Best Winery Tour (2023) July 21, 2023

There's nothing like getting a behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process (while tasting along the way) to hone both your appreciation and your palate. To find the best experiences, we asked a panel of wine industry experts to nominate their preferred winery tours throughout the country, then readers voted for their favorites.

Here are the 10 best winery tours in the United States.

The Donum Estate

No. 10: The Donum Estate - Sonoma, California

A visually stunning property in Sonoma, the Donum Estate is part wine space, part experiential gallery featuring The Donum Collection, one of the world's largest accessible private sculpture collections. "The art tour plus wine tasting experience is really special and fun," says expert Amber Gibson. "They'll even take you on tour around the property on an ATV!"

Archery Summit

No. 9: Archery Summit - Dayton, Oregon

Founded in 1993, this winery uses grapes grown in its six vineyards on 120 acres in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. You can sample their wines on their guided tours given daily of the vineyards, production facilities and  wine cave that's 42 feet below ground.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery

No. 8: Gundlach Bundschu Winery - Sonoma, California

Just five minutes from Sonoma Plaza, historic Gundlach Bundschu Winery at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains invites guests to tour the 320-acre property aboard a Pinzgauer – a Swiss Army vehicle capable of going off road. Visitors can also tour the vineyards and barrel caves on foot.

Pine Ridge Vineyards

No. 7: Pine Ridge Vineyards - Napa, California

Pine Ridge Vineyards in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley offers an immersive tour and tasting experience within its European-inspired cave system. Several options, including the opportunity to book a private tour, are available.

Neal Family Vineyards

No. 6: Neal Family Vineyards - Angwin, California

Neal Family Vineyards, a third-generation family-owned estate, provides a private visit that includes a tour of the winery's caves and vineyard on stunning Howell Mountain. Guests take in an opportunity to learn about the estate's certified farming practices and taste four estate-grown wines. The lucky ones get to meet the winery dogs, too.

Cline Family Cellars

No. 5: Cline Family Cellars - Sonoma, California

Visitors to Cline Family Cellars on Saturdays and Sundays can enjoy a guided tour of the grounds and winery, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the sustainable winemaking process. The 30-minute tour includes a glass of wine to enjoy as you stroll the grounds.

Merriam Vineyards

No. 4: Merriam Vineyards - Healdsburg, California

There are high remarks for organically farmed, estate-centered Merriam Vineyards in Sonoma's Russian River Valley. Expert Ziggy Eschliman puts it this way: "I can’t say enough good things about this winery. There are lots of new options for touring and areas to hike too." A seated tasting with a selection of single-vineyard wines is offered daily.

Benziger Family Winery

No. 3: Benziger Family Winery - Glen Ellen, California

Visitors to Benziger Family Winery have five tour and tasting options to choose from. The exclusive Tribute Estate Tour takes visitors behind the scenes for a close-up look at the biodynamic vineyards and winemaking facilities. Visitors can also take a tractor tram tour of the vineyards to learn more about biodynamic farming.

Eberle Winery

No. 2: Eberle Winery - Paso Robles, California

Eberle is an essential part of Paso Robles wine history, says 10Best contributor Jill Barth. A tour of caves on the property has earned high recommendations from visitors. Offered along with seated tastings, this look at the 16,000-plus square feet of underground caves is a unique way to experience one of the pioneering producers of the region.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

No. 1: Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery - Hammondsport, New York

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, located in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York, offers an 1886 Food and Wine Experience in which guests partake in a guided viticultural or cellar tour followed by a seated wine tasting.  This experience is available from May through October and is reservation only.  For a less in-depth endeavor, seated wine tastings are offered year-round.

Rows of vines lead toward a sun-splashed mountain in the distance

10 best wine vacations in the U.S. for unforgettable tasting experiences

Looking for a place to unwind with a glass of wine? These U.S. wine regions are the places to seek out.

Erika Mailman

Napa’s an instantly recognizable name for wine travel, with its beautiful wine trail and Mediterranean climate, but there are so many other regions that lend themselves to a delicious wine vacation. Maybe you’re a hardcore wine chaser with a perceptive palate or just someone who enjoys visiting a new place with a glass in hand: either way, you’ll find your happy place with these regions and cities that focus on wine. Although so many of these are set on the west coast, all across the country there are so many pockets of winemaking to explore. Here’s our top 10, but you know we’re just getting started.

RECOMMENDED: Secret U.S. wine regions you need to know about

An email you’ll actually love

U.S. wine regions worth visiting

Willamette Valley | Oregon

1.  Willamette Valley | Oregon

Some say this valley has been producing some of the best pinot noir on Earth over the last half-decade. It boasts 700 different wineries across 150 miles, and alongside its notable pinot varietals it offers heritage and natural wines. Willamette Valley is its own American Viticulture Area with 11 sub-AVAs. There are many ways to enjoy tasting here, including guided and personal tours, wine dinners, and the chance to drift over the vine rows in a helicopter or hot air balloon. Alaska Airlines lets you fly a case of wine home for free from certain cities. Our favorite thing here? The world’s first Queer Wine Fest , now an annual event.

Sonoma County | California

2.  Sonoma County | California

It’s not always easy living in the shadow of a big sister like Napa, but Sonoma County arguably offers a better pace, less crowded tasting rooms and a beautiful historic downtown in the city of Sonoma itself. Visit more than 425 wineries across 60,000 acres of vines (plus dine at Michelin-starred and Zagat-rated restaurants). This county includes 19 American Viticulture Areas ranging from the Russian River Valley to the Petaluma Gap (just designated in 2018), and from Moon Mountain to the Pacific shores at Fort Ross-Seaview. Download the app to start planning your itinerary.

