If you’re hoping to see whales, here are the best spots to visit.

Thar she blows! If you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these massive and majestic creatures, there’s nothing quite like it. Before you go on your first trip, you need to know that whale watching can be a hit or miss, since there’s no guarantee you will see them in the wild. We’ve been on a handful of whale-watching tours and sometimes it feels a bit like fishing because there’s a lot of waiting involved.

If you want to go whale watching, you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure your chances are optimal. We added some tips below to help you make the best of your experience.

5. Monterey Bay, California →

Depending on the time of year, you’ll find different types of whales in this area. April to December brings humpback and blue whales, while December to April brings the gray whales. You may even catch some killer whales in the area too.

6. San Diego, California →

You have plenty of choices to see the whales in San Diego. You can take a whale-watching tour like we did, or just head to the western overlook of Cabrillo National Monument. 7. Santa Barbara, California

Over 27 types of whales and dolphins come through this area at any given time. Gray whales can be seen from February to early April, and you can visit from May to September to see blue whales, minke, and humpback.

8. Jacksonville, Florida

The North Atlantic Right Whales are still fighting back from near extinction. If you’re lucky, you can spot these majestic animals in the winter months anywhere on the northeast coast of Florida between Jacksonville and Cape Canaveral.

9. Maui, Hawaii

Although over 20 species of whales have been spotted in the area, the stars are the humpback whales. Nearly 3,000 whales come to mate here, and it’s one of the few places you can hear them serenading potential mates.

10. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

11. Bar Harbor, Maine →

12. Long Island, New York

From July to early September, you get an incredibly diverse set of whales in this area. It’s a great feeding ground for the whales. They can’t resist!

13. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Humpback whales and occasionally fin whales can be spotted at Virginia Beach anytime between December and March. Once it gets warmer, you’ll be able to catch bottlenose dolphins playfully swimming by as well.

14. Depoe Bay, Oregon

Nearly 18,000 gray whales pass by the Oregon coast on their bi-yearly migration. You can visit the Oregon Parks and Recreation Whale Watching Center on Depoe Bay to get a great view or join one of the whale-watching tours in the area.

15. San Juan Islands, Washington

With their largest island named Orcas Island, you can only hope to spot an orca.

Local Tip: If you’re curious about the island’s history, it was named after Juan Vicente de Güemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo. Orcas is a shortened form of Horcasitas. But you do find orcas here as well!

• It’s also good to take an all-day tour versus one that’s a few hours so that you can travel farther out and have more opportunities to cross paths with them.
• From what we hear, chances of sightings are much higher in the early morning.
• Rainy weather isn’t bad. Sometimes it’s nice because it calms the ocean and you can see more.
• When the waves are high, it’s so hard to see any movement. Half the time I couldn’t tell if it was a wave or a fin.
• Bring a jacket. The temperature out on the water can get considerably colder. Here are our  favorite travel jackets .
• Boats are required by federal law to stay at least 100 yards away from humpback whales in Hawaii and Alaska waters, 200 yards from killer whales in Washington State inland waters, and 500 yards away from North Atlantic right whales anywhere in the U.S. waters. If you stop the boat, and the whale comes to you that’s fine, but you can’t pursue the whale any closer.
• This means you will want to bring your longest lens, preferably on a cropped body ( this is the lens we use ).
• If you’re bringing a lot of camera gear. You may want to bring your own dry bag. We’ve tried out a few, and so far  these are our favorite .
• Don’t forget to bring  this  and  this  if you get seasick like me.

From the coast of Massachusetts to the beautiful beaches of Maui, the U.S. is home to some prime whale-watching spots. Read on for a few of our favorite whale-watching destinations around the country — plus when to visit, where to stay, and more.

San Juan Islands, Washington

The San Juan Islands — about 90 miles from Seattle — are home to orcas (killer whales) year-round. Here, you can spot humpback whales, minke whales, and gray whales. For the best views on land, head to Lime Kiln Point State Park and San Juan Island National Historical Park . Alternatively, head out into the water: There are several whale-watching tour operators to choose from, including Maya’s , San Juan Island Outfitters , San Juan Excursions , or San Juan Safaris . 

Where to Stay : Friday Harbor House , located in the isle’s main town of the same name, offers cozy accommodations in a laid-back ambiance. Every one of the 24 rooms offers waterfront views and King-sized beds. Don’t miss the on-site restaurant and raw bar. 

