Uniworld's S.S. Bon Voyage on a river cruise through Bordeaux

France has to be one of my favourite holiday destinations. It has all the convenience of being close to home yet with the unmistakable feeling of immersion in another culture that, whilst being recognisable to our own, is unique in its heritage and traditions.

Travelling to Bordeaux in spring, as the region's vineyards had begun to burst into life, was an absolute delight. Incredibly easy to reach by a short flight from the UK, you could also travel by train, via Paris, or even drive should you wish.

I chose to cruise with Uniworld on an 8-night Brilliant Bordeaux itinerary on board River Royal, which has recently undergone a complete refurbishment to become S.S. Bon Voyage. Tempted by the high level of inclusivity and the line's focus on the region in which each ship sails, reflected in the design of each vessel, I was impressed by the level of comfort offered on board.

Uniworld - S.S. Bon Voyage in Libourne

The ongoing refurbishment programme undertaken by Uniworld is designed to improve an already excellent fleet, and although the interior of River Royal didn't demand a refit, the new S.S. Bon Voyage looks amazing, with an impressive, polished wood-clad lobby and stylish emerald tones in Le Salon Champagne, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's personal abode, Villa Majorelle. All has been designed to immerse guests in French culture, art and wine and I especially like the sizeable pool on the sun deck.

Throughout the trip the included tours and excursions were focused on the region's superb food and wine, and dining on board also reflected regional and seasonal food. As well as visiting vineyards with an emphasis on the grand cru, we also had an excellent wine tasting on board in the private wine tasting room with the Sommelier, who didn't seem old enough to have such an extensive knowledge! In fact, the whole trip was a wine tasting extravaganza.

Uniworld - S.S. Le Bon Voyage - La Cave des Vins

We visited Chateau Royal de Cazeneuve, still inhabited by descendants of the family that built the Chateau. As well as meeting the owners and enjoying a tour we also sat down to a four-course lunch, each course accompanied by a sweet wine which was quite a revelation as to how well they matched.

The culinary delights continued in Libourne, where we enjoyed a visit to the farmer's market and gathered a picnic of local produce to eat by the river. One day on board there was an opportunity to enjoy some local oysters, arranged in a huge display, and whilst not many guests joined in, we certainly enjoyed them!

Pont de Pierre, Bordeaux

Our last excursion was a bike ride round Bordeaux, a welcomingly flat city, on an easy cycling route which was very enjoyable.

The experience delivered by Uniworld was faultless. Service on board was attentive with a hard-working team always happy to help and make sure we were comfortable with a drink in hand. The local guides were knowledgeable and happy to speak at length when answering questions and the chance to travel so extensively around a relatively small region of France helped convey the distinctive identity of the area. If Bordeaux isn't on your river cruise list, it really should be!

You cant beat a Uniworld Cruise

Been on 17 Uniworld cruises now and they are all absolutely perfect. The boat are lovely, the staff are great and the trips out everyday are very very enjoyable. Sophie, who works in the Guernsey office, is especially helpful and knows a great deal about the cruises if you want any help. I can not recommend these cruises enough. The only downside I feel is their pricing structure as the prices change a lot and so it feels a little bit like a lottery when you book as you might find 2 weeks later the same cruise is lots cheaper and that can be a bit frustrating especially when your budget is quite tight as mine is.

Top quality river cruises - Highly recommended

Top quality river cruises. We have done the Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Rhine and Danube cruises - all different but of excellent standard. Met some great people to share unique travel experiences with. Nothing too much trouble! Highly recommended

I booked a cruise to travel this…

I booked a cruise to travel this November, for my birthday. I booked my airfare thru Uniworld also. Thinking it would be best, just in case anything happens one stop to better help me to the cruise and back home. My flight got canceled/changed going to paris. I saw this as a Hiccup at first. I reach out to Uniworld, hoping they could help. Much to my surprise they have had attitude: we have no control on the air. I will not go in details. its sad I was very excited a week ago to go, and now i still going because its paid for and I will hope the for the best on getting there. Their customer service before were great, of course that was before I paid them, now they are awful. If looking for River Cruise Company look for another one. I wish I had.

