REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

“Absolutely EVERYTHING about this trip was perfect: itinerary, food, lodgings, trip leaders, educational opportunities. A perfect example of why Wilderness Travel will always be our first choice when planning adventures.”
“We were taught so much beyond the usual viewpoint given to a tourist that I felt I had a much deeper understanding of the culture and history than I would have if traveling with a different company.”
“An incredible variety of activities was packed into the trip, yet we never felt rushed. It would be impossible to do what we did in the same period of time without the expertise of WT guides.”
“I have dreamed of taking this trip for years. Truly this journey exceeded my expectations on all fronts. The wildlife, terrain, people, staff and fellow trip mates made it an adventure to always treasure. I feel blessed and fortunate. Thank you Wilderness Travel. You have my complete confidence.”
“Because of our Trek Leader’s vast experience in the area, we used several trails that aren’t known to many trekkers and we were invited into Sherpa homes, which was wonderful. I had been dreaming of this trip for 30 years and now those dreams are fulfilled.”
“Couldn’t have asked for a more interesting trip and two outstanding guides, accommodations, and meals. This was our fourth trip with Wilderness Travel and one of the best (although we say that about every trip we have been on!)”
“I love Wilderness Travel! You select the best guides, a variety of special places to stay, the food is always plentiful and cultural, and the adventure is top drawer! Thank you for offering trips that expand one’s knowledge of other cultures while making it enjoyable and fun.”
“We are still on a high a month after the trip, having had wonderful guides, camp crew, co-travelers, and the right mix of comfort and authentic experience.”
“WOW! This was an extraordinary trip. It was meticulously planned, but allowed for many spontaneous interactions and delightful surprises. Another WT success story.”
“This was my first trip to India and I cannot imagine a better introduction. Because of the care with which the trip had been planned and organized, I was able to relax, enjoy, and try to fully absorb the experience without spending even a moment concerned about the quotidian details of the trip. What a luxury.”
“Everyone was so thorough and helpful. It was like being whisked around on a magic carpet. Doors opened, every wish fulfilled, amazing service!”
“It was an indescribable, life-affirming experience that I will always cherish. In particular, I wanted to commend your selection of Trip Leaders. Their skill, thoughtfulness, and dedication made the entire trip seem effortless even though the challenge was great.”

Hiking & Trekking

adventure trips hiking

  • Inca Trail tours
  • Kilimanjaro

Why? Because it’s there.

Opportunities for challenging hikes and pleasant strolls are scattered all over this planet; you just need to know where to find them. We do. Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp, Patagonia, and the Inca Trail are out there, waiting for you to walk all over them. We’re proud of our record of successful ascents (over 92% of our travellers make it to the top of Kili, depending on the route), but it’s our CEOs and local guides that make the journey itself as memorable as the summit. And if you’re not into big climbs, don’t sweat it; we’ve got loads of lower-impact walks and iconic treks you’ll love, too.

Where can I go?

Kilimanjaro trekking

Hiking & trekking faq, will the altitude affect us.

In the higher altitudes, the air is thinner than you would normally find in the atmosphere at sea level, where most of us live. Although everyone will experience the altitude differently and to varying degrees, slow and steady is always the order of the day. The more time you give yourself to acclimatize to high-altitude environments, the easier your climb will be.

What will we eat?

To get you going every day, you’ll need lots of energy, and our cooks make sure there’s plenty of healthy, quality food at hand. Our team of porters carries all the supplies where necessary, including fresh produce. Meals consist of local and international cuisine, and while special requests can almost always be accommodated, it is wise to inform us in advance.

Will I have to share my accommodation?

Unless you book the “My Own Room/Tent” option, yes, you’ll be bunking with someone else. Space on the mountains and trails is at a premium, so be prepared to share your lodgings with trekkers who aren’t travelling with your group and possibly members of the opposite sex. Mountain accommodations usually feature shared toilets and washing facilities.

Where will we sleep?

It depends! Some treks involve full-service camping experiences where all the equipment is provided, including sleeping mats (all you need to bring is your sleeping bag and pillow). Tents are always of high quality and vary according to the specific environmental conditions of your chosen trek. Other treks involve mountain huts with single beds.

Who carries the gear?

On the majority of our trips, our expert staff carries all the supplies and equipment (including food for hearty, delicious meals). All you have to do is carry your own stuff, stay hydrated, and focus on is putting one foot in front of the other. On some of the tougher hikes, you will need to carry all your gear for some periods. But the views and surroundings will be worth it.

What else will we do?

Few experiences open up the heart, lungs, and mind quite like hiking in a new place. When you go with us, you won’t just climb the mountain; you’ll meet the people who live on and around it and come away with a greater sense of alpine life. On several of our treks, we've allowed free days for you to experience the best of the culture of the country you are visiting. There's more to most places than just the hiking!

Who’s leading the way?

