Washington, D.C., and  New York City are two of the most popular travel destinations in the United States. These cities are often paired on itineraries of the eastern U.S. because they are, at most, only about five hours apart.

Because the route between ​ Washington and New York City (NYC) is so well-traveled, there are several transportation options for getting from one place to the other. The train is the fastest method, and even quicker than taking a flight because it takes you directly from the center of Washington to Times Square in Manhattan. But it can be expensive, and taking a bus is only an hour or two longer but costs a fraction of the price. If you have a car, the route can be dense with traffic but it lets you explore the many cities along the way.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Washington, DC to New York City?

The Greyhound Bus is the cheapest way to travel from Washington, D.C., to New York City, with tickets starting at $15. Even if you're making a last-minute purchase, bus tickets shouldn't rise to more than $30, making it an especially affordable option if you haven't planned in advance. The ride takes between four and a half and five hours, so it's also the slowest method of transport.

Greyhound buses depart Washington from Union Station, located near the Capitol Building at the east end of the National Mall. Buses arrive at the Port Authority in New York, which is located next to Times Square and has several subway connections to the rest of the city.

Greyhound used to be the only game in town, but now there are other companies competing for travelers' dollars—including Bolt Bus and MegaBus—which also shuttle passengers between these two major cities.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Washington, DC to New York City?

Although the plane is the quickest journey, once you factor in all of the additional time it takes to get to and from the airport, check in for your flight, go through security, and wait at your gate, it actually takes much longer than the train. Amtrak service brings passengers from Union Station in Washington directly to Penn Station in Manhattan, saving you nearly two hours of travel time just from commuting to airports. The time of the journey from city center to city center depends on which train you choose, with the fastest ones arriving in two and a half hours and others taking up to four hours.

Tickets start at $54 for a coach seat, but those quickly sell out and you may be stuck paying for business class, which costs anywhere from $130 to over $300. If you don't see a coach ticket available at the time you want to leave, try looking at other trains throughout the day. Amtrak offers up to 40 daily trips on this popular route, so chances are you can find a more affordable ticket at another time.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

Driving from New York City to Washington, D.C., takes approximately four to six hours, depending on traffic and how many stops you make. This option is ideal for families and those who wish to stop for a meal or a bit of sightseeing.

The driving time is affected by the time you leave. Rush hour traffic in either city tends to be heaviest from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The preferred route of most drivers is I-95 from Washington, D.C., through Maryland and Delaware, and then the New Jersey Turnpike through New Jersey, taking one of the exits between exits 10 through 14, and then entering New York City via a bridge or tunnel.

There are a number of tolls along the way between Washington and New York, including the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, the Delaware Memorial Bridge straddling Delaware and New Jersey, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the bridges to New York City, such as the Goethals and the Verrazano. Expect to pay approximately $37 for tolls one way. You can pay for tolls with cash, although people who do this drive often have an E-Z Pass , which allows for quicker travel through toll plazas. If you have an E-Z Pass from another area you can use that and they will bill you.

How Long Is the Flight?

Even though Washington, D.C., and New York City are relatively close, many travelers go between the two cities that several airlines offer direct flights, such as United, Delta, and American. The total time in the air is only about 1 hour, 15 minutes, but all of the other hassles that come with airport travel make taking a flight just as long as taking a train, if not longer. Direct flights are also relatively expensive, starting at about $100, or twice as much as a coach seat on Amtrak.

Both Washington and New York have three major airports each, and choosing one that is convenient for your starting and ending destination is important to cut down travel time. Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the closest to the city center in Washington and the easiest to get to. Many flights also leave from Dulles Airport (IAD) or Baltimore Airport (BWI), which are farther out and will add a significant amount of travel time. Flights arrive in New York at LaGuardia (LGA) in Queens, John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in Brooklyn, or Newark Airport (EWR) in New Jersey, so choose the airport that is closest to your final destination.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to New York City?

The best time to visit New York depends on what you're looking for, since the city that never sleeps always has something going on. Winters can be brutally cold while summers may be unbearably humid, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit for good weather. In spring, you can visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden to see the blooming cherry blossoms, while in the fall Central Park turns fiery hues of orange and red as the leaves change colors. Visiting while the city is blanketed under snow has its own charm as well if you visit in the winter. And while summers may be hot, it's a perfect time to hit up one of the nearby beaches.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

Public transportation is available from all three New York City airports, but the travel times vary drastically depending on which airport you use and to which part of the city you're heading to. In general, if your final destination is Manhattan, it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to reach the city by subway from JFK . If you arrive at LaGuardia, the bus takes you from the airport to Manhattan in about an hour as well. The AirTrain from Newark Airport is one of the quickest journeys, shuttling passengers to Penn Station in just 30 minutes.

