Things to bring

While we take care of most essentials, there are a few creature comforts you should bring along to make your adventure even more amazing. Remember to pack light, it’s a boat adventure day.

Hat and sunglasses

Towel, bathers, and sunscreen

Dry clothing and a warm jacket

Seasickness medication If you are prone to seasickness or unsure

Snorkelling gear If you prefer to use your own snorkelling gear

While we like to think we’re the best at what we do, some things, like the weather, sea state, customer ability, wildlife location, etc., are occasionally out of our control. Every once in a while, this itinerary might change.

Because we keep our tours small, we’re pretty flexible. We will always try to take what’s on offer naturally on the Ningaloo Reef and make the most of the day at hand. We’ll always deliver the best tour we can.

Below is a sample Swim with Whale Sharks tour itinerary.

The day before your tour: Hydrate, avoid alcohol in excess and chill – you’re going to have an action-packed day, so prepare accordingly!

Jump out of bed , splash your face with water, and get a nutritious breakfast. You’re about to have one of the most exciting days of your life!

Live Ningaloo’s complimentary shuttle service will collect you from your accommodation. (Make sure you’ve let us know where you’re staying). For a complete list of where to pick up locations and times, check out our FAQs .

After a 30-minute informative drive with our crew, you’ll arrive at Tantabiddi Boat Ramp on the west side. This is where we keep Wave Rider.

Once we’re all on board and briefed by our skipper, you’ll be kitted out with your outfit for the day—a mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit (if you haven’t brought your own).

After you’re squeezed into your wetsuit and looking fabulous, we’ll head to our first snorkel spot for the day (location is weather and sea state dependant). You can expect to see coral, fish and perhaps even stingrays, turtles and more if you’re lucky! This is also an excellent opportunity to test out your equipment for the day and ensure everything fits and there are no leaks!

Hop back on Wave Rider for a warm cup of tea or coffee and a light snack. The day is just beginning!

Our spotter planes are above us, searching for all things megafauna, keeping a special eye on anything interesting. Depending on the seasonality, we could search for whale sharks, humpback whales, and manta rays . They’ll communicate via radio with our skipper to let us know exactly where to head and what the behaviours of the wildlife are displaying. We will be steaming out to meet them whilst our crew brief you on swimming with the wildlife, what to do, and what not to do. Now is a great time to ensure all your gear is back on and ready to go.

If we are lucky enough to spot and swim with a whale shark, humpback whale or manta ray, this is your time to shine! You’ll have your snorkelling equipment on and be ready to jump in when our skipper and guides deem it safe. Our photographer will also be in the water to assist and capture the day.

After a few hours with the megafauna, squealing in your masks, and weeing in your wetsuits (we all do it), we’ll cruise back inside the lagoon .

We anchor up and get stuck into a delicious lunch . It’s the perfect way to refuel after a once-in-a-lifetime morning.

Weather permitting, you’ll jump in the water for your second snorkel of the day inside the lagoon. Cruise and take it slow while you soak up this unforgettable experience.

We will pop a bottle of sparkling , toast to the day, and cruise back to the Tantabiddi Boat Ramp.

Live Ningaloo’s complimentary shuttle service will take you back into Exmouth Township and drop you at your accommodation. Can someone say “ best day ever ”?

Best Whale Shark Tours in Exmouth (plus Essential Swim Tips)

Swimming with the magnificent whale sharks on the Ningaloo Reef is an absolute bucket list experience. I was so excited to finally experience this for myself during our trip to Exmouth in May 2021. Read on for all you need to know, including the best time to swim with whale sharks and recommended whale shark tours in Exmouth.

This article was first published in December 2021, and last updated in December 2023.

Table of Contents

What’s Special about the Exmouth Whale Sharks?

Exmouth is one of the only places you can swim with whale sharks in Australia.

Exmouth is a small town found on the tip of the north west cape in Western Australia, on the doorstep of the Ningaloo Reef, the world’s largest fringing reef.

You can reach Exmouth by car (11 hour drive from Perth) or by plane (2 hour flight from Perth). The drive from Perth to Exmouth has some incredible stops and sights to see along the way, make sure to check out my P erth to Exmouth guide to plan your own adventures.

Whale sharks are the world’s biggest fish. But there is no need to be alarmed by these gentle giants. Whale sharks are filter feeders that survive mostly on plankton.

whale shark swim tours exmouth

Whale Shark Season Exmouth

The best time to swim with whale sharks in Exmouth is from April to July .

