Vietnam Intro 12 Day Tour

Vietnam Intro 12 Day

The Vietnam intro 12 day tour was an amazing way to see Vietnam! The itinerary had the perfect balance of activists, free time and authentic experiences. My favourite parts were the homestay in the Mekong delta and Hoi An. Will was a great tour guide, thank you 😊

Vietnam Express Northbound

I was disappointed at the lack of options for daily excursions and would have preferred a more detailed itinerary and information regarding the included excursions. Overall, the guide was very helpful in helping us plan our own excursions and trying to accommodate everyone on the tour. I would not recommend this tour if you don't like being on a bus for multiple hours each day.

10 Days in Vietnam From South to North

We enjoyed the Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An legs. Unfortunately on the day we were to fly to Hanoi my wife had a fall and broke her wrist, resulting in surgery and 3 nights in the Pacific Hospital. Hoi An Express were good in rearranging accommodation and internal flight so we managed to fly home on time. On the accident a contributing factor was the aesthetically pleasing but impractical/ dangerous design of the rooms at Almanity resort. Having tried to put us in a loft room (bed up steep stairs and the single bathroom downstairs. We are 70yo!) our "upgrade" was to a nicer single level room but with the bed on a completely unnecessary 30cm high highly polished and creaky wooden "plinth", off which my wife fell at 4.30 am trying to get to the bathroom. Lovely resort, stupid room design. The hotel in HCMC (Eastin) was very nice but it would be preferable to be closer to District 1 given we selected the 5* upgrade.

Northern Vietnam Odyssey Tour 6-Day Tour

Northern Vietnam Odyssey Tour 6-Day

Overall we had a really good experience on our 6 day tour in Vietnam. We did the tour that started in Hanoi went to sapa for 1 night and a halong bay cruise for a night. We were a family of 3 with a 6 year old for reference. We chose the 3 star hotels. Danny organized everything and was really helpful, friendly, and easy to communicate with via WhatsApp. We were expecting/hoping to be with a group but when we arrived found out it was just our family. It would have been nice to get to know some other people and have meals with other people, etc. So what happened, is transportation showed up at the designated time each day and took us to the next place, where they introduced us to the tour guide. The transportation was always in a 12 person van with other people but the other people got dropped off at different places. The tour guide we had in sapa was amazing and it was basically a 2 day private tour just for our family. Sapa was amazing and I would have liked to stay longer, especially given that it took over 5 hours to get there. The halong bay cruise was also amazing! We liked Hanoi, but the city tour wasn’t appropriate for a full day with a child, so we left after lunch (we arranged this ahead of time). All in all, it was great, but a little too much traveling each day. We were in a different hotel every single day and had to be up and doing stuff between 7-8 every day. It would have been nice to have two days in a place or a chance to sleep in and lounge a day. The hotels were fine but nothing special. Overall it was a great way to see 3 different parts of Vietnam in less than a week without having to do any planning.

Extremely well organised, everything went exactly as planned. There were some days when there were too many activities organised. Would definitely do another tour with this company.

This tour was fantastic! So many great activities and places packed in without any of the effort of planning. Our guide Andrew handled everything and made us feel at ease from the second we landed. I had so much fun on this tour and would definitely recommend it.

7 Days Discovery Central of Vietnam Tour

7 Days Discovery Central of Vietnam

I really enjoyed my trip. Our guide was very friendly and accommodating. Everywhere we stopped to eat was good. My only complaints were with the first hotel in Da Nang, which had a lot of insects, and the restaurant bathrooms of some of the places we stopped to eat. It was during the New Year holiday so options for restaurants were a bit limited. Other than that, great trip, beautiful country, friendly people everywhere.

What people love about Vietnam Tours in September

The trip was fantastic. Vietnam has become one of my favourite places in the world! Our tour guide Bobby made the trip for me as he was so entertaining, enthusiastic and hilarious. He was so knowledgeable about the culture and history of Vietnam which meant that the group learnt a lot. I can't wait to come back to Vietnam in the future!
The itinerary was well-chosen, and the guide was experienced and helpful. I had a general impression of the country, with its highlights . A positive experience overall.
Was a great experience! Thank you

The northern terrace rice fields are vividly yellow at its harvesting season and the smooth sandy beaches are less crowded, which are the main draws in September. The month is shoulder travel season, you also can expect super saved hotel deals. Read on as we will show you the best places to visit in this month.

The Northern Delta of Vietnam in September has a daily average temperature of 82°F (28°C). Toward the end of month, the temperature is cooler than the beginning, and the rainfall becomes less frequent. In Hanoi, you can expect the breeze and golden rays of the sun, which is a bit chilly in the morning.

The temperature in the northern mountainous region in September fluctuates between 77°F (25°C) during the day. It is cold at night and near morning about 62°F (17°C). This month has less rain than August, and rains often happen at night. Thanks to the ideal weather conditions of the autumn, late September is a particularly fantastic time to visit endless northern golden rice fields.

Central Vietnam stretches from Quang Binh, Hue, Danang, Hoi An to Nha Trang, Dalat, Mui Ne with many other beautiful destinations lying among these points. The regional average temperature in September ranges from 75°F (24°C) to 90°F (32°C), dropping a little in late September. The Central of Vietnam in September may experience increasing rain and minor storms toward the end of this month. You had better see the weather forecast before departure to prepare for the alternative plan. The most promising destination will be Mui Ne, where the rain is significantly less than other places of the region.

Southern Vietnam in September sees a similar picture like August. The temperature is consistently under 88°F (31°C), but the rain can make you feel better. The showers happen very quickly, when the sun is bright again even before you take out your umbrella. You can still expect plenty of dry and bright daylight hours in Ho Chi Minh city and Mekong Delta. Because the Mekong delta is covered with a maze of river, this flooding season surprisingly makes it a beautiful time to discover and suitable for boat trips.

Travel tip: Travel to Vietnam in September, you should wear some thin layer clothes. And in case the temperature drops at night, you can take a long dress. Because of rainfall, take with you rain gear, especially if you want to visit the central part.

September is the low travel season, when student summer holidays end, they and their families return to everyday life. Beaches and resorts will see fewer people. Thus, you can enjoy more tranquillity at the tourist attractions, with no longer queuing. Whether you are a nature lover, city life seeker, or even a relaxation-bound traveller, visiting Vietnam in September opens countless options for you.

The exceptions are Vietnam Independence Day and Mid-autumn Festival. Popular attractions in major cities like Hanoi, Danang, Ho Chi Minh, especially the historical sites may be more crowded than usual. If the holidays fall on weekends, the city dwellers can take side trips to beaches or return to their birth hometown.

As a result, flights and hotels give out many promotions. You can visit Vietnam with good deals if reservations are well made in advance.

3. Places to visit in Vietnam in September

In September, the North welcomes you with cool autumn breeze, while the Central will have rain at times but retains its tranquillity, and the South is idyllic with a fresh atmosphere. Depending on your travel preferences, you can choose the places to visit. We suggest a few ideal destinations for you.

During this month, the rice in Mu Cang Chai turns from yellow-green to golden colour which is the signal of harvesting time. The dreamy photogenic rice terraces will be splendid to behold, especially for photographers. Scattered on the belly of the hill are minority villages, where you can get many glimpses of Hmong people’s rural life. You can plan a trekking trip at La Pan Tan's golden mountain, conquer the Khau Pha pass, or visit Lim Mong village.  Definitely, this is one of the most stunning postcard landscapes you shouldn’t miss.

mu cang chai vietnam in september

For majestic limestone landscapes in Vietnam, Halong Bay is always the first choice. However, in rainy and late typhoon season like September, Ninh Ninh is the perfect karst alternative. This idyllic destination offers you an ideal combo of biking, hiking and boating to see the amazingly magnificent scenery of golden rice paddies from different angles. What could be more exciting than taking a sampan through caves in Trang An complex? You may like cycling along rural paths in Tam Coc or staying overnight at a homestay in Van Long nature reserve area and learn embroidery under structure of local handicraftman.

