Wine in the Pines- Texas State Railroad

This special event, experienced solely onboard the train, is offered in either First Class, the Upper Dome Car, Presidential or even the privately-chartered Caboose. All wines sampled onboard the train, along with other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, will be available for purchase.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad

5 hour train wine tour texas

While the world has largely moved on to bullet trains and high-speed rails, you can still experience the genteel elegance of traveling in an early 20th-century train in Texas. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad offers modern-day tourists a ride inside 1920’s-era coaches, pulled by “Puffy,” the 1896 steam engine, or “Vinny,” a diesel GP7 engine. The Touring class coach is an open-air coach featuring vintage wooden-backed seats, ceiling fans, and heating during the winter, while the first class coach offers posh Victorian-style upholstered seating. Both coaches also include snack bars and restrooms.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad runs three main routes throughout the year. The Cotton Belt Route is a 90-minute trip from the Grapevine Depot on Main Street to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, a National Historic District full of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues. Shortly after the afternoon cattle drive, the train boards for the return leg to Grapevine. On the one-hour “mini excursion” known as the Trinity River Ride, guests are treated to an oral history of Fort Worth as they cross both channels of the Trinity River and pass through lovely Trinity Park. The Grapevine Fun Train, another hour-long journey, travels west from the Grapevine Depot toward Colleyville before reversing back to town.

Whether you want to celebrate a holiday, throw an unforgettable birthday party, or just relax and watch the world go by on one of the few train rides in Texas, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad can help you do it in style.

Wine Trails In Texas To Follow

Wine Trails In Texas To Follow

Did you know there are 14 Wine Trails In Texas that offer wine tastings?

The Texas Hill Country is not the only area in Texas to offer a wine trail. There are at least twelve others all over the Lone Star State. Here at Texas Travel Talk, some of us long to follow all these wine trails in each region. See below the fabulous wine trails in Texas, when they happen throughout the year, the areas, and ticket prices (if any).

Texas Wine Trails

14 Wine Trails In Texas To Follow

From north to south to central and the hill country, and don’t forget the one in the east, these wine trails are open and waiting to serve you. Some are scheduled at certain times of the year, but most are self-guided. You will save money on scheduled tours because, in my experience, most wine tastings are $20-$25 each.

Like Beer? Follow this link to the Beer Festivals in Texas .

North Texas Region

• north texas wine trail.

Full Month of February

Drink North Texas has at least 35 wineries spread out all over the north. That’s a large area, so you may want to take a couple of days to scoop it all out. The North Texas Wine Trail is hosting a Valentine Wine Trail in February (2024 link coming soon).

Area: This area is spread out far and wide. See the website for the entire area and road trip drives.

Tickets: $49

• Way Out Wineries

This is not a scheduled wine trail but rather a path of wineries south of Dallas-Fort Worth to the north of Austin.

Way Out Wineries is a group of eight boutique wineries that are a bit off the beaten track with fabulous scenic by-ways for the road trip and small, quaint Texas towns to meander through. Each winery is family-owned and operated, and you may meet the winemakers behind the counter pouring the wine. They call their wine trails “Road Trips,” but I don’t see any scheduled. They did have a few events last year.

Area: Granbury, Burleson, Hico, Lampasas, Hamilton, and San Saba

• Cross Timbers Wine Trail

Another trail of wineries in North Texas, but this is an association where wineries can join. The Cross Timbers Wine Trail is an association for Texas Grape Farmers and Wine Crafters in the Cross Timbers Eco Region of Texas.

Areas: Muenster, Saint Jo, Valley View, Iowa Park, Alvord, Boyd, Sunset. More wineries in other regions can also be members but might be listed under other wine trails on this list. See website.

• Red River Valley Wine Trail

It’s a small but mighty wine trail in North Texas. There are only three wineries, but I can see growth here. Red River Valley Wine Trail includes Arche, Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard, and 4R Ranch Vineyards and Winery. There are no set dates to follow, but these three wineries are open year-round.

Area: Saint Jo and Muenster

See the North Texas Wineries Map for complete directions.

Piney Woods Region (East Texas Wineries)

• piney woods wine trail.

For a fine wine trail in East Texas, follow the Piney Woods Wine Trail to twenty-two wineries on a self-guided tour. But if you’re in the area on May 12-13, 2023 , you may want to check out the Spring Piney Woods Wine Festival in Lindale, Texas.

Grab the East Texas wineries map here – Piney Woods Wine Trail Map .

Central Region

• stagecoach wine trail (near waco), january 19-31, 2024.

A perfect place to enjoy a glass with friends and family is on the Stagecoach Wine Trail. A purchased ticket to the annual Stagecoach Wine Trail event grants you complimentary wine tastings at all participating wineries (Nine) on the Trail –that’s a $135 value!