Even if you've never been to New York City, everyone knows it from movies, literature, music, and pop culture. You could spend a year living in New York and you still wouldn't be able to see all that it has to offer. If it's your first time visiting, then there are a few must-see sites that everyone has to experience, and most of New York's iconic sites are located in Manhattan. Around Midtown, you have Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Grand Central Terminus. Just a few blocks uptown is the enormous Central Park, and a few blocks downtown the legendary Empire State Building dominates.  Many of Manhattan's most charming neighborhoods are below 14th Street, such as Greenwich Village, Soho, and Washington Square Park. With this in mind, a better option would be to stretch the drive out over a period of at least 2-3 days, allowing you longer at each attraction plus the opportunity for a couple of overnight stops.

Best road trip route from New York To Washington DC

From New York, the quickest and most direct route to Washington DC is via Interstate 95. This straightforward option takes you through five states and includes a great amount of attractions to see along the way.

That said, if you have more time to spare, you could take a longer route to Washington DC via Interstate 78. Despite adding more than 50 miles to your journey, it doesn't really add much in terms of scenery or places of interest. On this occasion, the quickest and most direct is best.

Road trip route from New York to Washington DC

Leave New York on Interstate 78 and head west past Newark. You could make a quick first stop and take the ferry over to Staten Island, alternatively change to I-95 and head south before merging with US-1 to the town of Princeton.

After leaving New Jersey, you'll take I-295 south through Bensalem where you'll merge on I-95 and arrive in the incredible city of Philadelphia - a great option for a first overnight stop.

After exploring this great city, continue on I-95 south alongside the Delaware River and through Wilmington, the historic Delaware city.

Best time to go on a road trip from New York to Washington DC

The road trip from New York to Washington DC is one that can be completed at any time in the year. That said, summer in this part of the US can get sweltering with highs of between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

The humidity, coupled with large crowds and busy hotels, means that travelling outside of summer might be preferable.

Therefore the best times to visit Washington DC are from September to November and March to May. Fall brings pleasant weather and lighter crowds, while avoiding winter which can see lows of 30 degrees.

Spring is also a great time to appreciate the fantastic attractions this trip has to offer, especially if you're hoping to visit some of the national parks in the area.

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, train travel is a reliable and easy way to go from Washington D.C. to New York City, especially during the winter months, when other means experience extensive delays. Keep in mind that there are several tolls along the way; an E-ZPass makes passage through toll plazas quicker. E-ZPass is a cashless toll device used by 19 northeast U.S. states. If you are renting a car and already have an E-ZPass, bring it with you to use, otherwise rental companies charge a daily fee to use their own transponders, or bill you later with an administrative fee.

If you want to rent a car to drive from Washington to New York City, companies like National , Hertz , and Avis are all good options. At Reagan Airport (DCA), the rental car companies are on-site, located on the ground floor of Terminal Garage A. At Dulles Airport (IAD), you will need to take a free shuttle bus from the terminal to the rental car center a few minutes away.

If you're not flying in, consider picking up your rental car at a non-airport location as it can be cheaper. Large rental car companies like Enterprise , Alamo , and Budget have numerous locations in and around Washington.

3. From Washington, D.C. to New York by Bus

Highlights: Cheap and stress-free, some green or carbon-neutral travel options are available

Avoid the hassle of driving and save money otherwise spent on gas and tolls by opting for a bus ride, which takes approximately five to six hours . Catch a Greyhound bus from Washington's Union Station to Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

Buses from other companies like Megabus and Peter Pan also leave from Union Station and offer curbside drop offs in Midtown, while the Chinatown Bus has a few departure points in D.C. and leaves you in Chinatown. Most bus companies offer free Wi-Fi onboard, power outlets, reserved seating, and onboard entertainment.

FlixBus has about 15 buses running between Washington and Manhattan throughout the day. Their departure point is New York Ave. and 6th Street NW, and they drop off in Midtown right next to Penn Station. They also have a few buses each day that drop off in Chinatown.

The FlixBus routes are direct and take between four and five hours. FlixBus is also a green way to travel between DC and NYC, with buses that emit less CO2 per mile than passenger cars. You can even travel carbon-neutral by buying compensation credits used to offset the emissions of your personal journey.

