

  • From dito to dine
  • From ito to are
  • From ba to ga
  • From market to palengke (haha!)

The last part was one of the hardest parts for me since we, people from the highlands, prefer to use some English words.

All in all, staying in Batangas is one of my greatest experiences.

With the amazing locals, I found myself falling in love with this place.

If you’ve read my About Me page , you probably already know that I used to work in Batangas. I hail from the Cordillera mountains – Benguet to be exact. When you think about the distance between the two provinces, you’d be asking me what most people ask ‘Why go there?’. Why, indeed.

Road Trip Guide: Taal Lake Loop

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Taal Lake is the third-largest lake in the Philippines. Within the lake, you can find Taal Volcano, one of the smallest active volcanoes in the world. Most people admire panoramic views of the lake from Tagaytay City in Cavite, the most popular (and usually crowded) weekend tourist destination near Manila. Those who want to enjoy a more peaceful and serene trip can visit the towns of Batangas surrounding the lake.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Though I’ve been to Tagaytay loads of times, I’ve been wanting to explore more of the lakeside towns on two wheels. The Taal Lake Loop involves riding around the towns of Batangas surrounding Taal Lake. This can be challenging for cyclists because getting there and back involves a lot of uphill climbs and fun (but sometimes dangerous) downhills, but it’s a relatively easy route if you’re on a motorcycle.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Table of Contents

Where exactly is Taal Lake?

Though visible from Tagaytay City in Cavite, which has greatly benefited from tourism because of it, Taal Lake and Taal Volcano are actually located in the neighboring province of Batangas, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Taal used to be a much larger volcano, rising to 5800 meters, before volcanic activity reduced it to a lake. Present-day Tagaytay and surrounding mountains were part of the original rim. The lake now fills Taal Caldera, a large volcanic caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Depending on where you’re coming from, you can start your ride in any of the lakeside towns: Talisay, Laurel, Agoncillo, San Nicolas, Sta. Teresita, Alitagytag, Cuenca, Lipa, Mataas ba Kahoy, Balete or Tanauan. I read that there was a Taal Circumferential Road , but apparently that’s still in the planning phase. Coming from Tagaytay, Talisay is the nearest jump-off point. As of September 2019, not all towns are linked around the coastline yet. Here’s my suggested route.

Why it’s great for riders

For riders based in Manila looking for a destination for day trips and weekend rides, this is relatively near. In a way, riding around Taal Lake feels a bit like looping a small island because of the coastal feel of the roads, scenic views and provincial vibe. There are a lot of interesting historical sites to visit in the area. The roads are all paved. Because of the mountainous terrain of the area, you have to pass some challenging portions and twisties which always appeals to riders. Trips to the lake can also be combined with staycations in lakeside resorts, visits to Tagaytay or other top tourist activities like hiking to the crater lake.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

In terms of distance, the Taal Lake loop is just roughly over 100 km. By motorcycle, you can circle the lake in about 3-4 hours depending on your route, detours, length of stopovers and traffic. However, that doesn’t include the travel time getting to and from the area from Manila yet, which is a whole different story (see last section below).

Our start and endpoint for the Taal Lake loop was The Lake Park / Wakim Lake Resort in Talisay, Batangas. After driving from Manila with a stopover in Laguna for lunch, we arrived in Talisay around 2 pm.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

We just checked-in and left our bags, then started the loop ride at around 3 pm. I suggest you leave earlier or do this ride in the morning to maximize time and good light.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

From Talisay, we took a counter-clockwise route towards Laurel and Agoncillo, where I found the roads to be very nice and scenic. We stopped at a newly built fishport in Laurel. There was a helipad and small docking area with unobstructed views of the lake where we parked the bikes.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

It was a very pleasant and scenic drive through parts of the Taal Circumferential Road with a peaceful view of fishing boats and fish pens. I didn’t notice a lot of restaurants or eateries by the lake though, there’s still not yet a lot of development on this side as the road here is fairly new (about 2 years old).

travel brochure batangas tagalog

From the Circumferential Road, we could have bypassed the main Taal town proper and gone straight on to San Nicolas and Sta. Teresita through a diversion road, but I wanted to pass by the Taal Church, which is a major landmark of the town, so we had to deal with some light traffic getting in and out. We got to Taal town at around 4:30 pm.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

The Basilica de San Martin de Tours, or Taal Basilica, is said to be the largest church in the Philippines and in Asia, standing 88.6 meters long and 48 meters wide. The facade of the church was undergoing renovation during our visit as part of the church was damaged during an earthquake in 2017.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