Our guides, sherpas and porters have all hiked their respective hills for years, and they’re well-versed in all the tricks you need to master them. They’ll help you with your pack, keep you motivated, and coax you through the rougher spots with care and compassion.

I’ve never trekked before. Is that a problem?

You don’t have to be an elite endurance athlete to enjoy a day’s exercise abroad. Many of our Active itineraries are built for the first-time active traveller and offer a more relaxed – but still active – experience. You don’t have to be a high-endurance athlete, just someone who’s in good, healthy shape. And if you’re unsure whether a trek is right for you, simply ask us and we’ll get you sorted out.

Tour Scoop

9 Best Travel Companies for Walking Tours and Hiking Tours in 2024

Enjoy some of the world's most beautiful landscapes at the speed of your own two feet..

Beth Luberecki

Review: EF Go Ahead’s Food & Wine: Piedmont & Tuscany with America’s Test Kitchen

There’s something extra special about seeing someplace on foot the way you do on a walking tour, hiking tour, or guided trek. Maybe it’s the slower pace and the ability to actually admire sights you might just zip by in a car, bus, or train. Maybe it’s the easy opportunity for connections and conversations with local people. Or maybe it’s being out in the fresh air, enjoying and appreciating the natural setting of the location you’re visiting.

It’s probably some combination of all three that make walking tours, trekking tours, and hiking tours a popular way to travel. Whether you prefer an easygoing amble, a moderate hike, or a challenging summit, there are some great foot-fueled tours from hiking tour companies that explore famous locales and off-the-beaten-path spots all over the world. Here are my picks for the nine best travel companies offering walking tours and guided hiking trips.

more information about usa hiking vacations

What is a hiking vacation.

A hiking vacation or multi-day hiking tour can naturally take many different forms, but for most travelers it’s a trip to a new or return destination to hike, explore, learn and discover. Some of the most popular destinations in the U.S.A. for a hiking vacation are:

  • Desert Southwest: Grand Canyon, Southern Utah, Sedona, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Capitol Reef, Paria Canyon, and more
  • Sierra Nevadas Mountains: Yosemite, Eastern Sierras, Sequoia-Kings Canyon and more
  • Pacific Northwest: Mountain Rainier, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park and more
  • Rocky Mountains: Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park and more
  • Appalachia: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains and more

camp or accommodations?

Many travelers choose to camp on hiking vacations in the U.S., but staying in accommodations can also be a great option, without necessarily detracting from the level of adventure of a multi-day hiking tour. Accommodations in the U.S. normally are hotels and lodges, with an outside of chance of finding yurt accommodations (semi-permanent, framed, soft-sided structures).

BACKPACKING OR TREKKING?

  • Learn from local experts – Wildland Trekking guides are very knowledgeable about the areas where we work. • Emergency and evacuation systems are in place in case they are needed.

NATIONAL PARKS, STATE PARKS, UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE AND BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT

Generally speaking, your vaction will most likely be to one or more national parks , state parks , United States Forest Service (USFS) lands, or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Most visitors will head to national parks, but the other areas should not be overlooked. Some of the most amazing hiking vacations in the USA are on USFS and BLM lands. A basic breakdown of each, and their differences, is provided here:

  • National Parks: these are the big name destinations like Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains…etc. They are highly regulated, amazingly well maintained wild refuges throughout the United States. Any overnight camping and backpacking will require permits; dogs are not allowed; and advanced planning is highly recommended.
  • State Parks: these lands are often much smaller than the national parks (like less than 1% the size on average), but there are some wonderful state parks that offer fantastic trekking experiences. For example, the Northern California coast is mostly comprised of state parks that offer stunning views and excellent coastal hiking.
  • USFS Lands: the Western USA is made up of millions of square miles of USFS lands, and they are some of the most breathtaking and expansive wilderness left in the USA and the world. These areas often do not require permits and are more lightly regulated than the national parks. Dogs are allowed on most USFS lands.
  • BLM: these lands are sometimes amazing, sometimes not, sometimes pristine, sometimes riddled with roads, mines and/or other extractive industry activity like drilling. These lands are the least regulated and least visited, which means they can be home to some surprisingly amazing secret gem areas. Dogs are allowed.

walking in the desert

Many trekking vacations in the USA will be in the Southwestern part of the country, where desert ecosystems prevail. This region is home to the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Great Basin deserts. Characterized by low levels of precipitation, hot summer temperatures and mild winter temperatures, deserts can make for wonderful winter hiking vacations. They can also be great in the spring and fall. It’s recommended to avoid deserts in the summer months unless you’re well prepared for the high temperatures and dry conditions. Also, any time you’re walking in the desert (but especially if it’s in the summer), it’s imperative to be aware of common medical conditions such as heat stroke and hyponatremia , and how to avoid them.

walking in the mountains

The USA is home to a staggering number of different mountain ranges, from the Rocky Mountains to the Sierras, Appalachians, Cascades, Allegheny’s, Smokies, Asheville Area , White Mountains…etc. And within one major range, like the Rocky Muntains, there are subranges like the San Juans, Sangre de Christos, Missions, Crazies, Flat Tops , Wind Rivers…etc. And many of America’s most famous national parks are in the mountains, like Yellowstone, Yosemite, Mount Rainier, Rocky Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains and many others.