Be very cautious in using this Travel…

Be very cautious in using this Travel Company. Booked a cruise through AAA during the pandemic with every intention of going on the trip. Just before travel date our doctor advised not to travel based on our age and the US State Department had travel warnings out for travel to Europe. Consequently we were forced to cancel. When AAA and I both tried to get back the one half cost of the trip penalty, Uniworld basically told us that 's too bad. Meanwhile our agent at AAA said she had used other travel companies and were able to attain full refunds for her customers during the Pandemic. I still might consider travel abroad but I definitely will not be using Uniworld.

Very poor, not what we expected

My wife and I have been on 40+ ocean cruises but this was our first river cruise. We booked with Uniworld as part of the Red Carnation group, a hotel group that we frequent on a regular basis. We booked a Douro River cruise from Porto but was disappointed even before we stepped on the boat. Communication was poor regarding embarkation times and cruise itinerary, the information in our suite was from the previous week. Our main issue was the poor service in the restaurant, lack of organisation and lack of experienced staff. The food was ok but not great, but everything was hard work. At breakfast, if you asked for toast you need to ask for butter or you receive dry bread. If you ask for tea and coffee you must ask for milk and sugar if not you go without. The same for dinner, we were offered wine but no wine glasses on the table and that was the same every night. The restaurant staff were a new team and it showed. After a few days we finally found out the reason for the poor service, the cruise is not a Uniworld Cruise, it’s operated by a local contractor who has the license to operate on the Douro River. The boat and 2 butlers are supplied by Uniworld, everyone else is a local contractor. I did email the CEO of Uniworld with my comments but no reply. This is our first and last Uniworld Cruise.

Times change.

Times change. We have been on a Uniworld cruise and it was wonderful. Beautiful boats and excellent crew. Sadly, behind the scenes is a different story. Once we saw an excellent promotional presentation, then the last one was truly amateur. We had two Sales Managers reminiscent of the "Judith Chalmers" character played by Victoria Wood and the promised word from the CEO was a poorly presented video. But it gets worse. In spite of covid and the impact it has had on the travel industry, Uniworld has turned into what looks like a money grabbing holiday bucket shop. We were booked on a Christmas Cruise. When the final payment was due, Hungary and Austria (the bulk of the cruise) were not accepting UK travellers. I asked if we could delay payment until the situation was cleared up. I was told no, and that my only option was to cancel. As a gesture of goodwill (a phrase I hate) Uniworld agreed to hold my deposit as a Future Cruise Credit. No problem there. Now, with there being no tourist access to Austria, the cruise cannot be going ahead. I asked if this meant I could now have my deposit refunded and again was told no. Another cruise company I booked with, not only refunded all my money but gave us a substantial credit by way of apology. The other irritation with Uniworld is the way their pricing is all over the place. We found, after we'd cancelled, that they were offering the cruise for half price. No issue for us, but imagine how those that had paid full price must have been feeling. There are other pricing practices I find unacceptable, but not for here. I have told Uniworld I will book something to use the FCC, but it will be the last holiday I book with them. There are T's and C's, but there is also consideration for the customer.

River cruise uniworld Bordeaux S.S. Bon Voyage,

Was. A very very big disappointment from start to finish newly refurbished ship First the lift did not work and many parts of the ship was not ready for customers I was sure that this would have been a great experience but this was not the case food was ok was expecting a gourmet experience with cookery demonstrations not the case Terrible smell bathroom water in sink took time to drain and many other thing that were not up to scratch I have done many rivers with a few different company’s and I expected the same or better from UNIWORLD but that was not to happen my medication got locked in safe and was not able to get it until after ten the next day Worst of all was my key opened other door on boat they new this and did nothing it was very disappointing plus they had no hand sanitizers as the forgot to get the cables for the first week this was my 60th birthday treat no so

Hello dee112, Thanks for your comment but I think you made a mistake with the name of the company. We called : Bordeaux River Cruise and we have nothing in commom with Uniworld. We are in Regards Bordeaux River Cruise

The guide tried his best to repeat all what he had said in English, but the vineyard owner couldn't speak it so you would lose out on all the information she had to give if you can't speak French. The tour highlights the main areas of Bordeaux including the two main bridges crossing the river and in good weather it offers some beautiful views. The main thing you're paying for is the wine tasting and the nibbles, all of which are of good quality, but the activity in general is a bit overpriced given that this is not the best thing you could be doing with your time here.

