A look at the Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022

traveller core rulebook update 2022 review

When I first read about Mongoose Publishing releasing a rather expensive update to their Traveller 2nd Edition core rulebook I expected a cash grab. Over the years I have often criticised Mongoose for over-priced products with questionable quality. Especially the editing was often bad to non-existent. But I have to admit that their second edition of Traveller products were actually an improvement. I really liked the modernized layout and higher production values, even though some of the artwork was really, really bad.

traveller core rulebook update 2022 review

Another reason why I haven’t bought anything in a while from Mongoose was their treatment of third party publishers during the transition from 1st Edition to 2nd Edition of their Traveller line. This combined with the questionable quality of their products lead to me avoiding them for quite some time.

Even after all this I was still slightly intrigued when the new corebook was announced. The improved layout looked like a good start and the fact that this corebook included starship generation rules made me think that just maybe Mongoose had learned a lesson. Eventually I made up my mind and ordered a print copy from Mongoose Publishing directly. Why? Because it’s the best deal available. You get the hardcover book plus the PDF for £45 plus shipping, which is totally fine.

After ordering I expected to get access to the PDF at once, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. My PayPal transaction was still on hold, so I reached out to Mongoose. Interestingly enough, you have to email Mongoose’s owner Matthew Sprange directly and to my surprise he responded pretty quickly and immediately made the PDF available to me. That is actually pretty good customer support especially if you consider that at this point I haven’t even paid the guy. The transaction was still on hold until they were ready to ship the hardcover book a few days later.

To my surprise the book came directly from Studio2Publishing in the US which Mongoose obviously cooperates with. The about 260-paged hardcover book is well bound and looks a lot better than the original 2E corebook from a few years ago. I’ve included a couple images from the book below.

Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022

Content-wise not that much has changed from the older version of the rules with the big exception being that they included starship generation this time. I assume that all the errata has been included but – to be honest – I haven’t actually checked yet. At a first glance bad editing doesn’t seem to be an issue this time. There are still a few pieces of art that don’t look that great but overall the quality is in my opinion much better.

One thing which might put off old-school Traveller fans is that everything looks modernized – gone is the retro-SF charm older editions of Traveller had. Personally I don’t mind. At this moment I am much more interested in using Traveller to springboard my own ideas than using it for a traditional Third Imperium game. Given my recent track record I guess I won’t get any game off the ground, but that’s another matter…

Would I recommend anyone getting this book? That depends. If you already own their last core rulebook and are happy with it, there’s not much reason to get the new one. Sure, the art is nicer and the layout is more readable, but overall the mechanics are the same. The addition of the starship creation rules is a nice tough, but at this point most Traveller fans probably already own a copy of High Guard anyway.

If you are new to Traveller, I highly recommend getting this book. It contains everything you need to start playing and it’s a clear improvement over their older rulebooks. Everything else from the 2E line should also be still fully compatible although I guess in the future they’ll eventually update a couple of other books as well.

To my total surprise I really like what Mongoose did with this new book and I wish they had done so from the start. I am still a bit cautious because of their track record, but overall I am looking forward to where things are going. Even though I have a few ideas for campaign settings I am still tempted to check out their new line of 2300AD products, which got a similar update as well.

By the way, alongside with the new core rules Mongoose recently released Traveller: Explorer’s Edition for $1 (or your local equivalent). This PDF (there will be a printed version for £15 later this year) contains all the rules needed to play plus sector generations. I think they also didn’t include all the careers so it’s no full replacement for the core rules, but it’s great if you want to get your feet wet.

I really wish Mongoose Publishing all the best with this new line of products and hope that they’ll not repeat some of the mistakes of the past. It would be a welcome change being able to wholeheartedly recommend their products in the future. The Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 is a great start!

Thanks for the review. I’ve been debating whether to get this since I already have the 2e book and (as you suspected) the High Guard book. I have to admit I was put off by the fact that they didn’t freely offer this as at least a digital update to those of us who already had the pdf. But I know now that I don’t need it, so there’s that.

Tabletop Review – Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 – Mongoose Publishing

traveller core rulebook update 2022 review

About 5 years ago I took the plunge back in the world of table top RPG’s. I spent years just not having the time and left them behind, so it seems like now having gotten back in since the late 90’s, I am making up for last time. I can’t always get the games I want to the table, but I’m obsessing over the books and the details of the games I do. One game I remember playing 1-2 times as a kid was the hard science fiction game Traveller, and I was excited to see not only has Mongoose Publishing kept the brand alive in the 21 st century, but they’ve issued a new Core Rulebook for 2022, so a perfect time for me to take a dive in.

