Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. BUT the tour was great!

Maldive Dhoni Cruise Tour

Maldive Dhoni Cruise

It was my first time travelling with Explore. All I can say, it was absolutely flawless. Food was amazing, good variety, vegetarian options. Boat crew were always helpful and very pleasant. Our guide (Hi) simply a star. He was taking a good care about us, making sure, we have unforgettable holidays experience. He made many pictures and go pro videos, which he then shared with us. The itinerary was great. We had many opportunities to snorkel. Some coral reefs were simply so beautiful with plenty of fish, we visited shipwreck and even had an opportunity to swim with nurse sharks. Unforgettable experience for sure! :-) What I found outstanding was, how the boat crew prepared our bbq banquet dinner table at the beach, even creating manta ray from the sand in front of the sand table. Equally, I was amazed by the decorations our 'Kethi captain' made for our last dinner table. He created fish, birds from the leaf's, carved small boats to hold the napkins and coconut lamp. It was just so so nice. :-) Would I come again? Definitely yes. Would I recommend to other travelers? Definitely yes. Only one thing I would point out. I would suggest clients with mobility issues discuss this tour first with the tour provider. They may have problems moving around the boat, getting on/off dinghy and may not be able to participate in snorkeling, which is a shame. ;-)

Beachlife is the best way to travel to Maldives! It's not only super affordable but gives you the best ocean experience for your money! We did the week long tour (stayed in Maafushi and Fulidhoo) and saw everything imaginable. Atif (our guide) is super knowledgeable in everything Maldives and knows the best spots/places to take you for snorkeling and picture taking. The accommodations are average. Nothing fancy but you're there for the ocean and beach life, not to sit in your hotel. The food is very authentic. You'll get the full Maldivian cuisine.

Quite an amazing adventure on Maldives made possible with care of the ecosystems and support to the Maldivian people. My guide, Archie/Muhamed was the best guide anyone could ever have in seeing and enjoying the beauty of Maldives. His connections with Maldivian people made my trip comfortable, convenient and an adventure to treasure. Would love to do it again with my family! Thank you so much Archie and Ruth!!

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

Yerevan is a fascinating capital city. It’s full of ancient history, delicious food and is an eclectic mix of modern culture and old traditions.

But the best part about visiting this city is that most of Armenia’s famous sites are just a day trip away. It’s the perfect place to base yourself to explore – especially if you are on a budget.

Here are the best day trips from Yerevan!

Table of Contents

How to get from Yerevan to Lake Sevan:

How to get to khor virap from yerevan:, how to get to garni monastery from yerevan:, how to get to geghard monastery from yerevan:, how to get to dilijan from yerevan:, to get to noravank monastery from yerevan:, how to get to tatev monastery from yerevan:, how to get to byuregavan from yerevan:, 1. lake sevan.

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

Surrounded by the snow-capped mountains in the distance, Lake Sevan stretches out for as far as the eye can see. It’s the largest body of water in Armenia and is home to one of the most scenic monasteries in the country.

It’s the perfect Yerevan day trip for nature lovers and beach bums.

On the tip of the peninsula stands Sevanavank Monastery. Founded in 874 AD by Princess Mariam, the church isn’t the biggest or most impressive you’ll ever see, but the breathtaking landscape that will more than makes up for it.

Don’t miss exploring the various trails leading from the church, the lake’s many beaches or the market.

Instead of joining one of the expensive Yerevan day tours, you can save a lot of money by using the local Marshrutkas to get around Armenia.

  • Head to the Northern Bus Station.
  • Buses leave every day from 9:00 to 18:00.
  • A one-way ticket costs AMD 600 (R 17.00)
  • Journey time is one hour and the distance from Yerevan to Lake Sevan is 70 km.

Make sure you tell the driver you want to go to Lake Sevan. He will charge you a little bit extra to drop you off, but it will save you the hassle of having to get another bus or a taxi once in Sevan.

Coming back to Yerevan, you will need to catch a taxi from the lake to the Sevan bus stop. The taxi drivers here will try to drive up the price, so prepare to barter hard.

Or if you don’t mind the exercise, you could always walk back to town.

2. Khor Virap

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

If you’re looking for the best view of Mount Ararat, make one of your day trips from Yerevan to Khor Virap. It’s one of the best places to visit in Armenia and an important historical site.

Gregory the Illuminator was held in a pit here for 14 years before he cured King Trdat III of a disease. The King then converted to Christianity, and soon after, Armenia became the world’s first Christian nation.

Today, it’s the most visited pilgrimage site in the country.

But even if you aren’t religious or into ancient architecture, the views alone are worth the visit.

  • Go to Sansuntsi Davit Bus Station. If you’re staying close to the city centre, it’s easily accessible via the metro.
  • Marshrutkas leave the station at 9:00; 11:00 and 14:00 every day.
  • Tickets cost AMD 400 (R 11.00) one-way.
  • Travel time is one hour.

Be sure to tell the driver you are going to the monastery. He will drop you off on the side of the road, and you’ll need to walk a short distance to get to the entrance.

On the way back, if there are no marshrutkas you can hitchhike or take a taxi to the nearby highway to get a bus to Yerevan from there.

3. Garni Temple

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

Garni is home to a 76 AD temple built by King Trdat I. It’s set on the edge of a gorge overlooking the Azat River, and it attracts hundreds of visitors each year.

For history buffs, it’s one of the best day trips from Yerevan. There are ruins of a Roman-era bathhouse, a 7th-century church and Urartian cuneiform inscriptions dating back to the 8th century BC.

Entrance to the site costs AMD 1,000 (R28.00), or you can pay extra and get a guided tour for AMD 2,500 (R70.00).

  • Catch a marshrutka at the Masiv Market bus station.
  • The buses run every day from 10:00 to 20:30 but only depart when full.
  • A single trip costs AMD 300 (R 9.00.
  • Once you’re in town, hail a cab or walk to the temple.
  • Journey time is around 50 minutes.

4. Geghard Monastery

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

Geghard Monastery is a World Heritage Site carved out of the rock face at the Azat River Gorge. Built in the 13th century, it’s the most accessible monastery from Yerevan and makes for a fascinating day trip.

While its architecture is impressive alone, the monastery’s relics have made it famous.

Geghard used to be the home of the spear that wounded Christ on the Cross.  While this important artefact is now missing, the lore of it makes it one of Armenia’s most popular sites.

Don’t forget to keep a lookout for the monastic cells built by the monks inside caves. And if you’re superstitious, tie a strip of cloth to a nearby tree to make a wish a come true.

  • Go to the Masiv Market bus station and catch the marshrutka heading to Goght.
  • Bus leave from 10:00 to 20:30 every day.
  • A single trip costs AMD 300 (R 9.00).

Once in Goght, you’ll need to hail a cab to drive you to the monastery. Or if you want to save money you can walk the 4 km to Geghard

It’s possible to see Garni and Geghard’s monasteries on the same day as they are both only a couple of kilometres from Goght.

5. Dilijan National Park

Photo: Flickr

Dilijan is the Armenian Switzerland. It’s surrounded by dense forests, beautiful mountains and a national park famous for its medicinal mineral water springs.

Inside the park, you’ll find important Armenian cultural sites like the Haghartsin Monastery , Goshavank Monastery , Jukhtak Vank and the Akhnabat church .

Dilijan National Park is a bird watcher’s paradise and one of the best day trips from Yerevan for travellers who want to go for a hike. Plus it’s home to some of Armenia’s largest animals like the Caucasian Brown Bear and the endangered Caucasian Lynx .

It’s one of the top day trips from Yerevan for anyone looking for an excuse to escape the city for a few hours.

  • Take a marshrutka from the Northern Bus Station.
  • Buses run every day from 9:00 to 18:00.
  • A single trip costs AMD 1,500 (R 42.00)
  • Journey time is 1 hr 30 minutes

You’ll want to leave on the first bus, so you have enough time to explore as marshrutka’s heading back to Yerevan stop at 16:00.

6. Noravank Monastery

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

Set amongst towering red cliffs in a remote spot off the Yerevan-Goris highway, lies one of its most beautiful monasteries.

Founded in 1205, it served as a residence for bishops and princes and even survived a raid by the Mongols .

The best time to visit the monastery is early in the morning before the busloads of tourists arrive. Not only will you be able to capture the remoteness of the place, but you’ll have a chance to soak up its serenity.

For those wanting to learn more about Noravank’s history, there is also a small museum that houses medieval artefacts and artworks.

