Who Is This Trip For?

The Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim is a significant open water swim and conditions during the race may be challenging. A good experience of swimming in all sea conditions is essential and you should have relevant open water knowledge to be confident if such conditions do arise. Please be aware that this race also involves a mass start, but due to the large number of participants, it is possible to take your time and wait for a quieter period to enter the water.

This trip is only available to be booked through SwimTrek as a complete package (including accommodation). If you choose not to join as a swimmer, there is the opportunity to join as a supporter. There are a limited number of supporters tickets available which include shared accommodation with a race participant and all SwimTrek transfers.

NOTE : Turkish passport holders are unable to register for this event through SwimTrek and must apply via the Turkish Olympic Committee directly.

Daily Itineraries

Please note that the above itinerary is subject to change during the course of your trip.

Trip Schedule

Start Point: Istanbul, Turkey

Start Time: 14:00 2024 on Day 1

Finish Point: Istanbul, Turkey

Finish Time: 13:00 2024 on Day 3

After checking in to your hotel, you’ll join our transfer down to the Bosphorus for our Dinner Cruise. Whilst the light is good we head upstream for a Race Course Familiarisation, learning the importance of which route to follow during the swim. You will then have the chance to meet up with your SwimTrek guides and fellow swimmers for a drink, dinner and informal catch-up to kick off your trip.

To avoid long waiting times at race registration tomorrow, we would highly recommend taking advantage of Early Race Registration and registering today, for those arriving early and who have free time.

In the morning we head to the race village to complete local registration. Please note that the race registration is compulsory . Failure to attend this will mean you will be unable to enter the swim. During race registration, all competitors will be given their swim hats, badges and timing chips in preparation for the swim. Jewellery and watches, of any kind, are also strictly prohibited during the race.

In the afternoon, you will have the time to relax in preparation for the following day's race or take this opportunity to book an optional sightseeing tour of Istanbul.

Day 3 - Race Day

After an early breakfast and check-out from our hotels, it’s time for the main event! At 08:00, all swimmers meet at Kurucesme Cemil Topuzlu Park ready to board the ferries that take us north to the race start point. The race starts at around 10:00 and we swim down the 6½km course, taking in the sights of the city of Istanbul while having the swim of a lifetime!

The race and awards ceremony is expected to be over by 13:00, giving us time to catch an evening flight or stay on to enjoy the hospitality of Istanbul.

Location Summary

Istanbul is a city of contrasts with an enchanting blend of Eastern and Western culture giving this vibrant and modern city a truly unique identity.

As Byzantium, Constantinople and finally, Istanbul, it has been the capital of three empires, each leaving their mark in the form of stunning palaces, castles, mosques, churches and monuments. Set in a beautiful location surrounded by the waters of the narrow strait of the Bosphorus and the serene sea of Marmara, Istanbul is uniquely European and authentically Asian at the same time.

The Bosphorus is a 30 km strait which divides Istanbul and joins the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea. The width of the strait varies from 500 m - 3 km and its depth from 50 - 120 m. As one of the busiest waterways in the world, the Bosphorus sees hundreds of passenger and commercial vessels travel across and along it every day.

The name Bosphorus comes from Greek legend: Zeus had an affair with a beautiful woman named lo. When Hera, his wife, discovered his infidelity, she turned Io into a cow and created a horsefly to sting her. Io jumped clear across the strait. Thus, ‘bous’ (cow) + ‘poros’ (crossing-place) = Bosphorus (Crossing place of the cow).

Special Booking Terms

A 40% deposit is required for this event. We can only guarantee your place upon successful registration with the organising body. The required documents will be emailed to you when you have secured a place in the swim. The deposit payment will be refunded back to you if you are unsuccessful.

Bosphorus Ballot

Competition for places on this iconic swim is stronger than ever, so as done in previous years, a ballot system will be running to give as many people as possible a fair opportunity to secure a spot. The best way to secure one of the limited number of places in this heavily oversubscribed international event is to enter the SwimTrek Bosphorus Ballot. The Bosphorus ballot is a system whereby all swimmers who book to take part in the Bosphorus event, via SwimTrek, will be placed into a draw for a chance to be allocated one of the limited available places in the race.

Please note that entering the ballot does not guarantee your place in the Bosphorus swim.

How Does It Work?

To enter the ballot, make a booking on one of the available Bosphorus packages for all guests that would like to take part in the swim event.

Once you’ve made your booking, you must complete the required profile information in your SwimTrek account within 48 hours. Without this information, we will be unable to enter you into the ballot and your booking may be cancelled . To complete the required profile information, log in to your SwimTrek account and fill out the ‘Personal Details, ‘Travel Details’ and ‘Health Details’ and ‘My Contact Details’ sections for all swimmers on your booking. Please ensure the full name matches the name on your passport. If you need help to complete the required profile information, please contact the SwimTrek office.

The ballot will close on 28 December 23:59 (GMT).

All guests who enter SwimTrek's Bosphorus ballot will be notified about whether they have been successful in obtaining a place in the Bosphorus event between 09 January and 31 March .