Hello 0161manny, Thank you for taking the time to give us your review. It is a great pleasure to take notice of your satisfaction following your cruise and the sightseeing. Concerning the guid and the vineyard, we are giving careful and due consideration to your opinion. We really hope to have a chance to welcome you again among us for a better souvenir of our boat, may be for a restaurant cruise ? Sincerely, Bordeaux River Cruise

This is ok to do if you treat it as a tour down the river. You get to taste only two wines and things do get a bit lost in translation.

Hello TB2267, Thanks to share your experience about the wine tasting cruise. We forward your comment at all our team. Regards, Bordeaux River Cruise

It's not all it's cracked up to be, you only get a choice of two main courses if you pay for the premium seats.Food choice is poor and of low quality for the money. The river cruise is ok in it's self, you basically get to see Bordeaux from the river with all the light's on at night.

uniworld bordeaux river cruise reviews

Was scheduled as three hours starting at 12 noon arriving at 11.45. There were twelve in the queue.Passengers kept arriving, boat departed at 12.30! We returned at 2.30! The confirmation said English speaking guide. No guide. Starter and dessert excellent, main course chewy lamb shoulder and harricot beans. Poor value.

Hello CarolD56, Thanks to share your experience with us. We are delighted to read you were appreciated the quality of food. We are so sorry to read your comment and your disappointment. In deed, the timing of the lunch is this one. Maybe there were misunderstoods during the reservation and this kind of cruise was not for you. Actually, we propose a sightseeing cruise that's called UNESCO or a package with la Cité du Vin. I transfer all your comments at the commercial department. We hope you to see you again beside it these comments. Regards, The team of Bordeaux River Cruise

This was a lovely experience for me and my husband. The staff on the tasting were very friendly and informative, we were just 1 of 2 couples who were English speaking and had a fabulous time.

Many thanks for your comment and be sure that our crew enjoy it.

Why Uniworld is the best in the world for river cruises

The cruise line our discerning, nay f ussy, travel editor can't fault

uniworld ship

Offering an exceptional travel experience, even beyond cruise holidays , Uniworld's offering left us in awe after we experienced the cruise line for the first time on a seven-night Venetian cruise on its stunning ship, S.S. La Venezia ( try it with celebrated chef Tom Kerridge next year ).

We're not the only ones to be blown away by the company, either. The boutique cruise line has dozens of awards and accolades under its belt, including the Best River Cruise Line award in the prestigious Telegraph Travel Awards and a top three spot in Travel & Leisure's World’s Best Awards .

There's simply nothing else like it, perhaps because it is a cruise line founded by a five-star boutique hotel brand, which believes 'no request is too large and no detail is too small.' Everything from the service to the food is delivered to impress and once you take to the water with Uniworld, you are unlikely to ever look back.

To give us the most authentic feel for the river cruise line, which attracts only the few in search of extraordinary holidays, we explored the ship from top to bottom (including going below deck in the most luxurious way possible) and spent a week hearing first-hand what guests from, Kent to Australia, thought of the company before we felt confident to declare Uniworld as the world's best river cruise line.

With a high returning guest rate (it's not unheard of to be sailing with guests who are on their seventh or even their 50th Uniworld cruise) and staff who are proud to say "we don't consider ourselves to have any competitors," this is the bucket list cruise line you'll want to tick off again and again.

Read on for our honest review of why Uniworld is the best river cruise line in the world…

The style and decor

uniworld

Stepping onto a Uniworld ship is like entering a boutique hotel - but better. The style is as elegant and refined as it gets, with the finest details and luxury wherever you turn. Uniworld's small ships take inspiration from their destinations, complementing their surroundings while maintaining the sophistication of the brand. Modelled after sister company Red Carnation Hotels, which has the likes of Rubens at the Palace in London and The Oyster Box in South Africa among its collection, the ships are essentially luxury hotels on water.

