aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Aulani Resort & Spa Room Review: 1-Bedroom Villa

Aulani — A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii has a wide variety of hotel room and Disney Vacation Club villas. During our recent visit to Aulani, we had the chance to stay with friends in a 1-bedroom villa. We fell in love with Aulani, and although we certainly will be back (probably just us in a studio next time), we thought we would share a review and some photos of the 1-bedroom villa in case anyone else is considering it.

In total, there were four adults in our party, and the 1-bedroom villa was perfectly suitable for us. I think it would work well for 2 couples sharing a single room (just agree in advance who gets the master bedroom!), and would be ideal for a family of 2 adults and 2-3 kids. While there are some layout issues that I think are less than ideal in the Aulani 1-bedroom villas (see below), I think overall they are an excellent room option if you’re looking for something more spacious than a standard studio room, or want the full kitchen and ability to do laundry in-room.

For us, the big appeal of the rooms at Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa is the well-rounded design. Disney has always been faced with the task of balancing theme and luxury in its more expensive hotel rooms, and often luxury takes a backseat to theme. The same cannot be said at Aulani, where Disney perfectly performs the balancing act. In our Aulani Trip Planning Guide , we theorized that this was out of necessity. Aulani doesn’t have the “crutch” of being an on-site hotel to a nearby Disney theme park, and it faces intense competition from real-world luxury hotel brands in Hawaii and generally more discerning travelers. Thus, Disney had to hit every high note in order for Aulani to be competitive among luxury resorts in Hawaii.

Since Aulani is a true resort, and not just a hotel masquerading as a resort, we aren’t going to attempt to lump the rooms themselves with the other amenities of the hotel. There are simply too many “other amenities” and the 1-bedroom villa has enough to cover in a single post, anyway. We’ll be back with additional posts to hit on some of the entertainment and amenity options at Aulani in a future post.

With that said, let’s take a look at the various areas of the Aulani 1-bedroom villa…

aulani-kitchen

The kitchen was gorgeous, but it was admittedly a bit lost on us since all we did was use the fridge to store “breakfast cupcakes,” soda, and make coffee. With that said, the kitchen is everything I could imagine wanting from a villa kitchen. The appliances are stainless steel, the countertops are granite, and the cabinets are a nice, rich wood. As you can see, it looks great.

aulani-kitchen-table

Next to the kitchen is the kitchen table, which is nicely upholstered with a traditional Hawaiian design. The table-top itself isn’t all that interesting, but maybe plain here is better than going for another pattern. At the right edge of the frame is the closet where the washer and dryer are located.

living-room-aulani

Doing a 180 from the table is the main living area. The sofa is a queen pullout bed. All of the furniture here great texture and patterns. It all feels substantial and well made. Same goes for the carpet. I know it might seem like a stretch to praise the carpet, but it felt thick and nicely textured. Just a minor thing, but here all of the minor things add up.

aulani-room-balcony

There are two separate doors to access the balcony, and a total of four chairs and two tables out there. Here’s a partial look at our view from the balcony. The top photo in this post provides a better look at our view. We spent a ton of time on the balcony just looking out over the resort. We could clearly hear the live music playing below in the evening hours from the balcony, which made the balcony the perfect place to unwind at night.

aulani-master-bedroom

Here’s a view of the master bedroom. Note the wall hangs with authentic Hawaiian designs and the detailed headboard. These stuck out as nice details, but really everywhere in the room from the fixtures to the types of wood to the trim to even the thickness of the walls, you could tell Disney did not skimp or cut corners. This is unlike Deluxe Resorts at Walt Disney World where you’d expect a certain quality (given the price point), but instead corners in certain places are sometimes cut. I can’t think of any cut corners at Aulani. The decor and style may not satisfy everyone, but it’s indisputable that a great effort was undertaken.

aulani-surfing-mickey-lamp

There are plenty of Disney details throughout the room, but they are mostly subtle and could go unnoticed by those not looking for them. This is a good thing, we think, as Aulani excels in its historical and cultural accuracy, and that shouldn’t be overshadowed by Mickey Mouse.

disney-aulani-resort-spa-098

Like everything in the room, the runners on the bed are high quality, and well-designed.

master-bed-tv-aulani

This should give you an idea of the layout of the master bedroom and its relation to the main living area. Outside the frame to the right is the master bathroom.

aulani-bathrobe

One of the nicest in-room amenities is the set of Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa bathrobes. These things are insanely high quality. Seriously, wear one of these out on the balcony and you’ll feel like a clean version of Hef overlooking your kingdom.

aulani-bathroom

The shower is incredibly spacious and features dual heads. In terms of design, it almost feels like a “spa shower,” assuming that’s a real thing.

disney-aulani-resort-spa-097

Don’t worry Disney toiletry connoisseurs, Aulani has you covered with a slew of soaps ‘n’ stuff!

aulani-bathtub

My big complaint in terms of layout is the shared master bathroom. Disney Vacation Club members are probably familiar with this design, as it was the layout used for Saratoga Springs Resort and older 1-bedroom villas at Walt Disney World. However, the newer units have gone with a full bathroom attached to the master bedroom and another full bathroom outside the main area. Really, though, this is a matter of preference. If you’re just 2 adults choosing the 1-bedroom for its additional space, you will probably like the master bathroom layout found here. If you have a herd of children or several people simultaneously jockeying for bathroom time, this arrangement will be less desirable. This is just a minor quibble in the grand scheme of things, but it’s still an issue worth mentioning. Other than that, layout-wise, Aulani’s 1-bedroom rooms are quite nice.

