15 Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka

Written by Freddy Sherman Updated May 3, 2023

Writer Freddy Sherman visited Sri Lanka and spent time exploring Colombo, the Hambantota area, and Udawalawe National Park.

Sri Lanka is an amazing travel destination offering a wide range of places to visit and things to do. This island, located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of India, presents visitors with an incredible array of environments and tourist attractions to enjoy and experience.

Elephants in a river in Sri Lanka

This relatively compact island boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites where that history is preserved. The best places travelers can trace the island's fascinating history, from ancient times through the colonial period to the present, are in cities like Colombo and Kandy .

Incredible outdoor landscapes and safari experiences can be found in the country's large elephant- and leopard-filled national parks, like Yala, Minneriya, and Udawalawe. Sri Lanka is also a beach-lover's paradise , ringed by some of the world's most beautiful beaches, and home to a number of luxury beach resorts.

The Hambantota area is the best place to visit for a resort vacation experience. This is also one of the best places to visit for families, as many of the resorts are all-inclusive and there is a lot to see and do without having to leave the property.

When planning a Sri Lankan adventure, keep in mind that the country experiences its rainy season from May through August, making December through April usually the best time to visit. The shoulder season, September, October, and November, is a good time to visit as well.

Plan your travel itinerary with our list of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka.

Seema Malaka Temple, Beira Lake, Colombo

The capital city combines modern urban amenities with the country's colorful indigenous and colonial history. As a key stop on the world spice trade routes, Sri Lanka has long held strategic importance for European trading powers.

The country has been a colony of Portugal, the Netherlands, and most recently the British, and all these cultures blend with the Indigenous culture to form a wonderful hybrid. You can taste these influences in the food, see them in the architecture and the arts, and you can really feel them in Colombo.

Too many visitors simply use Columbo for its international airport (CMB) and immediately head out to the resort areas on the coast. The city is well worth a visit of at least a few days, even if you plan to head to a beach resort.

The city is also filled with museums and other things to do that can help connect you with Sri Lankan culture. Colombo sits on the coast, and there's a large green space and beach area right in the heart of the city separating an area called Fort from the Indian Ocean. It's the city's public playground and a fun place to visit, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

The city's new mega-tower, the Colombo Lotus Tower , is a great place to visit. The tallest free-standing tower in Southeast Asia, it provides amazing views of the city. Aside from indoor and outdoor observation areas, there's a fancy restaurant at the top and a popular food court in the mall at the tower base.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy

Kandy is where you go to learn about and experience Sri Lankan history. Located in central Sri Lanka, the city is the former capital city of the Sri Lankan royal dynasty, the country's main capital before the colonial period.

The high point of what's called the "Kandian Era" was between the 15 th and 18 th centuries, when the area remained independent while most of the coastal regions were colonized by European powers.

Be sure to visit the city's National Museum of Kandy , as it illustrates the story of the region and its people via exhibits and artifacts. Nearby, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a very holy Buddhist shrine, part of the royal palace complex. If you visit in August, there is a huge festival celebrating the temple and relics.

Kandy Lake is at the heart of the city and offers a peaceful refuge from the heat. There are hiking paths that circle the lake, dotted with temples and shrines. Venture out to the nearby suburb of Peradeniya and its amazing Royal Botanical Gardens.

Kandy is surrounded by mountains, which are home to many tea plantations. Some can be visited and offer tours and tea tastings. It's also surrounded by rainforests. The Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a forest park located within the city limits. The forest reserve has miles of hiking trails, as well as an excellent nature center with educational information.

Family of elephants in Udawalawe National Park

This large wildlife park is in the southern part of the country, about an hour's drive from the resort area of Hambantota. The terrain and environment vary, as the park is on the border of the country's wet and dry zones.

Visitors to the park can see elephants, as there's a large population of them, along with crocodiles, water buffalo, and more. In fact, it's one of the best places in the world to see elephants in the wild outside of Africa .

There are leopards there, too, but they can be very hard to track or spot. There are also monkeys and a large assortment of deer and small mammals. It's also an excellent place for bird-watching.

There are some small accommodations and guesthouses across from and even inside Udawalawe. You can also visit as a day trip, the best times to visit are very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon.

Aerial view of Galle Fort

The city of Galle is about a two-hour drive from Colombo via one of the country's first modern superhighways. This ancient trading port reflects its colonial history and is focused around a large, 17 th -century seafront fort.

Galle Fort is an entire preserved walled town, now filled with boutique hotels, shops, and restaurants (along with real residents). The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a great place to explore on foot – the entire Fort area is car-free. It's hard to get lost, as you're surrounded on three sides by the sea. It's one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for families, as the area is compact and filled with tourist-centric businesses.

Aside from and outside the fort, the city is surrounded by some amazing beaches . Like others in the country, the wide sand beach leads into clear, turquoise water. There's even a beach right beneath the iconic Galle lighthouse.

Aerial view of Hikkaduwa Beach

Only 90 minutes from Colombo, this beach is all about water sports, surfing, bodyboarding, snorkeling, and scuba diving. All the gear is easily available for rent from one of the beachfront stands. It's one of the country's most popular surfing areas , with the best waves between November and March.

The beach is large, so it never feels too crowded. There are a lot of beachfront stands selling all kinds of delicious local street food and a good number of small hotels and guesthouses if you want to stay overnight. It's also becoming home to more beach resorts, catering to foreign visitors with appropriate levels of luxury and amenities.

It's also known for its coral. The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary is a preserved marine area and part of Hikkaduwa National Park , located just off the shoreline. It was created to protect the area's coral reefs and educate visitors about coral. It can be explored on a guided boat tour or even by snorkeling.

Galle Face Green

Sri Lanka's version of LA's Venice Beach and NYC's Central Park isn't the place to get away from it all, but it is the place to relax, people watch, and have some fun with other Sri Lankans, whether it's day or night.

Aside from the beach, there's a large grass area where people picnic and play games. For the best energy, visit on a Friday or Saturday night. Come hungry, as every night there is a market with incredible street food to enjoy.