Sapa in September has very little rainfall and away from hot air. Like Mu Cang Chai, Sapa is also a paradise for hiking from moderate to challenging. Hiking in Sapa, you can follow the routes featuring amazing terraced fields, mountain villages and ethnic minority culture to discover the green rice terraces turning yellow. The yellow of ripe rice fields shall make you feel overwhelmingly beautiful. It is best to spend a night at a homestay to get away from the hustle and bustle, and a chance to interact with friendly local people and experience the slow-paced life. You can spend 2–3 nights for leisure and hikes exploring the area.

The weather of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, in September is neither too cold nor too hot, which is a really iconic presentation of northern autumn. Many city streets like Phan Dinh Phung, Tran Phu, Hoang  Dieu are elegantly gilded with yellow leaves and light sunshine. You will feel the passionate smell, creating pleasant comfort, because of the milk flowers blooming. Taking a leisurely stroll around Hoan Kiem lake, then Hanoi Old Quarter will be a perfect choice, whereas you can taste authentic local cusines.

If your trip is on September 2nd (Vietnam National Independence Day), you will see the city celebrating this occasion with a large parade in Ba Dinh square, and many great performances taking place in a few days.

hanoi vietnam in september

This is the off-peak season in Lan Ha Bay and Halong Bay for both local and international tourists so you can easily find some deals when booking Lan Ha Bay cruises. Fewer tourists also means that you get better services and fully enjoy the breathtaking view of the bay. The cool breeze and comfortable weather is suitable for swimming and kayaking. Participating in activities like visiting local villages, island’s caves is also interesting.

Da Nang is a beautiful coastal city with stunning beaches and breathtaking scenery. Visit Danang in September, you can expect many rainy days and strong winds. The rainfall level starts increasing from September to October, thus the weather is much cooler. You had better check the weather forecast to plan your trip. There will be fewer tourists, therefore, hotels and restaurants give better services. If you want to travel on a budget, this is an ideal time, when you can still sunbathe, swim in the cool water, enjoy the cool breeze and lie on the white sand. Best beaches to enjoy are romantic Non Nuoc Beach, My Khe Beach, Son Tra Peninsula.

da nang vietnam in september

Unlike Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, is small and provincial in feel. It provides a fascinating glimpse into what port life was in 18th century Vietnam. A Hoi An tour in September will be less affected by downpour in the afternoon. You had better plan a flexible itinerary to escape the rains, such as visit historical sites, go to a local market, have a cup of Vietnamese coffee or join in a cooking class. Stroll in the old town, you can buy many colourful souvenirs, and don't miss a quick tailor-made ao dai.

hoi an vietnam in september

Mui Ne weather in September is quite favourable for tourism. At this time, the weather is somewhat cooler compared to the summer months. Sand dunes reduce their heat so activities are more pleasant. However, sometimes tourists may encounter the scattered minor rains, which may change your schedule a bit. While few tourists choose to stay in the centre, many tourists prefer resorts with swimming pools and private beaches.

Nature bestows Quy Nhon not only with beautiful, clear and pristine beaches, but the city also has many cultural and historical tourist attractions, impressive architecture and amusement parks. Quy Nhon in September experiences the change from the dry season to the rainy season in Quy Nhon. This is considered the most suitable time to travel to Quy Nhon because the weather in Quy Nhon at this time is sunny, the sky is clear and the sea is calm, and there is usually a cool breeze. It is ideal for participating in various outdoor activities and exploring several Quy Nhon’s islands.

quy nhon vietnam in september

The Mekong Delta in September has a unique natural beauty that is hard to find anywhere else. Because there is plenty of rain, the water level in rivers and fields rises thrivingly, creating the annual water rising season, which occurs from September to November. You may consider a visit to An Giang province. The coconut trees mingle well with the peaceful rural villages, drawing an idyllic picture. By boat and sampan, you can explore the simple life, and sample the fresh tropical fruits from orchards. It is also perfect for those who love to take part in activities like visiting a floating market, spreading fishing nets with instruction from locals.

Since then, every year, across the country, and especially in Ba Dinh square of Hanoi, there are big parades and special events to celebrate this national day.

Mid-autumn Festival (17/9/2024)

Vietnam's Mid-Autumn Festival is held on August 15th of the lunar calendar (always a full moon day) making the monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival celebrations the largest of the year. To prepare for the festival, families buy mooncakes, pomelos and other treats. On the night of the festival, Vietnamese children will carry lit lanterns in parades and wear costumes for lion dances. Joining in celebrating activities with local people would be an unforgettable moment for you. In Hanoi, Hang Ma street is the most visited place while in Ho Chi Minh city, people flock to Nguyen Hue walking streets and Cho Lon area.

Hi Cindy, Da Lat often experiences a lot of showers in September. There may be also floods. However, this kind of weather generates mist and pleasant atmosphere, and many kind of flowers, which are favored by many visitors. If you discover Da Lat by motorbike, it's not safe to drive on some roads. Recommend you take a car transfer. Best regards,

Vietnam in September: Everything You Need to Know

Weather & Best Places to Visit in Vietnam in September

Rachel Tran

Is Vietnam a good place to visit in September? Where to visit in Vietnam in September?

September is an average month to plan a visit to Vietnam, especially to the Central and Southern destinations. Weather conditions in the North, however, slowly improve towards the end of the month with less rainfall expected. There is still a high possibility of storms in the coastline of Vietnam in September .

In a nutshell:

  • North Vietnam: improving weather conditions, decreasing heat and humidity. Average temperature: 28°C.
  • Central Vietnam: increasing rainfall, high possibility of storms. Average temperature: 28°C.
  • South Vietnam: decreasing rainfall. Average temperature: 28°C.

I. Vietnam’s weather in September

Vietnam weather in September

1. In North Vietnam

Summer approaches its end and improves weather conditions in North Vietnam in September. It might be hot and humid during the first half of September, while the second half is cooler and drier. As Sapa expects less rain, trekking is again possible in this magnificent mountainous area. Mu Cang Chai’s vast paddy fields will turn to a stunning bright golden color in late September.

2. In Central Vietnam

Rain will be increasing in all parts of Central Vietnam, while temperatures slightly drop to an average of 28°C. Hoi An, Hue and Nha Trang see an increase in rain towards the end of the month. The highlands of Dalat will be very wet, making trekking impossible, while Phong Nha caves might even close due to flooding.

3. In South Vietnam

Summer heat still lingers in the South, keeping temperatures around an average of 28°C. The region remains wet although rain will decrease towards the end of the month.

II. Events and Festivals in Vietnam in September

Events and festivals in Vietnam in September

September the 2nd is Vietnamese Independence Day. The national holiday is celebrated with national flags hung on the streets and occasionally a fireworks display in the evening. The young generation will seize this opportunity to visit their family in the countryside or travel around the country. Some destinations might be overcrowded if the national holiday lasts a few days (when accompanied with weekends).

Some other cultural festivals fall in September, including the Mid-Autumn Festival and Ghost Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival is most enjoyed by kids who look forward to joyful lion dances, sweet mooncakes and a feast of fruits. Ghost Festival, on the other hand, honors the ancestors and the dead by offering them food and flowers. Both festivals take place according to the lunar calendar; Mid-Autumn falls on the 15th of August and Ghost Festival the 15th of July.