disney-aulani-resort-spa-096

The question, as with any Disney hotel room, is how much all of this matters. In the case of Aulani, we think the answer is going to be “a lot” for most guests. Since Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa is a true resort experience rather than a hotel adjacent to a set of theme parks, there’s a far greater likelihood guests staying at Aulani are actually going to be staying at Aulani for a good deal of time. In other words, this resort is not just a place where most guests will shower and sleep, and there’s or part of a more comprehensive trip or experience put on by Disney, but it’s not “just” a hotel, either. The most apt comparison we can think of is to other resort complexes on Oahu, or in other tropical settings that offer a multitude of things to do on the premises, but really are best enjoyed alongside other experiences in that locale. It’s also somewhat like a cruise ship on land.

Overall, Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa ranks right up there with hotels like the Grand Floridian and Grand Californian in terms of cost (or exceeds them), but it also offers so much more than any US Disney resort-hotel in terms of quality. The rooms are incredibly nice, and successfully blend luxury with themed accommodations. This is something with which we find Disney constantly struggles, and the balance is not an easy proposition. Aulani just works in both regards and it’s clear that Disney did not approach Aulani with the mentality of trying to cut corners where it was felt guests may not notice. Here, everything is just flat-out well done. The rooms are artfully and tastefully decorated, feeling culturally appropriate, but also with the type of high quality furnishings, fixtures, and design that you’d expect of a luxury hotel. It’s exceedingly rare for us to say this about Disney hotels, but Aulani’s rooms nail both luxury and theme. Now, this isn’t to say that some people still won’t like the style of Aulani’s rooms (you should be able to easily tell by the photos), but we feel they are very well done.

Also unanswered is whether a trip to Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa is right for you and your party in the first place. Even if the room is nice and you like it, Aulani is a destination that just isn’t for everyone. Hi, Tom- Question about the pullout bed at Aulani. Is it comfortable or is there that annoying rod in your back? I feel like you never know what you’re gonna get with soda beds!

' src=

Great report of the 1 Bedroom Vila. Very informative! Can you share the specific location, building and floor #, of this room? I’ve seen some pictures where the balcony of a 1 bedroom villa consists of 2 small balconies, instead of the 1 long balcony like you show in your picture. Is there a certain way to request the longer balcony (which is my preference)? Is it possible that single/long balcony is limited to certain floors? Thank you

' src=

Hi Tom. Thanks for the review and all of the info you provide. My question is about the sleeping arrangements in the 1BR. I have a 13yr old daughter and a 16 yr old son who are now too old to sleep on the pull out sofa together. They are listed “sleeps 5”. Is there a chair that turns into a bed or a Murphy bed like they have in the new studios at Boardwalk? Can’t seem to find this answer anywhere

' src=

Walt– Yup, they miss it in the review, but the base of the living area TV unit is a Murphy bed. I don’t know about Boardwalk, but it’s just like the 1BR at the Grand Californian. My 5’8″ son prefers the Murphy bed to the foldout sofa.

' src=

Appreciate all the info you have shared. We have a trip coming up fast, my family of 5 will be traveling to Aulani for my son’s birthday. We made a mistake and invited my teenage daughters friend with us and later realized the 1 bedroom villa only accommodates 5 people. I’m a little stressed as we want to make this a fun trip but hope we don’t have issues accessing the pool, shows, restaurants, etc.

Can you share any insights on the pools? How “strict” are they with the wristbands? Is that really enforced?

Thanks much!

' src=

I have the same question

' src=

We are debating between the studio and 1 bedroom villa for our upcoming stay at Aulani. I would prefer more space the 1 bedroom offers but it comes with a price tag of $150 extra per night.

We are staying for 5 nights (2 adults and 2 children 5 year old). Would you recommend the studio or 1 bedroom for us?

' src=

Hi there, thank you for sharing. I am thinking about getting a 1 bedroom villa for my daughter’s 5th birthday this March. I am a local so I thought about having my family come up to the villa just to have dinner, you know, sing happy birthday & have some ice cream! I know 5 overnight guests are allowed, but how many people do you think could the villa fit? Just to entertain for a few hours. I have a fairly large family and I don’t think they mind being squished but I just want to be sure we’re all comfortable for that two hours. Thanks!!!!

' src=

Hmmm…that’s hard to judge, but I think you could probably entertain around 12 people in a 1-BR villa without feeling squished. Maybe more if some people are hanging out in the bedroom.

' src=

We visited Aulani in June 2014 for our 15th Wedding Anniversary. We are DVC members, but paid cash for our room because all the studios were booked at the 7 month window. When we arrived, they upgraded us to a 1-bedroom villa. What a wonderful surprise! We have always booked a studio room, so we were very impressed with the 1-bedroom. We left our 2 boys (ages 10 and 5) at home with my parents for this trip, but had many Face Time sessions walking around the resort with them so they could see and experience it too. (I also might have a very embarrassing video of myself and a trip down the waterslide that they have watched over and over again.) Anywho…they especially enjoyed all the hidden Menehune, we enjoy looking for hidden Mickeys at the parks, and I thought this was a nice touch of Disney magic at Aluani. We totally agree, Aulani is our new favorite Disney resort as well!! Disney’s attention to detail always blow us away!

