Long car trips can feel a bit daunting for most of us. They take a lot of time to plan and include many moving parts (and people!)
One of the most important parts of planning a long road trip is to find the right activities to help your little ones want to stay in their car seat during these long vehicle rides.
Along with packing activity books, a great way to keep everyone busy is with fun road trip games that will create so much fun that the time will go by so quickly!
Once the kids have found all of the license plates and shared fun facts they know and you have exhausted all of those road trip activities , you may be ready for a road trip mad lib or two.
We have included some fun and silly stories that will not only create a lot of opportunities for laughter, but also help your kids with great examples of the parts of speech.
This fun family activity will keep everyone busy with funny stories and continue to make them even more hilarious when replacing missing words.
Road Trip Mad Libs
Below you will find a series of mad lib stories that will get everyone laughing and coming up with ways to make the stories even more silly.
In order to make use of the stories several times, I would suggest printing out the stories and putting them in a sleeve so you can write on them with erasable marker.
This also makes things much easier for clean up!
An Unexpected Detour
The (last name) family set off on a road trip to the beach, armed with snacks, road maps, and a playlist full of their favorite songs. Little did they know, it was not going to be the (adjective) trip they expected.
Within the first hour, Dad insisted on taking a “shortcut” that led them straight into a (place). Mom had misread the GPS and directed them to a deserted town that looked a little creepy. There were (plural noun) on the side of the road.
Once they found their way back to the highway, the car’s GPS started giving directions in a (foreign language) accent, confusing everyone. What else could go wrong? Just when the family thought they were going to lose their minds, they started to smell the (adjective) air.
They must be close to the beach! They had never been so happy to get out of the car. The kids kissed the (noun) as they pulled into the parking lot of the hotel.
Feather Fiasco
As the (last name) family cruised down the highway, singing their favorite tunes, a sudden thud against
the windshield startled them. Before they knew what happened, a type of bird landed inside their car,
flapping wildly. The kids (verb) , Mom shrieked, and Dad pulled over. Mom and Dad scrambled to get
the bird out. But 4 year old bird-lover Sarah decided that she wanted to keep the bird. She grabbed the
bird and tried to keep it away from her parents. She fed it some (food) . In the middle of all the noise,
the family cat woke up and dove toward the bird. The bird flew out of Sarah’s (body part) . Mom tried
to shoo the bird toward an open (part of a car) . The bird landed in Dad’s (body part) and pooped.
A lot. Then, the bird finally found its way out the open window. The family continued on, even though
everyone was (adjective) now. The cat didn’t get a snack, Sarah didn’t have a new pet and Dad
had poop in his (body part).
Pets Gone Wild
The (last name) family decides to bring their (adjective) assortment of pets on their road trip-
a parrot, a hamster and a goldfish in a bowl. After only about (number) minutes, everything
started to go wrong. The hamster got out of his cage and went under the (part of car) .
None of the kids could catch him. Then, he started eating all the (food) they had packed.
Then, the parrot started mimicking the GPS over and over. His favorite thing to say was
” (something a GPS says) “. The parents tried to tell their kids to (verb) , but they
couldn’t hear a thing. To make everything worse, part of the road was very rough and
the water from the goldfish bowl started to spill all over the kid’s (body part) .
Everyone was miserable until finally they arrived at their vacation spot (number) hours later.
The Mystery Of The Magical Snack Cooler
The (last name) family was ready for their annual road trip. The only problem was that Mom
had been distracted and had only packed (healthy snack) in the snack cooler. The kids whined
and wished for more snacks. Magically, some (yummy snack) appeared. “Whoa!’, the kids said.
“Did you see that?” They opened the snack cooler again and this time, (another yummy snack)
appeared. The kids opened the cooler over and over, and each time they were given more snacks.
Mom started to get (adjective) as she saw the kids stuffing their faces with so much junk food.
The mom wished that the cooler would stop. The next time the kids opened the cooler, there wasn’t
a new snack, there was (something smelly) . It made the whole car smell. The kids threw it out
the window. All of their snacks smelled like it too! They started to cry. The mom didn’t want to hear
her children cry so she wished again for snacks. The kids ate (number) pieces of junk food and
even the mom didn’t care anymore.

Printable Mad Libs | Unleash Your Students’ Creativity With These Incredibly Fun Mad Lib Stories
Do you want to teach kids about parts of speech, grammar, and vocabulary while having lots of fun at the same time? Then try Mad Libs! Below, you’ll find a collection of printable Mad Libs that you can download for free and use in class. We’ll also share some useful information on how you can easily make your own printable Mad Libs for your lessons. But first, for those of you not familiar with Mad Libs, let’s look at what they are and how you can use these in class.
