Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

what is annual travel insurance?

An annual travel insurance policy is for travellers who leave home multiple times a year on shorter trips. This differs from a year-long single trip policy, which provides continuous cover for you to be away from home for one twelve-month long trip. Annual travel insurance policies have different maximum trip duration limits - that is, the maximum number of days you can spend overseas before you have to come home again. For example, if you purchase a 30-day annual travel insurance policy, you can go on a ten-day trip to Bali for a friend's wedding in April, go on a seven-day Pacific cruise in July, go trekking for three weeks in New Zealand and have a month-long break over Christmas in the USA, and they can all be covered under the one policy. Check out our guide on annual travel insurance and the limits that apply. If you don’t know where you’re travelling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the appropriate region for your trip. Stopovers of less than 48 hours generally do not need to be included (excluding USA and Canada). Worldwide  means anywhere in the world Americas  means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean Europe  means all European countries, including UK Middle East  refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran Asia  generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers, this excludes Japan* Pacific  means the South-West Pacific, New Zealand and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in Australian waters Australia  means domestic travel within Australia only *Some variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and the Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site. Depending on your circumstances, such as your age, and your trip durations and destinations, it can sometimes be cheaper to buy two or three single trip policies than an annual policy, so there are savings to be made by shopping around and comparing your options. Pre-existing medical conditions

Having pre-existing medical conditions doesn't mean you can't get cover or that it has to be expensive. It simply means that you need to dig a little deeper when doing your research.

Annual INSURANCE faqS

What does annual travel insurance mean.

This may seem like a silly question, but believe it or not, it confuses a lot of travellers! A multi-trip policy, also known as a frequent traveller policy covers you for an unlimited number of short trips throughout the year. Not to be confused with a single-trip policy which is one trip that lasts anywhere from 2 days to 12 months in duration.

Can I buy an annual multi-trip policy at any age?

No, annual multi-trip policies tend to have age limits of around 65 years. Check out our annual travel insurance guide to learn more. Use our quote box above to compare frequent traveller policies to see what cover is available for your age.

How many trips can I take a year with annual cover?

As many as you like! That's the beauty of this product. There are no restrictions on the number of holidays you can take in a year, and you don't even need to tell your insurer each time you take a trip.

Are there trip duration limits?

Yes, that's the catch! When purchasing an annual policy, you must allocate a maximum trip duration which means you cannot go on holiday for more days than specified. See our guide for annual policy trip limits .

Am I covered for business and leisure trips?

Most insurers cover you whether you're travelling for business or pleasure but the benefits may vary. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” travel insurance for business travellers  so it would pay to contact your insurer directly if you had something specific in mind.  Some insurers offer annual business or corporate travel insurance and b usiness equipment may not be covered under personal policies if you're not personally out of pocket. What pre-existing illnesses does frequent travel insurance cover?

Most insurers have a list of pre-existing medical conditions that are automatically covered for free like asthma, cataracts, some types of diabetes, hypertension which do not require an assessment or declaration form to be submitted. If you have a pre-existing medical condition not listed, you may be able to get cover for an additional fee.  If you develop an illness lets say six months into your annual policy, you must tell your insurer as that condition would be considered pre-existing the next time you decide to take a trip. See more about pre-existing conditions and medical assessments here.

Southern cross

Pros and cons

  • It's affordable compared to other popular insurers including Cover-More and Allianz.
  • Its PDS is much easier to understand compared to the other 28 other international policies we looked at.
  • High customer ratings on Finder (4.16/5) and other popular review websites such as product review (4.7).
  • Our awards data suggests Fast Cover and Medibank tend to be slightly cheaper.
  • Customers rated Tick more highly in the Finder Customer Satisfaction Awards.
  • $2,500 cap on cancellations is low and risky for expensive trips. For example, it's unlimited with Fast Cover.

How Southern Cross Travel Insurance compares

*Example quote based on a single 40-year-old travelling to Bali for 2 weeks. Comprehensive policies. Data collected in October 2023.

Why we picked it

SCTI has one of the best claims experiences and an easy-to-read PDS. It's not just us that thinks so. It earned a finalist spot for General Insurance Claims Team of the Year at The International Travel & Health Insurance Journal Awards and won the Best Plain English Legal Document at the most recent Plain Language Awards.

SCTI also received a mere 3 complaints to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) in the latest period. By comparison, Mitsui, which underwrites insurers including InsureandGo, received 47. Very large insurers such as Zurich and AWP (Allianz) received 325 and 95.

It's also consistently good value. On average, it's one of cheapest comprehensive travel insurers, according to our 2023 Finder Awards research. Out of 28 policies, only Fast Cover and Medibank were marginally cheaper.

Medibank

The majority of comprehensive travel insurance policies cover COVID now but Medibank is a standout. Its $10,000 limit for COVID related trip cancellations is double the majority of insurers. Considering that 42% of Australians spend an average of $6,765 on holidays , Medibank is a safe choice. It also has a helpline that lets you chat to a doctor at any time.

  • $10,000 cap for COVID cancellation costs and unlimited medical expenses.
  • It's cheap – $233 less than average, according to 300+ quotes we gathered.
  • 15% discount for health members (making it the cheapest out of 28 policies).
  • ahm and Travel Insurance Saver also cover up to $10,000 for cancellations.
  • Only Medibank and ahm health members can access discount.
  • $15,000 cap for luggage. SCTI and Cover-More have a $25,000 cap.

How Medibank Travel Insurance compares

Out of 19 comprehensive travel insurance policies, Medibank was one of three to come with a $10,000 cap on COVID related cancellations. ahm and Travel Insurance Saver also cover COVID related cancellations. However, Medibank has a higher Finder Score.

Additionally, our research showed a Medibank international policy cost $353 on average for a 2-week trip overseas. That's $233 cheaper than average, according to our research of 28 policies. It's even cheaper if you're a Medibank or ahm member. It could knock $53 off a $353 policy.

World2cover logo

World2Cover lets kids under 25 travel for free, so long as they're financially dependent on you. Most insurers including Cover-More and Southern Cross stop offering free cover when your children turn 20. It has a 9.4 Finder Score and out of the 50+ Product Disclosure Statements I looked at, it was one of the easiest to understand.

  • Can cover kids up to the age of 25
  • Up to $3,500 Covid cancellation cover per person – that's more than SCTI and Cover-More
  • Unlimited cancellation cover
  • Its underwriter received 43 complaints to AFCA – 21 more than Chubb and 40 more than SCTI (similar sized insurers)
  • $5,000 rental car excess is lower than some e.g. Southern Cross ($10,000) and Allianz ($6,000)

How World2Cover Travel Insurance compares

*Example quote based on two 40-year-olds travelling to Bali for 2 weeks with 3 children aged 14, 12 and 7. Comprehensive policies selected. Data collected in October 2023.