The whale shark swimming season in Exmouth begins around March to coincide with the annual coral spawning.

Tours generally begin to operate from early April in Exmouth and continue into the shoulder months of August and September. Timings may fluctuate from year to year.

Other Whale Tours in Exmouth

If arriving in Exmouth after Whale Shark season, humpback whale tours start in August.

Most tour operators offer Eco tours with possible sightings of humpback whales, manta rays and other wildlife, such as this half day snorkel turtle tour which runs almost all-year round.

What happens if I don’t see a whale shark?

If you don’t happen to see a whale shark, operators have a ‘no sighting’ policy.

This policy allows you to rebook your tour for another day. For this reason, book your whale shark tour for early on during your time in Exmouth.

This allows for the chance to take another tour if you don’t happen to see them on your first go.

whale shark swim tours exmouth

Exmouth Whale Shark Tour Experience

Tips for booking an exmouth whale shark tour.

The whale shark tours need to be booked a few weeks in advance .

The whale shark tours in Exmouth are a full day experience. You will generally be picked up from your accommodation around 7 or 8am, and return at 4/5pm.

The tour operator picks you up and drives you to the boat ramp located on the other side of the peninsula.

There are a lot of tour groups operating at the same time, so it will be quite busy. From here, you will get on a small boat to be taken out to the tour vessel.

What’s Provided on the Whale Shark Tour

The tour operators provide everything you need for the swim, including wet suits, snorkels and fins. Make sure you take a towel and a jumper, it can get chilly in the wind in between swims.

On the boat, you are given a safety briefing to ensure you know how to safely swim with the whale sharks. There are strict regulations that must be abided by. This includes how close you can swim, and how long groups spend with a single whale shark.

After the safety briefing, your tour head out to a calm spot for a practice swim with the snorkelling gear. Then, you will head out to the outer reef for the main event – swimming with the whale sharks!

The tour operators have a helicopter in the air looking for the whale sharks from above, to share the location via radio to the captain of your boat below.

whale shark swim tours exmouth

Heading further along the coast on your WA road trip? Check out my guide on the top free things to do in Broome, or complete guide to adventuring in Karijini National Park .

What to Expect on the Day

Groups of only 10 people (plus the tour guides) are allowed in the water at one time, and you will be told to wait until the whale shark approaches by your guide.

Your guide tells you when to put your head into the water to look as the whale shark swims past.

Once the whale shark passes, now you need to start swimming ! The whale sharks swim faster than you might expect, and it can be hard work to keep up with it.

It is an absolutely surreal experience to swim alongside these majestic creatures, and something you need to experience for yourself to fully appreciate.

During my swim with the whale sharks in the middle of May, we were lucky to swim with two different whale sharks. We had at least five swims with these whale sharks in total.

We spent a lot of time in the water swimming alongside the whale sharks thanks to our tour operator Live Ningaloo . Read on below for why I think Live Ningaloo offers the best whale shark tour in Exmouth.

Live Ningaloo Whale Shark Tour

Best Whale Shark Tours Exmouth

Here’s a quick summary of my recommendations for the best company to swim with whale sharks in Ningaloo. Keep reading below for details on each and the reasons for each of my recommendations.

Best Premium Tours

If you want the most time in the water swimming with the whale sharks, Live Ningaloo is the best whale shark tour in Exmouth and my pick for a premium experience.

Live Ningaloo are the only tour operator to have only 10 people on a tour – most operators will have 20 people on board. As there are only 10 people allowed in the water with the whale shark at any one time, the tours with 20 people are split into two groups and take turns in the water.

Choosing to take a tour with Live Ningaloo will mean you will maximise your time in the water with the whale sharks which was the most important factor for us.

Another tour operator that came highly recommended from my Instagram community was Ningaloo Discovery . The unique aspect about Ningaloo Discovery is you have a choice of boat or sailing catamaran for the tour.

whale shark swim tours exmouth

Both Ningaloo Discovery and Live Ningaloo provide transfers, equipment, meals and refreshments on board and their own spotter planes to get you the best chance of swimming with whale sharks.

Best of all, both companies have their own underwater professional photographer, with all photos from your tour provided to you for free as part of your package!

Not all tour operators provide photos free of charge, so make sure to check this beforehand.