Generally speaking, walking in the mountains is best in the late spring, summer and fall months. Often the early spring is still quite snowy in the mountains, and snow begins to fall again usually in mid to late fall. The summer months are prime time for most mountain visits. Be aware of afternoon thunderstorms and not getting caught out in the open (such as above treeline) if thunderstorms roll in. And be prepared for sudden and extreme weather shifts – a day in the mountains can begin warm and clear and within a couple hours be dark, cold, windy and rainy.

walking on the coasts

Of course the coasts, both west and east, offer incredible trekking opportunities. With national parks like Olympic National Park and Acadia National Park in the east, hugging the coasts, there are fantastic on-foot adventures to be had. When hiking on the coasts, be aware of tides and slippery, treacherous sections of walking. Being caught in a tidal zone when the tide roles back in can be a mistake you’ll never have a chance of repeating, so plan ahead, talk to experts, or join guided hikes with expert trip leaders.

Backpacking vs Hiking: Choosing a Trail Adventure

Are you curious about the definitions of backpacking vs hiking and if they are totally different things?

Well, you’re definitely not the only one! It’s a very common question and you’re in the right place to find all the answers you need to help demystify the differences.

In this blog post, I will help you discover the intriguing disparities between backpacking and hiking. This is the ultimate showdown you’ve been curious about but are afraid to ask about!

As someone with over 30 years of hiking experience and countless backpacking trips under my belt, I’m here to share my knowledge and guide you on this exciting journey.

I’ll help you navigate the differences between backpacking and hiking, making both approachable and encouraging for you to plan your first adventure. Get ready to lace up your boots or strap on that backpack, as we delve into the world of outdoor exploration together!

My husband and I are very experienced hikers and backpackers and have been taking our kids on long hikes and camping trips since they were infants. Backpacking trips are a normal part of their childhood.

Now, at ages 9 and 12, they tolerate and really enjoy an exciting 10-mile hike. We all do! As long as I pack great day hike food , they’re in! It’s a really incredible feeling to explore like this as a family and experience the adrenaline, good fatigue, and the sense of accomplishment from a hike together.

Backpacking vs Hiking : What is the Difference?

Understanding the differences between backpacking and hiking is valuable in determining the most suitable adventure for you. That way you can plan your trip effectively and confidently!

🏕 BACKPACKING involves carrying a backpack with camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc), allowing for multi-day trips immersed in the outdoors, covering more distance. Backpacking doesn’t always take place on an established trail.

🥾 HIKING typically entails tackling a specific day hike trail up a mountain or through the woods with lighter loads in a small backpack, focusing on exploring nature and enjoying scenic views.

The distinctions lie in factors like the trip duration, gear requirements, and level of self-sufficiency. By understanding these key differences you can make informed decisions aligned with your preferences and goals!

So, whether you crave the challenge of extended expeditions or seek the joy of short trips, unraveling the disparities between backpacking and hiking will empower you to explore in a way that resonates with your adventurous spirit.

What is Backpacking?

Backpacking means carrying a larger backpack containing essential gear and supplies for self-supported travel and at least one overnight stay, camping away from a parked car or trailhead.

It typically entails multiple days, allowing hikers to immerse themselves in a wilderness area and explore remote or less accessible areas.

Backpackers often hike long distances each day, traversing diverse terrains while carrying their food, cooking equipment, shelter, extra clothes, and other necessities on their backs.

This self-sufficiency and independence make backpacking a rewarding, challenging, adventurous, and immersive experience!

I fell in love with backpacking at a young age because it offers opportunities for quiet solitude, connection with nature, and the chance to explore and discover the hidden gems of the wilderness away from crowds.

Backpacking can range from leisurely overnight trips to more challenging and strenuous expeditions, making it a versatile activity for enthusiastic nature-loving people like myself!

What is Hiking?

Hiking involves taking a long walk or trekking on well-maintained trails trails, natural paths, or designated routes. It typically refers to day trips or shorter distances, although a day hike can be 12 miles or 10-12 hours of trail time for those fit enough to take on the challenge.

Hiking trails can vary in difficulty, from very easy trails without much elevation gain and well-maintained paths to more challenging, steep, and rougher terrain that require physical endurance and agility.

It can be an intense activity with winding trails, extreme elevation gains, and captivating landscapes, often introducing adventurers to the art of navigating switchbacks , where the trail gracefully zigzags up steep slopes, allowing for a gradual ascent and minimizing the strain on one’s legs and stamina.