Out of 20 travel insurers, World2Cover was one of the only brands to cover children up to the age of 25. It also doesn't have a limit on how many dependents can travel for free. Allianz can also cover kids on a family policy. However, it typically cost more in our research.

insureandgo

  • It's very cheap. Out of 23 insurers, it's $180+ less than average.
  • Get 10% off your travel insurance policy, using the code Finder10.
  • Up to $7,500 towards car rental excess cover. That's $2,500 better than most.
  • We found its PDS can be confusing and hard to understand.
  • Cover-More, Fast Cover and SCTI also offer reasonably priced domestic policies.
  • You absolutely need to read the PDS beforehand. There are lots of conditions attached to every benefit.

How InsureandGo Travel Insurance compares

*Example quote based on a single 40-year-old travelling in Australia for 1 week. All are domestic policies. Data collected in October 2023.

It's competitively-priced and won Finder's 2023 Best Domestic Travel Insurance Award. We looked at 23 domestic travel insurance policies as part of the awards and scored the same 14 features for every policy. These benefits included COVID rearrangement costs, theft or damage to luggage and rental car excess cover.

InsureandGo scored highly for a number of benefits including rental car excess cover, COVID cover, cancellation cover and luggage cover. You get up to $50,000 for cancellations, $25,000 for travel delays, $8,000 for lost luggage, $5,000 for COVID cancellation and rearrangement costs and $7,500 for rental car excess cover.

Similarly, it's good if you plan to rent a car while you're away. InsureandGo's top policy will cover the rental car excess for up to $7,500 if your car is damaged, stolen or involved in an accident. The average is $5,000. This sometimes isn't enough to cover the excess rental car companies charge.

It is also cheaper on average. Overall, it ranked in first place.

Top 5 policies in travel insurance – domestic

  • InsureandGo Gold Domestic
  • Australia Post Domestic Travel Insurance
  • Cover-More Domestic Comprehensive Travel Insurance
  • NRMA Domestic Comprehensive Travel Insurance
  • Southern Cross Domestic Travel Insurance

Its main drawback is its Product Disclosure Statement which contains lots of conditions and could leave room for instances where you won't be covered. For example, it can cover cancelling your trip before departure but only for a specific number of reasons. These include: " your unforeseeable death, injury or illness; you have to go to court to be a witness or be on a jury (but not as an expert witness); there is an accident involving a vehicle you were planning to travel in, which happens within seven days before the date you planned to leave and means you cannot use the vehicle (This only applies to self-drive holidays). "

Keep in mind: there's no single best travel insurance policy that suits everyone, since we all have different travel plans and needs.

Over 2 million left Australian shores in December 2023, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics . That's an annual increase of 500,000+ people.

Tom Goodwin

Tom's trip to the UK

I've got family in the UK, so I've travelled there a few times over the last decade. The UK has reciprocal healthcare arrangements with Australian citizens but it's no help with cancellations or lost luggage, specifically due to COVID, which we've had issues with in the past. Luckily, our travel insurance policy covered us.

Most travel insurers offer COVID cover now and most will cover you for similar COVID-related travel expenses . However, there are still some things you can do to make sure you're getting the right policy for you:

Number 1

Take out cover for all travellers

Whether you're travelling with your partner or the whole family, make sure that you add them to the insurance policy. That way, if someone catches COVID but you don't, you'll still be covered for expenses.

Number 2

Get a policy as soon as you book your trip

That way, you're covered if you get sick and need to cancel. A few insurers including Cover-More and Easy Travel Insurance also won't accept COVID-related claims within 21 days of your trip, so make sure you take out cover at least 3 weeks before you jet off.

Number 3

Check the exclusions

It can be tedious but make sure you give the exclusions in the PDS a read before you buy. For example, you won't be covered for costs related to border closures. It means that you might be out of pocket for prepaid accommodation or booked airline tickets if the government of that country imposes a lockdown.

Coronavirus

Jillian, Kerry and Tyson travelled from Sydney to Dallas. 10 days in, Tyson (Jillian's son) caught COVID, a day before the family was supposed to leave for a ski trip in Colorado. As a result, they had to rearrange their travel plans.

Unfortunately, Jillian got COVID later and the family had to send Tyson and Kerry home to Sydney, while Jillian stayed another 4 days until she tested negative. She then rebooked her trip home.

Their insurer, Southern Cross Travel Insurance , covered just under $3,000 in costs . The family paid a $500 excess to claim on 2 events.

What's the best travel insurance with covid cover.

All the top picks we've selected come with COVID cover but Fast Cover goes a little further than most. Like many other insurers, it can help pay for COVID-related medical expenses, cancellation costs and additional accommodation. It can also cover childcare costs and medical evacuation.

How far in advance should I buy travel insurance?

It's worth getting travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. That way, you're covered straight away. If something happens – say you get sick or your flight is cancelled or delayed – you're covered.

Is it best to get a single trip or annual policy?

Single trip policies may be best if you don't plan on travelling much over the next year or, if you're going on a long trip ( annual policies cap the length you're allowed to travel per trip – typically 30, 45 or 60 days).

Annual (or multi-trip) policies may be better if you're a jet-setter who intends to travel several times a year. Generally speaking, an annual policy may work out cheaper than paying for 4 single-trip policies in a year.

But be aware, annual plans have been a little harder to come by since the pandemic.

What's considered a pre-existing condition for travel insurance?

Essentially, a pre-existing condition is any medical condition you've been diagnosed with, in a specified time period, prior to taking out cover. Such conditions include heart problems, high blood pressure and diabetes.

What's the best travel insurance for Bali?

There have been several flight cancellations and delays to Bali recently. Most travel insurance polices can reimburse you for flight cancellations. However, it's worth going with an insurer that will also cover additional travel expenses such as accommodation and pre-booked excursions. It can be very frustrating if something happens but if the cancellation is due to circumstances out of your control, your insurer is likely to cover you.

What's the best travel insurance for the US?

The US has a notoriously expensive healthcare system so it's worth getting a travel insurance policy that comes with unlimited medical expenses cover at the very least. Fortunately, most comprehensive policies offer this. Other important medical-related expenses worth considering are:

  • Hospital cash allowance. An amount you'll be given per day if you're hospitalised to pay for additional expenses.
  • Resumption of journey. This can help pay you to get home if you're very sick.

How does annual travel insurance work?

Annual travel insurance, or multi-trip insurance , is a type of cover which can offer protection for multiple trips across 12 months. You only pay one premium and providers set limits on how much you can travel, which will vary depending on who you choose to go with. Some insurers can offer cover for an unlimited number of trips taken up to a maximum of 90 days each, but this won't be the case for every provider. As such, it's important to compare your options and find out what you'll be covered for before you purchase your policy.

Travel insurance companies usually have a few requirements around taking out this sort of coverage. For example, some companies will place age limits on travellers buying this policy, such as not covering those over the age of 65, while most will require that the journey you take must start and end in Australia.

Annual travel insurance can cover you for a wide range of incidentals, all of which are subject to qualification requirements set in place by your insurer. Some of these can include:

  • Cancellation costs
  • Lost or damaged items
  • Healthcare costs
  • Personal liability in the event of an accident overseas
  • The excess on a rental car
  • Travel delay expenses such as meals and accommodation

Additionally, some providers may also allow you to bundle additional coverage into your travel insurance (depending on the type you choose), such as:

  • Cruise ship
  • Motorcycles
  • Skiing and other winter sports
  • Scuba diving and other adventure sports or activities

When should I take out annual travel insurance?