Maui, Hawaii 

The best time to go whale-watching in Maui is from November through May. During this time, thousands of North Pacific Humpback Whales migrate down south for the winter. The whales are best spotted via boat tour, and, fortunately, there are a range of options to choose from. Traditional whale-watching tours are available via Pacwale Eco-Adventures , while more adrenaline-pumping options include snorkeling whale-watching excursions from Ultimate Whalewatch , along with kayaking whale-watching tours from Maui Kayak Adventures . 

Where to Stay: The luxurious Fairmont Kea Lani resort offers something for everyone in your group, from kayaking to walking tours. The 22-acre, 450-room property features a wellness-centric spa, island-inspired food and drink offerings, and several swimming pools.

This is the Best Time of Year to Visit Hawaii

Provincetown, Massachusetts

Located on Cape Cod, this quaint, vibrant town — nicknamed P’town by locals and travelers — is best known for its welcoming atmosphere. It’s also a top whale-watching destination from mid-April through October. Here, you can expect to spot dolphins plus a variety of whale species, including finbacks, humpbacks, orcas. While you may be able to spot whales from land ( Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach are both popular spots for whale-watching), your best bet would be to book a guided boat. Where to Stay: At The White Porch Inn , guests can relax in one of ten nautical-inspired guest rooms — each with private balconies and soaking tubs — (some also have en-suite fireplaces!) before browsing the on-site art gallery. Monterey, california.

Monterey is an idyllic coastal California town that’s best known for its expansive aquarium — followed by exceptional whale-watching opportunities. While whale-watching is popular almost any time of year since the feeding season and the migrating season overlap, March through November is considered peak season. Princess Monterey Whale Watching , Monterey Bay Whale Watch , Discovery Whale Watch , Chris’ Whale Watching are all great options for sightseeing tours. You may also be able to spot whales from the shore in Monterey, but you may have better luck in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve (which also has an on-site whaling museum). 

Where to Stay : With its central downtown location, Hotel Pacific puts you within walking distance of many Monterey must-see sights. The all-suite boutique property boasts upscale accommodations — each with luxe touches like hardwood flooring, gas fireplaces, and private balconies.

Bar harbor, maine.

Whale-watching season in Bar Harbor — a cozy yet vibrant waterfront town in Maine — begins in mid-April and stretches all the way into October. You can expect to spot (mostly) humpback whales and perhaps a few minke, finback, and North American right whales during this time. The popular summer locale offers some of the best sightseeing opportunities to spot the creatures in action. For the best views, hop aboard a sightseeing cruise led by Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co.  Alternatively, bring a pair of binoculars to try your hand at whale-watching from shore at one of the area’s many beaches. 

Where to Stay : The waterfront Bar Harbor Inn & Spa dates back to 1887. Today, on-site activities and amenities abound: There’s a spa, swimming pool, cooking demos, history tours, waterfront yoga, and, of course, plenty of children’s programming. Accommodations are spacious and spread across three buildings. You’ll also find several dining venues here, too. 

Cape May, New Jersey

Whale watching may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Jersey Shore, but the truth is, Cape May offers (almost) year-round whale and dolphin sightings. While excursions typically run from March through December, the “peak season” for prime viewing is June through November. Humpback whales are the most commonly spotted. No visit is complete without a narrated tour aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher . The Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center also offers informative, guided tours. 

Where to Stay: With its grand Victorian-era, bright yellow-hued exterior,  it’s hard to miss Congress Hall . The property is located in downtown Cape May right along the beach. Rooms here are whimsical, with vibrant colors, playful patterns, and sun-drenched surroundings. The four on-site dining options are sure to please foodies, while the spa offers beach-inspired body treatments, services, and massages (think algae masks, sand scrubs, and more).

Newport, Rhode Island

The Ocean State is chock-full of whale-watching opportunities from June through October — so grab your cameras and hop aboard a boat via Classic Cruises of Newport . You can even book a private charter and have the entire vessel to yourself. And, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot finbacks, humpbacks, or right whales. 

Where to Stay: The design-forward Wayfinder Hotel is best known for its eclectic eats (plus indulgent cocktails!). The property boasts an overall laid-back vibe with funky rooms complete with custom furniture, vintage accents, and a coastal-inspire color palette.

Jacksonville, florida.