Once we’ve let you know that you’ve been successful in the ballot, we will send you your official race application form via email. You’ll then need to complete the paperwork (including the swim coach sign off and your declaration from a medical practitioner) and send this back to SwimTrek within six weeks. Please read the 'Important Information' section below for more details before entering.

Once you return your application form to us, we’ll check to make sure that it has been completed correctly. We’ll then send you an email to confirm that we have received your application and it will be submitted for the event, so that you can begin making plans for your trip to Turkey.

Required Profile Information

Once you’ve made your booking, you must complete the required profile information in your SwimTrek account within 48 hours. Without this information, we will be unable to enter you into the ballot and your booking may be cancelled .

To complete the required profile information, log in to your SwimTrek account and fill out the ‘Personal Details’, ‘Travel Details’ and ‘Health Details’ sections for all swimmers on the booking (required information will be highlighted in red). If you need help to complete the required profile information, please contact the SwimTrek office.

IMPORTANT : Please note that the first name and surname on your SwimTrek account must match those in your passport in order to take part in the Bosphorus event. If these names do not match, you may not be able to complete the official race registration in Istanbul prior to the event.

Race Application Form and Medical Sign-Off

If you are successful in the Bosphorus ballot, we will send you your official race application form which you’ll need to complete and send back to us within six weeks, otherwise we will not be able to confirm your entry into the event and your deposit may be forfeit.

As part of your application form, you will need to have a medical examination by a certified medical practitioner.

Please Note: There will likely be a fee for doctor sign off and this may need to be done privately, as not all medical practitioners are able to sign off a declaration. It is your responsibility to book and pay for your medical appointment with sufficient time to complete your form and return it to us before the agreed deadline.

The following forms and other documents will need to be returned to SwimTrek:

  • 1 x signed official race medical form (signed by a medical practitioner)
  • 1 x signed official race ‘Fit for participation’ form (signed by a certified swim coach)
  • 1 x passport style photo taken within the last six months
  • 1 x copy of the photo page of your passport (with at least six months validity)
  • 1 x copy of your swimming coach’s qualification certificate

IMPORTANT : A qualified swim coach will be required to sign off your registration form in order to confirm that you are ‘Fit for participation’ in the Bosphorus swim. A copy of this coach’s qualification (e.g. certificate from national governing body) will also need to be submitted with your official paperwork in order to register for the event. If you do not have a swim coach, it is your responsibility to enquire with local pools or swimming clubs in order to find a suitable person to assist with this process.

NOTE : All of the above information is required by the Turkish Olympic Committee and no exceptions can be made.

If I’m successful in the ballot, does that mean that my place in the event is guaranteed?

Almost. Once we’ve let you know that you’ve been successful in the ballot you still need to complete the steps set out in the 'How Does It Work?' section above. If we do not receive the paperwork in good time the race organiser will cancel your entry.

Unfortunately, once you have been notified that you’ve been successful in the ballot, your place in the event is non-transferrable and your deposit is non-refundable. For further information about our refund policy, please refer to our Terms and Conditions .

What if I’m travelling as part of a group?

While every effort will be made to secure places in the event for all members of your group, we cannot guarantee that this will be possible.

If a member of your group is not successful in the ballot their deposit will be refunded within seven working days of notification. Trip Grading

Bosphorus cross-continental swim.

The world’s most concentrated shipping lane is closed to all traffic as we participate in this annual race. You can either race to win it or just go along at your own pace. We have given this trip a ‘Moderate’ grading. Most swimmers comfortable in the open water will be able to take part and enjoy one of these trips.

Group Size and Boat Support

The Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim is a mass start event. Boat support on this trip includes a flotilla of small boats arranged by the event organiser. Please note that this boat support is subject to change without notice and cannot be guaranteed.

Swimming Conditions

An interesting feature of the Bosphorus strait is its curious water flow. On the surface, the Bosphorus usually flows from the Black Sea towards the Sea of Marmara (carrying our Bosphorus swimmers along with it). However, at greater depths, the current flows in the opposite direction, carrying huge volumes of water back towards the Black Sea. You should note that conditions in this large body of water may become more challenging. This race involves a mass start, despite the large number of participants it is possible to take your time and wait for a quieter period to enter the water.

Swimming in the sea is a fantastic experience, however you should be aware that certain marine life such as sea lice, jellyfish and sea urchins could be present during the swim. If you suffer from anaphylaxis, please consult the office prior to booking.

Race Distance

Race time limit.

There is a time limit of two hours to complete the course. The Turkish Coast Guard will remove swimmers from the water if they do not finish the crossing within this time.

Temperatures

*Please note that these temperatures are indicative and should be used as a guide only.

Weather Caveat

For safety reasons, the event organisers rely on decent weather conditions in order to carry out the swim. In the event of bad weather and the swim being cancelled, there are no reserve/alternative times or days available.

Race Event Information

Race organisers.