Traveller for those unaware is one of the first generation of tabletop RPG’s having come out in 1977 through Game Designers Workshop, before making the rounds through various publishers over the decades until finding a home with Mongoose, who it appears are doing a stellar job on the brand (although I will need to dive deeper on the core book at a later date). Traveller is a D6 based game, where most of your skill checks are made using 2D6 plus a modifier, coming from Call of Cthulhu, Rune Quest, and D&D, this is a bit of a fun change. The artwork on the cover is of a pulpy, fun science fiction kind that would not be out of place on an issue of Asimov’s or Analog Science Fiction from the 70’s.

Character creation in Traveller is sort of AMAZING. In it you can go to school, fail, start a career, start another career, basically live a life, before you even step foot out in the game as an adventurer. The recommendation, by the way, is to this character creation with your party at the table, that way your life path becomes connected with the life path of your party, so you have reasons to know each other. It reminds me a lot of the recent Cyberpunk Red Life Path system, but with significant more consequence and depth. There are 6 stats that make up your character during creation strength, dexterity, endurance, social standing, intellect, and education.

Combat is pretty straight-forward, you could use maps and minis, but I play most of my games online with voice over, and I could see no issues with skipping all that here. Melee combat usese a strength modifier, weapon type adds in to the damage. The list of weapons and equipment is pretty extensive, less so for armor. In Traveller you take damage to your physical stats endurance, strength, and dexterity. Your character is dead when all of those hit zero, and damage starts with endurance. Again it’s an interesting way to do this. It will take some getting used to, but overall the book is pretty clear about how it all works out.

The back-half of the book deal with space combat which gets extremely detailed with weapon types, angles, etc. Since I’m not running a game yet, I didn’t get overly deep in this section just a quick overview sufficed for my reading, but I am very excited about this, along with the chapters on spacecraft construction with details customization and creation of your parties own vehicles. I simply love that a game will go this deep on this. The remaining sections deal with things like universe and world building, trade, and psionic rules. The Traveller Core Rulebook Update for 2022 is a fantastic read, and I honestly can’t wait to get deeper into this game, and get it to my table. Anyone who has been hesitant on Traveller should be adding this to their library and should definitely check this out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Science Fiction 40 Years in the Making: The Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 Reviewed

Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 (Mongoose Publishing)

Publisher: Mongoose Publishing

Author: Matthew Sprange

Genre: Latest edition of the Traveller roleplaying game corebook

Pages: 264 pages

MSRP: 59.99 in hardcover or 30.00 in PDF at DriveThruRPG

Traveller has existed as a roleplaying game since 1977, but this reviewer has no personal experience with any previous versions in which to compare the 2022 edition. Traveller is a d6 game. The book is in full color and is written clearly with colored boxes to highlight ideas or rules. It has a mixture of good classic science fiction art reminiscent of the hard science fiction cover art from the 1960s and 1970s and some weaker 3d images images for ships and vehicles. The base system tries to be universal using tech level to determine the type of game you will run.

Traveller Core Rulebook 2022 Interior #1 (Mongoose Publishing)

The life path system allows players to make more experienced characters. Players will roll to see if they have mishaps, life events and promotions. They can make older characters by risking stat loss, debt, or gaining enemies. Those who want balanced characters or a balance between characters will find this off putting, but those who like randomness and backstory will enjoy creating characters from a snot nosed youth to a veteran space captain.

The corebook has three races, Aslan, Human and Vargr. The Aslan and Vargr each get a one page description, but there are no unique life paths provided with the races. Players looking for non-humanoids will be disappointed unless they get other supplements. The system assumes characters will be human by default in the Imperium.

The book has plenty of skills, which will vary in usefulness depending on the type of game played. The characters are limited to their total skill points, which is based on a characters intelligence and education. Skills are combined with a statistic that makes sense for the task. The rules basically follow a 2D6+ skill + a characteristic dice modifier + other dice modifiers. The final calculated roll must meet or exceed the difficulty number varying from routine (6+) to Impossible (16+). The margin or success or failure then determines its actual effect. The system gives examples for time frames for each task.

Traveller Core Rulebook #2022 Interior 2 (Mongoose Publishing)

The corebook includes simple rules for poisons and diseases, but include more detailed effects of radiation poisoning. Environmental effects such as gravity, temperature, weather, etc are briefly described.