You won't hear loud announcements and the high staff-to-guest ratio means you're not just a number - they'll remember your name. You can expect the finest decor, with bespoke fabric, original works of art and beautiful antiques. On La Venezia, the fabrics are by Venetian maker Fortuny and the chandeliers and mirrors made from Murano glass.

The suites throughout Uniworld ships have marble bathrooms, and in every room or suite an incredibly comfortable Savoir bed awaits for restful nights on the water.

The destinations

uniworld

While we're almost certain we could enjoy a Uniworld cruise, wherever it's heading, the river cruise specialist does its utmost to bring travellers the most gorgeous locations to explore in style. Want to visit Venice and its islands ? Uniworld will take you to discover the highlights and see the islands many tourists haven't heard of. Fancy experiencing a Nile cruise ? You can tick off the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and the sounds and sights of Cairo while enjoying the luxuries of Uniworld.

Or, maybe you have a far-flung cruise in mind? Uniworld's Mekong River cruise in Cambodia and Vietnam takes you to ancient temples and gives you the chance to meet local villagers, while sleeping in five-star surroundings on stunning ship, Mekong Jewel.

The cruise line's Bordeaux (with TV's Monica Galetti), Danube and Douro itineraries are other fantastic itineraries guests keep returning for.

uniworld

We can't praise Uniworld's staff enough and neither can other guests. Guest Deb, from Pennsylvania, who has been on six Uniworld cruises, told us: "Every staff member makes you feel special. They really want to make your experience wonderful." Meanwhile, Joanne, from New Jersey, said: "The staff get to know you quickly and intuit what you want and need. They bring you something before even you know you want it. I don't think you get the same attention at a hotel."

With a 1 to 2.4 staff-to-guest ratio, it's clear that service is a high priority for Uniworld, but as Joanne added, "they're helpful but not in your face."

Wendy, from Warwickshire, told us how she would frequently help herself to the orange water available for guests at the bar and one time made a passing comment to the bar staff about how much she enjoyed the drink. By the end of the day, she found a carafe of orange water in her suite.

Another guest, Charlotte, from New Hampshire, described the staff like a "relative who knows you, knows your likes and your dislikes," saying that it makes the cruise "special."

The incredible excursions

uniworld

While life on board the ship is a joy, stepping off a Uniworld cruise will leave you with fabulous memories you can't miss. Uniworld cruises are packed with carefully-curated included and optional excursions, which include after-hours tours of popular attractions (the perfect way to skip the queues), walking tours that provide a look at local life, and the privilege of meeting working people in their workshops.

During our cruise, we had an outstanding after-hours visit of Basilica di San Marco, one of Venice's most popular sites, where we had the cathedral to ourselves and were able to bask in the tranquility and beauty of this world-famous attraction after the crowds had left.

One solo guest, who wished to enjoy Uniworld's excursions at her own pace, told us that she had booked the same cruise twice, back-to-back, so she could spread out her days and ensure she didn't miss out on anything.

The butler service

uniworld

While you'll be treated to a personalised experience regardless of the cabin you book, suite guests on Uniworld cruises have the benefit of their very own butler who will take this service to another level. Working to the motto that 'no request is too large, no detail is too small,' the suite butlers, trained to the standards required by Buckingham Palace, do everything they can to make you feel important.

Whether you would like a special dinner organised just for you and your loved one, or a private sabering ceremony (a champagne sabering ceremony by the ship's butler at the start of a sailing is a Uniworld tradition), your wish is their command.

While we didn't have any extravagant requests for butler Marko during our time on La Venezia, we knew he was at our service for anything we needed, whether it was a cup of tea brought to our room, or help unpacking our suitcase.

The behind-the-scenes dinner

uniworld

If you've always wanted to see what life is like below deck, Uniworld has the most luxurious way to do it. Its Progressive Dinners (extra charge, with a maximum of 10 passengers) take you to the bridge to find out about life as a captain, from the captain himself. The dinners are usually a surprise so stop reading now if you'd prefer no spoilers...

They might take you into the kitchen to see how the ship's elaborate meals are meticulously prepared. A look inside the steaming hot engine could be part of the tour, as well as a chat with the laundry staff and a peek at the staff room. The best part is tucking into a different dish along the way, culminating with your main meal in the ship's private dining room, all while meeting the wonderful people who make the cruise holiday perfect.

