On October 30, 2005 they broke new ground once again by putting on the very first video game concert in Canada (Vancouver). They followed with groundbreaking first ever game concert performances in countries such as England, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, France, Taiwan and China. Video Games Live was also the very first American video game concert to perform in Asia (Korea). In 2007 they were recipients of a major industry award in Brazil for "Special Breakthrough Achievement" following their performances in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo the year before. On October 22, 2007 Video Games Live was the FIRST and ONLY show to sell out the Royal Festival Hall (Philharmonia Orchestra) since the refurbishment earlier in the year. The Video Games Live: Volume One album (EMI Classics) was released worldwide in the summer of 2008 and debuted on the Billboard Charts at #10. Marty O'Donnell

Martin O'Donnell is a composer known for his work on video game developer Bungie's series, such as Myth, Oni, Halo, and Destiny. O'Donnell collaborated with his musical colleague Michael Salvatori for many of the scores; he has also directed voice talent and sound design for the Halo trilogy. O'Donnell began his career in music writing television and radio jingles such as the FlintStones vitamins song and scoring for radio stations and films. O'Donnell moved to composing video game music when his company, TotalAudio, did the sound design for the 1997 title Riven. After producing the music for Myth II, Bungie contracted O'Donnell to work on their other projects, including Oni and the project that would become Halo: Combat Evolved. Neal Acree is a BAFTA nominated film, television and video game composer and conductor whose work includes the massively popular game franchises World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Overwatch, Revelation Online, shows like Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Witchblade and over 30 feature films. A versatile and prolific composer with roots in classical, rock and electronic music, Acree's music has been recorded and performed by orchestras and choirs around the world, including the hit concert tour Video Games Live.

In 2014 Neal’s critically acclaimed, Asian themed music for World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria would open a new door, this time to the East. When Chinese game giant NetEase gave Neal the unique opportunity to write a traditional Chinese score for their fantasy MMO Revelation Online (one of the first times a Chinese game company had hired a Westerner to do so), he felt strangely at home. Having been raised by a father whose love of Chinese cinema and culture was mirrored by the passion for art and music that he passed on to his son, Neal found an unexpected familiarity in a musical language that was on the surface so foreign. The result was one of his most passionate and critically acclaimed scores that led to several more collaborations with NetEase including Imperial Reign, Wildfire and Legends of Tibet.

In addition to winning three Hollywood Music In Media Awards, a Golden Reel Award, six Game Audio Network Guild Awards and four Global Music Awards, Neal was also nominated for a BAFTA, four Academy Of Interactive Arts and Sciences Awards, two ASCAP Composer's Choice Awards as well as numerous critic awards. In 2016 Neal was named the BSOSpirit Jerry Goldsmith "Composer of the Year" at a ceremony in Malaga, Spain.

11 Best Touring Video Game Orchestras

These phenomenal orchestras bring the music of favorite video games to life!

Music in gaming can truly transform an experience. From sweeping overtures to character-specific themes, the musicality of a game can elevate it to new heights. Depending on the type of game you’re playing, the music could be something light and zany. Or, if emotions are heightened, it could be rousing and stirring. Regardless, it should be memorable.

RELATED: Game Soundtracks That Prove Video Games Deserve A Spot At The Grammy’s

It's no surprise that there have been a number of concerts celebrating the best in video game music. While some concerts hone in on one series or specific game, others take a broader approach and offer music from a selection of well-known and exciting games. If you’re looking to have an intimate night out with some of the best gaming music, some of these video game orchestras still tour. If you prefer a quiet evening at home, many of these can be listened to online, including ones that aren't traveling anymore.

Updated September 15, 2023 by PJ Molloy: There's something magical about video game music, and nowhere is that more apparent than the endlessly talented touring video game orchestras that bless the world with beautiful arrangements of some of the greatest video game music of all time. Now that the pandemic is over, music venues are open again, and video game concerts are making a comeback . Some are scheduled to tour throughout 2024, while others have sadly stopped and can only be experienced through YouTube or Spotify. Either way, if anyone tries to argue that video game music isn’t real art, show them these breathtaking video game orchestras and watch their argument crumble.

It's a smaller-scale intimate performance arranged by Arnie Roth and Eric Roth of AWR Music Productions — both of whom are widely respected international conductors.