The encounter section briefly describes alien creatures. Creatures are given hits, behaviors, size, speed, attacks and skills. The rules recommend driving off or causing an animal to go unconscious. It is refreshing to see monsters do not always fight to the death in a system. The tables for intelligent NPCs are sufficient to quickly develop a decent character for the players to meet. Those looking for detailed NPCs and an extensive beastiary will be disappointed.

The equipment tables are fairly long. The armor table should have included traits (similar to the weapons table) to determine the protection it provides rather than requiring the a reading of the description to determine what it protects against. The augmentation section is brief so those looking for a cyberpunk style game will not be happy with the selection in the corebook.

Vehicle and space combat get fairly detailed. Movement, firing angles, etc are included in the rules. This is where the game delves into wargaming and would probably be better if they spun a separate supplement/game much like Star Frontiers did with Knight Hawks for vehicle combat.

Traveller Core Rulebook #2022 Interior 3 (Mongoose Publishing)

Rules for psionics is provided in the game, but only with gamemaster permission. The powers are more subtle in line with Babylon 5 psi-corps rather than a superhero game. Psionic characters will be required to go through their own life path. These type of characters are not integral to the game and can be removed without issue if they do not appeal to the group.

The last few sections of the book include rules for trade and world creation. The book recommends the players handle the trade section, while the gamemaster focuses on the adventure. The world creation tables can get complex, and GMs are strongly suggested to memorize what each code on a world means.

Overall, the system will appeal to groups looking for a science fiction experience rather than science fantasy with relatively simple rules. A session zero is highly recommended to create the characters and ships before delving into play. Gamemasters will have no issue with finding supplements should they delve deeper into the game.

This game have always made interested in it because of the spacefaring feel it has, and it have had it all the way since the seventies. What also makes me glad is its life path system. Especially since it recommends generating characters with a group of players all at once. This makes for drama and cool connections between the player characters before the game has even started. I don’t have time to go into more detail here, but since the game itself is connected to the Foundation space lore, it is something special, at least for me.

Sablemage

  • Spacecraft construction is back in the core book, at least for the kind of ships a band of PCs and their entourage could operate. I rarely use anything other than the standard ship designs these days so I have no strong feelings about this change.
  • Isometric deck plans have been replaced by normal 2D deck plans with an overhead view. I am strongly in favour of this change. Deck plans and full design notes are provided for all the old favourites.
  • The example subsector (Sindal) in the previous edition has been deleted. It was nice to have, and a good tie-in to The Pirates of Drinax, but would not have been my first choice. I’m not bothered either way by this one.
  • Is there a point-buy option for character generation? No; disappointingly, there is not. That would be very helpful for the kind of games I run these days. The Companion 2024 update was in DriveThrRPG’s Christmas in July sale, so I got it for that purpose; I won’t give that its own review, as the only change I picked up on was the return of vector space combat.
  • Are there usable deck plans rather than isometric ones? Yes, there are. Happy dance.
  • Is Dogfighting still there in space combat? Yes, it is. Not sure how I feel about that; I’ve never used it.
  • Are there any other major changes? Not really.

The update underwhelmed me so the only thing I posted on it was how they’d fixed dogfighting. https://delta-pavonis.blogspot.com/2021/12/mongoose-traveller-2020-has-fixed-worst.html?m=0

On the other hand, I was very happy with it. But it was the first Traveller book I've bought since The Traveller Book , so I wasn't measuring it against anything modern.

Guvnor

It's a good version. Wish they will drop the *Update* subtitle soon.

Layout change was nice. If I didn’t have the 2017 version I’d have loved it more.

Have the typos and errors reported in the pdf version been fixed in print?

Unfortunately I think the files went to print before advanced buyers got to review the PDF so some of the errors noted (missing battledress entry on the armour table and 1D6 Autocannon damage) appear in the hard copy. But on the whole I think errors were few and far between and I am sure a Errata should be available soon.

  1. A look at the Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022

By the way, alongside with the new core rules Mongoose recently released Traveller: Explorer's Edition for $1 (or your local equivalent). This PDF (there will be a printed version for £15 later this year) contains all the rules needed to play plus sector generations. I think they also didn't include all the careers so it's no full ...

Updated Version of Core 2022. I noticed that there's an updated version of Core Rules 2022 available on DTRPG this morning. 22. MGT2E Core Rulebook 2022 Update vs. High Guard. : r/traveller

Also if it helps, a High Guard update is being published this year. If you want to build ships I would get high guard. Buying the rulebook refresh would get you very little you don't have already. The new CRB only has basic shipbuilding, not anywhere near what the current High Guard has, much less the upcoming High Guard redux.