One of the key benefits of travel insurance of this kind is that, if you travel several times a year, it can potentially save time compared to taking out individual policies for each trip you embark on. As such, annual insurance can be suited to several different travellers, including:

  • Business travellers: if you’re frequently between cities for business, annual travel insurance may be able to save you from sorting insurance before every domestic or international journey.
  • Frequent jet setters: if you're someone who is planning more than two international or domestic trips each year, you may find that annual travel insurance is a more affordable option than multiple single-trip policies (though it's important to compare your options to confirm how much you may pay before you buy).
  • Families: if you’re hitting the road or the skies often with your partner, spouse or wider family members, annual coverage may save valuable time and money, depending on your situation.

Annual travel insurance is designed to suit travellers taking several trips per year (usually more than two) rather than one long holiday. Make sure you compare annual travel insurance options so you can be clear on what is and isn't covered by different providers and policies.

How do I compare annual travel insurance policies?

When you’re comparing travel insurance policies with Savvy, be sure to weigh up the following factors:

Destinations covered

Not all travel insurers will provide coverage for the same destinations around the world. As such, it's important to know the locations you're planning to travel to so you can cross-reference with different insurers and determine whether they can be covered. Some insurers also offer the ability to purchase worldwide cover, which can protect you from covered events in a wide range of countries (covered circumstances and locations will be subject to your insurer's terms and conditions).

Inclusions and exclusions

Travel insurance policies come with a range of inclusions and exclusions, which will vary depending on who you choose. It’s crucial to compare these so you can be aware of what different companies and policies include and exclude, which may help you decide on what type of cover is best for your needs.

Pre-existing conditions

Cover for pre-existing conditions varies from insurer to insurer, as each may have their own list of conditions which are automatically covered and those which aren't (some insurers may also have a list of conditions which can only be covered by paying an extra premium). As such, it’s essential to compare insurers if you have a pre-existing condition, as it may be important to find one which can offer you cover where you need it.

Covered length (and number) of trips

The number of trips covered by your policy and the maximum duration of each individual trip may vary depending on who you choose to purchase your policy with, as outlined above. Because of this, it's important to compare your options, as not every policy may suit your requirements.

If you’re a mature-aged traveller, getting an annual travel insurance policy can be tough. Some insurance companies are unlikely to cover you if you’re over the age of 65; however, there may some who set higher limits. It's important to note that receiving coverage will still be subject to you meeting your insurer's other qualification criteria.

When you make a claim on your travel insurance, you’ll need to pay a gap, known as an excess, in most cases. You can generally choose what this sum is, although different insurers may have different requirements depending on the type of cover and your profile. With some insurers, you may not be required to pay an excess in certain situations, though no excess typically leads to more costly premiums. As such, it's important to consider where your priorities lie when determining which policy and excess is most suited to your needs.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Why compare travel insurance with Savvy?

Reputable insurance partners, fast and convenient online process.

You can complete the quote, comparison and purchase process online through Savvy quickly and easily.

Competitive quote costs

Regardless of the type of insurance you’re looking for, we can help you compare between competitive quotes.

How to reduce the cost of your annual travel insurance

Shop around and compare with savvy.

When you need insurance for an upcoming holiday, shopping around is one of the best ways to sniff out the most competitive deal on the market. When you compare travel insurance policies with Savvy, you’ll have access to a side-by-side comparison of quotes based on your preferences from some of Australia's leading providers.

Consider your destinations

Not all countries will attract the same travel insurance costs, as a variety of factors can lead to one destination costing more to insure than another. As such, looking at countries which are cheaper to insure, such as those with more comprehensive healthcare systems, may help you secure a less expensive travel insurance policy.

Increase your excess

Opting to pay a higher excess will generally reduce the cost of your premium when you take out your travel insurance. This is primarily because you’re offering to take on a greater out-of-pocket cost if an unforeseen event takes place which is covered by your policy and you need to make a claim.

Avoid paying more than you need to

It's important to think carefully about the trip you're being insured for before you apply for insurance. By doing so, you can gain a greater understanding of what you do and don't need cover for, which can help you narrow down which areas of coverage aren't necessary. For instance, if you aren't going skiing, there's no need to pay more for cover.

The pros and cons of annual travel insurance

May be more affordable for frequent flyers.

Choosing an annual travel insurance policy may be more cost-effective than purchasing individual policies if you're planning to take more than two trips per year, both close to home and overseas, such as a getaway to Canada .

Less time-consuming

Rather than going through the process of purchasing a different policy each time you travel, an annual policy may be able to help you save time overall.

Flexible travel coverage

Some insurers may enable you to access cover for an unlimited number of trips per year up to 90 days each (subject to their other qualification criteria).

Multi-trip policies usually have age restrictions in place which make it more difficult for seniors to purchase them.

May be more expensive for one or two trips

The policy in itself can be more expensive to purchase than a single-trip policy, meaning it may be cheaper to stick to individual policies if you're only planning one or two trips.

Commonly asked annual travel insurance questions

There are providers who can offer cover for a range of COVID-19-related costs , such as cancellation or medical costs. However, whether you're covered will come down to your insurer's terms and conditions regarding the circumstances surrounding your claim (for instance, some may not offer reimbursement if the claimable event occurred within 72 hours of buying your policy), so it's important to compare your options and find out what you can be covered for.

Yes – some providers can offer annual coverage if you’re a frequent passenger on cruise ships. This may be included automatically, but other insurers may require you to purchase this as an optional extra. As is the case with other types of insurance, your coverage (which can include things like medical expenses and evacuation while at sea) is subject to the terms and conditions set in place by your insurer.

There are companies which can offer income cover as part of your travel insurance package. For instance, if you become disabled as a result of an injury while on your travels and are subsequently unable to work due to the ongoing disablement for over 30 successive days, your insurer may be able to provide you with some cover (subject to the nature of the incident and your injury, as well as other qualification criteria). Check with your insurer to help determine what you can be covered for.

There are travel insurance providers which can offer you 24/7 emergency medical assistance if your illness or injury is deemed claimable. Some of the benefits which may be provided as part of their 24/7 emergency support include:

  • Helping you access a medical practitioner if you require emergency treatment
  • Organising medical evacuation or repatriation
  • Return travel to Australia for your dependents if they're without supervision
  • Arranging a translator over the phone (unless required for legal documents)

Most policies come with a cooling-off period of anywhere between 14 and 30 days. However, this depends on who you choose to purchase your insurance through. It’s worth keeping in mind that you won’t be able to cancel your policy if you've already made a claim or if have already departed on your holiday.

Leigh Morgan

Are there COVID-19 restrictions for U.S. tourists?

No. Australia has no COVID-19-related restrictions for American travelers. However, the Australian government does recommend getting the COVID-19 vaccine, wearing masks and practicing good hygiene.