There’s a landmark spelling out name in town in front of the church by a small plaza area. Some helpful vendors selling tawilis told us we could bring our motorcycles up just for photo ops and offered to take our picture, so we did just that.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Taal Heritage Town has that old-world charm similar to Vigan and Intramuros. The church is right across the Hall of the Municipal Government of Taal. There’s a row of ancestral houses, cafes and restaurants. Even the 7-Eleven convenience store near the plaza fits the vibe of the old houses.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

There are lots of places to museums and heritage houses to visit around the Taal Heritage Town that will appeal to history buffs. This includes the Galeria Taal Camera Museum, Apacible Museum, Casa Villavicencio, Wedding Gift House, Marcella Agoncillo Museum, White House and more.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Taal is known as the “Balisong and Barong Tagalog Capital of the Philippines.” You can spot roadside shops selling balisong (Filipino butterfly knife) in Barangay Balisong.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

From the Taal town proper, Googlemaps suggested we pass through Alitagtag, Cuenca and straight to high-traffic cities like Lipa, Malvar and Tanauan, but to be honest, there’s not much to see there in terms of scenery. It’s much better if you pass Mataas na Kahoy and Balete and then loop back to Talisay via Tanauan.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

If you have more time, you can visit the Pusod Taal Lake Conservation Center  near the shore of Taal Lake in Mataas Na Kahoy, which offers activities like kayaking and has a treehouse for overnight stays. We decided to skip it because it was getting dark and we’d been to these towns before and have biked around the towns of Balete from Malvar.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

We got back to Talisay around 7:30 pm right in time for dinner. Restaurants in the area close relatively early (around 9:00 pm).

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Hike to Taal Crater Lake

One of the reasons I wanted to base overnight in Talisay was the accessibility to the jump-off point for boat tours to the Taal Crater Lake. Hiking up to the crater lake on Volcano island in the middle of Taal Lake is one of the most popular/touristy things to do coming from Tagaytay. It’s been bugging me for ages that I’ve never been there. It’s a nice easy hike with rewarding views.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

TRIVIA: Most people confuse Binintiang Malaki for Taal Volcano, because that’s what’s most visible from various vantage points. The picture above is what you usually see in postcards, history textbooks, and Philippine currency. But according to local tour guides who offer boat tours, the real Taal Volcano actually looks something like this. The dormant Binintiang Malaki cone was the center of the 1707 and 1715 eruptions.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

The whole island that lies near the center of the lake is called Volcano Island. There are actually several different peaks and hiking trails on the island, including Mt. Taal, Mt. Balantoc and Binitiang Malaki.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

The trail to the crater lake via Talisay is very established, easy to hike and family-friendly. The hike is just 4km and takes most people about 45 mins. Seniors & children can even ride horses going all the way up to view deck if they get tired.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

The actual crater lake on Volcano Island contains its own tiny island called Vulcan Point. This makes it an island in the middle of a lake, in the middle of a volcano, in the middle of a bigger lake, in the middle of a bigger island (Luzon), in an archipelago, in the Pacific Ocean.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Volcano Island is inhabited, with most of the tour guides and their families settling there. Our assigned guide Charie said she’d been living there for 14 years. Apparently, when there’s a volcano warning, all the residents evacuate. I just hope they take the horses with them.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

We were told people could hike to the base of the crater lake itself from jump-off points in other lakeside towns. Those who want a challenge can hike via Balete (8km) or Alitagtag (18km). Those trails usually attract students or mountaineers. But for casual weekend travelers (especially those coming from Tagaytay) who just want to enjoy the view, the Talisay trail is the most convenient option.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Overall, it’s a scenic 30 min boat ride + 45-minute hike + 30 min boat ride back for a total of 2-3 hours. It’s a good half-day trip if you have the time to spare. It’s best to start early (around 7:00 -8:00 am) so it won’t be so hot during the hike up. Boat trips may be canceled if the waves are too strong (usually afternoons) if there’s a typhoon and if there are gale warnings.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

We availed of this tour from Precious Boat Station (The Gateway to Taal Volcano) in Talisay. There’s a barangay ordinance with fixed rates for the boats, which can be a bit expensive if there’s just two of you. It’s better if you go in a group to share costs.

  • Roundtrip boat ride – P2,000.00 (good for 2-7 pax)
  • Horseback riding fee – P500.00/person
  • Tourism entrance fee – P100.00/person
  • Local tour guide’s fee – P500.00 per group
  • Docking fee – P50.00/boat

Contact: Bryan Malvataan. 0917-2032792 / Leolyn Malvataan. 09173631251.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Precious Boat Station offers complimentary items like bottled water, buri hats, face masks (because there are sulfuric fumes), raincoats (you can return it if you don’t use it), free parking and fresh buko juice when you return.