Bus lines have buses leaving regularly daily, with Greyhound leading the charge with double the number of buses. If you are looking to travel in more comfort, opt for the Washington Deluxe bus, which has fewer passengers, larger seats, extra legroom, and provides complimentary Wi-Fi, a bottle of water, and movies on your mobile device. The Washington Deluxe bus picks up at Dupont Circle, DC Union Station and Pentagon City. In NYC, it stops near Penn Station and Times Square (36th between 7th and 8th), in Chinatown (Allen Street between Grand and Broome), and in Brooklyn. They even offer a LUX service on a smaller bus a few times a day, with individual captain's chairs and a more Business Class-like experience.

4. From Washington, D.C. to New York by Plane

A convenient way to travel between Washington D.C. and New York is by plane. Major airlines like Delta , JetBlue , and American Airlines have non-stop shuttle service daily. Although the actual flying time is around an hour , time getting to and from the airport and clearing security could easily add two to three hours to your commute.

The airport closest to Downtown D.C. is Reagan National (DCA), which is accessible by a short cab or Uber ride or Metro . However, a shuttle to Dulles International (IAD) or Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) can also get you to NYC airports with more flight options. Flights depart as early as 6am. Passengers can fly to any of the NYC area airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), or Newark International Airport (EWR), all of which have connections to public transit.

Take the AirTrain to connect to Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) or the MTA subway from JFK to reach various points in the city; the M60 bus from any terminals at LaGuardia brings you to 125th street in Manhattan, where you can connect to local trains with the free transfer; the AirTrain New Jersey Transit trains from the Newark airport will get you into Penn Station in the heart of New York City. NYC Airporter or Go Airlink NYC (the official airport shuttle partner) also offer shuttle buses and vans you can use to transfer from any of the area airports to major transportation hubs in the city.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are also options to get from the airports into Manhattan, as are regular taxi cabs. Visitors should be aware that cabs have rates set by the government for the trip from the airport to the city, most are around $60. This is per car not per person but does not include a gratuity or bridge/tunnel tolls, which are the responsibility of the rider.

Amtrak NYC to DC: Why Taking the Train is the Best Way to Go

Amtrak Advantages: Travel Time

Anyone who has ever tried to drive out of New York City on a summer weekend, holiday or random gridlock alert day knows that the soul-crushing traffic can put a damper on the trip.

A journey from New York City to Washington DC by car can take anywhere from four to seven hours.

There are two Amtrak options:

• Amtrak Acela  takes 2 hours and 46 (to 54) minutes. It stops at Newark Penn Station; Metropark, NJ; Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Penn Station, and the train can speed along at 150 miles an hour in some spots.
• Northeast Regional  takes three hours and 20-40 minutes. It makes all of the stops the Acela makes, plus stops at the Newark and Baltimore airports, and it travels at slower speeds.

You can save almost an hour on the high-speed train, and up to four hours of hair-tearing hysteria by taking the train rather than your car.

Plus, the Acela has a First Class option, with free meals and drinks served to you at your seat. Philadelphia celebrity chef Stephen Starr curated the menu. The food in the Acela cafe car also has more interesting options than the cafe car on the Northeast Regional.

Price: Amtrak vs Car

On a recent summer weekend, we paid about $40 for our roundtrip Amtrak tickets, bought well in advance. Had we waited to buy our tickets at the last minute, or planned to travel during the holidays, it would have been far more expensive.

When we realized we could take a morning train, getting us into Washington DC much earlier in the day than our ticketed departure, we learned that we would have to pay the difference in price. The morning train would have cost us more than five times the price we originally paid.

Driving to DC, the tolls can be $40, depending on route. And the gas? Let’s say you have a car that gets 25 miles per gallon. Gas will cost about $30 for the trip.

This is, of course, just one way, so you’ll spend another $70 to get back to NYC from Washington DC. But if 2 of you are in the car, the price per person drops. And three or four along for the ride? Even less.

But you have to weigh your sanity versus potential road rage. You do you.

Comfort in Coach

This is not your average airplace seat! Even in coach class on the slower Northeast Regional trains, there is plenty of legroom. You can put your bags up above, or in luggage areas at the end of cars.

Business class seats have the advantage of being assigned, so you don’t have to worry about dragging your suitcases through the train, looking for an available seat.

There is something weird with Amtrak train seats: If you have an aisle seat and don’t know the person sitting next to you, you have to run a cord across their seat to reach the power outlets.