Florida may not be known for its abundance of whale-sightings, but hundreds of endangered right whales migrate here during the winter months. You may be able to spot from a distance via the Jacksonville Fishing Pier . Otherwise, your best bet would be to head out onto the water with River City Charters or Jax Boat Rentals . 

Where to Stay: The centrally located Sheraton Jacksonville Hotel makes an excellent (budget-friendly!) home base for exploring. Rooms and suites are standard with comfy beds, basic furnishings (i.e., seating, desks), and marble-tiled bathrooms.

Montauk, new york.

Sperm whales are often spotted along Montauk’s shallow waters — along with humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins, and other majestic wildlife creatures. Summertime is usually prime time for whale-watching in Montauk (think July through September). Viking Fleet offers marine biologist-led boat tours. 

Where to Stay: With 96 rooms, Marram offers a central Mountauk location right on the ocean. Rooms are sun-drenched and feature warm colors inspired by the surrounding beach. Activities include biking, beachfront yoga, nature walks, meditation, and evening bonfires. No stay is complete without a meal at the on-site Mostrador restaurant.

Depoe bay, oregon.

The Oregon coast is teeming with thousands of gray whales from mid-December to mid-January and late February and May. Depoe Bay is the best place to spot ‘em all. Visit the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center , which has friendly, helpful staff and a heated indoor viewing area. Or, if you’re brave enough to battle the weather, head out onto the water: Dockside Charters , Tradewinds Charters , and Whale Research Eco Excursions all offer whale-watching cruises.

Where to Stay: SCP Depoe Bay is an eco-friendly surf lodge. The low-key, laid-back, and minimalist-inspired property seeks inspiration from its coastal surroundings. Rooms here are done in soft whites, grays, and blues with reclaimed wood furnishings adorned with fishing artwork.

While international travel remains off the table, a domestic whale watching trip is no less rewarding (and for Americans who live on a coast, great viewing spots are never far). As the seasons change, temperatures flux in tandem, and countless cetaceans embark on lengthy migrations across the globe, there’s always something new and exciting to watch for in the world of whales.

Santa Barbara, California

With sandy beaches framed by the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is already a must-visit destination just 90 minutes northwest of Los Angeles . Though it's home to an assortment of sea lions, dolphins and birds, San Diego 's most popular animals are whales. It's hardly surprising, then, that the city boasts unrivaled opportunities for observing these gentle giants. After consulting both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News identified the following five tours as the best available for whale watching. These outings feature professional crews that offer insights about the fauna encountered during these watery expeditions.

Adventure R.I.B. Rides – Whale Watching San Diego

This ride on a military-style rigid inflatable boat (RIB) features sightings of whales (and dolphins), plus views of the city's skyline, a submarine base and Point Loma Lighthouse. The excursions occur year-round, though the roster of whale species changes with the seasons. Humpback and fin whales as well as common and bottlenose dolphins are in the area all year. Meanwhile, blue and minke whales appear from May through December, and gray whales tend to show up from December through April. Trip-takers find the captains to be friendly and adept guides. Tours typically last 2 ½ to three hours and take place three times daily, with departures at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets start at $98 per person. Groups are limited to 10 people, all of whom must be at least 4 years old. Private tours are also available.

Flagship Cruises & Events – Whale Watching Tour

This tour aims to be equal parts educational and fun, and reviewers consistently report that it succeeds in both respects, with the crew winning praise for being knowledgeable and personable. Flagship Cruises & Events offers this three-hour tour from mid-December to mid-April – peak season for observing gray, fin and humpback whales as they migrate along the coast – with departures at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. daily. Tickets start at $45 for adults on weekdays and $50 on weekends, with half-priced tickets for children 4 to 12. (Accompanied children younger than 4 can ride for free.) If you don't see whales on your tour, Flagship guarantees you free passage on a subsequent outing. In addition to its whale-focused tour, the company offers a variety of other cruises, including a ferry ride to Coronado .

Next Level Sailing – Whale Watching

The Yacht America, a 139-foot yacht used for this excursion, sails daily throughout the year, offering chances to see humpback, blue and gray whales, among others, depending on the season. Patrons consistently describe the captain and crew as capable, attentive and engaging. (The vessel itself is generally regarded as particularly attractive.) Tour-takers can opt for a morning or afternoon departure and expect the outing to last 3 ½ to four hours. Tickets start at $85 for adults and $42.50 for children (prices are slightly higher on weekends); fees include water and snacks. You're also welcome to bring your own food on board. Next Level offers several charter options as well.