Napa Valley | California

3.  Napa Valley | California

It’s got name recognition for a reason: this incredible valley is world-famous for its vineyards with incredible views, delicious cabernet sauvignons and wine trail with more than 400 wineries and 90 urban tasting rooms. There are several climates within the region that present terroir appropriate for a variety of grapes. Most of the county falls under the Napa Valley American Viticultural Area. Winemaking began here in the mid-1800s, suffered from the twin tragedies of a phylloxera outbreak and then Prohibition—things didn’t get back into full swing until the 1960s. But what a bounce back! In 1976, Napa wines beat out famous French wines and tourism has swelled since then, with a wine train , wine trail, wine castles and more.

Yakima Valley | Washington

4.  Yakima Valley | Washington

Just a few hours from Seattle, this valley offers more than 90 wineries over 70 miles, incorporating six American Viticulture Areas. Known for reds like merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah, Yakima Valley also has a craft beer trail in case the sig-oth isn’t into it (perish the thought, but it happens). Check out the Spring Barrel Tasting every April with tastes straight from the barrel or Catch the Crush in the fall with the chance to stomp grapes yourself just like Lucy.

Madera County | California

5.  Madera County | California

This is one of the oldest grape growing regions in the U.S., located near Yosemite National Park , and its American Viticulture Area is one of the oldest in California. It dates to the late 1800s when immigrants from Italy, Armenia and France began farming with expertise brought from abroad. Few of those wineries survived Prohibition but many sprang up afterwards. Known for dessert wines and ports, the Madera region has nine wineries on its wine trail. Notable is Papagni Wines, which began in 1920 when Demetrio Papagni emigrated to Fresno from Bari, Italy, with his son Angelo creating the state of the art winery in Madera in 1973.

Santa Barbara County | California

6.  Santa Barbara County | California

This diverse wine-growing region benefits from the east-west orientation of Santa Barbara’s mountain ranges; the resulting microclimates support more than 80 varietals. Seven American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) lie within the county. The best introduction is the Urban Wine Trail, with more than 20 wineries that are mostly within walking distance of each other. New ones are being added all the time, and Wine Enthusiast called this county the wine region of the year in 2021. Watch for the inaugural Natural Coast Wine Fest later this month, a natural wine fair featuring Central Coast wine producers. We also love the playful Bingo for Bottles fundraiser events.

Loudoun County | Virginia

7.  Loudoun County | Virginia

Just outside of Washington, D.C., this Virginia county offers nearly 50 wineries with a wine trail map. Loudoun’s known for Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Norton grape varietals. Enjoy barrel tastings, stomping on grapes, vinotherapy spa treatments (where wine pulp and pips are rubbed into your skin), and Vinyasa in the Vines yoga classes. Spanning the counties of Loudoun and Fauquier, the Middleburg AVA was established in 2012 with almost 24 winemakers across 200 square miles.

Wine Islands | British Columbia

8.  Wine Islands | British Columbia

The only thing better than a fantasy island has to be a wine island. This collective of wineries on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands off Canada’s southwest coast has emerged with a great name after plantings in the 1970s and ‘80s have matured: cabernet sauvignon and black muscat, along with around 100 other varieties. These grapes benefit from sea winds and volcanic soil, and now there are more than 30 wineries on the islands. Hot tip: take a five-day wine expedition cruise on a catamaran through the Salish Sea in the fall, with sea lions and surfacing whales as you toast with your onboard sommelier. This Maple Leaf Wines and Islands trip lets you hike, kayak and walk the vineyards with local winemakers.

Dahlonega | Georgia

9.  Dahlonega | Georgia

Here in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains is an enclave of eight wineries and 12 tasting rooms showcasing the spoils of 100 acres of European, French hybrid and American vines. Watch for the Dahlonega Wine Trail Weekend each August, but visit anytime for tours and tastings. Wander Dahlonega’s charming streets with their National Register status as a historic downtown district, where seven tasting rooms are in walking distance of Dahlonega Historic Square.

Finger Lakes Wine Country| New York

10.  Finger Lakes Wine Country| New York

This 3,000 square mile area incorporates five counties and three wine trails. More than 100 wineries, breweries and distilleries cluster around the beautiful, narrow finger-shaped glacial lakes in New York. This area specializes in aromatic whites like riesling and gewurztraminer, although cool-climate reds like cabernet franc and pinot noir are also doing well. The lakes’ maintenance of a steady temperature gives these grapes a longer growing season and combats the early frost danger. Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake are separate American Viticultural Areas within the larger Finger Lakes AVA.

United States wine tour: Visit leading wineries across the US

Mention a United States wine tour and conversation will usually turn to Napa Valley or the neighbouring Sonoma County, but wine is grown in every one of the country’s 50 states – with several region’s producing vintages that compare to California’s finest The Golden State does account for almost 90% of the USA’s entire wine production, while its multitude of wineries, award-winning vintages and welcoming atmosphere has made it the prominent destination for wine tours USA. However, there are also many lesser-known winegrowing regions in the country that deserve to be explored. At Wine Paths, our local expert can organize exclusive United States wine tours, including elaborate tastings, luxury accommodation, fine dining experiences and some unique activities.

Tours Suggestion in the USA

winery tours us

Here is an overview of 10 of the finest wine regions that can be visited in the US:

1. Napa County, California

Napa Valley remains the largest wine region in America and is home to more highly rated wineries than anywhere else in the country. Although the region contributes only 4% to California’s entire production, the vineyards here produce arguably the most revered (and expensive) wines in the USA – while wine tourism is exceptionally catered for with five-star hotels, gourmet restaurants and luxury spas.

2. Sonoma County, California

Neighbouring Sonoma County, which lies west of Napa Valley toward the Pacific Ocean, is often regarded as a more tranquil alternative with fewer crowds and more scenic views. Although several grape varieties are grown here, the region is renowned for California’s signature Cabernet Sauvignon.

3. Finger Lakes, New York

Known for its cliffs, gorges and stunning walking trails, there are few American wine regions more scenic than rural New York state. Finger Lakes’ 50 wineries can be explored as part of a United States wine tour using three trails – the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is the oldest in the US, established in 1983.

4. Walla Walla, Washington

There are around 100 wineries spread out across five areas in Walla Walla, most of which are small boutique estates producing the country’s best Bordeaux-style varietals. The beautiful region features vast sagebrush deserts carved by picturesque rivers, while the town is charming and moves at a relaxed pace.