You can enjoy the beach and water or maybe fly a kite in the ever-present wind. You can play some football (soccer) or cricket as there are always pick-up games going on. The beach is fronted by vendors and restaurants, and the area beyond it is filled with hotels ranging in price from budget to luxury.

Be sure to visit the historic Galle Face Hotel, a beachfront colonial remnant that first opened in 1864. Galle Face Green is in the heart of downtown Colombo, just in front of Fort. You have the skyline behind you and the sea in front of you. It's the area between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lankan leopard in Yala National Park

Located on the island's southeast coast, this national park is known for leopard safaris . Leopards are very rare, but the park has a large population and it's possible to spot them even on a day trip. The park is also home to a large population of Asian elephants, which are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Aside from the fauna, the park is home to some incredible, varied environments and ecosystems. You can visit the marine and beach environment of the coastal areas, follow leopards across vast grasslands, or explore tropical rainforests.

There are also some important Buddhist temples and shrines within Yala, which is not far from the resort area of Hambantota.

Abhayagiri dagoba in Anuradhapura

A visit to Anuradhapura, one of the country's ancient capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards visitors with a glimpse into the past. The area is unique, as there's a thriving, modern town adjacent to an ancient one — you're not just visiting ruins. The current population makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth (starting in the 4th century BCE).

The ruins are awesome, with many crumbling temples, statues, pools, and other structures. There are modern structures, too, and the temple remains an active place of worship. The core of the complex is a very old tree. The Sri Maha Bodhi is believed to be the world's oldest living tree planted by a human.

Anuradhapura is a fun place to visit, as there are a lot of small guesthouses and cheap places to eat, along with bike rental, tour guides, and other businesses catering to tourists.

Buddhist ruins in Pollonnaruwa

This is an important ancient city ruin site, another one of the country's World Heritage Sites . Pollonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's second capital city, after Anuradhapura, thriving about a thousand years ago.

The garden-city is completely preserved, although most of the structures are in ruins. There are gardens, palaces, and temples, and while it's rather compact, it's best explored by bicycle. A bonus, the ruins are inhabited by a large troop of macaque monkeys, also residents of the area since ancient times. Duran Duran fans will recognize the site, as their Save a Prayer video was filmed here in the 1980s.

There's a small, modern town a few miles from the ruins, with guesthouses, bike rentals, cafés, and other tourist services. The town is close to Minneriya National Park, a great place to elephant-watch.

Aerial view of Tangalle

As an island, Sri Lanka is surrounded by beaches, and there really is something for everyone. For a diverse range of beach experiences, head to the Tangalle area. It's in the center of the southern coast of the island and is a popular resort destination.

You''ll find a wide range of beaches, from tropical coves to wide, windswept, seemingly endless stretches of open sand. You can also find beaches with services, vendors, and beachfront stands, as well as remote beaches where you're almost certain to find yourself alone.

At Rekawa Beach , just east of the town, there's a big sea turtle nesting area and conservation center.

Eurasian spoonbill in Bundala National Park

This national park and wetland sanctuary, with its dunes, lagoons, and large freshwater bodies of water, is one of the world's best places to visit for bird-watching . There are many species of birds here; some are endemic to Sri Lanka. Many of the birds migrate here seasonally from as far away as Siberia.

Aside from the birds there are many crocodiles, which like to eat the birds, as well as a large population of elephants. The beaches are a popular place for four of Sri Lanka's five species of sea turtles to lay their eggs.

The Bundala park area is along the southern Sri Lankan coastline between Kirinda and Hambantota.

Train on the Nine Arch Bridge near Ella

Sometimes it's as much about the journey as it is about the destination. An example of this is Ella, a small, hill-country town set among Sri Lanka's lush tea plantations. It's filled with small guesthouses, amazing food, and very friendly people. It's a fun getaway from the city or a way to enjoy a few days of leisurely hiking in the countryside.

A big reason people visit Ella is to ride the train from Kandy. Slowly, it winds its way up and down hills, through small towns, across green tea fields, until finally arriving in the small mountain town after about six hours. The ride is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world . You can also start the journey in Colombo, which adds three hours to the trip.

Adam's Peak

Another one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka that's also all about the journey is Adam's Peak. This mountain is topped by a sacred rock formation, and pilgrims traditionally climb to the summit at night in time to watch the sunrise.

The popular hike (which is great for families and children, too) generally takes about three hours, and there are rest stops and food vendors along the path. After the hike, you'll be rewarded by seeing a rock with a footprint-shaped indentation where some believe Adam made his first step. Others believe it's the footprint of Buddha, and some believe it was made by the deity Shiva.

The Adam's Peak hike begins in the village of Nallathanniya in central Sri Lanka. The best times to make the climb are between December and May when the weather is somewhat mild.

Aerial view of Sigiriya

Like Machu Picchu or Masada, Sigiriya impresses visitors just with the absurdity of its construction. It's a huge rock formation that's been carved and transformed into a palace. The ruins are near the town of Dambulla in the central part of the country.

Built about 1,500 years ago, the palace complex sits atop a 660-foot (220-meter) rock with sheer walls. Those walls have ancient painted frescoes and carvings transforming the whole structure into a work of art. In the middle of one rock wall, there's a giant gateway carved in the shape of a lion.

Aside from the palace above, the area below is an intricate city complex with gardens and residential and commercial areas. It's a very important surviving example of early city planning from this era.

Elephant bathing at the waterhole in Minneriya National Park

If you're looking to see elephants in their natural environment, Minneriya National Park near the town of Polonnaruwa , is the best place to go. The lush, protected landscape means the park is a dry-season (May through September) feeding area for the elephants who live in the region's forests. The park is in Sri Lanka's Dry Zone, which sees far less rainfall than the other parts of the island.

Minneriya is a much better option to see elephants than some of the country's elephant orphanages and sanctuaries, which can be tourist traps that mistreat the animals. Various operators offer full- and half-day jeep safaris where you can explore the vast space. You could also visit the park on a day trip from Colombo; it's about three hours away by car.

10 Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka

' src=

Sri Lanka may be a small island in the Indian Ocean but that’s the only thing small about it. The country, formerly known as Ceylon, boasts an ancient civilization, golden sandy beaches with their swaying coconut palms, mountains, and rubber and tea plantations.

