  • And, finally the Shake to Undo feature also allows you to recover recently closed Safari tabs on iPhone.

Restore Accidentally Closed Safari Tabs on iPhone

Did you accidentally close all tabs open in Safari on your iPhone? If you did, you’re not alone. Several people, including myself, have encountered this issue at least once. However, it is nothing to worry about as you can easily recover any deleted Safari tab. Read along to learn how to Restore accidentally closed Safari tabs on iPhone.

How To Recover Deleted Safari Tabs on iPhone

Since Safari is the primary web browser for most of us, we have multiple tabs open within the browser. Some of us leave these tabs open as we need to revisit them later. Now, if you accidentally delete or close all of these tabs in Safari, do not panic. Recovering accidentally closed Safari tabs isn’t all that difficult.

Many people accidentally close tabs and you can find several posts regarding this issue on Apple’s Discussion Community page . Therefore, to solve this issue, we’ve put together some of the best troubleshooting methods to help you recover deleted Safari tabs on your iPhone.

1. Restore Accidentally Closed Tabs from Recently Closed Tabs List in Safari

The Safari browser on iPhone has a Recently Closed Tabs list hidden in plain sight within the browser. Not many people are aware of this feature and hence panic when they accidentally close multiple Safari tabs on their iPhones. However, we will help you navigate to the Recently Closed Tabs list and reopen all the tabs you accidentally closed on Safari.

Time needed:  1 minute

Steps to reopen websites from the Recently Closed Tabs list in Safari on iPhone.

Once the tab opens, you can continue browsing. If you want to reopen several tabs that you accidentally closed, you will have to repeat this step multiple times.

2. Restore Deleted Safari Tabs From Safari History

Another simple method to recover accidentally closed tabs is to restore them from History. Like most browsers, Safari also stores your browsing history in the History tab. However, note that if you accidentally closed tabs in the Private Browsing Mode, then they cannot be restored.

This is because Apple does not store browsing history for any activity in the Private Browsing Mode on iPhone. If they did, the Private Browsing Mode wouldn’t be that private. But if you’re on Mac, there’s a workaround that allows you to view Private Mode browsing history .

With that said, here’s how to recover deleted Safari tabs from Safari History on your iPhone.

  • Open the Safari browser on your iPhone.
  • Tap the Bookmarks icon located below the address bar.
  • Here, tap the History tab (clock icon).
  • Next, tap the page you want to reopen.
  • Alternatively, you can also tap and hold and then select the Open in New Tab or Open in New Tab Group option if you do not want to load the link on the current tab.

3. Shake Your iPhone To Undo Changes and Recover Accidentally Closed Tabs in Safari

Have you ever tried the Shake to Undo feature on your iPhone? Chances are, you have used this feature to correct typing errors. However, the Shake to Undo feature offers a lot more and can help you undo several accidental changes, including the ability to restore recently closed tabs in Safari on iPhone.

Apart from reopening accidentally closed tabs, the Shake to Undo feature also works in other apps and services. Here are a few examples of using your iPhone’s Shake to Undo feature.

  • Creating, editing, renaming, or deleting files or folders in the Files app.
  • Creating, editing, or deleting events in the Calendar app.
  • Editing or deleting images or videos in the Photos app.
  • Rearranging apps and widgets on the Home Screen.

We understand that this feature might be helpful you right now. Because a few minutes must’ve passed since you accidentally closed these tabs. Regardless, it might come in handy in the near future. Therefore, here’s how to use the Shake to Undo feature to restore accidentally closed tabs in Safari on iPhone.

  • The moment you accidentally close Safari tabs, quickly shake your iPhone . We suggest using the hammering motion as that is what seems to work for us.
  • The iPhone will display an Undo Close Tab pop-up. Tap the Undo button.
  • The closed tab will be restored and you can continue browsing.

Shake Your iPhone To Undo Changes and Recover Accidentally Closed Tabs in Safari

If the Shake to Undo feature is not working on your iPhone, you might have accidentally disabled it. Here’s how to enable the Shake to Undo feature on iPhone.

  • Open the Settings app and tap the Accessibility option.
  • Select the Touch option located under the Physical and Motor menu.
  • On the next screen, enable the Shake to Undo toggle.

Prevent Accidentally Closing Safari Tabs

Why do you have multiple tabs open in Safari? Mostly, it might be because you visit those sites often and do not want to search for them every single time. However, navigating through hundreds of tabs to revisit a website isn’t very easy. While doing so, you might accidentally close all of the open tabs too.

Therefore, in order to prevent accidentally closing Safari tabs on iPhone, we suggest bookmarking tabs you visit frequently. This will streamline the entire process of navigating websites you visit often and in turn save time. Here’s how to bookmark tabs in Safari on your iPhone.

  • Head to the website you want to bookmark.
  • Now, tap and hold on the Bookmark icon below the address bar.

Bookmark Websites to Prevent Accidentally Closing Safari Tabs

  • On the next screen, you can edit the Name and the Link of the website .
  • If you want to change the location of the Bookmark, tap the option below Location and select the Bookmark Folder of your choice.

Add Bookmark to the correct folder and save the changes

Conclusion

We hope you were able to restore all the accidentally closed Safari tabs on your iPhone. I can completely relate to your pain of losing all the open tabs. It has happened to me in the past too. If you have any other doubts or are aware of other methods that can help restore accidentally deleted tabs in Safari, please let us know in the comments below.