Please be aware that whilst SwimTrek organise the tour part of your package, the Turkish Olympic Committee are the event organisers and are fully responsible for the entry procedures as well as race safety decisions and logistics.

These activities are booked and paid for directly with our Turkey partners Wilusa Tur and do not form part of your SwimTrek contract.

Supporters Package

There are a limited number of supporter’s packages available which include shared accommodation with a race participant. Please note that, on the day of the event, supporters will be at the finish line and will not be able to see the start of the race live, however, several big screens at the finish point will broadcast the race start for supporters to see.

Race Equipment

Swimmers are not allowed to wear wetsuits during the crossing. Participants are not permitted to wear smart watches or smart bands during the race. Compulsory swim hats will be given out on the day of the race by the event organisers.

NOTE : Due to the nature of the event and the mild water temperature, wetsuits are not allowed. Jewellery and watches, of any kind, are also strictly prohibited during the race. At registration you will receive an official Swim Cap which must be worn during the Swim along with the timing chip ankle band.

Getting There

Istanbul is a popular travel destination and there are a wide range of scheduled flights operating to the city’s two main airports, Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, from all around the world.

As SwimTrekkers come from all over the world, and join our swimming holidays in numerous destinations, we don't currently offer flights as part of our SwimTrek packages. We do however want to do as much as we can to ensure that our guests get the best deals when travelling to one of our trips so check out SwimTrek's tips to help you get the best deals for your flights page on the website.

Flights to Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) Airport

Istanbul’s new airport, ‘Istanbul Airport’ replaced Istanbul Atatürk Airport as the city’s International Airport. Istanbul Airport is located north of the now permanently closed Atatürk Airport, on the European side.

Shared & Private Transfer from Istanbul Airport to Hotel

If you would like to book a private transfer from Istanbul Airport to your hotel, or to check availability of shared transfers, this can be arranged via our partners in Turkey on [email protected]

Taxi from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Hotel

Taxis are readily available from both Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Istanbul city centre for approximately €50 (600TRY - 1000TRY).

Public Transport from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Hotel

The cheapest way to get from both airports into the centre of Istanbul is by using public transport, although this can be a more complicated option.

From Istanbul Airport, central Istanbul is reachable by public transport through IETT buses or HAVAIST shuttles.

The city also has a well-renowned metro and tram system. The new metro line (M11) runs regularly from Istanbul Airport to Levent in central Istanbul, and provides much shorter journey times. In just 30 minutes, it brings you to Gayrettepe, the last stop on the line, which is just a few hundred metres from the Point Hotel or Divan City Hotel. For more information please visit Instanbul Airport Metro .

SwimTrek Transfers

SwimTrek will provide transfers between your accommodation and the race village for registration and the boat tour, as well as to and from the race meeting point on Race Day.

Pre/Post Trip Accommodation and Trip Extension Options

If you would like to extend your stay in Istanbul and need to book additional nights’ accommodation before or after your trip, contact our partners in Turkey on [email protected] or get in touch with the hotels directly using the links above. Please note that when booking extra nights, it may not be possible to reserve the same room and you may be required to check out and check in to a different room before or after your SwimTrek trip.

Food and Drink

Breakfast is included in your package. Lunch and evening meals are at your own expense, which gives you a fantastic opportunity to explore and experience your choice of Istanbul’s street food, cafes and restaurants. On race day there is ‘fast food’ available in the Race Village at Kurucesme Cemil Topuzlu Park. Be prepared for the restaurants and cafes close to the park to be busy before and after the event.

For more information, please visit our Food and Drink page on the website

SwimTrek is conscious of the importance of protecting the world’s natural wonders. We are acutely aware of our responsibility to not only take care of the natural environments which we are lucky enough to explore, but also to educate our guests about the importance of conservation efforts and responsible tourism. Culture and customs.

Turkey has a strong national identity and both its location and the legacy of the Ottoman Empire have contributed to a cultural mix of influences from  Europe ,  Asia  and the  Middle East . Cultural practices vary significantly depending on which region of Turkey you are travelling in. It's important to remember that while most Turkish cities are modern metropolises, Turks can still be quite traditional.

Travelers will find Turkish people to be polite and quite formal in their greetings, kind and hospitable as hosts and friendly as new acquaintances. While bars and nightclubs are common in big cities like Istanbul, outside of these environments it’s a good idea to take your cues from the locals and behave in a subdued manner. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, but raucous behavior should be contained to the appropriate venues and kept off the street.

While Turkey is nominally secular, the vast majority of the population identifies as Muslim and Islamic holidays like Ramazan (Ramadan) and Eid are widely observed and recognized as public holidays.