  • Catch a marshrutka from the Arshakunyats Bus Station heading to Yeghednadzor.
  • Buses run from 8:00 to 19:00 every day.
  • Tickets cost AMD 1,000 (R 28.00) one way.
  • Journey time is just under 2 hours.

Tell the driver where you are going, and you’ll be dropped off outside Edem Restaurant. From here, you can either catch a taxi, hitchhike or walk the 6 km to the monastery.

7. Tatev Monastery

If you want to get off the beaten track, plan a day trip to Tatev Monastery. It lies in the far south of Armenia, close to its border with Iran .

The monastery is on top of a cliff overlooking the Vorotan gorge below. It was built in the 9th century and is known for its beautiful, yet eerie ambience.

To reach Tatev Monastery, you’ll need to take a trip with the Wings of Tatev. It’s the longest cableway in the world, giving travellers incredible panoramic views of the landscape below.

Tickets cost AMD 5,000 (R 138.00), but the good news is that there is more to see than just the monastery making the price more than worth it.

The only downside about visiting this part of Armenia is that the journey here can take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.

If you want to include Tatev Monastery as one of your day trips from Yerevan, you’ll need to  hire a car .

Otherwise, you can take a marshrutka to Goris. There is only one per day, it costs AMD 3000 (R82.00) one way and takes 6 hours. Once in Goris, you’ll then need to hire a taxi to the cable car in Halidzor village.

8. Byurakan Observatory

8 of the Best Day Trips from Yerevan | Wanderlust Movement | #armenia #yerevan #traveltips #travelinspiration

Byurakan is the Armenian mecca for space nerds. Set against the backdrop of Mount Aragats, it’s the country’s premier astronomical centre established during the Soviet Era and is an interesting day trip from Yerevan.

During its heydey, it was home to the largest telescope in the USSR and played a crucial part in bringing Armenia into the realm of modern science.

The observatory hosts guided tours for a small fee in several languages, or you can join an organised tour from Yerevan.

  • Go to the Kilikia Bus Station to take a bus.
  • The buses run from 9:00 to 19:30 every day.
  • A single ride costs AMD 200 (R6.00).
  • Travel time is around 45 minutes.

I appreciate the post and have found a few of the bus stations mentioned, but I haven’t been able to find a “Masiv Market bus station”. Does it have a different name, perhaps?

November 30, 2017 at 1:00 pm

Hey, nope that is its name. It’s right by Mercedes Benz. I’d recommend contacting Envoy Hostel in Yerevan if you’re still having problems finding it. They list the bus station under that name on their site as well and have super helpful staff 🙂

Just some additional info for you- It is called Gai Bus Station according to Google Maps (on Gai Ave., near the Gai statue).

Amazing post, I am planning a 4 day trip to Yerevan, and your post will surely help me a lot, is it easy to communicate in English there?

A lot more people speak English in Yerevan. You might struggle once you go out of the touristy areas.

Thanks for your help Lauren. We caught local bus 467 at 0900 from David of Sassun station. It dropped us at Khor Virap turnoff so a short walt to the monastry. On the way back we hitched back to the highway, crossed the road and walked towards Yerevan. Just past the T road we waited by fruit stalls and caught bus 460 that took us back to the metro start point. Looks like 460 runs hourly at this time of year anyway.

September 26, 2018 at 11:08 am

That’s awesome! I hope you got a clear view of the mountain from Khor Virap 🙂

Things to Do in Yerevan | Armenia Travel Guide

By Author Christian L.

Categories Armenia , Caucasus , Destinations

Known as the Pink City, Yerevan is a fascinating place to explore impressive architecture and beautiful parks. It is the capital city of Armenia and is rich in cultural attractions.

I love Yerevan Armenia sign

Since the early 2000s, many reconstruction projects have taken place to make the city more appealing.

This compact city is very walkable, making it easy to see a variety of attractions in a single trip. Here you’ll find many churches, museums, and examples of Soviet-era architecture. In between these older structures, there are lots of modern cafés and shops to visit.

You will never be short of things to do in the city of Yerevan. This guide will provide you with information on the best local landmarks to visit, some practical tips on getting around, and suggestions for where to stay in Yerevan.

What to Do in Yerevan, Armenia

There are many sightseeing opportunities and enjoyable activities to try in this city. You can take a train from Tbilisi , the capital city of Armenia’s neighboring country of Georgia , to start discovering Yerevan’s landmarks and history.

Here are some of the top attractions and activities in Yerevan to include in your trip.

Walk Around Republic Square

This is the main square of Yerevan and a great place to meet friends or do some people-watching. The large square contains the Singing Fountains and is surrounded by impressive buildings.

When standing in the middle of Republic Square, you can see why Yerevan is called the Pink City. Most of the buildings have a pinkish glow because of the stones used to build them.

I Love Yerevan Sign in front of the History Museum of Armenia at the Republic square

The government buildings are grand examples of Soviet architecture, built in a Neoclassical style. The Armenian Marriott Hotel was also constructed in the 1950s and is quite stunning with its high arches.

Republic Square yerevan armenia

You can see the National Gallery and History Museum of Armenia in this square too. If you have time to look around inside, you won’t be disappointed. These spectacular structures contain unique archeological objects and the largest collection of Armenian art in the world.

Every evening during the summer, the square’s Singing Fountains light up and ‘dance’ to music. You can grab a coffee or ice cream from one of the many shops in the area and then return to the square for this water show.

Climb the Cascades

The Cascades is a massive white limestone stairway built up a hillside to the upper part of the city. It was designed to be an Art Deco version of the Hanging Gardens of ancient Babylon .

Yerevan Cascade armenia

At the foot of this magnificent structure is the Sculpture Garden. In this small green zone, you can see a collection of unique sculptures from Botero and other famous artists.

Yerevan Cascade

You can climb up the stairs of the Cascades for a wonderful view of the whole city. On clear days, you can also see Mount Ararat in the distance.

Yerevan Cascade

The structure is massive, and it can take a while to climb all the stairs. Still, there are beautiful mini-gardens with fountains and sculptures at each level to keep you going.

Yerevan Cascade

If you don’t feel like climbing the stairs, there are escalators inside the Cascades that take you to the top. In any case, it’s stunning to see the Cafesjian Museum of Modern Art on the inside of this structure. It houses many galleries and exhibits of different artworks.

Go to Freedom Square

This is the other main square of Yerevan and is also called Liberty Square or Opera Square. It is part of the Yerevan Opera Theater complex, which includes the large opera building, the opera park, and the Swan lake.

Yerevan Opera Armenia

During the day, the square is filled with open-air cafés and children riding around on bikes. At night, the large opera house is brightly lit and buzzing with people. Together, the two different halls inside the theater can hold up to 2,600 people.

When the opera building was established in the 1930s, the first ballet performance on its stage was Swan Lake . And so, the lake in the complex was named after this famous ballet.

The unique Armenian opera Anoush has been performed at the opera house every year since its opening. You can buy tickets and see this amazing performance one evening while you’re in Yerevan.

Visit a Church

Armenia was the first country in the world to institute Christianity as its official religion. So it’s no surprise to find many beautiful churches across Yerevan.

Katoghike Church is the oldest church still standing in Yerevan. It dates back to the 1200s and has a typical Armenian architectural style. Today, this small building is used as a prayer house.

St Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral yerevan

The largest cathedral in Armenia is the St Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan. This is not an old building like most of the other churches. The cathedral was built to celebrate Armenia’s 1700th anniversary as a Christian nation and was only completed in 2001.

This cathedral includes a tall bell tower and a large domed ceiling. The exterior is made from orange-tinted limestone. This enormous structure can be seen from many parts of the city and is one of the not-to-be-missed Yerevan attractions.

All the churches in Yerevan are open from early morning until late in the evening. You can enter for free and take a look around the intriguing architecture.

See the Blue Mosque

The 18th-century Shia mosque is currently the only active mosque in the country. This makes it one of the culturally significant places to visit in Armenia.

Blue Mosque yerevan armenia

From the 1920s until the 1990s, the Blue Mosque served only as a history museum. After Armenia’s independence from the Soviet Union, the mosque was renovated and used as a religious institution again.

The Iranian government supported the mosque’s renovation and donated money to the cause. Today, the Blue Mosque serves many Iranians who live in Yerevan.

The large dome and turquoise, indigo, and yellow mosaic exterior are beautiful to see. You can also go inside the mosque when prayers are not in progress.

Walk Through the Armenian Genocide Memorial

While you’re enjoying all the beauty Yerevan has to offer, it is also important to remember the somber history of this country. During your visit to Armenia, take time to pay your respects at the Genocide Memorial complex.

