Chicago’s Best River And Lake Cruises By Correspondent Lauren Viera

June 27, 2013

what's the best chicago river cruise

There are few activities more enjoyable — or more quintessentially Chicago — than a sunny float down the Chicago River or a twilight cruise on Lake Michigan. Summer is prime boating season both for locals who stow their ships in the city’s 10 harbors and for visitors looking to get a glimpse of the incredible skyline from a different perspective. Here are our picks for the best river and lake cruises in town:

Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady

This is the crowd favorite. In its 20th season, this 90-minute river cruise floats at a photogenic pace through the heart of Chicago’s downtown with postcard-worthy views of skyscrapers and historic buildings. Departing from Michigan Avenue, each cruise is staffed with a well-versed docent from the Chicago Architecture Foundation, offering non-stop factoids of the buildings in plain view. New this summer is a special weekend morning Capture Chicago Photography version of the CAF cruise, with select stopping points along the way to nail the perfect picture. Tickets: $46.54.

Wendella’s Chicago at Sunset Cruise

The season’s long days yield later sunsets falling within the 8 o’clock hour — the right window for a cocktail cruise with a sunset behind the Chicago skyline. This cruise boards from the Wendella dock near the Wrigley Building and makes its way to Lake Michigan just in time to catch the sunset from a picture-perfect perspective. After you’ve gotten your sunset fill, the boat travels south to the famous Buckingham Fountain to take in its spectacular water and light display. Tickets: $26.60.

Chicago History Museum Cruises with Chicago Line

For those who prefer to brush up on Chicago history while cruising, the best floating classroom belongs to the Chicago History Museum, whose daily rides are operated by Chicago Line Cruises. Basic Chicago history and architecture tours are offered regularly, and special theme cruises — such as the history of brewing in Chicago — are sprinkled throughout the season. These cruises board from the pretty North Pier Docks behind the River East Art Center. Tickets: $43.60.

Mystic Blue Chicago Fireworks Dinner Cruise Offering a literal bang for your buck are Mystic Blue’s fireworks dinner cruises, which correlate with the twice-weekly (Wednesday and Saturday) fireworks displays at Navy Pier, from which it departs. These evening cruises are a bit longer — three hours in all — and include a light buffet-style dinner, a cash bar and live entertainment. Bring your dancing shoes for this one. Tickets: starting at $135.87.

Don't miss: Take a break along the urban beachfront, with the chance to also rent stand-up paddle boards.

Lake Michigan Buffet Brunch Cruise

10.  Lake Michigan Buffet Brunch Cruise

Grab a group of friends and book a table – ideally one with a window-facing view—for a buffet-style meal before making your way to the dancefloor for an evening of DJ-curated music. Unlimited coffee, tea, and water will be on hand.

Don't miss: Creative signature cocktails at the bar.

Lake Michigan Odyssey Gourmet Lunch Cruise

11.  Lake Michigan Odyssey Gourmet Lunch Cruise

The Odyssey's lunch cruise includes a three-course meal and all the coffee, hot tea, iced tea and water you can drink. Visit the cash bar to buy wine, beer and cocktails and enjoy the views on this two-hour tour.

Don't miss: Dance on the top deck to tunes played out by the onboard DJ.

Hosted on the bright red Fred A. Busse Fireboat – which served the Chicago Fire Department until 1981 – this architectural tour of the Chicago River lasts anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. A docent will fill you in on the history of buildings lining the river as well as the story of the boat you've boarded, which formerly traveled the city's waterways to fight fires.

Don't miss: Check out the vintage firefighting artifacts and photos on board.

Lady Grebe Chicago River Experience

13.  Lady Grebe Chicago River Experience

The reservation comes with a premium drinks package and you can also opt to kick things up a notch with picnic baskets full of food or full-service catering.

Don't miss:  Book a Chicago Architecture Center docent to give a guided tour for an educational twist.

Chicago Electric Boat Company Tour

14.  Chicago Electric Boat Company Tour

Go your own way. Be your own captain. That’s what’s on offer with this Chicago River tour. The Chicago Electric Boat Company lets passengers steer the ship themselves (if they’ve got a valid driver’s license and watched a 10-minute tutorial, that is), allowing total freedom on the Windy City’s waterways. If you’re looking to still have some kind of tour, you can hire a personal tour guide—and we haven’t even gotten to the best bit. These boats are all electric, so they’re a little bit more environmentally friendly, too.

