Scarf basics [ ]

  • The color of the Scarf matches the color of the Robe a Wayfarer is wearing.
  • This is often called "fly power".
  • The Scarf grows as you progress through the game by picking up collectible Symbols .
  • Be careful with War Machines as they like to munch on your scarf, tearing it in half !
  • The Length indicates the maximum flying power.
  • The length of your scarf resets once you finish the game (during the next journey, gather the Symbols again to fly further and longer).

Getting and extending the Scarf [ ]

Symbol 1 CS2

The first collectible Symbol in Journey .

You get the Scarf when you pick up the very first symbol in the title sequence of the game (if you skip that symbol, then any other Symbol that you pick first).

Picking up the collectible Symbols extends the scarf (to a certain length, see Scarf theory ).

After your first Journey , you can choose " Chapter Select " in the menu. Doing so brings you to the middle of the circle of buildings in the first level.

You will have the Scarf from the first Symbol, so you do not have to walk back to collect it. Get the two Symbols around the big ruin in the middle and then choose a level.

If you do not pick any Symbol in Chapter Select and go to a level, the game adds a little scarf. This also happens if you lose all the scarf in the Underground level and enter the Tower . [1]

Using the Scarf [ ]

2019-08-19 18 29 41-Greenshot

If you use your fly power wisely, you can reach places...

  • Symbols/pattern embroidered on your Scarf indicate how much "fly power" you have (like a fuel tank).
  • Pressing the corresponding "fly" button on your controller, mouse, keyboard or screen will make you fly up, see Controls . Use movement buttons/sticks to fly in a certain direction.
  • No symbols/an empty scarf means you cannot fly and if you are mid-flight you will fall/glide until you hit the ground.
  • You get to fly longer by "pumping", i.e. pressing the button every second or two, rather than holding it down.
  • Rather than bashing your head with a fly button (and losing power rapidly), go around the object and then resume flying.
  • Moving your camera to the "down" position (toward the ground) when flying is helpful, see Dive Boost (DB) .

Gaining fly power [ ]

PD glyph2

In some levels Carpets will actively come to you and charge the Scarf. It's also helpful to aim for them.

Also called (re)charging the Scarf.

There are many expressions used to say "get symbols on your scarf, so you can fly".

Depending on Scarf length, it can take some seconds until an empty Scarf is completely filled with Symbols again. In most cases, it's a good idea to charge your Scarf fully.

Goo - Tower 1

The Goo / mist / fog in the Tower will keep you charged constantly.

Scarf recharges:

  • Every cloth object or "animal" will charge your scarf, except for Gary and Larry who are too small to give you energy.
  • Tandem Flying only works though, if both chirp regularly or try to touch each other while flying.
  • A White Robe's scarf will recharge upon landing on a solid surface, giving the White Robe significantly more mobility than a Red Robe has.
  • When picking up a white glowing symbol, your scarf is recharged for the duration of the pickup animation.
  • For efficient flying, start flying away from the Symbol during the pickup animation toward your next target.
  • Avoiding an empty scarf: while in mid-air aim immediately at the next scarf-recharging thing .
  • Chirp repeatedly at flyers while flying up or away, and they will come and charge you again.

Flying alone and with a Companion [ ]

PD tandem to tower

Charging each others fly power through Chirp is called Tandem Flying .

Chirping helps both players to stay afloat and fly over long distances. This is called Tandem Flying .

Chirping helps both players to stay together and fly over long distances . It's extremely important to "chirp the scarf" when you are with a Red Cloak Companion and even more in the Snow level, where a Red Cloak's scarf-energy just fades away.

  • As a White Robe, assuming you don't skip any symbols, the last one you need to collect for full length is in the Kelp room of the Underground level.
  • As a Red Robe, full scarf length is reached upon collecting the first two symbols in the Tower level (again, assuming no skips and no losses).
  • The scarf length in Paradise is always set to maximum.