The thoughtful touches

uniworld

Whether its sustainability, guest safety or satisfying your hunger, Uniworld goes above and beyond. You'll find compostable slippers and a gifted water bottle for each guest to stay hydrated while caring for the environment. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are elaborate enough, with a varied selection and locally sourced ingredients used to create delicious feasts, but if you find yourself feeling peckish in between, the Panini Bar has pastries and fruit you can help yourself to and panini that are made to order.

Another observation we made was the care and attention of the tour managers on the excursions. During our after-hours tour of Basilica di San Marco, the tour manager stood at the entrance of the crypt, with its low ceiling, and warned each and every guest to watch their head as they made their way down the stairs.

Back on the ship, the housekeeping team are nicknamed 'fairies' for being in and out of the rooms without a peep. Then there's the River Heritage Club that rewards your loyalty with complimentary laundry, cocktail parties and savings on your next trip.

You really can't fault it

uniworld

After many conversations with other guests, we failed to find a reason not to love Uniworld. Not only do the staff think of everything a guest could possibly need before they've thought of it themselves, but they continue to look for ways to improve.

We received a feedback form on day two of the cruise (naturally, we struggled to provide anything negative) but one of our new friends told us that she mentioned that she would have liked some Greek yoghurt and additional healthy options at the breakfast buffet. The next morning and every morning for the rest of the cruise, there was Greek yoghurt and a large selection of fruit at the table.

Good Housekeeping has partnered with Uniworld to bring you two exclusive cruises for you to experience the world's best river cruise line for yourself. In April 2024, you can sail the Venetian Lagoon with chef Tom Kerridge .

And between November 2023 and March 2024, you can explore the Mekong River and save £500 .

FIND OUT MORE

You can also sail Bordeaux in style while sipping fine wine and getting to know TV's Monica Galetti during a visit to a farmers' market in April 2024.

Paris Post-Cruise Extension

No visit to France would be complete without seeing the city that is widely regarded as the most beautiful in the world—Paris. Nothing compares to the charm of its neighborhoods, the grandeur of its awe-inspiring architecture and monuments, or the cosmopolitan elegance of its boulevards. Delve into the delights this magnificent city has to offer, from the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées to the quaint neighborhood cafés beloved by locals.

Included in your 3-day stay:

  • 2 nights at the Hôtel du Louvre (or similar)
  • Breakfast daily and all service charges, taxes, and porterage
  • Opera Garnier Discovery Walk
  • English-speaking expert
  • All transfers

Day to Day:

Day 1: Paris You’ll disembark and travel aboard a TGV train bound for the dazzling city of Paris, riding at high speed through the serene French countryside. Once you reach the hotel, you will be greeted by your local host, who will show you the neighborhood. The rest of the day is yours to do with as you wish. Unwind at the hotel or go out and explore the city. There are so many fabulous things to see and do in Paris; your host can offer suggestions to help you make the best use of your time. You might visit Montmartre to watch the artists working in the Place du Tertre or go for a stroll down the famed Champs-Élysées.

Day 2: Paris FEATURED EXCURSION: Opera Garnier discovery walk Put on comfortable walking shoes and plan to spend a couple of hours strolling through the geographical heart of Paris. Begin in the 9th arrondissement and the Opéra de Paris Garnier, also known as Palais Garnier. Work on this extravagant opera house began in 1865 and continued for 15 trouble-filled years, which included the discovery of an underground lake beneath the construction site. It’s still there, incidentally—confined to an enormous cistern where carp swim and rescue divers train. Your guide will take you inside to explore this glorious tribute to Second Empire opulence, complete with dazzling chandeliers, red-velvet wall coverings and draperies, gold-leafed cherubs, marble friezes, and a spectacular 20th-century ceiling by Marc Chagall.

Then head out through the 8th arrondissement, exploring the wide avenues and arcades designed by Baron Haussmann when he modernized Paris between 1852 and 1870. As you walk toward the river and the 1st arrondissement, you’ll come to the Palais-Royal, built by Cardinal Richelieu in 1629 (Louis XIV lived here as a child). The palace itself now houses government offices, but the garden offers a lovely breath of fresh air and greenery.