Unlike backpacking, day hiking doesn’t involve carrying extensive camping gear or supplies for overnight stays. However, if you are anything like my husband, you may enjoy carrying a Crazy Creek Chair for enjoying the perfect cup of trailside coffee, especially on cooler days.

Hiking allows individuals to take a break from daily life, explore, relax, reconnect with the natural world, enjoy scenic views, and engage in rewarding physical activity.

How to Prepare for Hiking and Backpacking

Start with hiking and move on to backpacking! Once you have successfully completed a handful of hikes of varying distances, then start planning for an overnight backpacking trip.

After that, you can move on to a 3-5 day backpacking trip . Eventually, you may even be interested in backpacking for several weeks at a time!

  • Research and Choose Suitable Trails : Start by researching hiking trails in your area that are suitable for beginners. Look for trails with shorter distances (perhaps 3-5 miles), well-marked paths, and manageable elevation gains. Consider factors such as scenery, difficulty level, and accessibility.
  • Gear and Equipment : Invest in essential hiking gear and equipment. These should include sturdy hiking shoes or hiking boots. Check out this list of stylish hiking books with red laces ! In addition add trekking poles, moisture-wicking clothing, a backpack, a water bottle, a map or GPS device, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions.
  • Physical Conditioning : Build your endurance and strength through regular exercise. Engage in activities such as walking, hiking on local trails, or cardiovascular exercises to improve your overall fitness level. Start with shorter hikes and gradually increase the distance and difficulty.
  • Safety Precautions : Prioritize safety by informing someone about your hiking plans, including the trail you intend to hike and your estimated return time. Check weather conditions before heading out and be prepared for unexpected changes. Carry a first aid kit and know how to use it!
  • Pack Essential Supplies : Pack necessary supplies for your hike or backpacking trip, such as plenty of water, energy-rich snacks and/or dehydrated meals, a trail map or guidebook, a compass, a headlamp, a multi-tool, and a lightweight rain jacket. Consider carrying a whistle for emergencies.

Remember, as a beginner, it’s important to start with shorter and less challenging hikes and gradually progress to more demanding trails as your skills and confidence grow.

✔️ Plan and Prepare : In order to make the most of your time in the wilderness, it’s important to plan ahead and prepare yourself for any potential hazards or unexpected developments.

  • This involves researching weather conditions, packing a variety of supplies and equipment, and understanding basic safety protocols.
  • Research the trail and its difficulty level, and create a detailed itinerary, including campsite locations, water sources, and emergency exit points.
  • Check your gear and ensure it’s suitable for the terrain and weather.

✔️ Pack Light and Smart: Keep your backpack as light as possible to reduce strain and fatigue.

  • Prioritize essential items such as a tent, sleeping bag, food, water, appropriate clothing, navigation tools (map, compass, or GPS), a first aid kit, and emergency supplies.
  • Opt for lightweight and compact gear whenever possible. Pack high-energy, lightweight food that requires minimal preparation.
  • Don’t forget to bring a water filter or purifier to treat water from natural sources.

✔️ Practice Leave No Trace: Respect and preserve the natural environment by practicing Leave No Trace principles and Zero Waste Camping .

  • Minimize your impact on the trail and campsites by following guidelines such as packing out all trash , burying human waste properly, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife.
  • Leave the area as you found it to ensure its beauty and ecological balance for future hikers.

Terms Related to Hiking and Backpacking

SECTION HIKER : A section hiker completes a long-distance trail in sections over an extended period of time, rather than hiking it all at once. Section hikers tend to make a commitment to complete an entire trail over multiple trips or years.

THRU HIKER : A thru-hiker is someone who completes an entire long-distance trail in one continuous journey, without breaking it up into sections. Thru-Hiking is completing the entire trail from start to finish without leaving the trail for an extended period. It can take days, weeks, or months.

ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKING : Ultralight backpackers focus on minimizing the weight of their gear and pack as much as possible, often utilizing lightweight equipment and strategies to reduce their load. This allows them to hike longer distances with less strain.

FASTPACKING: Fastpacking combines elements of backpacking and trail running. It involves traveling light and covering long distances in a shorter time frame, often running or jogging sections of the trail while carrying a minimal pack.

FOURTEENER : A term used in the United States to describe mountains with an elevation of 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) or higher. It is commonly used in Colorado, where there are numerous popular fourteeners to hike and climb.

SHERPA : Originally referring to an ethnic group in the Himalayas, the term “Sherpa” has been adopted in mountaineering and trekking to describe local guides or porters who assist climbers or trekkers in carrying gear, setting up camps, and navigating challenging terrain. Sherpas are the necessary guides for the Everest base camp trek.