Where to Stay

For this ride, we stayed at The Lake Park, Wakim Lake Resort in Santa Maria, Talisay, Batangas (8 km from Tagaytay). There are several lakeside resorts in the area, but I got attracted to the place because of the secure lakeside parking and price range. It’s good for those with private vehicles including motorcycles and bicycles who want lakeside parking with scenic views.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

The rooms are basic but decent and it’s a nice and quiet area. Check-in and check-out time is flexible. The data signal is a bit weak in the area (Smart was just Edge), but the resort has WiFi.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

They don’t have a restaurant, but there’s a common kitchenette where you can cook food, making it a good option for families and barkadas. You can buy water, sofdrinks and beer there by just getting these from their ref in the lounge area and listing it down (honesty system). Beer na beer!

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Their published rate for a room with private CR is P1,350 for 2, but they charge extra for use of electricity, so it came out to about P1,400+. They have bigger rooms for groups and families and you can rent out a whole weekend apartment.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Other options in the area include Balai Isabel or Oyo Balai Sofia across a gas station and near the junction to Tagaytay. You could also opt to stay along the lake in Mataas na Kahoy in Balete. If you want a quiet and unique place to stay, Taal Pusod Heritage Center has a treehouse by the lake. But it’s much quieter there and there are not a lot of places to eat nearby, so you may have to bring your own food.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Where to Eat

From Talisay, Tagaytay is just pretty near via the Ligaya Road. Tagaytay is a popular food trip destination for weekend travelers and families. Specialties include bulalo , tawilis, farm fresh food. Restaurants there can be more expensive and there are a lot of fast-food chains and big-name cafes like Starbucks that you regularly see in the city.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

If you just want to enjoy local eats and simpler fare, I’d say skip Tagaytay and sample the homegrown restos or smaller eatiers instead. There are several small eateries along the main road in Talisay serving bulalo, seafood, kambing, etc. Leonidas along the road is good for those on a budget.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Cafe Diem is a pleasant cafe that serves rice meals, pasta, breakfast dishes, artisanal breads, vegetarian options and homemade ice cream. It’s across the road from a gas station. Good for couples and families.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Terrraza Filipino Dining at Club Balai Isabel is a good choice for families and groups. Their servings are generous, but a bit on the expensive side. You can eat here even if you aren’t checked in.

How to get to Taal Lake from Manila (small displacement bikes)

Word of warning, the main deterrent for making this ride really enjoyable is having to go through the traffic-choked towns in and out of Manila to Talisay. While you can do this as a day ride, the traffic going there and back through the most direct route is the pits. Since small bikes aren’t allowed on Expressways, these are your options.

The “shortest” & most direct route

There are several suggested routes on Googlemaps when you click the “avoid highways and tolls” option. The most direct route involves passing through either Manila or C5 and Taguig to get to Imus, Dasmarinas and Silang going to Tagaytay, then go down to Talisay on Ligaya Road from there. Small bikes can also pass the service roads of Alabang, Muntinlupa, Sta. Rosa and Calamba to get to Talisay. If you’re coming from towns in the South like Paranaque, this is nearer. There are some alternative routes like C6 from Taytay and Daang Hari that can make the ride slightly better.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Based just on Googlemaps, that’s just between 80-100 kms. It sounds near, but the estimated travel time is over 4 hours. What the map does not show you is the horrendous traffic and terrible road conditions in highly urbanized areas like Manila, Las Pinas, Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas and all the service roads. Seriously, the majority of your ride will be weaving in between trucks and buses, which sucks out the joy of road-tripping. We took this route going back to Manila and I regretted most of it. The only interesting part was going up Ligaya Drive. Tagaytay and Silang were ok but it got worse and worse the nearer to Manila we got.

Ligaya Drive

From Talisay, we passed Ligaya Drive going up to Tagaytay. This is an 11.7 km long mountain road that’s listed as one of the most Dangerous Roads in the Philipines. It’s pretty narrow, with some very steep sections and about 15 hairpin turns.

