Food tours in Asia

people eating street food in Vietnam

This time, let your tastebuds do the exploring...

Asian food in all its sweet and sour glory continues to influence world cuisine. Ginger, cinnamon, pepper and turmeric were the stuff of legend in the 1600s, and sticky stir-fries, fragrant curries and juicy dumplings have all made their mark on today’s global palate. But nothing beats the real thing, fresh from the wok. Come with us on a food tour through the night markets of  Thailand , the lucious  Vietnamese  Mekong Delta, and the beautiful teahouses of  Japan . One tip? Pack stretchy pants.

Food trips in Asia

Food tours in asia highlights, why choose us.

We love the highlights, but for us the real magic is found off the tourist trails. Our trips combine iconic sites with hidden gems that you’ll only discover with Intrepid. We’re talking mornings exploring the Taj Mahal, followed by a Mughlai cooking class with a passionate home cook.

Whether you’re perusing markets, hunting down the best street food bites or learning how to cook centuries-old family recipes at a homestay, there’s no better way to get the inside scoop on a destination – and its culinary traditions – than with an expert local leader by your side.

Big coaches and flag-toting tour guides don’t cut it for us. With a maximum group size of 12, our groups blend in with the locals and have plenty of opportunities to interact with chefs, street food vendors and group leaders. It also means you can really connect with your fellow foodies.

Cooking & Culture in Southeast Asian Cooking Classes

A couple enjoying a cooking class in Vietnam.

Lying to the west of Vietnam is Cambodia, your other destination during this amazing Southeast Asian culinary vacation. A fertile and predominantly rural country, life there still revolves around the family, the village, the rice fields, and the local Buddhist temple. A majority of the Cambodians are Khmer, but minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, and Chams. During your Cambodian cooking school tour, you will visit Siem Reap, an intriguing city that boasts Chinese-style and colonial architecture and is the gateway to the Angkor region, home to some of the most amazing temples in Southeast Asia.

You will visit the markets, cruise on the rivers, and explore the cities of Vietnam, and will journey to see the ancient Wat temples in Cambodia.

  • 8 Night Itinerary

Please be advised that booking for internal flights will be done upon confirmation. The sequence of activities may be altered depending on the confirmed flight schedules.