On our Live Ningaloo tour, the owner of the company was our captain and his wife took our bookings. We felt super safe in their hands and could tell how much they respected the environment in which the operated in. They gave their utmost care to not only their human customers, but the whale sharks and other marine life too.

We ended the day celebrating with a glass of sparkling wine, sipping it while sharing stories of the day with other travellers and our tour guides.

whale shark swim tours exmouth

Best Affordable Tour

This whale shark tour is one of the best value for money tours.

With up to 20 guests on board, you’ll take turns swimming in groups of 10. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea is included, as well as a celebratory beer or sparkling wine to finish up your day.

Courtesy transfers are included, and free photos from the onboard photographer, making this the best affordable whale shark swim in Exmouth.

This option is best for families, as kids can rest in between the alternating group swims.

Cost of Ningaloo Reef Whale Shark Tours

It isn’t cheap to swim with the whale sharks in Western Australia, but it is worth every dollar .

After all, this is a bucket list activity! Due to the smaller group size, Live Ningaloo does have a slightly higher tour price of A$750 per person (2023 peak season pricing). Ningaloo Discovery offer catamaran tours for $545 per person.

For a more affordable option, this tour is $460 per adult and still includes free photos and courtesy pick up.

Other tour operators pricing starts around $400, but have less inclusions (like photographer) than the ones I’ve recommended above.

Swimming with Whale Shark Tips

Here are my tips to have the best possible experience when swimming with the whale sharks

Book your tour in advance and for your first day in Exmouth

As mentioned above, try and book your whale shark tour for your first full day in Exmouth. That way, if you don’t see them on your tour you have the opportunity to do the tour again, pending availability.

Bring sea sickness tablets

Even on a calm day it is possible to feel sea sickness, particularly if you are prone like me. I took sea sickness tablets on the bus on the way to the boat ramp which I was glad for later.

Leave the GoPro at home

Whilst some people on my tour with Live Ningaloo did bring the GoPros, I personally think you could leave it at home for the swim.

Firstly, because swimming with the whale sharks is quite an intense experience, and there is a lot going on in the water. To get the most out of the experience and be as present as possible, you can focus more on the whale sharks than taking photos and looking after the GoPro in the water.

Secondly, because you have a professional photographer with you the whole day, they are more likely to take better shots anyway!

The photographer on our Live Ningaloo tour made sure to take photos of each person with the whale shark (another benefit of the smaller group size), as well as lots of photos of the whale shark itself and other marine life we saw on the day.

Be physically prepared

I had been warned beforehand that the whale sharks swim quickly, and they were right! Once your tour guide says to start swimming, you have to start swimming and you can’t stop!

These gentle giants glide through the water, and if you don’t swim non-stop you will quickly fall behind and lose sight of the whale shark.

Take in different angles of the whale sharks

Make sure to swim alongside the whale shark at different angles to fully appreciate these beautiful creatures.

Whilst swimming alongside the whale shark was amazing, my favourite spot was behind the tail so you could fully appreciate the size and grace of the whale shark. Their large tails swaying from side to side was a mesmerising sight to behold!

Final Thoughts – Best Whale Shark Tour Exmouth

Swimming with Whale Sharks is an absolute bucket list item, and both my husband and I agree it was the most amazing experience. Whilst it isn’t a cheap activity, it is worth every dollar for an experience that you will truly never forget.

I had a fantastic experience with Live Ningaloo, and would definitely recommend them to visitors to Exmouth. Whilst they were more expensive than other tours, it was worth every penny to have a smaller group size which meant you maximized the time in the water swimming with the whale sharks. After all, that’s what you came here for right!

Wow what a fantastic blog you have Tess! Thank you for this amazing insight into the experience you had, it’s so valuable. We are planning a family trip for July 2023 (flying in from Adelaide) and would love to do this with our two daughters, I’m just wondering if you think this would be ok for a 10 year old to do (the older one is 14)? She is a confident swimmer, but as you can imagine $2k for a one day family activity is quite the investment! We are hiring a motorhome and driving from Perth to Exmouth (love your other blogs about this trip), and will have 20 days in total, can’t wait.

Hey Nicole, Sounds like an amazing family trip you have planned! On some of the bigger tour boats we saw kids of all ages – I’m pretty sure they provide pool noodles to help younger ones out. I think it’s worth checking with your tour provider and they can give you their expert advice. It is an investment but it truly is a bucket list activity that your family won’t forget! Thanks for your comments on the blog, and I’m glad the guides have been useful 🙂 Safe travels and happy exploring!