People are talking about Country Spring Vineyard, which is on this trail.

You will have thirteen days to enjoy your tastings, starting at the winery of your choice. You’ll have to wait until next January 😁.

Areas: Temple, Salado, Waco, Rogers, Clifton, & Valley Mills

Tickets: Stagecoach Wine Trail ticket information

Texas Hill Country

• texas hill country wine trail.

40+ Wineries participate in each wine trail.

  • October – Texas Wine Month Passport – the entire month of October
  • December – Christmas Wine Affair
  • February  – Wine Lover’s Celebration – 2024
  • April – Wine and Wildflower Journey -2024

More in-depth information on this wine trail is here (with some wineries included) – Texas Hill Country Wine Trail .

• Driftwood Wine Trail

• Dripping With Taste Trail

March 17 to April 17, 2023

Dripping With Taste Trail Includes wineries, breweries, and distillers in Dripping Springs

Tickets: $40/per person

• Fredericksburg Wine Road 290

It’s not a scheduled trail but a path to fantastic wineries and vineyards. Plus, shopping and dining experiences along the way. Start in Johnson City and wind up in Fredericksburg, or vice versa. The map shows 17 wineries along Wine Road 290, but I thought there were more. See Wine Road 290 .

Southeast Region

• sam houston wine trail.

There is no set wine trail event. There are eight wineries in this area to discover. It looks like they had an event in 2021, but nothing since then. The Sam Houston Wine Trail comprises a group of growers and winemakers in East Texas’s beautiful rolling, piney hills. Finding award-winning wines at these tasting rooms is genuinely the best-kept secret in Texas. This would make a great day trip from Houston.

Area: Huntsville, Conroe, New Waverly, Richards, & Montgomery

• Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail

October 1-31, 2023 February 2024 May 2024

The Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail is the ultimate Southeast Texas wine region to discover. Nestled in the rolling hills and wildflowers of Texas countryside, you’ll want to plan for a full day visiting these wineries.

Area: Located between I-45 and U.S. Highway 290 – Plantersville, Navasota, Bryan, College Station,  & Chappell Hill.

Tickets: $30 or $54 for a couple

• Texas Independence Wine Trail

A trail of eight wineries offering award-winning wines and charming tasting rooms in Texas countryside with beautiful vineyards, only 45 minutes from Houston, an hour from Austin, or San Antonio.

There is a printable map of this excellent wine trail throughout the country for a self-guided tour. See Texas Independence Wine & Vine Trail .

Areas: Fayetteville, Carmine, La Grange, Bellville, Seally, Weimer, & Schulenburg.

Take a Wine Train Trip to Burnet, TX with Wedding Oak Winery

September 8, 2023 by Jeff Cope 2 Comments

Boarding the train

There are different modes of transportation to make your trip to a Texas winery. Just like the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles that starred Steve Martin and John Candy, we commonly take automobiles and planes to get to Texas wineries, but you can take a train too!

Wedding Oak Winery at Burnet introduced the Wedding Oak Wine Train last year to a very popular success. This fall the train trip is back.

The Wine Train departs from the Cedar Park Depot (401 E. Whitestone, C-100, Cedar Park, TX 78613) and ends up at Wedding Oak Winery in Burnet. There are three dates for the wine train this year that happens on a Sunday: September 24, October 8, and November 19. The train departs at 11:00 a.m. sharp and returns at 5:00 p.m.

Wedding Oak Winery wine on the train

Passengers will enjoy a two-hour train ride from Cedar Park spanning the South San Gabriel River while enjoying an intimate talk and wine tasting with members of the Wedding Oak Winery family. In Burnet, food and wine is available for purchase during the two-hour layover at the stunning tasting room of Wedding Oak Winery . Complete with two-story views, a patio, and a rooftop terrace, Wedding Oak has made its home in the historic 1888 Badger Building, in the heart of Burnet’s town square. After enjoying food and wine, relax and enjoy the ride as the train returns to the Cedar Park Depot in the afternoon. Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks will be available for purchase on the return trip. Alcohol will not be served and may not be consumed on the return trip.

Wedding Oak Winery Wine Train

The Wine Train is only for ages 21 and up. Your ticket ($79 to $84 each) includes the two-hour train ride and a tasting-sized flight of five wines. Full-sized servings, bottles to-go, and food are available for purchase in the Wedding Oak tasting room during the layover in Burnet only.

Purchase your tickets for the different dates available:

  • Sunday, September 24, 2023
  • Sunday, October 8, 2023
  • Sunday, November 19, 2023

If you want a specific seat, want to sit with another group, or need help booking, please call Cassidy at 512-915-2340 or email [email protected] Tuesday- Friday.