  • Arrival in Hanoi and transfer to your hotel. Time to relax for a bit after the trip.
  • This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant featuring a large selection of traditional Vietnamese food – a perfect introduction into the local cuisine!  You can taste a variety of dishes to acquaint you with the flavor profiles of Vietnamese cooking.
  • In the morning, pick up from your hotel for the cooking class, starting with a market visit. The guide will bring you to a traditional market and tell you about the main ingredients in Vietnamese cuisine, so you can have a clearer overview about Vietnamese food and an insight into Vietnamese herbs and spices (herbs and spices are important in Asian dishes). You will get to know some key useful Vietnamese words to buy and bargain the necessary ingredients yourself, which is very useful for you for bargaining for anything you want to buy afterward during your Vietnam trip.
  • After purchasing the required ingredients for the Hanoi cooking class, you will return to the kitchen to learn the principles and general techniques for Southeast Asian cuisine. You will then observe the guide as they prepare the dishes. Once the demonstration is complete, you will have the opportunity to cook the dishes yourself and savor your masterpiece.
  • After Hanoi culinary class, enjoy a cultural tour of this amazing city. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Complex, which is a lovely park setting that is home to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (which can only be viewed from the outside), in which is entombed the embalmed body of Ho Chi Mihn. (The Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays, every afternoon, and annually June 15 to August 15.) Next see the Presidential Palace (also may be viewed from the outside only), then stroll through the park to the Ho Chi Minh Stilt House, the simple two-room dwelling where Ho Chi Minh lived from 1958 until his final days. Preserved in the same condition as during his life, it may be viewed through the windows. Visit the miniature One Pillar Pagoda. Also dating from the 11th century, this monument was rebuilt after being destroyed by the French in 1954.
  • Next step is the Temple of Literature, a peaceful series of walled courtyards and graceful gateways. This monument is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture. Founded in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius, this was also the site of Vietnam’s first university. In one courtyard, giant stone tortoises bear stelae (columns) on their backs, listing the accomplishments of graduating scholars.
  • Next, enjoy a Water Puppet Show, a marvelous local art form originating in northern Vietnam and best seen in Hanoi.
  • As part of the Hanoi food tour, you will have the opportunity to dine at a traditional local restaurant that gained fame after Anthony Bourdain brought President Obama there. You will relish in the simplicity and deliciousness of the food, just as the locals do.
  • Breakfast and check out for your flight to Danang. (The flight will usually be in the morning, around 10 am.
  • As part of the Hoi An food tour, you will be transferred from Danang Airport to Hoi An and treated to a scrumptious lunch at an authentic local eatery.
  • After lunch, enjoy a tour by cyclo and on foot. Hoi An is a picturesque riverside town south of Danang. Known as Faifo to early western traders, it was one of South East Asia’s major international ports during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Now, this beautifully preserved historic city is best seen on foot. See the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge – the first bridge on this site was constructed in 1593 by the Japanese community of Hoi An to link the town with the Chinese quarters across the stream. The bridge was provided with a roof so it could be used as a shelter from rain and sun. Visit the nearby Sa Huynh Museum, which contains exhibitions from the earliest period of Hoi An’s history.
  • Stroll to the Tran Family Chapel, a house for worshipping ancestors that was built about 200 years ago with donations from family members. The Tran family traces its origins to China and moved to Vietnam around 1700. The architecture of the building reflects the influence of Chinese and Japanese styles. Visit the Phuoc Kien Assembly Hall, a Chinese pagoda built around 1690 and then restored and enlarged in 1900. It is typical of the Chinese clans that were established in the Hoi An area. The temple is dedicated to Thien Hau Thanh Mau (Goddess of the Sea and Protector of Sailors and Fishermen). Finally, visit a lantern making workshop, one of many in Hoi An. The framework for the lanterns is made beforehand and clients can observe locals adorning silk cloth on the lantern.
  • Finish with a visit to a tailor’s shop.
  • Free time for shopping or relaxing.
  • During the Hoi An cooking tour, you will get to experience a delightful dinner at a local wine bar and restaurant that is widely regarded as one of the city’s top new dining establishments.
  • Breakfast, then visit Hoi An’s main market and experience its sights, sounds, and aromas. You will have a chance to interact with the vendors and taste a variety of foods on display.
  • Next, board the Red Bridge boat for a cruise along the Ho An River to the cooking school where you will have your next class. You will have a chance to view local river life on the way.
  • You will begin your Hoi An cooking class by exploring the herb and vegetable garden and discovering the ingredients used in some of the city’s most renowned dishes. The 2-hour foodie class will start with a demonstration of the cooking techniques, which you will then replicate as you prepare the same dishes yourself. To conclude the experience, you will enjoy a delicious lunch made from the dishes you have created.
  • Transfer back and free time to shop, rest, or explore, or to revisit the tailor for any adjustments to clothing you have ordered.
  • In the late afternoon, enjoy a private two-hour sunset fisherman’s cruise on the Thu Bon river. Transfer with your guide to the pier and experience the most precious part of a local fisherman’s day – the late afternoon, when they set out in their colorful boats hopeful of a generous catch. Your sunset cruise will take you to where the mouth of the Thu Bon River meets the Cua Dai Sea. You will be party to two special daily rituals: the passing parade of the local fishing fleet setting out to sea, and the magic of the sun slowly sinking in the western sky.
  • After the cruise, transfer back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner, or you prefer to transfer directly to dinner.
  • Dinner tonight in a restaurant featuring modern Vietnamese gastronomy.
  • Breakfast and check out before departing early (around 8 am) for a very special excursion. You will hop on a bike to travel through the surrounding countryside to the Tra Que Village, located on a quiet and peaceful stream. Tra Que village is famed throughout Vietnam for the quality and variety of its vegetables and herbs, grown using a special method of organic farming. You’ll spend the morning participating in various farming activities; perhaps join the farmers in preparing the land and fertilizing it with algae from the local lake. Continue getting to know the local way of life by helping with other activities such as raking the ground, sowing seeds, watering greens, picking vegetables and many more gardening activities. Return to the farmer’s house and learn to harvest and wrap the vegetables for lunch. Bid farewell to your new friends and cycle back to your hotel (the distance is about 5 miles/30 minutes by bike each way).
  • Transfer to Danang airport for your flight to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), which usually departs around 5 pm.
  • Upon arrival in Saigon, transfer to your hotel for check-in.
  • You’ll be taken to a local restaurant in Saigon for a delicious dinner as part of your foodie tour. After finishing your meal, you’ll be driven to your hotel where you can spend the night
  • Breakfast, then depart for a full-day tour of Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City. A vibrant metropolis, Saigon teems with energy, activity and motion. Everywhere you look, you see the convergence of traditional and modern life. The emerging modern skyline stands toe to toe with colonial buildings and traditional temples. Outside on the streets, young professionals zip by on motorbikes and chat on cell phones; inside the quiet temple courtyards, worshippers pray amidst clouds of incense. Begin the tour of this exciting city with a visit of the historic center, strolling along Dong Khoi Street, formerly known as the Rue Catinat, the main shopping thoroughfare and heart of old colonial Saigon. Pass by classic European-style landmarks such as the ornate City Hall (Hotel De Ville), the old Opera House (both may only be viewed from the outside), and pay a quick visit to the neo-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office.
  • Afterwards, dive into modern history with a tour of the Reunification Palace. Formerly the Independence Palace of the South Vietnamese president, this 60s-style building was famously stormed by tanks on April 30, 1975, signifying the fall of South Vietnam. It has been preserved in its original state, and the original tanks remain on display near the entrance gates.
  • Next visit the Emperor of Jada Pagoda, one of Saigon’s most interesting Pagodas, before heading to the bustling “Cholon” (Chinatown). Walk through the lively quarter where many generations of Chinese live and run their businesses. Continue to Thien Hau Pagoda, built by the Cantonese congregation, and end at the central Ben Thanh Market, where vendors display an amazing array of handicrafts and goods.
  • Lunch at a traditional Vietnamese restaurant, a real hidden gem offering the most authentic Vietnamese cuisine. You can sit with the local to enjoy the gastronomic specialties of Saigon and enjoy the strong Vietnamese coffee that will make your pulse race. (French colonists are thought to have introduced coffee to Vietnam but it quickly became a local habit. The Vietnamese put their own spin on it, however, and make coffee drinks that include yogurt, eggs, and even fruit.)
  • Return to the hotel to rest, or explore on your own. If you are interested in the Vietnam War, you might want to stop at the powerful and harrowing War Remnants Museum, which comprehensively documents the travails of the long Vietnam-American War. Inside are detailed photographic exhibitions; outside is a collection of tanks, planes and weapons.
  • During your Saigon food tour, you have the opportunity to partake in a distinctive dining experience tonight. This extraordinary culinary adventure takes place at a restaurant where you will be served in absolute darkness, relying solely on your sense of smell and taste to navigate the meal. However, if you are not comfortable with this unconventional approach, we can arrange a more customary dining experience for you upon request.
  • Transfer back to your hotel and overnight.
  • Early breakfast and check out, then transfer to the Saigon airport for your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia.
  • Arrival in Siem Reap and transfer to your hotel with time at leisure.
  • Lunch in a local restaurant known for its traditional Khmer (Cambodian) cuisine.
  • Time at leisure to explore your surroundings until it is time for your afternoon sightseeing in Angkor, where you will watch the sun set over the Cambodian countryside from the upper terraces of an ancient Angkorian temple.
  • Indulge in a delectable dinner tonight at a local restaurant, complemented by a mesmerizing Apsara dance performance as part of your Siem Reap food tour.
  • Breakfast, followed by a tour of Angkor. The crown jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat is the national symbol and the highlight of any visit to Cambodia. The largest, best preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkor temples, Angkor Wat impresses visitors both by its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as by the delicate artistry of its carvings. To approach the temple, first cross the vast moat, continuing along a broad causeway lined with naga balustrades. Upon entrance to the main building, ascend through a series of galleries and courtyards before reaching the central sanctuary, which offers beautiful views back over the causeway and across the surrounding countryside. On the way, stop to enjoy the intricate stone carvings that adorn nearly every surface, with some 1,700 Apsaras, or celestial dancers, sculpted into the walls. Along the outer gallery walls run the longest continuous bas relief in the world, which narrates stories from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant that specializes in Khmer and French fusion.
  • The fortified city of Angkor Thom covers an area of 10 square kilometers. Enclosed by a wall and wide moats, the city includes many of Angkor’s most popular sights. Enter by the monumental South Gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods, each carrying a giant Naga (Hindu semi-deity). Continue to the Terrace of The Elephants and the Terrace of The Leper Kings, former spaces for public ceremonies, both adorned with dramatic bas reliefs. Visit the ruined Baphuon, Royal Enclosure, and Phimeanakas before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple. In this temple, one of the most popular and compelling in Angkor, explore the galleries of beautifully preserved bas reliefs and ascend narrow stairs to reach the central sanctuary, where giant stone faces smiling enigmatically down from every angle.
  • Your last stop is Ta Prohm, one of the most popular attractions of Angkor, as much of the jungle has not been cleared and it looks very much like most of the Angkor monuments would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled across them.
  • Transfer back to the hotel to rest.
  • Experience a one-of-a-kind culinary adventure during your stay in Siem Reap with a foodie tour that begins at 6 pm. As part of your Siem Reap cooking classes, this tour offers a unique opportunity to interact with locals and immerse yourself in their culture as you indulge in some of the most delightful local food delicacies.  (What you eat is of course up to you!) From deep-fried water beetles to stuffed frogs on sticks, deep-fried bananas, and brightly-colored toffee-crusted rice cakes, you’ll have a chance to sample an array of intriguing dishes during this two-hour street food tour. As you explore the vibrant streets, you’ll witness the vivacious atmosphere of the Khmer locals enjoying their early night out and savoring great food and company.
  • End the day with a light dinner of Khmer dishes at a local restaurant, followed by a fruit shake or fruits with condensed milk from a dessert stall.
  • Breakfast and check out.
  • This morning, enjoy one last Siem Reap cooking class before your departure. A talented chef at a renowned Khmer restaurant and organic farm will be your culinary teacher today. You will take a walk through the farm to see the different fruits and vegetables, all grown organically. Then, armed with a box of ingredients fresh from the farm, you will learn how to transform them into an organic Khmer feast for lunch.
  • Time at leisure to shop or have a drink before your transfer to the Siem Reap airport by mid- or late-afternoon. (Please book a departure flight leaving after 5pm).

Where You'll Stay

Operated by intrepid travel.

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel

The only menu you’ll need for foodie experiences, culinary adventures, food tours & cooking classes in Southeast Asia

Will you travel for food? Do travel and food go together like jam and bread? Are foodie experiences on the top of your to-do list when travelling? You are not alone.

If you love travel and food as much as we do, then there is no better place for a foodie adventure than Southeast Asia. Most will agree that this region is one of the best culinary destinations in the world.

To celebrate the sensational travel and food scene of Southeast Asia, we have put together a list of the absolute best foodie experiences and food cities to put on your travel menu.

What is a Foodie Experience?

Foodie experiences South East Asia

The best way to immerse yourself in local culture is to eat. Food brings people together, and food is where cultures intersect. Sit on a little red plastic stool on the street in Hanoi and slurp up your pho bo, and there is nothing that separates you from Mr and Mrs Nguyen next to you. A foodie experience like this is what travel is all about.