While visiting the island, you’ll see colonial architecture from the days when the Portuguese, Dutch and English ruled. You’ll see lots of elephants, some of which participate in local festivals and, if you’re lucky, perhaps a leopard or two at a wildlife sanctuary. An overview of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka:

10. Bentota [SEE MAP]

Bentota

With coconut palms swaying in the breeze, Bentota is a multi-tasking tourist town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. One of Sri Lanka’s most popular beaches, Bentota is first an Indian Ocean beach resort where water activities, such as surfing, sailing and snorkeling, abound.

When it’s time for a change of pace, you can visit a sea turtle hatchery and conservation center, which monitors five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world. You can also take in a 17th century fortress, lush gardens and an old Buddhist temple that dates from medieval times.

9. Nuwara Eliya [SEE MAP]

Nuwara Eliya

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea. What better place to learn more about tea than the source itself: Nuwara Eliya. With a temperate climate and elevation of 1,900 meters (6,100 feet), Nuwara Eliya is the country’s tea production capital.

You can tour a tea plantation and see how tea is made. Founded in the 19th century, this hill country town soon became a retreat for British colonists, earning the nickname Little England.

April is a good time to visit, when visitors flock here to see the blossoms and celebrate Sri Lanka New Year. Other sights include Lake Gregory and Laxapana, Sri Lanka’s most famous waterfalls.

8. Anuradhapura [SEE MAP]

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is an ancient sacred city that was established around a cutting from Buddha’s fig tree. Dating back to the third century BC, Anuradhapura was established by the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns.

This magnificent city of palaces, temples and monuments flourished for 1,300 years but was abandoned after it was invaded in the late 10th century. Much like Peru’s Machu Picchu, locals were aware of it but not many others until it was “discovered” by Europeans many centuries later. These fantastic ruins have since been excavated and are accessible for the public to enjoy.

7. Colombo [SEE MAP]

Colombo

Colombo has been the commercial capital of Sri Lanka for more than 2,000 years when its large natural harbor made it popular with ancient trades from Italy to China. It’s often referred to as the country’s capital, though the legislative capital is located in a nearby city.

Ruled over by first Portuguese and then British colonists, Colombo is a popular tourist destination. One of the most popular attractions is Galle Face Green, a strip park along the Indian Ocean. Also not to be missed is Gangaramaya Temple, which is known for its mix of ethnic architectural styles.

6. Yala National Park [SEE MAP]

Yala National Park

Animals rule the roost, the ground and the sky at Yala National Park, a wildlife sanctuary about 240 km (150 miles) from Colombo. Yala offers a plethora of things to do. Your visit begins with a safari to see animals, including elephants, water buffalo and leopards, found here in higher density than any other place in the world. Note: the park closes for September’s leopard breeding season.

The park also is home to 215 bird species, of which seven are native to the park. Top sights, besides wild animals, are Sithulpauwwa, an ancient rock temple that once housed 12,000 monks, and Magul Maha Viharaya, once the setting for a royal marriage.

5. Mirissa [SEE MAP]

Mirissa

If you’re looking to holiday in a tropical paradise, Mirissa just might be the answer to your dreams: swaying coconut palms, beautiful golden sand beaches, days spent rocking away in a hammock. It doesn’t get much better than this.

This crescent-shaped piece of paradise is famous for having the most stunning sunsets and sunrises in Sri Lanka. There are no luxury resorts to mar the landscape, so it’s just you, the beach, and quiet during the day. The pace picks up at night. Mirissa is the largest fishing port on the south coast and is a good place to go dolphin and whale watching.

4. Polonnaruwa [SEE MAP]

Polonnaruwa

The terms “beauty” and “beast” usually go together well, except at Polonnaruwa where beauty goes better with “ruins.” The second oldest kingdom in Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa is known for the ruins of this ancient garden city.

The 12th century ruins are some of the best preserved in the country. Polonnaruwa was a place where traders of exotic goods mingled with worshippers in the many temples.

Start your tour of Polonnaruwa at the Archaeological Museum, then proceed to the massive (50 buildings) Royal Palace with its well-preserved audience hall. The stunningly decorated Sacred Quadrangle is another must-see here.

3. Kandy [SEE MAP]

Kandy

Kandy, the second largest city in Sri Lanka, is the gateway to the Central Highlands and its tropical plantations that grow both tea and rubber. If you’re driving from Colombo, you’ll pass by rubber plantations on a road that is considered one of the country’s most scenic.

The last capital of the ancient kingdoms, Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in the world. A major, colorful festival involves taking the tooth relic around the city. Movie buffs may be interested to know Kandy was a chief location in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

2. Galle [SEE MAP]

Galle

Galle’s most famous attraction is its 17th century fort built by Dutch colonists. Sitting on a promontory overlooking the Indian ocean, the fort is known for its architectural style. Galle is considered a prime example of a fortified city.

The fortress is not just another pretty place, however; today the fort houses courts and businesses. Galle is becoming known as an arts colony and its expat community – about a third of the city’s homes are owned by foreigners.

Other top sights include a natural harbor, Sri Lanka’s oldest lighthouse, a maritime museum, a key Shiva temple and the Jesuit built St. Mary’s Cathedral.

1. Sigiriya [SEE MAP]

#1 of Best Places To Visit In Sri Lanka

Wannabe archaeologists need to put Sigiriya on their list of must-see places to visit in Sri Lanka. This ancient city is built on a steep slope, topped by a plateau almost 180 meters (600 feet) high.

This plateau is known as Lion’s Rock as it oversees the jungles below. Access to the site is through staircases and rooms emanating from the lion’s mouth. You’ll also see ponds, gardens and fountains. Pretty cool!

Locals consider the site the eighth wonder of the world. This ancient rock fortress dates back to the third century BC when it was a monastery. It was later turned into a royal residence.