  • Safari tabs can be accidentally closed due to human error, app crashes, or software glitches.
  • You can easily restore closed Safari tabs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac using the Recently Closed Tabs list or History tab.
  • iPhone offers an accessibility feature, Shake to Undo, that can quickly reopen your recently closed tab.

Have you accidentally closed an important tab in Safari? Don’t worry; we all have been there. Safari tabs can be accidentally closed due to several reasons. However, you can quickly restore closed Safari tabs on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac without any hassle. There are three simple ways to do it, and I have explained them below.

How do Safari tabs get closed accidentally on iPhone or iPad?

  • Shake your iPhone or iPad to undo closed Safari tab
  • Reopen recently closed Safari tabs from Tabs Switcher
  • Restore closed Safari tabs from History
  • Use keyboard shortcut
  • Use the New Tab icon
  • Check your Safari history

Safari tabs can be closed accidentally on iPhone and iPad due to a few common reasons:

  • Multitasking gestures : When switching between apps quickly, it’s easy to accidentally swipe away the Safari app or close tabs without realizing it.
  • Accidental taps : Tapping the close button on a tab is a common mistake. You might intend to switch between tabs or close a different tab but end up closing the wrong one.
  • App crashes or freezes : Safari can occasionally crash due to bugs or low memory. When this happens, you might lose all the open tabs during the session.
  • Software Glitches : Sometimes, an unexpected iOS glitch or bug, especially after an update, can cause Safari tabs to disappear.
  • Clearing tabs or data : Clearing Safari browsing data closes your open tabs. Additionally, if someone has recently used Safari on your device, they may close the Tab Group or tabs manually to remove their browsing activity.
  • Wrong browser settings : Safari has settings to automatically close tabs after a certain period to manage the browser clutter and free up space. You may stop this by navigating to Settings → Apps → Safari → Closed Tabs and select Manually .

While researching a topic, I sometimes face accidental tab closures on Safari. So, I use a few tricks to save my tabs. You may also follow these tips to mitigate the problem:

  • Enable iCloud Tabs : You may enable iCloud Tabs to sync your Safari open tabs, Tab Groups, and bookmarks across devices. So, if you close tabs by mistake, you can often recover it from another device. To enable this, access Settings → Your Apple ID → iCloud → Saved to iCloud → Toggle on Safari .
  • Use Reading List : Save important tabs to ensure you don’t lose access to them. Even if you accidentally close the Safari app or delete the tab, you can access it from there. It also lets you read those saved a webpage while offline.
  • Be cautious with gestures : When using Safari on your iPhone, be mindful of your swipes and taps to avoid unintentional tab closures.

How to restore accidentally closed Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad

Multitasking challenges, interface confusion, or the use of accidental gestures—whatever caused you to mistakenly close Safari tabs, these solutions will surely help.

1. Shake your iPhone or iPad to undo accidentally closed Safari tab

Believe me, the iPhone’s Shake to Undo feature is a lifesaver. For the uninitiated, this is an Accessibility feature that allows you to quickly undo or redo certain actions. For example, you can quickly undo or redo typing and restore recently closed Safari tabs.

Accidentally close Safari tab on your iPhone shake your iPhone and select Undo to restore closed safari tab

If you are unable to use this feature for some reason, you may need to enable it manually.

  • Open Settings → Head to  Accessibility .
  • Tap  Touch  under the Physical and Motor section.

Go to Accessibility select Touch and toggle on Shake to Undo on your iPhone or iPad

You can use the Shake to Undo feature to restore one Safari tab. But what if you want to reopen multiple closed Safari tabs?

2. Reopen recently closed Safari tabs from Tabs Switcher

Well, there’s a secret Safari trick that helps you do that. I am sure that even the most experienced Safari users won’t know about the existence of a Recently Closed Tabs list. You can go there and reopen the web pages you closed recently.

  • Open Safari → Tap the Tabs icon at the bottom right corner.
  • Tap and hold the + (plus) icon at the bottom left corner.
  • Doing so will open the list of all the Recently Closed Tabs.

Open Safari select Tabs icon tap and hold the plus icon select the web page you want to reopen

3. Restore closed Safari tabs from History

Another way to retrieve closed tabs in Safari on iPhone is to head to the browsing history and reopen the desired tab. This trick works not only in Safari but on most other iPhone browsers .

  • Open Safari → Tap the  Bookmark  icon below the address bar.
  • Go to the  Personal History  tab (Clock icon 🕘) at the right.

Open Safari Select Bookmark icon Go to Personal History tab select desired day or date and Select Web Page you want to open

  • Alternatively, you can tap and hold the page and select one of the options that appear in the pop-up.

Accessing your Safari browsing history can also help if you are dealing with the disappearing Safari tabs issue on your iPhone.

How to reopen recently closed tabs in Safari for Mac

If you have lost all your Safari tabs while browsing on Mac, you can quickly get them back.

1. Use keyboard shortcut

The easiest way to restore accidentally closed Safari tabs is using the Keyboard Shortcuts. Simply press Command (⌘) + Z to undo closing the last tab. However, if you have performed any other action after the tab is closed, this shortcut will undo that action instead of reopening the tab. In this case, the Shift + Command (⌘) + T shortcut can reopen the most recent closed tab.

Whichever Keyboard shortcut you use, press them repeatedly to reopen multiple recently closed tabs on Safari.

2. Use the New Tab icon

You can use Safari’s New Tab icon to get a list of recently closed tabs. Right-click on the + icon at the top right corner of the window. Then select the tab you want to reopen. It will restore where you opened it first. Thus, you can continue browsing the tabs as organized as before.

