The 7 Best Sites to Pick Random Travel Destinations for Trips

When you can't decide where to travel, let fate pick the destination—or use these sites to randomly tell you where to go.

A good vacation can completely change your life. Whether it's through new exciting experiences or well-deserved rest and recuperation, everyone loves a holiday. But do you know what everyone hates? Planning a vacation.

With all the driving, flights, planning, and organizing, sometimes it feels like you need a vacation from planning your vacation. One of the most difficult aspects is actually just selecting where to go. To help speed up your planning and remove some unnecessary stress, you can use random holiday generators. Here are seven random vacation destination generators for you to use.

1. Earth Roulette

Earth Roulette is for the confused wanderer who doesn't want to think. Click a button, and you'll get a suggestion for a country to visit, along with all the research you would need for it.

The website will give you a sentence breakdown of the main reason to travel to the proposed location. If you're interested, you can scroll down on the page to discover everything you'll need to book your holiday. You can read about places to see, the type of food locals eat, photos of the scenery, and even hotel and flight options currently available.

In case you don't like the recommended country, click Spin it to find a new random destination. If you have certain preferences, the Filters button allows you to only show results that match a certain budget, temperature, continent, activities, and more.

You can also select a country under the website's Top travel destinations section, and it will suggest different places you can visit in that country.

2. The Vacation Hunt

The Vacation Hunt is a travel agency that offers surprise vacations. All you need to do is fill out a survey that asks for information about your ideal vacation. You have to fill out details like when you plan to travel, the length of your vacation, and everything else related to the vacation experience, like what you'd like to do, places to avoid, and more.

If you don't like the feeling of booking with classic travel websites like Expedia and Hotwire, you'll love picking your next destination using The Vacation Hunt. After completing the survey, you must select a surprise vacation package. The Vacation Hunt caters to everyone through its packages.

The website has an All-American Adventure package if you'd like an American-exclusive destination. Want to travel to European destinations? Select the European Escape package. There's also an exclusive package if you love hot places like the Caribbean, Mexico, or Latin America. Lastly, the International Intrigue package offers a wide array of travel destinations.

The website lists prices during the selection process, so you know what to expect when booking. If you need help with language translation on your international travels, check out the best online translators you can use in the real world .

3. Pack Up + Go

Looking to do some exclusive travel in the US? Pack Up + Go is one of the best options available. Unlike The Vacation Hunt, Pack Up + Go only offers US-only surprise travel packages.

The trip focuses on surprise as the main aspect. You can pick holidays focused around road trips, outdoors, staycations, or planes/trains. The website will also ask you questions regarding your previous holidays and your goals for this upcoming adventure.

After you answer the questions and select a budget, Pack Up + Go will plan a complete holiday for you to enjoy. With this travel site, you really can just pack up and go because everything else is already prepared!

You will need to create an account to use Pack Up + Go, unlike some of the other listed travel sites.

4. Atlas Obscura's Unusual Trips

Cliché travel destinations often sound boring, which is why you skip them. Atlas Obscura specializes in finding offbeat travel ideas in popular cities or countries.

Unique Trips are paid tours, so you are free to buy them from them and go with other people. Otherwise, if the dates or cost isn't working out for you, you can check out the entire itinerary of each Unique Trip to plan your own trip there.

Browse through both upcoming trips and tours already concluded. There are enough travel ideas here to satisfy the desires of every wandering soul.

5. LuckyTrip

Although this app is primarily for European residents, the great design layout and easy-to-use features meant that it was an absolute must-add to this list.

LuckyTrip is an extremely budget-conscious random travel generator. The first step is your budget. After that, simply press the Lucky button, and LuckyTrip will automatically plan out the location, the hotel, and the experience and give you the associated cost per person.

You can change your settings to adjust the number of people, dates, accommodation style, and even destination entertainment. This app is a truly all-encompassing travel generator. Since the website might be somewhat confusing to use, you can download the LuckyTrip app for a streamlined experience.

Download: LuckyTrip for Android | iOS (Free)

6. Travel Republic

If you aren't as concerned about your budget, Travel Republic generates random destinations based on your perfect holiday.

