Your guide to Jacksonville

Because this city is so large, it's not very walkable. At least, not outside of a few pockets. The bus system can get you around the main city, but most visitors agree it's best to have your own car. In a pinch, taxis and rideshare services can do the job.

Subtropical Jacksonville gets wet, stormy and very, very hot throughout the summer. Come in July and you can expect your average temperature highs in the 90s°F to come with a hearty side order of thunderstorms and sudden downpours. Choose spring and fall instead for more moderate temperatures and much less rain. And, at these times of year, there will be fewer other tourists to contend with, too.

The heat means you can travel pretty light when you come to Jacksonville. No need for heavy coats and woolen sweaters here. You should still pack carefully though, and make sure you bring:

  • Breathable clothes: In humid climates, things get really sticky really fast. Linen and light cotton are good choices; polyester not so much.
  • Comfy shorts: Jacksonville is more laid-back than style-conscious, so bring relaxed clothes that are easy to move around in rather than ultra-fashionable.
  • A swimsuit: Jacksonville is a coastal city with hot weather, so you're going to need to come equipped to take full advantage of this great combo.

Trolley tracks ran down the middle of Main Street, stretching from downtown into Springfield until the 1930s. This Main Street postcard, showing a buggy and streetcar, dates from about 1907. Mischievous boys used to soap the tracks in the vicinity of 8th and Main. These Halloween hijinks caused trolley cars to slip & slide when trying to brake, and their wheels to spin futilely while starting back up. This interesting fact comes from the marvelous video “Yesterdays: Looking Back at Jacksonville.”

Little kids riding alone on streetcars? Also in the “Yesterdays” video, a senior citizen remembered how townsfolk seemed relatively unconcerned about serious crime. During the early 1900s, her parents thought nothing of placing her on a streetcar by herself, even though she was about six years old. The tot would travel downtown to Cohen Brothers Department Store, located in the St. James Building, today’s City Hall. She purchased sewing supplies and then boarded the trolley for the trip back home. Please see below for more!

GETTING THERE FROM HERE — Forty minutes to Ortega Island, and thirty to the Trout River on the Northside: This is how long it took some of Jacksonville’s streetcars to run from the downtown area in 1931, according to that year’s Comprehensive City Plan. Other travel times from downtown included ten minutes to Springfield and twenty-five to the vicinity of today’s FCCJ Kent Campus on the Westside. Is the present JTA bus schedule very much faster, especially considering any transfers from vehicle to vehicle?

The streetcar system did leave a lot to be desired, however, in the opinion of the City Plan from 1931. The document stated that the local residents most affected were African Americans, who relied on trolleys more than white inhabitants did. In the Plan’s words, “As the town grew, its colored areas grew likewise, adjacent to the white areas. As a result, the several separate and distinct colored areas came into being. But now with the advent of business and industry into some of those old areas, the residents there are being forced father and farther from their places of labor to the point in some instances that domestics are required to travel on street cars an hour or more before reaching their destinations… And as the city increases in population and area, this situation will become even more acute… (A)t this time, a domestic residing in the neighborhood of Davis and Eighth Street will consume 40-45 minutes in continuous riding time in going from her home to the site of her day’s work in Avondale, regardless and irrespective of waits and transfers! This state of affairs is not only unfair to the negro element but likewise unfair to those dependent upon them for domestic service. This condition is due to the routings of the transit system with its bottle neck at Broad and Bay and the obsolete system of looping.”

Within a few years of the report, however, the city’s streetcars would lose their battle with buses. Springfield, for example, had its trolley cars replaced by these competitors in June 1934. According to a Jacksonville Journal article from July 6, 1934, the last remaining streetcar lines in the city operated in the areas of La Villa, South Jacksonville, Kings Road, Edison-Fairfield (the Eastside), and Florida Avenue (today’s A. Philip Randolph Boulevard on the Eastside). And in December 1936, Jax streetcars would make their final runs.

Old Town Trolley Tours of St. Augustine will add a trolley stop in front of the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center in February 2024. The move was part of a communitywide effort to embrace St. Augustine's Black history. | Old Town Trolley Tours of St. Augustine

New trolley stop called a ‘game changer’ for Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center

One of St. Augustine’s cultural heartbeats may soon receive an infusion of foot traffic when Old Town Trolley Tours and Attractions St. Augustine adds the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center to its tour route.

Museum and company officials expect the tour stop to begin by the end of this month.

“It will be a game changer for the museum because it will bring more people to our front door than we’ve had access to before,” said Regina Gayle Phillips, executive director of the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center. “The trolleys bring hundreds of thousands of people throughout our city every year. A percentage of those people, I’m sure, will get off on the Lincolnville stop and come to the Lincolnville Museum to see what we have here.”

trolley tours jacksonville fl

Dave Chatterton, general manager of Old Town Trolley Tours and Attractions, said the company, museum and city of St. Augustine have worked to make the museum its 22 nd stop in and around downtown St. Augustine.