Your next destination, just a block or two away, is La Comédie-Française, the only state theater to have its own troupe—it specializes in the work of Molière— before you loop back toward your hotel, passing the National Library and the Paris Bourse.

Note: Occasionally, the Opera Garnier will not be available for this extension. On such occasions, an alternative experience will be arranged, such as a visit to the Musee d’Orsay or a walking tour of Paris’ popular Le Marais district.

Day 3: Paris You have sampled exquisite culinary delights and experienced the best of Paris’ legendary sights. Now it’s time to check out of the hotel and be transferred to Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport for your trip home. Your Uniworld adventure may be over, but we know you’ll enjoy the memories you’ve made for years to come.

$1,219 per person (for 2 guests)

For solo travelers, there is a single supplement of $559.

Note: Post-Cruise Extension is available on Brilliant Bordeaux and select departures of Burgundy & Provence.

Prague Pre-Cruise Extension

A city unlike any other, Prague offers a wonderful addition to your holiday cruise. Wander its old-world streets and enjoy the opportunity to compare the festivities of the classic German Christmas Markets to the unique yuletide traditions of the Czech Republic.

Included in your 3-day stay:

  • 2 nights at the Cosmopolitan Hotel (or similar)
  • Breakfast daily and all service charges, taxes, and porterage
  • Prague Old Town & Castle District with Christmas Markets
  • English-speaking expert
  • All transfers

Day to Day:

Day 1: Prague Once you have cleared customs at Václav Havel Airport Prague, you’ll be greeted by a Uniworld representative who will help you check into the hotel. You can choose to rest or go out and explore the city. Your local host will be happy to offer additional suggestions.

Day 2: Prague FEATURED EXCURSION: Prague Old Town and Castle District with Christmas Markets After breakfast, begin a magical tour of the city of Prague. Your motorcoach will take you across the Vltava River (you might know the Vltava as the Moldau, the namesake of the beautiful tone poem by Smetana) and up to Prague Castle, where kings, emperors, and presidents have had their offices for almost a millennium.

You’ll disembark the coach and pass through the castle’s protective walls, taking in the Gothic structure of St. Vitus Cathedral, which took 600 years to build, and Vladislav Hall, whose complex stone-vaulting system was one of the most advanced engineering feats of the late Middle Ages. Afterwards, you can choose to re-board the motorcoach for a ride back to the hotel or continue with a stroll through Golden Lane, the street that housed Prague’s 17th-century alchemists. Follow your guide through the picturesque Lesser Quarter to Charles Bridge, one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

The walking tour will end in Old Town Square, which is framed by splendid buildings, including the Church of Our Lady before Týn and Prague’s City Hall (be sure to check out its famous astronomical clock). The dramatic rooftops and spires provide a perfect, fairytale-like setting for the city’s largest Christmas market. A magnificent Christmas tree presides over the square from Advent through the New Year, and rows of red-roofed stalls brim with regional crafts—ceramics, carved wooden figures, Bohemian crystal, and garnet and amber jewelry in particular. Roasting chestnuts, cinnamon-dusted pastries, and hot spiced wine add their tempting aromas to the festive air, and costumed carolers stroll among the stalls singing traditional Czech Christmas songs.

The rest of the day is at your leisure, so dive in and delight in the seasonal fun. You might wish to experience some of the season’s glorious music in a gorgeous historic concert hall or church: St. Clement’s Cathedral often hosts classical concerts during Advent, as does St. George’s Basilica in Prague Castle. Municipal House is a wonderful place to hear music by the nation’s foremost composer, Bedřich Smetana, and the National Theater stages The Nutcracker regularly during the holidays. Or visit one of Prague’s famous marionette theaters—the Czech love affair with puppetry dates back centuries.

Day 3: Prague Use the morning to do any last-minute shopping or for one last stroll through this beautiful capital. After lunch, it’s time for your exciting Uniworld river cruise to begin!

$1,049 per person (for 2 guests)

For solo travelers, there is a single supplement of $359.