Do I need a visa or passport to travel to Australia?

Yes. You need a valid U.S. passport with at least one blank page for your entry stamp.

Is it safe to visit Australia?

The United States and Australia have a strong diplomatic relationship. Although there’s always some level of risk involved in traveling to a foreign country, Australia is generally safe for Americans. The U.S. Department of State has issued a  Level 1 travel advisory , indicating that you don’t need to take any special safety precautions when visiting the “Land Down Under.”

Australia doesn’t require U.S. tourists to buy travel insurance, but we highly recommend purchasing a comprehensive policy before your trip commences.

Below are some risks you may encounter that would make purchasing travel insurance worthwhile .

Risks with adventure activities

Australia is one of the best places to visit if you love parasailing, paragliding, hot air ballooning, diving and other adventure activities. Unfortunately, these activities are risky, so there’s a chance that you’ll break a bone or sustain some other type of injury.

Travel insurance covers medical expenses and other costs associated with these injuries, ensuring you don’t end up with a huge hospital bill. This type of insurance is especially helpful if you plan to explore the Great Barrier Reef, take an excursion into the Outback or swim near the shoreline of one of Australia’s beautiful beaches.

Risks due to wildlife

Australia is full of dangerous critters, from venomous spiders and snakes to aggressive kangaroos. Depending on where you visit, you may end up encountering an unfriendly Tasmanian devil. U.S. medical insurance typically doesn’t work in Australia, so it’s important to have travel insurance for these unexpected situations. If you’re bitten by a Tasmanian devil or sustain some other wildlife-related injury, travel insurance takes the place of your regular medical insurance.

Risks due to bushfires

Bushfires  have a high heat output and can cause a significant amount of damage in a short amount of time. If you find yourself in Australia during one of these fires, you may have to contend with damage to your rental car or your personal belongings. Comprehensive travel insurance may reimburse you for damaged or destroyed items, or it may reimburse your rental car agency for the cost of repairing or replacing a damaged vehicle.

Risks related to long-distance driving

Australia has many isolated regions that are hundreds of miles from the nearest populated area. You may have to drive several hundred miles to reach your destination, so it’s important to have travel insurance before you set off on an adventure.

Travel insurance covers a wide range of circumstances, including the ones below.

Trip cancellation insurance

It’s never fun to cancel a vacation you’ve been looking forward to for months, but it’s even worse when a cancellation results in significant financial losses. Trip cancellation insurance protects you if you have to cancel your trip to Australia for a covered reason. For example, if one of your travel companions is diagnosed with advanced cancer before your departure date, you can use your insurance to recoup pre-paid, nonrefundable expenses.

If you want to have coverage for any type of circustance, you can purchase cancel for any reason (CFAR) insurance . Typically sold as an add-on, this type of coverage will reimburse you for around 50% to 70% of your total prepaid costs .

Trip delay insurance

To get to Australia, you may have to rely on the services of multiple common carriers. For example, you may have to fly to Australia and then take a ferry to your final destination. Trip delay insurance reimburses you for any expenses you incur as the result of a common carrier delay. If your flight is canceled, for example, your insurer may reimburse you for meals, additional transportation costs and other related expenses.

Trip interruption insurance

Imagine that you arrive in Australia, enjoy a few days of fun and then come down with a severe illness. You’re so sick that you have to return to the United States sooner than expected. Trip interruption insurance reimburses your pre-paid, nonrefundable expenses in this type of scenario. It should also cover the cost of adjusting your travel plans or accessing emergency assistance services.

Travel medical insurance

As noted previously, you probably won’t be able to use your U.S. health insurance in Australia . Therefore, it’s important to have travel medical insurance to cover things like nursing care, hospitalization, blood tests, CT scans and other healthcare services. If you’re injured while snorkeling or suddenly develop appendicitis during your trip, you can rest easy knowing that your medical expenses are covered.

Medical evacuation insurance

If you’re injured in the Outback, you can’t exactly hop in a cab and get to a hospital within a few minutes. Medical evacuation insurance covers the cost of transporting you to a healthcare facility that’s capable of meeting your needs. For example, if you need emergency assistance, your policy may cover the cost of air medical services (like helicopter transportation).

Insurance for personal items

We recommend that you leave your valuables at home, but if you just have to take jewelry, designer clothing or expensive sports equipment on your trip, make sure your travel insurance includes coverage for lost, stolen and damaged items. This type of coverage reimburses you if a common carrier loses or damages your luggage or its contents.

Rental car coverage

Rental car coverage can protect you under the following circumstances:

  • You’re involved in an auto accident caused by someone else.
  • Someone vandalizes your rental vehicle.
  • Someone steals your rental vehicle.

If your policy includes this type of coverage, your insurer will reimburse the rental agency any time you experience a covered loss. For example, if you get into a fender-bender in one of Sydney’s famous traffic jams, your insurance company should reimburse the rental agency for the cost of repairs.

Travel insurance for Australia doesn’t cover the following:

  • Pre-existing conditions: If you’re diagnosed with a medical condition like asthma or diabetes before you buy your travel insurance, your insurer won’t pay for medical expenses associated with that diagnosis. In some cases, however, you can opt for a plan with a waiver. This can ensure coverage for pre-existing conditions during your trip.
  • Illegal activities: Travel insurance doesn’t cover expenses arising from any illegal activities, such as injuries that occur while under the influence of illicit substances.
  • Fear of travel: If you book a trip and then suddenly develop a fear of flying, your insurance company won’t reimburse you for your pre-paid expenses. The same applies to a fear of seeing a spider or encountering a Tasmanian devil during your trip.
  • Expected events: Travel insurance doesn’t cover expenses associated with events that you knew about (or should have known about) before a trip. For example, if you book a trip and buy insurance after a named storm has started developing, your insurer won’t reimburse you if the storm forces you to cancel or interrupt your trip.

For a trip to Australia, we found that the cost of travel insurance ranges from less than $1 per day to around $11 per day depending on the type of coverage.

To give you a better idea, we requested multiple quotes from leading travel insurance providers.

These quotes are based on the following criteria:

  • Age: 35 years old
  • Destination: Australia
  • Trip Length: 7 days
  • Trip cost: $2,000

You can see our quotes for basic travel insurance in the following table. The cheapest travel insurance plan costs just under $1 per day .

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

The plans in this next table are more comprehensive. In addition to medical and medical evacuation coverage, they also include trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage. According to our quotes, these plans cost between $7 and $11 per day .

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Your costs won’t be exactly the same, as insurance companies base their premiums on these factors:

  • Trip cost: Insurance companies reimburse you for up to 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses. The more your trip costs, the more your insurance provider has to pay you if you experience a covered loss. Therefore, the cost of your insurance plan depends on the cost of your trip.
  • Age: Older people are more likely to develop serious medical problems while traveling, so it costs more to insure a 60-year-old or 70-year-old traveler than it does to insure someone in their 20s.
  • Insurance benefits: Some travel insurance plans come with more benefits than others. For example, a plan that offers $1 million in medical evacuation coverage will cost more than a plan that comes with only $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage.
  • Destination: Some destinations are riskier than others, so insurance companies charge different rates based on your itinerary.
  • Add-on coverage: You may need to purchase add-on coverage, such as insurance for adventure activities. If so, you’ll pay an additional premium for the extra benefits.