I wish I could have stopped to take photos here, but I didn’t want to lose momentum. Please be careful if you’re riding here during the rainy season. There’s a view deck at the halfway point.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

The longer but more scenic route

Going there, we took a longer but much more scenic route through Marilaque, Pagsanjan, Tanauan, Bay and Laguna. This adds +1 hour of travel time, but I did not feel tired at all. If you’re after a nice long ride with scenic views, this route is much better. Since I live in the North area (Quezon City), I prefer passing this route just so I can avoid passing Edsa, C5 and Manila.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

If I were to do this again. I would pass the backroads going back. Yeah, I know it’s longer, but at least you enjoy the ride instead of being stuck in mind-numbing traffic with buses, slow-moving jeepney, swerving cars, and having to navigate through gutters and sidewalks. We had a nice lunchstop in Pagsanjan, and I thought the Makiling-Banahaw Geothermal Power Plant in Bay was just bizarre with all the pipes lining the road.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

While I know most riders would probably be satisfied with the loop ride itself, I highly recommend you stay overnight in Talisay, so you have more time for other activities and have more time for sightseeing.

Trip Summary

The distance according to Googlemaps estimate is lower, but based on my odometer reading, we traveled 429 km during this ride because we took the “long cut” / scenic route via Pagsanjan and Tanauan to get to Talisay and the shorter Tagaytay, Silang and Imus route back to Manila. Here’s the map route. It doesn’t seem right, but when I calculated distances, this is actually longer than Manila to Naga City (390 km).

travel brochure batangas tagalog

  • STARTING ODOMETER: 7,164  km
  • END ODOMETER:  7,593 km
  • TOTAL:  429 kilometers

Some lessons learned during the ride: shorter travel time on the map doesn’t mean it’s the best or most enjoyable. If you can take detours through barangay or diversion roads, take them. Getting to Taal from Manila and back takes a lot more effort than the actual Taal Lake loop itself. Traffic and bad road conditions can make driving in Manila feel like a battlefield. Ride safe!

Aah, but TAHAL VOLCANO is actally a super volcano. What you see in the middle of the lake is actually a venting cone. As soon as you ride down the quite sharp descent you enter into the depression and set foot into the crater itself. So big and so near to Manila it is. It is more like Yellowstone plus the monkeys…

Hi Ms. Kara,

This is a very nice adventure. Travelling for 429 kms. I am from Tanauan, Batangas and your feature is very detailed and very useful. My relatives read it and they would like to thank you for featuring Batangas as a whole in Taal you can try Adobo sa Dilaw which was also a favorite of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Since your using motorcycle you also turn right at Waltermart Darasa which will lead you to Padre Pio Shrine in Sto. Tomas, Batangas and go directly to Makban Power Plant. Hope you feature more of Batangas in the future. God bless.

Actually the tawilis which can only be caught at Taal Lake. According to my Lolo, Taal lake were once salt water as it is connected to Balayan Bay however prolonged volcanic activity causes spilled of tawilis to the lake and it also closes the channel that connects Taal Lake’s to Balayan Bay after a long time the lake became fresh water as we know today. Inevitably, there were marine fish species trapped inside the lake when the channel was blocked and reduced to what we know today as the Pansipit River. The tawilis was one of these. Rather than die out because of the changing properties of the waters it had to swim in, the tawilis instead adapted to the increasingly – again, over time – desalinated waters.

Really enjoy reading your adventure, very informative with lots of helpful tips.

Beautiful!! Great great job guys!! 🙂

This is soooo cool! The roads around Taal Lake, passable for Innova?

It’s located south of the National Capital Region (NCR). These 5 provinces of Calabarzon are where you can find some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Philippines, including mountains, volcanoes, hot springs, beaches, lakes, and many more.

City dwellers visit these places regularly because of their proximity to Manila, especially during the summer when it’s scorching hot. Everyone just wants to go away for a few days.

Here is a list of the attractions you can visit in the five provinces of Calabarzon.

Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine

This South Luzon province is where the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine can be found. This is the place where the Philippines declared its independence from Spanish Colonization took place. Both the natural beauty and man-made attractions of Cavite attract tourists.

Corregidor Island

Corregidor Hospital Ruins

Corregidor Island can be found in Cavite. It’s located at the entrance of Manila Bay and served as a military bastion. Its ruins can be seen up to this day. History says that this island was where they put coastal artillery to fight the warships trying to enter the Philippines through Manila Bay.

This tour gives an in-depth learning experience for those who wish to know about the history of the Philippines in that area.

Mt. Palay-Palay

Mc Pol Androuse Cruz in Mt Pico de Loro

This dormant volcano, which stands at 688 m (2,257 ft) above mean sea level, used to be called Pico de Loro because it has a monolith with the shape of a parrot’s beak. Many groups are offering guided tours of the mountain. Both beginners and advanced mountain climbers will enjoy the views of open waters and mountains nearby.