' src=

Wow…!!!!!! Its awesome post. So nice and beautiful resident. I love this, and also want to live here for few months. Keep sharing such an wonderful blog.

' src=

can’t wait for more aulani posts! will be there next month!

' src=

Beautiful photos, as always, Tom! I’m appreciative of the in-depth room tour, as I’ve been curious about Aulani…. very excited to hear that it’s a more luxurious resort than the typical Disney Vacation Club units. Also, the fuschia accent color used throughout the unit is lovely.

Agree on the color choices used at Aulani. They did a great job all around on this resort.

' src=

Aloha, Tom! I have been checking your site frequently the past few weeks, as I have been planning a trip to WDW in December. I currently live in Honolulu at Hickam AFB, and my family and I are moving to FL in about a month. I can’t wait to take my 3 very young kids to Disney for the first time. I am doing a ton of planning/research. Anyway, we haven’t made it out to Aulani yet, and probably won’t be able to, since we aren’t DVC members, and we would rather save that money to spend at WDW. We can use the beaches at Ko Olina anytime- in fact, we were there just this weekend. We did stay out at the Marriot there, without a kitchen, and hated paying so much for the food in the resort area. Thanks so much for all of the great advice on your site!

Just wanted to add that I always admire the beautiful Aulani building when we are in the Ko Olina area! It’s just amazing.

Before you move, you really ought to drop into Aulani to check the place out. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s well worth seeing. Maybe grab a meal or something there!

Hi! Just wanted to follow up with you. After reading this comment, I decided that it would be worth a trip (and the money) to take the family to the character breakfast. It was so much fun! I am so glad we went. The food looked great, but lacked any flavor, though. It’s like they don’t have any salt or seasonings in the kitchen. My kids stuffed themselves with Mickey Waffles and fruit, so they were happy. We had an 11 AM reservation (the last seating) and it was wonderful. Goofy came by several times and the kids had lots of fun with the parade. The kids were definitely a little bummed that Mickey wasn’t part of the dining experience, and that they only got to interact with him for a coupe of minutes. The hotel was amazing to walk around, and I was so sad to leave! We are so spoiled after living here for a few years. I know when we come back to visit, we will definitely be checking them out again.

' src=

We stayed in a 1-bedroom pool view in 2012, and will be back in the same room in a few weeks. We found everything about the room to be perfect. If you are going to Aulani, unless you are a local, chances are you are going to be staying for a good chunk of time. And chances are that you may not really feel like spending hundreds of dollars on food daily (a few nice meals out on vacation is nice, but man it adds up). That kitchen was worth it’s weight in gold. There is both a Costco and a SuperTarget just a few miles from the Ko’Olina resort area. It’s very simple to go from HNL Airport, stop at the store, and then arrive at the resort with barely any additional time added on to your trip. In typical DVC fashion, the villa kitchen was fully stocked, but we loved to see the addition of the rice cooker here, set the Hawaiian tone!

The robes are, without a doubt, the most luscious I’ve ever put on. Ok maybe the ones at Laniwai Spa were even a little better, but I had to give that back at the end of my massage!

We thought the rooms were perfectly touched with Disney, while keeping true to the Hawaiian spirit they worked so hard to capture. The ukulele Mickey playing lamp now lives in our family room 🙂

We think the poolside rooms are a great value. We had a 5th floor pool view villa in the ‘Ewa wing, the short side of the wing, just outside the ‘Olelo room. At night, we loved sitting out on our huge balcony enjoying the live music while our kids were passed out cold. We opted for the pool view again – we couldn’t justify spending a long-weekend-in-WDW worth of points on the ocean view. I mean, if we were guaranteed a top floor room, sure that ocean view would rock my socks. But a 6th floor view? That’s still a pool view, not an ocean view. Barely even at all. Pool view is absolutely the way to go (but not a pool view in the Waianae Tower near the Menehune Bridge – because the gets a little loud a little early!).

Aulani stole our hearts. We can’t wait to be back home.

Thanks for the additional info about the kitchens. Like I said, we didn’t really use it.

Totally agree about the pool view rooms, and I think that’s what we’d choose again unless they were a lot more expensive. Definitely wouldn’t bother with ocean view.

Disney’s Aulani One Bedroom Villa Review (2024)

Last updated on Jan 1, 2024 by Adam Bryan . This post may contain affiliate links.

Whenever I visit Hawaii, there is only one hotel that I will ever stay in, and that’s Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa.

As you probably already know, I absolutely love Disney, so whenever there’s a chance to stay at a Disney resort, I do.

Over the years, I’ve stayed in 3 different rooms at Aulani (standard room, Disney Vacation Club Deluxe Studio, and 1-bedroom Villa) and I can tell you from a fact that the 1-bedroom villa is probably the best of the bunch.

This is especially true if you’re looking for plenty of space as well as some nice in-room amenities, such as a kitchen (with oven, fridge, and microwave), a tub, and a washer and dryer.

So when it was time to book a trip to Aulani during the late summer, I had to decide between the more affordable Standard Room or the pricier Disney Vacation Club 1-Bedroom Villa.

I had the Standard Room in my cart, but it wasn’t until I found out about the Disney Visa Card promotion that enticed me to book a 1-Bedroom Villa Poolside Gardens View , cheaper than a Standard Room with an ocean view.