That sounds perfect, yes will definitely give them a call thank you.

Wondering if a non swimming passenger be charged the same ?

Hi Robert, I believe most of the companies that take groups of 20 have a reduced fee for non-swimmers – check out Ningaloo Discovery. I don’t think the company I went with (Live Ningaloo) offer this as they have a smaller group size. Happy adventuring! Tess

Your Guide to Whale Sharks at Ningaloo Reef

Every year, whale sharks, the world’s largest known fish, make their way to the peaceful waters off the coast of Exmouth in their quest for food.

Ningaloo Reef’s remarkable eco-system attracts hundreds of whale sharks with its abundance of naturally-occurring food that starts with the annual spawning of coral in March, and continues with the upwelling of nutrient-rich waters from the continental shelf that lies beneath Ningaloo. With plankton drifting closer to the surface, whale sharks gather en masse at Ningaloo to take advantage of easy, abundant feeding.

While whale sharks can grow to an impressive 15 meters in length, and have a mouth almost 1.5 meters wide, they pose no danger to humans. They are calm, slow moving, naturally curious fish that are undisturbed by snorkellers swimming in close proximity.

Whale sharks prefer warm and temperate seas, and while they can be found in several other locations around the world for a month or two, there is no place quite like Ningaloo Reef to meet naturally-feeding whale sharks in such a large congregation across such an extended season. You’ll be awestruck by their size and beauty.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Do whale sharks eat humans.

Not at all! Whale sharks are gentle giants of the sea and rarely even notice humans, let alone eat them.

They feed on small fish and other small animals like krill, and their throats are far too small to allow anything as large as a human in.

Whale sharks have never attacked humans and pose no threat to us. In fact, we are more of a potential danger to them than they are to us.

That being said, just to stay on the safe side, you’ll want to book a best whale shark tour Exmouth for the best experience.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A WHALE SHARK DIVE EXMOUTH?

While the inclusions slightly vary from tour to tour, they’re all pretty much the same, which are the essentials.

Hotel pick-up and drop-off are included, as well as quality snorkeling equipment, meals and snacks throughout the day, and an underwater photographer.

HOW MUCH DO EXMOUTH WHALE SHARK TOURS COST?

The Ningaloo Reef whale shark tours in Exmouth cost approximately $300 per person for diving tours and $50 per person for whale-watching tours.

Apart from the duration (diving tours last the whole day while whale-watching ones only last 2 hours), the main difference is that you’ll go underwater and play with the giants.

WHEN IS THE WHALE SHARK SEASON IN EXMOUTH?

The whale shark season in Exmouth starts in mid-March and runs until the end of September.

Tours usually start operating from March and continue through to the end of June in Coral Bay , and to the end of August in Exmouth.

Only some companies continue to operate until the end of September, so that’s something to take into consideration.

Whale sharks are wild animals in their natural habitat, so there is no guarantee that they will be present at any given time.

However, during the Exmouth whale shark tours season, the guides know exactly where to go to spot them, and they manage to do so almost all the time!

~4:30pm : Passengers dropped off in front of their accommodation in Exmouth

What to expect during your cruise:

Between 7:10am to 7:50am on the morning of your tour, you’ll be picked up from the front of your accommodation in our modern, airconditioned bus (specific times for each location stated with your booking). This is where is adventure starts!

During the next 30-45 minute bus-ride to Tantabiddi, where our whale shark tour boat departs from, our very friendly crew will be outlining fascinating facts about Exmouth, the Ningaloo Reef and the BIG THREE of the Ningaloo – humpback whales, whale sharks and manta rays. We’re also there to answer any questions you may have about your day, and to let you know that if you need help, you just have to ask.

Once at the boat ramp, you will jump onboard our tender vessel, and head out to board the Seazone, our very comfy whale shark tour boat.

Once on board the boat, the crew will kit you out with masks, fins and snorkels, ensuring comfort and fit. We also have plenty of stinger suits & short 5mm wetsuits to keep you warm, with kids sizes available too. We’ll then introduce ourselves, and give you a quick briefing about the boat, going through important safety information to keep you safe and comfortable throughout your cruise.