5. Texas Hill Country, Texas

This Texas region is popular for wine tours USA, attracting more than five million visitors annually to its 46 distinct wineries between Austin and New Braunfels.  Covering almost 10 million acres, it is one of the largest wine regions in the states, with vineyards dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.

6. Willamette Valley, Orego n

Since it is settled on the same latitude as Bordeaux in France, Willamette Valley has become synonymous with the production of highly rated Pinot Noir. The rolling hills and hazelnut tree orchards are within touching distance of Portland, making day trips from the city an extremely popular pastime.

7. Charlottesville, Virginia

Regarded as the birthplace of American wine, Charlottesville is renowned for its old-style wines inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision of viticulture. The former US president planted the first grapes while in office and there are now around 300 wineries in the region.

9. Pasa Robles, California

This Californian region is becoming a popular destination for United States wine tours because of its close proximity (three-hour drive) to both San Francisco and Los Angeles. Visitors are attracted by the beauty of the Santa Lucia foothills and its excellent value wines compared to elsewhere in the state.

10. Snake River, Idah o

Snake River is one of the oldest AVAs (American Viticultral Area) in Idaho, and where 90% of the state’s vineyards are located across five million acres. The region boasts panoramic views of the nearby Owyhee Mountain Ranges and is an ideal place to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking and white-water rafting.

#VISITNAPAVALLEY

With hundreds of wineries and miles of the valley to explore, we want you to know there's no wrong way to enjoy Napa Valley

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual (for women — sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals, etc.; for men – golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressier shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes, etc.).

A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.

How do I taste wine?

First of all: Wine should be enjoyed , so don't overthink it – have fun and drink what you like.

If you want to taste like a professional:

  • LOOK at the color and clarity
  • SWIRL to release the aromas
  • SNIFF to prepare your palate
  • SIP and enjoy the complexities
  • Spit into a "dump bucket" if you don't want to get inebriated.

7 Amazing Fall Wine Tours Across the U.S. and Canada

Revisit an old favorite region or discover somewhere new on these self-led wine tours.

What better way to immerse yourself in fall's glorious array of colors than with a flight of wines before you? Between the U.S. and Canada, there's a slew of fantastic wineries — in new and exciting wine regions as well as in the reliable, world-famous stalwarts — to check out this fall.

Lake Chelan

The Pacific-Northwest in the fall is, in a word, idyllic. And it's deliciously idyllic when paired with a wine tour in the Chelan Lake region, an official American Viticulture Area (AVA) since 2009. Over 30 wineries means some planning is in order. For Rhone-inspired wines, begin your scenic wine journey at Cairdeas , where you can also enjoy cheese and charcuterie — unless you're inclined to pack a picnic to enjoy on the grounds. Tsillan Cellars estate-grown wines are sipped in surroundings reminiscent of Italy's Lake Como, which may make it hard to steal away to the next winery. But steal away you should because family-run Succession will make you a Washington wine lover for life. The winery comes especially alive on Sundays when live music pairs with a number of varietals, including Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Hill Country

In a play that perhaps not many saw coming, Texas Hill Country, that hard-to-define swath of land west of Austin and north of San Antonio, no longer just boasts some of the best barbecue in the state. Thanks to numerous destination-worthy wineries, such as Perdenales Cellars and Kalasi Cellars , the region has earned a spot on wine lovers' radar. There are, in fact, more than 50 wineries in and around Fredericksburg, the heart of Hill Country, and more than a dozen tour options. You can also opt to hop on the 290 Wine Shuttle for more impromptu exploring of the region. The shuttle stops at more wineries (17 in total) than you could possibly experience in a day, but half the fun is in the sheer breadth of options. The Texas Wine Collection is a solid choice, considering it's really three wineries in one, and Heath Sparkling Wine is so confident you'll reach bliss at first taste that they've named one of their flagship sparkling wines Euphoria.

Napa Valley

California's wine country delivers on too many fronts to list here, but top billing goes to its stellar wines, jaw-dropping backdrops, and intimate DIY tasting tours (though there are a number of tour operators in the area who can help plan tasting itineraries or take you where you want to go). If you think you've seen all there is to see in Napa (impossible!), begin your tour at Cliff Lede Vineyards , where the art and music-themed blocks (e.g., "Dark Side of the Moon"), are almost as appealing as the Rock Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Opting for the Backstage Tasting will have you sipping Napa's bold flavors in a room featuring rotating art exhibits. Don't linger too long though because Bouchaine Vineyards is waiting to lure you in with its newly designed tasting room atop a hill, complete with incredible views. The Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is rich, juicy, and balanced, and the Hyde Vineyard Syrah will turn you into a cheerleader of the oft-misunderstood grape.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

It doesn't get much prettier than this. Once a hidden gem drawing lovers of theater and local, seasonal farm fare, Niagara on the Lake is also chock-full of wineries — 38, to be exact. The wineries, many of which also offer full-service dining, are mostly spread out, so you'll probably want to rent a bike or arrange for a tour to take you around the cute little town. Start out at Reif Estate, where wines are tasted in a sensory garden. Peller Estates Winery and Restaurant is open for lunch and makes for a good second stop along your wine journey. Two Sisters is less than 15 minutes on foot from Peller, making it a good post-meal option between tastings. If you can get to Southbrook , which enjoys the status of being Canada's first wine estate to obtain both organic and biodynamic certification, tasting the Triomphe Orange is mandatory.

The North Fork

It's all too easy to while away an afternoon sipping wine on the North Fork of Long Island, AKA the sunniest spot in New York State. While definitely no longer under-the-radar, there are enough wineries and enough routes to keep the intimate vibes going. Although some visitors to the region swear by fall as the best time to visit the beaches and snag tables at popular restaurants, the autumn wine scene is where it's really at. Want to taste old-world wines in a new-world vineyard? Raphael's Cabernet Franc and Merlot are not to be missed. From there, enjoy a warm welcome from nearby Bedell Cellars , where both children and dogs are welcome. If you want to visit Paumanok , arguably the most well-known of the region's wineries, reservations are recommended. Of course, you could opt for a tasting at Palmer Vineyard instead, where walk-ins are welcome, and rosé is still flowing. Either way, you're in for a treat, no ocean view required.