Armenian Genocide Memorial yerevan armenia

This memorial was built in 1967 on Tsitsernakaberd hill. It commemorates the victims of the Armenian genocide that took place from 1915 to 1922.

The Memorial complex includes the Tsitsernakaberd monument and the Genocide Museum. The striking monument is made from a circle of 12 leaning slabs, each representing one of Armenia’s lost provinces. In the center of these slabs is an eternal flame to remember the genocide victims.

Eternal flame yerevan armenia

On April 24, the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, thousands of Armenians travel to the memorial to commemorate those who died. Many important political and religious figures from around the world have also visited the memorial site over the years.

The Genocide Museum offers free entry to locals and tourists. It uses photos, documents, and films to guide visitors through the tragic historical event. Although it is a saddening experience, this tour will also give you a new appreciation for the Armenian culture and fighting spirit.

Explore the City’s Old Quarters

Since Yerevan doesn’t have an official ‘old town’, that honor goes to the neighborhood of Kond. This area is located on a hillside to the west of Yerevan’s city center.

Kond dates back to the 17th century and includes houses built in Ottoman, Muslim, and Persian styles. In some places, the winding streets and narrow alleyways are only about 120 cm (47 inches) wide.

You can reach this neighborhood via a steep street or one of the narrow staircases leading up from the main road. The area is mostly residential, with a few modern buildings here and there.

Don’t expect to see a picturesque old town, as many buildings are broken down, and gardens are overgrown. However, most of this architecture dates back centuries, so you can enjoy a day wandering around and discovering the area’s rich history and hidden gems.

Tour the Ararat Brandy Museum

Armenian brandy is famous worldwide and a source of great pride for the country. If you want to discover how these brandies are made, a tour of the Ararat Brandy Museum is one of the most interesting Yerevan activities to try.

Brandy Museum Yerevan

The first brandy production company in Armenia was founded in 1887. Today, the Yerevan Brandy Company has won many international awards and certificates.

You can take a two-hour guided tour at the Ararat Brandy Museum, where you’ll discover all the steps that go into the production of these well-known drinks. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy a delicious tasting of several iconic Ararat brandies.

Yerevan Brandy Apricot

Note: You’ll need to book a tour on the museum website ahead of time. When you do the booking, you can choose which brandy tasting you would like to do. There is a price difference between the options.

Browse the Vernissage Flea Market

This large open-air market is the ideal place to shop for souvenirs to take back home. Or you can just browse and enjoy the variety of traditional Armenian products on display.

Vernissage Flea Market yerevan armenia

Vernissage is held behind the Republic Square metro every weekend from spring to fall. It started with a small group of artists in the 1980s and continued to expand over the years.

Almost all the items at the market are handmade, including jewelry, ceramics, woven rugs, toys, and paintings. You can also find an interesting variety of books, vintage parts, electronics, and even pets on sale.

Get Wet at the Vardavar Festival

Vardavar is also known as the ‘water holiday’ and is a very popular festival in Armenia. Every year in July, precisely 14 weeks after Easter, the whole country takes to the streets for a fun-filled day.

Just like the rest of the country, the city of Yerevan becomes a playground for adults and children alike. Everyone walks around with water guns, jugs, and buckets of water.

There are no rules, and you can get splashed by complete strangers—so don’t expect to go home dry on this day. It is quite refreshing, as summer temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F).

Besides the spontaneous splashing activities, you can also attend more organized events. The festival aims to promote the country’s traditions and culture, and you can listen to lovely performances of Armenian folk songs.

Discover the Best Restaurants in Yerevan

Yerevan has a great restaurant scene and delicious cuisine for you to taste. When you walk through the city streets, you can find a mix of traditional taverns and modern wine bars. In the evening, you’ll see many locals eating and relaxing at outdoor cafés.

armenia wine yerevan

Dolmama serves authentic Armenian food and is famous in Yerevan and abroad. The restaurant’s main dish is dolma , a ground meat dish wrapped in grape leaves.

Lavash is another restaurant that serves traditional Armenian cuisine. Their specialty is lavash flatbread dishes, but they also have a variety of other local meals on their menu. On the first floor of the restaurant, you can watch the process of making the appetizing flatbread.

If you’re interested in discovering Armenian nightlife, head to the El Sky Bar in Yerevan. This open-air cocktail bar is located on the 7th floor of the Yerevan Plaza Business Center. At El Sky Bar, you can listen to some of the best DJs while enjoying panoramic views of the city.

Try the local craft beer

Armenian craft beer might not be as famous as the local brandy, but also in this small part of the world is the craft beer industry growing. While the main microbrewery in Yerevan is Dargett which has already been in the game for a few years already, the place serves some of the best western food in Yerevan and offers around 20 locally made beers on top.

While Dargett was the only local craft beer in Yerevan for a few years, so is there now also another craft beer bar worth visiting, The Dors.

Take A Day Trip from Yerevan

Armenia is quite small, so it is easy to take a day trip from Yerevan city to other parts of the country. You can travel on your own by private or public transport, or join a day trip from a local travel agency.

One of the shortest day trips is to the Khor Virap Monastery in the Ararat Plains. The ancient stone monastery is an important historical site. From there, you also get spectacular views of Mount Ararat.

Khor Virap armenia

For another short trip, you can combine a visit to the Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery . These two impressive buildings are only about 10 km (6 miles) apart, which makes it easy to see both in one day.

The Garni Temple is a Greco-Roman structure dating back to the 1st century, and Geghard is a medieval monastery partially carved out of the mountain.

Garni Temple Armenia

Lake Sevan is a longer drive from Yerevan but well worth it for nature lovers. It is the largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region. You can enjoy stunning lake views and visit the nearby Sevanavank Monastery.

If you are interested in space, consider a day trip to the Byurakan Observatory. This astronomical observatory was built in the 1900s during Soviet times. Back then, it housed the largest telescope in the whole Soviet Union.

Things to Know When Visiting Yerevan, Armenia

Yerevan is a beautiful place to visit with lots of exciting things to do. But while you’re planning your trip, there are also some practical tips that you should keep in mind.

Is Armenia Safe For Travelers?

Yerevan, and Armenia in general, is a safe place to visit, even for solo travelers. Crime rates are low and don’t specifically target tourists. You can feel at ease walking through the city streets, using public transport, and going out to bars or restaurants at night.

Although petty crimes like pickpocketing are not common, it never hurts to take some basic precautions. Try not to carry a lot of cash around, and you should be fine.

The biggest concern you have to look out for in Armenia is road safety. Pay attention when you walk across the street and try to avoid driving at night.

How to Get Into Yerevan

Visitors from most countries, including Australia, America, and countries in the European Union, don’t need a visa to enter Armenia. However, tourists from most African countries will need a visa.

Tip: To check whether you’ll need a visa for your Yerevan trip, you can use this site .

There are many flights to Yerevan from countries in Europe and the Middle East. Flights land at Zvartnots International Airport, about 15 km (9 miles) from Yerevan. From there you can take a bus or taxi to the city.

If you want to travel overland into Yerevan, you can only cross the border from Iran or Georgia. The Armenian borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed.

The most convenient overland option is to take a train from Tbilisi (in Georgia) to Yerevan. If you want to travel by bus, Georgia is a better option than Iran as the road quality is higher and the route is shorter.

Getting Around in Yerevan

You can mostly walk around Yerevan since everything is relatively close together. If you want to travel somewhere farther, you can choose from a number of public and private transport options.

The main public transport system in Yerevan are marshrutkas . These minivans act as shared taxis and drive all around the city. You’ll find it at bus stops, or you can wave one down from anywhere on the street.

The city’s metro is very clean and safe to use. Of course, the trains stop at designated underground stations, so you have to plan your route and buy the correct ticket.

Yandex is a popular ride-hailing service that works much like Uber. You can download the app on your phone and use it to request a private taxi to your destination. The rides are safe and very affordable.

Where to Stay

There are many affordable hostels and guest houses where you can stay when you visit Yerevan. Prices range from $14 to $30 (in 2021).

It is best to stay in the ‘ring’ around the city center, as that puts all the top attractions within walking distance. If you want to stay outside the city center, choose a place that is close to a metro or bus station.

The Highland Hostel is a great option for a shared living space in the city center. The small but spacious hostel can host ten people. There is a shared kitchen, lounge, and bathroom with a shower. You can easily walk to attractions such as Republic Square and the Opera Theater.

If you want to stay in a guest house away from the bustling city center, Guest House Lilia is a comfortable and affordable choice. You can enjoy a continental breakfast every morning or make use of the shared kitchen.