THRU-HIKER BUBBLE : Refers to a phenomenon on long-distance trails like the Pacific Crest Trail, where a large group of hikers starts around the same time and progresses along the trail at a similar pace. This creates a “bubble” of hikers who often interact and camp together, forming a temporary hiking community.

CAIRN : A cairn is a pile of rocks or stones often used as trail markers in areas where the trail may be difficult to follow. Hikers and backpackers construct cairns to help others navigate the route.

BLUE BLAZE : In the Appalachian Trail community, a “blue blaze” refers to a side trail or marker with blue paint that veers off from the main white-blazed Appalachian Trail. Blue blazes often lead to water sources, viewpoints, or nearby attractions.

FAQs: Hiking vs Backpacking

While pondering the differences between backpacking and hiking I have answers to some common questions!

How far can a beginner backpacker hike in a day?

The distance a beginner backpacker can hike in a day varies depending on factors such as fitness level, terrain difficulty, pack weight, and overall experience, but a reasonable starting range is typically around 5 to 10 miles (8 to 16 kilometers) per day.

It’s important for beginners to start with shorter distances and gradually increase their mileage to long-distance hikes as they build stamina and confidence.

What is the difference between hiking and backpacking?

Hiking focuses on shorter trips of a few hours or a full day. Backpacking takes you further out into nature with longer hikes, trails, and trips that can last several days, weeks, or even months. Backpacking typically involves a commitment to multiple days away in a more remote location.

How much harder is backpacking than hiking?

The difficulty of backpacking and hiking can vary greatly depending on the specific trail, weather conditions, your level of fitness, and prior experience. It’s essential to choose routes and durations that align with your physical ability and gradually challenge yourself as you gain more experience and confidence.

Does backpacking mean hiking?

Yes, backpacking is a type of hiking that involves carrying all necessary gear in a backpack for multi-day trips. Hiking is the activity of walking in natural environments for leisure, exercise, or exploration purposes. Backpacking specifically emphasizes the aspect of carrying a backpack with overnight camping gear.

Is 40 too old to go backpacking?

No, 40 is not too old to go backpacking! I sure hope not because at the time of writing this article, I am 45 years old! Age is DEFINITELY not a limiting factor for enjoying backpacking or any outdoor activity.

Many people in their 40s and beyond continue to engage in backpacking and find it rewarding and fulfilling. It’s important to assess your fitness level, consider any medical considerations, and plan and prepare accordingly, but age itself should not discourage you from pursuing backpacking if you have the desire and readiness to do so.

The Bottom Line: Hiking vs Backpacking

Backpacking and hiking can be incredibly rewarding activities, especially for new trail explorers full of fresh enthusiasm! They are the best way to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and to enjoy nature.

Whether you’re looking to challenge yourself on a multi-day backpacking trip or take it easy with a shorter day hike, there are plenty of outdoor adventures that await you.

Hiking to the Monastery was the unexpected highlight of my trip to Jordan

a sandstone coloured building carved into mountain rock

I almost missed out seeing one of Petra’s most impressive monuments, but the allure of adventure and the encouragement of my friend and Intrepid group pushed me to take on the challenge.

In the months leading up to our Explore Jordan trip, my friend Carolyn and I exchanged a lot of messages about Petra. Jordan’s ancient city is what had inspired us to book a visit to this country in the first place, and with every stunning photo shared the countdown got even more exciting.

One day she texted me a link labelled Hiking the Monastery .

Don’t you mean the Treasury? I thought, picturing Petra’s most famous monument. No, this was another, even bigger temple we could visit at Petra.

‘Let’s do it!’ she enthused. When I read one must climb up 800 uneven steps to see it, I wasn’t sure. I love to hike, but I’m also aware of my physical limitations – I’m slow, and tire easier than most – and I knew our two days in Petra were already going to involve hours of walking. I put the optional trek in my trip’s “maybe” column. But I’m so glad it didn’t stay there.

Hiking to the Monastery was all the talk among our group.

Hiking to the Monastery at Petra became a highlight of my whole trip. It’s also something I would never have experienced if I wasn’t on a group tour. I now hope to inspire others who don’t yet know about the Monastery hike or are on the fence to give it a shot.

What is the Monastery?

The Monastery is the largest monument in Petra Archeological Park.

One of many impressive buildings carved right out of the sandstone by the Nabateans, it dates back to between the first and second centuries and was most likely used for religious purposes. Its ornate facade is 45 metres high by 50 metres wide – almost twice as wide as the more famous and more easily accessed Treasury. But you could be forgiven for spending all day at Petra and missing it. It’s high in the hills and the trailhead is hidden at the very end of a four-kilometre walk from Petra’s entrance.

Still, hiking to the Monastery was all the talk among our group.

After arriving at Petra, our group of 12 had spent a truly incredible afternoon visiting the site with our local leader, Yazan, who gave us tips on all the other things to do after marvelling at the Treasury during our free day.