The Okanagan Valley

The first thing most people think of when they think of Canada's rugged western province is probably not wine. Considering the bevy of activities on hand all around British Columbia, that's fair. But those in-the-know-folks and devout lovers of the boozy grape juice are well aware of Kelowna's deserved spot on the wine trail. Roughly 40 wineries dot the Left and Right Bank of Okanagan Lake, providing superior views and relaxing vibes. Mission Hill Family Estate deserves every accolade it's been bestowed — in a not-to-shabby showing, it is Canada's only winery to win Winery of the Year five times — but go for yourself to see what makes their Viognier and Pinot Blanc so special. Afterwards, head to Indigenous World Winery for a truly unique experience. Cap off the tour with a glass of Viognier, Frizzante at Little Straw Vineyards.

It's been fun to see California's wine scene expand outside of the state's northern region, often just referred to as "wine country" by domestic travelers, especially because a funky city like Santa Cruz, whose wine cup runneth over, is a blast to visit in general. Fall may be the quintessential beach town's best-kept secret though. Biking is an especially fun way to embark on a tour of the beloved surf city's wine scene. Rexford's Chardonnay has the potential to win over even the staunchest ABC-er (Anything-But-Chardonnay), and if it's sustainability that you're after, a visit to Storrs is in order. Another excellent producer of Chardonnay and other Burgundian grapes, all of the grapes are grown with minimal intervention in a biodynamic setting. Of note also: Sone Cellars , MJA , and Silver Mountain .

21 Wineries In The US You Need To Visit At Least Once

vineyard at sunset

America's fascination with wine dates all the way back to the 16th century with the arrival of Ponce de Leon from France. However, it took a while for new settlers to perfect the art of growing their wine grapes on American soil, as unfamiliar pests and other interferences got in the way. It wasn't until the 1800s that people began successfully creating beautiful vineyards across the United States (via The Conversation ).

That history brings us to today, with more than 11,000 wineries in the 50 states. California leads the way, hosting more than half of the country's wineries (per Statista ). With so many incredible wineries full of gorgeous scenery, entertainment, relaxing vibes, and delicious wines, it can certainly be a challenge to choose which ones are must-visits.

This guide highlights some of the very best wineries in the U.S. to add to your bucket list wherever your travels take you.

1. Winery Oeno

If you're looking for a different experience when visiting a winery, then you can't afford to skip Winery Oeno . While most wineries offer more of a sit-down-and-relax atmosphere, this one is a hands-on approach to making your own wine. Nestled in gorgeous Kailua, Hawaii, Winery Oeno has been crafting unique wines, like Tropical Coconut Lime Sangria and Toasted Caramel Port Wine, since 2008. Its Chalkboard Series is among its most popular offerings and showcases tasty flavors like Peach Chardonnay and Plum Passion Sangria.

Visitors can taste wines to figure out what they like before making their own, which includes everything right down to selecting the labels. Or, bring a whole group with you to make memories for a bachelor or bachelorette party, anniversary, birthday, or other special events. Several Tripadvisor reviews rave about the welcoming experience, which reportedly puts customers at ease so they can enjoy this one-of-a-kind day out.

2. Chateau Montelena Winery

It's tough to beat the astounding scenery that you'll find at Chateau Montelena Winery in Calistoga, California. Situated in the popular, wine-rich Napa Valley, the winery embodies everything you think about when you think of California vineyards . Taste wine casually or book a luxurious, concierge-planned and guided event starting at $250 per person if you want to go all-out during your stay. Plus, visitors can experience the breathtaking stone castle — a sight that makes an ideal photoshoot backdrop — a Chinese garden, and other eye-catching views right on the estate's grounds.

This winery also has a prestigious historical accolade to its name. In 1976, Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay won the Judgment of Paris, a blind taste-test competition between Californian and French wines (via Napa Valley ). To this day the event is widely talked about in the world of wine connoisseurs. Tripadvisor reviewers mention enjoying the winery's history as much as they enjoy sipping the wine when they visit.

3. Bear Creek Winery

If you make the trek to Alaska, be sure to visit Bear Creek Winery . This gem of a winery emphasizes unique fruity flavors in its wine blends, with fresh fruit sourced from a network of Alaskan farmers. Visitors can choose among 15 wines to taste, offered in a range of flavors and bodies to suit just about any wine drinker's preferences.

Some popular options that fans love? Bear Creek Winery's Glacier Bear Blueberry wine, rhubarb-infused Alaska Chardonnay, and Pomegranate wine. As one Yelp reviewer mentions, "They offer flights for $5 that allow you to try up to eight different flavors of wine," adding that "Most of the wines are on the sweeter side." So, you'll have an affordable opportunity to test out the wines and find those you like best before committing to buying.

Another perk of this winery is its relaxing accommodations set in a secluded wooded area that overlooks Kachemak Bay. Lodging includes kitchenettes and private baths to make your stay cozy while keeping you connected with Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. One Yelp reviewer also mentions getting a complimentary wine bottle and fleece robes during their stay.

4. Charron Vineyard and Winery

Located near the Emperita Mountains in Arizona, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the Tuscon valley as they eat, drink, and socialize at  Charron Vineyards . Warmer temperatures throughout the year make Charron the perfect spot to cool off with one of their popular wine slushies or stick to a traditional format and taste from a selection of 16 types of wine. Charron also hosts a few events a month, such as holiday celebrations and wine festivals, making it a go-to entertainment spot throughout the year.

Charron is known for its pet-friendly atmosphere, and according to BringFido , well-behaved pets are welcome to join their humans for a day at the winery. One happy dog parent states, "Both 4 legged and 2 legged guests get spoiled rotten at Charron Vineyards. Our dogs were welcomed with treats, water, and belly rubs from the staff and other dog-loving customers." Bring the whole family and stay for the day!