Use New Tab icon to restore closed Safari tabs on Mac

However, you have accidentally closed the Safari window; you can’t find this recently closed tabs list. Therefore, move to the next solution.

3. Check your Safari history

Safari records all your browsing activity under the History menu. While a Safari window is open, click History on the menu bar and select Recently Closed. Choose the tab you want to reopen. If your Safari app crashed or was closed accidentally, select Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

Check Safari history to restore closed Safari tabs on Mac

You can choose a method and restore all accidentally closed Safari tabs on Mac based on the number of tabs.

That’s how you restore closed Safari tabs on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. I suggest following the tips I mentioned to avoid losing Safari tabs. Even if you accidentally hit the close (x) button on a Safari tab, use any of the methods shown in this article.

Yes, iCloud stores your Safari tabs if iCloud Sync is enabled for Safari, but they are not included in iCloud backups. When iCloud sync is enabled, your tabs can be accessed on all Apple devices that are signed in with your Apple ID. To preserve Safari tabs, you should use an encrypted computer backup.

Yes, but only if you allowed Safari to use iCloud in the first place. If you have, then all your  Safari Bookmarks , Reading List,  Tab Groups , and open browser tabs are automatically backed up.

iPhones can store Safari history for up to a month.

Quickly get back to where you were

Tom Nelson is an engineer, programmer, network manager, and computer network and systems designer who has written for Other World Computing, and others. Tom is also president of Coyote Moon, Inc., a Macintosh and Windows consulting firm.

What to Know

  • Undo a closed tab: Go to Edit > Undo Close Tab , press Command + Z , or click and hold the plus sign to the right of the Tabs bar.
  • Or, select History > Reopen Last Closed Tab , go to History and mouse over Recently Closed , or press Shift + Command + T .
  • Restore a closed window: Go to History > Reopen Last Closed Window . Or, History > Reopen All Windows From Last Session .

This article explains how to reopen tabs or windows you may have closed by accident in the Safari web browser. You can also use the History list to reopen sites.

How to Undo a Closed Tab in Safari

You can open your lost tab using four methods. The first is to either select Undo Close Tab from the Edit menu, or press Command + Z on your keyboard.

You can restore multiple tabs you've closed by using the command repeatedly.

Another way to reopen a page you've closed is to click and hold the plus sign at the far right of the Tabs bar. Usually, you click this once to open a new tab, but holding opens a menu with a list of ones you've recently closed. Select the one you want to reopen.

The third way is to select Reopen Last Closed Tab under the History menu or press Shift + Command + T on your keyboard.

Finally, you can find a list of tabs you've recently closed under the History menu. Mouse over Recently Closed to see a list of pages you can reopen, and then click the one you want to restore.

Restoring Closed Windows

If you close a Safari window , you can reopen it just as you can reopen a closed tab, but the command is under a different menu. Select Reopen Last Closed Window under the History menu, or press Shift + Command + T on your keyboard.

The Reopen Last Closed Window and Reopen Last Closed Tab commands share the same spot in the History menu and keyboard shortcut. Which you see depends on which you closed most recently.

Reopen Safari Windows From Last Session

Besides being able to reopen closed Safari windows and tabs, you can also open all Safari windows that were open the last time you quit Safari.

Safari, like all the Apple apps, can make use of OS X’s Resume feature , which was introduced with OS X Lion. Resume saves the state of all the open windows of an app, in this case, any Safari window you have open. The idea is that the next time you launch Safari, you can resume right where you left off.

From the History menu, select Reopen All Windows From Last Session .

How to reopen recently closed tabs in Safari for Mac

Safari for Mac makes it simple to reopen any accidentally closed windows or tabs from your last browsing session , but did you know that you can also bring back one or more tabs or windows that you closed during your current session? This tutorial shows you how to do just that.

Reopen closed Safari tabs on Mac

How to reopen closed Safari tabs on Mac

You can view multiple web pages in a single Safari window by opening them in tabs.

Each tab is its own process that consumes CPU time, RAM, and other system resources. Therefore, it makes sense to close any Safari tabs and windows you no longer need in order to cut down on RAM usage, conserve power, and free up CPU cycles for other tasks. But did you close one accidentally or unknowingly and wish to open it again?

Safari for Mac lets you reopen your recently closed tab(s) in three different ways.

1. Use keyboard or menu shortcut

Use the standard undo shortcut  Command + Z to bring back the last closed tab or choose Undo Close Tab from the Edit menu. If you’ve closed multiple tabs in a row, invoke the shortcut repeatedly to reopen closed tabs one by one.

The shortcut won’t execute if you perform another undoable action after closing a tab. In that case, choose the option Reopen Last Closed Tab from Safari’s History menu or press the corresponding keyboard shortcut Shift + Command + T .

undo close tabs safari

Like with the undo action, you can press this shortcut repeatedly to resurrect several tabs in the order you closed them, which is really nice. If you have closed a window instead of a tab, this menu option will read Reopen Last Closed Window .

2. Use the New Tab icon

Safari’s New Tab icon has a secret: not only does it let you create a new tab, but also quickly resurrects your recently closed tab(s). To access the list of recently closed tabs in older Safari versions, click and hold the “+” icon on the rightmost side of Safari’s tab bar.

undo close tabs safari

In newer versions of Safari, this button appears in the toolbar.

New Tab Button Safari Toolbar

Up pops a menu with all of the tabs you’ve closed in this browsing session. Select a webpage you’d like to reopen, then click the mouse or trackpad to bring it back.