Sri Lanka’s rich culture and history, gorgeous landscape and scenery, and plentiful wildlife-spotting opportunities are the main reasons the country tops many travelers’ bucket lists. And due to its relatively small size, many of the best attractions and destinations are within only a couple of hours of each other. In one day, if you’re on a tight schedule, you could spend the morning at one of the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, go on a safari in the afternoon, and then in the evening, relax and enjoy a cup of tea from one of the hill country plantations. Or, with more time, allow the opportunity for spontaneous exploration—road tripping throughout the country offers scenic views almost everywhere, and you might pull over for an elephant sighting or two along the way!

 Jamie Hergenrader

Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka’s hill country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and one corner of the country’s Cultural Triangle. It’s surrounded by mountains of rainforest and tea plantations and is home to a beautiful lake within the city. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred temple that houses Buddha’s tooth; wander the city’s colorful streets, and admire the architecture while sampling food from the many street vendors; walk around the lake for scenic views of the lake itself and also the colorful buildings that dot the hillsides around it; and make the quick drive outside of the city to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens to visit its orchid house and its spice garden, the latter of which will take you on an olfactory tour of the country’s native spices.

This massive rock formation is not only a breathtaking sight to take in as you approach, jutting up from the flat lands that surround it but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World Heritage site was a fort and palace that dates back to the fifth century. A network of winding staircases and paths will lead you to the top of the rock if you’re game to do the 1,217-step climb. Along the way, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley around you, you’ll pass ancient paintings by monks on the rock walls, and learn about the kingdom that once called this rock home. If you plan on making the entire climb (which we highly recommend), arrive at the park at opening time—you’ll avoid the afternoon heat and beat most of the crowds.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, one of the three corners of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the current capital city of the North Central Province, was the first ancient capital in Sri Lanka, thriving for more than 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993. Tourists visit this UNESCO World Heritage site to explore the well-preserved ruins and significant Buddhist history. Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another important site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens —it’s the oldest known human-planted tree in the world, and it grew from the southern branch of a sacred fig tree in India, the tree under which Gautama Buddha was said to have gained enlightenment.

Polonnaruwa

Jamie Hergenrader

The third corner of the Cultural Triangle , Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was abandoned. Like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is a draw for visitors interested in touring the city’s history and ruins, including those of the royal palace and other royal spaces, the quadrangle (a raised, walled-off area of monuments and Buddha statues), and dagobas. You’ll undoubtedly spot many monkeys (toque macaques) in the area, and that population of native, endangered monkeys was featured in Disney’s nature documentary, “Monkey Kingdom.”

Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country, primarily because of the chance to spot the leopards in the area—it is home to one of the largest concentrations of leopards in the world. (The land became a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and then a national park in 1938.) Although it comprises five blocks, only two of them are open to the public for safari to preserve and protect the majority of the land. Between February and July is the best time to visit; during these months, the lower water levels bring more animals out in the open searching for water. However, the park can get crowded in these peak months, and higher traffic through the park can lessen your chances of spotting one of the elusive leopards. Even so, you’ll still have the opportunity to see elephants, crocodiles, and water buffaloes.

Minneriya National Park

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Sri Lanka has plenty of safari opportunities, but Minneriya National Park is known for having the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants. Previously an elephant sanctuary, the land was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds. While you'll likely get a glimpse of several whenever you visit, the dry season from June to September is the best time to visit. This is when the elephants (sometimes as many as 300) will congregate around the reservoir. It might be most famous for these elephant sightings, but the park is also home to more than 170 species of birds, leopards, monkeys, and other wildlife.

Many tourists skip Colombo to set off for the country’s beautiful nature destinations, but the capital city deserves some of your time . Colombo comprises several distinct neighborhoods that showcase the old and new—from ancient temples and colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and city parks. It’s easy (and recommended) to wander and simply take in the sights as you go. One impressive architectural sight you won’t be able to miss is the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid (also known as the Red Mosque), a red and white mosque in Colombo’s Pettah neighborhood. Admiring it from the outside is intriguing enough, but if you want to go inside, ensure you’ve dressed appropriately; women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs.

This fortified old city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is another of the country’s impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the best things to do is walk along the fort’s ramparts that give you a view out to the water and inward toward the fort and city. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fort to learn about its history and architecture. Although the fort is the main attraction for visitors to the area, Galle is a prime destination for shopping as well; wander the pedestrian-friendly streets to check out the many art galleries, upscale markets, and boutique stores selling clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and home goods.

Nuwara Eliya

Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest exports, so a trip to the rolling hills of tea country is well worth your time. Nuwara Eliya boasts hundreds of acres of tea plantations and several tea production facilities you can visit to learn about the entire tea-making process, from planting to picking and steeping at home. Once you’ve had your fill of tea, be sure to explore the other gorgeous surroundings of Nuwara Eliya, such as the manicured and well-maintained Victoria Park, Lake Gregory for a day on the water, or a lakeside picnic, or the beautiful, 350-foot tall Ramboda Falls.

As one of the main beach destinations in the country, Mirissa attracts those looking for a laid-back, leisurely vacation of days lounging on the sand and nights out on the town. Among the gorgeous beaches in Mirissa, Mirissa Beach and Secret Beach are two of the best for their beauty and seclusion, but neither one gets too crowded. If you’d rather be out on the water, Mirissa is a surfer’s paradise, especially from October to April, and it’s also a popular destination for whale watching tours to spot blue whales. After a day in the sun, hit some of the casual but lively restaurants and bars, some of which are right along the beach, making them a perfect setting for a sunset cocktail.

Why Visit Sri Lanka

For a relatively small island off the coast of India in South Asia, Sri Lanka surprised me with the variety that it has to offer. With so much to see and do, you’ll undoubtedly be extending your trip or planning a return within a few days of arriving. It’s that good!

In recent years, several places have captured the attention of photographers, from the train ride between Kandy to Ella to the soaring Lion Rock Fortress in Sigiriya. It really is a dream for nature lovers, with a variety of colours, landscapes, wildlife, and terrain. From the tea plantations around Ella to the central plains around Sigiriya all the way to the swaying palm trees tracing the picturesque coastline. It bottles up some of the best parts of Asia all in a small island in the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka has something for everyone. This list of the amazing things to do in Sri Lanka aims to cover this incredible variety, with an ultimate bucket list to plan your trip around.