How to be a respectful traveler in Turkey

  • Clean your plate If you’re eating with locals (particularly as a guest in their home), you’ll make them very happy if you eat multiple servings and finish everything on your plate. Plan ahead and arrive on an empty stomach for extra points.
  • Know when to haggle Remember the first rule of bartering is to decide how much you’re willing to spend beforehand and use that as your guide. In regular shops – as opposed to markets – don’t attempt to haggle over prices.
  • Respect the elderly Small gestures like letting elderly folks go ahead of you through doors, offering them your seat on public transport and generally being considerate and respectful of older people will be greatly appreciated.
  • Keep criticism private It’s a good rule of thumb not to criticize the culture, government or politics of Turkey. While not all Turks are strict nationalists, you could cause a lot of trouble and offense. You should especially avoid discussing topics related to the Kurdish or Armenian people. When in doubt, follow the conversational lead of the locals. If you’re traveling with Intrepid, ask your leader for guidance. If you’re after a little insight into the geopolitical complexities of Turkey, check out the 'further reading' list below for some perspectives from Turkish authors.

History and government

Ancient history.

There is evidence of hominin habitation in the region known as Anatolia, or Asian Turkey, that dates as far back as 500,000 years and ample evidence of numerous Neolithic settlements popping up between 8000 and 10,000 years ago.

Notable civilizations who occupied the prehistoric Anatolian region were the Hattians (circa 2500 BC to 2000 BC), the Hittites (circa 1700 BC to 1200 BC) and the Assyrians. From around 2000 BC, Greeks began settling in north-western Anatolia and the southern coasts, establishing individual city-states.

Pre-modern history

The majority of Anatolia was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. After his death, a succession of various Greek-Macedonian rulers controlled the area until 133 BC when the region was given to the Roman Republic.

Roman control had little impact on the dominant classical Greek culture, which continued to thrive in Anatolia until the region’s absorption into the Byzantine Empire.

Between the sixth and 11th centuries a massive wave of what is known as the ‘Turkic migration’ occurred, and millions traveled across Central Asia into Europe and the Middle East . Among this migratory wave were various Turkic tribes who brought the Islamic religion and Turkic languages that dominate modern Turkey.

The Byzantine Empire sustained a number of invasions and limped forward before finally collapsing in the 14th century, by which point much of Anatolia was already controlled by tribal micro-kingdoms. One of these Turkic tribal groups, the Ottomans, emerged as the dominant regional power during the 15th century and enjoyed a few hundred years of expansion and growth until territorial losses forced its eventual decline in the 19th century.

20th century

The final dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after defeat at the hands of the Allies in WWI was followed by a brief period of Allied occupation before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became the republic’s first president and introduced radical reforms to modernize Turkey and imbue it with a unique identity that was separate from that of the former empire. His ideas continue to be influential in contemporary politics today.

In the decades since the death of Ataturk in 1938, Turkey has seen a number of swings between democratic and autocratic governance, interrupted by brief periods of military governance and occasional political chaos.

Turkey today is a presidential republic where the ruling political parties have historically been nationalist and somewhat economically liberal, with a varying amount of Islamic influence.

Far-left political activist groups and minority rebel groups have waxed and waned in terms of public and political influence. The most notable is the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a militant political group originally formed with the intention of creating a Kurdish separatist state. The arrest of PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan in 1999 was a crushing blow to the once-powerful group, though they continue to operate with the stated aim of ensuring the rights and autonomy of the Kurdish people in Turkey and beyond.

More recently, Turkey has experienced relative prosperity and political stability, though the economy – based on mineral mining, agriculture, tourism and construction – continues to fluctuate between growth and stasis.

Eating and drinking

Home to some of the tastiest produce you can get your hands on, traditional cooking methods and influence from Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Turkey’s food is surprising, delicious and delightful (pun definitely intended).

Plant-based options

Many Turkish favorites are already non-meat. Gozleme, simit and cig kofte are all vegetarian and easy to find in markets, street corner food stands and restaurants. Vegans will have a trickier time finding pre-made dishes that contain no animal products. However, Turkey has an abundance of markets selling fresh produce, bread and extras like hummus and fava bean dip. With a little planning, vegans will be able to assemble meze-style lunches when pre-made options aren’t available.

In dishes like soups and stews it’s a good idea to watch out for beef stock – called et suyu – as it is used frequently even in ‘vegetarian’ dishes.

Must-try Turkish dishes and beverages

  • Gozleme This spinach and cheese pastry is a tasty budget-friendly bite that will satisfy everyone (especially vegetarians).
  • Lokum Love it or hate it, this divisive treat (known internationally as Turkish delight) can be found in shops, bazaars and street stalls nearly everywhere in Turkey. Made from rosewater, lemon, sugar, cornflour and water, it's relatively easy to make… and even easier to eat.
  • Simit As far as quick and easy snacks go it’s hard to pass up simit, a bread similar to a sesame-encrusted bagel. Carts selling simit can be found at bus and train stations, main streets and other busy thoroughfares in most cities.
  • Cig kofte Made with bulgur, onion, tomato paste and spices, this south-eastern specialty is essentially a big ol’ vegetarian ‘meatball’. The traditional kind (made with raw meat) is now banned, so you can eat without fear of food poisoning.
  • Fish sandwiches Particularly if you’re spending time in the Bosphorus, a fish sandwich (or balik ekmek) is a must-try local dish. Made with white fish, onion and salad, it’s a simple classic that hits the spot.
  • Manti Though the ingredients that fill these handmade dumplings vary, the best kind are filled with lamb and served with yogurt and butter. It’s hard to move after polishing off a plate, but so worth it.
  • Turkish coffee Turkish coffee is known around the world for its unique brewing method. It's made with arabica beans which are ground into a fine powder and boiled with cardamom and water in a cevze – a pretty copper or brass pot with a long, thin handle.