San Diego Whale Watch - Whale Watching

This 2 ½-hour tour features a certified marine biologist as a guide, ensuring that sea life enthusiasts will get the maximum amount of insight about the whales, dolphins and other creatures they'll see. Patrons tend to appreciate the friendly crew members' informed commentary. Tours occur all year long, with both 9 a.m. and noon departure times available. Tickets cost approximately $48 per adult, with discounts for military service members, senior citizens and anyone younger than 18. As an added bonus, if tourgoers do not spot any whales, they can take their next ride for no charge. San Diego Whale Watch also offers a sunset cruise and private charters.

Sail San Diego - Whale Watching Sail

If you seek a small-group tour with personalized attention well suited for couples or families, Sail San Diego might have just the outing for you. Whale watching sails have just six people per outing and travel into the bay or open water. Reviewers frequently describe the captains – who also serve as guides – as hospitable, helpful, entertaining and accommodating. The 3 ½-hour cruises happen twice daily at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets start at $89 per person; fees include parking at the marina, light snacks and beverages. Sail San Diego also operates a sunset sail and private tours.

The winter is one of the best times to visit Oahu. That’s because you’ll be able to witness the amazing humpback whale migration! During this time, more than 10,000 whales make the long journey down to the islands from Alaska to breed and raise their young (the waters are much warmer around Hawaii than they are up north!). 

If you’re heading to Oahu and want to witness this incredible spectacle for yourself, there are many whale watching tours where you can get up close to these beautiful creatures. There are private yacht charters, group speed boat tours, and everything else in between, which can make choosing the right tour difficult. 

But we’ve done the dirty work and picked out the best whale watching tours on Oahu. As one of our favorite Hawaiian activities, you can’t go wrong with any of the excursions on this list!

Oahu Whale Watching FAQs

When is the oahu whale watching season.

Most whales start arriving in Hawaii around December (but there have been some years where they show up as early as September). The season usually wraps up around March, which is when the majority of pods head back up north. However, we have also spotted them around the islands in May, so the season, in general, is quite flexible! But always during Hawaii’s winter.

What time of day is best for whale watching on Oahu?

During peak season, it’s possible to see whales any time of the day, as they are always active. Therefore, it doesn’t really matter if you choose a morning, afternoon, or even a sunset tour to see them.

But in general, you’ll find that most companies operate tours in the morning. This is a good time to go, as the temperatures are a tad cooler, and you won’t be directly in the sun the whole time. Morning is also before the trade winds pick up, so the boat ride will be smoother and more enjoyable (especially if you’re prone to seasickness). 

What month is best for whale watching on Oahu?

As we mentioned, peak whale season changes year by year, so it’s hard to say exactly what month has the best whale watching opportunities. If you’re planning your vacation around this, you can consult the official Sanctuary Whale Watching Count . The count is conducted during the peak season to keep track of how many whales are spotted off the Hawaiian Islands.

In 2023, the highest number of whales was recorded in March. But in 2022, the best month for sightings was in January. 

But even if you don’t go during the month with the highest numbers, you might still be lucky enough to see several on your tour! Because, as we said, they can be spotted earlier or later than peak seasons. Take a deep dive on the best time for whale watching in Hawaii.

What is the best place to see whales on Oahu?

Whales live in the water, so the best place to see them is by taking a boat tour. If you prefer to stay on land, then don’t worry. There are still a few places around Oahu where you can see them from shore.

One of the best spots on the island is up at the North Shore . Shark’s Cove , Turtle Bay, and La’ie Point are all great places to see the majestic creatures playing in the water.

If you’re down south, then you also have tons of seaside locations for viewings. Makapu’u Lighthouse is one of our favorites (it’s also a nice hike with a beautiful lookout over the ocean). You can also try Halona Blowhole, Spitting Caves, and Lana’i Lookout – all of which are just a short drive from one another along the southeastern coast.

How much is a whale watching tour on Oahu?

The price of a whale watching tour on Oahu depends on multiple factors, including the number of people in your party, the length of your tour, and the type of vessel you’re traveling in. With this in mind, the average cost for one person is around $100 – $150. However, we’ve seen some Oahu tour companies offer shorter whale watching tours for about $60 a person, which is a great deal if you’re on a budget!