Amazing Things to Do in Sri Lanka

This is a complete list of the most incredible things to do in Sri Lanka, from the south to the north. If you’re looking for everything you need to add to your itinerary, then this covers a wide variety of places and activities.

Watch Sunrise from Little Adam’s Peak

This short and sweet hike is the best way to soak up the incredible views surrounding Ella and the hills. A popular little climb , this peak sits just outside of Ella town near the 98 Acres Resort and Ravana Zipline. The vantage point from the top offers a full panorama of Ella, including Ella Rock, and the surrounding valleys and tea plantations.

Most people try to hike up Little Adam’s Peak at either sunset or sunrise for an incredible view of the mountains with the golden light of the sun. I highly recommend sunrise though, for better guarantee of a clear sky.

It only takes about 15-20 minutes to climb to the top from the official trailhead on a well-formed path, including some concrete stairs. Allow enough time to explore the summit though, with various vantage points to sit and watch the sun rise above the ridgelines.

My complete guide to the hike details everything you’ll need to know, including how to get to the trailhead and where to get the best photos.

Admire the Nine Arch Bridge

The iconic landmark bridge in Ella, the Nine Arches Bridge, is definitely an Instagram fuelled attraction that has garnered a lot of attention. However, it’s still a very unique sight in Sri Lanka and is worth stopping by during your time in Ella.

Completed in 1921, the large stone bridge spans 91 metres long and 25 metres high, and is also called the  Bridge in the Sky , for its often moody setting amongst the foggy tea plantations. It’s definitely a photographers dream location, especially when you also catch the train travelling over the bridge (which happens several times a day).

There are many places to  view  the bridge from and several trails  leading to the bridge. So, it’s best to allow a bit of time to explore on foot the different angles and perspectives from the valley surrounding the train tracks. I highly recommend going early in the morning though, because the bridge does get packed full of people from 9am onwards.

Take the Ella to Kandy Train Ride

Considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, the Kandy to Ella train has become an absolute must do experience in Sri Lanka. With the hype also comes the crowds, so be prepared to push and shove your way onto the carriages and book your train ticket weeks in advance.

However, it’s still possible to jump on the train last minute with a third class unreserved ticket and stand for hours as you gaze out of the windows at the incredible views passing by. The trains are pretty slow and often delayed, so it’s quite a long journey at around  8 hours . I recommend breaking the journey up with a night or two in other hill towns like Nuwara Eliya or Haputale, to explore more of the tea region and hop on earlier trains that are quieter.

While you might have to wait for an open door for your photo opportunity , it’s still worth taking the train and enjoying one of the most iconic rides in the world. Before you plan your trip, make sure to read all my tips on the Kandy to Ella train so you know what to expect.

Observe Worshippers at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy

Kandy is the culture capital for a reason; you come here for the history, food and religious sites. The most famous (and important) attraction in Kandy is Sri Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It’s UNESCO World Heritage Listed and a pilgrimage site that draws Buddhists from all over the country.

The temple houses the tooth of Buddha (yes, literally a tooth). According to Buddhist legend, Buddha’s tooth was retrieved after he was cremated and it was believed that whoever possessed the tooth relic had divine right to rule over the land.

The temple lies between Kandy Lake and the royal palace complex. The main shrine and temple is a spiritual place, but it’s open to everyone as long as you ensure you’re modestly covered. While you won’t actually see the tooth, because it’s held in a jewell covered casket under guard, you can witness the casket being paraded around the city during the Festival of the Tooth in July-August every year.

Swim in Diyaluma Falls Near Ella

As the  second tallest falls  in Sri Lanka, this impressive long drop of water stands at 220 metres high with several tiers and natural swimming pools. It’s located 40km south of Ella via Wellawaya, with the drive to Diyaluma Falls taking around 2 hours from Ella, so it’s ideal as a day trip.

There’s no direct public transport to reach the waterfall, so you’ll have to arrange a tuk tuk or tour operator to get you there. I paid 10,000 LKR (US$35) for the day to  my homestay  owner’s son who had a tuk tuk, which included stops at Diyaluma Falls, Ravana Waterfall and Secret Waterfall from Ella.

While you can admire the falls from below, the real highlight is hiking to the upper pools for a dip. It takes about 15-20 minutes to hike on a dirt trail to access the top of the falls, from where you can explore the multiple tiers. This is a really unique experience in Sri Lanka, especially being able to swim in freshwater pools (although keep an eye out for leeches!).

Climb Ambuluwawa Tower Near Kandy

One of the most incredible things to do in Sri Lanka that is still off the radar amongst international travellers, Ambuluwawa Tower is a standout landmark near Kandy. It’s worth taking half a day from the city to visit this whimsical, spiral tower with panoramic views in Gampola.

This 54 metre high tower sits on top of a mountain peak standing 3,567 metres above sea level. The tower is actually inside a  multi-religious complex  that is home to a Buddhist Temple, Hindu Temple, a Christian Church, and a Muslim Mosque. But it is the tower that most come for.

The white cone shaped tower features a  spiral staircase  that clings to the outside of the roof and winds its way to the very pointed tip. From the top, you can see a long way over the valley and to the mountains in the distance. If you’re not keen on heights, then I’d say give this one a miss though, because the staircase is a little hairy. But it’s a fun excursion that you can easily do independently on public transport. Read my guide below on how to get there and what to expect.

Spot Leopards on Safari in Yala National Park

For a small country, the island is home to several national parks and plenty of incredible wildlife. A safari is often on top of many traveller’s bucket lists and Sri Lanka is a surprisingly affordable place to see some of the world’s most impressive animals.

Yala National Park is the most popular national park, particularly because it’s considered the best place to spot leopards . However, you’ll still have a chance to also see elephants, buffalo, snakes, sloths, jackals, and more.

You can either get yourself to Yala National Park and arrange a safari drive through a tour operator or pay for a day trip from a nearby city like Galle. Check out one of these tour options below:

Surf rentals on Weligama Beach

Learn to Surf in Weligama (or Do a Surf Camp)

Sri Lanka has burst onto the scene as one of the best places to learn to surf in the world. The island’s south coast is littered with bays filled with mellow waves and year-round warm water, perfect for beginners to gain confidence and catch their first waves.