Geography and environment

A fairly mountainous country sharing borders with Bulgaria , Greece , Syria, Iraq, Iran , Armenia , Georgia and Azerbaijan , Turkey also has wide stretches of coastline along the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Blessed with large tracts of fertile soil, Turkey is one of the world's biggest agricultural producers, and visitors can expect to see many farms, orchards, plantations and areas of permanent crops occupying certain regions.

Due to its location, Turkey is home to a wide variety of landscapes, from the rocky, forested coastline of the Black Sea region to the fertile plateaus of the Marmara, the white sand beaches of the Aegean and the limestone formations of the Mediterranean. Adding further environmental diversity, the Anatolia highlands (considered the heartland of the country) feature rugged snow-capped peaks and crystalline lakes.

With one of the biggest bazaars in the world, flea markets aplenty and a cutting-edge contemporary fashion scene in the bigger cities, shopping in Turkey is more diverse than you might think.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country, particularly perishable items. Australia and New Zealand, for example, generally have strict quarantine laws.

A note on ceramics

While beautifully decorated tiles and ceramics overflow from Turkey’s market stalls, you should keep in mind that their point of origin can be hard to decipher. In other words, watch out for fakes. The real deal tends to be pretty expensive (but worth it, if you ask us). Of course, if you’re just after something pretty to remind you of your travels, don’t feel too bad about reaching for the inexpensive option.

Things to buy in Turkey

  • Handwoven carpets Turkish carpets are a worldwide phenomenon and represent centuries of artistic tradition woven into a beautiful work of art. Go in with an idea of how much you’re willing to pay and don’t be afraid to bargain a little. Just keep in mind that quality craftsmanship deserves to be rewarded with a fair price. A lot of vendors and stores will give you the carpet in a bag suitable to transport as luggage, or you might consider shipping it back home.
  • Nazar boncuk (evil eye talisman) Want to bring home a little piece of Turkey and ward off evil spirits and intentions at the same time? An evil eye talisman is a perfect thing. You’ll see these little blue ‘eyes’ in every shop and the majority of Turks carry one with them wherever they go.
  • Jewelry Turkey's artisan-made gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are good buys. Bazaars, boutiques, museum gift shops and silversmiths offer a wide range of designs from modern to Ottoman-inspired.
  • Brass and copper You can find an assortment of brass and copper decorative objects for the home in the bazaars of Turkey. Serving platters, pitchers, trays, pots and urns will add some souvenir flair to your kitchen.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular events.

Whether or not you want to travel during Ramazan (Ramadan) will depend on what kind of adventure you’re after. If you love immersing yourself in local culture and religious practices (and don’t mind a little inconvenience) you might just find traveling during this holy month a fascinating and enriching experience. While the days are dedicated to fasting and contemplation, the evenings are full of colorful celebration and, of course, feasting! Plus, there are fewer tourists around to compete with.

Anniversary of the Anzac campaign

Thousands of people head to Gallipoli every year to pay their respects to fallen Australian , New Zealand and Turkish soldiers who died during the bloody Gallipoli campaign of WWI. The moving dawn ceremony is an iconic event that grows in popularity each year, so if you're hoping to head to Gallipoli in April for Anzac Day, plan ahead.

Efes Pilsen One Love Festival

This annual summer music festival held in Istanbul presents two days of rock, pop, folk and electronic entertainment for masses of locals and visitors keen on soaking up some tunes and summer love.

Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Championships

Want to see thousands of oiled-up men wrestle and grapple with each other? Then this is the festival for you! This wrestling championship is held over several days, usually in late June, when Turkey's national sport is celebrated with gusto and fanfare. Apart from the one-on-one wrestling bouts, there’s Romani bands, traditional food and belly dancers providing the perfect sideshow attractions.

Cappadox Festival

Set in the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia, this eco-friendly music festival features artists and musicians performing on solar-powered stages and inside the ancient caves that the region is famous for. Held around June, the festival was originally an annual event but has moved to a biennial timetable.

Turkey travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Turkey?

You may need a visa to enter Turkey depending on where you’re from. Foreign nationals from several countries will need an e-visa that allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including:

  • South Africa

Travelers from many countries – including  New Zealand , the  United Kingdom , Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,  Japan , Norway, Sweden and  Switzerland  – don’t require a visa for stays of less than three months if the trip is for tourism or business purposes.

When is the best time to visit Turkey?

The best time to visit Turkey is typically during the shoulder seasons of March to May or September to October when the temperatures are still warm and there aren't yet large summer crowds.