And the free wifi isn’t really strong enough to do work on the train.

Quiet Car vs Other Seats on Amtrak Train

Now that my children are out of the house, I am a fan of the quiet car on Amtrak. Phone calls aren’t allowed and you have to use headphones if you use electronic devices, with the volume turned low.

But don’t take the quiet car with young children. Although you are allowed to talk in the quiet car, no one appreciates a loud child here. We once took this car because there were no other seats on the train. We were glared at until Philadelphia, when we escaped to the boisterous regular car.

Amtrak Pet and Baggage Policies

If you are bringing a dog, you might have to drive. Amtrak charges $26 for a dog, and it has to weigh under 20 pounds. My Labrador Retriever has plumped up to 70 pounds, so she is banned from the train, even though she works as a comfort dog. [Therapy dogs of any size are allowed].

Driving can also be the perfect option if you are schlepping a lot of stuff. Amtrak allows you to bring two pieces of luggage, and charges for oversized items like bicycles. On the Northeast Corridor, it costs $20 to bring a bicycle.

Though when I brought my daughter a folding bike, I didn’t have to pay extra.

Moynihan Train Hall, New York City

One of the best things about taking Amtrak anywhere from NYC is the new Moynihan Train Hall.

This glorious transformation of the historic Farley Post Office has transformed the former Amtrak area in Penn Station, which is across the street, to one of beauty and wonder.  You also have access to great food.

If you take the subway to Moynihan Train Hall, the walk from the filth of the MTA to the shiny new Amtrak station is like the change from black and white to color in the Wizard of Oz . Light streams in from above, brass gleams and the air is – or at least seems – fresher.

Moynihan Food Hall

The centerpiece of Moynihan Food Hall, the Bar at Moynihan, has lots of local craft beer on tap and classic cocktails. Sit at the wood bar while you wait for an evening train.

The food hall has easy to eat or carry out food, like sushi, chopped salad, pizza and burgers. Alidoro makes Italian sandwiches that travel well and Naya has Mediterranean inspired bowls, wraps and salads. A ramen shop is coming, but ramen is best slurped up before the train.

If you are visiting someone – say, your daughter – in Washington DC, and you’ve forgotten to bring her bagels, you can pick some up at H & H, along with a few cupcakes at Magnolia or chocolates at Maison du Chocolat.

Exclusive Access: Metropolitan Lounge

If you have treated yourself to an Acela train ticket, or you have elite Amtrak status, you get access to Metropolitan Lounge. Business class passengers can also buy a day pass to the lounge.

This expansive sanctuary has lots of clean, comfortable places to sit, and free (non-alcoholic) drinks and food. There is also a bar, but you have to pay for drinks.

Even if you don’t have access to the Metropolitan Lounge, The Amtrak waiting area at Moynihan, for ticketed passengers only, has very clean bathrooms and power outlets at every seat.

Getting to Your Amtrak Train

One issue the fabulous Moynihan Train Hall hasn’t addressed is the chaos that ensues when a train track is announced. There is only one escalator to the track and it’s a bloodsport to get on the line before it resembles a Black Friday queue.

But there are 2 semi-secret ways to avoid the line.

• When the train is announced, go to the elevator and take it to the track. Very few people do this.
• Passengers in the Metropolitan Lounge get an early announcement of the track number and can take the elevator before the line even forms.

Union Station Washington DC

When you walk into Union Station in Washington DC, you are in a beautiful historic train station. Unfortunately, the Amtrak area, while not as grim as Penn Station in Manhattan was, is still pretty dismal.

There is an Acela Lounge at Union Station. For ‘regular’ passengers, there is a dim seating area and the usual scrum when the track is announced. One advantage here over Moynihan Train Hall is that the trains are on the same level as the waiting area. No crowded escalators, stairs or elevators to navigate.

Picking a Train

Some trains originate in NYC, which means finding a seat on the train going to DC is pretty easy. It also means that the train is cleaner. If the Amtrak is coming from Boston, people might be getting off in NYC. But they are not taking their garbage with them and no one is cleaning the train.

On our recent Amtrak ride, someone did come around collecting trash, but the guy next to me left a mess in his seat and no one addressed that.

And don’t even get me started on the bathrooms. I can’t imagine what the bathrooms look like on the trains going all the way to Miami or Chicago.