The website starts by asking what type of holiday you want. Then it asks if you're traveling with friends, family, or a partner—which is a bit disappointing if you're planning a solo escape. After, it asks you to pick from a list of options which two activities you are most interested in while on holiday. It will then provide you with a suggested location.

This is where Travel Republic gets interesting. The website displays your travel suggestions in navigable bubbles. Looking for something a bit cooler, navigate to the suggested travel bubble. Interested in more theme parks? There's a travel bubble for that too. This site gives less general information but great comparison options.

If you find somewhere you like, press Book Now , and you'll be taken to the main travel website for reservations.

7. Random City Generator

Random City Generator isn't a fully-fledged random travel destination picker. Instead, it only suggests cities around the world that you can visit. There's no filter here, tap the Next Random City button, and it'll suggest a city.

After generating a random city, the website gives you background details about it, like what the city is best known for and the major tourist attractions and popular activities. It also provides popular foods that you should purpose to eat while visiting the city.

Once you've finalized the travel destination, these travel planning apps can help you find tourist attractions . If you don't like the suggestion, just hit the Next Random City button again to view a different city.

Solo Escape or Friendly Voyage?

It can be nearly impossible to pick a vacation spot. With so many places to see in the world and so little holiday time for most, it can be anxiety-inducing trying to pick the perfect place. This anxiety is often only increased by the addition of planning with friends.

Avoid the stress next time by using one of the sites above to pick your vacation destination randomly. And make sure you check out some tips to take great vacation photos on your travels.

For most people, the joy of traveling isn’t the researching or booking—it’s that moment you step off the airplane in a place you’ve never been. So why not skip the planning and let someone else chart your next adventure for you, including choosing the destination? Besides, who cares where you go when you’ve got expert travel agents finalizing every last detail for you?

Introducing the latest trend in travel: surprise trips to places that won’t be revealed to you until it’s go time.

trip planner random

Jubel , a tech-enabled travel company founded in 2015 in California, offers customized multi-destination getaways and route planning. It can also save you more than 55 percent in travel costs compared with booking a trip yourself, thanks to insider travel deals. Jubel also offers surprise trips .

Fill out its survey with your preferred dates, budget, and travel style, and it’ll send you a trip proposal. You can be completely surprised by the destination or learn the continent or country ahead of time. Once you’ve booked, you’ll get sealed envelopes to open along your journey, plus details on what to pack and when to show up at the airport. International trips start at around $1,000 per person per week.

Pack Up and Go

trip planner random

Want a weekend getaway in the U.S. without any hassle of planning it? Enter Pack Up and Go , founded in 2016 in Pittsburgh. Give the company your dates and budget, and complete a quick survey (sample question: Do you want action, relaxation, or culture?), and it will do the rest for you. Prior to your trip, you’ll get a packing list, flight information, and a weather forecast. Days before you leave, an envelope with your destination and itinerary will arrive in the mail. Open it at the airport. Trips start at $400 per person.

The Vacation Hunt

trip planner random

Whether you have three days or two weeks, the expert travelers at the Vacation Hunt , started in 2017 by a husband and wife in Washington, D.C., will plan a trip for you. Tell the reps what you’re looking for (spas or zoos? bars or museums?) and they’ll start sending you clues as to where you’re going. Packaged trips in the U.S. start at $750 per person; international trips start at $950. They also offer gift certificates if you want to give someone else a surprise trip.

Magical Mystery Tours

trip planner random

With Magical Mystery Tours , you won’t know where you’re going until you show up at the airport. First, enter your preferences: Do you want a foreign trip? Do you dislike the cold or the beach? Would you prefer heading to the desert or someplace tropical? Then input your dates, budget, and who you’re traveling with. The company will take care of the details. Magical Mystery Tours has been booking destination vacations to locations all over the globe since 2009. Cost depends on the length of the trip, whether it’s international or domestic travel, and the kind of accommodations you want. Weekend trips for two start at $1,500.