Wine Wednesday: All Aboard! Slow Down & Sip for a While on the Wedding Oak Wine Train

5 hour train wine tour texas

For those looking for a unique wine tasting experience, hop on the six-hour wine train experience in Central Texas, taking passengers from Cedar Park to the Wedding Oak Winery in Burnet.

5 hour train wine tour texas

Hop on the Wedding Oak Wine Train and enjoy a two-hour train ride each way. The spring wine train departs at 11 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. You’ll taste five different wines while enjoying an intimate talk with members of the Wedding Oak family. You’ll appreciate the views of the San Gabriel River and Texas Hill Country while sipping and listening to fun facts.

5 hour train wine tour texas

You may even learn some interesting info from the train expert on the way, like the fact you’ll pass by marble slabs that were used to create the Capital Metro building.

5 hour train wine tour texas

After making your way to Burnet, you’ll get to enjoy a two hour layover at Wedding Oak Winery , and surprise, savor more wine!

5 hour train wine tour texas

In 2012, Wedding Oak opened its doors as San Saba Wine Cellars, but got hit with a cease and desist letter from a wine company with the same name. They changed the name to Wedding Oak, which got its name from a majestic 400 year old oak tree that grows about 2.5 miles northwest from the San Saba winery. The tree is huge, and takes multiple people to wrap arms around it. The stately tree has been the symbolic site for numerous ceremonies and weddings, beginning with Native Americans to early settlers and continuing to this day.

Deep-Rooted History

The winery is located in the historic 1888 badger building, right in the heart of Burnet’s town Square. It was repurposed in 2019, which took about a year, but they were able to keep the original walls and building. The stairs were built out of the original rafters that were on the roof.

5 hour train wine tour texas

There’s plenty of history and transformations behind the building. For one, the original telephone company was actually built upstairs. Second, there used to be a mud wrestling pit by the window in the winery (back when people still enjoyed wet T-shirt contests). They would fill the pit with water to create a mud pit, then bring in actual alligators to wrestle them. Crazy right? Third, the building was also a dance hall for 20 years, so when people in their 60s and 70s come back to the winery they love reminiscing on their good times when it was a teen dance hall.

Wine Flies When You’re Having Fun

5 hour train wine tour texas

Be sure to purchase a bottle and sip slowly in the stunning tasting room, complete with two-story views, and a patio and rooftop terrace. Full size servings, bottles to-go, and food are available for purchase. Speaking of which, the pizza there makes a perfect pairing with the tasty wine. The pizza dough is fermented for days; it was so delicious I wanted seconds! You can also purchase other food from the surrounding area and enjoy it on the patio deck.

5 hour train wine tour texas

Wedding Oak doesn’t produce any of the wine there at the tasting room, but they do produce it at their Wedding Oak location in San Saba. They have three locations in Texas: San Saba, Fredericksburg, and Burnet.

Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are available for purchase on the return trip. Alcohol will not be served and may not be consumed on the return trip for safety reasons.

Upcoming Events

The Wine Train runs every month  – usually the last Sunday of the month – a lthough that is subject to change. Sometimes they’ll skip some summer months when it gets too hot. The air conditioning on these vintage train cars can’t always keep up with the heat. Be sure to follow their events page here .

5 hour train wine tour texas

Christmas time is super exciting! There is no wine train since they do the “Polar Express”. It’s super cute during Christmas time and the kids love it. You’ll see the littles in their pajamas holding onto their teddy bears waiting to get on the train. Other special events are done with the train, such as fundraisers and even a speakeasy night on the train. How fun does that sound?

The Wedding Oak Wine Train is one of those experiences you should try at least once in your life. It’s perfect to catch up with old friends while sipping on some tasty wine, learning the history behind it, and taking in views of the South San Gabriel River and Texas Hill Country. The train allows you to just slow down and sip for a while. This would be great for celebrations, such as a birthday, pre-bachelorette party, or even just everyday day-drinking for Sunday Funday!

I love to ride trains. My great-grandparents saw travel evolve from horse-drawn carriages to electric street cars, urban subways, and passenger trains.

Today, we seek fast travel by jet or a sleek car, but what about turning back the clock to railroad transit and passenger trains? There is something about the golden age of train travel that’s fun for all ages. It’s a time to slow down, relax, and let the landscape flow past us. Let’s explore train rides in Texas, great fun for the whole family. All aboard!

5 Epic Train Rides In Texas for an Amazing Experience

1. palestine to rusk, texas state railroad.

Step aboard a refurbished train car at the Texas State Railroad and feel like you have stepped back in time 100 years, where time slows down and tensions disappear. Relax and enjoy a 4-hour roundtrip train excursion from Palestine to Rusk and back, with vintage steam and diesel locomotives gliding through the piney woods of East Texas as the fall leaves begin to turn shades of golds, oranges, yellows, and reds.