Once we’ve cast off our mooring lines, we head off into the Ningaloo Reef to search for humpback whales and other amazing marine life of the Ningaloo. The reef is one of the world’s largest fringing reef, with most of it located only a few hundred metres from shore. Our skipper will cruise along the inside of the reef towards the best snorkel site given the weather conditions on the day.

At the same time, our pilot is warming up the spotter plane’s engines and heading out to the Ningaloo Reef to find us whale sharks to swim with.

Once we are safely anchored, you’ll be jumping in, accompanied by the crew, to have your first snorkel of the day. We are aware that some of you may be experienced snorkelers while for others, you may just be starting out. Not a problem! All of our swim crew have a minimum rating of Divemaster or higher, and are dedicated to teach you how it is done. We’re aiming for every one of our guests to learn something new about snorkelling safely and effectively, with guests invited to ask questions and get feedback on how to improve specific aspects of your snorkelling technique.

You’ll then head off to check out the spectacular array of corals and fish near where the boat is anchored. When back onboard, its time for morning tea – usually a hot drink with fresh produce from the local bakery! Whilst you are sipping on your cuppa, our team will be demonstrating the whale shark code of conduct and what to expect when we find the biggest fish in the ocean!

As our own spotter plane searches for our big friends, we cruise down the outside of the reef soaking up the sights of the Cape Range National Park from the ocean, and encountering a very wide variety of spectacular marine life and birds. Turtles are often seen, taking a big breath before diving downwards to the floor of the ocean for minutes at a time. Flying fish jump out of the water and glide their way safely out of the way of the boat’s passage. Flocks of wedge-tailed shearwater bird bomb into the ocean with a spectacular splash, in their efforts to catch one of massive schools of fish.

In season, you could potentially also often see manta rays barrel-rolling (from May), and if we’re lucky, schools of up to 500 bottlenose, spinner and indo-pacific dolphins may race towards to boat, surround us and start leaping off our bow waves or our wake.

As soon as we get the call from the pilot that a whale shark has been spotted, its all systems go! We quickly finish whatever we are doing, and then the skipper heads the boat towards towards the shark’s location. There is a buzz in the air, and the excitement and anticipation mount amongst crew and passengers alike.

As the plane guides the skipper onto your whale shark, you will be split into two groups to jump into the water and swim with the shark. Most passengers are literally buzzing with excitement waiting and ready for your swim. Our crew is there to answer any last minute questions and provide assurance and support as necessary too.

Then with the shout of ‘go go go’, it’s time for you to jump into the water and get up close and personal to the magnificent whale shark.

After your first swim with a whale shark, you may find yourself smiling and cheering at the exhilaration of swimming with these magnificent creatures. The best part is, on most tours we run, you can jump back in and do it again and again! Our photographer is always there, taking photos of the sharks and other marine life, and you on your cruise, committed to trying to capture photos that capture your whale shark tour experience for you to keep forever and share with friends. Once all passengers have agreed we’ve had enough time swimming with our first (or second or third!) shark, and we are needing a rest and some sustenance, we head back to the inside of the reef where we can relax and eat lunch, prepared fresh that morning by the lovely cooks at Bundegi Beach Shack. More fascinating stories about the Ningaloo and Exmouth, indigenous Australians and the amazing history of the area are told by staff during lunch. Snorkelling off the back of the boat or lazing around in the sun may follow.

We then head off to our favourite afternoon snorkel spot, where the excitement doesn’t stop. You often get the chance to see some of the many species of turtles, rays, sharks, sea snakes and huge schools of fish, sometimes even a dugong of two!

If you are already certified and would like to have a fun dive with one of our guides, we have all equipment on board ready to go and you can experience the Ningaloo from below. If you have never dived before and would love to have another new experience, our highly experienced diving instructors will guide you through everything from equipment and how to use it, safety techniques so you can relax and enjoy the experience, to moving through the water with ease! You’ll get the chance to experience for yourself what scuba diving is like, and why so many people make such a big fuss about diving and seeing the marine wonderland under the ocean’s surface.

As the day comes to a finish and we cruise back, you can relax as we serve a fruit platter, a glass of bubbles or a glass of soft drink for the kiddies to celebrate the day and achieving something only a few people ever get to experience!

Then its back ashore via our tender, and onto our bus for the drive back to Exmouth. After more briefings about the area and its amazing, unique history, whale research, we drop each customer back to the front door of their accommodation, with our best wishes for their holidays, and our hope that they had one of the best days out on tour ever!