The province of Laguna is most known for being the birthplace of Rizal, but other than that, the place is endowed with several bodies of nature, eco-tourism spots, and health and wellness establishments.

Enchanted Kingdom

Enchanted Kingdom Rainy Days

EK is an old favorite, and even if it’s not as popular as before, this theme park makes everyone happy with its numerous rides like Up, Up, and Away which looks like you’re riding a hot air balloon; Xtreme Paintball Philippines and Rio Grande Rapids. The amusement park also has shopping facilities, dining stalls, shows, and entertainment venues.

Paete Church by Carlo Joseph Moskito via Wikipedia CC

The town of Paete is mainly visited because of its woodwork, but more than that, you can embark on gastronomic adventures by trying their local puto bumbong. There’s an old church in Paete with the same name that maintained its glory through the years.

The façade is made of complicated stone works, and upon entering, you’ll be greeted with red stone flooring and a dark wooden ceiling. There are several small statues of Saints and a bell tower.

Classic Bulalo

Batangas is known for its beaches, Kapeng Barako, Tablea, balisong, and many more. Verde Island Passage can also be found in Batangas. This is the center of the world’s marine biodiversity.

The water activities of Batangas are also being visited by many tourists around the country. Aside from its natural attractions and products, Batangas wows many with its special version of Bulalo.

Taal’s ancient town is where the well-preserved heritage houses and other establishments of the rich and famous people of a bygone era are located. There’s a park in the town called Taal Park where Basilica de San Martin de Tours stands.

Modern times have paved the way for shops like convenience stores, but this quaint place’s charm remains. You can also go on a walking tour around the area to buy embroidered piña fabrics as pasalubongs.

Everyone can go to the 14 Stations or hang their handkerchiefs and wish for something they genuinely want. There’s also a tiny shrine of Padre Pio, and visitors can climb the bell tower.

Rizal is a mountainous province in the Philippines located east of Manila. The highest points of Rizal offer a fantastic view of Manila’s business districts and Laguna de Bay at the Southeastern horizon of the province.

Rizal doesn’t have beaches, but the province has waterfalls, caves, and streams of water. Its location is not that far from Manila, so it’s easy to reach but far enough to enjoy peace and quiet.

Daranak Falls

Daranak Falls

Daranak falls is already a popular tourist spot in Tanay because of its green waters and lush backdrop. You’ll have to take a hike to reach this special place.

It isn’t a huge waterfall, but its allure comes from the beginning of the hike to the cute rock formations and of course, the stunning falls as the main event.

Pililla Wind Farms

Pililla Wind Farms by RMNSantiago via Wikipedia CC

Not as towering as the ones in Bangui, but the windmills of Pililla have their own appeal since it’s standing on top of the hills with a stunning view of Laguna de Bay.

The strong winds of Pililla make it the perfect spot for these wind turbines, which is responsible for about 150 Gigawatt hours of electricity each year.

The farthest province from Manila is also where some of the most amazing beaches, colorful festivals, delicious foods, mountains, churches, and heritage houses can be found. It’s a large province and can be reached from Manila in 4 hours or more.

Agawan Festival

Agawan Festival

The yearly festival celebrates Saint Isidore the Laborer, the patron saint of farmers and lover of the poor and animals. The locals put ‘pabitins’ or hang treats outside their houses where members of the parade and other crowds will try to take their pabitins, then the other members of the households will throw leafy foods outside. They celebrate this festival as a way to liberate their souls.

Foodie Tour

Pancit Habhab

The foods of Quezon are famous for their unique tastes. Lucban longganisa isn’t your typical sweet Filipino sausage; its taste falls on the garlicky and salty side.

Quezon also has its own version of pancit, pancit habhab, a type of Miki noodles cooked with sayote, pork meat, soy sauce, and vinegar.  Aside from these two, hardinera, Budin, and yema cake are the foods you should try when you visit.

Cagbalete Island

Cagbalete Island photo by Pansacola Beach Resort FB

White sand, turquoise waters, and calm waters that’s the promise of spending a day or two on Cagbalete Island in Mauban Quezon .

It’s a serene place with only a few locals that you can enjoy. You can go swimming, beach bumming, or strolling as much as you can. Some accommodations are available, but it’s still limited.

BAGUIO CITY TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

BAGUIO CITY TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

There were shooting stars.

I was a High School sophomore when I set foot in Baguio for the very first time. The details of the event are fuzzy now, but it was a Boy Scout-related trip. I was just a few steps to becoming an Eagle Scout then, which was something my friends and I had been working hard to achieve. To ensure I would be joining the trip, I had to work a little bit harder. My classmates didn’t know it then — they thought every penny I had for that trip was given — but I had to earn it by selling fishballs.

