Eclipse 2024 Countdown: What to know about Vermont traffic on April 8

Pretty soon, itty-bitty Vermont is going to feel much more crowded.

Leading up to the April 8 solar eclipse, nearly a quarter million visitors are expected to swarm the Green Mountain State due to its position within the “path of totality.”

To avoid the heavy traffic and overall chaos of the day, the Vermont Agency of Transportation advises Vermonters to “hunker down” and forego driving on April 8 if they can help it. Many northern Vermont schools and some businesses, for instance, are taking heed and closing for the eclipse.

For residents who still plan to brave the roads, however, here’s what you should know about traffic conditions on April 8.

What might Vermont traffic look like on April 8?

In preparation for the eclipse, the Vermont Agency of Transportation compiled a list of “assumptions” about the motor vehicle traffic expected on April 8.

Although some sources anticipate higher numbers, the agency said it foresees a maximum of 160,000 visitors (or roughly 60,000 additional cars) for the eclipse, with inbound traffic to trickle in over the course of two to three days prior to the event. Most outbound traffic will likely depart immediately once the eclipse concludes, though more than 14,000 vehicles may spend the night.

However, Vermont may end up seeing fewer visitors due to anticipated cloudy and rainy weather and because April 8 falls on a Monday.

According to the agency, most visitors will likely enter Vermont from the south, particularly from Boston and Worcester in Massachusetts and Hartford, Springfield, New Haven and Bridgeport in Connecticut.

Vermonters should also anticipate fellow drivers pulling off to the side of the road to watch the eclipse.

Which Vermont roads should I avoid?

Based on the above assumptions, the roads with the highest estimated traffic volumes likely include:

  • US 4 in Mendon, Bridgewater, and Woodstock
  • VT 103 in Ludlow, Clarendon, and Cavendish
  • VT 100 in Waterbury
  • US 5 in Brattleboro
  • I-89 from Exit 10 to U.S. Route 2 and the Champlain Islands
  • US 7 in Shelburne, Ferrisburgh, and Pittsford
  • Williston I-89 exit ramps, VT 2A, US 2
  • Burlington main local roads
  • VT 15 in Essex
  • US 2 and VT 117 in Richmond
  • I-91 in Rockingham
  • VT 9 in Brattleboro and Wilmington
  • I-89 in Waterbury, Middlesex, Montpelier, and Hartford

However, it should be noted that local and feeder roads may also experience delays and congestion should drivers begin to detour from the main roadways.

For more information about April 8 in Vermont, including traffic and weather, visit the state’s eclipse page .

How is Burlington handling traffic and safety during the eclipse?

Hotel reservations and airport data indicate that Vermont’s biggest city may welcome as many as 35,000 to 50,000 tourists for the eclipse, according to Obscura BTV .

How does Burlington Police plan to maintain traffic flow and safety?

According to last month’s Burlington Police Chief’s Report, there will be up to 40 police officers on duty. This is the same amount as the July 3 Fireworks celebration last year, minus the five additional officers Burlington police hired from adjacent agencies who will be serving in their own communities during the eclipse.

Eight police officers and five community service officers will manage shuttle bus lanes and street closures. One supervisor and four officers will handle non-event-related calls. All other officers are charged with providing security at eclipse events and manning the department’s Emergency Response Vehicle.

However, despite police preparations, Burlington residents should still expect to see traffic delays and potential emergency vehicle delays at minimum and “complete gridlock” at worst, depending on crowd size.

Local police say should crowds exceed 50,000 people, traffic will likely be unmanageable everywhere in the city regardless of their efforts. If crowds surpass 75,000 people, Burlington is likely to become gridlocked, and Interstate 89 and “major arteries” like Route 7 and Route 2 may shut down – making emergency response unguaranteed.

Information sheets displayed on a counter

Updated at 8:06 a.m.

GUILFORD — The Vermont Welcome Center at Interstate 91’s southern gateway has reported up to a threefold jump in visitor traffic preceding Monday’s eclipse.

The state’s most utilized rest area saw traveler numbers rise 200% Friday, from 612 a year ago to 1,825; then spike 225% Saturday, from 1,089 to 3,541; and increase 168% Sunday, from 1,837 to 4,924, tallies show. Visits to other state travel centers were also up, according to Vermont Emergency Management spokesperson Mark Bosma — particularly those in Sharon, Waterford and Bradford.