Don't miss: Hot tub boat rentals are also available.

Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady

15.  Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady

There's a reason the Chicago Architecture Foundation's beloved tour has been named the Best Boat Tour in the U.S.  The center’s official tour goes into detail on more than 50 buildings both on the riverfront and beyond. In doing so, they give a fascinating history of the city and those that built it—plus you can easily upgrade your ticket to include entry to just Chicago Architecture Center itself. It’s a proper design enthusiast’s dream. This one leaves from the Chicago First Lady Cruises dock and lasts around 90 minutes.

Don't miss:  Gather friends for the serene evening cruise for just a few dollars more.

Chicago Dinner Cruise Tour Reviews

1. chicago gourmet brunch, lunch, or dinner river cruise.

  • Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Chicago River Esplanade
  • Departure Time: 6:30 PM
  • Includes:   2-hour cruise,  3-course meal,  Unlimited coffee, hot tea, and iced tea,  Onboard DJ (for dinner cruises),  Architectural narration (for lunch and brunch cruises),  Navy Pier fireworks (on Wednesdays and Saturdays)

The great thing about this cruise, is that you get to choose between a lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch option.

I tried the weekend brunch as I love a good mimosa and had tried plenty of other evening cruises, already. The Chicago: Gourmet Brunch, Lunch, or Dinner River Cruise  is a fantastic outing for a large group, with attentive staff, delicious food, and of course, amazing views!

We arrived at the Chicago River Esplanade, which is actually one of my favorite places to stroll around whenever I’m in the city.

The Chicago Riverwalk offers amazing views of the surrounding buildings, and as every single one has such history behind the unique styles, it’s that much more interesting.

I was lucky, because the weather that day was warm and sunny, with the glittering water reflecting the buildings on the banks. This is a fine dining experience, which means if you’re looking for an opportunity to wear a nice dress or suit, this is the perfect chance!

Upon arrival, we were escorted onboard the ship and led to our table in the dining area which was nice to know we had a table reserved.

Expand To See More See Less

The glass enclosure was perfect as I know Chicago weather can get pretty intense without much notice, plus it allowed for fantastic views without obstructing anything.

We sipped on some cocktails as the onboard DJ played some lovely music before we were served our brunch of salmon toast, French toast, chicken, yogurt parfaits, cheesecake, mud pie, and much more!

Keep in mind this is a 3-course meal, which I felt was nicely timed and had a cohesive menu that worked well together. While I didn’t take the dinner cruise, I have also heard great reviews, as some nights even include fireworks!

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: 600 E Grand Ave, Chicago
  • Departure Time: 7:00 PM
  • Includes: Fireworks Display if weather permitting, Dinner, Live entertainment, Coffee and/or Tea

Speaking of fireworks, this next tour is perfect for enjoying the exciting light show right over Lake Michigan! I find this tour to be perfect for celebrating important dates like anniversaries, birthdays, and much more!

The Chicago Fireworks Dinner Cruise with Buffet Tour  will not only treat you to stunning panoramic vistas of the city skyline, but a fully enchanting experience that’ll light up the night sky with dazzling colors.

Meeting on Grand Ave, it’s super easy to get to – especially if you’re already staying in the Loop or Miracle Mile! We were escorted onto the vessel, the  Spirit of Chicago,  by very polite, friendly, organized staff who genuinely paid attention and made sure we were all having a great time.

We got seated and enjoyed some unlimited coffee and tea (believe I definitely took advantage of that!) and took some photos before we set off!

We were given essentially front-row seats to a spectacular fireworks display with choreographed sequences that sprinkled just a bit more magic to an already unforgettable night out.

Of course, if it’s really windy or rainy, this may not be possible, but in our case it was! The onboard DJ was a nice touch, adding even more fun and excitement, complete with dance areas for us to hang out and get our groove on!

The unlimited buffet was surprisingly delicious – I’m typically a bit wary of buffets as I feel like most of the food is unforgettable, but this wasn’t the case.

I highly recommend the oven-baked Atlantic flounder filet and the red velvet and chocolate chip brownie! This was such a fun way to see Chicago’s famous architecture while celebrating out with loved ones!