A foodie experience is a positive encounter involving food and about the people with whom you’re sharing the food. It’s about the environment, the smells, textures and colours, the sounds, the process involved, and the journey you took to get there.

Like a good recipe, a foodie experience is about what goes into it. But at its core, it’s a  lasting memory with food at the centre of that experience . Those in search of a lasting food memory will find many of them in Southeast Asia.

Best Destinations for Foodie Travellers in Southeast Asia

Foodie experiences South East Asia

To travel is to eat – they are inseparable. You’re likely to have the best food you’ve ever had in your life while on  holiday in Southeast Asia , without even planning it.

So, where in SE Asia should you, as a foodie traveller, go to get the most delicious food? Drumroll. Man, this REALLY is an unfair question to ask. But since you keep on pushing for an answer… Our top 5 food cities of SE Asia are:

  •   Hanoi

(okay, there is no easy way to say that without offending someone)

But, we’ve said it. Throw me with a dumpling. Poke me with a satay skewer. Force a chilli down my throat. Prove us wrong… Visit any of these cities, and you’ll be in culinary Nirvana. But that’s just the tip of the nasi goreng. Outside these food capitals, you’ll find incredible regional food on par with that of the big names.

Regardless of where you eat in Southeast Asia, the food will bowl you over with flavour, colour, aroma and affordability.

Foodie travellers, gourmands, gluttons, and normal people like me and you might even consider going to  Southeast Asia on a food tour . If you’re serious about good food, you can’t go wrong with these delicious food tours.

Or even better, take a cooking class so that you can cook your own Southeast Asian food at home.

A Food Tour with a Difference in Yogyakarta

Foodie experiences Yogyakarta Indonesia

We came to Yogyakarta ( Jogja to the locals) to see the stunning Borobudur temple , but little did we know that we would cherish the city for the fantastic food tour we went on.

It all started over dinner at ViaVia Cafe in Prawirotaman, just around the corner from our hotel . Not realising it at first, ViaVia not only cooks a killer rendang but is also a well-run social enterprise offering exciting tours in and around Jogja.

Our waitress explained that ViaVia empowers young people, especially women, and promotes sustainable and  community-based tourism  in Java. Before we even had our pisang goreng dessert, we were signed up for a culinary tour of Yogyakarta the next day.

Our guides, Reeza and Weewee, picked us up from our hotel with their scooters the next day. With us on the back of their scooters, our guides quickly turned into our buddies as we wove through the Jogja traffic.

First, we stopped at a warung (small restaurant) to make and eat gado gado (a salad of raw and blanched vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, tempeh, tofu and peanut sauce).

Next up was a bakpia cookie factory. Here saw how a team of workers make and bake these mung bean-filled pastries, and we could try as many as we wanted. Reeza explained that these pastries are the most popular  ole ole  (souvenirs) for Indonesians visiting Yogyakarta. (We agree, snacks make the best gifts for those at home.)

Next, we tried gudeg (Java’s signature dish of stewed unripe jackfruit, palm sugar and coconut milk) in the historic Kraton area before moving on to two different dessert stalls to try delicious  kueh .

Our food adventure concluded at a ronde cart (ginger tea with palm fruit and croutons) in front of the Sultan’s palace. We sat on the grass, drank ronde and chatted for a long time after our tour was supposed to have ended. We were not on tour anymore, but just hanging out with friends.

Beautiful Slow Food in Ubud

vegan Foodie Experience, Bali

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali , but perhaps it should be the stomach. Ubud food is gorgeous, fresh, vibrant and healthy, just like the Balinese. The beauty of Ubud food is…well…how beautiful it is.

Where Ubud food rises above the rest of SE Asia is how much of the food is entirely plant-based. Vegetarians, vegans, and people curious about the lifestyle are in for a treat.

All the meals we had in Ubud were beautiful and memorable, from the succulent  babi guling served on banana leaves to the Asian tapas we had at Sacred Rice to the molten lava cakes. But eating at Siboghana Waroeng stands out above them all for its unique simplicity.

Siboghana Waroeng takes slow food to a whole new level. The small menu is entirely vegan, and all the ingredients are organic and locally sourced. Orders are made from scratch, one at a time -some of them over a wooden fire.

A sign warns diners that they only serve homecooked food and that you might have to “wait 45 minutes or so”. We waited for more than that, and it felt strange at first, but then we just surrendered and went with the mellow flow.

As we waited (and waited), we talked about the leaves on the trees and the weather, we sat in silence, we remembered and talked about stuff that happened years ago, and by the time the food finally arrived, we were relaxed as humanly possible.

The food tasted wholesome, and we appreciated the love and effort that went into preparing the simple dishes. Siboghana Waroeng reminded us to slow down and of the beauty of a simple and unrushed life we often yearn for.

History & Spice in the Spice Islands

Nutmeg, Banda Islands Indonesia

The history of spice is in many ways also the history of the world. These aromatic commodities have inspired some of the most remarkable journeys of all time, and, even today, a trip to the Spice Islands is an epic and fragrant adventure.

I met a spice farmer called Braam in the Banda Islands, and he insisted on showing me around his nutmeg plantation. The shade-loving nutmeg trees grow underneath gigantic kenari (almond) trees planted by the colonial Dutch perkeniers (plantation owners) hundreds of years ago.

As we walked under these almond giants, Braam pointed out nutmeg, cutting open the apricot-sized fruit, and revealing the nutmeg inside, surrounded by bright red mace. He showed me how to strip cinnamon bark from trees, which we brewed into a tea with cloves.

The nutmeg fruit is either dried, or cooked into a jam which is served with thick pancakes for breakfast. The nutmeg itself is sprinkled into coffee and sweet snacks such as  dadar gulung  (desiccated coconut pancakes) or halua kenari  (like halva but made with almonds) that you can buy in the morning market in Bandaneira, while mace is used to add depth to savoury dishes.

For the most memorable meal in the Banda islands, head over to Delfika 1 Guesthouse. It’s a historical perkenier  house, and the best place to indulge in Maluku home cooking. Definitely try the Terong Kenari (grilled eggplant in almond sauce).

It’s hard to imagine, but the humble nutmeg led Columbus  to find  the Americas, New Amsterdam became New York and the southern tip of Africa went Dutch. Now that’s something to think about while you’re slathering more nutmeg jam on those pancakes!

The Real Jimbaran Fish Market

Foodie Experience, Bali

Everyone knows that Jimbaran, just north of Uluwatu , is the best place for seafood in Bali. Before sunset, table cloths are ironed, lanterns are lit, tables are set, and beers and chardonnay are chilled before the hungry tourists arrive.

If you want a damn good seafood dinner, come to the Jimbaran seafood restaurants set up on the beach of Jimbaran Bay every night. Jolly good.

But for an authentic foodie experience, continue walking past the tables and waiters on the beach until you reach the actual Jimbaran Fish Market. It’s the large building by the concrete pier.

Here you’ll find hundreds of stalls selling fresh seafood right off the boat. You can touch, smell, inspect, haggle and pick and mix as you like – anything from tuna, barracuda, snapper, grouper, squid, shrimp, lobster and crab to clams and scallops.

Once you have selected and paid for your seafood, head outside, where the narrow streets are lined with little kitchens that will cook your dinner for you. Tell the kitchen how you want your seafood (grilled on the fire, fried, steamed, curry etc.), and you can also order sides like rice or vegetables.

We got a couple of cold Bintang beers, grabbed a table on the street and waited for our fish, shrimp and scallops to marry with the lemon-butter on the grill. It was a fine night with bbq smoke wafting in the sea breeze. The seafood was equally fine.

How to get to Jimbaran: It’s about halfway between Uluwatu and Kuta. You don’t really need to take a tour to Jimbaran, but we recommend hiring a scooter and drive here yourself. From Uluwatu, it takes about 30 minutes to reach Jimbaran by scooter.