The Guest House Lilia has a currency exchange service for guests. It is also located close to a metro station, and several bus stops to give you easy access to the city’s landmarks.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Yerevan is during spring or fall. The days are sunny but not too hot or cold to sit at an outdoor café. In spring, you can get great views of Mount Ararat, and there are beautiful flower markets on the streets.

Summer and winter are also suitable for visiting if you want to try certain activities, but the weather is generally not too pleasant.

Also, avoid visiting over the New Year period. Almost all the shops, restaurants and museums are closed during this time.

Final Thoughts on Traveling to Yerevan in Armenia

If you’re planning an Armenia vacation, the capital city of Yerevan is a wonderful place to have on your bucket list. Walk around and discover a mixture of historic and modern sites.

You’ll find everything from cathedrals and museums to bars and opera houses. Yerevan is a city with a rich culture and friendly people who will welcome you on your journey.

Great post! My partner got sick in Yerevan and we ended up having to stay a lot longer than we planned, 10 days in total. Honestly, it was a great city to get stuck in!

Did you make it to the old GUM Market? Watching the ladies make their lavash bread was a highlight for me.

Christian L.

Heey. During my first visit to Yerevan, did I spend about a week there, I really like the city, but December is not the best time to spend a lot of time there. I visited the Gum Market during my first visit there:) PS. I gone use your post about Tusheti In Georgia for reference when im heading back to Georgia for the 6th time next year:)

Best Day Trips from Yerevan

I spent many years not realizing the value and offerings of my own country.

We tend to all do that with the place we call home. In recent years, I started traveling around Armenia in search of some of the best places to recommend to visitors (and locals!)

What really struck me as special is that the small size of Armenia allowed for so many opportunities to take day trips from Yerevan, the capital city.

So many of these Yerevan day trips are incomparable to sights you’d find in other parts of the world.

The unique and mesmerizing sights surrounding Yerevan makes the capital city really special.

This day trips guide will showcase UNESCO World Heritage Sites, historic monasteries, stunning scenery, adventurous landscapes, and much more.

Noravank Monastery travel guide (Things to do in Noravank and how to get there)-6

All of the places listed on this Yerevan day trips guide are within three hours of the capital city and we detail why you should visit.

Many are easily visited with a marshrutka, private car, or by taking an affordable tour.

If you have suggestions of worthwhile day trips from Yerevan, please shoot us an email or leave a comment in the section below.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for Armenia?

We definitely recommend booking travel insurance for Armenia if you’re heading there.  We highly suggest using SafetyWing , a travel insurance made by travelers, for travelers.

The Norwegian company is the one when we use it when on the road and Megan uses them when she is in Armenia.

Their policies offer widespread coverage and affordable rates

Renting a Car in Armenia

One of the easiest ways to get around. The roads are slowly taking shape and getting fixed and they are pretty safe to drive on these days.

Yerevan’s traffic can be madness, but outside of the city, you will find the roads pretty easy and never really that congested with traffic.

What to Pack for Armenia

Packing for Armenia is pretty easy if you pack for the correct season.  Summer is hot; winter is cold. Here are some other things we recommend packing for your trip to Armenia:

Power adapter (Europe):  If you’re coming from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, or somewhere that is not mainland Europe, you will need a European power adapter .

We recommend just purchasing one and then connecting it to a power strip from your home country’s plug type.

Lonely Planet Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan:  Sometimes it is nice to have a tangible book in your hand and the Lonely Planet one for the Caucasus is no exception.

We recommend investing in one for your trip as you will have all the information you need at your fingertips and you won’t have to spend too much time glued to your phone.

Click here to purchase Lonely Planet Caucasus.

Things to do in Garni: Azat Reservoir

Reusable Water Bottle (Klean Kanteen):   Armenia has awesome water and you will want to tote your reusable water bottle with you so that you don’t have to resort to purchasing bottled water.

Armenia is trying to clean up its plastic and trash so be part of the solution, not the problem!

Click here to see the Klean Kanteen we travel with.

Allergy Pills (if you need them):  Megan sometimes struggles with allergies in Armenia during certain times of the year.

The air can be somewhat dusty, particularly if you head down south where the climate is dry and arid and there are not many trees.

If you struggle with dust, be sure to bring some allergy pills to help you out.

Yerevan Day Trips to Other Cities in Armenia

Below, you will find some of our favorite day trips from Yerevan.

We have selected the most popular ones and will continue to add to this in the future with others.

We will also be creating a guide of off-the-path places to visit from Yerevan in the future.

Etchmiadzin

It will take you about 35 minutes to reach by car or taxi.

When is the best time to go to Etchmiadzin? The best time to travel to Etchmiadzin is in the spring.

The flowers begin blooming and the churches are colorful and lively in and around the Easter holidays.

Visiting Etchmiadzin around the New Year is also fun as the city is home to a Pomegranate Festival.

If you’re interested in food festivals, be sure to head out this way during May for a Tolma Festival near the Zvartnots Cathedral.

Etchmiadzin, Armenia - Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

How to get from Yerevan to Etchmiadzin:  There are a couple of ways to get from Yerevan to Etchmiadzin.

You can take a minibus from Kilikia Bus Station at 6 Isakov Avenue to Etchmiadzin. In addition, there are new minibuses that will take you from Etchmiadzin to Yerevan center and not to the Kilikia Station. This is bus #203.

For the buses that go to Kilikia station, the price is 250 AMD (old minibuses). The new minibuses are 300 AMD back to Yerevan center.  They run from approximately 0800-2000 daily.

You can also take a taxi to Etchmiadzin.  It will take you only 20 minutes and less than 6 USD (2500 AMD) to take a taxi from Yerevan to Etchmiadzin. Use locals online apps like GG, Utaxi, and Yandex.

Click here to view our Yerevan taxi guide .  Also, booking a tour to Etchmiadzin is a great option as it will take the pain of traveling back and forth there!

Why you should visit Etchmiadzin: Also known as the Armenian Vatican, or Holy City, Echmiadizin is actually much older than the Vatican and is the main religious center for all Armenians and many other Christians in the world because the oldest Christian churches can be found there.

Etchmiadzin, Armenia - Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

The oldest Christian churches in the world date back to the 4th-century AD and are situated in the city of Etchmiadzin, the perfect day trip from Yerevan for those that want to see UNESCO World Heritage Sites or a very important religious site.

Etchmiadzin is located 20 minutes away from Yerevan and is actually my hometown where I grew up.

Things to do in Etchmiadzin:  We have previously written an extensive guide of what to do in Etchmiadzin that you can check out.

For the sake of this day trips post, here are some quick places worth nothing in the Holy City.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Etchmiadzin:   There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Etchmiadzin- Saint Hripsime Church (built-in 395 AD and completed in 618 AD) and the Etchmiadzin Cathedral (built around 301-303AD).

The mind-blowing construction of these churches was amazing considering the typical architectural techniques that were traditionally used around this period.

Other Etchmiadzin Churches:   There are some other, younger churches worth visiting if you’re in the city.

Saint Gayane, Saint Shogakhat, and Saint Mariam Astvatsatsin (Holy Mary) Churches are a few of note.

Etchmiadzin, Armenia - Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

Zvartnots Cathedral:   On the way to Etchmiadzin, you will pass the entrance and location for Zvartnots Cathedral, ruins dating all the way back to the 7th-century.

It was previously demolished by an earthquake and is now protected by UNESCO for its unique, circular construction.

How far is Garni from Yerevan?   The distance from Yerevan to Garni is 26 kilometers, or around 16 miles.  It will take you about 46 minutes to reach by car or taxi due to the landscapes.

When is the best time to go to Garni?  The best time to visit Garni is, again, in spring.

Armenia really shines during the springtime and May is such an ideal time to take some day trips from the capital city.

The weather is not too hot (July can be really uncomfortably hot) and the flowers are in full bloom.

How to get from Yerevan to Garni: There are a couple of easy ways to get to Garni. The first is by private car.

The second is to take a taxi (we recommend using GG or Yandex).

The third is by minibus.  And the fourth is to take a tour from Yerevan to Garni .

To take a minibus, you will take #266 from the Nor Nork bus station at 14/3 Gai Avenue next to the Mercedes-Benz shop.

The bus station is located outside of Yerevan center. The ride will take approximately 40 minutes and costs about 250 AMD (about $0.50).  A taxi to Garni is about 3500 AMD (about $7).

Why you should visit Garni:   Garni Temple is truly a unique place in Armenia and probably far beyond it. It’s the only Pagan temple in the region and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Garni temple and village: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

Things to do in Garni:  We have a whole guide about all the wonderful things to do in Garni , but here are a few quick notes about why you should visit and what there is to do there.