Whether you’re searching for your very first surf lesson or hoping to sign up for an intensive surf camp, Sri Lanka has plenty of options for learning to surf. While there are several towns known for their surfing, including Arugam Bay and Ahangama, Weligama definitely takes the cake for beginners. This long beach break has consistent small waves with plenty of surf schools found just back from the sand.

For those serious about learning to surf though, joining a surf camp program for a week will really get you hooked. I recommend checking out Layback Surf Camp in Weligama, one of the few locally owned and run camps with a great team of surf instructors.

Galle Fort Walls

Watch Sunset from Galle Fort Walls

Galle is the dreamy, storied city on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. Famed for its picturesque lighthouse, swaying palm trees, and cobblestone streets reminiscent of European islands, Galle draws the crowds. The small but charming Galle Fort is where you’ll spend most of your time, checking out the boutiques, upscale wine bars, and pretty colonial buildings.

However, it’s the sunset from the ramparts within the fort that really captures the vibe of the city. Most people head up to the Galle Fort walls at golden hour to find a spot overlooking the ocean where you can see the sun sink below the horizon.

Flag Rock Bastion  seems to be the favourite, with a perfect view of the lighthouse and local cliff jumpers wowing everyone by diving into the rocky depths below. However, for the best direct view of the sunset,  Triton Bastion  was definitely the better spot, with room on the grassy walls offering front row seats.

Sunset at Dickwella Beach

Visit Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa

Another spot to take in the beautiful coastal views, Coconut Tree Hill is located just outside of Mirissa on the south coast. The now iconic hilltop lookout is peppered with picturesque palm trees and an incredible view of the ocean.

Despite being located on private land, it’s accessible for all via a short 10 minute walk. It’s ideal as a sunset spot , when you can capture the golden light. However, be aware that it gets incredibly busy and you’ll likely have to wait in line for a photo.

Sunset at Hiriketiya Beach

Relax at Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Beach has emerged as the place to relax and spend time at the beach on the south coast. The small curved bay and local village outside of Dikwella known as Hiriketiya or Hiri for short was easily my favourite place to spend time.

The bay is home to a great surf spot for all levels, from beginners to expert surfers. While the beach still offers places to relax on the sand and sit back in a beachfront cafe or bar. Hiri has a vibe that is worthy staying for, plus it draws a pretty cool crowd of surfers, photographers, digital nomads and backpackers.

It’s also pretty easy to find affordable accommodation just back from the beach and a good mix of cheap local eats and upscale restaurants to choose from. A trip along the south coast wouldn’t be complete with a stop in Hiri, in my opinion.

View of Sigiriya Rock from Pidurangala Rock

Hike to Pidurangala Rock for Sunset

The view from Pidurangala Rock has become synonymous with Sri Lanka. With a direct view of the impressive Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the carpet of lush trees in the valley below, it’s become a right of passage for backpackers to head up to Pidurangala Rock at sunset .

It’s a steep, rugged hike up to the rocky escarpment taking from 25-40 minutes depending on fitness and crowds. The final scramble is a bit of an effort, but you’ll be rewarded with this jaw dropping view.

Sunset is definitely a popular but worthwhile time to make the hike up, although be prepared to climb back down in the dark. The colours of the setting sun reflecting against the landscape makes for incredible photographs. It’s located just 4.5km from Sigiriya town, so it’s an easy excursion even for those short on time.

Sigiriya Rock entrance

Explore the Rock Fortress of Sigiriya

Certainly one of the historical highlights of Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Rock Fortress is on par with Machu Picchu or the Pyramids of Giza for its fascinating humanmade construction from centuries ago. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, the fortified palace and fortress is perched on the imposing Sigiriya Rock seen from miles around.

While the entrance ticket is a bit pricey , it’s worthwhile spending a few hours admiring the ancient complex and climbing up the rickety steel staircase to the top of the rock. Those with a reasonable level of fitness who are also stopping to look at things along the way should be able to complete the hike to the top of Sigiriya Rock in an hour.

Most people time their visit with either sunrise or sunset to again take advantage of the golden light of the sun. This is also ideal to beat the strong heat of the middle of the day and avoid the day trip crowds too.

Rock Cave Temple

Be Amazed by the Dambulla Rock Cave Temples

While it doesn’t get the attention of Sigiriya, these amazing rock cave temples are just less than hour down the road. Dambulla is home to the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. It has been a sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, with Buddhist monks inhabiting the area since the 3rd century.

The cave temples are filled with buddha statues built in the 12th century as well as impressive wall paintings completed over the 18th century. It’s worth a quick trip to explore Dambulla from Sigiriya, with both public transport and tuk tuks available to get you to the temples. Read my Sigiriya Guide for more info.

Standing at Lankatilaka Temple

Explore the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

An often missed archaeological site in Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa absolutely blew me away. What was once the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura, it was the centre of the Sinhalese kingdom that expanded from 1070 until 1232.

It’s nearly a 1.5 hour drive from Sigiriya, but it’s worth the day trip if you have the time. The historical complex is huge, and I’d recommend hiring a tuk tuk to get you around rather than trying to cover it all on foot in the harsh midday sun. The UNESCO World Heritage Listed site is filled with vast ruins of temples, palaces, and religious buildings which you can explore at your leisure (although ensure you take your shoes off when entering the temples and stupas).

The must-see attractions within the complex include the  Royal Palace  and surrounding temples, Sacred Quadrangle Temple , the huge  stupa of Rankot Vihara , the nearly 17m high buddha statue of  Lankatilaka   Temple and the carved buddha figures of  Gal Vihara .

Swimming with a turtle

Take a Snorkelling Trip to Pigeon Island in Trincomalee

While surfing is often the main water activity people think of in Sri Lanka, it’s also a great place for snorkelling and diving. Trincomalee on the northeast coast of the island is considered the best place to get into the ocean and see some of the incredible marine life on display.

Just a 20 minute boat ride off the coast of Trincomalee, Pigeon Island National Park is one of the most accessible spots for snorkelling with sea turtles and reef sharks. While the increased park fees have put some travellers off, it’s still a worthwhile half day excursion.