And if you are wanting to hear more stories about the Ningaloo and living in Exmouth, don’t be afraid to invite our crew down to the pub for a drink either!

Whether you’re traveling with friends during spring break or taking a vacation with your sweetheart, Cancun offers stunning beaches, luxury resorts , and rich local culture for travelers to enjoy.

Explore Downtown Cancun

Many travelers like to avoid spending time in crowded urban areas while on vacation. That isn’t the case in Cancun.

Downtown Cancun―a.k.a. El Centro―is full of local culture, from delicious food to street art to open markets and beautiful public parks. The best way to experience downtown is by hopping on the city bus and wandering around on foot.

El Parque del Las Palapas is one of the main attractions in the city. It offers a glimpse into the city’s traditions mixed with the modern culture of it’s thriving community. The large outdoor plaza features handcrafted artwork and souvenirs, an outdoor food court, and a playground space for children and families. If you stop by on weekend evenings, you can catch live music and other events that make El Parque del Las Palapas a hub.

Swim With Whale Sharks

You may be familiar with “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel, but how about swimming with whale sharks off the coast of Mexico?

Although a whale shark is technically a fish, they’re still impressive animals that weigh around 20,000 pounds and have more than 350 rows of teeth. You can dive into the Caribbean Sea and snorkel or swim alongside the largest fish in the ocean by joining one of many tours throughout the Cancun area.

Several whale shark tours provide transportation and meals for your day trip out on the water. You might also see other marine life like dolphins and turtles who frequent the area and add to the excitement of exploring the Yucatan coast.

You may never get the chance to swim with whale sharks again, so you might as well go for it.

So far, this list of things to do in Hawaii includes activities both on land and in the sky. But we haven’t dived below the surface yet, and that’s where so much of Hawaii’s beauty lies.

Hawaii’s crystal clear waters are filled with colorful fish, calm turtles, playful dolphins, endangered monk seals, and much more. It’s a completely different world!

You can easily spend hours in some of Hawaii’s best snorkeling spots, like Hanauma Bay on Oahu, Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island, and Molokini off the coast of Maui.

That said, be sure to give the sea life their space, as you would with all wild animals.

Swim at a Cenote

Wondering what a cenote is? A cenote is a natural sinkhole, often filled with water, that creates a pool or reservoir.

The Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the longest underground cave systems connecting the cenotes. In Cancun alone, dozens of cenotes draw thousands of visitors to their startling blue waters each year.

Enjoy snorkeling, swimming, and cliff diving into the picturesque waters at one of the cenotes throughout Cancun. But remember, be careful and always practice safe exploration. They are, after all, sinkholes.

Tour the San Miguelito Ruins

As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, ancient Mayan sites attract visitors from across the globe. At the San Miguelito Ruins , you can tour the structures and pyramids of this historic location, separated into four main groups―the North Complex, the South Complex, the Chaak Palace, and the Dragon Complex.

View hieroglyphics of animals, learn about the indigenous plants in the surrounding area, and explore the architectural design the Mayans used to construct their buildings.

One of the most iconic structures at the San Miguelito Ruins is the Chaak Palace, dedicated to the Mayan god, Chaak. It sits on the north side of a small plaza and features the face of Chaak on all sides of the building. Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the grounds and step back into the world of one of the greatest civilizations to exist.

Try a Temazcal Ritual

Dating back to the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, a temazcal ritual is a purification ceremony led by a shaman through four stages of purification. The ceremony cleanses your mind, body, and soul in an enclosed structure, symbolizing the womb and the sense of transformation and rebirth. Keep in mind, that the ceremony involves intense heat and steam to purify your body, representing the difficulties one faces in life.

In Cancun, visitors can book temazcal rituals to experience the ceremony with a local shaman. There are options for group rituals or private ceremonies, which may be a worthwhile investment if you’re traveling with a loved one and want to share this experience.

If you have the opportunity, participating in a temazcal ritual can offer healing and revitalization as you continue your journey toward personal growth.

LaPaz Whale Shark Tour - Snorkel with Whale Sharks

Swim with the largest fish in the sea.

Join us for a LaPaz whale shark tour!

We highly recommend that you include a day during your Baja vacation to snorkel with whale sharks in Mexico’s Bay of La Paz. Set off in a motor-skiff to observe and swim alongside the whale sharks, the largest fish in the world!