Garni village has breathtaking nature with a gorge cut apart by a scenic river surrounded by mountains. The Garni Temple, built-in 1 BC, is located on the edge of the gorge and is idyllic.

The protected facility has a garden and other ruins in addition to the ancient, royal bath which is located next to the Garni Temple because the temple used to be the summer house of Armenian kings.

Down in the gorge, you can see the obscure landscape of basalt columns that is also called the Symphony of Stones.

They look like they were handcrafted in such an unusually symmetrical manner!

Symphony of Stones in Garni, Armenia: Guide to Garni Temple and things to do there

On the way to Garni, you will have the opportunity to witness such sights like the Arch of Charents, Azat Reservoir, and Caves of Voghjaberd.  This is one of the essential day trips from Yerevan.

It will take you about 1 hour to reach by car or taxi due to the landscape.

How to get from Yerevan to Geghard Monastery: The best way to get from Yerevan to Geghard is by taking a taxi.

It offers a stunning backdrop to the monasteries, lakes, and charming buildings in the region.

The water is warm enough but the air is refreshing enough to offer a nice getaway from Yerevan.

You can also attend the Sevan International Music Festival.

On the other hand, do consider going to Lake Sevan in the off-season.

Sevan suffers from lack of tourism during other times of the year and you will help the economy a bit by putting your trip off for an alternative time of the year, especially if swimming in the lake isn’t the priority on your list.

We love Sevan all times of the year, however.

Best things to do in Lake Sevan Armenia

How to get from Yerevan to Lake Sevan: There are a couple of ways to get from Yerevan to Dilijan.

You can see the options below or read our getting to Lake Sevan from Yerevan guide.

The minibus from Yerevan to Sevan takes off from the Northern Bus Station and the ride takes around 50 minutes.  Just be sure to ask the drivers.  But, bus #317 goes there.  The price is 500 AMD ($1) and it runs from around 0900-1900 daily.

The most comfortable option for getting to Sevan is to take a taxi. It will cost approximately 10,000 AMD ($20).

Why you should visit Lake Sevan:  Beautiful Sevan Lake is the biggest lake in the Caucasus and is considered to be one of the largest freshwater, alpine lakes in Eurasia that is located at a high-altitude.

Things to do in Lake Sevan:  The calm waters of the lake make the perfect place to visit in the summer to escape the city heat.  It also gives you the chance to discover the area where is possible to visit Sevan Peninsula.

On Sevan Peninsula, there are two ancient churches with an observation point from where visitors can see a panorama of Lake Sevan which is surrounded by the Geghama Mountains.

During the golden hour, the panorama is mindblowing!

Things to do and places to visit in Lake Sevan Armenia

There are also other things that put Sevan on a map beside beaches, ancient churches, and nature.

The freshwater lake is teeming with life and it would be remiss of you to not indulge in a crawfish BBQ when visiting Lake Sevan!

How far is Noravank from Yerevan?   The distance from Yerevan to Noravank is 118 kilometers, or around 74 miles.  It will take you about 2 hours and 10 minutes to reach by car or taxi.

When is the best time to go to Noravank?   The best time to travel to Noravank is during the spring or autumn. This area can get quite hot during the summers and can be a bit dusty.

However, there is no bad time to visit Noravank.  A trip to Noravank is best combined with one to Areni.

Noravank: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

How to get from Yerevan to Noravank:  The best way to visit Noravank is by joining an organized tour .  Alternatively, you can take a taxi and it will cost you around 12,500 ($25) one way.

Getting to Noravank by minibus is actually not the most efficient way to get there.  In order to do this, you will need to take one to Yeghegnadzor and then switch over from there.  To read more about this option, go to the next section as we cover it with Areni.

Why you should visit Noravank:   Surrounded by otherworldy, red-colored mountains, Noravank is considered one of the more interesting and unique sights in Armenia and the drive to it is worth going for itself.

Things to see in Noravank:   The sight is located a couple of hours away from Yerevan.

To get there, you will pass the Areni wine region and drive through a narrow gorge where the flowing Amaghu River will reach lead you to Noravank.

It is almost like a secret place that is surrounded by dramatic red-colored rocks.

Next to the rocks, you will find two churches- the Surb Karapet Church and St. Astvatsatsin Church that were erected in the 13th and 14th-centuries.

The ornaments on these churches are masterpieces coming from the ancient times and the triangle stairs on two-story St. Astvatsatsin Church are definitely something to do when you’re there.

Unless you’re Megan… she is scared of heights and attempted anyway.

The temperatures are more tolerable and the Areni Wine Festival is in October, making it the ideal time to travel there!

Areni: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

How to get from Yerevan to Areni: There are a few ways to get to Areni.

The most practical is by tour or with a taxi, but they are definitely not the cheapest options.

Areni and Noravank are close to each other and on the way to Yeghegnadzor city.

You will find minbuses going to Yeghegnadzor from Yerevan.

It is necessary to go to the Gortsaranayin Metro Station and you will find minibuses and shared taxis to Yeghegnadzor.

After exiting the metro station, you need to turn right and go all the way until the end of the road.

Then cross the road, go left, and cross it again by going right… you will then see minibuses.

The minibus will stop next to Areni village and the junction of Noravank.

There is an 8 kilometer walk to Noravank, so we advise you to take a taxi from there.

The price is 1200 AMD (less than $3) and they run between 0800 and 1800 (but be there before 1100).

As suggested above with Noravank, taking a taxi is also an option.

The price is around 13500-15000 AMD (about $27-$30)

Why you should visit Areni:   Armenia is not only churches!  We are also home to the oldest known winery in the world.

That winery was located in Areni and now it has become our most famous wine region despite being 6100 years old!

Things to do in Areni: The meaning and role of wine in Armenian history and religion is really monumental and it was widely used in Armenia before Christianity when the country was Pagan.

Areni: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

The Areni region dates back to ancient times and has always produced wine.

Armenia was always famous for wine, but brandy overshadowed the beverage in recent years. But, it is making a comeback these days!

What also puts Areni on a map and makes it one of the visitable locations in Armenia is the Areni Wine Festival which is happening annually at the beginning of October.

More than 100 types of wines from different small and large winemaking companies and family businesses are displayed during the festival and the whole event is covered with positive vibes with music and BBQ ever-present.

Tsaghkadzor

How far is Tsaghkadzor from Yerevan?   The distance from Yerevan to Tsaghkadzor is 56 kilometers, or around 35 miles.  It will take you about 1 hour to reach by car or taxi.

When is the best time to go to Tsaghkadzor?   Well, if you’re into skiing, then the winter is the absolute best time to visit Tsaghkadzor. Do keep in mind that it is the high-season so things will be slightly pricier.

Tsaghkadzor: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

How to get from Yerevan to Tsaghkadzor:   There are a couple of ways to get from Yerevan to Tsaghkadzor.

The first is by minibus and it’s a bit tricky to get to Tsaghkadzor because you need to change two modes of transport to get there.

To get to Tsaghkadzor, you need to take a minibus from the intersection of Azatutyun Avenue and Nersisyan Street.

This will take you to Hrazdan city.

That price is 500 AMD.  From there, you’ll take a minibus for 100 AMD to Tsaghkadzor.

The best option is to take a taxi to Tsaghkadzor. It’s easy, comfortable, and cheap… and the ride will take you only 40 minutes and cost approximately 6000 AMD ($12).

Why you should visit Tsaghkadzor:   Translated from Armenian, the ‘gorge of flowers’ Tsaghkadzor is not really known for its flowers as much as it is for its skiing and winter sports.  It is the premier place to go downhill skiing in Armenia .

Things to do in Tsaghkadzor:   Located 40 minutes away from Yerevan, the resort town welcomes guests all year round. During the summer, Tsaghkadzor is the perfect place for hiking and mountain biking.

The newly renovated park on the hill has a variety of activities from ziplining to green space and more.

Tsaghkadzor: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

In winter, the mountain ropeway will take you to multiple bases, having skiing stations all the way up the mountains.  This is where my “wise” partner Megan once wore transparent tights when the temperature was -10C.

Every base and ski station has cafes, restaurants, and plenty to do!  So, definitely add Tsaghkadzor as the ultimate Yerevan day trip for those excited about winter in Armenia !

How far is Arzni from Yerevan?   The distance from Yerevan to Arzni is 18 kilometers, or around 11 miles.  It will take you about 30 minutes to reach by car or taxi.