Surprise Me Trips

Choose between quick road trips from your hometown or far-flung destinations via airplane. You’ll get details about what to bring and where to be just before your departure. For its weekend road trips, tell the company where you want to start, and it will plan a surprise itinerary around your region, including a few nights in different locales and major landmarks and activities to check out along the way. Despite this travel company’s name, it will also arrange trips that don’t come as a surprise, if that’s more your thing. Surprise Me Trips was launched by three well-traveled friends in Texas in 2016. Weekend regional road trips start at $375.

Black Tomato

trip planner random

In 2017, high-end travel company Black Tomato  debuted its  Get Lost service, which creates adventurous tailor-made expeditions to wilderness destinations like Mongolia or the Arctic that are kept entirely a secret from you. Here’s how it works: select a polar, jungle, coastal, desert, or mountain trip—or have Black Tomato choose that, too—and book at least six months in advance to give you time to train and prepare. When you arrive at your location, you’ll be outfitted with all the gear you need, plus a private transfer from the airport to your starting point and a satellite phone for emergencies. Chart your way through a series of mapped-out checkpoints using navigational technology and your own two feet. The journey ends at a luxury retreat. Average Get Lost trips cost around $15,000 per person—but there are shorter, less expensive options, too.

Rustic Pathways

trip planner random

Designed for high school students looking for an exciting summer group trip, student-travel company Rustic Pathways offers a mystery trip to an unknown international destination. Before departure you’ll get a Patagonia duffel bag sent to you that’s filled with clues and a few essentials. Then arrive at the designated airport and spend the next two weeks exploring foreign cities and remote villages with other intrepid students as a guide leads the way. As of press time, there were still a few spots left on an upcoming trip in late June. It costs $5,995, not including airfare.

10 Companies That Will Plan a Surprise Vacation for You

Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.

What if you got ready for a vacation and showed up at the airport with no idea where your plane was headed? That’s the idea behind a new type of travel agency that will plan surprise vacations for very adventurous travelers. At the airport, you’ll receive a destination and custom itinerary (usually based on a survey or interview to determine your travel style). The idea is that you leave the planning, details, and logistics to someone else, and just pack up and go. Here’s how to take a surprise vacation of a lifetime with the help of these 10 travel companies.

Two people relaxing on beach chairs in front of a pool at sunset

BlackTomato

If you’ve always wanted to test your survival skills, Bear Grylls-style, BlackTomato’s elaborate surprise adventure tours might be the next best thing. Choose between terrains like “Polar, Jungle, Desert, Mountain, and Coastal,” and BlackTomato’s experts will figure out a country to drop you in—with advice on how to train for your expedition beforehand. Then it’s up to you to navigate through a series of checkpoints (with BlackTomato ops teams watching from afar to make sure all is well).

Blind Experiences

Imagine a surprise honeymoon where stressed-out couples didn’t have to plan anything at all. That idea kickstarted the luxury travel agency Blind Experiences , which then expanded into putting together tailored itineraries for families with young kids and multi-generational groups— with more surprises gradually revealed throughout the trip via sealed envelopes

The surprise trip survey for Jubel begins by narrowing in on a country, continent or destination (beach or mountains?), then asks whether you’re more of a museum or nightlife person (you can pick both, for example). Jubel’s experts go from there to put together a proposal for you that’s just vague enough that your vacation is still a big surprise.

10 Trips Millennial Travelers Will Love

Magical Mystery Tours

The founders of Magical Mystery Tours started their surprise travel agency back in 2009, and they’ve planned many customized vacations since then. The questionnaire quizzes travelers on everything from whether seasickness is a concern to which places they’ve visited and absolutely loved.

Pack Up & Go

Looking to go on a surprise road trip, a plane or train trip, or even a staycation in your own town? Those are the types of trips that Pack Up & Go specializes in, and travelers have headed off to 125 U.S. cities for a fun and completely unexpected trip with a planned-out itinerary of activities and meals.

Spontaneous and courageous travelers are the ideal clients for SkipTown , an agency that will plan short surprise trips for you—even if you can only get away for one day. A “daycation” includes one night’s accommodation, one meal reservation, and one activity, all of which will be unexpected.

The 10 Best Group Travel Tour Companies for 2021

With Surprisit , you’ll find out your unique surprise destination a few days before your vacation begins (in case you need a bit of time for some Googling). The agency plans surprise trips in the Caribbean in addition to the U.S. and Canada, as well as a “ Eurotrip ” where you head off to a new European city every three days.