To find the best travel insurance for your needs, follow these tips:

Consider how you’re getting to and around Australia.

You’ll have to take an airplane from the United States to Australia, but depending on your plans, you may also need to ride a train or take a ferry at some point. The more carriers you use, the more likely you are to experience delays and other problems, increasing the amount of coverage needed.

Think carefully about what you plan to do.

If you want to visit the Sydney Opera House and check out the Australian Museum, you won’t need as much coverage as someone who plans to camp in the Outback or go parasailing over the Gold Coast. You may also want to limit your cancellation costs by purchasing cancel-for-any-reason coverage.

Time your purchase carefully.

Although you can buy Overseas Visitors Cover when you arrive, it’s typically cheaper to purchase travel insurance well in advance of your trip.

What travel insurance do I need to travel to Australia?

You’re not required to purchase travel insurance for Australia, but we highly recommend that you do. You never know when you’re going to have an emergency or encounter some kind of problem during a trip. To find the right policy to suit your needs, try using an online comparison tool .

Does American health insurance work in Australia?

In most cases, no. Medicare and Medicaid only work in the United States, and most private health insurance companies will only cover expenses if you use U.S. medical facilities.

Can foreigners buy travel insurance in Australia?

When you travel to Australia, you have the option of buying Overseas Visitors Cover. However, not many companies provide this type of coverage. There may also be waiting periods for medical coverage. Therefore, we recommend that you buy travel insurance before you leave the United States.

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

If you’re a frequent traveller, a Medibank Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance could save you time and money. Customise your policy to where you’re travelling along with selecting your maximum trip length to secure 12 months of travel cover.¹

Wanaka stand up paddle boarding

What is Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance gives you the option to travel multiple times a year under the same policy.

With Medibank Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, you can have comprehensive cover for your trips, year-round. Select the cover that will encompass all your trips for the 12-month period, and a duration limit to get a quote for your policy. It’s important to remember that your cover will be limited to the area 2  you select within the quote tool as well as the maximum trip duration selected . 1

What does Medibank Multi-Trip Travel Insurance offer?

Depending on your policy, it can provide cover for any number of trips for the entire year, international and domestic within your maximum trip duration limit.

How to build your Annual Multi-Trip Insurance quote

Step 1: Select your area of travel.  Where you travel will influence your premium. Countries are grouped into ‘ areas ’, based on the cost associated with claims there. You'll need to select your travel region or country taking into consideration the 20% rule detailed  below .

Step 2: Click on the Annual Multi-Trip option and select your excess.   At the top of the plan option page, there will be an option to navigate to the Annual Multi-Trip cover, click on this and select your Annual Multi-Trip.  If you're purchasing a domestic policy, your excess amount is automatically set to be $50. If you're purchasing an international Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) Policy then you'll need to select from $0, $100, $250 excess options.

Step 3: Choose your maximum trip duration.  You will have insurance for an unlimited number of trips up to the trip duration you select during the quote flow. For example, if you choose a maximum trip duration of 30 days, this means you can take as many trips as you want (within your area of insurance), provided each trip is no longer than 30 days.

For a domestic AMT you can select a 15, 30 or 45 day maximum trip duration.

For international AMT you can select a 30, 45 or 60 day maximum trip duration.

Step 4: Select any additional cover you may require.  For an additional premium, you can choose to add cover for additional scenarios like snow sports, moped riding and multi-night cruises on the sea or ocean. If you're travelling with valuables, you can also opt to increase your luggage and personal effects. Details can be found  below , or within our PDS .

Step 5: Enter the traveller information.  Fill in the traveller information. This is what will appear on your certificate of insurance.

Please note: If you/a traveller has an Existing Medical Condition which is not automatically included within the policy, you/they can complete an online assessment form to tell us of your/their condition. If your/their condition is approved by us, then you can decide to buy the cover for your existing medical condition. An additional premium may apply.

Step 6: Pay for your cover.  Select your preferred payment method. Once you've paid, you will be sent your Certificate of Insurance. Your 12-months of travel cover will start from the date you selected as your departure date on the quote tool, not the date you purchased your cover.

Travelling to the Americas or Africa?

If you’ll be spending  20% or more of any trip  within the year in the Americas or Africa,  you must select  ‘Anywhere in the world’ or ‘worldwide including the Americas or Africa,’ or select a country of the Americas or Africa.

yearly travel insurance australia

How to choose your area of travel?

It's important to choose the right destination for your trip when quoting. What you select as your travel destination will not only impact your premium, but also what other countries you'll have cover for under your Annual Multi-Trip.

Destinations are included for areas that are below the one selected, for instance, domestic travel is covered if a country/region in Area 3 is selected, while travel within Europe and Asia are included if a country/region within Area 1 is selected. Note: The 20% rule applies for the Americas/Africa as detailed  above .

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why consider multi-trip travel insurance.

Multi-Trip Travel Insurance can be a convenient and cost-effective option if you're planning to travel multiple times within a 12-month period.

  • It can save you time and help take away the stress of having to purchase a new travel insurance policy each time you travel.
  • It might also be more affordable than purchasing multiple Single Trip insurance policies throughout the year.

You'll be able to take an unlimited number of trips provided you're travelling within your selected area of insurance 2  and each trip is not longer than the maximum trip duration 1  you've selected. So, whilst an Annual Multi-Trip policy provides 12 months of cover, it's important to understand that this does not mean you can holiday for 12 months straight. If you are looking to holiday for 365 continuous days, then a Medibank Single Trip Travel Insurance policy could be right for you.

What is the difference between Medical Only, Comprehensive and Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

Multi-Trip Insurance:  Annual Multi-Trip policies (AMT) are designed to provide comprehensive travel insurance for multiple trips taken within a 12 month period (noting that each individual trip taken must not exceed the maximum trip duration 1  as shown on the Certificate of Insurance). Medibank Travel Insurance offers an AMT option on the International Comprehensive Plan and on the Domestic Plan.

Single Trip Insurance:  A single trip insurance policy will mean that you will have cover for a single trip taken within the dates listed on the Certificate of Insurance. Medibank Travel Insurance offers single trip insurance on the International Medical Only Plan, the International Comprehensive Plan and the Domestic Plan.

What's the difference between our travel insurance plans?

  • Medical Only:  An International Medical Only Plan provides cover for overseas medical and hospital expenses 3  that occur whilst travelling. It will not provide cover for things like trip cancellation or lost luggage. Medical only cover is not available on domestic travel and can only be purchased as single trip insurance.
  • International Comprehensive:  A Medibank International Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plan provides more complete cover during your trip. It can provide cover for overseas medical and dental emergencies, 3  plus inclusions for unforeseen cancellations 6 , lost/stolen valuables 7  and more. An International Comprehensive Plan can be purchased as either a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.
  • Domestic:  A Medibank Domestic Travel Insurance Plan is designed to help protect trips within Australia. It includes cover for cancellation, amendment & delays 6 , cover for lost, stolen & damaged personal effects 7  and more. Domestic travel insurance does not include any cover for medical expenses incurred whilst travelling. A Domestic Plan can be purchased as either a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.