When is the best time to go to Arzni?   We thought Arzni was amazing during autumn, but it was also very quiet then. We recommend spring, summer, or autumn to visit Arzni.

How to get from Yerevan to Arzni:  Aside from a private car, the best way to get to Arzni is by taxi.  There are no minibuses heading that way.  A taxi is 2000 AMD to Arzni (about $4).

Why you should visit Arzni:   Located only 30 minutes away from Yerevan, Arzni is another spa area with healthy mineral water sources, wellness centers, and beautiful green landscapes.

Arzni: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

Things to do in Arzni:   Arzni Gorge is one of the most beloved places for locals and visitors to have picnics with friends and family members because the whole area is full of resorts.  Armenians will flock here to have a BBQ and the entire place will smell like it!  It is heavenly!

The gorge is also popular for hiking along the Hrazdan River.

Ara Village (Kotyk Region) for Nairian Tour

There is a very interesting opportunity to take an eco-tour to the factory of Nairian natural cosmetics.

Located in the Kotayk region near Ara Mountain, Nairian cosmetics is producing an eco-friendly and clean natural products for skin, hair, and the body.

Their products’ bases come from the Armenian highlands and mountains where the volcanic minerals offer a richness unlike anywhere else on the planet.

The knowledgeable tour will take you to the charming Ara village where the Nairian eco-factory is located. You will learn and see how natural cosmetics get made and you’ll have the opportunity to touch and smell the plants used in the creation of them.

Also, you’ll have a chance to relax with organic, homemade tea from local herbs and enjoy your connection with Armenian nature.

How far is Byurakan from Yerevan?   The distance from Yerevan to Byurakan is 34 kilometers, or around 21 miles.  It will take you about 40 minutes to reach by car or taxi.

When is the best time to go to Byurakan?   Summer is the best time to visit Byurakan.  Due to elevation, it is not too hot and it is a great launchpad for hikes to Aragats Mountain.

Byurakan: Best day trips from Yerevan, Armenia (Yerevan day trips guide)

How to get from Yerevan to Byurakan:   There are a couple of ways to get from Yerevan to Byurakan.  There are minibuses going to Byurakan from the Kilikia Bus Station many times daily.  The ride takes about one hour.  The price is 400 AMD (less than $1) and it runs daily between 1030-1950.

Alternatively, you can also take a taxi.  The price is around 3500 AMD ($5).

Why you should visit Byurakan:   Byurakan is a very interesting, albeit obscure place that is located about 40 minutes away from Yerevan. The area is famous because it’s the home of astronomy in Armenia and there are several impressive and observation centers with massive telescopes that were built in the Soviet Union and are still working today.

Things to do in Byurakan:   If you’re looking for a ‘different’ Yerevan day trip, Byurakan offers something that isn’t a monastery or nature (although it does have some sick nature).  It is also only around 5 kilometers away from Aragats Mountain hiking trails.

Aside from that, Byuraken is a little lovely village with hospitable locals and beautiful scenery.

THINGS TO DO IN THE YEREVAN CITY TOUR

Here’s my list of the places to see and things to do in the Yerevan city tour that will help you explore Armenia’s capital city to the fullest.

1. REPUBLIC SQUARE

The Republic Square is the heart of Yerevan city. The square consists of an oval roundabout and another section which contains a pool with musical fountains.

It’s surrounded by government buildings one of which was the House of the Government , others being the National Museum & Marriott hotel.

The Republic Square is the first stop in Yerevan City Tour

This place comes alive at night with the lights adding a festive fervour and people are spotted sitting and enjoying the fountain shows with songs & colourful lighting.

It is rightfully tagged as the cultural hub where people from different places come & spend some quality time socializing with other people.

In a lane next to the square, is a line of shops where you can shop for Armenian souvenirs and authentic Armenian products.

2. GENOCIDE MUSEUM

Now there’s a bit of history that  Armenia & Turkey  share between them . The Armenians generally speak of the atrocities committed by the Turks on their ancestors and haven’t forgiven the Turks.

I’ve been to Turkey previously and am a fan of the country, so I didn’t completely understand the reason for this hostility. After spending a hour & a half at the museum, I understood why the Armenians dislike the Turks.

The Genocide Museum shows you the reason behind the bitterness between the Armenians and the Turkish people

HISTORY BEHIND THE PLACE

The Armenian Genocide that took place before & after the First World War involved a systematic killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks .

It started with the deportation of Armenians from Constantinople (now Istanbul) to Ankara and ended with them being killed. The Ottoman Turks slaughtered the men, kidnapped/raped the women and religiously converted the children.

Despite all that, Armenians were good at trade, education, industrial growth, book publishing, medicine. In fact they were the pioneers of using innovative technologies even in those times.

The Genocide Memorial Complex built to commemorate the Armenians who lost their lives in the Genocide

OTHER SECTION OF THE MUSEUM

Walking upstairs, you’ll see a memorial complex. This Genocide memorial complex  is built on the hill of Tsitsernakaberd  to commemorate the Armenians – who died during the genocide.

The memorial is designed with a 44m stone slab symbolizing the national rebirth of the Armenians. Twelve slabs are positioned in a circle, representing the 12 lost provinces in current day Turkey.

There’s an eternal flame at the centre of the 12 slabs dedicated to the 1.5 million people killed during the Genocide.

Just reading about the loss of Armenian lives in the Genocide gives you chills

When you get to the other side of the complex, you’ll reach an empty courtyard area from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.

Looking at the views, you can only marvel at the bravery of the Armenians who’ve seen so much of bloodshed in their history and yet never lost their spirit.

EXPERIENCE AT THE MUSEUM

It is deeply saddening to read the story of the Genocide on the walls of the museum & your throat will dry up on several instances when you read how brutally the Armenians were murdered.

It’s a numbing feeling when your mind works in imagery and you vividly visualise things as you read them.

You’ll develop a certain amount of respect not out of pity but out of appreciation for the determination & bravery of the Armenian people. I generally don’t find museums appealing but this place didn’t just catch my attention but captured my imagination.

You’ll read, breathe and live the Armenian story through the walls in the museum. An experience at this museum is truly enriching which makes this a must-do place in the Yerevan city tour.

3. WATCH A SHOW AT THE OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE

The famous  Opera & Ballet Theatre  is the pride of Armenia. It is intimidatingly fabulous in terms of it’s architecture and is the hub of art & culture.

The Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre is Yerevan

Even when Armenia faced dire situations in it’s history, the Opera always remained a higher priority. It symbolises the relentless fight, tenacity and spirit of the Armenian public.

Performing and working in a Bollywood musical   myself, I was keen to see some performance theatre of Armenia but I ran out of luck as there wasn’t any show playing in the theatre that week. I hope you have the goodluck of watching a show or two here!

TIP – In case you don’t get to see a show here, there’s an ice-cream parlour in the premise for consolation.

4. FREEDOM SQUARE

The Freedom Square is another happening place in Yerevan you don’t want to miss out on. It has a number of cafes, outdoor galleries and there’s always a buzz around the place.

Statue of Martiros Saryan - Yerevan City Tour

Walk up to the  statue of Martiros Saryan ( considered to be one of the greatest painters of Armenian origin) and you’ll find a beautiful outdoor art gallery.

Local artists & painters neatly arrange and put up their artworks. Water paintings, oil paintings, cloth painting, ceramic plate painting, wooden artwork – the gallery has it all.

Such is the craftsmanship, detail and precision in the artworks on show, that you’ll end up buying some artwork yourself. I ended up buying ceramic plate artwork & an absolutely out-of-the-world dry flower painting made with petals of exotic perfume flowers.

A lovely art gallery at the Freedom Square in Yerevan

I love how you can bargain a few thousand Armenian drams (no kidding) from the artists here. You’ll find artists who have their own pamphlet with a feature of their works that are internationally famous.

The guy who’s dry flower art I had purchased looked like a struggling artist but he surprised me when he went to his car parked by the tree-side and grabbed change from inside and gave it to me.

Appearances can be deceptive and how! Make sure you include this place in your Yerevan city tour.

TIP – There’s a little cafe across the main road on the opposite side of the Opera theatre. Do have a cappuccino there as it’s absolutely smashing!

5. VISIT THE MOTHER ARMENIA STATUE IN YEREVAN

The next stop in the Yerevan city tour is the famous Mother Armenia statue.  Mother Armenia Statue  is a captivating place where you can easily spend an hour or two at. Mother Armenia – as the name suggests is a female personification of Armenia.