3. Chicago Premier Dinner Cruise on Lake Michigan

  • Duration:  2.5 hours
  • Includes: Dinner cruise on Lake Michigan, 3-course plated dinner with attentive tableside service, unlimited coffee, hot tea, iced tea, and water, guaranteed table for your party size, onboard DJ entertainment and dance floor, service charges, local taxes and fees

If you’re looking for a luxurious way to spend an evening in Chicago or the perfect date night activity, check out this next tour!

Seamlessly combining delicious food with unparalleled views of the city’s skyline, the Chicago Premier Dinner Cruise on Lake Michigan is spectacular.

It’s almost like hanging out in a swanky lounge in an exclusive vessel gliding along the tranquil waters of Lake Michigan as you indulge in an exquisite dining experience!

This cruise is easy to access, with the crew immediately escorting us onboard and answering any questions we had along the way. Offering an unparalleled vantage point, we had plenty of time before setting sail to take photos and enjoy the glow of the setting sun.

I do recommend dressing up for the evening as everyone else was dressed quite nicely, which made sense considering our vessel for the evening was a luxury yacht!

I loved the “smaller” details, like the fact that we received a personal welcome from the captain and crew, and even had our photo taken by the yacht’s photographer to add to the experience.

I also appreciated that we had our own private table as opposed to sitting in crowded areas like many other tours involve. Our servers also introduced themselves and frankly offered much better service than the vast majority of upscale restaurants I’ve been to.

The 3-course, plated dinner was absolutely amazing, complete with plenty of drinks from the full-service bar and an impressive wine list I definitely took advantage of!

The onboard DJ was mixing a fantastic selection of jazz and more contemporary songs as we explored the observation deck and the Captain’s bridge! This was such a beautiful tour that I plan on taking again, when I’m looking for a special night out.

4. Chicago: Lake Michigan Buffet Brunch, Lunch or Dinner Cruise

  • Duration:  2 hours
  • Departure:  Varies (depending on option booked)
  • Departure Time: 12:30 PM
  • Includes:   Cruise on the Spirit of Chicago,  Buffet brunch, lunch, or dinner (based on option selected),  Onboard DJ,  Dance floor,  Onboard games,  Unlimited coffee, hot tea, and iced tea,  Service fee

This next tour is really similar to our first one, offering the option to select between brunch, lunch, or dinner. It’s also a bit shorter than the others at just 2 hours, making it super easy to fit into a busy schedule.

The Chicago: Lake Michigan Buffet Brunch, Lunch or Dinner Cruise  is not quite as “fancy” as some of the others I’ve detailed, but it’s a load of fun and a great way to make some friends!

I’d been to Chicago many times but hadn’t gone to Navy Pier until recently, and wondered why it took me so long! It’s super easy to access, and has such a fun vibe, with all kinds of sites to take in and beautiful waterside views.

Once we arrived, we were escorted onto our vessel, receiving a personal greeting and having our photos taken by the ship’s photographer to keep a little memento before they led us to our private table.

This was another buffet-type setting, which I quite enjoyed as there were many plates I liked enough that I went back for seconds and thirds!

The unlimited coffee was a nice addition, and it was surprisingly fresh, which made a big difference to me as a coffee fiend.

Viewing the Willis Tower, Trump Tower, and many other iconic pieces of architecture was simply phenomenal while sipping on my cup of Joe and taking in the views.

This adventure also had a DJ on board, who did a fantastic job at selecting a variety of different songs that seemed to get everyone up and moving!

The 3 climate-controlled decks ensured there was enough room for everyone while offering viewing spaces no matter what the weather. I recommend this tour if you’re looking for a casual, more “party” experience with some yummy food and amazing views!

5. Premier Chicago River Dinner Cruise

  • Departure: 455 N Cityfront Plaza Dr, Chicago
  • Includes:  Dinner cruise on Chicago River, 3-course plated dinner, unlimited coffee/hot tea/iced tea, guaranteed table, service fees, local taxes

I’m not one to turn down a fabulous evening of dining and sightseeing, and the Premier Chicago River Dinner Cruise Tour is one of the best options for just that!

This 3-hour excursion takes you on a beautiful voyage through the heart of Chicago’s architectural wonders by means of the stunning Chicago River. The river itself is packed full of history, not to mention the unique structures on either side – all of which you’ll learn about as you cruise on.

The Cityfront Plaza address is very easy to get to if you’re staying downtown, and you can get there by foot, car, metro, and so on as it’s right on the Esplanade by the NBC Tower.