For the best beach weather, the hottest time of year is June and July, however, this collides with the summer holidays, so it will be busy.

The cooler months are quieter and accommodation (when still open) is cheaper.

If you are planning to travel to the eastern reaches of Turkey during Ramadan/Ramazan, it’s important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours. However, the carnival atmosphere that erupts when the fast breaks in the evening is magical, so travelers who enjoy immersive cultural experiences might prefer to travel during the holy month.

What's the weather like in Turkey?

The weather in Turkey depends on the time of year and region you're visiting. The southern coastlines typically experience a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and wet winters, while the interior regions can experience drastic temperature changes and even snow.

If you're planning on swimming, the water is generally still warm up until the start of November and October is great as it's much quieter.

Weather in Istanbul is fairly temperate, sheltered from severe weather by its proximity to the coastlines.

Is tipping customary in Turkey?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Turkey, a cash tip that equals a small percentage of the total bill is very much appreciated in restaurants.

It's also customary to tip staff while visiting hammams (bathhouses). It's not necessary to tip taxi drivers, although rounding up the fare for convenience is commonplace.

What is the internet access like in Turkey?

Free wi-fi is common in Turkey’s cities, but the quality of connection varies. Alternatively, Turkey has an abundance of internet cafes in large cities, and most of them serve coffee and snacks so you can refuel while you catch up with folks back home.

Internet access can be spotty or non-existent in rural areas, so it’s best to treat travel in these regions as an opportunity for a digital detox.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Turkey?

Mobile phone coverage is good in Turkey, especially in large cities. Coverage may not be available in more remote areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your mobile carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your mobile.

What are the toilets like in Turkey?

Turkey has a mix of Western-style and squat-style toilets, sometimes with a jug of water for manual flushing. The latter becomes more common the more remote the region, however, there's typically a Western-style toilet in every bathroom.

Toilets are known as WCs (short for water closets) in Turkey.

Many public toilets require a small payment of roughly 2-10 TRY for use, so make sure you carry change when out and about.

You may find the standards of hygiene and sanitation in Turkey are laxer than you are used to so it's a good idea to carry toilet paper and hand sanitiser if you are concerned.

What will it cost for a…?

Turkey's unit of currency is the lira (TRY). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Half-litre of beer = 50-60 TRY
  • Simit (local bread roll) = 10 TRY
  • Casual restaurant meal = 300 TRY
  • Mid-range restaurant meal = 600 TRY
  • Basic hammam visit = 1000 + TRY/50 EURO

Can I drink the water in Turkey?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Turkey. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water or carry water purification tablets with you. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Turkey?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in tourist shopping areas and large hotels in Turkey, but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors, in remote towns and rural areas. We recommend carrying cash for purchases to avoid being caught out.

What is ATM access like in Turkey?

ATMs are available in large cities in Turkey but are not common in rural areas and smaller towns. Be prepared for this by having enough cash before traveling out of the city.

What to wear in Turkey

Turkey can get quite warm in summer and during the shoulder seasons but it’s important to remember that clothing that covers you from elbows to below the knee is appropriate in (or even around) mosques. Think linen pants, lightweight tops/shirts and long dresses. Female travelers should also carry a scarf on them to wear when visiting mosques.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What public holidays are celebrated in Turkey?

  • 1 January New Year's Day
  • 23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Day
  • 1 May Labour Day
  • 19 May Youth & Sports Day
  • 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day
  • 30 August Victory Day
  • 29 October Republic Day

View a full list of public holidays in Turkey .

The 30-day Islamic holy month of Ramazan (Ramadan) is widely observed in Turkey. The exact dates change every year, so it’s important you check when Ramazan will take place in the year you plan to travel. As a general rule, there are five consecutive public holidays observed at the beginning of the month and a few observed at the end.

The level of celebration varies considerably depending on what part of Turkey you are in. The east has a larger Muslim population and therefore a more devoutly observed Ramazan, whereas the southern and western coasts will be less affected.

Kurban (Eid al-Adha)

A four to five-day public holiday is observed during Kurban (Eid al-Adha), though like Ramazan the exact dates of this observation change every year.

Is Turkey safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers should be aware that while Turkey is nominally secular it can also be very conservative. As such, negative attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals are common, particularly outside major cities.

While same-sex relationships and non-normative gender presentation are not against the law in Turkey, LGBTQIA+ people have no legally enshrined protection from discrimination. Legal prohibitions against ‘ offenses against public morality’ can and have been used to persecute LGBTQIA+ folks, though the likelihood of this being used to target travelers is low.

Transgender travelers, in particular, should be aware that trans people in Turkey report being the targets of violence and overt discrimination.

Istanbul and Ankara have established queer scenes, both of which are primarily oriented around cisgender gay men and to a lesser extent cisgender gay women. However, same-sex couples are still unlikely to engage in public displays of affection in these cities.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Turkey accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

While infrastructure is improving, much of Turkey remains difficult to navigate for wheelchair users and people with mobility concerns. Many cities in Turkey have been occupied for thousands of years and their design reflects that, with little regard given to making streets and attractions accessible. Travelers with impaired mobility will find that while tourist locales in Istanbul, such as hotels and mosques, are fitted with ramps and connected by an accessible tram, getting around the rest of the city can be challenging. Rural regions like Cappadocia will be difficult for travelers with mobility impairment to navigate independently.