What Are Mad Libs?
Mad Libs is a word game that involves creating a story or paragraph by filling in missing words. The game follows a simple template where certain words, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, are left blank. Players take turns suggesting words to fill in these blanks, without knowing the context of the story. Once all the words are filled in, the completed story is read aloud, often resulting in humorous and nonsensical combinations.
How To Play Mad Libs In Class
Playing Mad Libs in the classroom is a fun and effective way to teach students about the different parts of speech. There are several ways you can play Mad Libs in class, but here’s the one that we find works best when using printable Mad Libs.
1: Choose Or Create Your Mad Lib Story
The first step to playing Mad Libs in class is to decide which Mad Lib to use. You can choose one of the free printable Mad Libs below, or create your own Mad Lib Story (more on that below!)
2: List The Required Words On The Board
Next, write a list of the words that are needed to complete the Mad Lib. For example, if you look at one of the printable Mad Libs below, you’ll see that to complete the story you’ll need words like ‘ Child’s name ‘, ‘ a verb ending in -ing’ , ‘ adjective ‘, etc.
3: Elicit The Words From Students
Next, it’s time to elicit these words from the students. Work down the list of words that are needed to complete the story and ask students to come up with a word for each one. For example, for ‘adjective’, students might say ‘ scary ‘, ‘ blue ‘, ‘ exciting ‘, etc.
4: Read The Story Aloud
Now comes the fun part! Reading the completed story! Print out the Mad Lib story and provide one to each student or pair of students. Or, if you want to save paper, you can simply display the PDF file on the screen.
Read the story together as a class, replacing the words in brackets with the words you elicited from students earlier. The story is likely to be very silly and nonsensical, which is what makes Mad Libs so much fun!
5: Choose New Words For The Story
We find that when playing Mad Libs in class, using the same story a second time with different words is a lot of fun! Now that students know the story, they can be even more creative and come up with a real wacky and entertaining story. You can do this together as a class, or split the class into pairs or small teams to create a fun Mad Lib Story.

How To Make Your Own Printable Mad Lib
Making your own printable Mad Lib is not as difficult as you might think, especially with the advent of AI tools like ChatGPT. Here is a super easy method for making your own Mad Libs:
Step 1: Decide On A Theme
The first step is to decide on what you want your Mad Lib to be about. Your theme could be anything from a trip to the zoo to a mission to Mars. You can even make the theme related to your current lesson topics.
Step 2: Type Prompt In To ChatGPT
Next, open ChatGPT on your computer and type in a prompt instructing Chatgpt to create a Mad Lib story for you. Be sure to include things like the theme or situation, the number of blanks you want, and the target audience (i.e., kids, teenagers, adults, etc) in your prompt. For example, “ Create a Mad Lib for kids about a trip to Mars with 10 blanks. “
Step 3: Copy And Paste The Mad Lib Into A Word Processor
Next, take the Mad Lib story and copy and paste it into a word processor. If you want to design your Mad Lib further and use images and various fonts and colors, then we recommend using Canva .
Step 4: Save As PDF And Print
The final step is to save the document as a PDF and print. If you’re using Canva, you can do this by clicking on the ‘Share’ button in the top right corner and choosing ‘Download’ and then choosing ‘PDF Print’.

What are Mad Libs?
Mad Libs are a word replacement game that provide an engaging way to reinforce your normal grammar studies. They can also help with vocabulary skills and reading comprehension. You just need a fill-in-the blank printable to have fun with Mad Libs. You can also find simple Mad Libs for younger kids that mainly ask for a few parts of speech, or you can find advanced versions for your older kids that include all the parts of speech they’ve studied.
Here’s how Mad Libs work. You’ll have a bunch of blanks to fill in without knowing the context or the story ahead of time. You’ll be asked for nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs and simply supply the part of speech that comes to your head first. Then the fun begins. You start plugging in your answers to a read aloud story and the results are hilarious!
The original Mad Libs concept was created by Leonard Stern and Roger Price in 1958. Since then, more than 110 million copies have been sold.
How Do You Make Your Own Mad Libs?
You can have your kids make their own Mad Libs to get some fun writing practice into your homeschool day too! One child can write the Mad Lib story and a sibling can fill in the blanks.
Just have your student write out a very short story – just a paragraph or two will work. The story itself doesn’t have to be funny. Once the blanks are filled in it will definitely sound silly!