5. Seven Birches Winery

Guests of the RiverWalk Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire, don't have to travel far to enjoy tasty wines from Seven Birches Winery  which became a part of the resort in 2016. However, you don't have to be a resort guest to sample what the winery has to offer, including its Cabernet Sauvignon, Ice Apple Wine, and Rhythm Ciders. Experience the wine tasting room or hang with your group at the Atrium Wine Bar which offers wine flights, food, and a spacious outdoor patio. If you want to learn more, attend a tour with the vineyard manager to discover how each wine is made.

Can't make it in person to the winery but still want to try the wines? Sample Seven Birches Winery's wines with a virtual tasting for 10 or more people in select states. Seven Birches will ship flights of wine to your home with tasting notes, as you meet online with experienced wine hosts who help your group along its tasting journey.

6. Hall Wines

Blend artwork, engaging tours, incredible tasting experiences, and yummy food in the Napa Valley, and what do you get? Hall Wines in St. Helena, California. This winery leaves a truly unique impression on guests, from its eye-catching architecture to its interesting sculptures both inside and outside — including a giant leaping bunny and hanging blown-glass decor. In fact, each tasting room has its own look, allowing guests to visit multiple times and always end up with a different experience.

Patrons can also book a private wine experience to get a more intimate look at the vineyards, tour the winery, or enjoy a glass of wine or two in a beautiful setting. The winery has received a perfect score from the prestigious publication Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, sparking owners Craig Hall and Kathryn Walt Hall to co-write a book about their big win, fittingly entitled "A Perfect Score." Their entire selection has continuously been awarded high scores, so you're guaranteed an enjoyable tasting.

7. Cream Ridge Winery

New Jersey is home to more than 50 licensed wineries (via the State of New Jersey Department of Agriculture ), but many visitors agree that Cream Ridge Winery is a must-see. Founded in 1988, Cream Ridge Winery utilizes homegrown grapes, cranberries, and other fruits to create its fruity wine flavors. Among the favorites, try Barbera for hints of cherry, or Catawba, a blush wine featuring a naturally pink grape.

Despite its modest size, Cream Ridge Winery provides plenty for guests to experience. Enjoy festivals with food trucks, live music, and vendors, attend food and wine pairings, or experience a winemaking class with your friends and family. According to Tripadvisor reviewers , the small-town feel of Cream Ridge Winery is one of the many reasons patrons keep coming back. One fan writes, "Cream Ridge Winery is a must if you want great wine and a friendly atmosphere. I have been coming here for 19 years. The staff makes you always feel special and cared for. They are like family to us. If you are looking for a place to feed your soul, this is the place."

8. Oliver Winery

Pegged as one of Travel + Leisure's top 25 vineyards across the United States, Oliver Winery started as a basement hobby and grew to become one of the largest wineries in the country. Located in Bloomington, Indiana, the establishment prides itself on community, creating wines for every taste bud, and making charitable donations to the community and important causes, such as local Rotary Clubs and the American Cancer Society.

Choose among a diverse variety of beverages, from the new Lemon Moscato to the bold and refreshing Bourbon Barrel Hard Cider. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also reserve a tasting for a more individualized experience. Or, book a two-hour picnic to enjoy the beautiful grounds with your wine and a selection of gourmet meat and cheese.

14 Unique Winery Tours From Around The World

A huge part of the appeal of visiting a winery is being able to taste the wines on-site, often close to the vineyards that produced the grapes. Seeing the environment responsible for the wine in your glass really ties the whole experience together, especially if you can visit the cellar and see some of the winemaking facilities. While that's already a fun outing for any oenophile, some wineries take it up a notch and offer tours that transform the day into an unforgettable experience.

With wineries often located in regions with striking surroundings, it's no surprise that many organized visits highlight the features that make these locations one-of-a-kind. Whether viewing vineyards from up in the sky, pairing wine with creative elements, or showcasing the natural wonders that make up the landscapes, there are plenty of ways to expand your love of wine beyond the glass. Of course, you'll also get to taste the wine as you explore these unique winery tours from around the world.

Hot Air Balloon Ride At Bodegas Muga (Haro, Spain)

Start your tour of Bodegas Muga in Haro, Spain with a bird's-eye view after being whisked off to a hot air balloon awaiting inflation. Along with a group of visitors, you'll assist in the pre-departure process before taking off above the vineyards and surrounding areas. For a premium price, opt for the private package and soar high with only your select group of guests.

Located in the region of Rioja, Bodegas Muga has no shortage of dazzling landscapes to view. Take in the rolling hills, plateaus, endless vineyards, and unforgettable beauty of one of Spain's most prized winemaking regions . Considering the lack of steering capacities, your point of arrival will be up to the whims of the wind and the hot air balloon. Nevertheless, once you're back on the ground you'll be transported to the winery for a tasting and optional guided tour. Tie the day together by sipping on top Rioja wines, made with native tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano, macabeo, and malvasia grape varieties.

VR Winery Visit At Campo Alla Sughera (Bolgheri, Italy)

Bolgheri is famous in Tuscany for being home to the region's prestigious Super Tuscan wines, primarily made with international rather than regional grape varieties. Now, Campo alla Sughera is introducing an immersive virtual reality experience that goes beyond viticultural innovation. Whereas some wineries offer the chance to take part in the laborious harvest, this tour provides insider knowledge without the backbreaking work.

Simply don a VR visor and witness the many stages of a vineyard and winery during harvest time, from hand-picking the juicy grapes on the vines to transferring them to the tanks in the cellar. Additionally, guests will be guided through the physical winery, cellar, and vineyards to see where the magic truly takes place. Finally, the tour ends with a tasting that includes four of Campo alla Sughera's top wines made with varieties like cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot, offering visitors a peak experience from start to finish.