Markets & Street Food in Hanoi

Hanoi culinary adventure

It’s no secret that Vietnam is a foodie’s paradise – and Hanoi, the capital, is one culinary mecca that never disappoints. Not only is this one of the best destinations in the region for street food and markets, but it’s also a hotspot for contemporary dining, cocktails, and swish speciality coffee shops.

Some of  Vietnam’s best foodie experiences  can be had in Hanoi, starting with a trip to the Long Bien Market, the city’s biggest wholesale produce market. Things kick off after midnight and wind up by sunrise, so this is definitely one for early risers. Smaller morning markets unfurl throughout the city from 6 am onwards; check out the popular Dong Xuan market near the Old Quarter or Ngoc Ha market for a local experience.

Next, it’s time to sample Hanoi’s legendary street food scene.  Pho Bo  (beef pho) is a breakfast favourite, while Hanoi speciality  Cha Ca  (turmeric and dill fish soup) is another must-try. For something special, head to the Truc Bach neighbourhood for a plate of  Pho Cuon , rice rolls with beef and lettuce.

If you still have room, try a  Ca Phe Trung  (egg coffee) at Dinh Cafe – they lay claim to the original recipe – or a coconut iced coffee at trendy Cong. Dinner at State-Run Food Shop #37 on Truc Bach island is a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience: This restaurant serves up simple but delicious recipes that were popular during the Communist era in a retro-themed dining room, food stamps and all.

Can Tho: A Genuine Floating Breakfast in the Mekong Delta

Food travel, Vietnam

Can Tho, located about 150 kilometres from Saigon, is an underrated foodie place to visit in Vietnam .

It’s famous for the Cai Rang Floating Market, a daily market along the Mekong Delta . Start your food adventure to the Floating Market by riding a sampan from Ninh Kieu Wharf.

During our ride, we saw dozens of overstuffed boats full of fresh produce to sell such as pineapples, watermelons, potatoes, squash, and more. We stopped by a boat and bought a fresh pineapple to enjoy.

One of the coolest experiences was eating hủ tiếu (hot noodle soup) for breakfast on our sampan. It was quite the sight to see the two-person team take orders and serve the most delicious noodle soup from their tiny boat. There was another boat selling drinks so we had a fresh coconut with the noodles.

The second half of the boat ride consisted of stopping by a rice noodle factory where we helped dry fresh rice noodles sheets and cut the sheets into thin noodles. We also saw how puffed rice snacks were made.

At the end of the day, Can Tho has two night markets to check out. Can Tho Night Market has many stalls selling snacks such as bánh tráng nướng ( grilled rice paper with quail eggs and grilled meats) which were some of the tastiest that we’ve had in Vietnam, fish cakes, desserts, and more.

Tan Dai Phong Night Market has BBQ seafood stalls so we tried fresh shellfish and seafood.

Sip, Slurp and Snack through Saigon’s Biggest Market

Food Market, Saigon

Food has always been an essential part of my travels. Exploring the tastes and flavours of authentic Vietnamese cuisine was one of the highlights of my trip to the country.

If you are travelling to Vietnam and would like to try some of the  best Vietnamese food , I recommend visiting Saigon’s Ben Than Night Market. It’s one of the most vibrant food markets I’ve ever visited. It is the city’s biggest market and a Saigon landmark.

The market offers a massive variety of goods: from local handicrafts and Vietnamese art to clothing and, of course, food. The market opens at 6 am every day, but it really comes alive after 6 pm when the Ben Than Night Market starts.

The most exciting part of the Night Market is the food section with amazing fare on offer: from fresh vegetables, exotic fruits, spices to cheap street food and the finest delicacies.

At the Ben Than Night Market, you can try some typical Vietnamese dishes (like  pho,  spring rolls,  banh bio ), Vietnamese delicacies (like  banh cuon ,  bun cha  aka Obama noodles), or even some weird food like snails and silkworms.

The market is located in Ben Thanh Ward, District 1, near the Saigon bus station.

Singapore: Small in Size, Big in Flavour

Food in Singapore

One of the best food experiences in Southeast Asia (and anywhere in the world!) is in Singapore. Singapore has long had a reputation for delicious flavours and cuisine all of its own. It is home to numerous ethnicities, allowing several traditions and cultures to collide into one tasty travel destination!

You can find it all in Singapore – from cheap food markets and stalls to fine dining restaurants winning some of the world’s most coveted awards. And, you will find different neighbourhoods with extremely differing traditions and foods.

A can’t-miss on any  Singapore itinerary  is finding the tastiest food at the hawker centres. You will find these food centres all over Malaysia and Singapore, and they were built as a sanitary alternative to the food carts you will see along city streets. And inside of them, you will feel like you entered a world of food options (at an affordable price).

Maxwell Food Centre, East Coast Lagoon Food Village, and Old Airport Road Food Centre are among some of the favourites in Singapore. My favourite is Old Airport Road, and the Lao Ban Soya Beancurd is a must-try!

Some other delicious foods to try in Singapore are  murtabak  and Singaporean chilli crab. The most famous place to try  murtabak  is near Masjid Sultan at Zam Zam Restaurant. Originally from the Arabian Peninsula, the affordable and flavourful food is typically filled with meat and eggs and is mind-blowingly good!

Nyonya & Peranakan Kuih of Penang

Nyonya dessert, Penang

Penang is the proverbial melting pot of cultures and flavours. Home to Malay, Chinese and Indian communities (all heavyweights in the culinary world), it’s a given that the food in Penang borders on the divine.

Over time, these cultures, ingredients and recipes have simmered and organically fused into one of the most fabulous culinary destinations known to man.

Nyonya or Peranakan cuisines of Penang resulted from this intermarrying between Tamil, Malay and Chinese food, and it is absolutely fantastic. The terms Nyonya and Peranakan are used interchangeably.

While the Penang Asam Laksa , Nasi Lemak and  Char Koay Teow  send most into a delirium, it was the Nyonya desserts called  kuih  that proved to be our Achilles’ heels.

Kuih is a colourful, bite-sized dessert with soft yet firm, spongy and chewy textures all in one. The most common ingredients are coconut, pandan, palm sugar and starchy flour such as tapioca, sago or rice flour.

These bright  kuihs  are beautifully layered, both in colours in flavours. We found them at hawker centres and street food markets all over Penang. For the best street food (including kuih ) in Penang, you can’t go wrong with either the New Lane Hawker Centre or the Gurney Drive Hawker Centre.

We were over the moon when we saw a great collection of kuih on the breakfast buffet at the stunning heritage hotel, the Yeng Keng , where we stayed.

Laksa, Coconut Shakes & More in Melaka

Melaka Foodie experiences

Melaka is one of the best food tourism destinations in Southeast Asia. You can find many different types of cuisine in Melaka, including Western, Indian, Chinese and Malay.

We spent a few weeks in Melaka, and searching for foodie experiences was one of the  best things to do in Melaka .

If you want something delicious, you should try the chicken rice or laksa. If you’re feeling adventurous, go for the curry fish balls or satay. And if you’re looking for something sweet, make sure to try  Katong Kuih  or pineapple tarts!

One of the best things we ate was rice balls. They are balls made of rice with small pieces of chopped chicken – cooked or roasted. We found the best rice balls at Hoe Kee Chicken Rice Balls. The place is so famous that we met people from Singapore who came especially to Melaka to try them. We had several helpings and kept coming back for more.

Another place to get acquainted with food in Melaka is the weekend night market in Jonker street. While on Jonker street, you should try the coconut shakes. The way they throw the juicy coconut flesh flying through the air into your cup is quite an entertaining show to watch.

Also, try the colourful and delicious dim sums while you’re on Jonker Street.

Heavenly, Healthy Food in Chiang Mai

Food tourism, Thailand

Chiang Mai is exciting on so many levels, but it was especially appealing for my partner and me for the great selection of food.