Scarf theory [ ]

Longest RR scarf

Longest Scarf possible

  • Journey defines the player's scarf length as a number between 0 (no scarf) and 30 (maximum length), for both white robe or red robe wayfarers. Visually in the game a full length scarf will only display 28 embroidery patterns however, and the true length will be scaled accordingly as the scarf grows.
  • The Red robe player starts with a scarf length of 4 , whereas a White robe player starts with a scarf length of 10 after teleporting to CS . (Or when collecting the first CS glowing symbol if you watched the intro cutscene: this first symbol around the broken statue doesn't add any scarf length if you teleported to CS directly, which is why it also is not collected in All Symbols speedrun categories).
  • The order of +1 or +2 glowing symbols alternates constantly . If the first symbol you collect gives you 2 more scarf units, then the next one would give +1, and the third one would give +2 again, and so on...
  • Even the first glowing symbol collected in a playthrough can give 1 or 2 scarf units, depending on the last symbol collected since launching the game.
  • In case you just launched the game, it will read the save file that gets overwritten at every level transition (not considering the CS portals to teleport to levels other than BB ): this means in a situation where you collected a +2 symbol last in Broken Bridge, entered Pink Desert and collected a +1 symbol there before exiting the game, the last info stored in the save file will be that +2 symbol from BB ! So after relaunching the game the first symbol collected will be a +1.
  • The longer scarf you get by starting with a +2 symbol first can only give a slight advantage when having an odd number of glowing symbols collected (see scarf chart below)
  • A jump always consumes 4 scarf units , except when wearing the white robe and jumping from the ground without sliding , which will consume only 3 units  ! Having only 1 unit of charge left in the scarf can still be used for a regular jump .
  • As a Red Robe, if you walk back in the entrance gate of Snow level immediately at the end of the cutscene, you will lose 3 scarf charges before warming up again (which is better than jumping back in and losing 4 charges with the jump + only 2 more due to frost). Keep that in mind if you plan on going OOB on your own using a Charge Boost / Dropshoot + Dry Boost point combo (quite hard to pull off).

Scarf length chart

The bold numbers represent a bonus jump for Red Robe wayfarers. Info about the "quick reddie" glitch below.

Is this a +1 or +2 symbol ? [ ]

We don't recommend casual players to worry about any of that. This question is mostly relevant to speedrunners willing to optimize their performance best they can !

That said, as a red robe you can have a quick look at your scarf after collecting your first symbol: if you count 4.5 full embroidery patterns on it, it was a +2 symbol. If only 3.5 patterns are visible, it was a +1 symbol.

As a white robe , rather than counting the embroidery on a longer scarf, you can attempt to jump 4 times from the ground after collecting the first symbol: if you can, it was a +2 symbol (10 base scarf length and a +2 symbol = 12 total scarf length. The first jump on the ground uses 3 units, then 4 units for the second and 3rd jumps, and finally the last scarf unit available for the 4th jump).

It is also possible to determine if any symbol is a +1 or +2 by watching the end of the scarf while collecting the symbol: the extremity of the scarf will shine very shortly for +1 symbols, and only for as long as the wayfarer is also glowing. For +2 symbols the scarf shine is quite more significant and lasts longer, even a little while after the wayfarer stops glowing  ! Technically you could probably also just observe how much the scarf grows, but it may be hard to notice.

Scarf-energy

Picture showing how the scarf shines after collecting a +2 symbol

Scarf tricks and glitches [ ]

  • Additionally, if you have the game saved in a certain level as a red robe and go to the main menu, then wait for the screen to flash black before pressing "continue", the game will give you back the scarf charge you had when first entering the level plus this 1 bonus charge ! Pressing "continue" faster makes you re-enter the level with the charge you should normally have.
  • " Quick reddie " glitch from the chart above: If you collect two symbols extremely quickly (touching the 2nd one before the charge from the first symbol gets delivered in your scarf), it is possible to transform the scarf value of the first symbol ! This is possible only in Chapter Select level by doing a dive with a slightly flat camera angle ( level boost ). This results in collecting two +1 or two +2 symbols in a row, and it can be very useful for Red Robe Glitched speedrunners ! Make sure the last symbol collected was a +2 before attempting this trick, to have two +2 symbols in a row. It is recommended to start diving just before collecting the first symbol, otherwise you won't be fast enough.
  • On PC if you chirp flyers, touch any cloth creature or take a glowing symbol, and then extremely quickly go to main menu and press continue, you can recharge most of your scarf as a red robe when re-entering the level ! (assuming it was empty or almost when first entering said level). The faster you are with the menuing, the more it will recharge your scarf ! Here is a speedrun example completely abusing of this mechanic between several level transitions. It wasn't accepted officially on the speedrun leaderboard due to altering the scarf management spirit of red robe runs, clashing with Playstation possibilities, and breaking the order of levels by teleporting back to CS multiple times mid-run. Note taking a symbol rather than chirping at flyers when doing this glitch can be used to also swap the order of +1 or +2 symbols, like done in this run between BB and PD ! This results in collecting two +2 symbols in row once again, on top of the CS glitch originally performed at the start of the run by being a "quick reddie".