Icewine Experience At Inniskillin (Niagara, Canada)

Although it's not exclusive to Canada, the country's viticultural repertoire is commonly associated with icewine. In Niagara, Ontario, Inniskillin is arguably responsible for much of this international clout, winning a top award at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France in 1991. Since, the winery continues to produce exceptional icewine (and plenty of other styles as well), offering an icewine experience for guests who want to take a closer look at the chilly process.

To understand everything you need to know about icewine , taste a flight of three wines, sampling them in assorted glasses to savor the elements that make each one distinct. Sparkling icewine and assorted grape varieties provide a broader tasting experience for novices and aficionados alike. Additionally, a few tasty morsels accompany the wine samples, highlighting some of the many ways of pairing icewine. Considering the premium price of a bottle of icewine, partaking in this tour is a valuable way to discover what you love most about this unique style.

Underground Cellar Labyrinth At Cricova Winery (Moldova)

Anyone with a fear of confined spaces might want to skip out on Cricova Winery's underground cellar labyrinth tour. The Moldovan winery is home to what it describes as a "subterranean city" with streets holding endless rows of wine casks. Designed following extensive limestone excavation (to build a neighboring city), the roads are almost 300 feet below ground, making it all the more exciting to venture down during the guided tour. The maze of lanes stretches for around 75 miles, holding over one million wine bottles.

The tour makes its way through segments of the route by transporting guests on a small train and can be combined with a wine-tasting flight in one of the underground tasting rooms. You might even catch sight of exclusive wine collections belonging to Putin and other political figures. Cricova is known for its traditional method of sparkling wine, but you can also taste wines made with cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and muscat.

Blend Your Own Wine At d'Arenberg (McLaren Vale, Australia)

A little work never hurt. At d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale, South Australia, winery guests get to step into the role of a winemaker at The Blending Bench. The real heavy lifting is done for you ahead of time, as the grapes have already been harvested, pressed, and fermented. Instead, you'll be presented with three samples of shiraz wine to blend at your discretion. McLaren Vale is home to some of the top shiraz vines in Australia, so you'll be working with the best.

Aside from highlighting the nuances of the different base wines, the process will finetune your senses and assist you in identifying the qualities you prefer in your wine. There's plenty of sipping involved as you hone in on the individual characteristics. You won't be going home empty-handed, either. Once you've completed your custom blend, it's transferred to a 750-milliliter bottle that you can take home to enjoy at your leisure. If you want to expand on this experience, pair it with an eight-course dinner with wine at the on-site restaurant.

Underwater Cellar Dive At Edivo Vina (Hrvatska, Croatia)

Scuba diving and wine don't usually go hand in hand, but at Edivo Vina in Hrvatska, Croatia, an underwater cellar awaits exploration. The winery doesn't age all of its wine in the Adriatic Sea, but a selection of  Croatian coral wine is aged in the watery depths . Made with local Croatian grapes, the wine is transferred to glass bottles and stored in amphora vessels before being submerged in steel cages around 60-80 feet below the surface and nestled in a shipwreck. The cool, stable climate and tranquil setting appear to be optimal for the wine's maturation process.

Following a short boat ride to the site, certified divers can venture down to the cellar with a PADI instructor. All of the required equipment is available for rent, making it a fun way to dive and see an underwater winery on the same tour. Following the dive, a mixed selection of wines (aged above and below water) is available for tasting along with light snacks at Edivo Wine Bar.

Art Museum Tasting At Hess Persson Estates (Napa, California)

For many oenophiles, wine is an art, so it makes sense to combine a sensory tasting experience with a visual arts one. At Hess Person Estates in Napa Valley, the two come together seamlessly with the on-site art gallery. Art lovers can tour the Hess Collection Contemporary Art Museum with the director of art, who spent dozens of years familiarizing himself with the pieces alongside the founder. Engage with the dynamic works in a small group as you explore the various meanings and sensations that arise.

Once the visual arts tour is complete, you will be treated to an educational wine-tasting experience with one of the viticultural experts. With vineyards located on Mount Veeder and surrounding areas, the wines are all infused with the complexities and nuances of the varied terrains. Try top-tier cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and chardonnay, among other well-executed classic varieties.

Dog Hike And Tasting At Kunde Family Winery (Sonoma, California)

If you like to bring your four-legged bestie everywhere you go, then schedule a visit to Kunde Family Winery. Located in Sonoma, California, the fifth-generation family-owned winery is the perfect place for a hike followed by wine tasting. It's worth noting the hike lasts around four hours and takes you through a valley and into the Mayacamas Mountain range, so skip the winery-chic fashion and lace up your hiking boots. Described as "moderately strenuous," you'll want to ensure your dog is up for the activity, too.

Nevertheless, the beautiful views make the effort well worth it, and the included wine tasting and lunch provide you with plenty of sustenance to refuel after the hike. Options like viognier, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, syrah, and zinfandel are just some of the varieties you can pair with your meal. Aside from working out your body, you'll also work out your mind as you learn about the viticultural and winemaking practices in the vineyards and cellar. Dog lovers will be pleased to know that part of the tour proceeds are allocated to local dog rescue projects.

Trek With Llamas At Divine Llama Vineyards (East Bend, North Carolina)

If you don't have a dog to bring to your winery outing, consider heading to Divine Llama Vineyards in East Bend, North Carolina. The farm is home to the largest population of llamas in the Southeast, making it an excellent spot to better acquaint yourself with the furry animals. The tour consists of about two hours of hiking in mixed terrain, passing forests, rolling hills, and a creek. You'll be hiking with llamas in tow, with opportunities to feed them and snap some pictures to commemorate the moment.

The hike finishes back at the winery where you'll get to sample the wines. Some classic varieties like merlot and cabernet franc are featured, as well as hybrid wine grapes that are better suited for the climate  and other fruits like blackberries and peaches. The winery regularly hosts local food trucks with assorted bites, or feel free to pack a picnic and make a day out of your visit to Divine Llama Vineyards.