Home of the Khao Soi, a delicious curry noodle soup with all sorts of pickled shenanigans, Chiang Mai has a selection of day and night markets where you can sample delicious Northern Thai specialities. The bounty of fresh produce on offer and the ridiculously low prices will amaze you.

Home to a growing crowd of digital nomads escaping the cold (and I really cannot blame people for flocking here for cheap living and delicious eating), Chiang Mai incidentally also caters exceptionally well to vegans and vegetarians. That is the reason why I decided to settle here for quite a few months.

Between dozens of  Chiang Mai vegan restaurants  and abundant tropical fruits available at the markets (I’ve become a fan of the infamously stinky durian — have you tried it?), Chiang Mai is a food heaven for the health-minded and vegan alike. Don’t leave without trying durian at least once!

Bangkok Street Food

Foodie trip to Bangkok

Bangkok in Thailand  is my personal culinary paradise for street food in Southeast Asia.

Although there are numerous exquisite restaurants in this metropolis to go out to eat, Bangkok street food is really ingenious and unique. Every time I take a trip to the Thai capital, I embark on a culinary journey through the streets and alleys of the city.

The best part is, you don’t have to look far, because street food is on every corner! There are more than 50,000 stalls in Bangkok selling cooked, fried, and fresh food.

The street food is excellent, especially in the numerous night markets, and particularly in the Chinatown district.

Around 6:00 pm, most stalls start setting up, then the chairs are placed on the streets, and the lively eating begins. The flavours are intoxicating; scents of lemongrass, grilled food, chilli, and curry fill the night air.

The most famous dish you can get on almost every corner is Pad Thai, a delicious noodle dish with egg. However, there is much, much, much more to try.

If you don’t dare to go on your own, I recommend joining a Bangkok Street Food Tour. Locals will show you the best food stalls in the city and explain what you are eating!

A Thai Cooking Class in Ao Nang

Krabi cooking class

Krabi might be better known for its beautiful beaches, pristine islands, lush jungles, and ancient temples, but one of the easiest ways to get acquainted with the region’s rich and diverse culture is through your stomach.

While you’ll certainly be able to sample some incredible Thai food no matter where your Krabi itinerary takes you, joining a cooking class is a great way to learn a new skill and master the basics of Thai cuisine in just a few short hours.

There’s no shortage of cooking schools in Krabi’s major tourist hubs, but if you happen to be in Ao Nang, don’t miss joining a class at Smart Cook – a no-frills cooking school located on the outer corners of Ao Nang Village.

The school uses only the freshest locally sourced ingredients, and what’s more, the knowledgeable instructor will make you feel comfortable no matter your cooking abilities.

Unlike other schools, you’ll get to choose up to 7 different dishes of your choice to prepare. From classics like Pad Thai and sticky mango rice to trickier dishes like Thai Green Curry, spring rolls, and Tom Yam soup – you name it.

During the 3 hour class, you’ll learn a bit more about all the various ingredients and herbs, how to prepare each dish, and of course (the best part) sample the fruits of your labour!

Whether you’re a novice in the kitchen or an avid home cook, joining a cooking class is undeniably one of the  best things to do in Ao Nang !

Foodie Travels in Cambodia

Khmer cuisine along the tonle sap river in phom penh.

Khmer food market

Cambodia is known for its diverse and dark history, from the temples of Angkor Wat to the memorials of Pol Pot’s reign. However, the food in Cambodia is yet another great reason to visit, and the capital, Phnom Penh, is arguably the best place to experience it.

Khmer cuisine is similar to other cuisines in Southeast Asia, with some of the most popular dishes including bbq meats, noodle soups, curries and stir-fries. Most dishes aim to find the perfect balance of sweet, salty and spicy.

For us, we found exploring the street food markets and roadside stalls one of the best  things to do in Phnom Penh  and the most exciting way to enjoy the best food in Cambodia.

There are plenty of markets with amazing food in Phnom Penh, but the Phnom Penh Night Market located along the Tonle Sap river is the most popular.

When you first enter the market, you can expect to find hundreds of stalls selling typical wares, but the food section is the best part. A huge area, covered with mats, is designated for dining. Along the perimeter of the mats are stalls selling all kinds of Cambodian foods, including bbq meat on skewers and noodle dishes, as well as some of our favourite Khmer dishes such as  lok lak  and  amok .

A Foodie Adventure in the Philippines

Food markets for adventurous eaters in cebu.

Cebu foodie experiences

Cebu is amongst the best places in the Philippines for street food. Apart from the (in)famous Filipino balut (a fertilized duck embryo), you can also have authentic and delicious food experiences in the local markets.

Colon ,  Carbon,  and  Pasil  markets are the best food markets in Cebu for adventurous foodies. For the best experience, I recommend going on a guided food tour.

We enjoyed strolling around with our guides, being quite the attraction for the locals. We tried some very unique food during our tour.

Fried pork intestines with corn grits tasted better than it sounded to me. Chicken barbecue was an easy and delicious one. The Nilarang fish soup we had was so rich and tasty! Sautéd pork brain with hanging rice was not my favourite, except for the rice.

A food tour has to be finished off with a dessert, right? That’s why we had a caramelized banana, which was a real delicacy.

Overall, the  food in Cebu  is beautifully diverse, but you need to dig under the surface of the Cebu food scene and join a local tour. I went with Backstreet Academy and loved it.

Cebu’s modern food market, Sugbo Mercado, shouldn’t be missed either.

Enter Bangkok Food Tours, your culinary tour guide, celebrated for our top-notch service by throngs of delighted foodies. Let us whisk you away on an extraordinary adventure with one of our day tours in Bangkok, “Offbeat Floating Markets Food Tour.” Embrace the unique charms of three Thai floating markets where you can enjoy fresh produce and traditional local delicacies. We even sneak in a visit to the renowned Mae Klong Railway Market, where a train astonishingly zips right through the marketplace! These floating markets, a stone’s throw from the Gulf of Thailand, are prized for tantalizing seafood dishes, made fresh by local cooks. Relish the array of mouth-watering treats, some sizzling right on the boats! What to Expect The tour is approximately 6 to 7 hours long and starts bright and early to catch the markets at their liveliest. It’s ideal for small groups for an intimate experience and is suitable for all ages, including children. Our tour package includes all food tastings, boat rides, a local guide, and round-trip transportation. For the best experience, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring your camera and an appetite for when you explore these attractions: Amphawa Floating Market A true gem of a floating market in Samut Songkhram, Amphawa is renowned for its quaint charm and old wooden shops. As you glide through the canal, expect to see houses on stilts and vendors selling an array of traditional Thai food and handicrafts. The market’s vibrant evening atmosphere is enhanced by the aroma of grilled seafood, such as prawns, squid, and shellfish, making it a culinary adventure. Bang Noi Floating Market This market near Amphawa presents a more traditional and historical experience, having been an important trading spot along the Mae Klong River. Bang Noi is less crowded and more relaxed, allowing a genuine glimpse into the past. The old wooden houses and shops that line the waterways add to its charm, offering a picturesque backdrop to your exploration. Tha Kha Floating Market This market is considered to have preserved its authentic, local quality and is less frequented by tourists. However, Tha Kha lets you experience a floating market in a more traditional village setting. This market, active for a few days around the lunar calendar, offers a quieter and more serene experience. Local vendors paddle their small boats, selling products ranging from local farm produce of vegetables and fruits to humble, home-cooked meals. Mae Klong Railway Market A highlight feature of our tour is the visit to the Mae Klong Railway Market or Hoop Rom. Marvel at the sight of a train passing swiftly through the market at designated times, with vendors deftly moving their goods and awnings to make way. This unique phenomenon showcases the vibrancy of Thai markets and the adaptability of the local people. Reasons to Visit Thai Floating Markets A Culinary Adventure Thai floating markets are culinary hotspots where you can indulge in a wide range of local dishes, from fresh seafood to sweet Thai desserts. Visitors will get to experience authentic Thai street food in its most traditional form, with dishes and delicacies prepared right on the boats. A Cultural Immersion A visit to a local floating market is a feast for your taste buds, as well as a closer glimpse into the local way of life. As you weave through waterways, you’ll see local vendors on wooden boats adorned with vibrant produce, easily a living postcard of Thailand. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the Thai lifestyle and the historical significance of these markets as a central hub for communities to engage in trading and commerce. Our floating market food tour includes a serene rowboat ride into an orchard showcasing traditional coconut palm sugar production. Visitors will surely be swept up by the nostalgic ambiance of the markets, with the traditional flavors of local Thai cuisine among the sturdy wooden shops and homes taking you on a time-travel journey to the 1960s. A Shopping Experience Thai floating markets are ideal for purchasing local handicrafts, fresh produce, and unique souvenirs. By shopping and eating at these markets, you contribute to the local economy and support small vendors in the community. It’s also a great opportunity to have genuine interaction with the locals. Floating markets are enjoyable for visitors of all ages and are a family-friendly experience. Join Bangkok Food Tours and tick off this incredible experience from your Thailand bucket list. Book your day tours in Bangkok today and prepare for a trip that’s as uniquely flavorful and colorful as it is unforgettable! Uncover Yaowarat’s Best Thai-Chinese Street Food Spots