To understand more about the different Medibank Travel Insurance options, please visit our  compare travel insurance page  or refer to the  Combined FSG/PDS .

Does Medibank Travel Insurance include cover for COVID-19 related events?

Medibank provide cover for certain COVID-19 related scenarios, including overseas medical costs if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner while travelling. For more information on COVID-19 cover, you can visit our  COVID-19 benefits page.

How much does Multi-Trip Travel Insurance cost?

The cost of Multi-Trip Travel Insurance varies dependent on a number of factors. This can include where you are travelling to, any additional cover options that you select, if there are others on your policy, your age and any pre-existing medical conditions. Use the quote tool to find out the cost of Multi-Trip Travel Insurance.

Is Multi-Trip Travel Insurance available for seniors?

Yes. Our intention is to cover as many people as possible. However, policy prices my increase in line with your age, and if you are 70 years of age or over, the availability of the plans may vary depending on other relevant factors such as the destination, trip duration and whether the policy is a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.

Am I covered for travel within Australia with Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

You will be covered for domestic travel that is 250km or more from home, or, if less than that, your trip must include at least one-night paid accommodation booked with an accommodation supplier or provider.

Remember when selecting the zone for your policy coverage, you must choose the area which will cover all of your trips for the year. 2  Your Annual Multi-Trip Policy will provide cover for every trip in the same ‘area’, as listed above . Please note that the 20% rule will apply.

What do I list as my destination if I am unsure where I will be travelling throughout the year?

If you are unsure of where you're travelling, you can always enter 'Anywhere in the world' when quoting. This will help ensure you have cover for any destinations you choose (so long as travel sanctions aren't in effect). This does however mean that your Annual Multi-Trip policy may have a higher premium as it takes into account the fact you could travel anywhere in the world.

Alternatively you can select the area you think you'll be travelling to and if you need to increase your area of cover at a later date, then you can contact us to discuss re-issuing your policy.

How many trips can I take on my Annual Multi-Trip Policy?

There is no limit on the number of journeys you can take in the 12-month period, provided you are at least 250 kilometres from your home – or, if your trip includes at least one or more nights of paid accommodation with an accommodation supplier or provider. These trips must take place in the area you have selected, or in the included areas as part of your policy.

You must also ensure that each trip is not longer than the maximum trip duration you select when finalising your plan. 1

How long can each of my trips be if I’m covered by an Annual Multi-Trip Policy?

On Annual Multi-Trip Travel insurance policies, you can choose a maximum trip duration of 30, 45 or 60 days for international plans, and 15 or 30 days for domestic plans. This means each separate trip you take using the policy cannot exceed the duration selected.

Things you should know

1  Cover is limited to a maximum duration of up to 30, 45 or 60 days for international trips or 15 or 30 days on domestic trips depending on the duration choice you make.

2  If 20% or more of any Journey will be spent in the Americas or Africa You must nominate the area including these countries as the area of travel. This applies to Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip polices.

3  Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from the onset of the illness or injury. Medical evacuation cover subject to claim approval.

4  Limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions apply. For full details on exactly what’s covered by our COVID-19 travel insurance benefits see the  Combined FSG/PDS .

5  Limits apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

6  Conditions apply to cancellation cover. Sub-limits apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

7  Item limits apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

8  Maximum liability collectively for sections Loss of Income, Personal Liability and Accidental Death is $10,000 on the Domestic Plan and $25,000 on the International Comprehensive Plan.

9  You must take out an International Plan and add Cruise Cover if you’re travelling on a domestic or international multi-night sea or ocean cruise to have any cover for the benefits under the policy. Unless your cruise is entirely within Australia (e.g. a Kimberley Cruise which falls entirely within Australian coastal waters) in which case a Comprehensive Domestic plan may be purchased and no cruise cover variation is required.

10  Conditions and exclusions apply. See the  Combined FSG/PDS  for more information.

Important: If selecting “Anywhere in the world”, your policy will not provide cover for claims arising in countries that are subject to sanctions. Your safety is paramount, so please read and familiarise yourself with the “ Standing Travel Alert for High Risk and Sanctioned Countries ” when undertaking worldwide travel – and before making any side trips to neighbouring countries – to ensure you have adequate cover.

Going on a cruise? If your cruise is in inland Australia (e.g. on the Murray River) or in Australian coastal water (e.g. the Kimberley), enter or select “Australia”. If your cruise embarks and disembarks from Australia ports only without any stopover at a port outside of Australia (e.g. a “Sampler Cruise” or cruise from Sydney to Brisbane), enter or select “Domestic Cruise”. Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.

If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.

We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.

Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.

Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.

The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.

The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.

If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.

It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:

  • You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.

You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.

Our Pick Of The Best Boat Insurance For Australians

Published: Apr 18, 2024, 8:17pm

It may not come as a surprise that Australians love taking boats out on the water as 87% of the population live within 50km of the coast. Data from the Boating Industry Association for 2022/23 shows that 2.5 million Australians have a boat licence—that’s almost 10% of the population.

As a boat is a considerable investment, it’s a good idea to protect it as you would your car. Boat insurance can offer similar benefits to car insurance , such as cover for damage to the boat itself and its contents, and legal liability, if you damage someone else’s property, or someone is injured or dies as a result of an accident you’ve caused.

However, it additionally offers more boat-specific cover, paying out for environmental damage caused by an oil, fuel or waste leakage, for example. Many policies also offer cover for sailboat racing and waterskiing, typically as an optional extra and for an additional premium.

As all policies differ in their features, it’s essential to compare them to find what you need for a suitable price. You should first decide, if you need third-party only; third party, fire and theft; or comprehensive cover which protects against the widest range of eventualities. We’ve conducted extensive research into the latter, to find what we consider to be the best comprehensive policies. Nautilus Marine Boat Insurance

Agreed or market value

  • Choice of repairer

Liability cover

Limit not readily disclosed

This offering is the most comprehensive we found, covering your boat up to 250 nautical miles from the Australian coastline. Unlike most boat insurance policies, there’s the option to have your boat insured at market or agreed value.

There’s $5,000 each for emergency expenses and funeral costs, $20,000 for personal effects, $500,000 for marine damage, and $50,000 for related fines and penalties. This policy also allows you, rather than the insurer, to choose a repairer for your boat if damaged. Additionally, you have a choice of how much you pay in excess on accepted claims, which can lower or raise the policy premium, to a more favourable level. This policy is also a rare one in that it automatically covers sailboat racing, limiting the distance to up to 100 nautical miles. Additional cover can be purchased for longer races. Note that while this policy offers legal liability cover, the limit is not disclosed.