Getting There

Booking details, standout features, food and drink, amenities and services, checking out.

Hawaiian Airlines from Orlando

Getting to Hawaii from Orlando used to always involve a stop in either Los Angeles, Dallas, or Atlanta. But in 2021, Hawaiian Airlines unveiled a new nonstop route from Orlando to Honolulu which was an absolute game-changer.

So we booked a roundtrip flight from MCO-HNL which was around 10 hours going and 9 hours back.

We actually lucked out because Hawaiian airlines suspend this service in September of 2022 so we were on one of the last roundtrip flights from Orlando.

Like most of our trip to Hawaii, we decided to rent a car from the airport.

I rented a Jeep through Hertz using my Capital One Venture X which gave me President’s Circle status, as well as rental car coverage.

Room rates at Disney’s Aulani Resort tend to start around $574 per night for a stand room with a standard view and $874 per night for a 1-Bedroom Villa with a standard view.

Aulani Room Rate

Thankfully, I lucked out because there was special Disney Visa Credit Card promotion that I was able to take advantage of. The promotion was 35% off any room (minus the 3-bedroom Grand Villa) when you stay 5 nights or more and pay using your Disney Visa Credit Card.

So I decided to book a 1-Bedroom Villa Poolside Gardens View .

One thing to note is that the villas are advertised as Disney Vacation Club, but anyone can book and stay in these rooms.

Aulani Room Rate

With taxes, my 6-night stay in an Aulani 1-Bedroom Villa Poolside Gardens View came out to be $4,710.90 , which broke down to $665.60 a night. I saved about $278 a night using this promotion. The normal cost for this particular room is $944 a night.

Aulani Room Rate

My stay also included a $150 resort credit so I immediately took advantage of by booking a couples spa treatment at the Laniwai Spa.

Aulani Review

There is so much to love about Aulani thanks to its beautiful setting, location, and included amenities.

  • Perfect location right on a lagoon at Ko Olina
  • 6 pool areas, including a lazy river, and two water slides
  • Adults-only, two level infinity whirl pool
  • A private beach
  • Rainbow Reef snorkeling experience
  • So many Character meet and greet opportunities
  • Complimentary kids club activities
  • No resort fees
  • Incredible Disney service

There were only a handful of drawbacks during my stay at Aulani:

  • It’s so expensive . Food is expensive. Drinks are expensive. Snacks are expensive. Merch is expensive. Parking is expensive.
  • It being August, it was still very busy and almost impossible to find a good chair by the pools in the morning. Thankfully the crowds thinned out in the afternoon.
  • Our room was located on the main floor same as the lobby (the lobby is technically on floor 3) and it was nearby elevator bank so it was pretty noisy.

Guest rooms are divided into two separate towers, Waianae Tower and Ewa Tower.

First thing first, one of the most important parts of any room, at least to me, is the view. Unfortunately, this view from this 1-Bedroom Villa poolside gardens room wasn’t amazing, but it also wasn’t bad.

Aulani 1-Bedroom Villa Review

The room faced the pool area but since it was on the 3rd floor (pool-side garden rooms are on floors 1-5), there was zero chance of seeing the ocean, which was a very tiny bummer. But we’re in Hawaii, it’s hard to complain.

Aulani 1-Bedroom Villa Review

The room is spacious, at 750 square feet, which included a separate bedroom and living area with full kitchen.

Here are all the amenities that this Aulani 1-Bedroom Villa included:

  • two flat screen TVs (one in living room and one in bedroom)
  • private balcony
  • two ceiling fans
  • washer and dryer
  • kitchen with full-sized fridge as well as a microwave, dishwasher, toaster, full sink, coffee maker, rice cooker, stove, pots and pans, dinnerware, glassware, and utensils
  • bathroom included a shower with rain head and a whirlpool tub
  • robes and slippers
  • two closets
  • ironing board
  • pack ‘n play
  • shampoo, conditioner, bath soap, facial soap, and lotion

I was so surprised just how stocked these kitchens were.

Aulani 1-Bedroom Villa Review

This was my 7th stay at Aulani and first time not staying in an ocean view room. And to be honest, I didn’t really miss it, only because I was almost never in the room.

Besides hanging out in the room for a couple hours during some rain showers, we were always by the pool or at the beach.

So would I stay in a 1-Bedroom Villa again? Absolutely ! Because you really can’t beat the amount of space and amenities this room has.

Would I shell out almost $250 more per night just to see the ocean from my room again? Honestly, no. As much as I would love to be able to walk onto my balcony and see the beautiful Pacific Ocean, I could easily just head on down to the lagoon and take in the sunset up close and personal.

Aulani is home to some fantastic snack and food options .

Makahiki Food

The main restaurant is called Makahiki which doubles as a character breakfast spot in the morning, and a casual, family-friendly preset 3-course dinner spot in the evening. Makahiki used to be a pretty good buffet pre-pandemic, so hopefully it returns to it’s former glory sometime soon. Dinner-wise, it was okay. Nothing spectacular and definitely don’t think it was worth $68 per person.

Olelo Room Food

Connected to Makahiki is the Olelo Room which is an indoor and outdoor lounge inspired by the Hawaiian language, which features a full bar as well as sushi and chef-crafted appetizers. This is a great place to grab a drink, enjoy some pupus, while taken in some live music. I was in love with the Pua’a Kalua Gratin and the torched hamachi pacific yellowtail nigiri.