  • December 7, 2023

Welcome to Yaowarat Road in Bangkok’s Chinatown, widely regarded as one of the city’s best epicenters for Thai and Chinese street food. Renowned for its neon-lit streets, it’s a common sight to see long queues forming as the evening settles in. These queues are filled with eager foodies, all patiently waiting for their chance to savor the distinct flavors offered by the numerous unique restaurants that Chinatown boasts. In this blog, we’ll guide you through a tantalizing tour of Chinatown’s most celebrated culinary stars. Culinary Stars in Bangkok’s Chinatown Bangkok Chinatown’s streets are lined with street food that has carved a niche in the hearts of locals and tourists alike. Here’s a sneak peek at some of these gems: Guay Jub Ouan Pochana (Bib Gourmand): A landmark for over 50 years, this stall, located in front of China Town Rama Cinema in Yaowarat, is a hotspot for those seeking authentic Thai street food. It’s best known for its ‘Guay Jub’ – traditional rolled rice noodles in a hot, peppery broth. The soup’s intense peppery flavor is said to be so strong that it could clear a blocked nose, offering a unique experience for first-timers. Khao Phad Pu Chang Phueak (Bib Gourmand): Located opposite 142 Yaowarat Road, this Thai street food cart is a go-to place for fried rice lovers. Their signature dish, Khao Phad Pu – crab fried rice, is praised for its slightly oily texture, a hallmark of good fried rice, and the generous, well-prepared chunks of crab meat that require no tedious shell or bone picking. The dish is further enhanced by a smokey aroma and topped with fresh coriander, complementing the crab meat. Lim Lao Ngow (Bib Gourmand): With over 60 years in the business, this family-run eatery boasts several branches, but the original location is in Chinatown. They are celebrated for their bouncy fish balls, made from fresh fish without added flour, and served with Chinese noodles and wontons. The fish balls leave a joyful aftertaste, living up to their reputation. Nai Ek Roll Noodles (Michelin Plate): From a pushcart in Chinatown, Nai Ek has evolved over half a century into a Michelin Plate-recognized eatery. The highlight here is the aromatic black pepper soup used for the Guay Jub, with minced garlic and coriander giving it an extra edge. Their menu includes various pork dishes, including entrails, blood soup, and crispy pork. The crispy pork belly, deep-fried to ensure a crunchy skin, is a star dish here. Pa Tong Go Savoey (Michelin Plate): This eatery specializes in Chinese-style fried doughnuts, known for being fried to perfection. These doughnuts make a delightful snack while exploring Chinatown’s vibrant streets. Bangkok Food Tours: Your Gateway to Chinatown’s Delights Craving more? Slurping Through Thailand: Top Thai Noodle Dishes To Try!

  • November 27, 2023

Welcome to the street food capital of the world – Thailand! An integral part of the Thai street food scene here is the endless variety of noodles dishes available. These strands of yum are more than just food – they amalgamate cultures, traditions, innovation, and oh-so-good flavors. However, with this many choices available, it can feel overwhelming. Let’s start with our top five recommended popular Thai noodle dishes for you to explore. Top 5 Popular Types Of Thai Noodle Dishes 1. Goong Ob Woon Sen Imagine a dish where delicate glass noodles meet the succulence of whole shrimp. That’s Goong Ob Woon Sen for you! Traditionally cooked in clay pots, this popular Thai noodle dish features tiger prawns or freshwater shrimps harmoniously blended with soy sauce, peppercorns, coriander, and ginger. Some versions might surprise you with bacon, oyster sauce, garlic, or other tantalizing herbs and spices. A Chinese culinary influence is evident, but today, this dish is a star of Thailand’s seafood cuisine. 2. Yam Wun Sen For our next stop, enter Yam Wun Sen, a salad that’s like a refreshing cool breeze on a hot day. This glass noodle salad has bright, zesty flavors and a delightful crunch. It mixes glass noodles, fried garlic, cilantro, chili peppers, dried shrimp, and more, dressed in lime juice and fish sauce. Adding ground pork or beef turns it into a protein-rich feast. This popular Thai noodle dish is typically enjoyed cold or lukewarm and is a summer favorite in Thailand. 3. Khao Soi Northern Thailand’s creamy dream, Khao Soi, is where coconut meets curry in a divine soup. This type of Northern Thai noodle dish is a medley of influences, featuring a slightly spicy broth with coconut milk and red curry paste. Served with flat egg noodles and a choice of meats like chicken, beef, or pork, it’s garnished with crispy fried noodles and fresh cilantro. Accompanied by lime, pickled cabbage, shallots, and chilis, each spoonful will have you going wowza! 4. Yen Ta Fo You may have spotted these colorful, bright pink noodle bowls on street stalls during your explorations in Thailand – they are hard to miss! Yen Ta Fo is a visual and gastronomic delight. This pink noodle soup is vibrant thanks to fermented red bean curd, promising a delightful array of flavors and textures. It contains different noodles in a rich chicken or pork broth, topped with fish balls, squid, shrimp, tofu, and water morning glory, making it a hearty and satisfying main course. 5. Pad Thai Saving the poster child of popular Thai noodle dishes for last – your noodle tour will be incomplete without the famous Pad Thai! This national dish, born from a quest for culinary identity, is a stir-fried marvel combining rice noodles, tofu, dried shrimp, bean sprouts, and eggs. With chicken or pork, it’s a dance of sweet, sour, and salty flavors. The textures, history, and taste – Pad Thai is quintessential Thailand on a plate. However, these five types of Thai noodle dishes are merely a drop in the ocean among the actual number of varieties available on the Thai food scene. A History of Moscow in 13 Dishes

Jun 06 2018.

War, hunger, and some of the world’s great doomed social experiments all changed the way that Moscow eats.

Moscow, the European metropolis on Asia’s western flank, has always been a canvas for competing cultures. Its cuisine is no different. The ancient baselines of winter grains, root vegetables, and cabbage acquired scaffolding from both directions: eastern horsemen brought meat on sticks, western craftsmen brought pastries, and courtly French chefs came and drowned it all in cream.

History has a place on the plate here, as well: war, hunger, and some of the world’s great doomed social experiments from Serfdom to Communism to Bandit Capitalism all changed the way that Moscow eats. So in the spirit of all of those grand failures, we—a Russian chef and an American writer—will attempt here to reduce the towering history of this unknowable city to 13 dishes, with some Imperial past but a special emphasis on the more recent decades of culinary paroxysms as Moscow emerged from its Soviet slumber.