Once we were there, we were welcomed onboard by the amazing staff. The vessel is one of the smaller ones I’d been on in Chicago, but it was very well-maintained, pretty, and comfortable, with an open-air deck and climate-controlled interior deck.

Once we got started, we were regaled with interesting stories about the history of Chicago, as well as important information as certain landmarks and pieces of architecture as we cruised.

Soon enough, we were served the first dish of our 3-course plated dinner, along with plenty of complimentary coffee, hot tea, and iced tea.

They did have an open bar with alcoholic beverages available at an extra cost, but I found the cocktails to be high-quality and tasty.

I found everything to be very well-organized, with the captain and crew directing us to our deck depending on the table option we booked.

With an onboard DJ, we got to soak in the breathtaking views of the river and great Chicago landmarks while listening to a wonderful soundtrack. If you’re looking for a relatively short yet impactful tour, I can’t recommend this one enough!

Best Cruises to Book: Top Considerations

Different types of cruises vary in cost, from river cruises to mega-ship cruising to yacht cruising and beyond.

Ocean and river cruises , for example, have similarities yet differ in amenities and dining options. They tend to target different ages and types of travelers. Additionally, the ship size helps determine what ports they can stop at.

Maybe you cruised once and didn't like it, yet something has piqued your curiosity again. We truly believe there is a cruise for everyone! If you tried a huge ship and didn't love it, seek out small ship cruises. Or vice versa.

The ship size is one of the top considerations to start exploring the best cruise to book. That will also determine where you look for a cruise.

Start Your Best Cruises Search by Size

We recommend trying different varieties of size cruise ships. Try a small or medium-sized ship if you took a cruise on a large ship in the past.

You can consider a cruise line with 500 passengers, for example (like Hurtigruten ), or go even smaller, like 200-passenger river cruise ships (like Emerald Cruises ). You can even go smaller and try yacht cruises !

We have included resources for you if you're unsure of what size cruise to book. Or, you can reach out to our preferred travel agents to have a conversation about it.

Mega-Cruise Ships

Larger ships, which are the most readily available and approachable for families and couples overall, have thousands of passengers. Sometimes, they have upwards of 1,000 to 4,000 guests depending on the cruise line and ship. And cruise lines seem to be outdoing themselves, making them bigger and larger every year.

Because of their size, mega ships often have sizeable fitness centers/gyms, big spas offering many treatments from massages to teeth-whitening, and multiple pools and hot tubs.

Here are our top three places to look for current prices and offerings if you're going to look up cruise vacations on big ships:

  • Cruise Direct
  • Cruise Critic

Small Ship Cruises

On the contrary, river and yacht cruises usually have one pool, max, and one or two spa treatment rooms. Some ships don't have a pool at all. Some cruise ships have gyms, while others don't. A good example is Emerald Cruises vs. Viking – Emerald Cruises river cruise ships have a gym and a pool, and Viking Longships do not have either.

A small cruise may be perfect for a couple traveling abroad, wanting to experience something special and more intimate. In this case, river cruises, barge cruises , and expedition cruises are the perfect cruises to consider. These cruises travel to unique destinations.

Take an eco-focused cruise to Alaska , a journey to Antarctica , or a river cruise to the wine region of Portugal on the Douro River.

But depending on your needs, desires, and preferences, often the favorable guest-to-crew ratio and intimacy of a small cruise is just what you need for your best cruise vacation.

When we sailed on Star Clipper , there was one small massage room on the top deck. But it was perfect, and the massage was incredibly affordable. It was just what we needed.

Ports to Consider for the Best Cruises

Maybe you want to go to big ports, like in Barcelona, Spain, Marseille, France , or Nassau in the Bahamas. These are big cruise ports that larger ships go to. Or, say you want to go to small, lesser-known European destinations that only river cruise ships can dock at.

The ports you have in mind may inform your decision of the best cruises for you. Additionally, if you don't have a passport or want to stay very close to home in the United States, consider a closed – loop cruise itinerary.

United States Embarkation Ports

One of the benefits of going on a cruise from the United States is that you can potentially drive to the port or quickly fly there from within the country. (Don’t forget to check if you need a passport if your cruise heads to other ports outside of the USA.)

US cruise ports are plentiful! There are dozens of ports over the coastal United States, from California and Florida to Maryland, New York, and South Carolina.

Five of the most popular ones that are all near major airports and highways are the cruise ports of:

  • Seattle, Washington
  • San Diego, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Miami, Florida
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida

All major cruise lines have a cruise leaving from one of the ports above.