I had selected Explore Jordan from the many Intrepid tours of this country because of that extra free day at Petra to choose your own adventure and was especially keen to return for the candlelit Petra by Night experience the next evening.

So, after a delicious dinner at a traditional Jordanian restaurant (where we watched chefs prepare the sweet treat knafa , a very cool bonus) the group discussed our individual plans for that next day.

I was the only one not planning on trekking to the Monastery.

adventure trips hiking

After walking 20,000 steps that day, I already felt tapped out. Did I really want to get up early to hike a trail requiring the most effort? Especially now that I knew at my pace it would be at least an hour walk just to make my way back through the grounds to the trailhead? Plus, knowing that I planned to return later for Petra by Night? I know that if I’d been alone, I would have bowed out, happy to sleep in and spend my afternoon in the shade drinking tea and writing postcards at the cafe in front of the Treasury.

Carolyn was more than happy to hike on her own. Still, now I had second thoughts. We came to experience the wonders of Petra together. And while I wouldn’t say I felt peer pressure, at all, I did get plenty of encouragement from the group. Would I regret being at tomorrow night’s dinner hearing about what a wonderful experience I missed out on?

I decided to give it try. ‘I will simply start walking, and when I get too tired or uncomfortable, I will turn back.’

Slow and steady

Carolyn was insistent we get a very early start, to hit the entrance just as doors opened. In our travels together I’ve come to know her as a most excellent planner, and this was no exception.

The air was cool and fresh, and as we made our way down along the winding stone path between the narrow gorge known as The Siq, I couldn’t believe we had the place to ourselves. Where throngs of visitors had meandered yesterday, we were the only ones taking in this scenery.

True to my plan, I kept walking. Past the treasured Treasury. Past the Royal Tombs, the amphitheatre and Byzantine-era church. We ran into another member of our group who was hiking solo and now we were three on the Monastery trail, starting to climb.

The steps were indeed uneven, but also quite beautiful. Like so much at Petra, they’re an ancient wonder – undulating waves of red, yellow, orange, brown and purple. I seemed to recall someone saying the Monastery hike would take 40 minutes. Hauling myself up I doubted that. But I felt good. The scenery and excellent company (not to mention the regular appearance of cat escorts) made the time passed quickly and pleasantly. Soon I realised I was likely more than halfway. So, I guess I would be climbing to the Monastery now.

A reunion with a view

I was about to mutter my first ‘are we there yet?’ into the void when we turned a corner and spotted several more members of our group.

It seems they had gotten an even earlier start. As we neared the top, they were on their way down. We cheered to our good life choices and celebrated our unexpected meet-up with a group photo. Sweaty, red-faced, out of breath, I didn’t care. I wanted to mark the moment, with the people who had inspired me to be here.

Sweaty, red-faced, out of breath, I didn’t care. I wanted to mark the moment, with the people who had inspired me to be here.

Around the next corner was the main attraction. The trek had taken about an hour from the trailhead – though in that moment I wasn’t counting at all. I was just in awe.

The Monastery was as postcard perfect as, well, the postcards. The three of us wandered around to appreciate it from many angles. For such an amazing place, it did not feel crowded. Just us, a few dozen visitors, and some frolicking goats.

While my friends followed the signs to various “best views in the world” I sat down to rest at the little cafe, where I ordered hot tea prepared the Jordanian way, with cardamom. There, I ran into two more tripmates. They were surprised to see me, since I’d told them I wasn’t doing this hike. I had to admit I did feel pretty proud of myself.

I didn’t even worry that I now had to walk for another couple hours to get back. There was a new spring in my steps. All in, that day I did over 30,000 steps, which might be a personal record.

That night at dinner, instead of envy, I had a story to tell, of how I said I would walk until I needed to stop, but I didn’t stop. Of how I learned Petra is so much more than the Treasury. That an incredible architectural wonder of the ancient world awaits at the top of 800 steps. And that with the right companions, when you get there, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world.

When it comes to putting your best foot forward, a walking pole can be a surprisingly handy addition to your hiking kit. Poles add balance on uneven terrain, take the strain away from your legs and knees and make going up and down hills much easier, so they’re perfect for summer trekking adventures.

Walking poles are designed to be used as a pair, with one in each hand, to support the weight of your legs as you walk . The idea is to swing each pole in time with the opposite foot moving forward (right foot, left pole, and so on) in what quickly becomes a rhythm.

Size matters here – you should be able to hold your elbow at a 90-degree angle when grasping the pole by its hand grip, so, either make sure you choose a fixed pole that’s the right length for your height or buy a fully adjustable pole. We prefer adjustable options – as well as getting a custom height, you can adjust the length for downhill stretches, which require a longer pole than uphill treks.