Aside from comprehensive cover, this insurer also offers third party only, extended blue water yacht racing and blue water cruising policies.

  • Lay-up discount available
  • 21-day cooling off period
  • Insures at market value or agreed value
  • No rescue cover
  • No salvage cover
  • Cover for ‘reasonable’ repairs at market value only

GIO Boat Insurance

$10 million

As is common with boat insurance, this policy covers you up to 200 nautical miles off Australia’s shores. However, it offers up to $10 million in salvage and removal cover, which is relatively high compared to policies provided by other insurers.

It also includes $250,000 to cover the cost of removing or containing damage caused by pollution from your boat and related legal costs, if your boat is stranded or damaged. There’s $5,000 each for emergency repair, the boat’s contents and fatal injury. Unlike certain policies, this one also covers rescue, paying out up to $5,000. However, one drawback is that your boat can only be insured at agreed value. A lay-up discount and cover for sailboat racing and watersports are optional extras that can be added.

If you make a successful claim, the policy allows you to choose the repairer. You can also pay an excess amount that you choose on taking out the policy. Paying a low amount in excess typically raises the policy premium and vice versa.

This insurer also offers third-party boat insurance as an alternative to comprehensive cover.

  • $10 million legal liability
  • Rescue cover included
  • Insures at agreed value only

RACV Boat Insurance

This policy pays out up to $5,000 for emergency expenses, and covers damage up to the agreed value, as long as your boat stays within 200 nautical miles of Australia’s coastline.

It also covers rescue up to $5,000 and salvage costs, as long as they are ‘reasonable’, while $250,000 is available for clean-up expenses to remove, contain or clear debris and liquid from your boat as a result of an insured event. For funeral expenses, there’s $10,000, while $10 million is provided in legal liability cover. However, content cover is only available to bolt on to the policy as an optional extra. Insurance for sailboat racing and watersports are also available as add-ons, for an extra premium.

Unlike certain policies, you can choose a repairer, which is an added bonus. You also have a choice of how much excess you pay on each accepted claim. Note that this comprehensive offering is the only type of boat cover this insurer offers.

  • $250,000 clean-up costs
  • Covers ‘reasonable’ salvage costs only
  • Contents cover not automatically included

Suncorp Boat Insurance

Suncorp’s comprehensive boat insurance offers a suite of attractive features: there’s $10 million in salvage and removal cover; an equal amount in legal liability cover; $250,000 for pollution by oil, fuel or waste; and $5,000 each for emergency expenses, the boat’s contents, and for fatal injury.

The policy will remain valid up to 200 nautical miles from Australia’s shores, covering your boat at agreed value only and paying out up to this value for rescue. Note that if the boat is damaged, only the insurer can choose a repairer. However, you will have a choice of how much excess you pay on accepted claims, when you first take out the policy. Paying more in excess can lower your policy premium and vice versa.

Cover for sailboat racing and water-skiing can be added on to the policy at an extra cost. This insurer offers third party cover, as an alternative to comprehensive cover.

  • No choice of repairer

NRMA Boat Insurance

This policy will cover your boat up to 200 nautical miles from Australia’s coastline, covering ‘reasonable’ repair costs up to an agreed value only. However, it allows you to choose a repairer, if you wish, and offers several excess options to choose from when taking out the policy. Opting to pay a higher excess on accepted claims can lower the policy premium and vice versa.

The policy also includes salvage cover, though no specific limit is readily provided, and $10 million in legal liability cover, including $250,000 for clean-up costs. It also offers $10,000 for funeral costs, up to $800 for emergency repairs and an additional $1,000 to cover emergency transport and accomodation. There’s $1,000 to cover the boat’s contents, which is relatively low compared to other insurers, but there is the option to increase this amount to $1,500 by paying an additional premium.

This policy does not cover rescue, but insurance for sailboat racing and water-skiing are available at an additional cost. This insurer also provides third party insurance as an alternative to its comprehensive offering.

  • 21-day cooling period
  • $800 only for emergency repairs

Apia Boat Insurance

In addition to $5,000 in cover for rescue, Apia’s comprehensive boat insurance includes $10 million each for salvage and legal liability. It also offers $250,000 for clean up and $5,000 for emergency expenses.

For fatal injury, there’s $5,000, while up to $250 is provided for the boat’s contents and $250 for personal effects. Cover for sailboats and watersports come as optional extras, at an additional cost. Cover remains valid up to 200 miles from the Australian mainland and Tasmanian coastlines.

The policy offers several excess amounts to choose from, allowing you the ability to lower your policy premium, if you prefer to pay more in excess, and vice versa. Note that the insurer will choose a repairer for you on this policy. As an alternative to comprehensive cover, it also offers third party insurance.

  • $10 million salvage
  • Insured at agreed value only
  • No lay-up discount

Youi Comprehensive Boat Insurance

Youi Comprehensive Boat Insurance covers you up to 200 nautical miles from the Australian and Tasmanian coastlines, providing $1,000 for emergency repairs, transport and accomodation. However, it insures at market value only and you can’t choose the repairer if you’re boat is damaged.

There’s $1,000 for the boat’s contents, $10 million for legal liability and $5,000 for accidental personal injury. The latter rises to $10,000, including for funeral expenses, if injury leads to death. The policy also includes $150,000 for salvage costs and $250,000 in pollution cover. Note that the policy does not include cover for rescue, and offers a 20-day cooling off period, which is slightly shorter than the 21-day period offered by many insurers. Social sailboat racing cover is available as an optional extra for an additional premium, but water-skiing cover is not provided.

As well as comprehensive cover, Youi offers a third party property only policy, and third party fire and theft insurance. It also provides a choice of excess amounts, allowing you to raise how much is levied in exchange for a lower policy premium, or vice versa.

  • $10 million legal liability cover
  • Insurer offers good range of policy types
  • $10,000 accidental injury cover
  • Market value only
  • Water-skiing cover not available

Club Marine Boat Insurance

While pleasure boat insurance is Club Marine’s most comprehensive offering, it also provides third party cover. The former, which we analysed, can cover your boat at market or agreed value, up to 250 nautical miles from Australia, protecting it against damage costs up to the policy limit. You, rather than the insurer, can choose a repairer when needed.

The policy also includes $10,000 for personal effects, $500,000 to cover clean up costs, and covers ‘reasonable’ costs for salvage. Insurance for water-skiing and sailboat racing can be bolted on to the policy at an additional cost. You can also add cover for emergency measures if you choose, but such scenarios are only covered up to a ‘reasonable’ amount. There is no automatic or optional cover for rescue.

You can choose from a number of excess options when taking out the policy, which allows you to raise the excess to lower the policy premium or vice versa, depending on your preference.

  • 14-day cooling period
  • Lay-up discount optional

To find our pick of the best comprehensive caravan insurers in Australia, Forbes Advisor analysed 14 of the most popular companies in the country.

Our analysis included comparing how a boat is insured (whether by market value or agreed value); policy benefits, such as cover for emergency expenses and accidental damage; and an in-depth review of each provider’s product disclosure statement (PDS) to evaluate any exclusions and extras.