III. Best Places to Visit in Vietnam in September

1. in north vietnam.

Places to visit in the north Vietnam in September - Ha Giang

  • Mu Cang Chai

Terraced paddy fields in Mu Cang Chai will be at their best during September. The vast paddy fields will turn to a bright golden color which glow under the sunbeams. This shows that the fields are ready to be harvested. You will also stumble upon H’Mong mothers working on the fields with a child held by a cloth on their backs. It’s the best place in Vietnam to snap some photos and get to know all about the H’Mong cultural identity.

September is the start of buckwheat flower season, which ends in December. Come in late September to see beds of white-and-pink flowers, blooming to their fullest on the mountains of Ha Giang. Although the festival is celebrated in October, there are plenty of fun activities to do: checking out golden terraced fields, joining the photo exhibition in Dong Van Geopark or shopping at the old market in Dong Van Town.

It’s safe to say that Hanoi is beautiful all year round. In September, you will be joining one of the most joyful Vietnam’s festivals in the year, either Ghost Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival is much more fun with mooncake stalls erected all around the city and lion dances parading in the Old Quarter . Mooncakes are absolutely delightful, but make sure you try some “Com” ( Cốm ), a unique Hanoi’s cuisine. It is basically green rice flakes made from unripe sticky rice, which gives off a very pleasant fragrance.

What to wear in North Vietnam in September:

Summer shirts, loose-fitting clothes, sunglasses are recommended. At an average of 28°C, you can mostly wear any light clothes. Wear hiking shoes if you wish to trek in Mu Cang Chai or Ha Giang.

Places to visit in the central Vietnam in September - Hue

As rain is inclined to increase and storms are expected, it’s not the most suitable time to visit Hue. Even though Hue is charming in the rain, it’s best to visit this ancient capital on sunny days. This imperial city is home to numerous palaces, tombs, parks and gardens built in the Nguyen Dynasty – the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam. Make sure you also check out Bach Ma National Park to see azaleas flowers blooming, and Truc Lam Bach Ma Zen Monastery for some quiet meditation time.

It might rain in the beautiful ancient town of Hoi An in September, so make sure you check the weather forecast in advance. This UNESCO-listed town perfectly preserves the relics of a busy trading history with Japanese, Chinese and even some Western countries. The mixed architecture, lantern-drifting river and mouth-watering Southern cuisines are the best Hoi An has to offer. Getting your clothes tailor-made is another must-try in Hoi An.

What to wear in Central Vietnam in September:

Bach ma national park.

If you have the chance to visit Hue, don’t “miss your appointment” with the Bach Ma National Park, one of the best places to visit in Vietnam . The mountain range that borders Thua Thien – Hue and Da Nang provinces is the home of an array of flora and fauna that boggles the mind and one of the most diverse nature reserves in Vietnam. At an altitude of 1,450m over sea level, this area can experience four seasons in a single day.

Bach Ma has been populated by resorts since the 1940s, and for a very good reason, as its natural beauty offers an amazing experience of rest and renewal. Most travelers, however, choose to book their accommodation in nearby Hue for better access to that city and its imperial citadel (another worthwhile visit).

Bach Ma National Park

After the COVID-19 pandemic, as one of the best places to visit in North Vietnam , Ninh Binh greeted over 3 million visitors in the first 10 months of 2022. A clean and cool autumn atmosphere suffuses the scenery, vibrant with green flora and golden ripe rice. You can leave the rat race behind and step into nature with a boat ride on Van Long Pond, a trek through Cuc Phuong National Park, or explore the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.

However, the “three caves” of Tam Coc and the two caves of Bich Dong is a delightful fairytale world and a must-see on Vietnam in September trip to Ninh Binh. These cave systems are only accessible by boat and adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and sizes. Their otherworldly beauty have earned them the epithet “the second most beautiful cave(s) under Southern skies”.

Hanoi and northern Vietnam

If you’re a fan of fall, you need to visit Hanoi during Vietnam in September. It’s no accident that this season has become a trademark of the capital, immortalized in songs, poems, and other artistic endeavors. The tree-lined streets are ready to cast rivulets of golden leaves down at the slightest brush of the wind. The crisp, chill air (“sweater weather”) invites you to cuddle up with your loved ones even as you travel.

Don’t forget to try cốm – pounded green rice wrapped in fragrant lotus leaves – and the many, many delightful treats that are derived from this “gift from the young rice” (as christened by writer Thạch Lam). From Hanoi, you should consider making your way to northern area where you can find many stunning golden color rice terrace fields which are in harvest season.

Mekong Delta

September is the most beautiful month of the year for a trip from Saigon to Mekong Delta . The average temperature stays stable at around 28C, and this is the “floating water” season, when water from upriver of the Mekong flows through “Vietnam’s granary” to deposit silt that makes the soil here ever more fertile and bring with it a glut of fresh, delicious shrimp and fish.

The best way to traverse the delta is by boat. You can take a luxury cruise down the Mekong River as you learn about its history and marvel at its beauty. You can also brave small wooden crafts that take you through the arcadian countryside and even melaleuca forests where the water is covered with plants and the sky is a thin ribbon above your head. Even with the dizzying speed of urbanization and man’s attempt to breach into Nature, this land retains its pristine beauty as its people live and thrive in harmony with all of Mother Earth’s creations.

What to do in Vietnam in September

In the north, with the rain easing up, the unbeaten tracks of Sapa are once again safe to trek through. Mu Cang Chai will enter its harvest season and its terraced rice fields will turn golden. A holiday on the beaches of Nha Trang is now out of the question given the poor weather, as are trips to the caves of Phong Nha – Ke Bang or hiking in the Central Highlands for the same reason. Urban areas are easier to navigate, however, if you always have your rain gear.

September Events & Holiday

Vietnam national day.

One of the few Vietnamese national holidays celebrated using the Gregorian calendar, September 2 is a remembrance of the same day in 1945. On this day. Emperor Bao Dai of the Nguyen Dynasty abdicated, ending 1050 years of feudal rule, and President Ho Chi Minh gave a speech announcing Vietnamese independence.

It’s an important holiday in modern Vietnam. The streets of Hanoi and other provinces and cities nationwide are all adorned in the red and golden hues of flags, flowers, posters, and banners.

Mid-Autumn Festival

This harvest festival is celebrated as a children’s holiday in Vietnam. Every full moon on the eighth lunar month, people lay out sweet feasts, moon-gaze, and enjoy golden brown mooncakes or snowy white. Many places organize street performances such as lion, qilin, and dragon dances. Children may parade through the cities and towns in masks resembling fictional characters, colorful paper lanterns in hand.

Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival

The fisherfolk of Do Son, Hai Phong province celebrate the Buffalo Fighting Festival beginning on the eighth or ninth day of the eighth lunar month every year. The custom is so ancient that there’s no single origin story for it, but most versions agree that the battle between buffalos ends with a sacrifice and an offer to some mythological or spiritual figure (usually a water goddess) in exchange for a successful, smooth-sailing year. Whichever village whose buffalo representative wins the battle and gets sacrificed to the Goddess will be particularly lucky, as are people who get to eat the cooked offerings.

The tradition of whale worshipping is still alive and well in Southern Vietnam. These majestic animals are often thought of as Lords and Ladies of the sea, guarding the fisherfolk against harm. Beached whales are given funeral rites and buried like humans. Many Southern locales have festivals for the whales, but one of the largest takes place in Can Thanh town, Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh city, on the 14th to 17th day of the eighth lunar month.