Sign Up Early! It's critical that you sign up well in advance so that we can confirm our departure with Baja Park authorities. The permits to swim with whale sharks are highly restricted and limited. If you are planning a sea kayak or whale watching trip with us, please ask our Adventure Consultants about these tours at the time you sign up. Our tours adhere to and support all regulations regarding swimming with whale sharks and we conduct these tours with the utmost respect for these magnificent fish, following all protocols designed to protect them.

We depart from a La Paz marina and travel about 45 minutes to the whale shark swimming zone, a designated area where the whale sharks are feeding and swimming. On our way you prepare by putting on a wetsuit, fins, mask and snorkel. Once a whale shark is spotted, you slide off of our skiff under the direction of your guide. This is your chance to swim alongside the ocean’s gentle giants. Watch their gaping mouths engulf mass amounts of plankton as they slowly glide along. The juvenile whale sharks in La Paz are a whopping 4-8 meters (12-24 feet) long with mouths that yawn open over 4-5 feet, yet they’re no Moby Dick with their mild disposition. It’s rare to experience something as awe-inspiring as swimming alongside these mammoth, polka-dotted creatures that course the Gulf of California.

A talented local, National Park-certified whale shark guide accompanies you on your swim. Their knowledge and passion for whale sharks is obvious as they work to make your time swimming in La Paz educative, meaningful, and memorable.

Our one-day whale shark tours are the perfect complement to our LaPaz based kayaking adventures and pair perfectly before or after our Espiritu Santo or Isla San Jose tours. Again, because this is a highly regulated activity, please sign up as far in advance as possible. Watch the video below to learn more about this amazing activity.

LaPaz Whale Shark Tour

What to Expect:

Many people describe snorkeling with whale sharks as exhilarating and humbling, but most of all memorable. There are few places in the world where you can observe whale sharks in the wild, even less where you can actually get in the water and experience them up close and personal. Our whale shark tours are based out of LaPaz where these gentle giants flock to the plankton rich waters of the Bay of LaPaz. We depart from a designated marina in LaPaz at a specified time, which is determined when we get our Park permit. Usually this is early in the morning, but we will inform you the day before of the exact time. The trip takes about 4-5 hours, depending on a variety of factors. Snacks are included in your outing as well as the full services of our talented interpretive guides. (If you want to see what it's really like, check out this video of snorkeling with whale sharks )

Your Guides:

To share and guide you in this exhilarating experience you will be accompanied by our National Park-certified bilingual, professional, educated, fun, and experienced guides. Our guides are the best in the business and are committed to ensuring you have the time of your life on this incredible adventure. In addition they are trained in interpretive guiding and share educational information about whale sharks, LaPaz and other marine life in the Gulf of California, also known as the Vermillion Sea.

What to Bring:

 • Swimsuit (It's efficient and convenient if you dress with your swimsuit on or under your clothes)
 • Clothing with sun protection. Rashguards work great to wear under your PFD if wet suits are not needed.
 • Waterbottle

Conservation Partnership:

Please note that $5 of your trip fee is donated to Whale Shark Mexico , a leading conservation and research organization focused on education and sustainable management of whale sharks.

New Restrictions per Mexico National Parks:

This activity is very well managed by the Park and marine authorities of Mexico. There has to be a minimum number of whale sharks in the area before it is opened for swimming with them. There is a strict limit to the number of boats that can enter the whale shark-protected zone. These regulations have changed every year in the past few years and are generally getting more and more restrictive. Therefore it's of paramount importance that you sign up as well in advance as possible.

All vessels must be equipped with a GPS tracking system and communicate with a monitoring authority via radio before entering the whale shark grounds. Once entering the whale shark grounds, vessels have between 1.5 and 2 hours to remain in the area before they must leave.

Weather - If the area is too windy and/or there are waves that are too large, we cannot operate these trips. Be prepared for the possibility of last-minute cancellations. See our Cancellation and Refunds policy for these trips below.

Dates & Rates

Supplementary information.

Please note: $140 per person price is for groups of 4+. For groups of 2-3 a $50 per person surcharge applies.

*Our one day whale shark tours make an excellent addition to our LaPaz based kayaking adventures and pair perfectly before or after our Espiritu Santo or Isla San Jose tours. Just tell your Adventure Consultant you would like to snorkel with Whale Sharks as part of your tour and we'll get everything set up for you!

Price Per Person: Groups of 2- 3

 • $5 of your trip fee is donated to Whale Shark Mexico , a leading conservation and research organization focused on education and sustainable management of whale sharks.