At the depot, learn about the railroad communities, savor a bite to eat with family at the Rusk Mail Car Cafe, and shop the gifts and keepsakes at Roundhouse 1909 in Palestine. Ride comfortably, enjoy a historical narrative, meet friendly and entertaining staff, and sample food and adult beverages on your journey. The four-hour train ride breaks down to a 1.5-hour 25-mile trip to the destination depot, a one-hour lunchtime, and a 1.5-hour return trip.

In October, the Pumpkin Patch Express leaves from Rusk, a 30-minute round trip train ride, including hayrides, spooky music, a bounce house, concessions, and trick-or-treating on Trick or Treat Street. Each child picks out a pumpkin to take home for carving. Fall is a fabulous time to take a train trip through the U.S .

Make reservations now for the Polar Express for November and December. The Presidential Class car seating is limited where a ride with Santa, keepsake Polar Express mugs, hot chocolate, and cookies make for a magical experience.

Camping facilities at the Rusk Campground offer a stay onsite at a historic railroad, with access to depot amenities including lunch, gift shop, and movie theater access on train departure days. Movies filmed on the Texas State Railroad are featured, with stars like Denzel Washington, George Clooney, John Goodman, and Sam Elliot.

This was definitely one of my favorite U.S. train rides .

2. Cedar Park To Burnet

Austin steam train association.

All aboard! Take the historic 6-hour, 66-mile roundtrip Hill Country Flyer from Cedar Park, north of Austin, and just east of Lake Travis, to Burnet with a brief layover there for lunch and shopping. There are at least four classes of service : excursion coach, first-class coach, first-class lounge, and adults-only first-class lounge.

The Bertram Flyer is a shorter trip, traveling from Cedar Park to Bertram, with a 15-minute layover in Bertram and enough time to tour the 1912 train depot there. The train runs from March through November on Saturdays and Sundays.

The North Pole Flyer 2021 with Santa leaves from Bertram and is a 2-hour roundtrip. Arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure and be in your seat no later than 10 minutes before the train leaves. Read the Terms and Conditions about no refunds and restrictions.

Enjoy hot chocolate and the elf’s reading of the North Pole Flyer book.

Read about the vintage train cars here .

Travel from Main Street Station in Grapevine to the Fort Worth Stockyards on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad while relaxing in air-conditioned Victorian train cars.

See the schedule for special events like Murder Mystery Trains and reserved group events.

Wear your costume on the Witches Brew Train on October 29, 2021, which features hors d’oeuvres and local draft brew served in a souvenir mug. Take time to tour the Haunted Depot. Wear your Halloween costume on the Trick ‘R Treat Trains on October 30 and enjoy this 1-hour excursion.

Make your reservations now for the hour-long North Pole Express November through December, presented by Great Wolf Lodge and Trinity Metro TEXRail. Wear your Christmas pajamas while you take a Christmas train journey to Santa’s Workshop, a family-friendly trip. The After Christmas Trains run December 26 through 30, 2021, on holiday-decorated coaches as you continue the Christmas spirit.

In April, ride The Jazz Wine Train aboard the 1920s Victorian coaches with soulful jazz entertainment while sipping great Grapevine wine. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres plus a dessert trio box. Sip wine from several winery tasting rooms from a souvenir wine glass.

Bring the little ones for a Day Out With Thomas , presented by Mattel. Ride the train with the classic storybook engine and have fun with “trains, games & miles of smiles!”

Mattel and the Museum of the American Railroad helped sponsor this event. I took my grandchildren for a train ride right after Christmas on the Grapevine Railroad Stockyards Trinity River Excursion . We traveled from the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, through Trinity Park to the 8th Avenue historic railyard, then returned to the stockyards.

You’ll see the Great Train Heist, with greedy outlaws and the railroad detectives close behind.

Enjoy the Christmas Express Train narrated day and evening tours with Christmas vignettes along the beautiful Big Cypress Bayou River. The New Year’s Express features beverages, noisemakers, and with the ball drop and five authentic cannons firing dramatic “dragons’ breath.”

Lee will take you along Big Cypress Bayou, through the piney woods, where you will view a Confederate Powder Magazine and travel to the site of one of the oldest historical towns in Texas. Ride the Historic Jefferson Railway’s famous Ghost Train to experience the haunts of the Civil War.

There are more attractions to enjoy en route than we could ever list and is one of the best train trips in Texas.

Along the way, you will Marvel at the gorgeous views of big cities, like the cosmopolitan Dallas, and Austin, before you arrive in popular San Antonio.

Amtrak’s Texas Eagle consists of double-deck Superliner cars and is staffed with a crew dedicated to your comfort. Anyone booking a private room in a sleeper car gets additional perks like complimentary meals and lounge access.