Vietnam in September: Weather and Event Guide

What weather to expect in September, what to do, what's on in Vietnam in September?

vietnam tour september

  • 1. Weather Overview
  • 2. Events in September
  • 3. What to expect
  • 4. Best destinations to visit in September

Weather Overview

In Vietnam, September signals a transition of seasons. In the Northern part, autumn starts to come, and rainfall starts to dwindle. In the Center and the South, the rain gets in its peak season with a high chance of storm or typhoon. However, it is still a good time to visit Vietnam and for good reasons.

September is also the time when student summer holiday ends, and families return to their everyday life, which means popular destinations will see fewer people. Whether you are a nature lover, a city hunter, a relaxation-bound traveler, visiting Vietnam in September will open countless options for you.

Temperature and humidity

The miserable typhoons and downpours in the previous month at least do some good by cooling off the heat for September. Hanoi’s temperature is down to 24-31°C low/high, but the humidity remains high at 80%. Northern mountain shares similar humidity but lower average at 17-27°C.

Meanwhile, with the southwest monsoon from the Eastern sea, the amount of rain in the Central region is enormous. This may affect your trip to the central beaches, so watch the forecast carefully.

Like August, September is still the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta, with a comfortable and consistent temperature of under 30°C but with 25 rain days. The good news is that the rain does not persist, and the next thing you know the sun is out and bright again, before you even take out your umbrella.

Events in September

vietnam tour september

Vietnam Independence Day

September 2nd is the most important event for Vietnam as a nation. On this day in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh had read the Declaration of Independence in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, marking the country's freedom from colonialism. Since then, every year, across the country, and especially in Ba Dinh square of Hanoi, there are big parades and special events to celebrate this national day.

Mid-autumn Festival

The actual day of the mid-autumn festival, also called Full Moon Festival, is August 15th of the lunar calendar. However, Vietnamese people always prepare for the festival more than a week in advance. Families will buy mooncakes, persimmons and other treats. On the night of the festivals, major cities' streets will be filled with children carrying lanterns, cellophane toys, or wearing a mini lion head to route for the actual lion dance performance. The most crowded area in Hanoi is around Hang Ma street in the Old Quarter. For Ho Chi Minh city, the major venue for celebration is Nguyen Hue walking street and Cho Lon area.

Buffalo fight festival - Do Son, Hai Phong

On August 9th of the lunar month (in the middle of September of the Gregorian calendar), Do Son, Hai Phong will host a buffalo fight festival. The two buffaloes will fight each other till one is down, and the last one standing becomes the race winner. The festival has remained for the last 1000 years, making it the representative of Do Son people.

What to expect

  • The Northern part, especially the Northwest, will start to witness the changing color of autumn
  • The Central provinces can experience heavy rain and storms in late September. Make sure to watch the weather forecast or prepare an alternative plan before depart
  • Beaches and resorts will see fewer people as the family holiday period has ended
  • During Vietnam Independence Day and Mid-autumn Festival, major cities like Hanoi, Danang, Ho Chi Minh or historical sites will be more crowded than usual. If the holiday is extended into a long weekend, the city becomes deserted once again as dwellers take side trips or return to their countryside for family visits.

Best destinations to visit in September

In September, each region of Vietnam shows itself in a different light. The North welcomes you with cool autumn breeze, the Central will have torrential rain at times but retains its tranquility, and the South is idyllic with fresh air. Depending on your travel preferences, you can choose the best places to visit.

vietnam tour september

Enjoy the poetic early autumn in Hanoi

Hanoi in September is the iconic presentation of Northern autumn. The weather is just perfect, neither too cold nor too hot. You will easily find autumn color in Hoan Kiem lake, with rows of trees shining on the water surface and the locals leisurely walking around. The capital in September is gilded with light sun and yellow leaves. You can stroll under those golden roofs on Phan Dinh Phung, Tran Phu, Hoang Dieu street or around the West Lake area.

Explore the unspoiled Northwest Mountains

The Northwest of Vietnam is the most beautiful, with postcard landscapes of endlessly yellow terraced fields. You can plan a trekking tour at Hoang Su Phi's golden mountain, Pu Luong reserves, Mu Cang Chai valley, conquer the Khau Pha pass, or visit the ancient and remote town in Dong Van.

Feel the tranquility of Danang

Traveling to Da Nang in September, you can experience the quietness of an otherwise bustling beach city. At this time, Da Nang has started to enter the rain season, but you just have to encounter some small drizzles, the possibility of rain also falls at about 20%.

Because of the scanty numbers of visitors, especially domestic tourists, you can have the chance to enjoy a calm and tranquil Danang that not many get to see. No long queue for a cable car to reach Ba Na hill, a quiet Son Tra peninsula and a romantic walk along My Khe beach - you will see the best of Danang in September.

Enjoy the peaceful river delta of An Giang

You may consider a visit to the Mekong Delta region, such as An Giang province. It is the chance to mingle with the peaceful nature, explore the simple life, and enjoy river specialties. September is right at the peak of the water rising season, making it perfect for those who want to take part in activities such as spreading fishing nets, visiting the floating markets, or sampling tropical fruits fresh from the orchards.

There are many places to visit in An Giang, but the most recommended are Nuoc Troi Lake in An Phu district, Ta Pa hill in Tri Ton district, and Tra Su tea tree forest in Tinh Bien district. The poetic and charming scenery of the green palmyra palms or the yellow of ripe rice fields shall make you feel overwhelmed. The feeling of floating on the small boat between 850ha of enormous tea trees, underneath is the green water-fern covered all the river surface, breathing in the fresh air will bring visitors unforgettable experiences.

Vietnam in September - Weather, Events and Festivals, Best Places To Visit

Vietnam in September is a blend of autumn and monsoon. During this time, it is neither too hot nor too cold. It is one of the peak times to visit North Vietnam and the Central Highlands for hiking and other recreational activities. As it comes under the off-season, there are fewer crowds, and you can enjoy affordable bookings.  Let us know more about the weather in Vietnam.

Weather in Vietnam in September

September marks an end to the scorching heat and welcomes autumn in Vietnam. In September, this South-Eastern Peninsula is moderately affected by the Southeast Monsoon, leading to wet weather in Central Vietnam and slightly lesser downpours in South Vietnam and North Vietnam, making highlands worth visiting. The average temperature of Vietnam remains around 24°C this autumn month, and the average humidity level is 94%.

Northern Mountain Region - Sapa, Ha Giang, Bac Ha, Mu Cang Chai, Haiphong

September is monsoon month in the northern mountain region; hence, trekking is open once again in SaPa. September is a peak month to visit SaPa and areas around Mu Cang Chai. This is the month when golden rice crops sway under light showers of rain and are ready for harvesting. Sun appears equally, and the weather is not bad.

North Vietnam - Hanoi, Halong Bay, Cuc Phuong, Mai Chau & Ninh Binh

By September, North Vietnam is at the end of the summer monsoon phase with an average temperature of 28°C. Outdoors have plenty of hot weather, which tends to decrease by the end of the month. Hanoi and Halong Bay are great to explore under the soothing weather.

Central Vietnam - Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Dalat, Quy Nhon & Nha Trang

After good sunshine beach time in August, Central Vietnam is set to experience a weather change in September. Hoi An, Hue, and Nha Trang have 28°C average temperatures with moderate amounts of rainfall. Stormy weather is possible towards the end of September. Dalat and Central Highlands are very wet, making trekking and other outdoor activities inadvisable, while Pha Nha Ke Bang may get floods. Central Vietnam is prone to typhoons in autumn.

South Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City, The Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc and Con Dao, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Ho Tram & Long Hai

During September, rains affect South Vietnam less than in previous monsoon months, with an average temperature of 28°C. Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta are affected by daily afternoon showers, but you can expect plenty of daylight hours for outdoor activities. September is also the month of Green Turtle's first hatchlings on Con Dao island.

Events and Festivals in Vietnam in September

vietnam national day

Vietnam celebrates one of the most significant holidays - Vietnam National Day on September 2. Back in 1945, Vietnam’s revolutionary leader, Ho Chi Minh, declared Vietnam’s independence on this day. National Day in Vietnam holds multiple contests, cultural events, boat races on Hoan Kiem Lake, and extravagant fireworks at Ba Dinh Square. Natives decorate with the national flag on the top of houses and buildings and in the streets; red and yellow colors sway with pride along with beautiful flower beds. A big parade, the charm of the day, is held at Ba Dinh Square in front of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, which is then followed by a fireworks display.

wandering soul day

One of the major festivals of Vietnam is Wandering Soul Day, or Trang Nguyen, which is celebrated on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month. This cultural festival, which is also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival and Cold Food Festival (Tet Han Thuc), holds national importance. Just like in many mythologies, Vietnam Mythology says that this is the day when the gate of hell is set to open, and spirits wander on the land. The Vietnamese consider this day a negative time for new beginnings; they avoid marriages, major contracts, and new projects. But prioritize forgiveness and charity.

lanterns

The spectacular night view on the 14th night of every month in Hoi An, Vietnam, is worth experiencing as the city celebrates the festival of lights. Lighting lanterns are considered to be a good luck and fortune charm in Vietnam. Hoi An Lantern festival is considered to be an incredible moment to follow the rituals of worshipping deceased relatives. The festival not only brings closeness and happiness but is a wise method to save electricity.

mid autumn festival

Tet Trung Thu is the mid-autumn festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month every year. This festival is mainly for children to engage in various cultural dances and arts and is also known as the festival of harvesting crops. The history of celebrating the festival is related to Emperor Duong Minh Hoang’s visit to the moon via Dien Phap Thien’s magic. The Emperor enjoyed the heavenly atmosphere and performances by the fairies on the moon. After he came back to Earth, he decided to celebrate the 15th day of the 8th lunar month under the moon and decorate houses and streets with lanterns.

do son buffalo fighting

Do Son District in Haiphong celebrates one of the unique festivals of Vietnam, ‘Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival’ on the 9th day of the 8th lunar month while its preparations start from the 5th or 6th lunar month. This festival is associated with the Water Goddess and Tutelary God-worshipping, sacrificial ceremony towards Diem Tuoc God, Buffalo Sacrificing, and showcasing bravery.

Vietnamese celebrate the Lam Kinh Festival on the 22nd day of the 8th lunar month in Tho Xuan District. Lam Kinh has many mausoleums and tombs, out of which King Le Loi’s Temple holds utter importance. People follow incense offering rites and other rituals to pay homage to the national heroes in King Le Temple. The tourists can be a part of traditional folk games and dances, Ly Lien singing, and enjoy the performance of bronze drums. There are several homemade products to buy, like bee’s honey, aloeswood, cinnamon, and mushrooms.

Places to Visit in Vietnam in September

  • September almost marks an end to beach time and reopens the opportunity for hiking and other recreational activities in North Vietnam, especially in Hanoi, Sapa, and Mu Cang Chai. The latter half of the month is suitable for Halong Bay as well. Overall, it is a picturesque month in rural areas of Vietnam.
  • In Hanoi, the ‘milk flower’ blossoms and brims the streets with its unique scent. Tourists can plan to visit Hanoi on the National Day of Vietnam to witness beautiful flower beds decorated on the streets along with colorful signboards.
  • On a public holiday, natives hit the coastal cities, leaving Hanoi and Saigon in a peaceful environment. This is the golden time to explore the culture and history of Vietnam closely.
  • Although September attracts foreign tourists to North Vietnam and some parts of South Vietnam, Central Vietnam isn’t very crowded, so you can expect low airfares and low prices of hotels and accommodations.

Vietnam offers bonnie coastlines, historical architectural sites, exotic adventure activities, air-conditioned modern museums, flowering fields, mouth-watering foods, and lively markets. Where one major place is known for its art, another is an attraction point for its nightlife, all-in-all Vietnam wisely preserves its culture. September is a good-to-go time to North Vietnam highlands, while later September is suitable for South Vietnam, especially the Mekong Delta. Below is the list of the cities and places from North Vietnam to South Vietnam to visit in September.

sapa

  • Other major attractions include Fairy Cave, Silver Waterfalls, Tram Ton Pass, Muong Hoa Valley, and Muong Khuong Bird Market.

2. Mai Chau

mai chau

  • Other major attractions include Go Lao Waterfall, Chieu Cave, and Thung Ke Pass Flagpole.

3. Mu Cang Chai

mu cang chai

Mu Cang Chai is a northwest mountainous rural district in Vietnam that creates jaw-dropping scenery in September. You will see golden rice crops swaying proudly, ready to harvest. This is the best time to know the lifestyle of Mong Ethnic farmers. Khau Pha Pass, called ‘Sky’s Horn’ develops magnificent scenery. There are other small villages in the city to visit to adore the beauty of paddy farming and to experience their local culture by the homestay. Visit to Mu Cang Chai is incomplete without visiting two of its breathtaking waterfalls - Mo and Phu Nu waterfalls. Mu Cang Chai has its own market, too.

  • Other major attractions include Ba Nha Bridge, Mam Xoi Hill, and Kim Noi Village.

4. Ninh Binh

ninh binh

Located in North Vietnam, Ninh Binh Province is famous for its Karst Landscape in Tam Coc. August is one of the best seasons to visit Ninh Binh because it is the harvest season. A boat can be hired to see the limestone cliffs in Tam Coc. A two-hour excursion takes you through three natural caves - Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba. A journey of about five hundred steps to the ancient temple on a hilltop - Hang Mua, will lead to a panoramic view from Tam Coc.

  • Other major attractions include Hoa Lu, Trang An, Phat Diem Cathedral, and Ken Gha.

5. Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province

national park

In late September, biodiversity was great in Cuc Phuong National Park, located in Ninh Binh Province. You can trek through a grass jungle and observe ancient trees and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Vietnam’s oldest national park includes the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, where Monkeys, Langurs, and Gibbons were rescued and kept, and the Turtle Conservation Centre. There is a Cave of Prehistoric Man where centuries-old skeletons and tools are preserved. Families must not miss a trip to the national park. Do not forget to apply mosquito repellent and wear good hiking shoes.

hanoi

Hanoi is the only capital of a country which isn't its largest city. The capital of Vietnam - Hanoi, is a place for every traveler. September is a peak month to explore Hanoi and to witness the blooming of ‘Milk Flower’ or Alstonia scholars. I definitely taste ‘Com’ - a green-colored rice flake that originates from Vong Village.

  • Other major attractions include Hanoi Train Street, Cau Giay Park, Dong Xuan Market, Rose Park, Smiley Ville, Lotte Observation Deck, Long Bien Bridge, Ba Vi National Park, and Perfume Pagoda.