Another option is to hire a private charter. While this is more expensive than a shared whale watching tour, it can make more financial sense if you’re traveling with a large group or with lots of family members. While the cost of a private charter also varies from company to company, we’ve seen them as low as $400 for 1 to 4 people and upwards of $2,500 for larger boats and groups. 

Is a whale watching tour worth it on Oahu?

Oahu is a really fun island to visit (especially if it’s your first time in Hawaii). But the truth is, it’s not the best island for whale watching. It doesn’t get as many whales as Maui , which has the highest recorded number of whales out of all the Hawaiian Islands.

There’s a better chance of seeing whales on a boat tour than if you were to just watch them from shore. But keep in mind that you might not see any at all. This can be a big disappointment if you have your heart set on seeing whales. But if you go with lower expectations, the leisurely boat ride can be a wonderful experience on its own.

The 8 Best Whale Watching Tours on Oahu

If you’re browsing different whale watching tours on Oahu, you’ll quickly see that there are many options to choose from. Depending on your budget and interest, you can book a shared tour with other people or charter a private boat for a more exclusive experience. To help you make a decision, we’ve rounded up 7 of the best tours that we can recommend to visitors.

We also wanted to make you’re aware that boats aren’t allowed to drive directly into the area where the whales are. State and federal law require them to keep at least 100 yards back. For this reason, most tours will go close to the pods but turn off their engines. This isn’t a big deal, as you’ll be able to see those giants from that distance anyway! Plus wild animals know no bounds so curious whales may approach the boat, giving you an exhilarating close encounter.

And You Creations

The early morning whale-watching tour hosted by And You Creations is an affordable option if you’re staying in or around Waikiki. Departing from Kewalo Boat Harbor (roughly 2.5 miles from downtown Waikiki), this 2.5-hour cruise is on a powerful double-decker boat for sightseeing. As you travel past Waikiki Beach towards Diamond Head, you’ll get to enjoy stunning coastal views while you search for swimming and breaching whales.

We like this tour because it also includes a Hawaiian plumeria flower ceremony and whale-watching chant. The crew also performs authentic hula and dance songs to keep everyone onboard occupied in between sightings, which is great if you’re traveling with kids. 

When whales are nearby, the nature specialist will drop the hydrophone into the ocean so you can hear them singing their songs! They’re also there to help answer any questions you have about the whales (or other visible marine life creatures, for that matter).

Dolphin Excursions

Ditch the crowds and enjoy this 15-person (max!) tour as you look for whales around Waikiki. We particularly love this tour by Dolphin Excursions because you also have the opportunity to get off the boat to snorkel! Snorkel gear and life vests are provided for those who want to swim with tropical fish, green sea turtles, and possibly dolphins. Back on board, the marine naturalist will share insight into all the creatures you see during your tour. 

This is an afternoon excursion that leaves around 2:30 PM and lasts for 3 hours. Boats leave from Waianae Boat Harbor, which is around a 25-minute drive from Ko Olina Resorts . If you prefer a more intimate experience, private charters can also be booked just for your group.

And most importantly, Dolphin Excursions guarantees whale sightings while you’re out. If you don’t see any during your outing, they’ll give you a return trip voucher for a future journey completely free of charge!

Bob Marlin Charters Oahu

A private whale-watching charter is an incredible experience. With Bob Marlin Charters Oahu , you can have the open waters practically to yourself as you cruise around the island on your 32ʻ Luhrs Express. It’s an awesome opportunity to see whales and surprisingly more affordable than you might think – we’re talking starting at $400 for groups up to 4 people!

Because this is a private charter, you get to choose the start time that works best for your group out of 5-time slots. Leave first thing at 7 AM, enjoy a leisurely lunch sail, or admire the colorful sunset from a 4 PM journey. All trips last two hours, so keep that in mind when booking.

This trip leaves from Haleiwa Harbor, so it’s best if you’re staying somewhere on the North Shore . But if your tour starts later, you can still make your way up from Waikiki. It’s worth the drive, considering that the North Shore has more whale sightings than any other part of the island!

Honolulu Snorkel Company

Hop aboard Honolulu Snorkel Company’s 40-foot catamaran for a memorable sail across the Oahu coastline. This 1.5-hour tour is ideal if you’re short on time and want to make the most of it on Oahu. Although you’re not on the water for as long as some other whale watching tours, you’ll still get to see humpbacks, as well as other marine life like turtles, flying fish, and dolphins!