Tasting In A Bunker At Château Siran (Bordeaux, France)

You might associate Bordeaux, France, with some of the most prestigious wineries in the world, but it's also the location of an anti-atomic bunker built during the Cold War that now stores tens of thousands of bottles dating as far back as the early 1900s. At Château Siran, a family-owned winery in the Margaux appellation, visitors can partake in a vertical tasting of three of the winery's vintages in an underground bunker. For escape room enthusiasts, an alternate tour offers an "escape game" experience in the bunker, highlighting its armor-like characteristics.

Château Siran wines consist of a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot. The latter is often featured in smaller quantities in Bordeaux, but its notable presence here adds an edge to the Siran blend. A vertical tasting allows guests to taste the evolution of the wine over the years, adding a historical layer to the tour that mirrors the setting. If you tend to feel claustrophobic in enclosed areas, skip the underground visit and savor the wines in the tasting room.

Horseback Ride And Tasting At Tenuta Torciano (Tuscany, Italy)

Natural landscapes and wineries go hand in hand, so it's no surprise that many vineyard tours take advantage of the scenery. At Tenuta Torciano in Tuscany, guests can go horseback riding in the surrounding hills of the Chianti region. Located close to the medieval town of San Gimignano, the excursion is the perfect outing for wine, nature, and history aficionados. The ride lasts about an hour, allowing visitors to experience the serene backdrop of the vineyards.

After dismounting, guests are provided with wine samples and Tuscan appetizers as they learn about the various facets of local winemaking. The Italian geographical region is most known for the sangiovese grape, and at Tenuta Torciano you can taste it in various DOCG wines such as Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Morellino di Scansano. Super Tuscan blends made with international grapes like cabernet sauvignon and merlot are available as well, along with the local white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG. A classic wine and food pairing -- including charcuterie, cheese, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar -- ensures both foodies and oenophiles will find something they love.

Most Instagrammable Wine Tour At Trius Winery (Niagara, Canada)

At Trius Winery in Niagara, Ontario, wine lovers can embark on an experience touted as "the most Intagrammable winery tour on the planet." Granted, an existing interest in Instagram and a perfectly curated design and setting will boost your overall enjoyment of the visit, but it's not a prerequisite.

#TheTriusTour takes winery-goers through an art installation paired with wine samples. Taste the rosé, made with gamay and syrah grapes, in the floral Rosé Lounge overlooking the vineyards. Then, make your way to the Sparkling House, where you can sit in a swing, made to mimic the cage on the cork of a bottle of bubbly. Don't miss out on the Bubble Tub as you sip on the assorted selection of traditional method sparkling wines and finish the tour at the classy Brut Bar. It's not just a photo-op either; guides are available to answer any questions regarding winemaking and the wines, rounding out the Canadian winery experience from start to finish.

Eco Wine Safari At Avondale Wine (Paarl, South Africa)

South Africa is a hot spot for safari tourism, and at Avondale Wine in Paarl, visitors can take part in a different spin on the classic. Here, guests can enjoy a leisurely tour of the vineyards from the comfort of a tractor-drawn cart during the Eco Wine Safari. After sipping on a glass of MCC (Methode Cap Classique), South Africa's premium traditional method sparkling wine, climb on board to explore the vineyards as you learn about the viticultural practices at Avondale Wine. Taste a range of wines within steps of the vines that grew the fruit for a close-up look at the interaction between wine and its terroir.

Continue the tour in the cellars, where you'll see Avondale's gravity-flow method for transferring wine to underground tanks. Upon returning to the Tasting Gallery, pick up a bottle of your favorite sample or try something new from the selection, which includes grape varieties such as chenin blanc, viognier, roussanne, grenache, syrah, and plenty more. The winery also features a changing art exhibit, providing guests with a full spectrum of experiences during the tour.

Helicopter Tour At Seppeltsfield Wines (Barossa, Australia)

If you want to experience a winery from up above, a helicopter is the most efficient mode of transport. At Seppeltsfield Winery in Australia's Barossa Valley, guests can hop on a helicopter ride and survey the vineyards from the sky. Depending on the tour you book, you'll fly for about half an hour, overseeing the vines and surrounding areas as you take in the valley's natural wonders complete with rolling hills and palm trees. Considering its proximity to other wineries, you'll get your fill of bird's-eye vineyard views.

Once you're back at the winery, make your way to the tasting room to sample a flight of wines. Seppeltsfield grows a wide range of varieties, including white grapes like riesling and vermentino and red grapes like Nero d'Avola, grenache, and shiraz -- the darling of Barossa. While you're on-site, take advantage of the multitude of ongoing projects at the estate, including a cooperage, a craft and design studio gallery, and a soap factory making raw soap and skin products. With so much to do, you might as well stay the night at The Lodge at Seppeltsfield to make the most of it.

2024 PGA Championship picks to win: Here’s who we are betting on at Valhalla

  • Follow on Twitter

Ludvig Aberg last month at the Masters, where he finished second.

Getty Images

Late Sunday afternoon on the Masters final day, Peter Hanson made a declaration to a handful of reporters. His student had given it a good run at Augusta, finishing runner-up to Scottie Scheffler , and now the talk turned to the next month and the next major, the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky.

Only Ludvig Aberg and Team Aberg needed no reminders of what was ahead.

They were seemingly counting down the days.

“I’m excited for Kentucky,” Hanson said. “Can’t wait.”

PGA Championship Valhalla

2024 PGA Championship sleeper picks: Here’s who might break out at Valhalla

Was it just coach speak? Perhaps. It wasn’t as if Hanson was going to say he wasn’t amped up. But the young superstar didn’t shutter the talk, either. In his press conference after his round, Aberg was told of his coach’s comment, and he was then asked if he now felt differently going into the PGA.

“I think so,” Aberg said. “This being my first major championship, you never really know what it’s going to be like until you’re there and experience it. I think this week has given me a lot of experiences and a lot of lessons learned in terms of those things. It makes me really hungry, and it makes me want to do it again and again, I think.”