This little road between Blaye and Bourg-sur-Gironde winds through picturesque hamlets with equally picturesque names—Pain de Sucre, Marmisson and Roque de Thau among them—limestone cliffs on one side, the Gironde on the other. Fishing huts on stilts stand above the waters of the estuary; charming 19th-century stone houses built by sea captains sit tidily along the road. Many of these captains traveled to far-off places and returned with exotic plants, which they planted in their gardens and along the road (hence the route’s name). But the history of these cliffs extends far beyond the 19th century—people have inhabited the area for thousands of years.

Upon returning to Blaye, your guide will take you through the 17th-century demilune-shaped citadel built by famed military engineer Vauban. This fortress design was the one Vauban, Louis XIV’s favorite military engineer, found most satisfactory, and he built some 300 of them in the Sun King’s realm. The citadel contains the ruins of a medieval castle, houses, squares, streets, even a convent, all enclosed within stark walls. If you stand on top of those walls, you will have a terrific view of the estuary— this view was the field of fire, giving the citadel command of the river.

Yet sometimes our guests want something that goes even "above and beyond" our included experiences. In light of this, we now offer guests a curated selection of optional excursions, available for an additional charge.

Rendez-vous chez rémy martin.

Not all wine remains wine: some of it is distilled into cognac. Rémy Martin has been making cognac for almost three centuries, refining the process over the years. Tour the facility and learn how this elixir is created, then taste three different cognacs with complementary nibbles.

*Masterpiece Collection are optional experiences that go above and beyond our daily selection of included excursions and can be booked for an additional fee. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences can be pre-booked. Please note that requests to pre-book must be made by calling our Reservations Team no later than 6 days prior to departure and are subject to availability. Some venues are limited in the number of guests they can accommodate. Guests can book onboard (space permitting) and pay in Euros. Pre-booked Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are refundable up to 5 days prior to the cruise/tour start date; if inside of 5 days they are non-refundable. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation (with full refund) if minimum is not met. Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are non-commissionable. Prices are subject to change. Masterpiece Collection excursions may not operate if they occur on a holiday or if they require a minimum number of participants and that minimum is not met.

Libourne (Saint-Émilion)

Libourne

With Libourne as your base, travel to nearby breathtaking Saint-Émilion and immerse yourself more deeply in the region’s history and wine culture. The medieval town of Saint-Émilion is an ideal place to linger. Wander its cobblestone lanes lined with wine shops and bakeries, and stop to admire the amazing rock-hewn church that extends beneath the city’s streets.

Note: Today's lunch will be on your own; ask your Cruise Manager for recommendations on the best nearby restaurants.

Hilltop Saint-Émilion offers both exceptional architecture and historic vineyards. The Romans were the first to plant grapes here, and this was the first vineyard region to be protected by UNESCO because of its history. Shops brimming with wine and wine tools line the steep cobblestone streets; medieval ramparts that bore witness to battles for control between French and English monarchs still stand; and vineyards encroach upon the village. Of all the sights, however, perhaps the most extraordinary is the 12th-century church carved into a cliff. Only the tower is above ground; the rest of the church is subterranean. Its numerous underground galleries provided refuge during periods of strife, and include the grotto where St. Émilion, for whom the town is named, lived out his life in the ninth century. You have to see it for yourself—you’ll be amazed by its almost unfathomable construction. After touring Saint-Émilion, you’ll visit the cellars of a fantastic estate where you’ll taste some of the world’s most highly rated wines.

Château Cooking Class

Château Ambe Tour Pourret, with five hectares planted with merlot and cabernet franc vines, is a comparatively young wine house, dating to 1925 in its current form (though parts of the chateau are much older). Tour the winery before you meet your chef/teacher, then walk to the well-equipped, modern professional kitchen. Tie on your apron (you'll get to keep it as a souvenir) and delve into the tasks the chef assigns you. You might zest kaffir limes to season a first course of seared duck foie gras or make the cherry sauce in kirsch that accompanies it or help to prepare wild trout or a decadent strawberry tart. You'll learn something about the art of French sauces in the process, and then you'll take a seat in the elegant dining room and enjoy the lunch you've helped prepare-naturally, each course will be accompanied by the appropriate wine from Chateau Ambe Tour Pourret's cellars.