6 Pokemon: Symphonic Evolutions

As you probably know, Pokemon is a game series where the goal is to catch ‘em all. If you’re a Pokedex completionist, you know how long a feat like that can be. It’s key to have some good tunes in the background, and thankfully, the Pokemon series delivers.

From 2014 to 2017, a video game orchestra called Symphonic Evolutions toured, celebrating the very best Pokemon music from both the games and the anime. Concerts always ended with an encore of the anime's original theme song Gotta Catch 'Em All.

5 Assassin's Creed Symphony World Tour

They even won a Grammy in 2022 for their arrangement of Meta Knight's Revenge from Kirby Super Star.

2 Final Fantasy 7 Remake World Tour

Most video game orchestras cover an entire series or even a variety of games . But when a tour focuses specifically on a single game, you’re in for a treat. The concert tour for Final Fantasy 7 Remake features a grand orchestra with music from Nobuo Uematsu.

Expect favorites like Flowers In The Church and the epic but anxiety-inducing One-Winged Angel. It's all featured alongside electrifying high-definition video scenes created just for the concert. There's something to be said about a shared experience with strangers. It can happen at the movies, at a play, or in this case, a video game orchestra. Game On! presents music from some of the world’s best games in its purest form.

Queen Launches A Video Game, Watch The First Trailer And Get All The Key Details

The band's big 2021 concert series was postponed due to COVID, but you can have a live music experience of sorts with the new game.

By Eddie Makuch on March 1, 2021 at 4:28AM PST

Iconic rock band Queen have released a video game that aims to give fans something they can't get right now--a live music experience. Queen: Rock Tour is out now on iOS and Android, and it's a rhythm game that invites players to experience some of Queen's most famous shows.

2021 was supposed to be a big year for Queen and live performances, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of John Deacon joining the band in 1971 as its bassist. Queen was planning a "Queen Golden Jubilee" concert with 29 dates across Europe, but it's been delayed to 2022 due to the virus. The Queen video game aims to help ease the wait for the concert series.

"Be a lockdown Rock Star! No turning back !!!" Queen's legendary guitarist Brian May said in a statement.

Featuring 20 of Queen's most famous songs--including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, And We Are The Champions--the game lets you perform as the band at 10 "historic" concert venues around the world like London, Munich, Houston, and Brazil.

There are more than 40 costumes to unlock, along with "exclusive images" from the Queen archives, that you can obtain by reaching certain milestones in the game.

Rock Tour was developed by Gameloft in partnership with Hollywood Records and Universal Music Group.

"Our ambition was to push the boundaries of music and gaming with a fun and rewarding experience that would put players in Queen shoes at pivotal points in their career and make them perform in real-time Queen's live music unlike ever before," Gameloft's Cedric Ratajczak said. "The creative challenge was to modernize the traditional rhythm-game genre with innovative and mobile-friendly twists inheriting from hyper-casual gaming, and with a unique and happy visual style that offers a timeless look to the band, appealing to the new generation of players."

No Caption Provided

Ratajczak said the team put "enormous attention" on the details to help make Rock Tour feel authentic. The developer said the game is aiming to set a new standard for "how band-focused music games could be executed on mobile today."

Rock Tour is free-to-play, supported by in-app purchases.

If you still have your old Rock Band guitars lying around, it’s now possible to use them in Fortnite ’s Rock Band -like music mode. As promised at launch , Fortnite Festival now supports a handful of guitar controllers across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The announcement comes as part of a fresh update headlined by Billie Eilish .

The supported controllers include the Riffmaster Wireless Guitar Controller, Rock Band 4 Rivals Wireless Fender Jaguar Guitar, and Rock Band 4 Wireless Fender Stratocaster Guitar. They can be used for playing both lead and bass guitar in Festival . Epic also says that “we’ll have more instrument controller news to announce in the future,” so don’t toss that plastic drum set just yet.

While it may seem a bit weird, the news is a bit of a full-circle moment. Epic acquired Rock Band developer Harmonix back in 2021 , and the studio developed Festival . Rock Band 4 , meanwhile, had an incredible run, with support ending just this year .

In addition to guitar support, the update also introduces a new Billie Eilish-themed season for Festival , which includes its own mini battle pass where players can unlock the pop star. You can check out all of the details right here .

Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers Band co-founder and legendary guitarist, dies at 80

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 8:38 PM EDT / AP

Guitar legend Dickey Betts, who co-founded the Allman Brothers Band and wrote their biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man," has died. He was 80.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer died at his home in Osprey, Florida, David Spero, Betts' manager of 20 years, confirmed. Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spero said.

"He was surrounded by his whole family and he passed peacefully. They didn't think he was in any pain," Spero said by phone.

Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre — Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans' music, which combined the blues, country, R&B and jazz with '60s rock.

DICKEY BETTS-DECESO

Founded in 1969, the Allmans were a pioneering jam band, trampling the traditional notion of three-minute pop songs by performing lengthy compositions in concert and on record. The band was also notable as a biracial group from the Deep South.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971, and founding member Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle crash a year later. That left Betts and Allman's younger brother Gregg as the band's leaders, but they frequently clashed, and substance abuse caused further dysfunction. The band broke up at least twice before reforming, and has had more than a dozen lineups.

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012. Betts left the group for good in 2000, and also played solo and with his own band Great Southern, which included his son, guitarist Duane Betts.

Forrest Richard Betts was born Dec. 12, 1943, and was raised in the Bradenton, Florida, area, near the highway 41 he sang about in "Ramblin' Man." His family had lived in area since the mid-19th century.

Betts grew up listening to country, bluegrass and Western swing, and played the ukulele and banjo before focusing on the electric guitar because it impressed girls. At 16 he left home for his first road trip, joining the circus to play in a band.

He returned home, and with bassist Oakley joined a group that became the Jacksonville, Florida-based band Second Coming. One night in 1969 Betts and Oakley jammed with Duane Allman, already a successful session musician, and his younger brother, and together they formed the Allman Brothers Band.

The group moved to Macon, Georgia, and released a self-titled debut album in 1969. A year later came the album "Idlewild South," highlighted by Betts' instrumental composition "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which soon became a concert staple.

The 1971 double album "At Fillmore East," now considered among the greatest live albums of the classic rock era, was the Allmans' commercial breakthrough and cemented their performing reputation by showcasing the unique guitar interplay between Allman and Betts. Their styles contrasted, with Allman playing bluesy slide guitar, while Betts' solos and singing tugged the band toward country. When layered in harmony, their playing was especially distinctive.

The group also had two drummers — "Jaimoe" Johanson, who is Black, and Butch Trucks.

Duane Allman died four days after "Fillmore" was certified as a gold record, but the band carried on and crowds continued to grow. The 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" rose to No. 1 on the charts and featured "Ramblin' Man," with Betts singing the lead and bringing twang to the Top 40. The song reached No. 2 on the singles charts and was kept out of the No. 1 spot by "Half Breed" by Cher, who later married Gregg Allman.

The soaring sound of Betts' guitar on "Ramblin' Man" reverberated in neighborhood bars around the country for decades, and the song underscored his knack for melodic hooks. "Ramblin' Man" was the Allmans' only Top Ten hit, but Betts' catchy 7½-minute instrumental composition "Jessica," recorded in 1972, became an FM radio staple.

Betts also wrote or co-wrote some of the band's other best-loved songs, including "Blue Sky" and "Southbound." In later years the group remained a successful touring act with Betts and Warren Haynes on guitar. Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks died in 2017.

After leaving the Allmans for good, Betts continued to play with his own group and lived in the Bradenton area with his wife, Donna.

Newbury Park school band seeks public's help finding or replacing stolen instruments

Sid Garcia Image

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- Students at a Newbury Park high school are asking the public for help after thieves stole nearly $25,000 worth of instruments after a concert this weekend.

The student musicians with Newbury Park Adventist Academy had just performed in Chula Vista Saturday night as part of a weekend music tour when someone broke into their rental truck at the La Quinta Inn.

School officials say between $20,000 to $25,000 worth of instruments were stolen.

"We had one set of bells that is particularly pricey to replace and a euphonium worth probably about $6,000," the school's principal Joel Albritton said.

Chula Vista police are investigating the theft.

Despite the bad outcome, Albritton hopes that students use this as a life lesson.

"We are most interested in making sure students understand that bad things are going to happen in their lives. The question is, how are they going to respond?"

His students have responded by reaching out to the community for help.

According to the school band's Instagram , students are seeking help finding instruments for their next performance but welcome other donations too.