I prefer this method over the undo action because it reopens a closed tab right where it was. I try to keep my tab bar organized so this has been really helpful. On the downside, restarting Safari clears the list of recently closed tabs under the New Tab button.

3. Check your Safari history

Lastly, you can reopen a recently closed webpage by choosing the Recently Closed item from Safari’s History menu, then choose the webpage from a sub-menu that you want to reopen. Or, select the Reopen Last Closed Window menu option to quickly bring back the most recently closed Safari window along with all of its tabs.

undo close tabs safari

The list of recently closed webpages in the History menu remains intact when Safari is restarted, unlike that under the New Tab button—even though they’re the same lists. If you just restarted Safari and want to reopen a tab that was closed during a previous browsing session, use the history method.

Don’t forget that you can quickly consolidate and convert all your Safari windows to tabs in a single window by choosing the Merge All Windows action from the Window menu.

How to Restore Closed Tabs in Safari

How to restore recently closed tabs in Safari on Mac

If you think that Safari gets the better of Chrome in the  Safari vs Chrome  battle and take it as your default browser, it's not an odd thing that you close all Safari windows with one mouse click. Take it easy, you can learn 3 methods to reopen the Safari tabs on your computer running  macOS  here.

Method 1: Use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts

Just like you  undo an email on Mac , you can also undo the tab shut actions with certain keyboard shortcuts or the Safari menu shortcuts on the context menu.

You can relaunch Safari on your computer and then press the Command + Z keys to bring back the last closed tab. If you have shut several tabs in one click, you should hold down the keyboard shortcuts repeatedly to restore all the tabs one by one.

Alternatively, you are able to select the Reopen Last Closed Tab option to bring the closed Safari tab back. Let me show you how to do:

  • Launch Safari on your Mac via  Spotlight Search shortcuts .
  • Head to the History menu on the top toolbar of your Mac desktop.
  • Select Reopen Last Closed Tab on the dropdown menu of the History. You can also hit the responding Shift + Command + T keyboards to complete the restoration.
  • Then all the tabs you have closed on Safari will show up automatically.

Use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts

Method 2: Utilize the add icon on Safari

Safari's new tab icon allows you to create a new tab with a left click and restore the closed tab with a right click. You will have the list of all closed tabs and windows that you have closed as long as you right-click this icon.

  • Relaunch the Safari browser on your device.
  • Head to the upper right corner of the Safari main interface.

Utilize the add icon on Safari

  • Choose the tab that you plan to restore and it will come back.

Method 3: Check the Recently Closed option

You are also allowed to recover your closed tab on Safari by checking the Recently Closed menu. Different from the Restore Last Closed Tab option, this way won't show you all the closed tabs and you can choose specific tabs to recover.

  • Launch the Safari browser on your Mac.
  • Locate the History tab on the top menu bar.

Check the Recently Closed option

  • Click the website that you visited and then it will appear on the Safari main window.

If you have known how to restore recently closed tabs in Safari on your Mac with the guideline, why not share it with more people?

How to restore closed tabs in Safari on iPhone

The way to reopen a recently closed Safari tab on your iPhone is pretty much the same as on your Mac. You can click the + icon or search for your Closed Tabs in the Safari history to reopen the closed tabs, though they are not as easily accessible as the Mac.

Method 1: Utilize the add icon on Safari

  • Run the Safari browser on your iPhone, and tap the Show All Tabs icon at the bottom right corner of the iPhone screen.
  • Tap and hold your finger on the + (New Tab) icon for a couple of seconds.

Utilize the add icon on Safari

Method 2: Search for the Closed Tabs in the Safari history

If you fail to restore the Safari tabs, you may need to browse the history and then reopen them manually. Safari saves every website you visit in the browsing history until you browse them in Private mode.

You can easily view your history list or search for particular websites to reopen your closed Safari tabs here:

  • Open Safari and tap the Book icon.
  • Tap the Clock icon to view your browsing history.
  • Search your closed Safari tab or scroll through your history in chronological order.

Additionally, the History menu provides the option to access your entire browsing history, enabling you to search for and reopen tabs from previous days or weeks. This feature is particularly useful when you need to retrieve a tab that was closed earlier in your browsing history, offering a comprehensive solution for managing and restoring closed tabs in Safari.

Accidentally closed all open tabs on iPad safari

I have not been able to find the answer to this question: if you accidentally close the tabs on the iPad in Safari, how do you reopen the recently closed tabs?

This solution does not work. When I did that, it only showed the one window that was open the other window with multiple tabs that somehow got closed was not visible and none of the other items described in. Those pictures were visible on my iPad mini.

This is another very annoying feature that Apple needs to fix. The fact that you can somehow close multiple tabs if you have two windows open and have no way of regaining them. This has happened to me numerous times. And I never did anything like closing any of the windows for it to happen.

If you closed a Safari Window - and all associated tabs - you can reopen a Recently Closed Window for a limited period of time…

Starting from a Home Screen, assuming that Safari is visible in the Dock, touch-and-hold (i.e., long touch) the Safari icon; an Action Menu will appear.

From the menu, select Show All Windows ; you will now see a screen that closely resembles the Task Switcher - but you will only see preview windows for your open Safari Windows. At top-right (iPadOS15) or top-left (iPadOS16/17) you will see the Reopen Closed Window(s) button.

undo close tabs safari

You should note that the Reopen Closed Window(s) button allows you to reopen a window for a limited period of time. If left too long, you may have lost the opportunity to recover the closed window - and with it the tabs and related tab history.

