water bottles for oaxaca mexico with built in filter

While some people drink Huatulco tap water, I don’t. As someone who’s lived in Mexico since 2018, and seen countless people get violently stomach-sick, I don’t take any chances with getting sick in Mexico .

To be as safe as possible, get one of these Water-To-Go Bottles that have a built-in, three-stage water filter. I use this bottle myself, and have partnered with this company to offer 15% OFF when you use code SOLO15.

🚗 renting a Car in Huatulco Mexico

As one of the safest cities in Mexico and safest beach towns in Mexico , you’ll be safe while driving in Huatulco Mexico. The streets are well-maintained, and people are relatively calm drivers.

When it comes to Mexico rental cars, I recommend and also use Discover Cars . Their search tool checks both international companies and local Mexican companies so you get the best rates.

🚌 Public Transportation in Huatulco Mexico

taxi in huatulco oaxaca mexico

Huatulco public transportation is frankly, not great and not readily available.

Also, unlike taxis, don’t expect bus drivers to speak English, so make sure you have at least basic Spanish to navigate Huatulco public transportation. Note: Not all taxi drivers speak English, but you have a better chance.

Also, if you do want to use public transport in Huatulco, make sure you have change and small bills to pay the driver — as many won’t make change for large bills.

Since I barely used the public transportation and buses in Huatulco, I’ll refer you to the best guide I’ve seen on the subject, How to Travel in Huatulco . It was written by Shev, one of my fellow Mexico bloggers .

What’s the best time to visit Huatulco Mexico?

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Huatulco is from November to March .

beautiful blue water in a bay and beach cove in the small beach town of Bahias de Huatulco, Mexico, in Oaxaca state, a safe solo Mexico travel destination in southern Mexico on the Pacific Ocean

You’ll have no rain (or very little), low humidity, and no mosquitoes (or very few) in these months.

With perfect weather, however, comes larger crowds and higher price tags. To avoid the large crowds and higher-than-average prices, skip the weeks of Christmas , New Year’s, Spring Break and Semana Santa (Holy Week).

🌡️ Huatulco Weather: Yearly Averages

huatulco mexico weather chart

If you’re traveling to Huatulco on a budget, you’ll want to visit during the slow summer season.

For the best value, but still nice weather, plan your visit during what’s called the “shoulder season,” a magical time right in-between the high season and low season in Huatulco.

  • Huatulco Busy Season: November to March
  • Huatulco Slow Season: May to September
  • Huatulco Shoulder Season: October and April
  • Huatulco Rainy Season: April to September
  • Huatulco Dry Season: October to March

What’s the best time to see whales in Huatulco?

The Huatulco whale season runs from about November to April — but the best time to see them is from mid-December to March.

whale breaching in huatulco mexico, oaxaca state

During this time, you can take this Huatulco boat tour and venture into the Pacific Coast to (hopefully 🤞) see everything from Pacific gray whales and orcas (killer whales) to humpback whales.

Is Huatulco worth visiting?

Yes — Huatulco Mexico is perfect for those who want to venture slightly off the beaten path in Mexico, but still enjoy resort amenities, beaches and modern conveniences.

It has great resorts, similar to Cancun , Cabo and Puerto Vallarta , but without the large crowds. Huatulco also has great tourism infrastructure, and is safe for tourists.

I recommend Huatulco for those who want to enjoy the beaches, nature and relaxation. It’s great for daytime activities, but limited in its nightlife.

There are some bars in nearby La Crucecita (AKA downtown Huatulco Mexico), but even the bars at these best Huatulco resorts often close by 10pm.

Final Thoughts: Best Huatulco Boat Tours

If you’re looking for a short boat ride or a full day guided trip, a Huatulco party boat experience or a Huatulco sunset cruise, these Huatulco Oaxaca tours will provide some unforgettable memories.

You will have no trouble booking a tour from your resort. That is the most convenient way to do it. You may pay a bit more, but you will be sure of what you are getting. The 7 bays used to go to San Agustin which has the best snorkeling, but I hear they don't go there now. That is something to ask about. The one we went on a few years ago went to San Agustin and stopped at one other beach to snorkel also. They stop at a restaurant for lunch -- you buy your own. Here is a link that gives you a bit of info on one of the tours. It shows a small boat, but in tourist season I think most tours are on a larger catamaran.

I recommend Hurricane Divers. I believe their website states the price. They went to San Agustin when we went with them 2 years ago. Will stop at other spots along the way if you want. Best part is the homemade lunch by Pauline on your own deserted beach. Wonderful!

Thanks, I did email them today. I read somewhere that it might be best to wait till we get there and go down to the marina, there was someone that had a great tour but they also fished and caught a bunch of tuna, just thought that would be fun to do it all in one excursion

A friend got back on Christmas day and the three of them booked a trip at the Santa Cruz marina with a captain Coco and said it was around 100 USD for the day stopping at several stops to snorkel.

We used Tony Lopaz Lopaz for the seven bay tour, it was $400 for six of us and it was private and enjoyable. He let us decide how long we wanted to stay at each bay. His helpers dove with us and at couple of bays they caught some puffer fish and we watched as they expanded. He was hanging out at the Barceló Hotel

$100 sounds better then $400.

Highly recommend Tiko and his comfy cabin cruiser with a head, the Marisol.. Fishing, whales, dolphins , turtles, private beaches for private snorkel lessons with lots of sea creatures, then to St. Augustin for more snorkeling and cooking your catch to your order. Lots of tunes and bevvies on the boat...More personalized for us!! Great guy and knows great English if that matters!!

There is a significant difference in atmosphere between the private boat option and the big catamaran. The catamaran is more party style with drinking and lots of people, and much less expensive. The private boat is more laid back and quiet, and not so inexpensive. So, it kind of depends on what you are looking for...

Up until this year the standard rate for a "panga" (open, canopied boat) to visit the bays was generally $50 an hour. Since gas prices have gone through the roof you should expect those prices to rise as well. As tuna aren't found close to shore, you will not be likely to catch them on a bay tour. If you want to see the bays on a large catamaran with 100 other people and loud music, that's available. If you want to do it in a panga that will stop at St Augustin (the last bay) or Maguey for lunch at a beachside restaurant, that's also available. Hurricane Divers with excellent gear, safety equipment, bilingual staff and a larger boat, will stop at a deserted beach for a gourmet picnic. If you choose to go with them, you should book in advance because they tend to fill up quickly. Ultimately, you'll get what you pay for.