The Mother Armenia Statue is a must-visit place in the Yerevan City Tour

Standing tall on a pedestal, the statue – located in Victory Park overlooks the entire city of Yerevan. The monumental statue replaces the statue of General Secretary Joseph Stalin that was created as a victory memorial after World War II.

In 1962 the statue of Stalin was removed and replaced by the Mother Armenia statue designed by Ara Harutyunyan . The overall height of the statue along with the pedestal & elevated platform is 51m.

WHAT THE STATUE SYMBOLIZES

The monument symbolises peace through strength & courage. It is an ode to the many brave female warriors & figures in Armenian history like – Sose Mayrig & other women like her who took up arms to help their husbands in their war with the Turkish troops & Kurds.

If you see the statue carefully, then you’ll notice that it looks like an old, muscular lady ready to take some action with her sword. She is seen as the  protector , nurturer , saviour , highlighting the important status that older Armenian women have in the family.

It’s location on a hill overlooking the city makes it look like the watchful guardian of Armenia.

The Mother Armenia statue symbolizes peace through strength & courage

IN AND AROUND THE STATUE

If you climb a few steps onto the platform below the pedestal of the statue, then you’ll walk into a museum. This museum displays a gallery of the various bravehearts and legends that fought for Armenian independence.

Outside the museum, there are demo weapons, fighter planes, war-tanks, and missile launchers placed around the Mother Armenia statue for people to visualize what wars must have felt like. Also, there are several stalls of food & drinks lined up for visitor’s convenience.

6. WINE AND DINE AT “TERRAZZA”

All touring and no eating makes the Yerevan city tour a dull affair. If you don’t mind shelling out a few bucks for a great gourmet dining experience, then  Terrazza is the place for you in Yerevan.

It has the best Armenian food & seafood besides some refreshing coolers & mocktails. The ambience is warm, cozy and welcoming. The food quality is top notch and the service is equally good.

Having a meal and drinks at the Terrazza restaurant is a must-do in the Yerevan City Tour

Royal interiors and a comfortable themed outdoor seating make it an aesthetically beautiful place as well. The prawns, grilled salmon with veggies, steak, chicken & fries are some of it’s specialties. In dessert, the chocolate lava cake is an absolute knockout!

You have to dine here once and the place will ensure you come back again for more. Infact, if you’re staying somewhere far from the city and have a midnight hunger pang, then visit or order online from the Caucasus restaurant.

It’s the only restaurant that gives a 24 hour service.

7. VISIT THE CAFESJIAN CENTRE FOR THE ARTS

Inside the famous  Yerevan Cascade, is an art museum called the Cafesjian Centre for the Arts. On your way to the cascade, firstly you’ll see Cafesjian sculpture gardens with sculptures and contemporary artworks on display.

My favourite one is the brown bronze sculpture of a woman smoking a cigarette.

The Cafesjian Centre for the Arts in the Yerevan Cascade in Armenia

It is a quiet place where you can find space to just sit down, read a book or find inspiration from all the art around you. The line of gardens leads to the cascade which is a complex containing a massive staircase with fountains & sculptures in the terrace garden.

You can go to the top of the cascade if you just want to enjoy the view. To reach the top, either climb up the stairs or go through the center (which is free to enter) and take escalators to the top.

But if you’re into art, then I suggest you to buy tickets to the museum at the entrance. The tickets grant you access to the exclusive art exhibitions at every level.

The only way you can access each tier of the cascade is that first you take an escalator, then get off it- walk to the right – take an elevator to go down in the cascade and enter a gallery.

Inspired by the vision of its founder, Gerard L. Cafesjian , the Center offers a wide variety of exhibitions, derived from the Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection of contemporary art.

ART GALLERIES INSIDE THE CAFESJIAN CENTRE FOR THE ARTS

The Cafesjian Art Galleries include the  Gallery One ,  Khanjyan Gallery ,  Eagle Gallery ,  Sasuntsi Davit Garden Gallery ,  Star Landing  and the  Special Events Auditorium.

In the  Khanjyan gallery,  a huge mural is executed by Soviet & Armenian painter Grigor Khanjyan.  The 3 primary scenes of the mural illustrate important events in Armenian history – Armenian Alphabet, Vardanank, Resurrected Armenia .

Mural illustration in the Khanjyan Art Gallery

The detailing involved in the making of the mural is awe-inspiring. You’ll end up wondering if it’s humanly possible to make a piece of art that well-defined & intricate.

If the fine details are a characteristic of Khanjyan, then the sculptural technique is the USP of the next gallery.

In the  Sasuntsi Davit Gallery – “ basrelief” – the sculpting protrudes out of the wall like a 4-D artwork. The sculpture is 15 times larger than the original graphic piece it is translated from, making it a contemporary masterpiece.

MY FAVOURITE ART EXHIBIT – “THE FLY”

My favourite part is this art exhibit called “The FLY” from Armenian artist & designer  Arman Nur . He creates an artwork – a one-line painting with the silhouette of Yerevan and a special animation, tracing guess what?

The trajectory of a fly!

Artist Arman Nur explaining the concept of his Art Exhibit - The Fly

He was present there at the Center to explain his artwork. He also showed us a live demo of it’s working. In this, the  “stressful fly” moves in a trajectory creating a single line painting of his own face.

His aim is to transfer the viewer into a virtual parallel reality and perceive reality in a different manner . He wants us to see life from the eyes of something as small, perceivably disgusting & insignificant as a Fly.

He even plans to go to Paris & show the same artwork. This time with the exception of the fly tracing the silhouette of the map of Paris. How freaking creative is that!

Me getting to be a part of the Fly spectacles exhibit at the Cafesjian Centre for Arts

He then offered us the  “Fly spectacles”  that he created, to see the world from the eyes of a fly. I must say it felt surreal – like another dimension altogether.

The concept was to view the relationship between mankind & nature through the Prism of Love .  His speech was translated to us by this lovely lady called Annahit from Sweden (Thankyou mam!).

REST OF THE EXPERIENCE

After Arman Nur’s excellence, you’ll see the Gerard L. Cafesjian collection or the Eagle Garden Gallery . Some of the exhibits look so amazingly close to real life that you’ll feel you’re in Madame Tussaud.

At the top level is the Swarovski crystal museum. After this, you can climb a few stairs to get to the top of the cascade.

Getting to enjoy the panoramic city view of Yerevan from the top of the Yerevan Cascade is the best part of the Yerevan City Tour

It offers a terrific view of Yerevan city. The place fills you with a sense of contentment. A feeling similar to the one that hits you after watching a brilliant film. This place was my personal favourite in the Yerevan city tour.

8. PAMPER YOURSELF AT THE WINE AND GRAPE SPA

If you want a 3 hour pampering of the highest order, then a session here is the best thing to do. The Wine & Grape Spa  prides itself on spa treatments involving the sweet grapes from the Ararat valley.

They say that once you dip in the wine made from this fruit, you will, after the treatment, feel youthful & strong. Even if you’re a guy, I recommend you to choose the Goddess package .

The name of the package has got nothing to do with gender. It just has the most number of treatments included (9 treatments).

Experiencing royal wellness at the Wine and Grape Spa is the highlight of the Yerevan City Tour

They base their treatments on the healing magical properties of grape seeds & fresh blend that rejuvenates & provides the essential nutrients your skin desires. All this while you get to sip the Ararat grape wine yourself.

If this isn’t Royal Wellness, show me what is!

I have had spa treatments at various spa centres in the world but let me tell you that even I have never experienced something like this.

Not many people who come to Yerevan know of this hidden gem, so I absolutely recommend you to include a visit to this spa in your Yerevan city tour itinerary.

The treatments are not that expensive. Plus you get a couple’s discount on the packages.

9. PARTY AT THE PAPARAZZI

Paparazzi is certainly the best party pub in the city of Yerevan . If you visit this place, then make sure you do it late night on the weekends. I went to this place during the week and had the entire place to myself.

The pub has plush interiors, an attractive bar counter and a classy ambience. There’s also a cafe at the top in case you’re feeling a bit mellow. The bartenders are friendly and know how to put on a show to entertain you while making your drink.

Surprise Motherfucker cocktail in the Paparazzi Club in Yerevan

Travellers/Tourists get free rounds of “welcome drinks”, so make sure you play your visitor card . The sound system is thumping with the beats setting up the mood for the night. And the drinks? You’ve got to be here to experience that.

TIP –  Try the Surprise Motherfucker drink. You’re welcome.

10. ENJOY ARMENIAN FOOD AT “QAGHAQ PANDOK”

A Yerevan city tour without an authentic Armenian food experience is incomplete. Afterall, tasting local cuisine is the most important part of a memorable travel experience.