Tickets are more affordable than other excursions, which means you can still go whale watching even if you’re on a tight budget! And young kids are more than welcome as long as they are over 5 years old.

Tours leave twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3 PM and depart from the Kewalo Boat Harbor outside of Waikiki.

Deep Blue Eco Tours

The whale watching tours with Deep Blue Eco Tours is another fantastic option for those staying on the North Shore. Departing from Haleiwa Boat Harbor, they offer shared and private tours for pretty reasonable prices.

If you’re joining a shared tour, you’ll only be on the boat with a maximum of 5 other guests. Having such a small group is a great way to see and photograph the whales up close and personal. But if you’d rather enjoy a VIP experience, you can also charter a boat for your group (also a maximum of 6 people total).

All tours last for two hours. Depending on the date, you can choose from one of five different start times: 8 AM, 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, or 4 PM. 

The Adventure Boat (Private Charter)

Take a wild ride on the Adventure Boat and across the entire southern coast of Oahu! On this high-speed inflatable Zodiac boat, you’ll be able to see more and cover more miles as you zip through the Pacific Ocean looking for whales.

This is a private charter company, so it will just be you and your group out on the open waters. This is a great opportunity to get a knowledgeable guide all to yourself – and the whales, of course! You can choose to book for up to 6, 9, or 12 people (prices vary depending on how many people are on board). 

Light refreshments are served during the trip, although you’re more than welcome to bring any food or snacks if you crave something more. The Adventure Boat operates tours from December to April and at three times during the day. You can book your tour at 8 AM, 11 AM, or 2 PM.

Honolulu Sailing Company (Private Charter)

For a truly memorable experience, look no further than a trip with the Honolulu Sailing Company . Instead of a crammed boat with other tourists, you’ll be relaxing in style as you glide across the ocean on a private yacht! 

As these are completely private charters, you’ll be allowed to book the vessel of your choice. Set sail on the Beneteau 42 Gauguin, the Beneteau 48 Gauguin, or the extra luxurious Beneteau Sense 50′ Tefiti (each yacht can accommodate parties of up to 6). They also have shaded deck lounges, so there’s plenty of room for everyone to sprawl out and find a front-row seat to the action.

Cruises last for three hours and can be booked starting at 8 AM, 11 AM or 2 PM. Make sure to bring your own snacks and drinks, as it makes the entire journey that much more enjoyable!

Hawaii Ocean Charters (Private Charter)

Set out on a 30′ catamaran with up to 6 guests. You’ll have a ton of space to spread out and enjoy unobstructed views as whales breach and play.

The luxury catamaran is a comfortable and smooth ride, making it a great choice if you suffer from motion sickness. Shaded cabin seating and on board bathrooms are available throughout your trip. A knowledgeable and experienced crew will give you the best chance of finding whales on your adventure! You also get the chance to snorkel at an offshore reef commonly home to sea turtles and tropical fish. 

Tours are 2-4 hours (your choice) departing at 9:30 am, 11:45 am, and 2:00 pm daily. You have the option to bring your own snacks and BYOB or you can have your charter catered.

Whale Watching on Oahu Tips

As you prepare for your whale watching tour, there are a couple of things to keep in mind to enhance your magical marine experience. 

• Book a tour with a sighting guarantee .  Because whales are wild animals, it’s hard to predict exactly where they’ll be around the island. For this reason, it’s possible you might not get to see them on your tour. However, some companies will put you on another boat if you don’t see them on the trip. While there aren’t many companies on Oahu that offer this, it can make a huge difference if you’re arriving early or later in the whale watching season.
• Do your first tour earlier during your vacation. If you do book with a company that guarantees whale sightings, then you’ll need a few extra days to rebook if you need a second outing. Therefore, you shouldn’t wait until the end of your trip to book your tour, or else you won’t be able to take advantage of this offer. 
• Go on a morning tour. While this depends on your personal preference, we think morning tours are the best time to be out on the water. Not only are the waters calmer (the tradewinds usually pick up in the afternoon), but fewer boats and crowds are looking for whales. It’s also much cooler in the morning, which is great if you don’t want to be baking in the sun for hours at a time!
• Choose the right boat. As you can see from the different types of tours above, many different types of vessels go out to see whales. Knowing which boat you want can significantly impact the type of trip you have. For example, smaller power rafts are fun and fast, but they’re not suitable for young kids, pregnant women, or people with injuries. In these situations, larger vessels or sailboats are usually the better choice!