The policies were compared across the following 16 key data points:

Market versus agreed value: Can owners choose how their boat is insured? Choice of repairer: Can boat owners choose the repairer? Choice of excess: Do boat owners have a choice of how much excess they pay? Note that paying a high amount in excess usually lowers the policy premium, and vice versa. Cooling-off period: What is the cooling off period for purchase? Emergency expenses: Are boat owners covered for emergency expenses and by up to how much? Above $1,000 is great. Fire and theft: Does the policy include fire and theft cover? Legal liability: As boating and its equipment is expensive, is there at least $10 million for damage a boat owner may accidentally cause with their boat? Contents cover: Are the contents of the boat covered by more than $4,000? Natural disasters: Is there cover for floods and storms? Funeral services: Is there at least $10,000 or more for funeral expenses? Salvage costs: Is there at least $10 million for salvage operations? Clean-up costs: is there at least $250,000 for clean-up costs? Rescue services: Is there at least $5,000 for rescue services? Water-skiing: Is there cover for water-skiing automatically or as a policy add-on? Sailboat racing: Is there cover for sailboat racing automatically or is there an add-on? Discounts for ‘lay-up’: Does the insurer offer lay-up cover to allow owners to save on their premium when the boat is stored?

These variables were compared to complete an overall ranking of each comprehensive boat insurance provider. Each provider was ranked between one and five, with the leading providers (being those ranked higher than 3.5) included in the above best-of list.

A Note on Star Rankings

You will note that we have included a star rating next to each product or provider. This rating was determined by the editorial team once all of the data points above were considered, and the pros and cons of each product attribute was reviewed. The star rating is solely the view of Forbes Advisor editorial staff. Commercial partners or advertisers have no bearing on the star rating or their inclusion on this list. Star ratings are only one factor to be considered, and Forbes Advisor encourages you to seek independent advice from an authorised financial adviser in relation to your own financial circumstances and investments before you decide to choose a particular financial product or service.

As the name suggests, cover for boats can protect you when using a vessel such as a motorboat, yacht, small craft or super yacht. An insurer will be able to tell you what type of vessels it specifically covers. Similar to car insurance, the following types of boat cover are available:

Third party only: Protects against claims of injury or death, or damage to property by passengers or other third parties. Third party, fire and theft: Covers everything a third party only policy does, as well as someone stealing your boat and damage caused by fire. Comprehensive: Covers the widest range of unexpected emergencies, including those caused by theft, accidents and natural disasters.

The benefits of boat insurance can differ between policies. However, you’ll find that most comprehensive policies tend to include cover for the following:

Accidental loss and damage: This can include cover for theft, impact, sinking, fire, a storm, malicious damage and transit damage, when your boat is being transported on its own trailer

Emergency expenses: Covers the cost of emergency assistance such as the towing of your boat to the nearest safe place, or for the delivery of fuel, if your boat is stranded due to an emergency or unforeseen incident. It can also cover urgent repairs.

Personal effects/contents: Insures you for theft, loss or damage of belongings owned by you and depending on the insurer, your passengers, which are being used or stored on your boat at the time of an incident. This can include clothing, fishing and diving equipment and unfixed furniture. There are typically exclusions to this cover such as jewellery, money and mobile phones. Sub-limits on cover may also apply to certain items. Clean-up: Covers the cost to remove, contain or clear waste and pollution caused by your boat. Salvage and removal: Covers the cost of recovering your boat and moving it to a safe place in the event your boat is stranded or damaged in a covered incident. Legal liability: Covers you for injury to other people or damage to someone’s property when using your boat. Funeral expenses: Pays out following the accidental death of an insured person on the policy while boating.

A policy may also include cover for rescuing from a stranded boat, while insurance for sailboat racing and waterskiing may each come as optional extras that you can bolt on to your policy at an additional cost.

In addition to the types of cover included on a policy, you’ll also want to find out how far you can take your boat from land. Typically, you can travel 200 nautical miles away from Australia’s coastline without invalidating your policy. Certain insurers may allow you to travel farther out. You may also want to check if you can choose the repairer if you claim for damage, or if the insurer must choose.

Certain policies may offer a lay-up discount, often as an optional extra. This is when you can nominate certain months in the year that you don’t use your boat, and the insurer will charge you less for your policy during these times. This discount is worth considering, in addition to the policy premium (the cost of the policy). You’ll also want to weigh these factors up against the excess you’re typically required to pay on each accepted claim. This sum is usually automatically deducted from the claim amount. On taking out your policy you may have the option to choose an excess amount. While lowering it can usually raise your policy premium, paying more in excess could lower your policy premium to an amount that you may prefer.

Most insurers offer either agreed value or market value policies. However, some insurers may offer the option to insure at agreed value or market value, depending on your preference, although this is rare.

On an agreed value policy, the value is determined through a boat valuation you arrange before the policy starts. This must usually be carried out by a registered boat dealer or broker who specialises in your type of boat.

On a market value policy, the value of your boat will be determined at the time of claiming, typically using dealer or repairer valuations or industry publications.

You’ll want to read a policy’s PDS thoroughly before deciding whether it’s worth purchasing. This should be available to view on the insurer’s website. It will detail what the cover includes and excludes, as this differs between policies.

Insurers usually offer a 21-day cooling-off period during which you can cancel your policy and get a refund, should you change your mind and haven’t yet made a claim.

Certain policies may come with a shorter cooling off period of 20, or even 14 days. As with all the details of your policy, you can check how long this period will last in its PDS.

A quick way to compare boat insurance policies is to run quotes on the websites of individual insurers. Shopping around will raise your chances of finding a suitable policy, at the best price available.

As well as the cost of a policy, you will be able to compare factors, such as the types of cover included, cover levels and the amount of excess levied on each successful claim you make.

First, you’ll need to enter a few details into the insurer’s online quotation tool to give it an idea of the type of boat that needs covering, how you use it, its speed and engine type, where you store it when not using it and more. An insurer will also want to know information about you, such as your age, and boating experience.

Data Research: Mia Dunn

How much boat insurance do I need?

The amount of cover you will need will depend on factors such as the value of your boat and the contents inside, whether it will be insured at agreed or market value.

You’ll want to carefully look through a policy’s PDS to find out exactly what it does and does not cover. You may want to consider a different policy if it automatically includes cover you don’t need such as water skiing insurance.

What is the best boat insurance policy?

Our above ranking of what we consider to be the best comprehensive boat insurance policies gives you an idea of how they compare based on what we’ve identified as key factors.

In addition to the levels of cover available, we considered whether owners can choose the repairer that fixes their boat, whether they have a choice of what they pay in excess, how long of a cooling off period is provided, should they wish to cancel their policy and get a refund and more.

However, the best boat insurance for you will ultimately come down to your personal preferences, budget and needs.

How much is boat insurance in Australia?

According to the Pacific Boating club, insuring your vessel can cost upwards of $300 per year.

The specific price will be based on factors such as the size and make of your boat, as well as the type of policy you choose.