The Vacation Hunt

If you’re a beach person, but you still want a big surprise, The Vacation Hunt will set you up with an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, Mexico or Latin America. Other surprise destinations for this travel agency include a trip within Europe or the United States, or you can open it up to any destination in the world. Surprise honeymoons are a speciality for The Vacation Hunt as well.

The Best Tour Groups for Seniors

Whisked Away

Leave the real-world behind for a while with Whisked Away , which will plan surprise week-long flying or driving trips. The idea is to make this the easiest vacation ever for honeymooners, solo vacationers, families, girls’ groups, or anyone who wants an out-of-the-ordinary experience.

Splurge trips, surprise vow renewals, solo adventures: Whym will plan a surprise vacation for all sorts of travelers. At the moment, the travel agency is only sending travelers out in the U.S.—and the surprises keep coming throughout the vacation, with blank spaces in your itinerary that are revealed gradually via “whymsies” text messages.

Tired of searching for a new vacation getaway? Destinations.ai was created to make the process fun, easy and informative. We want to help you find the ideal travel destination by matching your preferences with our recommendations and helping you create an unforgettable adventure that’s perfect for your next trip.

Want to travel but don’t know where to go?

Are you looking for a fun new way to plan your next vacation? Do you want to travel but don’t know where to go? You came to the right place!

Destinations.ai is a travel generator for the United States that finds the best travel destination for you. The app will generate a destination list to choose from to start building the most ideal holiday destination for you, then give its description and estimated travel time from your current location. It also provides information about hotels, restaurants, and activities nearby. You can even use it with friends or family members if they too have access to their own devices!

How to Use the Vacation Generator

Enter your preferences and we’ll select a travel destination for you to travel to based on your response.

You can use our activity filters to find where to go on your next trip and what activities are available. Click the “activity” button and select one of the options from this dropdown list:

  • Adventure : You’re looking for an activity that will test your limits physically or mentally.
  • Family-Friendly : You’re traveling with kids and want a place where they can play safely in nature, but still have some fun!
  • Foodie : You love eating local food, unique dishes, fine dining experiences – anything that’s out of the ordinary (but still tasty).
  • Nature Lover : You enjoy hikes through forests or mountains; camping trips in national parks; exploring hidden waterfalls; canoeing down rivers.
  • Party Animal : You’re looking forward to partying it up with people from all over the world! Whether you prefer loud music at clubs or quiet conversations at bars – we’ve got you covered!

Select an option below if this best describes what type of vacationer/traveler you are so we can show recommendations tailored specifically for YOU.

Use our activity filters to find the perfect place

There are plenty of filters to help you find the perfect travel destination. You can filter by activity, the city you want to visit, and even the type of weather you’d like.

You can also use our special feature: “Continue exploring this region” with ours. The more you explore, the more likely you’ll find a place that suits your tastes!

Use this random vacation generator to find somewhere new and interesting in the US.

Imagine you’re on a road trip, and your GPS goes haywire. You’re lost in the middle of nowhere. What do you do? Turn back around? No way! It’s time to get creative and find a cool place to stay, no matter what it takes (and even if you don’t have cell service).

This is where we come in: We’ve got a nifty little tool called our random vacation generator that can help you find all kinds of awesome places to go when you’re traveling around the US. Just enter your starting point, how long you want to stay at each stop, and whether or not there should be an option for kids or pets (just remember: dogs love going on vacation too!), then click “Generate” to see what we recommend for your trip! Now let’s get out there!

We’ll also suggest some fun stuff like nearby restaurants and attractions so that before long, everyone will be talking about how much fun their family had together on vacation.

If you’re looking for a fun, adventurous, friendly place to spend your next vacation, then look no further. The United States is filled with exciting and unique destinations that will make any trip unforgettable. Whether you want a relaxing getaway or an adventurous excursion, there are plenty of options available—and they’re all right here in this infographic!

Take a minute to enjoy some of the best parts of the country: its scenery, food culture (and beer!), history as well as its many attractions for kids and adults alike. There are so many things to see and do; so much life waiting out there beyond our borders!