There’s plenty of tour operators on Uppuveli Beach or Nilaveli Beach that will take you out to the island for a couple of hours of snorkelling with the right gear. You can also try diving, and head to other spots off the coast. However, snorkelling provides the best chance to swim with turtles and sharks in the shallow waters.

Rice and curry Jaffna

Taste Delicious Local Food in Jaffna

Few people have time to head north to Jaffna, but the Tamil capital in northern Sri Lanka is home to some unique and delicious food that makes it worthwhile. With everything from the typical rice and curry to South Indian snacks like dosa and idli, Jaffna is home to so many great little restaurants to try during your visit.

The Malayan Cafe has been a longstanding local spot for some of the most affordable and best tasting food in the city. You’ll find this unassuming place amongst the main market area and filled with locals eating lunch with their hands from a banana leaf for just over a dollar.

Delft Island

Stay a Night on Delft Island

For adventurous travellers looking for something a little different, taking a ferry out to Delft Island off the coast of Jaffna is one of the most unique things to do in Sri Lanka. As the remotest inhabited island in the north, Delft Island is like taking a step back in time with old colonial ruins, wooden fishing boats, empty beaches, and quiet streets devoid of vehicles.

The island is rarely visited by tourists, although there’s a ferry service that runs from Kurikadduwan, an hour away from Jaffna, a few times per day for free. The hour long crossing can be rough, so I recommend spending a night on the island rather than just visiting for the day.

You can stay the night at a rustic “glamping” style accommodation run by a local family, which makes the experience even more special. Delft Village Stay is the perfect base to explore the island, with bicycles available for you to get around to some of the sights. My guide below details everything you need to know about heading to Delft Island.

Red Mosque Exterior

Visit the Red Mosque in Colombo

While most travellers try to avoid spending any time in Colombo, if you end up exploring the capital city for a day or two, then you shouldn’t miss visiting the Red Mosque. It’s easily the most iconic building in the city, located right in the heart of the main bazaar known as Pettah Market.

Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid is a fantastical red and white striped mosque that was built in 1909 for the local Muslim community as a central daily prayer setting. The entrance for foreigners is located on 2nd Cross Street. You’ll have to check the ever-changing opening hours, but generally they work around prayer times. There are  free 30 minute tours  of the mosque operating all day, with gowns given for women to wear and men if they’re not appropriately covered.

Anuradhapura stupa

Explore the Ancient Stupas of Anuradhapura

Another city that is often skipped on a Sri Lanka itinerary, Anuradhapura is an important historical and cultural place and was once a Ceylonese capital. The UNESCO World Heritage Listed Sacred City is the main attraction, covering a huge area filled with several temples and large stupas.

For the most famous parts of the complex, you’ll need to obtain a pricey ticket of US$25 per foreigner. However, you can also explore some of the smaller yet still impressive stupas for free or a fraction of the cost. Most tuk tuk drivers will help you get around to what you want to see.

Visiting some of the large stupas is the main highlight, with some of them almost devoid of tourists while others are crowded with pilgrims. It’s worth spending just a day around the city, but you’ll need a tuk tuk to make the most of your time.

Mihintale sunset

Watch the Sunset from Mihintale

A little side excursion from Anuradhapura that is totally worth a trip if you’re spending a night in the city, Mihintale is a holy mountain peak and temple complex. Just a 30 minute drive out of Anuradhapura, this tall mountain is said to be where the Buddhist monk Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and established Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

You’ll need to be prepared for lots of stairs to get you to the top and plenty of pilgrims crowding the rocky summit. However, it’s a really special way to admire the devotion of Sri Lankans and watch an incredible sunset . Allow enough time before sunset to explore the temples, stupas, and statues at the summit, with the skinny staircase to the rocky top the real highlight (pictured above).

Arrange a tuk tuk driver to take you there and wait for you to return after sunset.

Rosie's Kitchen Cooking Class

Attend a Cooking Class

Sri Lankan cuisine was truly a highlight of my time in the country. It really took me by surprise after coming from India, but the variety of Sri Lanka’s curries were delicious and incredibly impressive, especially for vegetarians. I would really encourage you to do a cooking class during your trip, with so many restaurants now offering classes in places like Sigiriya, Hiriketiya, and Ella.

We learnt how to make up to 20 curries during a 4 hour cooking class in Hiriketiya, with a vibrant host that made the entire experience very entertaining. It’s a great way to interact with locals and learn how they put together such tasty meals using lots of spices and fresh produce. Check out some of these other cooking classes:

Home stay in Sigiriya

Stay in a Local Homestay

There’s plenty of variety in accommodation in Sri Lanka, with everything from budget hostels to high end resorts. However, some of my favourite experiences in the country came from staying at local homestays. It was such a joy to interact with local families, who were incredibly friendly, accommodating, and helpful.

Often times, local homestays had good connections with tuk tuk drivers or even a family member who offered affordable day trips. I also had free pick ups from bus stations, some of the best breakfasts I had during my trip, and fresh coconuts picked from the backyard, all from local hosts.

However, homestays are usually pretty basic and budget-friendly accommodation, but what you might miss out on with facilities or comfort, you gain with their unmatched hospitality and friendliness.

I was able to find almost all of the homestays I stayed at by just browsing Booking.com. Plenty of local accommodations are now listed on there, so it makes it easy to book ahead and you can message them through the app to arrange pickups etc. Some of my favourite homestays from my three months in Sri Lanka were:

  • Freedom Homestay (Sigiriya)
  • Quiet Rest Inn (Ella)
  • Tony’s Garden House (Jaffna)
  • Lake House Homestay (Anuradhapura)
  • 4ty Two Homestay (Galle)

Gampola Bus Station

Hop on a Local Bus

Only those with strong nerves should hop on a local bus in Sri Lanka, but in my opinion it is a quintessential experience. The iconic local buses zip around corners with little concern for anyone else on the road, sometimes at hurtling, terrifying speed with an overflow of passengers.

However, for budget travellers looking to get efficiently between places, the buses are in my opinion the most reliable. They are more direct and less delayed than the trains, so they are generally the best transport option outside of private transfers and tuk tuks.