After over 10 hours of bus ride from Batangas, we finally reached Baguio at around midnight. In the middle of unloading our bags, my friends and I sat and rested on the base of flagpole. As we were having a conversation about the cold, shooting stars streaked across the night sky.

That was my earliest memory of Baguio City. Even now that the city has undergone a lot of changes and more cool, rustic towns have become accessible, I still find myself in a bus bound for Baguio again and again. It’s hard to forget something that left such a magical first impression. I mean, there were shooting stars.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING BAGUIO

Baguio was built as a hill station in 1900, at the start of the American Colonial Period. That’s why the names of many of the key landmarks sound western or American. Burnham Park was named after Architect Daniel Burnham, who planned the city; Wright Park after Governor-General Luke Edward Wright; Camp John Hay after John Milton Hay, who was President Roosevelt’s Secretary of State; and Bell House after General J. Franklin Bell. The Mansion, one of the city’s most recognizable buildings, was constructed to serve as the official residence of the Governor General.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Today, Baguio is the biggest city and the economic center of the Cordillera region. Despite being a resort city, it is highly urbanized, home to almost 350,000 residents, many of which are from surrounding towns and provinces who moved to the city for work or studies. It is this cooler attitude that makes Baguio a magnet for tourists trying to escape the searing heat of the lowlands, especially in the summer.

Long before Sagada and Kalinga entered the collective consciousness of tourists, Baguio City was the go-to destination in the Cordillera region. It is known by a number of nicknames including City of Pines and Summer Capital of the Philippines , bestowed upon it because it is perched in the middle of tropical pine forests around 1500 meters above sea level, ensuring cool, pleasant temperatures year-round.

Here are more things you need to know about Baguio City.

  • Language: The four most spoken Philippine languages in Baguio are Ibaloi, Kankana-ey, Ilocano, and Tagalog. But English is widely understood and spoken too.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of April 2019).
  • Modes of payment: Credit cards are accepted by many establishments but CASH is still king (and queen) in Baguio.

WHERE TO STAY IN BAGUIO

Baguio looks easy and simple on the map, but it is a lot more complicated in reality. But picture it this way: At the very center of the city is Burnham Park. Many of the key places of interest are located somewhere around it. Most key roads is somehow directly connected to it. Even jeepney terminals are easily accessible from the park.

Hence, if it’s your first time and you want to see the key attractions in the city, pick a place that is located near Burnham Park. It doesn’t have to be directly across the park. Even hotels that are just a short walk away will do. This area will be most convenient for you.

But if you’re after some peace of mind and you’re not here to go sightseeing, choose a hotel that is located away from Burnham Park and a little bit isolated from all the busyness. Baguio, after all, is still a bona fide urban hub, with lots of buildings and vehicles and people.

HOW TO GET TO BAGUIO FROM MANILA

Several bus companies ply the Manila-Baguio route. You can catch a bus at the following terminals:

  • Genesis Transport: Cubao
  • Dagupan Bus Lines: Cubao
  • PARTAS: Cubao and Pasay
  • Joy Bus (Genesis): Pasay and Avenida
  • Victory Liner: Cubao and Pasay

Baguio is only 4-6 hours away from Manila, depending on which part of Manila you’re coming from, which route the bus takes, and whether or not it makes a stop along the way. Regular buses usually take Dau Exit (NLEX) or Concepcion Exit (SCTEX) and make at least one stop.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

But higher end buses like Joy Bus and Victory Liner’s first-class service use NLEX, SCTEX, and TPLEX non-stop, cutting down the travel time to 4-5 hours. First class buses also have wider legrooms and free snacks.

When I go to Baguio, I usually book with Victory Liner. No particular reason, really. It’s just out of habit. Haha. So I’m most familiar with their fares.

CUBAO TO BAGUIO – VICTORY LINER Regular aircon: P485 First class: P800

CUBAO TO BAGUIO – JOYBUS Deluxe: P720 Premier: P740

PASAY TO BAGUIO – JOYBUS Deluxe: P730 Premier: P760

PASAY TO BAGUIO – VICTORY LINER Regular aircon: P496 First class: P800

For the schedule, check this website: VICTORY LINER & JOY BUS SCHEDULE .

From the new Victory Liner terminal, you can take a cab to your hotel. If your hotel is near Burnham Park, the fare should be around P70.