“It’s hard to tell if this is all eclipse driven or not, but the traffic heading north is tremendous,” said Lisa Sanchez, manager of the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services’ information centers division. “This is a perfect storm due to the fact that we had a foot and a half of fresh snow on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”

The state Agency of Transportation has estimated that up to 160,000 visitors may travel to Vermont in as many as 60,000 vehicles, all to join residents in seeing a partial eclipse starting Monday at 2:14 p.m., a 3-minute total eclipse in some parts of the state at 3:26 p.m., and then back to a partial eclipse until 4:37 p.m.

A state study conducted with the University of Vermont’s Transportation Research Center found that most drivers headed to Vermont would come from the south, particularly Massachusetts and Connecticut. Amy Tatko, a spokesperson for the state transportation agency, said Sunday that officials were also expecting an increase in volume from the west, given that eclipse-viewing conditions in New York were expected to be less optimal than in Vermont.

Then again, weekend travelers playing license plate bingo at the Guilford welcome center could spot every state along the East Coast, as well as such bonus points as Texas.

Bob and Barbara Gelmetti, two of many from the parking lot’s most represented state of Connecticut, booked a short-term rental in Barre a year ago after discovering hotel rooms along the path of totality in Burlington were already “cost prohibitive.”

“Why do people go to Times Square?” Bob Gelmetti said when asked for his reason for traveling. “To share the experience with others. This is an event.”

Traffic delays and other issues mark total solar eclipse day

travel conditions in vermont

Authorities on Monday reported traffic crashes and significant road delays across the country as thousands of people flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse – and then made their way home again.

Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were impacted by the flood of drivers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , a vast swath of the country – approximately 115 miles wide, crossing through 13 states – where people were able to view the total eclipse.

Traffic slowed on major highways in Indiana as the eclipse progressed Monday afternoon. State transportation officials posted video showing backups forming on Interstate 65 headed toward Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported. The Courier & Press in Evansville reported delays after the eclipse ended.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine posted on X that traffic on state highways was flowing but rest stops along interstates in the path of totality are at or near capacity.

Perrine said transportation officials planned to shut them down "once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse." One rest stop along I-74 near Veedersburg, northwest of Indianapolis, closed because it had reached maximum capacity from "eclipse viewing traffic."

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and was within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which included parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

"Crews estimate cleanup will take the majority of the day. Expect delays in the area and use extra caution. #trucking #eclipse," said a post on X by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation .

Multiple crashes were reported in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, which hosted several festivities and eclipse viewing events. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota. The wrecks shut down multiple lanes.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement around 9 a.m. local time.

Officials warn drivers of delays, dangers ahead of solar eclipse

In the weeks leading up to the celestial event, officials issued warnings about heavy traffic congestion and the danger of driving during the eclipse , including distracted pedestrians and the sudden change in light conditions. Eclipses have previously been tied with surges in traffic crashes, including fatal collisions.

In New York, extra troopers were staged throughout the entire state, especially in northern counties and cities, such as Buffalo, from which spectators can see a full eclipse, according to the New York State Police .

In Ohio, the state's Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission heavily staffed its toll booths, service plazas and maintenance buildings in anticipation of the eclipse, which it has designated as "a high-volume traffic event" like, for example, Thanksgiving.  The Ohio Emergency Management Agency estimates, for the solar eclipse, between 150,000 and 575,000 travelers will visit the state, which encompasses areas in the path of totality.

During the 2017 eclipse, congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

Maps show when and where Vermont's best solar eclipse views will be

By Terry Eliasen, Exec. Weather Producer

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 4:58 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BURLINGTON, Vt. - When the total solar eclipse takes place, one of the best spots to see this historic event will be in Vermont, where the weather looks to cooperate . Here's a map showing where totality will occur, and what time it will happen.

Vermont solar eclipse path of totality map

vermont-eclipse.jpg

The southern edge of the path of totality line passes right through the towns of Middlebury, Northfield and Barre. You will need to get just north of these areas.

Cities and towns that will see a 100% total eclipse include:

  • St. Johnsbury
  • Essex Junction

Popular Vermont communities to the south like Rutland, Springfield, Bennington and Brattleboro are just slightly outside the path of totality. But even 99% totality is NOT ENOUGH to get the full experience of seeing a total eclipse.

solar-eclipse-us.jpg

Hoping to hit the slopes for the eclipse? Ski Vermont says "lodging at Vermont's ski areas is booked, with few exceptions." Anyone heading north is advised to arrive early.