Olivier Salad

asia food tour

To visualize the long marriage between French and Russian cuisines, picture Peter the Great, on a diplomatic sojourn to Paris in 1717, a “ stranger to etiquette ”, meeting the 7-year-old boy-king Louis XV and lifting him in the air out of sheer elán. These things were simply not done, and yet, there they were. Peter’s joyful (and often envious) fascination with all things French took hold, among other places, in the kitchen. He brought French chefs back to his palaces, and then the lesser nobility followed suit, and when the first restaurants emerged in Moscow, they also spoke French. The Hermitage Restaurant, which was open from 1864 until history intervened in 1917, had a Francophone Belgian named Lucien Olivier as a chef, and he made a salad that was a perfectly unrestrained combination of French flavors and Russian ingredients: grouse! Veal tongue! Proto-mayonnaise! The ingredients now tend toward the pedestrian—boiled beef, dill pickles, various vegetables all bound with mayonnaise—and it has become a staple of Russian cuisine, especially on New Year’s. And yes, if you’ve ever seen the lonely Ensalada Rusa wilting behind the sneezeguard of a Spanish tapas bar, that is supposed to be a successor to the Olivier. But in Moscow, you should eat Matryoshka ’s version, which is not the original recipe but has some of that imperial richness: crayfish, quail, sturgeon caviar, and remoulade, all under a translucent aspic skirt, for 990₽ ($16).

There’s a type of expression around bottling things—bottled lightning, summer in a jar, etc.—that feels very apt here. What exactly is bottled with vareniye (jam)? A lot more than just fruit. These jams, which tend to be thinner than western varieties—with whole berries or fruit chunks in syrup—are bottled with a lot of Russian identity. There’s the Russian love of countryside. Deep dacha culture of summer cottages and personal orchards. Traditional naturopathy (raspberry vareniye taken with tea will fight fever). And above all, friendship is bottled here— vareniye made from the overabundance of fruit at one’s dacha is the most typical Russian gift, real sharing from real nature, even in the often-cynical heart of Europe’s largest megacity. Visitors who are short on lifelong friendships in Moscow can pick some up fine vareniye at any Lavka Lavka shop (we recommend the delicate young pine cone jam) or, curiously enough, at many Armenian stores.

Borodinsky Bread

asia food tour

The clinical-sounding title of Lev Auerman’s 1935 classic Tekhnologiya Khlebopecheniya ( Bread Baking Technology) doesn’t promise scintillation. But Auerman’s recipe for rye bread changed Russian bread forever. An older legend had it that the bread was baked dark for mourning by a woman widowed in the battle of Borodino in 1812, but the real birth of the bread came from Auerman’s recipes. A modification on sweet, malted Baltic breads, Auerman’s Borodinsky bread was 100% rye and used caraway or anise. The recipe has evolved a bit—today it is 80% rye and 20% wheat high extraction flour and leans more on coriander than caraway. But its flavor profile (sweet, chewy) as well as its characteristic L7 mold —a deep brick of bread—has made it easily identifiable as the traditional, ubiquitous, every-occasion bread of Moscow. You can buy it everywhere, but the Azbuka Vkusa high-end markets have a reliably good sliced version.

Buckwheat Grechka

Look closely at those Russians who have followed their money to live in London, or are vacationing in Cyprus or Antalya. See the slight melancholy that not even cappuccinos or sunshine can erase. It’s not because Russians are gloomy by nature; it’s probably because there is no real grechka outside of Russia and Ukraine, and that is devastating. Buckwheat grain and groats— grechka (or grecha in Saint Petersburg)—are deep in the culture. It’s a wartime memory: May 9 Victory Day celebrations feature military kitchens serving buckwheat like they did at the front. It’s a little slice of Russian history that lies somewhere between oatmeal and couscous. In Moscow, eat it at Dr. Zhivago with milk (180₽/US$2.90) or mushrooms (590₽/US$9.50), and rejoice.

Mimoza Salad

asia food tour

This fantastically expressive egg-and-canned-fish salad is a testament to Soviet ingenuity—it’s the ultimate puzzle to make a drastically limited food chain sparkle—and the universal human thrill of layering foods. The geological creation starts with a base layer of fish, then layers of grated cooked potato, mayonnaise, shredded cheese, grated carrots, sweet onion, diced egg whites and then capped with a brilliant yellow crumble of boiled egg yolk. It sits there on the plate, dazzling like the flowering mimosa tree it is named after. The taste? Well, it’s comfort food. Pick some up to go at any Karavaev Brothers location —the excellent deli chain sells it for 650₽ (US$10.40) a kilo.

It seems odd, almost impossible, to imagine a time in Russia before shashlik. It’s meat on a stick, something that all humans should have had on the menu since at least the time of Prometheus. But shashlik as we know it know—cubes of marinated meat cooked with vegetables over a mangal grill—didn’t really take off in Russia until the early 1900s. And due to a lack of suitable meat in much of the Soviet era (there were no meat cattle herds, only dairy), we’re starting the clock on shashlik in the late Soviet period. Despite its relatively recent (re)appearance, it is now the ubiquitous grill phenomenon of Russia, a welcome ritual of summer.

asia food tour

Much of Russian cuisine has borrowed heavily from Central Asia and further east over the millennia ( pelmeni anyone?), but plov is a striking example of an entire eastern dish making its way directly into Russian households. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and upheaval in many Central Asian Soviet Republics, mass economic migration to Moscow took off in the late 80s and early 90s. Central Asians today are the lifeblood of the Moscow labor force (part of up to 10-12 million Central Asian migrants living in Russia), and plov—rice steamed in stock with meat and vegetables—has jumped from the migrant communities to the homes of Muscovites everywhere. It has developed an unfortunate reputation for being a food that even finicky kids will eat, so there is a lot of harried domestic plov being made. But you can get a fully expressed Uzbek version at Danilovsky Market, online at plov.com , or at Food City—the surf-and-turf Tsukiji of Moscow.

The Big Mac

asia food tour

So many of the difficulties in American-Russian relations come down to one foundational attitude problem: The Americans (that’s half of this writing duo) were incredibly, distressingly smug through the entire fall of the Soviet Union. We mistook Soviet failure for an American victory, and that made all the difference. What does that have to do with a Big Mac? Well, when Russia’s first McDonald’s opened on Pushkinskaya in 1990 and 5000 people turned out to wait in line for the first taste of America, we back home in the states mistook it for culinary and commercial superiority. But there was something more complicated happening: Russians had been denied Western goods for so long and with such force that any outside identity was much-needed oxygen. And the long-term victory, as McDonald’s has continued to thrive in post-Soviet Russia, really belongs to the local franchise, which used higher-quality ingredients than in the U.S. and created a chain that was successful not because of its American identity but because of its Russian modifications. We wouldn’t recommend eating at any McDonald’s, especially not when there is Teremok for your fast-food needs, but having a soda in the original location is one way to sit and ponder the sin of hubris. And to use the free toilet and Wi-Fi.

The crown jewel of Levantine meat preparations, perhaps the single greatest street meat in the world: Shawarma. It first came to Moscow with a shawarma joint across from the Passazh mall, opened in the early 90s by Syrian cooks who dazzled masses with their sizzling, spinning, spiced meat emporium. Lines that stretched into the hundreds of people weren’t uncommon in those heady early days. And even though the original spot closed many years ago, Moscow shawarma only grew from there, mutating into the beast it is today, where you’re likely to find chicken, cabbage, mayo and a thin tomato sauce all combining to make the Levant a distant memory.