Ama Ama Views

If you’re looking for something more upscale with a beautiful view, then Ama-Ama is your best bet. It’s a signature, open-air restaurant e that features classic Hawaiian cuisines with a modern twist. It’s open for both breakfast and dinner. But dinner will give you incredible sunset views. ‘Ama ‘Ama wasn’t open when we were there this time but it is now officially open after a renovation.

There’s also a poolside bar and restaurant called Off the Hook which is where you’ll find your burgers and fries, sandwiches, salads, and cocktails. My wife frequent this quite often for some fries and corn dog nuggets.

If you’re looking for coffee, then the Wailana Pool Bar was the best bet in the morning until 10:30 am.

In the middle of the pool area are two spots, Mama’s Snack Stop which serves fish and chips, tenders, and coconut shrimp; and Papalua Shave Ice which offers some refreshing Mickey-eared shave ice. I absolutely love shave ice, and although this wasn’t as good as Waiola, it didn’t disappoint. For $1, you can add Mickey Ears but I learned the hard way that these bad boys can fall off so easily.

Aulani Shave Ice

As you head down towards the beach, there is Little Opihi’s which has Dole Whip , frozen treats, alcoholic, and non-alcoholic beverages.

Ulu Cafe Food

Lastly is my favorite spot and by far the busiest spot is Ulu Cafe . Here you’ll find breakfast, plate lunches, Mickey Musibi, freshly popped popcorn, salads, grab and go selections, whole pizzas for dinner, and my personal favorite, build-your-own poke bowls for lunch! Plus, if you purchases refillable resort mugs, there were two Freestyle Coke machines that you can get unlimited refills at for the entirety of the stay.

Aulani Amenities

The service is as you would expect at any other Disney Resort, outstanding. Whenever we interacted with a Cast Member, we were always greeted with a smile or an Aloha.

From the pool staff and front desk members, to the valet attendants and retail Cast Members, I’m glad to say that I didn’t have a negative interaction during this trip.

Our room was having issues getting cold due to an AC issue, so I called the front desk a maintenance guy came in about 5 minutes. And thankfully, he was able to resolve the issue.

Housekeeping comes every other day, but that didn’t really bother me because they always stocked us up with two days worth of fresh towels.

When it comes to amenities, Aulani offers many. Here’s a quick list of the more notable ones:

  • 6 pools and a private beach
  • Lazy river with tubes
  • Character meet and greets
  • Full-service spa that included a hydrotherapy garden
  • 24-hour health and fitness center
  • Live Hawaiian music
  • Aunty’s Beach House and complimentary kids club activities
  • On-site luau called Ka Wa’a

I could’ve stayed in the lazy river all day.

Aulani Lazy River

The overall, vibe at Aulani is relaxing. Minus a few of the kid’s pool areas, it surprisingly wasn’t that hectic. I saw a lot more craziness on my most recent Disney Cruise’s pool deck than I did during this stay.

I don’t really know how to describe how this hotel looked and felt, but I definitely knew I was at a semi-luxurious beach resort in Hawaii with all the dark Koa wood accents throughout.

It was a nice mix of families and couples of all ages along with some foreigners, all of which was great to see. I definitely didn’t feel like I stood out which is always nice, at least from personal experience.

During the evenings, it was very chill. Resort guests were dressed up for dinner while some were still enjoying the pool. And by the time 10 pm rolled around, it was pretty empty at the stores, lounges, and lobby areas.

There aren’t too many places that I’m actually so sad to check out of, but Aulani is definitely one of the few.

Aulani offers an express checkout at 11:00 am meaning that I didn’t have to stop by the front desk to officially checkout. My charges for the stay were listed on the Aulani app and I was able to view the folio with zero issues. It even included my breakfast charges from earlier that morning.

So if you’re looking for a room that has plenty of space and amenities and are okay with sacrificing ocean views for comfort, then booking a Poolside Gardens view Disney Vacation Club 1-Bedroom Villa at Aulani is a fantastic option.

Thank you Adam Great article. Positive, informative yet critical where needed. The tip about booking villas with out being a DVC member is a great tip. We are headed there April 2,2023 for 6 days. We have gone twice a year since they opened (minus the shut down time) and I find everything you said to be spot on. Mahalo bruh

Would you suggest trying for a 5th floor ? Injabe a 1bd pool/garden coming up. Never been here before

August 24, 2023 at 12:56 pm

Yeah if you have a poolside garden view room booked, I would request the highest floor possible for that room category at check-in

Disney Aulani One Bedroom Villa Tour

One bedroom suite at Aulani

If you are trying to decide what kind of room to book at Disney’s Aulani resort in Hawaii you will want to see this photo tour of a one-bedroom villa.

Here is a photo tour of an Aulani one-bedroom villa. Aulani suites are awesome!

Table of Contents

Disney Aulani One Bedroom Villa

When we stayed at Aulani, we had a one-bedroom Villa. It was spacious and the kids and I had more than enough room.  The villa is 756 sq ft. Any family of 4 or 5 will have plenty of room in a one-bedroom villa. I ask if most rooms were like the one we were staying in and they told me they were. They also have studio units, but I didn’t take any photos of them, as well as regular hotel rooms.