Places to stay in Stow have a 99% occupancy rate, and area bed and breakfasts began selling out a year ago . Some of the cheapest rooms still available start at $500, an inn owner tells WBZ-TV.

Vermont had a view of a partial eclipse in 2017 , seeing about 60% of the sun obscured by the moon.

Vermont total solar eclipse timeline

burlington-eclipse.jpg

In western parts of Vermont like Middlebury and Burlington, the eclipse gets underway starting at 2:14 p.m. On the eastern side in places like St. Johnsbury, it will start at 2:16 p.m.

Burlington will be in darkness (totality) for 3 minutes and 19 seconds, starting at 3:26 p.m. If you're flying in for the show, the FAA warns that the Burlington International Airport could see delays.

The entire event from start to finish lasts just over 2 hours, concluding at about 4:37 p.m.

Vermont cloud cover forecast for April 8

Historically, the data shows that New England is very likely to have a cloudy day in early April. However, the latest forecast gives us reason to be optimistic that there will not be any major storminess or cloud cover in the region.

There will be a warm front stretching across the Upper Midwest and through the Great Lakes on Monday, bringing some high clouds into the region.

clouds.jpg

Though the clouds could add a bit of a white haze, it's not likely that it will completely block the show.

We started setting up by Flagstaff Lake in Eustis, Maine, around 12:30 p.m. After using a phone app to check where the sun would be, we began to put the gear for. Our kit includes a close-up stills camera, a wide stills camera, a wide video camera and a close-up video camera.

The close-up video camera is the setup that required the most work to get going. It's a Canon C100 with a Tamron 150-600mm lens with a 2x adaptor. Shooting 1000mm on a mechanical tripod head that will rotate to follow the sun, with the hope of sending back live pictures and creating a time lapse at the end of the day!

Getting to the path of totality

By Michael Rosenfield | NBC10 Boston

Southbound traffic in northern New England was backed up after Monday's eclipse, just as northbound traffic had been before it.

"We wanted to be a part of it, because we probably won't be a part of the next total one that's around here," said Dawn Newton of Colchester, Connecticut.

Monday morning, it was bumper-to-bumper at times, forcing some to change their plans.

"We were using Waze to help navigate it," said Frank Hekel of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. "We took a few detours, but at the end of the day, we just got stuck in it."

Hekel and Nicole Curran, who wanted to get to the path of totality, decided to pull over in New Hampshire.

"We got a 99% view and a head start on the traffic back," said Curran. "We're pretty happy about the experience, it was pretty amazing."

Dr. Andrew Szentgyorgyi from the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics traveled to Texas. He says it's always a crapshoot when it comes to chasing an eclipse.

"We had to drive 250 miles to find a hole in the clouds. Unfortunately, Texas is cloudy and New England is clear," said Szentgyorgyi. "People in New England who drove up to Burlington were winners."

Breathtaking view from Burlington, Vermont

By Matt Fortin | NBC10 Boston

Crowds with a front-row view to the solar eclipse in Burlington, Vermont, were left in awe.

The view made for a worthy trip for people from all over.

"We got here before dawn, 5 something in the morning, and here we are," said Terry Day of Virginia.

"I needed to be in the path of totality, so I had to be here," said Michelle Jones of Philadelphia.

"These things are like once, maybe twice, in a lifetime," said Massachusetts resident Jennifer Garland. "I don't want to miss it, these things are almost mystical."

Burlington landing in the path of totality and the great weather were strokes of luck, but the city has been carefully planning the events surrounding the eclipse for a year.

It could be a tough commute heading out of Burlington, and the city is hoping that people stay a while to ease traffic. For the businesses here, they hope the taste tourists had of Burlington will be enough to bring them back.

Eclipse chasers from all around make their way to Maine

I left New Hampshire at 5 a.m. to make my way up to Flagstaff Lake in Eustis, Maine. Thankfully, this area has not had the heavy traffic we have seen in other parts of New England. The only time I had to slow down was for traffic going to Sugarloaf ski resort.

I made it to the lake around 8:30 a.m., and found people had already started to line the roads along the water. I met one eclipse chaser from Oregon who had been planning to travel to Texas before the weather forecast came out.