If you're gravitating towards the idea of a United States River Cruises, it will surely leave from a United States port. Some are even inland, like along the Mississippi River or Tennessee River.

International Cruise Ports

If you want to sail in other countries or even continents, when considering the best cruises, consider cruises that sail through Europe, Asia, or South America.

Great cruise itineraries sail the coast of places like Chile, Japan, and the UK. You usually have to start somewhere outside of the United States for this, though some cruises that start in the USA sail to Mexico and Central America.

A Central America cruise may stop in Panama (and even go through the Panama Canal), Costa Rica, or Belize. A popular Mexico port of call on the east coast is Cozumel, and Porto Vallarta is popular on the west coast .

As an example, we sailed on Celebrity Apex from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and we stopped at Belize City, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman. Another example was when we were able to go to three continents in eight days during a Celestyal Cruises vacation.

Destination Ports of Call

Suppose you are interested in a cruise that goes to a particular region of the United States, North America, or the world. In that case, you will want to search by destination or embarkation port.

Examples are:

  • For a cruise to Baja California (which sails into Mexico), leave Los Angeles.
  • Do you want to cruise to Alaska ? Search for cruises that leave from Seattle, Washington.
  • If you want to sail to the Caribbean, you’ll likely depart from the Port of Miami, Tampa, or Fort Lauderdale. This is because they are all Florida ports.
  • Are you cruising to the Great Lakes ? You’ll want to leave from the Midwest or Northeast, including Chicago and Boston.
  • If you want to sail to the Mediterranean, in Europe, search for a cruise that leaves from Barcelona, Spain.

Best Cruise Lines to Consider

The best cruise lines are likely all names you’ve heard, even if you’ve never been on a cruise. However, if you’re starting to look into the world of cruising, some may be new to you!

Mega-Ship Cruise Lines to Look into for Your Next Cruise Vacation

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Viking Ocean Cruises (they have a popular river cruise line too)
  • Holland America Line
  • Virgin Voyages

Small Cruise Lines to Consider for Your Next Cruise

  • Emerald Cruises
  • Alaskan Dream Cruises
  • Maple Leaf Adventures
  • American Queen Voyages
  • American Cruise Lines
  • AmaWaterways
  • European Waterways
  • Hurtigruten
  • Linblad (including National Geographic cruises)
  • SeaDream Yacht Club
  • Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection

Cruise Pricing

The search criteria on any cruise's or third-party cruise-booking website contains the categories we shared above. However, there are more factors for you when you determine the best cruise to book. Price is a result that pops up in search results, affecting which cruise you book for your next vacation.

Cruise prices will vary based on the following factors:

  • Length of the cruise.
  • Cruise destinations (or ports the cruise visits).
  • The season you’re sailing.
  • How many guests are in your cabin or stateroom. (Most cruise lines allow two adults and two children, maximum.)
  • Category of stateroom you book: inside, outside view, balcony or suite, for instance.

For small cruise ships, the price may also vary depending on the supply and demand. This is true for larger cruise ships too (especially for seasonal demand) but with smaller cruise ships, the smaller the ship and the more in demand the cruise line or itinerary, the more money the cruise.

Read more about what's included with river cruises , in particular.

Best CruiseS Prioritize Health and Safety

If you are concerned about the number of people on a cruise ship, we would argue that cruising is one of the safest ways to travel . This was true pre-pandemic and remains true now.

We have always appreciated the measures cruise lines take to ensure it is the safest way to travel.

This includes sanitization of the ship, cleaning all areas of the vessel, and the lengths they go to report these methods to the public. No other travel industry sector does so much, so publicly for its guests.

Additional Factors to Consider When Deciding What Cruise Is for You

Other factors may influence your decision about what cruise you book, which you may not have previously considered.

Deciding what amenities or bonuses you desire before booking your cruise is important. The following few sections will provide helpful tips when considering a cruise vacation.

Travel Agent Kickbacks and Perks

If you book a cruise with a travel agent, there is the potential to get an onboard stateroom credit to use on the ship. Many people use the credit for things like cocktails, dining reservations, or spa treatments.

Ready to Book Your Cruise or INquire?

Use our preferred travel advisors, bolds travel, because….