There is a full kitchen which is so handy when traveling with kids. Everything is full size including the fridge, stove, dishwasher, and coffee maker. They provided coffee daily which I appreciated. I didn’t have a blender in my kitchen and called down to inquire about one and they had it up to my room in less than 10 minutes! Basically, anything that isn’t in there, they can get you.

If you want to get groceries for your kitchen there is a Walmart and a Safeway in the nearby town. I picked up a bottle of Malibu Rum at Walmart for $13 and mixed my own drinks all week which saved a ton of money. More ways to Save Money at Aulani.

Dining Room

You can see the dining room in this picture and it seats 5 people easily. We ate in our room more than I thought we would. It was so comfortable to hang out and relax. They have games you can check out from the family center and we would sit around the dining table snacking and playing games. More included activities.

Living Room

Master bedroom.

The master bedroom is large with a king-size bed. There is another tv in here and there is another patio with chairs and a table. There is a desk in the bedroom and with free wifi, I was able to sit there and get some work done.

The bathroom is cleverly designed for families. It is broken up into two spaces with the shower and toilet in one space and a bathtub in the other space. Which means two people can be getting ready at the same time. When you have a family this is a big deal! Also, the bathtub is a jetted tub!

There are a washer and dryer in the room in between the kitchen and dining area. This is a big deal. This means everyone can travel lighter because you can easily do laundry during your stay. We went on a never-ending hike through the jungle and were covered in mud when we showed up to check-in, so needless to say I was thrilled to see the washer and dryer!

Disney’s Aulani Resort: A Deluxe Studio Room Review

Aloha! Our park reporter Chrissy just returned from a recent stay at Aulani, a Disney resort and spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii!

Aulani is an award-winning resort and one that many fans feel is the best Disney has ever created. While the fact that it’s an ocean-front resort in Hawaii definitely helps, it’s worth noting that Aulani was also designed to capture the culture and history of the islands along with those signature Disney touches.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

For those looking to book a stay in a villa, options range from a studio to a 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, or 3-bedroom villa.

For Chrissy’s visit with her own ohana, she stayed in one of Aulani’s DVC Deluxe Studio villas which is most comparable to a standard resort room.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Aulani Deluxe Studio Villa Room Tour

During her visit to paradise, Chrissy stayed in Room 1157 on the 11th floor of the resort.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

This studio was an Island Gardens View with 1 Queen bed and 1 Queen sleeper sofa and a maximum occupancy of four adults.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Upon entering the room and to the right, Chrissy found a storage closet and kitchenette. The latter is one of the perks of booking a studio villa.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

The kitchenette was fitted with a large mini-fridge, microwave, sink, coffee pot, as well as paper towels, paper and plastic plates, cups, cutlery, coffee, and tea.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Here’s a peek inside the cabinets…

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

To the left of the entryway was where she found the studio’s bathroom.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Unfortunately, the vanity only had one sink but there’s plenty of counter space and shelves for storage.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Plus, Aulani STILL provides free individual bottles of H2o lotion, shampoo, body wash, and conditioner!

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Now, unlike most Disney World resort hotels and villas, the shower is located just to the right of the vanity.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

It’s a standard tub and shower combo but with a rain head; and again, no mounted pumps in sight! Told you this was paradise.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

To the left of the vanity is a pocket door separating the main bathroom space from the water closet.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Like those at Disney World resort hotels, having this extra space and privacy is a huge win.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Heading back into the main part of the villa, we’ve got a full-length mirror which, in our opinion, every resort and hotel should have.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Under the large flatscreen television, the dresser is pretty standard, but extra drawer space is always appreciated.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

The room also had the typical table and chairs set up, but the real star of this space was the number of outlets and that Mickey lamp! But more on the Big Cheese here in a sec.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

We need to talk about the sleeper sofa. It may look small, but Chrissy is happy to report that it’s SUPER comfortable.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

As promised, we’re circling back on the Mickey lamp because he’s wearing CROCS! Look for yourself and tell us we’re wrong.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

The studio’s Island Gardens View offered a view of the mountain sunrise. Thankfully, there was no traffic noise at all but do be prepared for loud and regular birdsong.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

In addition to an Island Gardens View, Aulani also offers a Standard View, a Poolside Gardens View, and an Ocean View. Do keep in mind that these options may only include a partial view of what they describe.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

Also, even though this villa is located near the elevator bank, it wasn’t so close that noise was an issue.

Final Thoughts & Comparisons

For 4 nights, 2 adults, and 1 child, this Deluxe Studio + a Travel Protection Plan + Hele Hele Transportation to and from HNL was priced at $3,606.16 during the time of Chrissy’s visit.

In terms of size, Aulani’s Deluxe Studios villas measure 356 sq. feet, which is on par with Disney’s Beach Club and Wilderness Lodge Studio Villas. However, they’re not quite as spacious as those at Animal Kingdom Lodge, the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Boardwalk, and so on.

Also, while Aulani’s focus on authentic Hawaiian design has been carried over into its accommodations, some of the furnishings and bathroom spaces didn’t appear as updated as we’ve seen at Walt Disney World’s resort villas.

aulani 1 bedroom villa tour

However, instead of a kitchenette, standard rooms only have a refreshment bar with a small fridge, coffee maker, and tea service. Plus, points can not be used to book a standard room.