In your Safari window, you need to touch-and-hold the “+” (the one you use to open a new tab); it will offer your list of recently closed tabs.

From prior question regarding restoring lost tabs on my iPad, the answer give was to go “menu”. There is no “menu” in an iPad. How can I restore my tabs to where they used to be please?

Nov 10, 2023 8:10 AM in response to vlfraser7

This is the ONLY thing that actually worked for me. The easiest and quickest way to restore closed tabs on a Mac for any browser is reopen the browser and hold the "shift+command+T" keys. Remember, you need to repeat hitting these keys to restore each tab. So, if you had 50 tabs that you want to restore, you will need to do this 50 times. Hope this helps ☺️

I turned on Stage Manager, and the "Reopen closed window" option never appears. This really is a poor implementation of a feature. I have now inadvertently closed multiple tabs many times, leaving just the one tab I didn’t intend to close. Most annoying Apple.

May 13, 2023 12:50 PM in response to vlfraser7

Are you certain that you closed all your tabs - and have not, perhaps, opened a new Safari Window? Each Safari Window has its own self-contained set of open tabs.

When you open Safari, you may see the Shelf at the bottom of the screen - within which you will see each of your open Safari Windows; simply tap the thumbnail corresponding with the Safari Window (with associated tabs) that you wish to view.

If you closed a Safari Window - and all associated tabs - you can reopen a Recently Closed Window…

From the menu, select Show All Windows ; you will now see a screen that closely resembles the Task Switcher - but you will only see preview windows for your open Safari Windows. At top-right (or top-left for iPadOS16) you will see the Reopen Closed Window(s) button.

If you have accidentally closed all you your open tabs associated with a Safari Window, this User Tip may be helpful in recovering your tabs. While I have not [yet] updated the document to reflect changes in iPadOS15/16 (having been written for an earlier version of iPadOS), much of it is still relevant - as are the outlined strategies:

For anyone using iPadOS 17 you need to turn on stage manager to see the "reopen closed window" button.

This has happened several times before and I was working on something that disappeared without me closing or touching anything. I left it open, returned and poof, gone! History only shows another random page. None of the advice works. I am using an iPad mini without an external keyboard. This NEVER happens on my Windows based devices or Edge, Chrome, or Firefox browsers as my entire history is saved and easily restored.

I believe there are other answers but to re-open closed tabs in safari on iPad, hold the + sign in the top right. You’ll see a drop down of all the recently closed tabs in the window you’re currently using. But if you go to a different window from the one with the closed tabs, it won’t give you the list of closed tabs. I hope I’ve made myself clear. Feel free to send questions in return. Hope this helps.

For MacOS just try with CMD+SHIFT+T.

For iOS and iPadOS try the same by connecting a bluetooth keyboard. Make sure you keep safari opened. Tried and worked on iPadOS 17.3. :)

Troubleshooting, how to restore & reopen all closed tabs in safari on ipad.

Reopen and restore all closed tabs in Safari on iPhone or iPad

If you’ve accidentally closed tons of Safari tabs on iPad or iPhone and want to restore them, or you lost all of your Safari tabs by trying to create a Safari Tab Group (a surprisingly common occurrence, what a feature bug), you are probably desperately wondering how you can recover and reopen all closed tabs in Safari and restore them all to your iPhone or iPad.

Many people use Safari tabs as an alternative to bookmarks, keeping hundreds of tabs open at a time, but forget to bookmark them. Endless hours of research, resources, etc, open in tabs, can all be gone in a flash if you encounter a hiccup with Safari on iPhone or iPad. Oops. Indeed, Safari is unforgiving on the iPad (or iPhone), and your tabs may be toast.

Worried you lost your Safari tabs on iPad? Not so fast!

There’s good news and bad news.

While there’s no official “Reopen all closed tabs” option or ‘Restore previous session’ in Safari on iPadOS or iOS, you’re not out of options.

The bad news is that if you had tons of open tabs, say 300, 400, or 500 open tabs, they might be lost for good, or at least many of them may be gone.

But the good news is you can try to recover many of them through several different options. And if you have a keyboard hooked up to the iPad in particular, you’ll be able to get quite a few of the lost tabs back.

Restoring Closed Safari Tabs on iPad with Keyboard Shortcut

If you have an external keyboard, Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or similar keyboard with the iPad, you can use a keyboard shortcut in Safari to restore the last closed Safari tabs.

  • Hit Command + Shift + T on a keyboard repeatedly, until all tabs have been reopened

I have personally experienced catastrophic tab loss due to the Tab Groups bug, but by using the Command Shift T method I was able to recover about 200 of 500 lost Safari tabs. This is probably the most broadly useful trick, and the closest method to restoring all closed tabs in Safari on iPad.

Unfortunately, this trick is probably not available for iPhone, but you can try connecting a bluetooth keyboard to iPhone and giving it a shot anyway – let us know if it works.

Recovering Closed Tabs in Safari on iPad via New Tab Button

The plus button in Safari on iPad and iPhone is the traditional commonly used method used to recover closed tabs in iOS Safari and iPadOS too.

  • On iPad: Tap and hold on the + plus button, then select the closed tabs you wish to reopen from the drop-down menu
  • On iPhone: Tap the two overlapping squares icon to access tabs view, then tap and hold on the + plus button to select closed tabs you want to reopen

Restore closed tabs in Safari

The + tab drop down menu that shows with a long press will reveal all tabs that have been closed recently, so repeat this process to reopen and recover closed tabs as needed.