A filmmaker I met from Virginia was very excited to be here, originally planning to be in Plattsburgh, New York, before changing his mind at the last minute. Walking up and down the road, it was a very relaxed atmosphere, with families in camping chairs setting up hours ahead of the eclipse, which will hit our location here in Maine around 3:20 p.m.

Traffic delays getting worse in NH

By Mary Markos and Marc Fortier | NBC10 Boston

Major traffic delays are being reported on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire as solar eclipse tourists seek to make their way to northern New Hampshire and Vermont in time for Monday afternoon's big event.

NBC10 Boston's traffic map shows heavy delays from the Hooksett area all the way to Bow and Concord , where things start to ease up a bit. Traffic begins to back up again on I-93 as you approach the White Mountains region and Franconia Notch State Park.

New Hampshire State Police shared aerial video of the backups on social media.

The traffic backup raises the possibility that many motorists won't have reached their desired destinations when the eclipse occurs.

"We know exactly where we're going to stop on the highway — it's in the path of totality," one person said. "But I don't know with this traffic if we can make it or not. We'll try."

Maine State Police already appear to be preparing for that possibility, warning motorists on social media not to stop or get out of their vehicles to watch the eclipse.

We know people are excited for the eclipse but PLEASE do not stop or get out of your vehicle on the Interstate shoulders, crossovers, overpasses or on-ramps. Please exit the roadway and find a safe place to view the eclipse. — Maine State Police (@MEStatePolice) April 8, 2024

Burlington is bustling!

Vermont’s largest city has rolled out the red carpet for visitors from all over who are anxious to see a rare total solar eclipse.

Burlington's lakefront has been gradually filling up throughout the day, with solar tourists setting up telescopes, tents chairs and more. Many people are lining up at merchandise tents to get a souvenir to mark the occasion.

Jennifer Garland, of Massachusetts, said she missed the last total eclipse in 2017, so she was sure to have a spot early in the day in Burlington right on Lake Champlain.

“I had cancer at the time,” Garland said, recalling 2017. “I couldn’t travel… It killed me. These things are like once, maybe twice in a lifetime, and I don’t want to miss it.”

Significant backups are being reported on Interstate 93 north in New Hampshire, just south of the I-93/I-89 split heading to Vermont or northern New Hampshire.

Aerial images from NBC10 Boston's SkyRanger helicopter showed northbound cars blanketing the highway, while southbound traffic continues to flow freely.

New Hampshire officials had warned in the days leading up to the eclipse that motorists should leave early to make sure they aren't stuck in traffic when the eclipse occurs.

Rooftop views of the eclipse

Boston isn't in the "path of totality" for Monday's eclipse, but it's still going to be a spectacular event. And there are some spectacular options to watch the eclipse as well.

The Revere Hotel hosted a solar eclipse party on its rooftop from 12-5 p.m. Guests will get special glasses, there will be eclipse decorations and there will be eclipse-themed food and drink, like the Eclipse Elixir and Moon Pies. Over 100 people are expected to attend.

View Boston — the former "Top of the Hub" — also hosted a viewing party for the eclipse, with glasses and discounted tickets. Aerial video from NBC10 Boston's SkyRanger helicopter showed a good crowd of people gathered on the roof deck.

Drivers aren't bothered by eclipse traffic

People have never been so happy to sit in traffic.

The path of the total solar eclipse cuts across more than a dozen states, and northern New England has the best weather for a clear view. Officials across the region have been urging people to get there early and stay late, pack snacks, fill up their gas tanks and be patient.

We’re just a few miles south of the Interstate 93/Interstate 89 split – so drivers here are heading to both northern New Hampshire and Vermont. And it’s already backed up as of 10:30 a.m. AAA Northeast says they expect traffic to be like a holiday weekend!

State officials are estimating up to 20,000 people will head to the northernmost part of New Hampshire, up to 40,000 people will visit Maine and around 160,000 are going to Vermont. But that’s not stopping people driving hours for a once in a lifetime experience.

“We want to see the entire eclipse, get the full experience, so we don’t care about the travel," Danielle Printz said. "We got the day of from work today, so yeah, it’s worth it."

"I definitely think there’s going to be some traffic, but my son really enjoys this type of stuff and it's just going to be an experience that we don’t get to see too often," said Dave Dixon.