Overall, Aulani is an incredible vacation experience and one that never fails to impress! If you’re interested in experiencing this resort for yourself, consider having one of our Travel Experts send you a free quote for Aulani today!

3 thoughts on “ Disney’s Aulani Resort: A Deluxe Studio Room Review ”

We just got back from a 3-night stay in a standard room (1135). Bathroom looks identical to the pictures posted (only you apparently got a bar of soap, that was missing in our room on check-in!). Coffee was in K-cups and there was a good number of them which was nice as we never saw housekeeping once except to remove trash on day 2 by a woman pulling a large bag behind her. Appreciated the alcove at the foot of each bed to keep luggage from underfoot, although my daughter thought the beds were too tall. The wall shelf next to the bed was a nice touch for glasses and phones if you didn’t have the table side of the bed. Partial Ocean View also meant a view of the hills, parking structure, and the Four Seasons tennis courts atop what I assumed was their parking garage. Balcony had two chairs and a tiny table, no chaise lounge. One of the 6 elevators (the one with the Menehune at the top) was broken our whole stay & the Hawaiian version of Disney music I remember from 2015 was gone (only caught snatches of it walking past the sample DVC rooms).

I’m not fussed about having pumps for soap etc (I bring my own toiletries anyway), so that doesn’t affect my stay. However, I found the bed at Aulani incredibly hard and uncomfortable.

I was at Aulani last month for 7 nights and I had a deluxe studio with an ocean view and I loved it. There was enough of an ocean view to satisfy me as I sat on my balcony. The size of the main room and bathroom was perfect for me. I loved having the kitchenette because I took a couple excursions that left around 9 am and I was able to have a decent breakfast in my room (with food I had bought at Ulu Cafe earlier) before I left on my excursions. I want to go back to Aulani soon.

Disney Has a Resort in Hawaii — and It's Just As Magical As You'd Expect

This Disney resort offers a world of magic without the theme parks.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

Food and Drink

Activities and experiences, family-friendly offerings, accessibility, how to get the most value out of your stay.

David Roark/Disney Destinations

In August 2011, Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, opened in the resort community of Ko Olina on the southwestern shore of Oahu. As a longtime Disney fan and Travel & Leisure ’s resident theme park expert, I’ve been curious about this Hawaiian resort; after all, what would it be like to stay at a Disney resort without rushing off to theme parks each morning and seeing the fireworks every night? I found my answer during a family trip to Aulani this February.

Upon arrival, I spoke to Kama Hopkins, Aulani’s Hawaiian cultural advisor, about the relationship between Disney and Hawaiian culture, and he pointed out one fundamental commonality: “Both are storytellers. Disney is one of the most well-known storytellers there is. But for us, in Polynesia and through the Pacific, we like to say that we were people who didn’t have any written language, so we had to tell stories. We come from storytellers.”

At Aulani, storytelling is integrated into every design aspect, with thoughtfully created touchpoints for visitors to engage with Hawaiian history and culture. The resort has one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary Hawaiian art; a lounge celebrates ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi , or the Hawaiian language; and architectural details, big and small, highlight the history and modern culture.

Immediately upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted with a 360-degree mural that depicts Hawaiian history from ancient to modern times and soaring archways that mimic the design of traditional Hawaiian canoes. The layout of the entire resort is inspired by the ahupuaʻa division of land that typically stretches from the mountains to the ocean, illustrated in water features, landscaping, rock work, and design as you walk from the lobby to the beach. Programming for all ages provides more ways to engage with the local culture; I spoke to youth activities manager Kanoa Kawai, who described the host of Hawaiian language-focused crafts and activities they offered for Hawaiian Language Month (February). “At least if they learn anything, they learn about aloha. They know how to share aloha and love with their family and friends,” said Kawai.

Of course, you can find Mickey and pals (plus some rare characters typically only found at the Asian Disney parks) at character meals and meet-and-greets, Disney music, and Minnie Mouse ears throughout the property, too. Aulani is genuinely packed with fun things to do for all ages, though it’s particularly great for families with young children, and we felt that after three nights, we’d barely scratched the surface of all there is to do and see within the resort.

Here’s our review of Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii.

Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa

  • Spacious rooms and suites are perfect for families of all sizes, outfitted with all the comforts of home.
  • Character meals, meet-and-greets, pool parties, family activities, and a kids club offer Disney fun for all ages.
  • Laniwai, a Disney Spa, offers signature Hawaiian treatments and a supremely relaxing hydrotherapy garden.
  • Fan-favorite Aulani snacks, including Mickey-shaped spam musubi, shave ice, and Dole Whips, are available at dining locations throughout the resort.
  • The KA WA‘A lū‘au celebrates Hawaiian history and culture with singing, dancing, and storytelling in a lush setting.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

At Aulani, accommodations are split into two general categories: traditional hotel-style rooms and suites and Disney Vacation Club villas. Hotel-style accommodations include standard two-queen or king rooms and one- and two-bedroom suites. Most of the resort’s accommodations are Disney Vacation Club villas, but don’t worry — you don’t have to be a member to book these rooms (more on that membership program below). One-, two-, and three-bedroom villas include separate bedrooms, full kitchens and dining areas, and a washer and dryer for home-like conveniences, while deluxe studios offer a more traditional hotel feel. We stayed in a one-bedroom villa, and we loved having more than 750 square feet to spread out, a full-size fridge to keep leftovers and snacks in, and a washer and dryer to do some laundry.