Squat toilets remain the norm in many parts of Turkey, which can pose problems for travelers with certain disabilities.

Traffic in Turkey can be chaotic, and even when traffic lights and pedestrian crossings exist drivers do not always obey them. Taxis are, for the most part, not wheelchair-friendly.

Travelers who use battery-operated hearing aids should consider bringing a stash of extra batteries, as they can be difficult to locate in Turkey.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Does my trip to Turkey support The Intrepid Foundation?

Istanbul to Mediterranean Gulet Cruise 5 Days Tour

Istanbul to Mediterranean Gulet Cruise 5 Days

I booked a tour to Pamukkale as a way of getting from Selcuk to Fethiye in Turkey being picked up from my hotel and delivered to my next destination. The pick up was prompt, the guide was very knowledgeable on Pamukkale and the Roman ruins, unfortunately as only 2 of us were travelling onto Fethiye we were offered a choice of public bus or private car, we opted for the private car which took us and one other person onto Fethiye from Pamukkale, my only criticism was that the guide did not know anything about where we were to be collected when asked which led to me being concerned for the duration of the trip, I arrived back at the meeting point early as I was worried about being collected for our onward journey, the bus driver was very helpful and we then learned that we were to be collected from the village of Pamukkale rather than the actual site. I would happily use the company again for future tours, it would probably have been helpful to have explained up front when I booked that if numbers were low then alternative arrangements would be made so that it was not a shock.

A great experience, cruising around the beautiful turquoise coast. Swimming in beautiful spots with occasional trip to shore. Crew friendly, boat comfortable and food good. Be prepared to rough it a bit although we'll proportioned the cabins are very hot and also noisy if motor or generator is going Most people sleep some or all of the night on deck.

The crew were outstanding and the food was excellent. However the boat was a tired old heap which needs maintenance which is not carried out due to back to back charters which is greedy and not fair on the crew trying to cope with a boat which broke down several times and we had smell of diesel in bedrooms when motoring making the rooms unusable and the smell of holding tank unbearable in two rear cabins. The good review is due to your staff who work very hard for you.

4 Days Blue Escape from Fethiye to Gocek

The trip offered a beautiful escape to the breathtaking coves around the bay of Fethiye with plenty of opportunities tor swimming. The crew and especially the skipper were super nice and worked hard to make the boat ride safe and enjoyable. The food prepared by the captain’s wife was delicious. The major drawback for me, as a solo traveler, was being placed on a trip as the only solo traveler with one large tour-group of friends traveling together. It mostly felt like being a guest on their private tour and the captain only communicated with them, including scheduling changes. On the last evening a sunset ride was cancelled without warning because as the captain told me “the others don’t want to go anymore.” Overall I felt like a third-party getting a free ride rather than a full-paying customer. (As expected as a woman of color traveling with a group of wealthy white Americans.) There was also little peace and quiet as the group had pretty much nonstop conversations, including in the evenings after I went to bed and tons of convos about planning their upcoming trip to Israel, which was offensive and triggering for me considering I live in Lebanon and have family and friends in Palestine and endured Israei bombings and occupation in Southern Lebanon. (Common sense while traveling in a Muslim country would be to avoid bragging about visiting a country that oppresses a majority Muslim population.) Though that last part is not the company’s fault, it made the trip kind of depressing at times. My recommendation: don’t place solo travelers as the only extra person with a large group of friends and ask people to respect quiet time.

Sail Turkey Tour

Sail Turkey

What an amazing holiday with the most beautiful sights and people. Turkish people are the most welcoming and friendly I've yet to come across while travelling. Our crew were exceptional and we will remain friends. It was too hot (no Aircon on our boat) to sleep in our beds so we slept on deck....all part of the experience, but the mosquitos were an unwelcome byproduct. Make sure to take something for that - and eye masks for that morning sun :) My advice to the Travel company , is advertise the 'party boat' as exactly that...me and my 52 Yr old partner who were originally assigned to that boat would not have enjoyed the experience listening to 20sumthings doing bodyshots all day! Equally the boats should not be travelling in tandem as the loud party boat meant we couldn't hear ourselves talk over dinner some nights. They should be totally seperate experiences with seperate guides! Already planning a visit back next year!!

Sometimes you have to swim to get a turkey

Matt kopec made sure to collect his turkey, even swimming out to retrieve it..

Mark Kopec made sure to get his turkey, including swimming out to retrieve it.

Provided by Ron Kopec

It’s good to be young and wild.

Take Matt Kopec.

“Water turkey,” his father Ron emailed. “When they flop in the water, swim.”

That’s what Matt did in Cache Creek in Johnson County, he swam out to retrieve his tom turkey with a 9.5-inch beard.