Puget Sound Express (PGS) is the only half-day whale-watching tour operating from Seattle. They have two vessels, Saratoga and Swiftsure, which they claim are the quietest and fastest whale-watching boats in the Northwest and Salish Sea. Both vessels are sound-proofed, hydrofoil jet boats sans propellers.

PGS is a family business that’s been going for three generations, and their experience makes it possible for them to guarantee you’ll see whales and orcas in what is called “the American Serengeti.” Additionally, PSG is a proud member of PWWA and promises a free trip in the unlikely event the tour does not encounter any whales.

FRS Clipper is a large catamaran, or “fast ferry,” operating from Seattle and Victoria. It is the only tour that departs directly from Seattle’s waters, making it a convenient option for visitors seeking a day tour or overnight packages. While FRS Clipper doesn’t offer whale-watching tours, per se, your chances of spotting these large mammals on a summer trip are good.

Whale & Wildlife Watching Tours

The San Juan Islands are in the heart of the Salish Sea – home to five different types of whales, making the archipelago one of the best places in the world to see whales in the wild. Well-known for orcas, there are two ecotypes – the fish-eating Southern Resident pods and mammal-eating Bigg’s killer whales. The Bigg's are the most common orcas found on tours. Other whales include humpbacks, minkes, and grays. 

Though it’s possible to see whales here year-round, the best months are April through October, especially for orcas. Humpbacks, the largest of the Salish Sea’s whales at around 50 feet long, are most commonly seen in August through October as they work their way south from Alaska towards more tropical climes. 

Whale sightings are never guaranteed, but the greatest potential for spotting them is with a professional whale and wildlife tour. All the companies in the San Juans are owned and staffed by locals. An added benefit to a tour is that onboard naturalists provide identification, education, and stewardship suggestions for passengers. Each company also contributes to orca and salmon recovery efforts in the Islands and the greater Salish Sea ecosystem. The crew was fantastic and went out of their way to find whales. I highly recommend this excursion.

We enjoyed getting to see what came up with the traps and getting to hold a live lobster. It was a good length of a tour and I'd definitely recommend it for the kids or adults like me who are still kids at heart. The ship captain and naturalist were very friendly and great guides.

We booked a whale watching tour through this company. It was a great experience we saw several whales and porpoise and dolphins while on the tour. The crew and staff were great and they really took time to make our tour extra special. We highly recommend this company to all who want to experience an once in a lifetime experience.

During our adventure we saw seals, the infamous puffins, bald eagles along with many other critters as well. The crew were accommodating, professional, a little humorous, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend if you're up for a boat ride in the Bar Harbor area.

So fun! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, the boat had plenty of room to walk around and the captain did a great job making sure we could all see the landmarks they were pointing out. I’d go again!

Interesting history of Bar Harbor area coupled with eagles, hawks, cormorants, gannets and other sea birds. Good narration by our naturalist, Ruth, who was informative and interesting. Enjoyed the lighthouses and seeing the diverse harbors and island shores.

We loved both Captain Edwin and narrator Andy. Both were so gracious, clearly caring about everyone's comfort and involvement. The knowledge that both shared regarding the local seas, lobsters, crabs, seals, and landmarks was very interesting and informative. We caught a variety of sea life in the traps - lobster, crabs, and a sea cucumber. We spotted dozens of seals. The boat itself was stable, clean, and well maintained. It had flaps to protect from high winds and sea spray, but you are allowed to open the flaps as you want. I am someone who can get seasick easily, but I did not feel even the bit queasy. They do post a sign at the dock on the day of your tour that states the sea sickness level, so if it indicates a high level of sea sickness, you can take Dramamine or other in advance. Kids and adults alike enjoyed this tour and it was very interactive.

The boat is roomy, both inside ans out on the decks; staff friendly and knowledgeable. The sound system is nice and clear so all guests can hear what the naturalist is saying about the wildlife. And...oh...the whales!!! It was amazing, and I hope to do it again. Well worth the price.