7. Halong Bay

halong bay

Halong Bay, located in North Vietnam, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there’s much to explore and spend a soothing September here. The weather starts to cool down, but the average temperature remains around 30 degrees, so it isn’t a great time to rejuvenate and get tanned on beaches and islands. Nevertheless, travelers can go for a cruise, swimming, or cooking classes. It is a good month for kayaking and snorkeling. There are caves to explore and floating villages to visit. Halong City (divided into East HaLong - Hon Gai and West HaLong - Bai Chay) in the North part of Halong Bay has an artificial beach, 'Bai Chay Beach,’ and a Bai Chai Market to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, gifts or souvenirs.

  • Other major attractions include HaLong Queen Cable Car, Sun World Halong Complex, Stacking Rocks, Tuan Chau Island, and Cannon Fort.

8. Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay

cat ba

Cat Ba Island is one of the most amazing and highly visited Islands connected to HaLong Bay. September is one of the less crowded months in Cat Ba Island and the best to visit if you love monsoon; the average temperature is around 31˚C. Although there are frequent and short-lasting rains in September, cancellation of voyages is rare. Also, in September, tourists can enjoy the splendid scenery at low prices.

  • Other major attractions include Dinh Lagu Lam, Cat Ba Archipelago, and Monkey Island.

9. Nha Trang

nha trang

Nha Trang is located in Central Vietnam and is great to visit in September to enjoy various water sports at Monkey Island, and Hon Tre Island and have relaxing hours at Thap Ba Hot Spring. You can spend a couple of hours at Hon Ba Mountain and worship in the aesthetically pleasing Long Son Pagoda (White Buddha Pagoda) and Ponagar Tower. There is Tri Nguyen Aquarium Vinpearl Waterpark for kids to enjoy. Roam at night in Nha Trang Night Market to buy food or clothes; you can get gifts, souvenirs, and embroidered items from street shops.

  • Other major attractions include Vinpearl Cable Car, YangBa Waterfall, and Ba Ho Waterfall Cliff Jumping.

10. Phu Quoc Island

phu quoc

Phu Quoc Island lies in Southwest Vietnam, apart from the mainland. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam, with its own international airport. By mid-September, the summer season replaces monsoon, giving out bright sunshine and perfect weather for beaches. Phu Quoc is one of the best places to visit in September.

  • Other major attractions include Ham Ninh Fishing Village, Vinpearl Safari, Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park, Trúc Lam Ho Quoc Zen Monastery, and Phu Quoc National Park.

11. Phan Thiet - Mui Ne

mui ne

To the south of Vietnam lies a coastal port area, ‘Phan Thiet,’ which is, again, one of the best places to visit in September. It is divided between the city center and the famous Mui Ne Beach and has plenty of accommodations. Right from tropical forests to mesmerizing beaches to ancient architecture, Phan Thiet has some or other engaging parts for every traveler.

Mui Ne Beach has clean and rock-free water, which makes it suitable for swimming, jet skiing, banana riding, surfing, and kayaking. There are some outlets that sell local handicrafts, jewelry, and beachwear. Try the seafood here, which is served with Vietnam’s famous fish sauce.

  • Other major attractions include Mui Ne Fishing Village, Cham Tower, Ta Chi Pagoda, and Ganh Beach.

The best times in the year to visit Vietnam

Joe Bindloss

Feb 22, 2024 • 5 min read

vietnam tour september

Pick the right time for your visit to Vietnam with this seasonal guide © golero / Getty Images

Vietnam serves up a generous dose of Southeast Asian magic at any time of year, but some seasons are easier for travelers than others.

A lot depends on what you are looking for from your trip – if it's time on the beach on the central coast, you probably want to stick to the drier months from February to June, before the peak summer crowds arrive; if you're here to go trekking in the highlands, October to March is the optimum season.

It's important to be aware that the weather can vary widely as you travel around Vietnam. The country spans 1650km (1025 miles) from north to south, taking in tall mountains in the north and flat, tropical wetlands in the Mekong Delta . In the north, it can be positively chilly in winter; from December to February, the highlands around Sapa can see snow while the Delta basks at 25°C (77°F).

To help you plan a perfect trip, here's our guide on the best times to visit Vietnam.

A woman sits on a swing connected to a palm tree on a beautiful beach

July and August are the top months for beach lovers

The hot, sticky high season from July to August is the busiest time of year to visit Vietnam, coinciding with favorable beach weather on the central coast. Demand for flights soars, and prices for accommodations can increase by as much as 50% in resort areas such as Danang and Nha Trang . Book flights and hotels well in advance and expect crowds on the sand at all the popular resorts.

The rest of the country is warm and humid, and sunny days are punctuated by spectacular summer monsoon downpours and even the odd typhoon on the coast. This is a poor time of year for visiting the north, as trekking trails turn into quagmires, and Hanoi and Halong Bay are drenched by heavy showers. On the festival calendar, Trung Nguyen (Wandering Souls Day, also known as Vu Lan) in August sees huge spreads of food left out for the spirits.

Dancing performers move through the streets of Ho Chi Minh City during the lunar new year

December to March is the season to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)

Winter in Vietnam tends to be drier and cooler than the sticky summer, and the weather can be downright chilly in the north, particularly at higher elevations. However, this is the perfect time to explore Vietnam's characterful northern and southern capitals, with manageable temperatures and low humidity taking the sting out of exploring Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on foot.

If you want to see more of the country, this is also a great time to head out to the Mekong Delta and the island of Phu Quoc , with warm (not scorching) temperatures and clear skies. As April approaches, however, the mercury starts to climb to uncomfortable levels down south.

Another obstacle to easy travel is the Tet festival – officially, Tet Nguyen Dan – marking the Vietnamese lunar New Year, in late January or early February. The whole country is on the move and prices for transport and hotels shoot skywards.

In December, the biennial Flower Festival brings fragrant blooms, pageants, wine and music to Dalat , while Buon Ma Thuot's annual coffee festival in March attracts lovers of a good brew. Christmas Day – known in Vietnam as Le Giang Sinh – is a big deal for the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City.

Colorful fireworks illuminate the night sky above the Han River in Danang, Vietnam.

Visit from April to June and September to November to avoid the crowds

The low season in Vietnam coincides with the transition from the cool, dry winter to the hot, humid summer and vice versa. From April to June and from September to November, the weather is often unsettled but rarely extreme. You may get days of glorious sunshine, but there will also be days of rain, so pack for both dry and wet weather.

These transition periods are good times to avoid crowds at the sights, save money and explore the whole country, as the weather is not notably awful anywhere. The October to November window is particularly favorable for exploring the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay (and its calmer and less commercial neighbor, Bai Tu Long Bay ), with more dry days than wet days and mild temperatures.

There are some good festivals too. Held in Hue in April, May or June, the biennial Hue Festival fills the city's historic citadel with color, music and lights, while the Nha Trang Sea Festival brings a similar party mood to Nha Trang every second June. Vietnamese Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha with extravagant street processions in May for Phat Dan – best experienced in Ninh Binh or Ho Chi Minh City. Pyrotechnics enthusiasts of all kinds gather in Danang in June (or sometimes July) for the explosive Danang Fireworks Festival.

In the pre-winter season, aim to be in Hanoi on September 2, as Vietnam National Day brings energetic rallies and fireworks to Ba Dinh Square and boat races to Hoan Kiem Lake . Tasty festival foods appear everywhere for Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or October, while dragon boats race on the waterways of the Mekong Delta for the Khmer Ok Om Bok Festival in October or November.

Visiting Vietnam during the typhoon season

Technically, the typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific runs from May to November, but in Vietnam, the biggest risk of storms is from August to September. The country sees four to six typhoons in an average year, marked by heavy rain and strong winds. Occasional severe storms lead to flooding and disruption to transport, particularly by air and sea.