When and where to see Monday's eclipse

Here's a quick look at the " path of totality " for Monday's eclipse, which will include parts of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

travel conditions in vermont

And if you're planning on heading north on Monday, here's a look at the best spots in northern New England to see the eclipse .

A map showing the expected total solar eclipse's path through New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine on Monday, April 8, 2024.

We also heard last week from the governors of Maine , New Hampshire and Vermont on their advise for viewing the big event.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott compared the eclipse excitement to "peak foliage weekend on steroids," while New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu advised people to expect traffic similar to what you'd see for a New England Patriots game.

Eclipse traffic expected to be heavy

While many tourists headed north over the weekend, even more are expected to make the drive from parts of southern New England to the north during the day on Monday .

NBC10 Boston's Alysha Palumbo, in Hooksett, New Hampshire, said the traffic heading north wasn't too bad on Monday morning but was still a bit heavier than usual.

Authorities have urged people to fill their gas tanks, and bring plenty of snacks and water in case of major traffic delays. They have also said that people should leave early, stay on major roadways and not stop on the highway to view the eclipse.

Your last-minute eclipse forecast

By Tevin Wooten and Sydney Welch | NBC10 Boston

NBC10 Boston meteorologist Sydney Welch says that the weather will be in the low 60s with mostly clear skies for Monday's eclipse. That means that while there may be some hazy skies, it shouldn't get in the way of eclipse viewing.

Meteorologist Tevin Wooten added that the forecast is still in our favor despite the inbound clouds.

The peak eclipse is about 3:29 p.m. in Boston. The partial eclipse starts at 2:16 p.m. and ends at 4:39 p.m. And don't forget to wear your eclipse glasses!

7 a.m.: Tourists arrive early

Many eclipse tourists traveled to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont over the weekend, making sure they arrived early and didn't have to fight last minute traffic.

In Vermont, downtown Burlington had a Mardi Gras vibe on Sunday, as people packed the pedestrian mall.

RV traffic sits at a standstill along a two-lane road near Madras, Ore., a few days before the 2017 total solar eclipse. Experts say traffic could be heavy, but eclipse watchers shouldn't necessarily be deterred.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. here's why.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

Live updates: Everything you need to know about Monday's solar eclipse

The big day has finally arrived − the 2024 solar eclipse will draw millions to look skyward . Thousands have traveled to see it, some even crossing oceans just to catch a glimpse.

So, what final details should you remember as you enjoy the celestial event? Take a look.

Check back throughout the day for live updates from Austin and statewide:

3:40 p.m. The eclipse has left the building

The eclipse ended in the Austin area around 3 p.m., but it will live in our hearts, fond memories and photos that you can purchase forever. If you did happen to glance at the sun and you're worried about eclipse blindness, you can check out the symptoms here. If you're wondering what to with your eclipse glasses, we have suggestions here .

Amazingly, traffic in the Texas capital remains manageable. According to Google, a trip from Zilker Park to the departures gate at Austin Bergstrom is currently only 26 minutes. If you're on your way out of Austin, we hope you've enjoyed your stay. If you're a local, thanks for joining us on this celestial journey and we hope to connect again soon!

2:08 p.m.: Early post-eclipse traffic snarls are not as bad as anticipated

For weeks, we've been preparing for a crush of visitors that would overwhelm Austin roads and turn I-35 into a parking lot. 30 minutes after totality, the roads are looking surprisingly clear. According to Google maps, a trip from the Texas State Capitol to the airport was only 18 minutes. That same trip from Zilker Park is 22 minutes. Travel from the Long Center's eclipse event to Pflugerville was 29 minutes and the same trip up to Cedar Park was 27 minutes.

1:54 p.m. Students and adults at Reilly Elementary danced under the moon-darkened sky

As the day became dark at Reilly Elementary, children and adults alike ran around in glee, cheering the once-in-a-lifetime event.

As the sun again began poking out from behind the moon’s showdown, Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” rang out from a speaker as students broke into a dance party.

1:47 p.m. Zilker Park erupted in cheers during a brief glance of the ring of fire

Persistent cloud cover didn't deter a crowd of eclipse watchers at Zilker Park who camped on the great lawn and cheered each time the sun peeked out from behind the clouds (and the moon). As the city moved into totality there was a momentary appearance of the full ring as the moon passed over the sun. It was very brief but the full park saw it and erupted into cheers They cheered several times while the ring was visible, when it appeared absolutely darkest and then as orange hues started to illuminate the otherwise very gray sky at the end.