Restoring Lost Tabs in Safari on iPad through History

You can also browse through Safari history to restore closed tabs, though if you have tons of tabs you are trying to restore you’ll be in the history menu for a while.

  • Tap the sidebar menu button, then tap on “History”
  • Tap on the history item(s) you want to restore the tab for

This is fairly tedious but it can be very effective if you don’t mind putting the time into restoring from browser history.

Of course if you deleted and cleared the browser history, this won’t be an option.

Restore from a Recent Backup to Recover All Lost Safari Tabs?

If your tabs were super important, perhaps you were doing tons of research and lost them all, and if you had a recent backup made from before you lost the tabs, you can also try to restore the iPad from the backup to recover those lost tabs.

However this usually does not work to recover the tabs if Safari is syncing through iCloud Tabs, so if you’re in that situation you’ll want to use the approaches above rather than the backup recovery approach.

Were you able to restore your lost Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad using these tricks? Which method worked best for you? Do you have another approach to recovering all your closed Safari tabs in iOS and iPadOS? Share with us your experiences in the comments.

This article is aimed at iPad users with a keyboard case or external keyboard attached, however, for Mac; Command+Shift+Tab in Safari for Mac (US English) will reopen the last closed tab. You can see what the equivalent would be on Mac (German) by going to the Safari “History” menu and looking for the “Reopen Last Closed Tab” option to see the associated keystroke. Hope that helps!

Yesterday Tab – How to Reopen Closed Tabs in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox

Abigail Rennemeyer

It happens all the time – you accidentally close a tab you weren't really done with, or you want to visit a site you found yesterday.

So what's the easiest way to reopen those closed tabs and get back to browsing?

In this article, you'll learn how to reopen closed tabs in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox so you don't ever have to panic if you close something by accident.

How to reopen tabs in Chrome

The keyboard shortcut.

There are a couple ways to reopen tabs in Chrome. If you're into keyboard shortcuts, the easiest way is to simply hit Command+Shift+T (on Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+T (on Windows).

If you hit that combo once, it'll bring up the last tab you closed. Hit it again, and it'll bring up the one before that. And so on.

The menu options way

If you're a bigger fan of right-clicking, just right click on the tab menu bar area, and select "Reopen Closed Tab":

Image

If you do that again, it'll open the tab you closed before that, and so on.

How to review your browser history in Chrome

What if you can't remember exactly when you opened that tab you're looking for? Or you can't remember exactly what the site was called?

In that case, you might just want to check out your browsing history – the list of the last x number of sites you've visited/tabs you closed over the past days or weeks.

To do this, open your Chrome browser and click on the three little dots or green arrow in the upper right corner.

Image

That'll bring up the menu you see in the image above. The fourth option is "History" – hover or click on that and another menu will open to the left. This will list the tabs you've recently closed (the last 8-10 or so).

If you want to see your whole browsing history, you can click on the history tab at the top of the leftmost menu that popped up, like below:

Image

And that will open up your browsing history, which will look something like this:

Image

You can see the scroll bar on the right - if you scroll down, it'll just keep loading more history. This lets you see where you've been on the internet.

Want to visit one of those sites? Just click on it and the browser will take you there (in the same window).

Image

And that's it!

How to reopen tabs in Safari

Similarly, in Safari there are a couple ways to reopen tabs you've closed.

The same keyboard shortcut we talked about for Chrome, above, works in Safari as well.

Just hit Command+Shift+T (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+T (Windows) to open those tabs back up. Remember, you can do this multiple times to keep getting more closed tabs, in the order you closed them (from most-least recent).

Again, if you prefer using your mouse and menu bar, here's how it works in Safari:

In the menu bar at the top of your screen (where it has options like "Safari, File, Edit, View, History" and so on), select "History":

Image

This will bring up a few options, as you can see above. I've hovered over "Recently Closed" (the first option) and it shows me my two recently closed tabs. If you use Safari as your browser you will likely see more tabs.

If you see the tab you just closed that you want to open back up, just click on it and it will open in a new tab/window.

You also have the option to "Reopen Last Closed Tab" (which also lists the keyboard shortcut next to it) and "Restore All Windows from Last Session".

How to review your browser history in Safari

If you want to review your whole browser history, just click on that first option under the "History" menu (that says "Show All History", see image above), and your entire history will appear:

Image

Again, if you use Safari for your regular browser, your history will likely be longer :)

If you want to visit one of those sites directly, just double click on the listed URL and it'll take you there in that same window.

How to reopen tabs in Firefox

If you're a Firefox user, the process is fairly similar to what we discussed above.

You can open your recently closed tab(s) in Firefox the same way as in Chrome or Safari – with the Command+Shift+t (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+t (Windows) keyboard shortcut. Easy peasy.

And if you hit those keys again and again, it'll keep opening the tabs you closed in order from most recently closed to least recently closed.

To open your recently closed tabs in Firefox via menu options, just find the icon in the upper right corner that looks like books on a shelf:

Image

When you click that, you'll get a dropdown menu that will have a "History" tab. Click on that, as highlighted in the image above.

This will bring up a new menu which will have a "Recently Closed Tabs" option, like you can see below:

Image

If you click on that, another menu will open with all your recently closed tabs listed.

If you click on one of those tabs shown, Firefox will take you to that tab in a new window.

How to view your browser history in Firefox

Of course if you want to see all the browsing you've done, not just tabs you've recently closed, you can view your whole browser history.