The areas most affected by typhoons are the southern coast and the far north coast (including Halong Bay). The weather tends to be most severe near the shore – inland, you may just get heavy rain and the odd power cut. This is a time to be cautious but not paranoid – monitor weather reports and prioritize land-based activities over boat trips, beaches, and diving.

Vietnamese food is where it’s at.

Wherever we travel, it’s the flavours we remember best. A crusty bánh mì or streetside pho, seafood cù lao hotpots and (scarily addictive) coffee with condensed milk. Vietnam tours are tasty, plain and simple. We won’t just drop you in Halong Bay and call it a day. Our local leaders will introduce you to rice farmers in Sapa and fishermen on the Mekong Delta. They’ll guide you through the Cu Chi Tunnels, take you to the best beaches and on a street food crawl through Ho Chi Minh City. Our stomach’s rumbling already...

History and government, early history.

Vietnam has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest that structured societies existed as early as the 1st millennium BC. Early society was mostly feudal and agriculture-based, with various dynasties overseeing different parts of Vietnam until the Chinese invasion of 111 BC, which saw the societies of Vietnam and China intertwined. Various Chinese dynasties dominated the area for hundreds of years, although revolts finally led to Vietnam gaining self-autonomy in 905. By 938, this period of Chinese imperial domination came to a close and Vietnam entered into an age of independence.

Recent history

During the 19th century, Vietnam came under the influence of French colonisers, who assumed control of Vietnam after the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885. French Indochina was formed in 1887, and included parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and, later on, Laos. Although the French managed to suppress internal movements towards independence for many years, their control was finally relinquished in 1954 when Vietnamese forces overcame the French during the first Indochina War. Following this war, Vietnam was divided, with separate forces ruling the north (led by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with support from the United States).

The second Indochina War created wide-scale devastation and turmoil for the people of Vietnam, leading to mass migration to other parts of the world as asylum seekers tried to escape the conflict. More recently, Vietnam has benefited from the free market economy set up in 1986. Vietnam's economy continues to expand, with agriculture and industry providing the backbone and the tourism sector also contributing. Although many Vietnamese people live below the poverty line, there have been widespread improvements in literacy and health, which hopefully will continue to improve in the future.

Geography and environment

Occupying a long, thin part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam shares borders with China , Laos and Cambodia . Much of Vietnam's terrain is mountainous, particularly the north and central highland regions. Although people still choose to live in the densely forested highland regions, most of Vietnam's population is concentrated in the cities of the low-lying areas, where infrastructure is more easily built and the land is fertile. One of the 12 great rivers of the world, the Mekong, runs through Vietnam and has been responsible for wide-scale flooding. A system of canals and levees has been quite successful in redistributing the water during monsoons, and has helped to alleviate flooding in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.

Vietnam has a nice mix of interesting markets and small shops, with handicrafts, art and clothing among the best picks.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Vietnam

1. Tailored clothing

Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to get tailor-made clothing at a great price. Find a tailor, choose your fabric, get measured and return later to collect your custom-made fashion.

2. Hilltribe handicrafts

Some of Vietnam's hilltribe people make excellent woven bags, clothing and jewellery which make meaningful souvenirs for friends back home.

As one of the world's largest coffee exporters, Vietnamese coffee is among the world's best. If you’re a coffee fan, why not take a little taste of Vietnam home with you.

4. Lacquerware

The time-consuming, intensive process of creating Vietnamese lacquer art results in a beautiful, smooth and polished finish that adorns everything from bowls to paintings and jewellery boxes. While not the cheapest of souvenirs, authentic lacquer art is worth spending a bit more on.

Culture and customs

Vietnam's ancient culture can be traced back centuries and over the years has been influenced in different ways by the Chinese, Khmer, French and American cultures. For most Vietnamese people, connection to family and community is paramount - whether they are from rural villages or living in fast-paced cities.

Most festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family - participating in rituals, feasting on special foods, giving symbolic gifts and paying respects to ancestors. Most Vietnamese people practice a form of religion that is an interesting mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, although there are also a large number of practising Catholics living in Vietnam.

Having endured the hardship that the Vietnam War brought in the 1960s and 1970s, most Vietnamese people are keen to get on with life, living with a sense of optimism and humility.

The LGBQTIA+ community is gradually gaining recognition in Vietnam, with gay pride parades becoming a regular occurrence and a lift on same-sex marriage bans in 2015. With that said, Vietnam is still a conservative culture and many still hide their sexuality from their families. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have some gay-friendly bars and events. It's generally recommended that both gay and straight couples resist showing public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Does my trip to Vietnam support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Vietnam directly support our foundation partners, Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, Vun Art and WildAct .

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is helping disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, fighting the causes of human trafficking and (where possible) reuniting homeless or trafficked children with their families. Donations from our trips help their team of social workers, psychologists, teachers, and lawyers to offer individualised support to every child rescued.

Find out more or make a donation

Vun Art Vun Art empowers people with disabilities in Vietnam through vocational training and employment opportunities. They teach traditional folk painting using recycled materials which provides job opportunities, helps to preserve the ancient artform and cares for the local environment all at once. Donations from our trips support Vun Art's capacity-building programs for people with disabilities, including trainees' allowance, transportation, and equipment.

WildAct protects migratory birds of Vietnam and reduces illegal hunting by educating local communities about the importance of conservation. Donations from our trips help WildAct run educational programs to stop the illegal hunting of threatened migratory birds through knowledge-sharing in local communities.

Is Vietnam accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Despite having a high population of people with disabilities, accessible infrastructure and facilities are still limited in Vietnam. Chaotic traffic and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, uneven footpaths and high curbs add to the challenges of getting around for travellers with mobility or vision disabilities. Most entrances to hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist sites will have steps and many doorways will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs wider than 60cm. Some sights and destinations will not be fully accessible (ie. Ha Long Bay boats, Cu Chi Tunnels) but other places such as Hoi An are flat and much more wheelchair-friendly. There are likely to be situations where travellers with disabilities may need to rely on local people to help. Taxis are readily available and an affordable way to get around for travellers who are not confident in exploring independently on foot.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

While South Vietnam remains damp, other regions of the country gradually see a decline in rainfall as the month progresses. Vietnam Weather in September

Boy pointing while riding a scooter with his father in Vietnam in September

Given the overall decrease in rainfall, September is the best off-season month to visit Vietnam. Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) transitions into autumn from summer, with cooler, more comfortable weather and occasional showers. You can expect more sunny days with less humidity. Likewise Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) also sees a marked decrease in rainfall, making outdoor activities more favorable. Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) experiences frequent and heavy rainfall, high humidity, and occasional thunderstorms throughout September, which may affect your travel plans.

The average temperature of Vietnam in September ranges from 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F).

For a seasonal overview, check out our travel guide on the best time to visit Vietnam .

Weather in Vietnam in September - Rainfall and Temperatures

Why visit vietnam in september.

Street food market in Hue.

Although it is the start of a low season in Vietnam in September, there are plenty of things to do in Vietnam during this time of year. Below is a list of reasons to plan your trip to Vietnam in September :

The best of Vietnamese nature: September is a picturesque month in rural areas of Vietnam, especially in the idyllic landscapes of the Mekong Delta and the highlands of Dalat. The countryside bursts into vibrant hues of green, with rice paddies glistening and hillsides blanketed with colorful flowers. Both North and South Vietnam see a decrease in rainfall, so walking and sightseeing tours of popular destinations such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City become more accessible.