It’s something you like to hear this week, should you be trying to pick a winner with the PGA now upon us. Aberg has the complete bag. He has the steady approach. Now, though he sat out last week with a knee injury, he’s champing at the bit to get going again, to borrow a phrase originated with horses, as the PGA settles in in Kentucky Derby country.

With that, members of our staff have each made a to-win selection to assist you with your own weekly picks , whether those are for a low-stakes office fantasy league, or (legal!) big-bucks bets with a sportsbook. It’s an enjoyable endeavor for us. Deploy it as you wish.

On to our analysis.

2024 PGA Championship picks to win

PGA Tour golfers aren't the only ones who can make some 💰 starting next Thursday. You can too! Here are a few tips. https://t.co/uldLYRZvRh — Nick Piastowski (@nickpia) June 5, 2020

Ryan Barath

To-win: Brooks Koepka, +1,400. Brooks has become a PGA Championship specialist, and his game seems to be coming into form after a recent win on LIV. The course will be long, the rough will be thick, and if he just does “Brooks things” like he did last year at Oak Hill, it would give him four of the past seven PGAs, which is a pretty incredible feat.

Adam Christensen

To-win: Xander Schauffele, +1,800. Xander feels like too talented a player to finish his career without a major win. He’s been putting the ball extremely well and has gained some speed off the tee recently, which will help at Valhalla. It’s probably going to be Scottie, but if it’s not, I love Xander’s chances.

James Colgan

To-win: Scottie Scheffler +400. Has anyone proven they can beat him? No? OK, still rolling with Scottie.

Dylan Dethier

To-win: Xander Schauffele, +1,800. Schauffele at 18-1 is a massive bargain. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself as I pick him for the 18th consecutive major. But other than Scottie, nobody is playing much better golf than this fella. He’ll be in the mix.

Emma Devine

To-win: Brooks Koepka, +1,400. Yes, Brooks is fresh off a win. Yes, Brooks historically dominates PGA Championships. But the real reason Brooks is taking it home at Valhalla? He was a recent guest of the “Scoop,” of course! PLUS, his wife, Jena, Sims was featured last year, making that duo the only married couple to both be featured guests. Tough to bet against the Scoop Effect on this one.

Nick Dimengo

To-win: Scottie Scheffler, +400. I can’t believe I’m actually doing this, but, whatever. Nobody’s been better than Scottie this year. Though he’s about to become a new dad, meaning little-to-no sleep and lots of distractions, the world’s No. 1-ranked player can be running off adrenaline and fumes and still shoot lower than anyone in the field. He’s that good, and I think we’re about to see a historic 2024 from him.

Connor Federico

To-win: Rory McIlroy, +1,200. Ten years ago, Rory won his fourth major title with a victory at Valhalla, edging out the likes of Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler. But he’s been major-less since. Can he recapture that magic from a decade ago? I like his odds of repeating history.

Viktor Hovland and caddie Shay Knight at the Puerto Rico Open in February.

How often favorites win tournaments (and when to bet on them)

Jack Hirsh

To win: Rory McIlroy, +1,200. The heart wants what the heart wants. He was really ticked last year when Brooks got his fifth major title to move ahead of him. It’s safe to say that McIlroy has finally found his form in 2024 with his team win at Zurich. What a way to end his major title drought than to win at Valhalla — where his major drought began 10 years ago. Also, I’m just not 100 percent sure Scottie Scheffler is going to play. And if he does, he’ll be sleep-deprived from new fatherhood.

Jessica Marksbury

To-win: Brooks Koepka, +1,400. Koepka has proven himself to be a PGA king over the past decade, with eight top-15 finishes since 2015 — not to mention three wins and one runner-up in the past six years. Valhalla seems like a course that will play to his strengths, so there’s no way I’m going to underestimate him now.

Zephyr Melton

To-win: Scottie Scheffler, +400. It’s tough to pick anyone but Scottie at this point. Until someone proves they can dethrone him while he’s playing this well, I’ve got to continue picking him.

Nick Piastowski

To-win: Brooks Koepka, +1,400. He was mad after his Masters finish. That’s all I need to hear.

To-win: Bryson DeChambeau, +2,500. Bryson might as well be in the witness protection program these days for all we see of him. But our glimpse of him at Augusta was a good reminder of how much game is lurking in him. And Valhalla should be the perfect kind of course for him to bomb-and-gouge his way around.

Taylor Swift sings 'The Alchemy' as Travis Kelce attends Eras Tour in Paris

winery tours us

PARIS — Taylor Swift sang "The Alchemy" as part of her acoustic set of surprise songs during Sunday's Eras Tour show with boyfriend Travis Kelce in attendance. Several football metaphors in the song have led fans to believe Swift wrote it about the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.

"Can you believe this is the 87th show?" Swift asked during her acoustic set in La Défense Arena. Kelce wears No. 87. She then played a mashup on guitar of "The Alchemy" from her new album "The Tortured Poets Department" with "Treacherous" from "Red."

Kelce stood in his box as Swift glanced up at him and the crowd looked back and forth between the two.

"This happens once every few lifetimes," Swift sang. "These chemicals hit me like white wine.”

The crowd roared.

Kelce joined 40,000-plus fans for the fourth and final night of Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour in Paris. He watched from a box seat alongside actor Bradley Cooper, super model Gigi Hadid and rock star Lenny Kravitz.

The concert marks the fifth time Kelce has appeared at the tour since the couple went public last year. His first stop was Buenos Aires, Argentina, followed by Sydney, Australia, and two nights in Singapore . Swift has changed the “Karma” lyrics to "guy on the Chiefs" every time Kelce has cheered her on from the sidelines.

Kelce hadn’t seen the new set list live since Swift switched up the eras and added her 11th era, “ The Tortured Poets Department .” The singer-songwriter said she’s been working on the changes for 8-9 months (since last fall).

Hadid has famously been a member of Swift's squad for years now and has been dating Cooper for several months.

Other celebrities spotted in the crowd included Grey's Anatomy actor Jessica Capshaw and singer Christina Milian.

Her next stop is Stockholm, Sweden, as she continues the European leg of the tour.