Under that same little books-on-a-shelf looking icon in the upper right, again click on the "History" option. Then you'll see your recent history, as well as an option to see all history:

Image

If you need more than just your recent history (shown there in the dropdown menu) you can click on "Show All History" at the bottom and it'll open up a separate window like this:

Image

If you want to visit any of those pages, just double click on the URL/line and Firefox will take you there in the same window.

Now you can confidently reopen tabs in your browser so you don't lose track of what you were working on or learning.

How to close every tab by pressing the tab switcher button, how to close all safari tabs on the tab switcher screen, how to reopen recently closed tabs, key takeaways.

  • Close all your Safari tabs at once by long-pressing the tab switcher button and selecting "Close All Tabs" in the pop-up menu. Confirm with another tap.
  • Another way to close all tabs is by long-pressing the "Done" button on the tab switcher screen and selecting "Close All Tabs" in the pop-up menu. Confirm again.
  • To reopen recently closed tabs, tap the tab switcher button, long-press the "+" button, and select the desired tab from the "Recently Closed Tabs" list. Stay out of Private Browsing mode. Good luck!

If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and need to clear them out quickly, it can be tedious to "X" them out one at a time. Luckily, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they also work in Private Browsing mode. Here's how.

First, open "Safari" on your iPhone or iPad. While on any page, locate the tab switcher button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

On the iPhone, it's in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there for a moment, preforming a "long press." In the menu that pops up, select "Close All Tabs." (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)

When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap "Close All Tabs" again. After that, all of your browser tabs will close.

There's another way to quickly close all tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. First, open "Safari," then tap the tab switcher button once.

On the tab switcher screen, locate the "Done" button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the screen on the iPad and in the lower-right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long-press the "Done" button — place and hold your finger there for a moment until a pop-up appears. In the pop-up, select "Close All Tabs." The exact name of the pop-up action will vary, depending on the number of tabs you have open.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all the tabs with another pop-up message. Select "Close All Tabs" again. Then all of your Safari tabs will close instantly. The same action works in Private Browsing mode. Pretty handy!

If you accidentally closed all of your tabs and would like to get them back, you can retrieve them one at a time as long as you aren't in Private Browsing mode . Just tap the tab switcher button, then long-press the "+" button until a "Recently Closed Tabs" list appears . From there you can tap on entries in the list to open them again in Safari. Good luck!

5 Ways to Recover Your Safari Tabs After Restarting Your Mac

Why You Should Stop Using AI Art Generators

Here's how to remotely disable your smartphone if it's stolen, the first 7 things i do after getting a samsung galaxy phone.

Safari offers an excellent browsing experience: it is energy efficient, works seamlessly on every Apple device, and is great at protecting your privacy. However, there is one pesky flaw you may have noticed.

Every time you restart your Mac and re-launch Safari, all the windows and tabs from your previous session will disappear. Instead, you'll see the default Safari homepage. This can be annoying if you are like many users who want to pick up right where they left off with their web browsing.

So if you've been wondering how to restart your Mac without losing your Safari tabs, here are some quick fixes you can try.

1. Pin the Tabs in Safari

If you almost always use a certain website, you can pin that tab to your Safari browser. When you pin a tab, or multiple tabs, you don't have to open them manually or worry about losing them each time you close and relaunch your browser.

When you open Safari, pinned tabs appear immediately, ready for you to access them. And even when you open a new Safari window, you never have to worry about losing your tabs. Every tab you've pinned appears the same on every window, so you don't need to worry about having different versions of the same tab on multiple windows.

Pinning a tab is not difficult. Just follow these steps:

  • Start by opening the website you'd like to pin.
  • Then Control-click the tab.
  • A dialog should appear; choose Pin Tab from the options.
  • Repeat this process for as many tabs as you'd like to pin.

Alternatively, you can place your cursor on the tab you'd like to pin and drag it to the left until the tab shrinks to the size of the website's logo.

There appears to be no limit on how many tabs you can pin on Safari at once. We tested up to 25. However, whatever the number you have, you should learn how to manage your pinned tabs in Safari .

2. Customize Safari's Settings

You may not have favorite tabs to pin. And having so many tabs permanently pinned to your Safari windows might be too much clutter for you. However, if you'd prefer to resume right where you left off whenever you open Safari, there's another simple fix in the settings.

To customize Safari's settings:

  • Look to the top-left corner of your screen and click on Safari .
  • In the menu that appears next, click Preferences .
  • A new General window should appear; look for the Safari opens with menu.
  • Click on the corresponding A new window option.
  • From the list of dropdown options, you can select All windows from last session or All non-private windows from last session , depending on whichever you prefer.

Once you've completed these steps, re-launch Safari. Once you open Safari, it should open the tabs from your previous browsing session.

3. Use Safari's New Tab Button

The first two fixes are preventive strategies. If you implement them before restarting your Mac, they can prevent you from losing your tabs once you relaunch Safari. However, you may have restarted your Mac without implementing either strategy. In that case, you still don't have to worry about losing your tabs because you can use Safari's New Tab option as a corrective strategy.

You may think Safari's New Tab icon has only one purpose: to create a new tab. But it can also help you recover your recently closed tabs. Just look at the toolbar and Control-click on the New Tab icon, which looks like a plus (+) . A list of Recently Closed Tabs should appear, so you can select the one you'd like to recover.

4. Use the Undo or Reopen Action

After restarting your Mac and launching Safari, you may decide to close some tabs you no longer need. If they are a lot, you might get carried away with the monotonous task of clicking Close and accidentally closing a tab you still need.

A quick fix that can help you correct that mistake is the Undo menu or keyboard shortcut. Rather than panic when you've closed a tab or fumble with your settings, use the Undo action. It is pretty straightforward. Just follow these two steps.