HOW TO GET AROUND BAGUIO

One thing that you as a tourist needs to know about Baguio is that attractions are scattered around the city in clusters. The problem is that these clusters are far from each other. Hence, it’s best to explore by cluster. There are two main modes of transportation:

  • Jeepney. The cheaper way to get around. If your hotel is near Burnham, you can easily find a jeepney. There are terminals just outside the park. Minimum fare is P8.50.
  • Taxi. The more convenient way. If you’re a group, it’s affordable too. Cabs in Baguio are much cheaper than in Manila, and taxi drivers are known to be honest and give exact change (unlike in Manila). Of course, there are also bad drivers, but they are more the exception than the rule. Flagdown rate is P35.

GrabTaxi works in Baguio, but the number of available cabs is very limited, so expect to wait a long time to book.

You can also travel on foot. Within the city proper, I usually just walk. But I have to warn you that it can be exhausting. Visitors usually forget that Baguio’s terrain is largely uneven, something that isn’t obvious if you rely on flat maps. But once you’re there, you’ll realize that walking around Baguio involves uphill climbs. If you’re not familiar with some short cuts, you’ll also find yourself walking long distances.

THINGS TO DO IN BAGUIO & LA TRINIDAD

Camp john hay.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

This is my favorite place in the city. When I was young and I conjured up images of Baguio in my head, they looked like Camp John Hay and its thick blanket of pine trees. It was established on October 25, 1903 as an R&R (rest and recreation) station exclusively for the US Armed Forces in the Philippines. At the height of World War II, it was bombed by the Japanese but fell back in the hands of the Americans in 1945. Almost 50 years later, it was turned over to the Philippine government, which transformed the site into a tourist site.

There’s a lot to enjoy here including the following:

  • Treetop Adventures, where you can enjoy thrilling rides like the Superman Ride (zipline), Canopy Ride, and Tree Drop (harnessed free fall).
  • Bell House, formerly the official vacation residence of the Commanding General of the Philippines. It now houses a museum featuring American colonial architecture.
  • Butterfly Garden, good to see if you’ve never been to any butterfly garden before or if you’re with kids. Otherwise, skippable.
  • Cemetery of Negativism, a symbolic site for the burying of negativities — thoughts, emotions, attitude.
  • Yellow Trail, aka Forest Bathing Trail, a 1.5km easy hiking path that will lead you through and around the pine forest. The trek takes around 2 hours. You can do it in 2 ways. The usual route is generally uphill, starting at Le Monet Hotel and ending at Scout Hill. If you don’t think you have the stamina, you can do it the other way around instead. (That’s what we did, LOL!) We thoroughly enjoyed it!

For more information about the places to visit here, read: THINGS TO DO AT CAMP JOHN HAY .

La Trinidad Strawberry Farm

Baguio is almost synonymous with strawberries, but the most visited strawberry farm is actually in La Trinidad, 30 minutes away. Here, you’ll find plots of strawberries alongside vegetables and flowers. You can buy strawberries here for P250-P300 per kilo. If you want to pick the berries yourselves, prepare to shell out additional P200.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Lying along the farm is a pasalubong center made up of several souvenir stores. If you get hungry, try the strawberry ice cream (which is really good) and strawberry taho!

Colors of Stobosa (Mural Houses)

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Not too far away from the strawberry field are the colorful houses of Stobosa. This community project is one of the newest attractions in La Trinidad. More formally referred to as Stobosa Hillside Homes Artwork, it is basically a cluster of hillside houses painted in various colors by the designers of Tam-awan Village. “Stobosa” stands for Stonehill, Botiwtiw, and Sadjap, the three sitios that make up the giant artwork.

Bell Church

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Just within walking distance of Stobosa Artwork is Bell Church, one of the most popular tourist sites in the Baguio-La Trinidad area. The Bell Church is a Chinese temple run and managed by a Filipino-Chinese religious organization, established by immigrants from Canton (Guangzhou) in 1960.

BenCab Museum

travel brochure batangas tagalog

BenCab Museum is actually located in the town of Tuba, but it’s just a short drive from the Baguio city center. The museum houses the works of Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, a National Artist for Visual Arts, and other Filipino contemporary art masters. Set amid relaxing greenery, the BenCan Museum is not just a place to appreciate art but also reflect.

Hours open: Tuesdays-Sundays 9am-6pm Last entry: 5:30pm Closed: Mondays, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Entrance Fee: P120

How to get there: From the public market, ride a jeepney bound for Asin. Fare is less than P20.

Tam-awan Village

Nicknamed “Garden in the Sky,” Tam-awan Village is a reconstruction of a traditional Cordilleran village set in a forest. Established by the Chanum Foundation in 1988, it aims to showcase the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the Cordillera and bring the region’s culture closer to more people while also promoting local artists. Currently, the village has Ifugao and Kalinga model houses, built using only traditional materials.