  • They take away the hassle of travel planning : time spent on the phone with the cruise line could be time you spend doing other things.
  • You don't pay them a dime : their service is free (this is because they get paid by the cruise line or destination).
  • Their experience: They have decades of experience and attention to detail.

Loyalty Programs

If you’re the type of person who likes to be rewarded for loyalty, consider cruise lines that reward repeat cruisers.

For example, Disney Cruise Line has its “ Castaway Club ,” and Princess has its Captain’s Circle. Some enrollment is automatic after your first cruise, and others you have to sign up for.

Ship-within-a-Ship Cruises

The ship-within-a-ship cruise category is for cruisers who want a large ship’s amenities, activities, and entertainment but the exclusive treatment of smaller cruises.

These are clubs, of sorts, within a cruise you book before you reserve a suite, for instance, with access to a concierge level. In addition, you’ll gain privileged access to private pools, restaurants, and services like a butler 24/7.

Ship-within-a-ship cruises will cost you a little more than another category room, of course. But that’s because of the added services you’re receiving with it.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line has The Haven, and Princess has its MedallionClass . One of our favorites is The Retreat with Celebrity Cruises , where guests get perks like eating at Luminae and have access to suite perks, including in-room workout gear if you sign up for an AquaSuite .

Private Islands

Some cruise lines have private islands that are cool to visit. Only the cruise line’s ships will visit them.

For example, Royal Caribbean’s Caribbean itineraries go to their island, CocoCay. Disney Cruise Line’s Caribbean sailings go to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.

These islands have been developed with cruiser vacationers in mind. So they’re complete with memorable excursion adventures, waterslides, rides (like zip lines), bars, restaurants, and more.

Family Friendliness

Some cruise lines are more friendly towards multi-generational groups.

Disney Cruise Line has repeatedly been voted the best cruise line for families, which is not a surprise to anyone! Other cruise lines aren’t necessarily known for their “youthful” activities. Rather than wave pools and rock climbing, they focus on fine dining and casinos.

More children and families will be on cruises when kids’ school breaks occur, regardless of the cruise line. This is expected during spring break, summer break, and winter break.

There are things to keep in mind to determine if a cruise is a right fit for your family, especially if you have young kids:

  • Onboard a ctivities , like laser tag, go-karts, ice skating, and more.
  • If there is childcare onboard , including what ages it covers. Onboard childcare means that you can check your kids into a “babysitter” service. They can be supervised and play with other children their age while you enjoy the cruise as adults only for a few hours. Some cruise lines require additional payment for this service.
  • Bathtubs : It may seem like a silly thing to consider, but if you have a young toddler who doesn’t bathe in a shower and you need a tub for bath time at night, you will want to check to see what the bathroom situation is in the cabins before you book. Some cruises have cabins with standing showers only, and others have tubs too.
  • Kids sail free : Sometimes, to entice you to book a particular cruise, a company will have promotions for “kids sail free,” as long as two paying adults are in the cabin.

Culinary Cruises

One of the cool things about cruise lines in the past few years is their focus on culinary experiences.

Various cruise lines, from big to small, focus on Epicurean experiences. If you're a gourmand and seek vacations entailing special food experiences, look for notable sailings featuring celebrity chefs or special menus .

For example, Emerald Cruises and Scenic have featured cruises with Bravo celebrity chefs onboard.

The Future Of Cruising is Bright, No Matter the Best Cruise for You

Cruises are a well-trodden holiday option, offering the opportunity to explore various parts of the world while enjoying the comfort of a hotel on the seas.

These trips are popular with both families and couples, but they can be just as rewarding and enjoyable for solo travellers, giving you as much flexibility as you want along with opportunities to meet like-minded holidaymakers and see some of the world’s finest tourist destinations .

Daily activities will keep you entertained while onboard, while organised excursions or solo trips let you see a magnificent range of towns and cities at your leisure. Solo-specific events mean that meeting other travellers is as easy as sitting down to dinner, while you’ll have a comfortable solo cabin to come back to at the end of each day. Choose the right cruise and you’ll get all of this while avoiding the common ‘singles surcharge’.

If you’ve got the itch to book, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best cruise liners for single passengers below.

Riviera Travel

Riviera Travel operates river cruises around the world, with destinations as far as Egypt and Vietnam . Nevertheless, the focus is on European river cruises , with plenty of packages to the Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Douro and Danube on offer. Packages include return flights, airport transfers and all meals onboard, with an extensive range of excursions and activities including guided tours and on-board folk music shows.