Affordable rates and fewer crowds: As September falls within Vietnam's low tourist season, you'll likely encounter attractive deals, particularly towards the month's end. You can enjoy luxury accommodations that might normally be out of your budget during the peak season. As you'll find fewer crowds, especially in the south and central regions, you can explore the popular sites and attractions at your own pace.

Festivals and events: In September, Vietnam dazzles with festivals like the Tết Trung Thu (Mid-Autumn Festival) and Hue Festival . Delve into Vietnamese culture, from lantern-lit processions to vibrant artistic showcases. Remember to savor mooncakes and immerse yourself in the rhythmic beats of traditional music. The country also celebrates its National Day on September 2nd to mark the country's independence from French colonial rule.

Harvest season: In Northern Vietnam, including places like Sapa, you'll witness breathtaking views of golden rice fields during harvest. The landscapes come alive with vivid yellow hues, adding charm to the scenery. Explore Vietnam's most stunning postcard-worthy landscapes while you're there.

Where to go and what to do

A lion dance at Times City complex in Vietnamese mid autumn festival.

In September, Vietnam comes alive with numerous events, festivals, and natural beauty, making it an ideal period for exploration. As the monsoon gradually transitions into the dry season, some of the best places to visit in Vietnam in September are Phú Quốc, Hue, Mekong Delta, Hanoi, and Mu Cang Chai.

Hanoi, the capital city, has perfect weather during this time. Wander along streets like Phan Dinh Phung and Tran Phu, where golden leaves and blooming milk flowers create a picturesque scene under gentle sunlight. Stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, and immerse yourself in authentic local cuisine. If you happen to be in the city during National Day, you'll witness the city come alive with a grand parade and captivating performances across Ba Dinh Square.

Head to Phu Quoc Island where pristine beaches, lush tropical forests, and vibrant marine await. Then, venture to the central region and discover the enchanting landscapes of Hue, where the ancient Imperial City and Perfume River offer a glimpse into Vietnam's rich history. Further south, immerse yourself in the captivating charm of Hoi An's lantern-lit streets and centuries-old architecture.

For adventurous souls seeking thrills in Vietnam's untamed landscapes, travel to places like Sapa, Mau Son, and Mu Cang Chai to escape the humidity of the central and southern regions. Take a trip to Bach Ma, the only remaining imperial city, where azaleas bloom in full grandeur and transform the surrounding area into an amazing crimson carpet.

September is also a good time to explore the Mekong Delta. Enjoy local cuisine at quaint restaurants and browse the vibrant floating markets in Cai Be and Cai Rang. Rent a bike for a tranquil ride through the countryside villages and paddy fields. You can also experience Mu Cang Chai, a rural district in Northern Vietnam, dazzling with its golden rice terraces, perfect for trekking at La Pan Tan, conquering Khau Pha pass, or exploring Lim Mong village.

Vietnam Weather in September: Still Rainy? Best Places to Go

Vietnam's regional weather.

  • Best Places to Visit

Crowds and Costs

What to wear in september, vietnam weather in september: overview.

September marks the transition of seasons — from wet to drier (for most of Vietnam) and hot to cooler — as the average daily high temperature of most areas falls to 31°F (88°F).

It is the tail end of the hot and humid rainy season in Northern and Southern Vietnam , while Central Vietnam enters the height of its extremely torrential rainy season .

Typhoons are likely to affect coastal trips to Da Nang or Nha Trang this month. If you are a beach lover, you're suggested to visit drier Phu Quoc in the south, Koh Samui in Thailand, or Bali in Indonesia instead.

In September, the rainfall in Vietnam's North and South is high to very high , but decreasing and less frequent by the end of the month.

On the contrary, rainfall increases dramatically in Central Vietnam in September — from moderate to very high. You are likely to experience afternoon downpours in Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang, etc.

Average Temperatures of the Most Popular Tourist Areas in September

Average rainfall of the most popular tourist areas in september, the best 5 places to visit in vietnam in september.

In September, the best places to go shift from Central Vietnam to Northern Vietnam . (Southern Vietnam experiences its wettest month.)

In the north, it rains less and less and sunny days are more common, especially in late September . Autumn starts as well. You can see the Northern Highlands at their most picturesque in late September.

Here are the recommended cities for September:

  • Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Pinh, Mu Cang Chai
  • Central Vietnam: Hoi An

In September, you can encounter the beginning of autumn in Hanoi. "Milk Flowers" on blackboard or devil's trees begin to bloom in the streets. The sweet perfume symbolizes the arrival of autumn. The trees' leaves become yellow as well.

If your schedule permits, visit Hanoi on September 2 (Vietnam National Day) . The city will be well decorated with flowers. You would have chances to see the parades , fireworks at Ba Dinh Square, and boat races on Hoan Kiem Lake.

2. Ninh Binh

For an awesome karst landscape, Halong Bay is always the first choice in Vietnam. But in September, it might be affected by typhoons, during which bay cruises are canceled. Then, Ninh Binh is a perfect karst alternative .

Ninh Binh offers a perfect combo of hiking, boating, (on a smaller boat), and biking in a more peaceful way.

Rice is ready for harvest in September. The endless rice paddies are golden. Take a boat to admire Tam Coc, the 'Halong among the rice paddies'. Or cycle along the rural roads and say hi to the working locals.

The Trang An Landscape Complex is also a good choice. Caves are the must-visit in Trang An. What could be more exciting than taking a boat through a narrow and deep cave?

Away from the hot weather, there is also less rainfall in Sapa . The top highlight, hiking (from moderate to challenging), is coming back into season. Trekking in Sapa, you can follow rugged paths, hike through mountain villages, and discover the green rice terraces as they turn yellow.

Find a home stay to get away from the hustle and bustle, and be a Sapa local for a day . The slow-paced life is the perfect escape for all travelers.

Our clients usually stay 2–3 nights for hiking and to get a full experience of the area. We can customize a Sapa tour for your schedule and interests.

4. Mu Cang Chai

Like Sapa, Mu Cang Chai is also a paradise for hiking and motorbiking featuring amazing terraced fields and minority culture, but it is less touched by travelers.

It is ready for harvest after mid-September. The golden waves of tiered paddies wind round the mountains and create a majestic picture.

Its sheer rice terraces were cultivated by the Black Hmong over centuries. Scattered with minority villages, you can get many glimpses of local life.

Although its rainfall increases in September, Hoi An's tours are less affected by the afternoon downpours, due to the attractive inside options. When visiting (with us), to escape the rain, you will have the flexibility to visit historic sites , join in a cooking class , browse a local market , or go to a tailor for an ao dai dress or suit . If it's raining, you can stop at a café , have a cup of Vietnamese coffee, and listen to the musical pitter-patter of the raindrops .

Vietnam's Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th of the 8th lunar calendar (always a full moon day) — making the monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival celebrations the largest of the year. Local kids will carry their lanterns in parades or wear a mini lion costume for lion dances. Celebrating the festival with locals will bring you unforgettable memories.

September is in the low season , as Vietnamese students go back to school after their summer holidays, and beaches are less popular due to the increase in rainy days. Thus, you can enjoy a more tranquility at the attractions, with no long queues.

Likewise, flights and hotels are at their lowest in September . You can visit Vietnam with a lower budget.

  • Sun protection: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • Waterproofs: rain jacket or raincoat, umbrella, rubber boots… suiting the temperature
  • Loose, breathable clothing that covers your knees and shoulders for cultural sensitivity and sun protection
  • Light, quick-drying wear for humid days
  • Layers of clothing, maybe a hoodie, for the cooler evenings in Northern Vietnam
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Insect repellent if hiking activities are arranged.