Last May, the city of St. Augustine approved a resolution that would allow Old Town to expand into Lincolnville so the city could “recognize and promote historic diversity” as well as help the museum attract additional visitors.

The resolution called for:

  • The city of St. Augustine constructing a loading zone on the western side of Martin Luther King Avenue.
  • Building a stop next to the museum.
  • Requiring that tour drivers not narrate while traveling down Martin Luther King Avenue, Lovett Street and Riberia Street — all heavily residential streets.

“Typically, we avoid residential neighborhoods,” Chatterton said. “Honestly, if it wasn’t for the residents saying that they wanted the trolleys there, this would never have happened. A lot of people involved are residents, city staff, our City Commission for approving the stop.”

After Minneapolis Police officers killed George Floyd in May 2020, a series of demonstrations were held in downtown St. Augustine that summer in an attempt to encourage equity in America’s oldest city.

Not only did those demonstrations lead to the removal from public property of an obelisk celebrating Confederate soldiers, but a discussion about how St. Augustine could better celebrate its Black history.

Since then, the museum, the city, the company and others have ironed out the logistics of the trolley route.

trolley tours jacksonville fl

Phillips said the Lincolnville Museum made an effort this year to focus on celebrating Black history throughout the year, instead of concentrating events in February. Kicking off the trolley route during Black History Month was an added bonus.

“Not just (will trolley riders) get to see the Lincolnville Museum, but all these other historic, African-American sites within in the Lincolnville community,” Phillips said. “The historic churches, the ACCORD Freedom Trail. There is an array of things that they would see that they wouldn’t on the other parts of the route. Even if they stay on the trolley, they will hear some of the history that we’ve helped to write.”

Since the demonstrations in 2020, there has been a collective commitment from St. Augustine and St. Johns County’s government, business and historical leaders to bring the Florida Museum of Black History to St. Augustine in conjunction with a January 2024 restoration announcement at Fort Mose State Park .

Last year, former St. Augustine City Manager John Regan said the work of then-Public Works Director Reuben Franklin allowed the trolley stop to move forward. Regan, who has since retired, said the city worked with the Lincolnville Neighborhood Association for route concepts.

“There has always been a commitment to help the Lincolnville Cultural Museum find some type of level playing field in the tourism industry by having a trolley stop,” Regan told the City Commission. “Call that equity with regard to access by tourists.”

At that time, Regan mentioned that the NAACP recently issued a Florida travel advisory for Black residents because of its belief that Black life was devalued.

“Its very important that in order for this to be successful, we have to implement certain things that help the quality of life. Whether the trolleys stay going into Lincolnville or not, they are good improvements for the neighborhoods as a whole.”

Wow this is great! Where have I been? I just realized the other day that the Riverside trolley's route and hours are both extended! It now runs from 4:30am till 7pm AND the route now extends all the way to FSCJ Kent Campus. That's awesome! No more racing to leave for an early (earlier than I normally eat) lunch. I took the trolley yesterday. The longest I had to wait between trolleys was 10 minutes. It is more expensive with the longer route and longer hours. $1 per each ride and they are cash only and don't take change. So, if you have any stops in between, make sure you have enough singles for each time you get back on.

Hi, Julie: Glad you enjoyed the ride! FYI, the fare boxes do accept change, but the trolley drivers can't MAKE change. Check us out on facebook.com/RiversideTrolley for the latest news and special promotions. --Very trolley yours

Similar to the "trolley" buses they have in Tampa. Our trolleys are just fancy looking buses. What we traditionally think of as trolleys are called Street Cars or Cable Cars. Yes, very confusing, indeed. (I'm going to be a lazy butt today and copy and paste from Yelp Talk. =P) Several months ago, I rode the Riverside Trolley. It took me from the Landing to 5 Points. Yes, the wait and the ride combined took about 15-20 minutes off of my lunch (each way) but hey, I got to experience that Annie roll in Sake House of 5 points. It was nice to take a break from driving and let someone else do the deed for just 50 cents each way. If you work, live, or just hang out in the downtown area, you might want to check it out. The trolley will save wear and tear on those shoes and for only $1 round trip, you can hang out across the river. Most of these are weekdays only. I really like this idea. Now if they had the trolleys make scheduled stops at the skyways, even better. And get a trolley route from The Landing to San Marco. FTW! Here's a map of the route: http://www.jtafla.com/Graphics/Schedules/Trolley/Riverside/rs%20trolley%20route%20map.jpg