Chapter Select scarf [ ]

"CS scarf" is a community term for a short Scarf. The Companion is assuming that someone used one of the buildings in Chapter Select (CS) to meet them. They didn't pick up the symbols in the levels before.

Other reasons for a CS scarf:

  • Scarf got eaten by War Machines (WM) in Underground (UG)
  • Player does not want or need a long scarf
  • In the Snow level its length decreases through "freezing off"/wind.

Invisible Scarf glitch [ ]

The Scarf of the Wayfarer will become invisible.

It seems that both is possible: you can not see your Scarf or your Companion's one.

Unlock Powerful White Robes in Journey With Every Symbol Location

Image of Kevin Thielenhaus Legacy Author

Now that Journey is out on Playstation 4, take a return trip and collect every glowing symbol with our locations guide, helping your mysterious pilgrim unlock the powerful white robes outfit.

Finding these rare glowing symbols upgrades the wanderer’s scarf power, allowing them to glide and leap further across the desolate landscape of Journey . Collect them all, and there’s a bonus costume in your future — the white robes instantly refill your scarf after a landing, making exploration easier than ever before.

Check out the entries below for tips, showing you how to find every glowing symbol and where to collect your reward, the white robes, when you’re done.

Symbol Locations – How to Unlock White Robes

To unlock the powerful White Robe outfit, you’ll need to collect every symbol. Glowing symbols upgrade your scarf.

Once every symbol is collected, return to the Hub and go up the steps to the area that shows how many symbols you’ve collected. Travel to the glowing white thread and press [Circle] to change into the white robes. Change back into your normal robes by returning to this location and pressing [Circle].

The white robes, when worn, instantly regenerate scarf jumping energy after landing.

Locations Guide

  • Symbol #1 : The first glowing symbol is right in front of your starting point.
  • Symbol #2 : After crossing the sands in the lower area, you’ll reach a three-story platform that you circle to reach the top. On the second level, continue past the partially-crumbled top to find a symbol to the left.
  • Symbol #3 : There’s a small platform sticking out of the sand to the right of the three-story platform, between it and the building with stairs. Jump and glide to it or run across the valley.

Broken Bridge Area

  • Symbol #1 : The first symbol is near the starting point of this area. It’s found on a ledge to the right where there’s a sandfall, before reaching the broken bridge in the distance.
  • Symbol #2 : Return to the starting point and travel northwest. Watch the rock wall for a cave hidden behind another sandfall, partially obscuring the glowing symbol inside.
  • Symbol #3 : At the start of the area, travel left and look next to a rocky outcropping between the staggered broken bridges.

Desert Area

  • Symbol #1 : Travel right from the starting point through the dunes to find a small ruin of pillars with the glowing symbol sitting on top of a column.
  • Symbol #2 : From the start, move toward the mountain in the far, far distance. Eventually, beams of light will shoot out from the mountain’s direction and land in the desert. The first leads straight to a small ruin with a symbol glowing above a wrecked wall.
  • Symbol #3 : Leave the start of the desert, moving left until you come across flying clothe creatures near ruins buried deep in the sand. Move toward the mountain to spot another ruin with an Ancient Glyph. Moving toward the mountain again, across one more dune, there’s a tall tower with stairs containing the next symbol at the top.
  • Symbol #4 : Inside the massive sandstorm, travel up to the top of the tower. Before going up the steps to the shrine, check out the ledge to the left.

Sunken City Area

  • Symbol #1 : Just as you start sliding through the city, follow the arches on the left path. Once you pass through five, move right to a ruined hallway in the center of the path. There’s a glowing symbol inside.
  • Symbol #2 : After jumping through a sandfall and appearing over a massive canyon, look to the right. There’s a platform jutting out from the rock wall with an easily visible glowing symbol.
  • Symbol #3 : During the second sliding sequence, stick to the center of the desert and move through the three arches. After ramping off a rock, you should see a large rock mountain sticking out of the sand ahead with a building on top. Move slightly left and use the rock ramp to leap to a narrow canyon in the central rock formation ahead.