Price Per Person: Groups of 4 -10

Includes:

 • Professional bilingual guides that provide a high-quality educational experience
 • An up-close, personal encounter with peaceful whale sharks
 • Coaching and instruction in snorkeling from our guides
 • Certified Captain
 • All snorkeling equipment (Wetsuits, snorkel, mask and fins)
 • Clean drinking water

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS: If Park Regulations change because of a lack of whale sharks in the area and we are not able to perform the tour, we provide a 100% refund. Be aware that weather sometimes prevents us from being able to operate the whale shark trips as planned. We will try and find a substitute time in this case. If we cannot leave the harbor on the morning of your trip, a full refund will be granted. If we depart from the harbor and then discover that the waves are too big and/or the wind too strong for a positive trip experience, we will return to the harbor and provide a 60% refund of that portion of the trip fee allocated to the whale shark experience.

Everything was perfect!

I’m at the airport in Loreto. I don’t want to go home. I had such a good time here and the whole trip. Tico and Reuben were simply the best. Is there a way to email them to let them know how much I appreciated all they did for us, now that I’ve processed for a couple days? They were so kind and funny and relaxed and knowledgeable. Experts for sure. I get emotional thinking about the kindness they showed. They must answer the same questions 100s of times per season but their answers make it feel like I’m the first person to bring it up. The food was amazing, and fresh caught snapper, OMG. So sweet. They worked so hard for us and made it look easy. Sea lions were so funny. I laughed through my snorkel. And swimming with a school of sardines was pretty thrilling too. It’s going to be hard going back to -8°F. We are already thinking of friends to ask for next year. Everything turned out perfect!

GREAT GUIDE! ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

For a family of 6, this was an amazing experience. Sea Kayak Adventures offers the best service of all the companies out there. Our guide was a Marine Biologist. Our boat captain was so knowledgable and also acted as a guide. He knew where to go and a lot about the whale sharks. We had an amazing day!

Most Amazing Experience!!

My husband and I added this trip on to a kayaking trip with Row Adventures and we were so glad we did not miss this amazing experience. We were the only guests on the boat with two guides so they were completely attentive to our experience. The boat was large and they had all of the necessary snorkeling equipment and ensure that we were fitted properly. It is truly amazing to jump into the water knowing that this EXTREMELY large creature is there, but our guide made us completely comfortable. We were able to locate several whale sharks and got to swim alongside of them for quite a while. We got some great video and close up pictures of the large mouth! One of the best days ever!!

Faq & more, do i need to sign up well in advance for swimming with whale sharks.

YES! Due to the limited number of boats allowed into the whale shark protected zone each day, it's critical you sign up as far in advance as possible

Do I have to go sea kayaking with you to sign up for this trip?

No. We welcome sign ups from anyone, whether you are participating in one of our sea kayaking or whale watching trips or not.

How long is the boat ride from the marina to the designated swimming area?

The boat ride is between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours long depending on where we enter the whale shark swimming area which is a protected zone.

Can I touch the whale sharks?

To adhere to local regulations, touching the whale sharks is prohibited. A whale shark may swim close to you and possible brush your skin, but in the chance that happens, we ask that you do not lend out a hand to add additional impact or disturbance to these creatures.

When is the season to swim with whale sharks?

The best season to swim with whale sharks is Fall through Spring. November through April being the best months.

If I have never snorkeled before, is this tour a good choice for me?

If you have never been snorkeling before we would strongly recommend you find a place to practice before this tour. You want to be comfortable with a mask and snorkel and be able to swim while breathing through a snorkel.

Are whale sharks dangerous?

Whale sharks are generally considered to be gentle and non-threatening to humans. They are filter feeders, mainly consuming plankton and small fish, and their feeding behavior poses little risk to people. They do not show any interest in preying on humans. It's always essential to approach any interaction with wildlife, including whale sharks, with caution and respect.

What are your Terms and Conditions?

Please see our full Terms & Conditions HERE.

I'm not a strong swimmer. Can I still go on this tour?

Swimming with the whale sharks can be physically demanding if they are moving along at a moderate pace. Sometimes the whale sharks are not swimming much themselves, in which case you can get relatively close (never closer than 6.5' or 2 meters), without as much effort. But if the whale sharks are feeding and swimming at the same time, they move at a pace that requires active use of your legs and fins.