“Four jakes were trailing behind [the tom],” Ron emailed. “Regained its true beauty after it dried up.”

Plus, it just makes it a wilder story.

Ron added, “Shortly thereafter my opportunity came about. Great weekend spending time outside with my son.”

This story sums up what I love about the outdoors.

Tour of Turkey: Andresen scores third win in stage 7 sprint finish

DSM rider scores team's fifth win of the race ahead of Dupont and Weemaes

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL)

Just three days on from his first-ever professional victory, Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) scored his third, going long in the sprint on stage 7 of the Tour of Turkey to win in İzmir.

The Dane looked set to lead out star sprinter Fabio Jakobsen , but kept pushing on to the line after launching 200 metres out to hold off Timothy Dupont (Tartoletto-Isorex) and Sacha Weemaes (Bingoal WB) to triumph.

DSM had been among the teams to set up the sprint – another hectic finish – inside the final kilometre, with the Dutch squad joined at the front by Polti-Kometa, Bingoal WB, and Astana Qazaqstan.

However, it looked like it was the Kazakhstani squad who had control on the final run to the line on the flat stage. Davide Ballerini and stage 2 winner Max Kanter led out Mark Cavendish in prime position, though the Manxman looked to suffer a chain problem just as the sprint was launched.

Beside him, Andresen was on his way, leading from the front with Dupont and Weemaes behind him. Jakobsen, however, was caught a little further back, leaving 21-year-old Andresen to keep flying towards the finish line and grab another well-deserved victory.

"That was a lead out. Fabio was behind my wheel. Everything was perfect and according to plan. Then he told me he got a bit squeezed so I had to go for it. I couldn't see anyone in my wheel and just went for my own sprint," Andresen said after the finish.

"I just hoped Fabio was in my slipstream and could come around me at the end. But when you get so close to the finish you just have to secure the win and cross the finish line first.

"This is massive. Three wins in one stage race. And with the team, our momentum is just perfect. We have five wins in seven stages and we're leading GC. It feels like a dream at the moment. GC is our priority. A GC win here will be massive.

"I'll hopefully go for it at the Giro. That race is something else. I don't want to get too cocky and too naive. We'll take it day by day and Fabio is showing great speed and great form. I think we have a really good opportunity with the him."

The stage, a mostly flat 125km run from Çeşme to İzmir, brought no changes to the general classification with another sprint in Istanbul rounding off the race on Sunday. Frank van den Broek (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) leads by four seconds from Merhawi Kudus (Terengganu), while Paul Double (Polti-Kometa) is third at nine seconds.

The green points jersey, meanwhile, passes shoulders from stage 3 winner Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) to stage winner Andresen, who now looks to be the favourite to secure it on Sunday's slightly trickier uphill sprint in Istanbul.

The 59th Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey will see red hot action unfold across eight stages as it visits all the popular holiday spots along the country’s western coast between Antalya and Istanbul.

The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey returns to the calendar again keen to show off the natural wonders of the country to the world and to provide an excellent spectacle for bike racing fans.

This year, just four World Tour teams have turned up in the shape of BORA - hansgrohe, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Astana Qazaqstan Team and Alpecin - Deceuninck so this will open up opportunities for some of the smaller teams to score a big victory in this prestigious race.

With a host of sprint stages along the route it’s no surprise to see some of the world’s best sprinters present including Sam Welsford (BORA - hansgrohe), Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and back after illness the one and only Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

Travelling east to west the first seven stages hug the beautiful coast line hopping from town to town, resort to resort before a long transfer to stage eight in the magical city of Istanbul.

When you are hot you are hot and Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) is on fire taking his third win of the race on stage seven. The plan it seemed was to lead out Fabio Jakobsen but he was just too strong and kept going all the way to the line.

Going into the final stage on the streets of Istanbul the over all lead is still in the hands of another DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider Frank van den Broke. four seconds ahead of Merhawi Kudus.

Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey 2024 stages

The eight stage tour starts with a predominantly flat 135km around the city of Antalya to provide opportunity number one for the big sprinters before starting its journey westwards along the coast line.

Stage two from Kemer to Kas is a much longer 190km and with a couple of lumps near the start and a sizeable climb 60km from the finish it could see a much more attacking race.

Stage three from the popular resort of Fethiye to Marmaris is a very hilly affair but maybe not hilly enough to get rid of the sprinters who could have their day again at the finish.

There are two classified climbs on stage four including a second category ascent after 94km to shake things up so it is likely a much smaller group will make it into Bodrum to contest the finish.

Stage five between Bodrum and Kusadasi is lumpy again but the climbs are smaller so the pendulum again swings in favour of the fast men, although they will be made to work for it, especially over the final peak with 30km left to race.

Stage six is the queen stage with a mountain top finish at Manisa. This 20km climb takes the riders up above 1000m altitude and will be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the general classification.

Stage seven has just one minor lump just before half way before an absolutely pan flat run to the line and then the race ends with stage eight in and around the bustling city of Istanbul.