Underground Passage Area

  • Symbol #1 : At the start of the underground passage, you’ll find square-ish tubes stuck in the sand. Eventually, you’ll find one tube on the left sticking up. Look inside it to get the symbol.
  • Symbol #2 : Past the previous symbol, you’ll enter a larger area with arches holding up more tubes. Follow the flowing clothe to a tube suspended over the sand on the right with an opening pointing toward the entrance. Glide into the tube to see it.
  • Symbol #3 : In the following room, you’ll find strange jellyfish-shaped floating clothe creatures. Midway across the chamber, you’ll find a series of these jellyfish positioned straight upward, allowing you to continue leaping up to a very high glowing symbol.
  • Symbol #4 : Entering the dark area near the end, stick to the left wall and explore toward the last slope. There’s a wall of archways, with the glowing symbol right behind it.

Temple Area

  • Symbol #1 : After activating the glowing mural, raising the lights on the central tower, look on a ledge attached to the middle tower, on the left.
  • Symbol #2 : Using more murals to raise the glowing energy, you’ll eventually reveal a clothe dragon. Ride it up and watch the central tower. There’s a hidden opening in one of the walls on the way up containing your next symbol.
  • Symbol #3 : Enter the clothe dragon’s mysterious chamber filled with hanging clothe flags along the exterior edge. There’s a narrow area behind these flags, glide behind them to find a hidden symbol.
  • Symbol #4 : Once the glowing energy has reached the top level of the temple, search the exterior temple walls parallel with the clothe jellyfish. There’s a small room directly above the temple entrance hall, high up from the starting point.

Journey: How to Get the White Robe and Cloak Embroideries

Image of Alex Neeler

There is much more to enjoy in Journey than just its awe-inspiring levels and fantastic music. The game is riddled with collectibles to discover and nothing is more desirable than the White Robe and Cloak Embroideries.

Journey ,White Robe

The White Robe is the most sought after upgrade in Journey. The reason for this is that the White Robe can be obtained at the beginning of each new game and provides a longer scarf right at the start. Even better than that, the robe will automatically recover scarf energy while the player remains on the ground which lets you float your way throughout the game with relative ease. Obtaining the White Robe isn’t very difficult, but it does require a bit of time. By acquiring each Glowing Symbol scarf upgrade in the game, you’ll get the Transcendence trophy and the robe will become available at the entrance to the hub in the first area. Simply step onto the glowing platform of dangling cloth and you’ll step out with a shiny new cloak. Keep in mind that you don’t have to get each scarf upgrade in a single playthrough, so you can spread it out or even abuse Chapter Select to gather the ones you don’t already have.

Cloak Embroideries are special designs that will appear on the bottom of your cloak. They don’t give the player any special attributes, but they do look really, really cool. They are gained in sections by completing the game multiple times through. A new embroidery will be added to your cloak each time you beat the game up to three times. You have to completely beat the game from the introduction level all the way to the end in order to get the new design. The embroideries will appear on both the regular cloak as well as the White Robe and will also glow when charged by floating cloth or another player.

Journey cheats for playstation 3, unlock the hidden white cloak.

Complete the task prompted by the "Transcendence" trophy, which is to acquire all Scarf upgrades hidden in the game. You can do this over multiple playthroughs. Once you acquire the trophy, head to the start of the game (or just pause the game and select "Chapter Select". This option is unlocked after completing the game once). From the center of the area, look to the right and you will see three large cloths sticking out from the ground. Go over to them and simply walk into them. Your cloak will now be white and the scarf you start off with will be longer. Unlike the red scarf, the white scarf will automatically regenerate scarf power once you land after jumping.

Golden Embroidery

Each time you fully beat the game, your robe (either red or white) has a new pattern added to it. The first is just gold around the hem, but each time after that the pattern becomes larger and more intricate until it fully covers you. It's important to note that the game must be fully completed from beginning to end to unlock the next pattern. Skipping to a particularly chapter and then beating the game will give no reward.

  • Dungeon Journal Introduced
  • 3 New Raid Dungeons: Throne of the Four Winds, Blackwing Descent, and Bastion of Twilight
  • Boss Based Raid Lock system: Allowing players to do either the 10 or 25-player raid version of each boss in the same week. Lockouts are based on individual boss.
  • Tol Barad PvP Zone
  • Darkmoon Island: Discover the mysteries Silas Darkmoon has in store for you.
  • Flying in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor

What’s Going Away with Wrath of the Lich King

With the launch of the Cataclysm pre-expansion patch, some items and achievements will no longer be available or will be harder to obtain. It’s important to keep in mind that the game world is going through tremendous changes that will affect the availability of certain rare mounts and items.