On this once in a lifetime experience, we chose to go with this whale 🐋 watching 👀 tour There are many companies that offer varying tours, and this is the only one I've ever experienced, so can only speak about this one; nor do I have anything to compare it to. This experience was 100% as expected (and advertised) with zero surprises. The Captain, crew, ancillary staff,safety/security personnel and tour guide were all highly trained, knowledgeable, courteous, professional, & welcoming. It was just a fantastic overall 'refreshing' vibe. The scenery was nothing short of amazing, awe-inspiring, and magical. We saw EIGHT humpback whales!!! I am a seasoned world traveler, have visited numerous bucket list places, and have done literally hundreds of excursions through Trip Advisor and similar platforms. I 100%, would do this again if the opportunity presented itself. For others? I highly, highly recommend this experience. 👌

We went on the lighthouse tour and it was wonderful! The guide did a fabulous job informing us about lighthouses, history of the area and alerting us to wildlife. Highly recommend this tour!

The captain and crew went off their route to find interesting sights and sea life for our cruise. The Naturalist on board was knowledgeable and interesting. Highly recommend it!

We had a great experience with the Nature Cruise, we learned a lot about the area and saw some great scenic views! I highly recommend binoculars, you can rent some on the boat, but they’re limited. We got to see seals, porpoises, and a few bald eagles, which was really cool because I had never seen one before and they were what I wanted to see most! I definitely plan on going back again for more cruises!

Current Season and Sightings

Summer / Fall Season (Mid-March through early December)

During the summer/fall season we are focusing on feeding whales that come to the bay to feast on small fish and krill. We expect to see humpback whales daily but we can also view blue whales, fin whales, gray whales (finishing migration), killer whales and a variety of other dolphin species. The summer / fall season can be very windy in the afternoon! The wind pattern we get from spring to mid-summer is great for the ocean, but can make it difficult for a boat ride. Please consider this when you choosing between your options.

We offer a morning tour (recommended) at 9am which is 3.5-4 hours in duration. We also offer an afternoon tour at 1:30pm which is 2.5-3 hours in duration. Whale sightings are consistent all day, but the morning sea conditions are usually more favorable. We like to take extra time searching a variety of areas around Monterey Bay in the morning, while the seas are calmer so that we can make our best route plan for the afternoon when the seas can be more choppy.

We typically run a 5pm Sunset whale watch tour in the summer months as well. For the 2021 season, we have also been running these for spring break. Enjoy the wildlife and then relax as you take in the beautiful sunset over the Monterey Bay!

The bay is always teeming with life! There are still opportunities to see several different species of dolphin, Humpback whales, Blue whales, and even Killer Whales on occasion!

Winter Season (December-Mid March)

During the winter season we are focusing on migrating whales. The one of largest movement of mammals on earth happens just off the coast of Pacific Grove, CA – the south end of Monterey Bay. Gray whales pass by the coast, about a 30 min ride from Monterey Harbor. Due to the short distance from the “gray whale super highway” our trips can be shorter in duration for the winter time. We depart at 10am and 1:30pm daily during this time of year.

Boston’s treasured lighthouses are being highlighted on harbor cruises while an endangered species is given space to feed in the waters off Massachusetts.

“Everyone loves a lighthouse!” said David Coffin, the narrator of the Boston Harbor City Cruise lighthouse tour. “How can you not like a lighthouse?”

The two-hour tour is a limited-edition cruise meant to highlight the historic structures and Boston history. Visitors onboard can opt for indoor or outdoor seating, where they get a view of the U.S.S. Constitution, the Boston Light, Graves Light and other notable points in these waters.

And during the journey, Coffin, a noted sea chantey singer, who’s made a name for himself on TikTok, will treat visitors to a rendition of a locally inspired chantey.

In addition to relying on interest in lighthouses, the tour also replaces a traditional whale-watching excursion.

“We used to start whale watches at the end of March,” said Coffin. “But now, as of last year at least, there’s a speed restriction out on Stellwagen Bank where the whales feed, and our boats will take you. So a whale watch today with a speed restriction would be about eight hours.”

That speed restriction on these waters is meant to protect one of the most endangered animals on the planet - the North Atlantic right whale.

“We’ve created this problem, we’ve caused this population to decrease significantly,” said Dr. Sarah Sharp, an animal rescue veterinarian with the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “But the good side of that is that it’s also in our hands to help save this population and really be a part of that solution for these animals.”