Grand Cru Tasting

Meet the cellar master of an estate that produces one of St. Émilion's finest wines, Château Beauséjour Bécot. They'll take you on a full tour of the property, during which you'll be privy to insight on the terroir that helps create such incredible wines, the history of the family, their underground cellars and more. After your tour, taste the fruits of this estate yourself on a terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Libourne, Bordeaux

How could you visit this rich agricultural land without delving into a farmer's market? Libourne’s market is the heart and soul of the town; everyone comes here to choose the freshest vegetables, the ripest cheeses, the most luscious fruits, the loveliest flowers, and to chat with the producers and growers. Check out the stalls brimming with produce in the market square, then duck into the covered market and savor the enticing aromas of bread and cheese, fish and meat. After exploring the market, you and a small group of other travelers will be invited to push open the doors of ateliers, homes and shops, meeting the artisans who make some of the goods arrayed so enticingly in the market.

Bordeaux’s Port de la Lune is home to a submarine base with a checkered past. Originally built during the German occupation of France in WWII, and later the target of allied bombings, this building has since attracted artists who wish to reclaim the site for beauty and culture. Its stark walls and history have served as a poignant backdrop to artistic installations for decades. Tonight, you’ll experience this for yourself at the Bassins des Lumières , a stunning and immersive light show projected against the walls of the base.

Discover Bordeaux’s many charms today, either on foot with a local expert or on two wheels—the locals’ preferred way to navigate the city’s charming backstreets. You have a wonderful selection of active opportunities to see this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Catch a tram at the Quai des Chartrons to the Place de la Comédie, the heart of Bordeaux’ Golden Triangle. Though Bordeaux was the capital of Aquitaine in the Middle Ages and has its share of Gothic churches, it reached its apex in the 18th century. The splendid honey-colored stone buildings from this era make up a city core that UNESCO has designated a World Heritage Site (this is the district that inspired Baron Haussmann when he redesigned Paris at the behest of Napoleon III). Trade with the French colonies built this handsome district, furnishing vanilla, sugar, spices and cocoa to inventive chocolatiers and bakers, who used these goods to create iconic desserts. Chocolate, once a Spanish monopoly, became part of Bordeaux’ culinary heritage when banished Spanish Jews brought the art of chocolate-making to France. What are Bordeaux’ present-day residents enjoying when they step inside the luxurious food halls and elegant shops in this neighborhood? Find out as you sample the delicious handiwork of Bordeaux's bakers, and learn a few recipes too!

Hop on a bike and wheel with your expert guide along the Quai des Chartrons, a riverfront neighborhood that was the purview of British wine merchants back when they dominated the wine trade. It fell on hard times in the 20th century, but the tall merchant houses have since been reclaimed; now they house welcoming shops and cafés. Pedal past the antiques shops of Rue Notre Dame and the Church of St. Louis on your way to major city squares such as the Bourse and Parliament before heading back to the ship along the banks of the Garonne. Of course your outing will include a stop for refreshments at one of the delightful cafés you pass.

Retro Sidecar Bordeaux Tour

Get ready to explore a medley of what's best in Bordeaux! Your gentleman driver will take you on a journey to the unmissable places of the city: Grosse Cloche, Place de la Bourse, the Darwin district, Basilique Saint-Michel, and any requested stops you'd like to make as well. This truly unique and exciting experience will take you well into the night with a local who knows all the histories, folklore, and of course, best spots for a photo-op. Quel charm!

Retro Sidecar Romantic Tour

Watch the city come alive at night with a sidecar tour of brilliant Bordeaux. Wind through backstreets, lit-up avenues and, of course, the most iconic sites of Bordeaux, like the Grosse Cloche, Place de la Bourse and Saint Michael Basilica. Feel the city's festive energy as you zip through town on this vintage masterpiece before stopping for a photo, a sip of champagne and even a romantic moment with your sweetheart. Truly a night to remember!

Disembark the ship. If your cruise package includes a group departure transfer or if you have purchased a private departure transfer, you will be transferred to Bordeaux-Mérignac International Airport for your flight home.