Collapsible poles collapse like telescopes and can usually be adjusted to any length within a range, using a locking mechanism. You’ll also need a ‘basket’ above the pole’s tip. Stopping your pole from sinking into the ground, baskets come in different types and sizes for different terrains, from soft mud to snow.

Finally, choose a pole with a cork or rubber grip for your hands – we rate cork, as it’s comfortable and wicks away sweat well during hot weather.

Black Diamond alpine carbon cork trekking poles

  • Best : Walking poles overall
  • Weight : 234g
  • Length : 61-130cm
  • Great weight
  • Highly durable
  • Lots of grip
  • Works for deep snow

These carbon classics from trekking specialists Black Diamond strike the balance between weight and durability. The flick locks are quick and easy to use, and the ergonomic grips are made from cork, but there’s also a rubberised extension below, for added grip on steep terrain, so, you get the best of both materials. The padded wrist strap feels secure, and the poles come with two basket sets, including one for deep snow, plus interchangeable carbide and rubber tips.

Vango camino single pole

  • Best : Budget walking pole
  • Weight : 280g
  • Length : 67-135cm
  • Great price
  • Operates higher than it’s price range suggests
  • Could be a little flimsy for really tough terrain

Walking poles needn’t cost you a packet. Vango has proven you can grab a great pair of poles for less than £50, with the brand’s simple camino pole, which is sold individually. Nice and light at 280g and folding down to a respectable 67cm for easy transport or for tying onto your backpack, this functional pole punches above its price point.

We reckon it’s a bit flimsy for tough treks, but for weekends on hiking trails or for packing for your first walking holiday, it’s a bargain.

Black Diamond trail walking poles

  • Best : All-rounder walking poles
  • Weight : 305g
  • Length : 64-140cm
  • Comfortable
  • Great for beginners

Fancy buying your first walking poles but not sure where to start? This is a fuss-free, sturdy pair that will do you proud on its namesake country trails and hilly terrain. Comfortable rubber grips with a ribbed pattern are easy to grab, and feel good to hold on to all day. Meanwhile, well-made flick locks make it quick and easy to fold up the poles, and a decent weight at 305g per pole makes this pair a good choice for beginner hikers tackling their first mountain paths.

Leki micro vario carbon folding poles

  • Best : Walking poles for travelling
  • Weight : 229g
  • Length : 38-130cm
  • Fully adjustable
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to pack

These walking poles fold up to just 38cm, which is dinky enough to fit in a daypack or even a waist pouch. This makes them ideal for trail runners and travellers as well as for popping in your backpack for occasional use during hikes. The poles’ three break-apart sections lock together easily, even when you’re wearing giant gloves, and the top section has its own adjustment mechanism to help you find the perfect length. The foam grips are comfortable, but they can get a bit sweaty during long, warm treks, and they aren’t as durable as cork.

Robens Coniston T7 walking poles

  • Best : Value for money walking poles
  • Weight : 294g
  • Length : 37-133cm
  • Reliably tough

We’ve tested a few Robens walking pole offerings (all of which are named after beauty spots in the Lake District) and we reckon they all give great bang for your buck (or should that be pole for your pound?). The Coniston stood out on test, however – this lightweight aluminium pole folds down to a respectably small 37cm but is sturdy to walk with, easy to clip together and reliably tough, even with regular use. You won’t find a better pair of poles for around £50 – great if you’re big on adventure but small on budget.

Leki Cressida FX carbon lady trekking poles

  • Best : Women-specific walking poles
  • Weight : 245g
  • Length : 100-120cm
  • Tailored to shorter women
  • Keeps hands cool

Do women need to choose female-specific walking poles? In general, no – but shorter women may prefer a lightweight design tailored to their height, rather than a unisex model.

Leki’s Cressida trekking poles are fully adjustable, while the carbon shaft feels rugged and stable on all terrains, but without much added weight. Each pole is just 245g, so, this is a good choice for less-able hikers who don’t want to feel weighed down.

The clips are quick and easy to lock and unlock, enabling you to get the right length for you, while the breathable strap and comfortable cork grip (designed for smaller hands) keep palms cool even during hot weather.

Although these walking poles are currently out of stock, you can sign up to be notified when they’re available again, as they’re due to be restocked soon.

Les Batons d’Alain ski touring poles

  • Best : Mountain poles
  • Weight : 225g
  • Length : 115cm, 125cm, 135cm
  • Designed with tough snowy terrain in mind
  • Can’t store them in a backpack

Les Batons d’Alain (French for ‘Alan’s poles’) are brightly-hued fixed hiking and skiing poles designed and made in the foothills of Mont Blanc by mountain guide Alain Desez. These poles have a sturdy aluminium main body and a long, padded foam grip that enables the hiker to hold the pole at different heights. Sounds like a simple idea but when you’re hiking on rocky, mountainous ground, Alain’s poles let you adjust your grip on the fly, which saves time, compared with fiddly adjustable walking poles. The downside is you can’t store them in a backpack.