What is travel roulette?

Travel roulette is a tool to help you find your next trip. It’s a random generator that will help you find a place to go based on your preferences. The best part? You can control how much randomness there is in your results!

If you want to be surprised by every single result, turn the roulette wheel all the way over to “Full Roulette”. On the other hand, if you want very specific results (i.e., somewhere tropical with zero chance of rain), move it all the way down towards “Specific.”

The results are generated by an AI system that uses machine learning algorithms to learn more about what kind of places people like and dislike based on their choices and then presents them with similar options made from that data set.

What is a vacation generator?

A vacation generator is a tool that helps you find a random place to go. It’s not a travel agent, it’s not a travel site, it’s just a way to discover new places to visit.

I’ve always loved road trips and vacations where we can explore new places, so I built this generator after learning about the concept from friends who have used it. This website is intended for people who want to learn about the world around them and are looking for some inspiration!

How does Destinations.ai work?

The generator is powered by artificial intelligence that selects a random destination for you to visit. The AI uses your preferences to filter the results and then uses a random number generator to select your perfect vacation spot.

But what if you want something more specific? You can always choose from one of our pre-selected destinations, or visit our online store to see all of our products.

This Is the Sunniest City in Europe — and It's the Birthplace of Pablo Picasso

Here's what you need to know to plan a perfect trip to Málaga, Spain.

Málaga, Spain is a sun-seeker's paradise. The city along the nation's southern coast is the sunniest place in Europe , getting more than 280 sunshine hours a month, which works out to more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Málaga sits on the aptly named Costa del Sol, or the "sun coast," but this city has a lot more going for it than just the sun. It's also a cultural paradise and the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.

"Málaga is a fantastic destination because it has a Mediterranean climate. Its winters are mild, and the summers are nice and warm. It has a sometimes-overlooked history rich in Roman history and Moorish influence. There are many cultural activities to do, such as the Picasso Museum and flamenco shows," Kristin Espinar, founder of Must See Spain , shared. And, as with the rest of Spain,  Espinar added, "Málaga has fantastic cuisine — especially fresh local seafood and tapas. Don't miss local chiringuitos , which are seaside seafood restaurants that locals flock to."

Ready to explore this fantastic city? Here's what you need to know about visiting Málaga, Spain.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay at Finca Cortesín, voted the top hotel in Spain and Portugal by our readers.
  • Pablo Picasso was born here — visit the Picasso Museum to learn more about the artist’s life.
  • Spend a day on beautiful La Malagueta Beach.
  • Stroll around the historic center of the city.
  • Visit during the spring or fall to enjoy pleasant weather with fewer crowds.

Best Hotels & Resorts

Gran hotel miramar.

Spend a few days in the lap of luxury with a stay at the Gran Hotel Miramar . The historic palace has been turned into a five-star hotel that looks out onto the Mediterranean. Each of its rooms is decked out with plush furnishings in a soothing natural palette, making the panoramic views the star of the show. The hotel's spa is equally alluring and uses local ingredients for a unique Andalusian touch.

Finca Cortesín

In 2023, Finca Cortesín was named the top hotel in Spain and Portugal by Travel + Leisure readers in the World's Best Awards . Readers fell hard for its white-washed walls, colorful rooms, and gorgeous sea views — not to mention its fantastic Cabell B. Robinson–designed golf course. Here, guests can play a full 18 and then unwind in the spa, which comes with science-forward treatments like oxygenated facials.

Palacio Solecio

Have one more regal stay at the Palacio Solecio , an 18th-century palace-turned-hotel. The hotel is as glamorous as you'd imagine, with four-poster beds, floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that open to spacious patios, and deep soaking tubs in the bathrooms. The hotel's central location makes for easy access to some of the city's most sought-after sites, including Santiago Church, just a few feet away.

Picasso Museum

Explore Pablo Picasso's past and his artistic genius, and discover a few other fantastic artists, at the Picasso Museum inside the Buenavista Palace. Here, guests can explore Picasso's life through his 144 works on rotation and check out the museum's exhibitions, including works by María Blanchard and Joel Meyerowitz.

Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle

Surround yourself with Málaga's history during a visit to the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle . The historic castle is a Moorish fortress that takes up an astonishing 21,310 square meters.  "Must-see attractions really come down to the preferences of the visitors, but the Alcazaba — and nearby Gibralfaro Castle and Roman Theatre — are some of the most highly visited attractions for good reason," Jess Rodley, the bookings director at Andorra Escapes who also travels to Málaga for her summer vacations, shared. "Filled with history, these sites are exceptionally well-preserved."

Mercado Central de Atarazanas

Sample some of Málaga's best flavors with a visit to the Mercado Central de Atarazanas . The market, now located inside a 19th-century building, dates back to the 14th century. Here, travelers and locals alike can mix and mingle over the local meats, cheeses, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. The market is open every Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Carmen Thyssen Museum

Málaga is absolutely spoiled with culture, so make sure to visit at least two museums. Once you hit the Picasso Museum, make your way to the Carmen Thyssen Museum , housed in a restored 16th-century palace. Here, guests can gaze upon 19th-century Spanish paintings, with a special focus on Andalusian art.

La Malagueta Beach

After looking at all the gorgeous human-made art, it's time to look at some created by Mother Nature with a visit to La Malagueta Beach . The beach is just 10 minutes from the city center, making it easy to stop by or spend an entire day. There are also plenty of beachside bars and restaurants to enjoy while you're there.

Centro Histórico

Centro Histórico is the heart of the city. Here, travelers can weave their way through the bustling, narrow streets, check out the historic plazas, and shop in local stores. It's also where you'll find the Málaga Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, and the Carmen Thyssen Museum — all within a few blocks.

La Malagueta

Make your way to La Malagueta, the city’s beachside neighborhood, for a little surf and sand with a splash of culture. While here, visit the Pompidou Centre for a colorful afternoon filled with modern art.

La Victoria

Get a local perspective with a visit to La Victoria , one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Located just north of the city center at the foot of Mount Gibralfaro, this area is well-known for its beauty, traditional homes, local tapas bars, and street art.

The best time to visit Málaga is over the summer season. However, here, the summer extends from late spring into autumn (from May through October). This is when the weather is at its prime and when everyone is out and about enjoying all that fantastic sun. Travelers can also expect plenty of fun summer festivals too, including the Málaga Fair in August, a week-long party that honors all the best parts of Andalusian culture. That said, even if you can't come during the summer, there are plenty of other times worth a visit.

"The shoulder seasons are a great time to visit Málaga. I recommend traveling in the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November)," Espinar said. "The temperatures will be mild, you’ll find smaller crowds, and you’ll have more energy for exploring the city and sights."

Rodley also advocates for the shoulder seasons in April and May and late September: "Visiting during the springtime, you can catch the gorgeous blossoms and flowering jacarandas of the parks and gardens while enjoying the moderate temperatures and fewer crowds when exploring the city and surrounding areas," Rodley explained. "Align your trip with Easter and you'll be able to experience the color, culture, and festivities of Holy Week parades. A visit in September is perfect for wine tours and sightseeing with fewer tourists. At this time of year, it may still be warm enough to enjoy the beach without having to contend for a space on the sand." And, as Espinar added, "If you choose to go in the winter (December to February), you’ll find the benefits of having milder and warmer weather than the rest of Spain. There will be fewer tourists and you’ll enjoy the city. Málaga also has stunning Christmas lights displays, which makes it a great December destination."

To visit this sunny destination, you can fly into Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport , one of the largest airports in Spain. The airport offers plenty of direct flights to cities around Europe and connections to cities around the world via airlines like LATAM, Air France, Easy Jet, and Emirates. The airport is also just a few miles outside of the city center, making it a convenient jumping-off point.

Visitors coming from spots like Madrid and Barcelona may decide to drive — and that's a fantastic idea, as you can drive along the Mediterranean on the AP-7 for a scenic journey.

Travelers can also get to Málaga by taking the train to the María Zambrano station . Trains run regularly from Madrid; the trip takes about three hours and costs around $75.