So staying in the capital of Armenia, it’s all the more imperative to taste local Armenian food. Qaghaq Pandok gives you all that and more! Get a taste of the best traditional Armenian food accompanied with some fine wine at this place.

The Qaghaq Pandok restaurant offers you a traditional authentic Armenian food experience in the Yerevan City Tour

The interiors are warm and resemble a Hogwarts-like film set with it’s wooden furniture and lighting. The food is fresh, flavoursome, tasty and filling. There are a variety of options for both – vegetarian & non-vegetarian food.

The service is swift and I’d suggest you remember what you ordered because you won’t understand the Armenian font in the bill during the time of payment.  It’s the perfect end to a long satisfying travel day.

So that’s my guide on the Yerevan city tour exploring the beautiful capital city of Yerevan, Armenia. Armenia is like a delightful budget-friendly surprise, punching much above it’s weight.

In fact it has quietly sneaked into my list of favourite destinations, leaving many famous overrated expensive destinations behind. Yerevan, the capital city is the perfect blend of art, history, and culture, blending well with the modern times. And did I mention the women of Armenia?

It’s like a Fashion Week Parade happening on streets with gorgeous women everywhere – be it at currency exchange centres or supermarkets. Too bad I couldn’t settle in Yerevan to find a date for myself because of the return ticket that I’d booked in advance. Better luck next time to me I guess!

You have such a GIFT with words! You have a way of making history come alive! I thoroughly enjoyed every word. And I am so amazed by the spirit of the Armenian people despite the atrocities! I hope I can visit here as well as Turkey one day!

I am glad you feel so and actually took the effort to read it. Means a lot! The Armenians are indeed a humble, sweet, hardworking bunch of people. And Turkey is a delightful experience of a kind! Travel is such a blessing sometimes.

' data-srcset=

I am not much of a traveler, but my daughters have traveled extensively around Europe and Asia. They have not been to the places you show so I will share this with them for future travel plans. Your pictures are amazing.

Thankyou Debby. I hope you too join your daughters on the travel bandwagon!

' data-srcset=

Oh my gosh, so much to mention! First, I love blog posts like these because I seldom travel and a great read like this one allows me to escape into your narrative and illustrations of such wonder and adventure. The museums, restaurants, art galleries and breathtaking views – you really brought me into the joy of your trip. Thank you.

Glad I could have you hop on to my travel joyride and experience the place. What’s your favourite travel destination?

' data-srcset=

Armenia looks like a beautiful country. I hope that I will sometimes have the opportunity to visit it.

' data-srcset=

I would definitely enjoy going around historical Armenia. And then I would most definitely stop by that wine and grape after a long tour. Nice way to cap the day. 😀

' data-srcset=

Wow. So much history here! The museum looks like a great place to visit and learn a bit about the history!

' data-srcset=

Wow! I’m impressed with your photos. I never pictured Armenia looking like this. Stunning! And that drink..! 🙂

' data-srcset=

These sound like some amazing places to go and visit. I am sure the Genocide Museum is a place full of so much emotion, a very hard place to go and visit in some ways.

' data-srcset=

I love that they give tourists free drinks. Sounds like a great place to visit.

Haha, how’s that for hospitality aye’!

' data-srcset=

Wow! There are so many parts of the world that gets unseen. Thank you for sharing. The fly spectacles though…

' data-srcset=

Republic Square is really amazing. Every part of photos screams historical vibe. Would definitely go for Armenia once. First list would be Republic Square, then rest of the places for sight seeing. or maybe Mother Armenia for like 10 minutes.

' data-srcset=

Oh wow, this place looks absolutely breathtaking. The Centre for the Arts and the Genocide Museum have really piqued my interest – and I will be writing those down on my list of places to visit one day. Thank you for sharing your beautiful photography

' data-srcset=

I’m a sucker for both history and architecture, so this looks right up my alley. I hope to get there one day!

' data-srcset=

This is a very detailed post. It’s fantastic! Looks like this is a very artistic city. My daughter would love it. I personally would go for the food. 🙂

Food > anything else, isn’t it?!

' data-srcset=

The architecture is amazing but the history is tragic. Thanks for sharing the history and pictures of this place.

' data-srcset=

Great tour! The museum is very interesting and the Opera House is gorgeous. And the spa, oh my!

' data-srcset=

What a beautiful place to visit. I have heard great things about Armenia. I hope to go one day.

' data-srcset=

Wow, this is the place I am thinking of exploring next year. Been to many parts of Europe and Asia but not yet this part of the world. This is certainly a good guide for me. May I check if you have a complete itinerary for these 3 countries in details? I wonder how do you connect from one country to another, via bus or train or flight?

The 3 countries as in? I’ve mentioned just Armenia buddy. And if you plan to do all the 3 in the tri fecta of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan..then you can traverse it through bus if you want to enjoy the view. Else flight is convenient too.

' data-srcset=

This place looks outstanding. What is the best time to visit Armenia? Any hotel recommendation too for this place? Thanks for sharing your experience

Best time to visit is May-June. And hotel recommendations are given in the other posts under the destination Armenia. Do check them out!

' data-srcset=

I’ve never thought about visiting Armenia. After reading your post I’m aso curious and intrigued. So much culture, history, beautiful places. I’m becoming a fan of your blog. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like there is a lot of history in Yerevan and that the Armenian people do respect their heritage by building so many museums and statues dedicated to their heroes. The opera house buildings is so beautiful, I can imagine how amazing it would be to assist to a performance inside.

' data-srcset=

Wow, so many interesting places to check out. We love exploring when we travel, and this sounds like it would be cool to check out.

' data-srcset=

You save us a lot of penny, you know what this is an absolute virtual travel already. Thank you for sharing your experience.

' data-srcset=

There are so many things to experience in Yerevan! The interactions with the artists caught my eye (art through the perspective of a fly?). Also, if you give me some good restaurants and a spa…it makes me a very happy traveler.

That. Drink. Scares. Me. But. The. Name. Entertains. Me.

That drink. When a bartender smashes a beer bottle so neatly in front of you, you’re bound to be at a loss of words for a second.

' data-srcset=

This looks like such an interesting place. I would love to get accustomed with the culture of “Eastern Europe’s” unexplored gem!

' data-srcset=

Love the drink, that is so creative! I wasn’t aware there was so much to do in Armenia. I would love to visit one day.

' data-srcset=

What beautiful art and architecture! Yerevan seems like it is a wonderful place to visit, full of history and culture.

' data-srcset=

This sounds like such a historical yet beautiful place to visit! I will add it to my travel bucket list!!

' data-srcset=

Wow, never been this part of the world but the place look very beautiful. There are so much to see in Yerevan and def. need to check it out next year when I go to Turkey for my friends wedding. Thx for a good suggestion!

Eurasia consists of some wonderful less explored places, that’s why it never made my bucket list. But I’m seeing a lot about the people and history which is very interesting to my curious side.

' data-srcset=

These are interesting things to see and do! Yerevan packs quite a punch! I’d love to visit this place one day. Looks so cool!

' data-srcset=

It’s my first time to hear about Yerevan but seeing the places to visit there and what to do, I’ll have to add it to my bucket list.

' data-srcset=

Thanks so much for sharing this post! I was never aware that there was a museum dedicated to the Armenian Genocide, or that it was located in Yerevan. I’ll definitely be adding visiting Yerevan to my list! KB

' data-srcset=

Oh my goodness what a stunning place. Armenia was not a destination I had in mind, but clearly should be. I can see myself turning this post into a list and crossing every item out.

' data-srcset=

What an amazing tour this would be! I doubt I’ll ever get the opportunity to travel there, but I enjoyed the virtual tour you provided with the pictures and descriptions. The art exhibitions are especially interesting and the architecture of some of the buildings is stunning! I noticed in the first picture, some of the design in the building’s exterior looks like patchwork quilt blocks!

' data-srcset=

Wow this looks beautiful and what a memorable tour. I hope I eventually get the opportunity to travel here. The architecture is absolutely stunning.

If I am going to Yerevan, I will stay for a month! There are so many things to see and do. We live in the Philippines so the fare is pretty steep going there. So we might as well take advantage of the fact that we are already there to explore this lovely place!

' data-srcset=

This seems like the perfect mix of history and architecture! There are some very powerful places on this list! Visitor have options for fun, relaxation and education! Judging by the pics the weather isn’t too bad too!

' data-srcset=

I’ve never heard of Yerevan! It looks like a beautiful city though. How do you even find out about the place and travel so much. I’m jealous of you..the post is such a thorough study of the place. Love wanderlust!