While you can opt for A/C minibuses between some destinations, I would say it’s still worth climbing onto a real local bus at least once during your trip. It really is an experience, just don’t opt for the front seat where you can see what’s happening on the road out the windscreen (or close your eyes)!

Matey Hut rice and curry

Try Rice and Curry

Rice and curry has become the national dish of Sri Lanka. This delicious and ever-changing plate of goodness usually consists of rice and up to four curries (usually vegetarian). It’s generally pretty cheap and incredibly filling, so it’s your go-to if you’re on a budget (and even if you’re not).

The flavours and ingredients used in Sri Lankan curries varies a bit, with plenty of local produce offering some differences from city to city. You won’t get bored of rice and curry, trust me. Highlights include, dahl curry, pumpkin curry, eggplant curry, and coconut sambol.

Some of the best places to go for rice and curry in Sri Lanka that you’ll want to add to your restaurant list include:

  • Lemongrass Cafe (Hiriketiya Beach)
  • Kenoli Restaurant (Sigiriya)
  • Matey Hut (Ella)
  • Dulnetha Restaurant (Weligama)
  • Veda Cafe (Ahangama)
  • Malayan Cafe (Jaffna)

How Long to Spend in Sri Lanka

Now, with so many incredible things to do and see in Sri Lanka, it can be difficult to know how long you need to spend in the country. In all honesty, you’ll need at least a month to really tick off everything on this list in both north and south Sri Lanka. However, if you don’t have a month or more then you can stick to exploring either the north or the south on separate trips.

This will really come down to the time of year that you’re visiting, as the monsoon moves from south to north, providing completely opposite climates from top to bottom. The southwest monsoon runs from May – October, so this is when you’ll want to head to the north and east of the country. Then, from November until April, the northeast gets hits by monsoon and the south experiences clear, warm weather.

If you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka, then you can really see the best of the south in two weeks or less. Otherwise, the north of Sri Lanka can be seen in 10 days or so. Here’s my suggested itineraries to help you plan:

How to Watch the Brilliant Lyrid Meteor Shower This Month

Fiery streaks will illuminate the night sky from April 15-29, with the spectacle’s peak occurring from April 21-22

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Dark sky meteor shower

The highly anticipated total solar eclipse has come and gone—but astronomy aficionados have another reason to look up this month. Starting Monday, the Lyrid meteor shower will light up the night sky around the world.

Occurring each year in mid- to late April, the Lyrids typically produce 10 to 20 bright, fast meteors per hour at their peak, but they have been known to produce heavier showers of up to 100 meteors per hour. This year, the Lyrids will run from April 15 to April 29, with the peak taking place on the evening of April 21 to the early morning hours of April 22.

Ready for another skyward spectacle? Here’s what you need to know if you’re hoping to watch the Lyrids.

Where do the meteors come from?

The Lyrids are one of the oldest known meteor showers. Astronomers in China spotted them and made the first recorded observations of Lyrid meteors in 687 B.C.E., which means humans have been gazing upon the shower for at least 2,700 years, according to NASA .

As with other meteor showers, the Lyrids occur when Earth passes through the debris field of a comet—in this case, it’s the comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher . The comet is named after A. E. Thatcher , an amateur astronomer who first observed it on April 5, 1861.

C/1861 G1 Thatcher has a long trip around the sun—it takes the comet more than  415 years to complete a full orbit. This drawn-out journey means the year of its discovery—1861—was also the last time the comet Thatcher made its closest approach to the sun, known as the perihelion . The next time Thatcher will enter the inner solar system will be around the year 2278, according to EarthSky .

YouTube Logo

As the comet hurtles through space, it leaves behind a trail of dust and rock. When the Earth passes through Thatcher’s path, some of those pieces enter the atmosphere and burn up, creating fiery streaks of light in the process—which are often referred to as “shooting stars.” Lyrid meteors typically fly through the atmosphere at speeds of 29 miles per second, per NASA.

To viewers on Earth, the Lyrids appear to originate near the constellation Lyra , a point known as the shower’s radiant. Lyra’s brightest star—and one of the brightest stars in the sky, period—is Vega, which can make the constellation easy to find.

Most years, the Lyrids produce an average of 18 meteors per hour at their peak. But certain years have rare outbursts—in 1803, 1922, 1945 and 1982, the Lyrids produced upwards of 100 meteors per hour.

The timing of these outbursts is erratic and hard to predict. Some people have said they happen periodically, with roughly the same amount of time between each one, but “the data doesn’t support that,” NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke tells Space.com ’s Daisy Dobrijevic.

Tips for viewing the Lyrid meteor shower

Milky Way with meteors

The Lyrids are not as bright as the August Perseids , nor as fast as the Leonids in November . But they’re worth watching all the same.

This year, unfortunately, the Lyrids’ peak will align with a nearly full moon. That extra light will make it harder—but not impossible—to see the meteors in the night sky. In April, the full moon is called the Pink Moon , and it will occur on April 23, just after the shower’s peak. Sky watchers will have to contend with a bright waxing gibbous moon during the most prolific phase of the shower.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of a shooting star or two during the Lyrids, all you really need to do is head outside after dark and look up. To improve your visibility, however, it’s helpful to travel to an area with very little light pollution—like a certified Dark Sky Place , a national park or some other wilderness area. Wear warm clothes and bring a chair that lets you recline comfortably (or a blanket, so you can lie on the ground). Plan to spend periods of at least 30 to 60 minutes looking at the night sky, per BBC Sky at Night Magazine ’s Iain Todd.

Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, and try to use red lights (instead of white lights) whenever possible. This also means you should try to avoid looking at your phone screen before and during your meteor-watching experience.

You might be tempted to stare in the direction of the Lyra constellation, but experts recommend letting your eyes roam around the entire sky. Keep your eyes peeled for fireballs, or occasional bright flashes produced by the Lyrids.

“It is actually better to view the Lyrids away from their radiant: They will appear longer and more spectacular from this perspective,” according to NASA. “If you do look directly at the radiant, you will find that the meteors will be short—this is an effect of perspective called foreshortening .”