European river cruises are the only option that Riviera offers for solo travellers, with seven routes that cover the continent’s main rivers. Prices include all the same features as a standard booking – such as excursions, onboard meals and Wi-Fi – but with spacious single occupancy cabins and welcome dinners to help you meet people. Solo bookings also include the ‘superior’ drinks package, which gives guests an extensive selection of alcoholic drinks available both at lunch and between 6pm and midnight. The Rhine and Moselle package is their most affordable, starting in Cologne and taking you to beautiful towns like Koblenz and Rudesheim.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers adult-only cruises packed with a huge range of activities, from morning yoga classes to evening cabaret. There are plenty of solo cabins – their inaugural ship, Scarlet Lady, has 46 – and itineraries include solo meet-ups, activities and excursions with plenty of opportunities to meet other single travellers.

Packages include food, drink and activities as standard. With only four ships in the fleet, your choice of destination is slightly more limited, though you can still visit picturesque locations in Europe, the Caribbean , parts of Southern Asia and Australia. The Southeastern Caribbean Isles package will take you on a roundtrip from Puerto Rico, stopping in Guadeloupe, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian was the first cruise company to build ships with cabins and lounge areas that were specifically for solo travellers, and there are now around 1,000 solo cabins across its ships. Solo travellers can choose from Oceanview rooms, inside rooms, rooms with a balcony and even studios, and they will have access to the Solo Lounge – a private lounge only for guests travelling alone – where various events and happy hours are held.

Normal packages include food and onboard activities, though several bookings let you choose to add extras – from shore excursions to speciality meals or a free bar – for a small added fee. Norwegian sail across a wide range of destinations too, from the British Isles and the Mediterranean to Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean.

Tauck claims to have specialised in solo travel for over 90 years, and today this translates to special solo savings and no single supplement on European river cruises. Travellers looking to see the continent ‘solo style’ can benefit from savings of up to £750, and will enjoy more stylish, contemporary ships with fewer guests for an overall more luxurious experience. Trips cover Europe’s main waterways, and prices include all food, drink, activities and shore tours. Choose the Yuletide package between Brussels and Amsterdam for a festive experience at some of the best Christmas markets – and prettiest waterways – on the continent.

Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador is a new cruise line where trips begin in cities around the UK , including Liverpool , Belfast, Dundee and Bristol. Both Ambience and Ambition have 89 dedicated cabins set aside for solo travellers, available “at a special single supplement against the equivalent twin fare based on selected single cabin categories”. The operator journeys to a vast range of destinations considering there are only two ships in its fleet, with voyages going as far as Singapore , Brazil and New Zealand.

Ambassador’s cruises contain an extensive programme of activities for solo passengers, including a ‘Welcome Get Together’ and guided tours together with other solo travellers. Other onboard entertainment ranges from West End-style shows to comedy nights, with plenty of opportunities to meet others. If cruising during winter, visit Norway to see wondrous fjords and (possibly) the aurora borealis, with the Land of the Northern Lights package.

Oceania has made considerable investment in providing options for solo travellers, with its newest ship, Vista, containing six 270-square-foot solo cabins that include balconies, premium lounge access and a welcome bottle of champagne. It has fitted its older ships with 14 ‘Solo Staterooms’, all of which offer magnificent sea views.

Oceania voyages make it easy to meet like-minded travellers with solo meet-and-greet events, large mixed dining tables, mixed shore excursions and single-traveller activities such as art classes. Destinations range from the Mediterranean and Scandinavia to South Africa and the tropics, meaning solo travellers have opportunities to see a large portion of the world alone. Book the 14-day  Miami to Tenerife cruise  to experience Mediterranean charm and Caribbean beauty in late March.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean say that they do not “have specific pricing for single occupancy” cabins, but that they do offer single cabins on some of their ships, including Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. These cruises “can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee”, and they cover an extensive range of destinations, from Europe to the Caribbean and Singapore to Australia.

Passengers can reserve inside studio staterooms, virtual balcony staterooms and super studio ocean view stateroom with balconies, giving them between 101 and 199 square feet of space. Everything else will be the same as usual, meaning you can enjoy the same benefits as every other guests without paying a premium. If departing from the UK, the only tours available take you around Europe; the most extensive is the Mediterranean Cities package, covering Seville, Sardinia, Rome , Lisbon and more.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