Getting Around

Renting a car is a great option for those who want to get out and explore beyond the city's bounds and see more of the Costa del Sol region. Car rentals are available at the airport and numerous locations in the city with major operators like Avis, Budget, and Dollar Car Rental.

Málaga also has a robust public transit system that guests can take advantage of during their stay, including both buses and a metro line, which covers most of the city. Travelers can get a single ticket or travel passes, which are easy to recharge online . There are plentiful taxis and Ubers available throughout Málaga, too.

Episode Notes

Google is going deeper into the AI-powered trip planning world . The tech giant is adding itinerary-building capabilities on Gemini Advanced, its paid generative AI chatbot, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes.

Google Vice President Sissie Hsiao said Gemini Advanced can create a personalized vacation plan using multiple sources of information. The trip-planning capability is coming to Gemini Advanced this summer. In addition, Google is also boosting trip-planning options for AI Overviews, the AI feature it released earlier this year.

Next, Ariane Gorin took over as CEO of Expedia Group this week. She explained what she’s looking to accomplish during an interview with Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.

Gorin said that organic growth is one of her priorities, having recently completed a tech migration that brought together several of its brands onto one platform. She added Expedia is focused on growing internationally, but will take a measured approach in doing so.

Gorin added Expedia needs to make improvements to its vacation-rental brand Vrbo. Expedia recently trimmed its 2024 outlook growth mainly due to Vrbo’s slower-than-anticipated recovery.

Finally, Qantas is pulling out of mainland China as it increasingly faces fierce competition from local carriers, writes Airlines Reporter Gordon Smith.

Australia’s flag carrier is citing “low demand” as the reason it will no longer fly from Sydney to Shanghai starting on July 28. Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said flights between the two cities have often been half full since the company relaunched service following the pandemic. Meanwhile, Chinese carriers operate 102 flights weekly between mainland China and Australia’s three largest cities.

Google Gemini Promises to Curb Travel Stress With Enhanced Trip-Planning Features

G oogle's newest features in AI-assisted travel planning could edge out competitors by seamlessly integrating personalized trip recommendations with flight and hotel reservations, the company announced at  Google I/O  Tuesday.

Itinerary planning is one of the most established, everyday uses of AI tools. Ask Gemini to recommend a family-friendly trip to Columbus, Ohio, for example, and it'll lay out an organized, easy-to-follow plan complete with activities and dining. What sets the Gemini model apart, though, is its ability to consider how plans work (or don't) in space and time, the company said.

Similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google has a subscription model for the more sophisticated version of Gemini. The Advanced tier costs $20 per month and includes these upgraded travel planning capabilities, among other features .

CNET's Imad Khan reviewed Gemini , running it through an array of tests, including travel planning. He asked for an itinerary to visit Columbus, Ohio, the town where I grew up. He rightly pointed out that there's no shortage of travel recommendations for big cities like New York or LA, but planning a vacation in Ohio, which is a bit off the beaten tourism path, requires a little more know-how.

Gemini fared OK overall, but it did recommend a restaurant for lunch that didn't actually exist. Apart from that, its recommendations were on par with what I'd suggest to a visiting friend or family member, from the local science museum to the quaint, cobblestone streets of Columbus' German Village.

Hallucinations, like the fictitious restaurant recommendation, are pretty serious errors. Tuesday's new Gemini travel enhancements won't matter much in the grand scheme of things if the model doesn't root out these hallucinations.

Editors' note: CNET is using an AI engine to help create a handful of stories. Reviews of AI products like this, just like  CNET's other hands-on reviews , are written by our human team of in-house experts. For more, see  CNET's AI policy  and  how we test AI .

Google Gemini Promises to Curb Travel Stress With Enhanced Trip-Planning Features

Human-sounding AI can plan, help book your travel. But can you trust it?

trip planner random

It wasn’t so long ago that travelers planned trips without the internet.

“Back in the day, our parents used to go to these travel agents and really kind of express what they were looking for and what kind of vacation they wanted,” said Saad Saeed, co-founder and CEO of Layla, an AI travel planner whose website launched this year. “Slowly, we kind of acclimatized ourselves to start using these search boxes, clicks, these forms and filters.”