Silva aluminium trekking poles

  • Best : Cork grip walking poles
  • Weight : 232g
  • Length : 110-140cm
  • Breathable and comfy

“These poles are made for walking”, says Silva of its affordable aluminium offering, which we’d agree is a great all-rounder if you don’t want to splash cash on carbon.

A good choice for your first pair of trekking poles, these tick all the boxes at an affordable price point – they’re made from lightweight but sturdy aluminium, are adjustable with good flick locks and come with snow baskets for winter mountain conditions. The cork handles are breathable and comfy, and a generous 140cm of height will suit taller trekkers.

Walking poles FAQs

What is the best material for walking poles.

There are different pole materials to choose from – carbon is a bit of a wonder material for trekking poles, as it’s strong but lightweight, while aluminium is a tad cheaper but more durable. Look for grips made with cork or foam rather than plastic, as you’ll want something that’s comfier to hold, while staying warm in cold weather and wicking away sweat in warm weather.

The verdict: Walking poles

Robens’s Coniston gives great bang for your buck – you won’t find a better pair of poles for around £50. However, if you can afford to splash out, Black Diamond’s comfy cork alpine carbon is ready for trekking and was worth of the top spot for us. Meanwhile, if you’re after something for mountain terrain in all seasons, Les Batons d’Alain offer an innovative treat.

I visited the island that's been called the 'Hawaii of Europe.' Here's why it's a must-see hidden gem.

  • I visited Madeira, Portugal, which is often referred to as the " Hawaii of Europe."
  • Madeira offers a mild climate all year, rugged coastlines, and a bustling city center.
  • I recommend checking out places like Monte Palace and the Cabo Girão skywalk.

Insider Today

When I visited Madeira, Portugal , I found an island paradise brimming with natural wonders and cultural opportunities.

From outdoor adventures to trips to the enchanting Funchal city center, this Portuguese hidden gem has sparked comparisons to Hawaii due to the island's striking volcanic features, black-sand beaches, and towering peaks.

Madeira is the perfect blend of a tropical and European vacation, coupled with its yearlong mild climate, rugged coastlines, cascading waterfalls, and verdant cliffs.

With visitation at an all-time high , there's never been a better time to explore Portugal. Here are seven things you have to do while in Madeira.

Get a taste of outdoor adventure while hiking.

adventure trips hiking

The view from the Pico do Arieiro mountaintop left me speechless.

You can truly appreciate Madeira's diverse landscapes from up there: jagged peaks, verdant valleys, and the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretching out before you.

I opted for a car ride to the top, but if you plan to hike, I recommend heading to the Vereda dos Balcões trail or the challenging but rewarding Levada do Caldeirão Verde.

When you need a break from hiking, catch a ride on the Funchal cable cars.

adventure trips hiking

Located in the city center, the Funchal cable cars offer spectacular views as they ascend from Funchal to the charming village of Monte. It's perfect if you're traveling with family, including kids or elders.

Once in Monte, you can visit one of the island's main attractions, Monte Palace.

Monte Palace is the best botanical garden I’ve ever been to.

adventure trips hiking

Monte Palace houses a huge collection of exotic plants from all over the world. The tropical gardens are also home to gorgeous birds like swans, flamingos, peacocks, and chickens.

From its beautiful gardens to its collection of ceramic tiles and precious gemstones, this place feels like a hidden oasis in the midst of the city.

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, check out the Cabo Girão skywalk.

adventure trips hiking

If there's something I love as much as the outdoors, it's a unique experience . So when I heard of Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe , I knew I had to visit.

The top of the cliff features a unique glass-floored skywalk suspended over 1,900 feet above sea level. When standing on the glass, I got unmatched views of Madeira's rugged coastline and the crashing waves underneath.

When in Madeira, skip the beer and stick to its famous wine.

adventure trips hiking

In addition to being the name of the name of the island, Madeira is also a type of fortified wine. Needless to say, you can't leave without visiting a vineyard to learn more about the island's winemaking heritage.

I highly recommend booking a guided tour with a tasting to see the grapes firsthand and gain insights into the intricate aging process that gives these wines unique flavors.

Take a trip to the local market.

adventure trips hiking

Whenever I visit a new city or country, I like to stop at the local farmers market . In Madeira, I visited the Mercado dos Lavradores, which is located in the heart of Funchal.

It was a great opportunity to sample local delicacies while buying souvenirs from local craftsmen.

For a glimpse into everyday life, don’t skip a visit to the Camara da Lobos fishing village.

adventure trips hiking

Away from the city center and less frequented by tourists , the picturesque fishing village of Camara da Lobos offers a slice of authentic island life.

Grab a poncha, a local Madeira cocktail, and admire the dozens of art murals that surround the community, all while enjoying the colorful harbor and fishermen unloading their catch of the day.