1:35 p.m. Austin, we have hit.....TOTALITY!

Oh snap! It's dark. It's suddenly chilly. Stop reading this right now and look up at the sky! Take a deep breath. Listen for crickets. Think celestial thoughts. Experience the magic. Totality in most of the city will last for less than two minutes.

12:25 p.m.: The eclipse is a 'twice in a lifetime' experience for this family

We caught up with the Schuster family, who traveled from Annapolis, Maryland for the eclipse, at the Texas Capitol.

This is the family's second time traveling for a total solar eclipse, after visiting Columbia, South Carolina in 2017. Addison Schuster turned 21 on the trip to Texas, and the family came to Austin because he had wanted to visit the city for years. They've done some shopping, sampled some Texas BBQ, and made a stop at Dirty Sixth one night.

They are hopeful the eclipse is visible in the next hour, but feel confident there will be noticeable effects no matter what.

12:17 p.m. It's starting! There's sun (sort of)! Go look at the sky!

It's go time, Austin! The solar eclipse will be visible from the Austin area from 12:17 p.m. to 2:58 p.m., with totality from 1:35 p.m. to 1:38 p.m. Not in Austin? Here's more eclipse time information.

11:52 a.m.: Eclipse watchers gather at the Long Center for the city's best skyline view

Twelve thousand people registered to watch the spectacular solar eclipse from the Long Center, but only the first 5,000 will make it onto the Hartman Lawn. Thousands more will spill out along Ladybird Lake and bridges connecting the downtown area. The sun keeps peeking in and out of the light cloud cover as everyone hopes for a clear view of the moon overtaking the sun.

“We keep saying it’s like dramatic effect,” says Cory Baker, the CEO of the Long Center. “I’m hoping it’s gonna burn off and we’re going to have clear skies.”

Tote bags, glasses, pens and journals are given to everyone who enters, not a blade of grass is expected to be seen with wall-to-wall onlookers hoping to catch the natural event.

“(Eclipses) happen every 18 months so it’s not that they’re rare on the planet,” says Ivvet Modinou, the Senior Vice President for Science Society and Culture for the Simons Foundation, “but for it to intersect with the place you call home is very rare.”

Libby Amos, 6, and Emma, 4, posed with their friend Lydia Witherspoon in the frame picture spot overlooking the city.

“It’s very, very, super duper cool,” says Libby who came with her Louisiana family.

“I used to teach eighth grade earth and space science and it was so fun to teach to my students and it’s just so cool to share with my kids now,” says Libby and Emma’s mom Madeline Brown.

The doors opened at 11 a.m. with the Mother Nature spectacular expected at 1:35 p.m.

11:17 a.m.: An estimated 40% of camp sites at Pace Bend Park in Spicewood are unoccupied

Out at Pace Bend Park in Spicewood, there are clouds and campers and also several unoccupied camping sites. Every site that's unoccupied has a Reserved tag on it. It was the same story on Sunday. Where are the campers? Where are the eclipsers?

The primitive corner of Pace Bend's campground is between half- and three-fourths filled. Perhaps it is the threat of clouds, and possibly even rain, during today's eclipse that's keeping the campers away: Pace Bend's sites are all reserved, a camp employee said, but she estimated that 40% of the reserved sites are currently unoccupied.

"Let's manifest sunlight," said one camper earlier this morning.

11:09 a.m.: Texas Eclipse Festival in Burnet canceled due to potential severe weather

The Texas Eclipse Festival in Burnet is ending a day early on Monday due to possible severe weather, including risks of tornadic activity, thunderstorms and large hail, the festival said in online posts.

Festival organizers urged attendees to leave early for safety and to beat traffic. Organizers agreed to end the festival in coordination with Burnet County officials, local safety agencies and the National Weather Service, according to the festival’s website.

All programming and performances for Monday and Tuesday are canceled. No additional guests will be allowed to enter the venue, and inbound shuttles to the venue are canceled. More information .

10:47 a.m.: Crowds are sparser than expected at the bat bridge

Matt Langbehn, from Round Rock, is the first to set up camp near the South Congress bat bridge in Austin. Langbehn said he arrived at 4 a.m. because of expected crowds, but as of 10:40 he was still the lone individual on the hill.