Entrance fee: P60

Burnham Park

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Most probably, Burnham Park is Baguio’s most well-known attraction. When you see it on the map, it doesn’t look much, but in reality, it is huge. Within its expanse are several smaller places of interest. The Melvin Jones Grandstand is the most visible, but if you walk around, you’ll also see the Children’s Playground and the Orchidarium, among others.

There’s also a lot of activities to enjoy here, mostly catering to families. You can rent a swan boat so you can paddle along Burnham Lagoon or you can rent a bike or go kart and ride around the park. Here are the rates.

Rental fees: Chopper (big bike): P75 per 30 minutes Go kart: P50 per 30 minutes Boat: P100 per 30 minutes (good for 5 pax) + P50 if with rower

Mines View Park

Another popular tourist spot is Mines View Park, so called because it overlooks the gold and copper mines of Itogon town below. The viewpoint is also a fantastic spot to watch the sunrise.

Unlike Burnham Park, the place can get crowded because the area isn’t that spacious. You’ll also find lots of souvenir stores around.

Botanical Garden

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Situated between Wright Park and Teachers’ Camp along Leonard Wood Road, the Baguio Botanical Garden is another popular destination in the city. It’s a great place to relax and surround yourself with trees greenery without going too far from the city center. This is also pretty vast, so expect a bit of walking.

Entrance fee: FREE

Wright Park

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Named after Governor-General Luke Edward Wright, Wright Park is a forested piece of land located just outside the Mansion. For tourists, it is the best site for horseback riding because of its proximity to the city center and the number of available horses to choose from.

Horseback riding rate: P200 for 7 rounds.

The Mansion

A short walk from Wright Park is the Mansion. Built in 1908, the Mansion served as the official residence of the US Governor-General in the Philippines. Today, it is the official summer palace of the President in the Philippines. Right across the Mansion is a long pond, the far end of which is a favorite photo spot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is the best time to visit baguio.

November to April , if you’re sightseeing.

Baguio enjoys cool temperature year-round, but of course, some months are better than others. November to April is the driest period, which is great if you’re planning on spending most of your time exploring. This means there is very little chance of heavy rain to put a damp on your itinerary.

travel brochure batangas tagalog

December to February is the coldest period and it will steadily rise until May, but it’s still pretty chilly especially at night.

If you love festivals, visit in February when the Panagbenga (Baguio Flower Festival) is in full swing and see the grand parade of flowers. But expect thick crowds everywhere.

June to September is the wettest period, not ideal for touring. But if you’re visiting Baguio to reflect, be alone, or try to finish writing something (true story, lol), then you might find the damp, foggy mornings to be inspiring.

What is the tipping custom in Baguio?

Just like in other places in the Philippines, tipping is not mandatory in Baguio. Tip only if you really enjoyed the service to show your appreciation.

Taxi drivers in Baguio are also known for giving exact change, which doesn’t usually happen in Manila. But if you want to tip, you can just round up the meter. For example, if the cost of the ride is P62 and you pay P70, you can tell the driver to keep the change.

What type of power plug / socket is used in Baguio?

Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Plug and socket Type A.

Zamboanga

Zamboanga City Travel Guide & Itinerary (Tagalog)

travel brochure batangas tagalog

Kaya kung nag-pplano ka na mag-travel ulit for the first time in over two years, isa ito sa mga destinations na puwede mong puntahan.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Zamboanga City

  • Location: Zamboanga City, Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula)
  • Nicknames: Asia’s Latin City, City of Flowers
  • Language: Chavacano o Cabacano ang most common na ginagamit dito, isang Spanish-based Creole na mix ng Spanish at ibang native lnguages.
  • Modes of Payment: Cash.

How to get to Zamboanga City

Ang travel time ay 1 hour and 40 minutes.

AirAsia Plane

Mayroon din silang Premium Flex kung saan may option kang palitan ang date at time ng iyong flight up to two times.

Upon Arrival at the Airport

Make sure to double check the entry requirements to Zamboanga at ang protocols depende sa origin mo bago ang iyong trip.

Zamboanga Airport to City Center

  • Tricycle: P20 for the first km, P5 per additional km

Where to Stay in Zamboanga

How to get around Zamboanga City

By public transportation.

Zamboanga Tricycle

To give you an idea, usually, nasa P40-50 per person ang bayad para sa tricycle ride.

Pink Beach Zamboanga

P300 ang rent sa bawat yellow boat at good for 2 passengers ito.