Fish Tartare aka Sashimi

One result of the aforementioned American smugness is that the West seemed surprised at how rapidly 1990s Russia assimilated some of the most hardcore capitalist traits, including but not limited to conspicuous consumerism. Moscow’s new elite was very, very good at that. What could be more conspicuous that recreating a restrained, exclusive seafood cuisine from Japan in the chaotic, landlocked megacity of Moscow? The very improbability of high-end sushi and sashimi in Moscow fueled much of its allure, and even though the trends have moved on from sushi, you can still tell the emotional attachment that the oligarch class has to those formative wastes of money. Sumosan restaurant started in Moscow back in 1997 and has since expanded to Monte Carlo and Londongrad , where they serve a dish that they call Fish Tartare, among others, in their restaurants and through their private jet catering service.

Blue Cheese roll

If the early elite sushi restaurants in Moscow were the frivolous edge of a food phenomenon, then Yakitoriya , a chain which started in the late 1990s, democratized it with affordable sushi rolls geared to local tastes. The Blue Cheese Roll, available now on their menu, seems like the apex (or nadir) of the Russianized roll: salmon, smoked eel, cucumber, cream cheese, Blue Cheese sauce. It might not be Jiro’s dream, but a true Russian middle class, one that can work honestly, earn meaningful salaries, and have a freaky sushi roll at the end of the week just like the rest of us—that’s something worthing dreaming for. Blue Cheese Roll, Yakitoriya, 417₽ (US$6.70)

asia food tour

If you’re American, have you ever wondered why tacos took over middle America but sopes remain virtually unknown? It’s curious how a country can assimilate some foods from their neighbors and but remain blissfully ignorant of others. That may explain what took place two years ago in Moscow, when the city seemingly discovered, as if for the first time, the bagged awesomeness that is khinkali , a soup dumpling from Russia’s southern neighbor Georgia. It became very trendy very quickly, and khinkali joints sprouted across Moscow like griby after a rain. But it wasn’t just that dish: what they were serving was a bit of the imagined southern, sybaritic lifestyle of the Caucasus, as promised in restaurant names like Est’ Khinkali Pit Vino ( Eat Khinkali Drink Wine ). Your best bets are at the stately Sakhli , around 100₽ (US$1.60) per soft, fulsome dumpling, or the more modernized Kafe Khinkalnaya on Neglinnaya Street , 100₽ (US$0.80) a dumpling.

We have named burrata—yes, that Italian alchemy of cheese and cream—the Perfect Dish of Moscow 2018, if only because it is the Dish of the Moment, ready to be enjoyed at the height of its faddishness now, and equally ready to be replaced when the city decides to move on. Read Anna Maslovskaya’s masterful breakdown of why—and where—to eat burrata in Moscow.

Although I had to cancel my first appointment and rebook for another day, but everything was arranged comfortably. It was great having Andrew as my guide, in addition to his fluent English, he is punctual, polite and well informed about all details. He would use every single moment to make sure that everything is going as planned and he was always prepared to provide assistance whenever required. We took the metro from my hotel to the shooting range, everything was properly organized. By the time we arrived to the shooting center, the crew were not ready yet to start (waited 15 minutes), however, Andrew made sure to make use of this time via explaining some of the safety measures and guide lines in order not to waste this time in our time slot and to make sure I enjoy every bit of it and focus on just shooting. It was my first time shooting guns, but I still received the necessary training and instructions from the instructors in addition to the usual assistance by my guide Andrew. In conclusion, I enjoyed the whole experience and would definitely recommend it to gun shooting lovers. Read more Written November 29, 2021

(Almost felt like he was a historian and not a guide) he answered every question in detail plus more, which helped provide a better understanding of Russian culture. We got to tour Sergiev Posad and the many monasteries surrounding the area with impressive architecture. Lastly, the Banya experience which i would highly recommend if you’re in Moscow. Overall this experience was outstanding, and if you ever get to tour with those two, you’re definitely in for a ride. Read more Written October 22, 2021

  • Frequent_Flyer1978 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The absolute best experience we have ever had I’m being factual (as opposed to melodramatic) when I say I have never ever had an experience like visiting the monastery with our guide, Sergei, from Put-in Tours. This review will cover both the monastery and the guide. The monastery is a bit of a drive but it’s not too far from Moscow’s city center. There are a few basic rules like no eating or drinking, no smoking on the premises, no selfies or disrespectful photos. Obviously, this is an active place of worship with monks and pupils live and pray so visitors have to be perfectly respectful regardless of their own beliefs. Keep in mind that the monastery is obliging visitors simply because they need the income to operate the magnificent facility. One thing to add here, we are Muslim and my wife wears hijab but we never felt unwelcome. The tour basically covers the history of the churches in cathedrals in the complex including the interior where you get a wealth of information about the ancient history of the buildings as well as the Soviet era when religions were banned and churches closed, sabotaged or demolished as well as recent history following the fall of communism and the lifting of religious restrictions. One particularly interesting aspect in this part of the tour is the climb up to the bell tower through extremely steep and narrow stairs but the view is more than worth the climb. Following this, you will be seated in a section of the monks dining hall. An apprentice will greet you and say prayers before you sit for a full meal that includes 2 salads, soup, main course, desert and traditional tea. The apprentice will come after the meal and offer to answer any questions you may have about the monastery. We were expected to spend 10 minutes max during this question and answer part but we spent almost an hour and left with many questions but we were ashamed to have kept the apprentice awake so late when he certainly must wake up in the early morning to prepare food for the monks. A quick walk through the monastery follows with brief history of other structures that were added at later stages to the monastery complex. Now, my favorite part of this review: the guide. We were blissfully lucky to have had Sergei from Put-in Tours. I wouldn’t know about other guides but Sergei was far, far beyond great. For lack of a better word, he was a gift from god. He knew practically everything about the history of the place and whatever he didn’t know he didn’t pretend to know and give us false information but rather he asked the monastery staff and got a full answer. He spoke fluent English (very rare in Moscow where virtually no one speaks English let alone speaks good English). On the ride in and out he was extremely friendly, sparked good conversations and was incredibly accommodating even though we over stayed the schedule by at least an hour. He translated instantly during the monk apprentice questions session and he even filled in the gaps when we had nothing to ask or say. My wife and I whispered to each other a few times “wow he is really a great guy”. We had some doubts about Put-in Tours (there was a bit of confusion earlier and plans were changed on short notice) but I confidently say Sergei was the best guide we’ve ever met in all our travels through the entirety of the Middle East, south east Asia, Europe and America. Words simply cannot describe our gratitude and appreciation. Overall, this is an absolute must-go in Moscow. I rate it 10/10. Read more Written September 30, 2021

Andrew was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and fun to talk to! He gave us just the right amount of insight about the Russian culture, Banya, and the life of Sergiev Possad. He did not bombard us with a history lesson. Anton was extremely skillfully and knowledgeable as well. Banya is a great experience and highly recommended to travellers looking to do something offbeat while in Moscow. All in all, it was a great experience. Much recommended! 👍🏽 Read more Written September 2, 2021
  • Beardy96521 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Can only be recommended! Awesome Experience!!! We drove on a BMP-1 Soviet Tank, shot a RPG-22,AK-47 and an SKS-45. I threw a grenade at an Armored vehicle and wore an WW2 era Soviet Helmet during the whole thing. We were allowed to handle Soviet Weapons like Mosin Nagants, SKS-45, Markarov pistols or AK47s. Everybody was very nice and friendly. In the Museum we got to see a wide variety of rare tanks like a German King Tiger or Soviet Su-100Y, outside a lot of Soviet Tanks and Aircraft can be seen. I also tested an T-80 tank driving simulator, it was a lot of fun. The whole experience lasted an entire day and everybody was very happy at the end. Can only be recommended! We went to all the major sights in Moscow and I was given good information about what I was seeing. Any question I wanted answered they knew. Because time wasn’t a consideration, they even added a few stops just to make my experience more enjoyable. I would recommend this company to anybody I know. The door to door hotel pickup is also awesome. Read more Written June 22, 2021