"I wake up early anyway," Langbehn said, undeterred.

"It's been a beautiful day," he added.

10:19 a.m.: Need a professional photo of the eclipse? We've got you

These days, we all walk around with powerful cameras in our pockets. But if you're trying to record the eclipse with your smart phone, you should use a solar filter (except when the eclipse has reached full totality). And honestly, capturing the majesty of an event like the eclipse is a job for the pros.

After the eclipse, we'll have posters and framed prints from Statesman photojournalists available at usatodaystore.com.

Solar eclipse road closures in Texas

Roads are expected to have 30% more drivers than usual today and tomorrow, according to CBS News . Traffic will also be more congested in the path of totality and surrounding areas.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has banned overweight and/or oversized loads from a large swath of highways today.

Despite some anxiety regarding the implications of the road ban, the department assures this will not affect major transportation such as grocery distribution and mail delivery.

"Route restrictions are a regular part of the oversize/overweight permitting process for various reasons," a DMV spokesperson told MySA . "But a total eclipse is, of course, not a common reason."

The Texas Department of Transportation has also been proactive in making roads as safe as possible.

"Solar eclipse Monday, delays possible," TxDOT's electronic billboards read. "Arrive early, stay put, leave late."

I watched the total solar eclipse in a city that doubled in size during the event. I don't regret it.

  • I traveled to Burlington, Vermont to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday.
  • Roughly 50,000 people traveled to this small city for the event, doubling its size in a matter of days.
  • What's usually a small, quiet city exploded in celebration.

Insider Today

A swarm of over a million Americans traveled to the path of totality to witness the solar eclipse on Monday, and I was one of them. I returned to my hometown of Burlington, Vermont to watch the event unfold.

Along with thousands of other eclipse watchers, I headed to Burlington's Waterfront Park to watch the eclipse. While it was crowded, it wasn't nearly as chaotic as I expected.

I chose Burlington as my eclipse-viewing city because of its convenience, the length of totality, and the city's natural beauty

Burlington is the state's largest city, but with a population of only 44,000, it feels more like a big small town. Its tree-lined streets are relatively quiet, there's hardly ever traffic, and everybody seems to know everybody.

My parents live just 20 minutes away, so I didn't have to scramble to book a pricey hotel room. I watched the eclipse from Burlington's scenic Waterfront Park and enjoyed three minutes and 15 seconds of totality.

Burlington braced for an influx of 50,000 eclipse tourists

In the days leading up to the eclipse, an estimated 50,000 eclipse tourists poured into Vermont to witness this event.

On Friday, the state's most utilized rest area saw a 200% rise in traveler numbers compared to this day last year, followed by another 225% spike on Saturday and a 168% spike on Sunday, according to VT Digger .

6,000 people gathered on the shore of Lake Champlain

The boardwalk at Waterfront Park was the perfect place to watch the eclipse. It faces west, looking out over Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains, offering a picturesque backdrop for the eclipse.

Even as the crowd formed, there was a sense of calm that kept things from feeling too packed. Folks found their viewing spots and stayed put, chatting with others nearby, offering photography advice , and enjoying the sunny day.

A hush fell over the crowd during totality

When totality hit and the sun's corona peeked out from behind the moon's shadow, cheers erupted from the crowd. But then it grew quieter as people took in this awe-inspiring sight. Excited, hushed voices could still be heard amidst the clicking of camera shutters, but the three minutes and 15 seconds were remarkably serene.

Walking traffic wasn't that bad

As soon as totality ended, there was a mass exodus from Waterfront Park. People packed up their chairs and cameras and headed back uptown.

I braced for slow-moving, congested foot traffic as I, too, made my way back toward Church Street — Burlington's main marketplace. But it wasn't too crowded at all. Luckily, the city had closed certain roads to driving traffic ahead of time to allow people to walk safely and quickly back into town from the waterfront.

The sense of community was strong

Burlington is an incredibly tight-knit community, and I'm reminded of that fact every time I return to this city for an event. A swarm of people may feel claustrophobic in any other city, but in Burlington, it feels interconnected.

I enjoyed chatting with other eclipse-watchers in the crowd about where they traveled from, who they came with, and why they were excited about the eclipse. Complete strangers mingled, snapped photos of each other, and were mindful of others' space and needs.

This kind and cooperative atmosphere made traveling to a city that doubled in size a stress-free, fun experience.