  • Swift Zulian Tiger: Zul'Gurub is changing from a raid to a leveling zone and this mount will no longer be obtainable.
  • Swift Razzashi Raptor: This mount will also no longer be obtainable after the change to Zul'Gurub.
  • Razzashi Hatchling : With the change to Zul'Gurub, this non-combat pet will no longer be obtainable.
  • Tome of Polymorph: Turtle: This tome will continue to be available through other means.
  • Crusader's White/Black Warhorse and Swift Alliance Steed/Swift Horde Wolf : As the attempt-based tribute system is being removed from Heroic Trial of the Crusader, the Argent Crusade Tribute Chest will no longer spawn, and these mounts will no longer be obtainable.
  • Mimiron's Head: This mount will change to be a very low drop chance when defeating 25-player Yogg'Saron with no Keepers assisting you.
  • Invincible: This mount will change to be a very low drop chance when defeating Heroic 25-player Lich King.

Quest and Loremaster Changes

The shattering of Azeroth will drastically and permanently alter the continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. In the wake of Deathwing's devastation, adventurers will be summoned to embark on new quests from levels 1 to 60 in these transformed territories -- and with so much new content to be found on these original two continents, many original quests will no longer be available after the shattering occurs. These quests will automatically be removed from your quest log, while any quests you’ve accepted that still exist in Azeroth will remain in your log.

If you've already completed Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms or Loremaster of Kalimdor, you will not lose your achievements. However, if you've made progress toward these achievements without yet completing them, be aware that any quests that are removed from the game will no longer count toward your progress, so you may see your achievement quest counter drop. If you’re close to earning either of these achievements, we strongly suggest you finish them with great haste, as Deathwing's return is imminent.

In addition, the Loremaster achievements are being redesigned slightly to make them easier to track. Rather than having players complete a huge number of quests throughout a single continent, the criteria will change so that you will instead need to complete a set number of quests in each zone. Once you've earned the achievements for each listed zone on a continent, you will then be awarded the Loremaster achievement for that continent. For those who do have Loremaster of Kalimdor or Eastern Kingdoms completed already, you can still go back and get the new achievements for questing in individual zones on those continents.

Journey; Scarf Upgrade Troubles; Brownheadguy 11 years ago #1. I'm trying to collect all the scarf upgrades, and I'm stuck trying to find the third/final upgrade in the sliding chapter (I believe ti's chapter 3 or 4). The upgrades I've already gotten in that level are:

  10. One thing I don't fully understand: do scarf upgrades carry over?

If you want a super long scarf, unlock the white cloak and then start a new Journey. Grab your white cloak without picking up any glyphs, this will give you a decent length scarf already. Then go back and pick up the first 3 glyphs. Now your scarf will be longer than normal until you reach max scarf length.

  11. Transcendence

Finding all of the Symbols hidden throughout Journey will not only reward you with the Transcendence Trophy, but will give you access to an incredibly powerful white robe with a regenerating scarf.

  12. How do you change robe color?

From the cheats section of this website: Unlock the Hidden White Cloak. Complete the task prompted by the "Transcendence" trophy, which is to acquire all Scarf upgrades hidden in the game. You can do this over multiple playthroughs. Once you acquire the trophy, head to the start of the game (or just pause the game and select "Chapter Select".

  14. What is the progress level of the robe? :: Journey General Discussions

Btw I noticed that progressing the robe is just finishing the game once again. So there is no way to get white robe level 1 (with default picture), because you have to finish the game at least once (i.e. to get level 2). Otherwise you won't have access to Chapter Select and white robe.

  15. Journey: How to Get the White Robe and Cloak Embroideries

The White Robe is the most sought after upgrade in Journey. The reason for this is that the White Robe can be obtained at the beginning of each new game and provides a longer scarf right at the start.

  16. Journey

Uncover all 10 ancient glyphs. Use the Ancient Glyphs page to find all 10 murals. Intro The first of the Ancient Glyphs in Journey is found early on in the introduction. Once you grab the first of your Symbols, the game sort of ushers you to move forward. Instead, head right and continue over a dune to spot a small shrine that houses the Glyph.

  17. Robe Embroideries

Robe Embroideries. An embroidered robe. Your robe can be embroidered to show your experience at Journey. Each time you fully complete the game, your robe has a new pattern added to it. You must not skip any levels to reach the next pattern. Embroided Hem—Completed the game once. Second Embroidery—Completed the game twice.