Look to the top-left corner of your screen and select Edit from the options. A dialog box should appear with a list of options; click Undo Close Tab .

A quicker fix is the keyboard shortcut. To open the last tab you just closed, press this combination of keys: Shift + Cmd + T to reopen your last closed tab.

If you closed more than one tab, repeat the sequence for as many tabs as you'd like to restore. Our Safari shortcuts cheat sheet contains more keyboard shortcuts you can try on your Mac.

5. Reopen Tabs Using Your Safari History

You may have accidentally closed a window, or there may be simply too many tabs to keep pressing the combination of keys we mentioned earlier. Don't sweat it. Launch Safari and do the following. To view your history:

  • Look to the top-left corner of your screen and select History from the options.
  • A dialog box should appear with a list of options for you. You can choose any of these three options: Recently Closed , Recently Last Closed Tab , or Reopen All Windows from Last Session .
  • Click the relevant option to reopen your recently closed tabs, or find the specific tab you're looking for in the Recently Closed dropdown.

Improve Your Browsing Experience on Safari

Losing a tab may be frustrating, but it shouldn't affect your productivity too much. With these quick fixes, you can ensure you never lose a tab on Safari if you restart your Mac. And when you close an important tab by mistake, you can always recover it.

Safari offers a brilliant browsing experience, arguably better than many other browsers, like Chrome. The experience becomes even smoother once you learn some essential Safari tricks and tips and implement them on your Mac.

How to Fix Safari 18 Problems

Liam Anderson

September 18, 2024

red and white pepsi logo

Safari 18 brings new features to Apple’s web browser. But some users face problems after updating. The most common issues include slow loading pages, crashes, and pages not opening at all. These problems can make browsing hard.

Fixing Safari 18 problems is often easy. You can start by clearing your browser cache and cookies. This helps remove old data that might cause issues. If that doesn’t work, try turning off Safari extensions one by one. Sometimes a faulty extension can cause problems.

Updating your device’s software can also help. Apple often releases fixes for Safari in iOS and macOS updates. If nothing else works, you can try resetting Safari settings to their defaults.

Troubleshooting Safari 18 Issues

While Safari 18 introduces exciting new features and performance enhancements, you might encounter some bumps along the way. Don’t worry; let’s navigate through some typical Safari 18 hiccups and their potential solutions.

Common Issues and Fixes

Additional tips.

  • If you encounter persistent problems, consider resetting Safari settings (Settings > Safari > Advanced > Reset Safari). This will clear history, cookies, and other website data.
  • Keep your device’s software up to date, as updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements for Safari.
  • If none of the above solutions work, contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Key Takeaways

  • Clear cache and cookies to fix most Safari 18 issues
  • Check and update device software for the latest fixes
  • Reset Safari settings if other methods don’t work

Troubleshooting Common Safari Issues

Safari 18 can face various problems that affect browsing. These issues range from startup crashes to network problems and in-app glitches. Let’s explore some fixes for these common Safari troubles.

Resolving Startup Crashes and Performance Degradation

If Safari won’t open or keeps crashing try restarting your device. This often fixes many issues. If that doesn’t work clear Safari’s cache and cookies. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This can speed up a slow Safari too.

For ongoing crashes try updating your iOS or macOS. Old software can cause conflicts. If problems continue uninstall and reinstall Safari. As a last resort reset all settings on your device. This won’t delete your data but will clear custom settings.

Remember to back up your device before making big changes. If nothing helps contact Apple Support for more help.

Fixing Network and Connectivity Problems

When Safari won’t load pages check your internet connection first. Try opening a different app that uses the internet. If other apps work fine the problem is likely with Safari.

Reset your network settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This can fix many connection issues. You’ll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords after.

If pages still won’t load try turning off content blockers in Safari settings. Some blockers can interfere with certain websites. You can also try using a different DNS server in your Wi-Fi settings.

For stubborn network problems use a tool like ReiBoot to repair your iOS system without data loss.

Rectifying In-app Functionalities and Crashes

If specific features in Safari aren’t working right start by clearing your browsing data. Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data. Tap Remove All Website Data.

Check if any extensions are causing issues. Disable all extensions then enable them one by one to find the culprit. Remove any problematic extensions.

For repeated crashes on certain websites try disabling JavaScript. Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript. Turn it off and see if the issue stops.

If Safari keeps freezing or closing unexpectedly check for available updates. New versions often fix bugs and improve stability.

Optimizing Safari Settings and Data Management

Safari settings can boost privacy and speed up your browser. Good data management keeps things running smoothly.

Enhancing Privacy and Security with Safari

Turn on Private Browsing to hide your online activity. Go to Safari and tap the tabs icon. Then choose “Private” to open a new private window. This stops websites from tracking you.

Use iCloud Private Relay to hide your IP address. Go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Private Relay. Turn it on to encrypt your web traffic. This makes it harder for others to see what you do online.

Install content blockers to stop ads and trackers. Go to Settings > Safari > Content Blockers. Pick blockers you want to use. These can speed up web pages and protect your privacy.

Managing Safari Data for Better Performance

Clear your browsing data often to free up space. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This removes old websites and cookies. It can fix slow loading issues.

Manage website data to control what sites store on your device. Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data. Here you can see how much space each site uses. Remove data from sites you don’t use often.

Turn off JavaScript if web pages load slowly. Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced. Switch off JavaScript. This can speed up some sites but may break others. Only use this if you’re having big speed issues.