Artificial intelligence-driven tools like Layla can now turn back the clock on that experience, engaging with users almost like humans to customize travel plans with lightning speed plus all the resources of the web. But does AI actually make travel planning easier and can it compare to human expertise?

Yes and no. Here’s why.

Can AI actually understand us?

It can try.

“What are you personally looking for in this trip and what do you want out of it?” asked Saeed. “Do you want to reconnect with your partner, for example, or do you want to just feel some adventure and thrill?”

A human travel agent may ask a series of questions to understand a client’s needs. So can generative AI , which picks up on keywords. Mindtrip, an AI planner launched publicly on May 1, has an actual travel quiz that asks users to rank priorities like “Is your ideal vacation day an exhilarating adventure or a relaxing break?” using sliding scales.

“What we get at the end of that quiz, using the AI, is a really customized description,” explained  Mindtrip Founder and CEO Andy Moss. That then informs what the AI suggests to the traveler.

Informed suggestions can save users time in narrowing down destinations and experiences, as well as  introduce places users may never have discovered on their own.

AI travel planning is here: How to use it to plan your next vacation and what you should know first

Can AI fully replace humans?

No. Layla may sound human, using conversational phrases like “I've got three cozy nests that won't make your wallet cry.”

“She has a personality. We try to make her funny and so on, where it's really that friend that can get to know you and then recommend you the perfect stuff,” Saeed said.

But part of Layla’s expertise comes from the real-life experiences of some 1,600 travel content creators  the Berlin-based platform has partnered with. Their videos and insights can give users a richer picture of what to expect.

Mindtrip also leans on human expertise, having tapped a limited group of travel influencers for curated content with plans to eventually open it up so anyone can share their travel itineraries and experiences with the public.

Story continues below.

Is AI a threat to privacy?

With all the rapid advancements in AI in just the past year, some users are wary of its safety .

“Data privacy is definitely one of our biggest concerns, and we ensure that none of the personal identifiable information ever reaches basically the model providers. That will all stay with us,” Layla’s Saeed said. “None of their personally identifiable data can ever be basically used to profile them or basically go into any of these systems, which are training these different models.”

Booz Allen Hamilton, the nation’s largest provider of AI to the federal government , focuses heavily on ethical and  secure AI, as well as adhering to the government’s policies on data collection.

“We collect as little information as we can in order to provide a secure transaction,” said Booz Allen Hamilton Senior Vice President Will Healy, who heads up their recreation work, including Recreaton.gov , the government’s central travel planning site for public lands like national parks. “We don't save your searches. We don't save your credit card data. We're very careful about the data that we store.”

Yoon Kim, an assistant professor in MIT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory , isn’t too worried about security in the initial brainstorming stages of travel planning with AI.

“I don't see, at this point, how AI-generated advice is spiritually different from travel guide articles that you might read on certain websites,” he said. “Travel planning is one really nice use case of these models, as narrow as it is, because it's a scenario in which you want to be given ideas but you don't actually need to commit to them.”

What’s next for AI?

Things could be different, though, if AI is used beyond trip planning. Deloitte sees AI being woven into all parts of travel.

“There is an opportunity for a real engine – I'm going to just use a generic term, engine – that allows you to search and pull it all together and to sort based off of your personal reasons for prioritization and then not stopping at ‘hey give me a list’ or ‘here's what to do,’ but ‘OK, now go create my itinerary, help me book it, track it all the way through that travel process,” said Matt Soderberg, principal, U.S. airlines leader for Deloitte.

Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report, released in early April, identifies seven stages where AI can intersect with a trip, from personalized recommendations based on past travel, online purchases and tendencies to day-of issues to a post-travel pulse, where travelers may be asked about their experience and start thinking about future trips.

“When you solve across all of those, that's going to be the Holy Grail,” Soderberg said. “The difficulty is that doesn't all sit in one place. And so how do you get the right information and the right data to bring all of that together for a single experience for the consumer? And who's going to own that?”

Layla and Mindtrip, among others, already offer booking through partners like Booking.com. “It's all about making things actionable,” Moss said.

But for now, if issues come up mid-trip, AI tools can’t fix them like humans can. Humans still have to get involved.