What are the main parts of speech used in Mad Libs? Here are common choices:
- Noun: the name of a person, place, thing, or idea (librarian, lake, dog, freedom)
- Adjective: a word that describes a noun (silly, green)
- Verb: a word that does an action (jump, slide, smile)
- Adverb: a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb (slowly, very)
Once your child has written their short story, they can decide which words to pull out and change into blanks. When you pull out the word, note which part of speech it is and write that part of speech under the blank.
If your blanks need some help, you can specify things like:
- Verb ending in -ing rather than simply “verb”
- Plural noun rather than simply “noun”
- Past tense verb rather than simply “verb”
- Type of animal rather than simply “noun”
How Do You Make a Mad Lib for Kids?
You can make a Mad Lib story about anything! The fun comes when you substitute words that are out of context. But if you need some inspiration, here are some topics to consider if you want to create your own Mad Libs for your kids or encourage them to write some:
- Song lyrics
- A paragraph from a book
- Seasonal or holiday based
- Write about a person in the family
- Family vacation
- Homeschool day
- Fairy tales
- Newspaper headlines
If you don’t want to create your own, check out these FREE printable options below to fit any season, holiday, or theme you’re looking for.

Create Fun-Filled Stories with Road Trip Mad Libs
Road trip mad libs: the perfect road trip companion, what are mad libs.
Mad Libs are a popular word game that has been entertaining people of all ages for over 60 years. The game was created by Leonard Stern and Roger Price in the 1950s and has since become a staple in the world of party games, classroom activities, and road trips. Mad Libs are essentially fill-in-the-blank stories, where players are asked to provide words to fill in missing parts of a sentence. The catch is that they don’t know what the story is about until they’ve filled in all the blanks.
For example, a Mad Lib story might start with a sentence like "I went to the __ and saw a __ ." The player would then be asked to provide two words, such as "library" and "giraffe." The story would then continue, incorporating the player’s words into the narrative. The end result is a hilarious and often nonsensical story that can be enjoyed by everyone playing.
How to Play Mad Libs On a Road Trip
Playing Mad Libs on a road trip is a fun and easy way to pass the time. The game can be played with just two people or with a large group, making it a great option for families, couples, and friends. To play Mad Libs on a road trip, all you need is a Mad Libs book or some printable Mad Libs sheets, a pen or pencil, and a sense of humor.
To start a game of Mad Libs, one player acts as the "storyteller" and reads the story out loud, leaving out the missing words. The other players take turns filling in the blanks with their own words, without knowing what the story is about. Once all the blanks have been filled in, the storyteller reads the completed story out loud, revealing the often hilarious and nonsensical narrative.
Mad Libs can be played with any type of story, from action-packed adventures to romantic comedies to horror stories. You can even make up your own Mad Libs stories using a template, which can be found online or in Mad Libs books.
Benefits of Playing Road Trip Mad Libs
Playing Mad Libs on a road trip has many benefits, beyond just being a fun way to pass the time. For one, it encourages creativity and imagination, as players are challenged to come up with unique and interesting words to fill in the blanks. It also promotes literacy skills, as players are required to understand the parts of speech and how they fit together to create a coherent story.
In addition, playing Mad Libs on a road trip can help to alleviate boredom and reduce stress. It’s a great way to break up long stretches of driving or waiting in traffic, and it can provide a much-needed distraction from the stresses of daily life. Mad Libs can also be a great way to bond with friends and family, as you work together to create hilarious and memorable stories.
Tips for Creating Fun-Filled Stories
To create the most fun-filled Mad Libs stories on your road trip, there are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind. First, try to choose stories that are appropriate for your group, whether that’s silly and lighthearted or more mature and sophisticated. It’s also a good idea to mix up the types of stories you choose, such as including some action-packed adventures and some romantic comedies.
Another tip is to encourage creativity and imagination when filling in the blanks. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with unexpected and hilarious words. You can also try to come up with themed Mad Libs stories, such as ones that relate to your road trip destination or to a particular holiday or event.
Finally, don’t be afraid to let loose and have fun with Mad Libs. The whole point of the game is to create silly and nonsensical stories that will make you and your fellow players laugh out loud. So don’t take it too seriously and enjoy the ride!
Playing Mad Libs on a road trip is a great way to pass the time and have fun with friends and family. It’s a simple game that requires nothing more than a sense of humor and a willingness to be creative and silly. Mad Libs can also provide numerous benefits, such as promoting literacy skills, reducing stress, and encouraging bonding with others.