It was a crowded flight. They did the best they could.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

Horrible. First delta flight was delayed. I ran to my connecting flight and arrived to the gate 13 mins before departure. I told the gate agent “I’m here”, she told me flight was closed while giving my already confirmed seat to an stand by passenger. I said again “madam, I’m here with my confirmed seat” and she said “no you’re not here@ and gave two stand by people a boarding pass and let them board. I asked “madam, why do you do that?”, and she repeated “you’re not here”. That was very rude. I’m disappointed of delta. It used to have a good customer service. Things have changed, but not for good.

Do not get fooled by the term “Delta One” flat bed! The seats were super narrow. The ottoman for the feet was so narrow that when you recline the seat in flat bed position, you can only fit one foot in the 8” width space. There was only 1 flight attendant for First Class. The breakfast took 2 hours to get served. Instead of offering French Toast, the served bread pudding. The champagne with orange juice or Mimosa tasted terrible. Almost all the movies offered were ridiculously old. For a long flight from San Francisco to NY, it was frustrating! I DO NOT RECOMMEND this flight!!!

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

After we landed, we were held on the plane for 30 minutes. There was no one at the gate once we landed and we forced to sit on a plan that had already over an hour delayed.

Flawless trip. Pilot came out and introduced himself, welcomed everyone, made a light joke to put everyone at ease. Arrived quite early.

JetBlue's check-in was great, but there was an in-flight flight attendant who was very rude and unkind. I didn't realize that the bathrooms were already locked 30 mins prior to landing and needed to use the restroom. Instead of politely asking me to return, she rudely told me, 'No, bathrooms are locked! Go back to your seat!' The flight was more than an hour delay, which made me almost miss my connecting flight. I understand the reasoning, but the action they took to get a hold of maintenance was time consuming. It took them so long to get a hold of maintenance and for maintenance to get started. Most importantly, my 3 checked baggages are missing! I'm writing this review 3 days after my arrival to the Philippines, and my 3 checked baggages, where my wedding dress is, are all missing!

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

The plane was delayed 2 hours. The wifi did not work. The seat in first class was not comfortable because the bottom felt like it lost all of its padding. And I did not like when the flight attendant made me wait at my seat to use the bathroom and didn't tell me why. If there were too many people using the 1st Class bathroom, she should have told me to go in the back, coach bathrooms. I guess I have to feel fortunate that they found 2 local pilots to still fly the plane tonight after the original pilots ended up at an airport 60 miles away due to high winds.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

Wheelchair assistance was not complete. The person left me at the departure gate without informing the groundstaff of my requirements. I had to walk to the departure counter to ask for help to reach the plane door. The crew informed me that in future they were not allowed to help passengers like me, senior citizen and Wheelchair passenger with placing their carry on bags in the overhead compartments!

Just a crappy airline. The same every time. You feel you are a cow on a farm. You are being being whipped and pulled.

Very bumpy flight & the crew was not happy to be there

My interaction with the flight attendent Eve was horrible. I was seated in 3F and was blown away watching her repeatedly skip me as she took other customer orders for lunch...she took the customer next to me but skipped me, then took everyone's order around me (in front of and behind me) . After she had taken every customer's orders to include those behind me, she came to me and said we are out of everything except one last item. I was mortified, in that, I am a 1k flyer, had pre-ordered AND as an African American could only assume why she repeatedly skipped me...mortified. no words

The Flight was good, pilot seemed very skillful. My wheel chair sister who could barely walk was allotted the second last seat in the aircraft, with great difficulty she managed to reach on her seat, as she required attendance we were given separate seat, even on request no one cared, so much so there were single passengers who were given twin seats. May not be taken as complaint but a reminder to the checkin staff to keep in mind in future the allottment of wheel chair passengers seats.

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

Cut off carry ons, had to check, got on and there was plenty of bin space. Disappointing.

The flight was so short that the lack of leg room didn't bother me for long. The plane was smaller so only two seats per row and there were chargers. However, they didn't serve any snacks.

Horrible trip. I won't fly AA again Boarding was a nightmare because they squeezed people into the waiting like sardines. My connection was 30 minutes and the run to the gate was horrible. Then the flight was canceled AFTER boarding. The Flight attendants did not know what to do and gave out the wrong instructions. They finally sent us to a different gate. Again, the waiting was like a sardine tin. The flight was okay and my baggage arrived fine.

My first time flying American Airlines, my first flight to CLT was wonderful and flight attendants was nice and had great customer service. My second flight from CLT to NY was very delayed due to whatever reason the crew was not greeting other than that I’m rate 8 .