No matter what type of room you stay in, you can expect thoughtful, island-inspired designs with natural materials and Hawaiian art and decor. Like the rest of the property, you can find adorable Disney touches throughout the rooms — like a wooden ukelele-playing Mickey lamp — but the design focuses primarily on Hawaiian influences and the natural beauty of the area rather than the cartoon characters you’d find at many Disney theme park hotels. I highly recommend booking an oceanview room with a balcony (request a high floor if you can!) to enjoy the gorgeous nightly sunsets from your room.

Aulani’s dining experiences range from multi-course dinners with sunset ocean views to quick-service Hawaiian poke. And Disney parks fans, take note: you can get the ever-popular Mickey waffles for breakfast at multiple locations, too. AMA‘AMA is an upscale open-air restaurant with a thatched roof and stunning sunset views, offering a four-course prix-fixe dinner featuring Hawaiian flavors and local ingredients. An optional wine pairing is also available. Makahiki is a lively restaurant themed to the Hawaiian celebration of the harvest, and it serves daily character breakfast with a prix-fixe menu featuring tasty dishes, including malasadas (Portuguese sugar donuts), kālua pig omelets, and pancakes with macadamia nut-vanilla sauce.

For dinner (sans characters), guests can pick from fresh salads, steaks, pasta, seafood, and more during a prix-fixe three-course meal. For a more casual dining experience, guests can stop by Off the Hook for breakfast, lunch, or dinner; I loved the ahi poke and crab cake BLT for a tasty poolside bite. The ‘Ōlelo Room serves up coffee and malasadas in the morning and transitions to a cocktail and sushi bar by night in a space that celebrates the Hawaiian language.

Ulu Cafe is a fast-casual spot for all-day dining and snacks; it’s the perfect spot to grab an acai bowl for breakfast, a poke bowl for lunch (I had both the classic and spicy tuna bowls multiple times, and they were delicious), and other grab-and-go items throughout the day. Ulu Cafe is also where you’ll find one of Aulani’s most sought-after snacks: the Mickey-shaped spam musubi. These sell out quickly, so grab one when you see it if you want to try one of the resort’s most popular snacks. (They even make Mickey musubi merch, available at the hotel’s gift shop.) Mama’s Snack Stop is another quick service stand serving classic poolside eats like chicken tenders and coconut shrimp.

And you can’t visit Aulani without getting the iconic Mickey-shaped shave ice from Pāpālua Shave Ice or a fresh fruit Dole Whip sundae with watermelon or pineapple from Little ‘Opihi's by the beach.

All these delicious things considered, the resort’s best dining experience isn’t found at a restaurant. The KA WA‘A lū‘au is a must-do when you visit Aulani. The three-hour experience includes pre-show demonstrations, where you can learn about taro pounding, ukulele playing, traditional tattoos, and more, followed by a buffet dinner featuring tasty seafood, prime rib, and plenty of macaroni salad. The lū‘au performance is truly incredible, with singing, dancing, and storytelling all about Hawaiian culture and history. While Mickey and Minnie make an appearance, the lū‘au is centered around the incredible beauty of the culture and the people.

As a Disney resort, Aulani offers a slate of character-centric activities for all ages. Character meet-and-greets allow guests to snap photos with favorites like Mickey, Minnie, Moana, Stitch, and the much rarer Duffy and friends, typically only found at the Disney theme parks in Asia.

Guests can make their own floral ears (for a fee), shop for Aulani-exclusive Disney merchandise, and splash around during pool parties with characters like Goofy and Max. The resort has several pools, ranging from infinity-edge grotto pools overlooking the ocean to zero-entry family-friendly pools and a water play structure that little ones will love. The massive pool complex also has two larger waterslides, a lazy river, and adults-only hot tubs. Of course, there’s also the beautiful, protected beach and lagoon with complimentary loungers; guests can also paddleboard out on the water for an additional fee.

The Rainbow Reef is another must-do when you visit; the human-made saltwater lagoon is home to around 1,000 vibrant fish, so it’s the perfect spot for even first-time snorkelers to check out the colorful marine life below the surface. You can purchase single-day or entire vacation passes or even book a scuba diving or fish-feeding experience in the reef.

You can also book excursions that depart from the resort; we booked the sailing canoe experience with Hawaiian Ocean Adventures. It leaves right from the Aulani beach, and it was a beautiful way to explore part of the coastline while learning more about Hawaiian culture and nature from the fantastic guides. End the day with storytelling around the fire pit or stargazing to learn how Hawaiians used the night sky for navigation.

Throughout your stay, check out the Aulani app to see what free activities are available each day; you’ll also see which require a fee and how much they cost.

I’ve visited some exceptional spas throughout my travels, but I didn’t expect to find one of the best at a Disney resort.

The Laniwai ritual begins the moment you enter the spa; before you’re shown to the relaxation areas, you select a stone at random from a bucket, and on it, you’ll find a word (mine was “balance”) in both English and Hawaiian that can inspire your time at the spa. After dropping your stone into an indoor reflection pond, you continue into the relaxation areas (dressing rooms and some amenities are separated by gender, but the hydrotherapy garden is co-ed).

Even though you’re just steps from the waterslides and lazy river, Laniwai feels worlds apart, offering a range of body and facial treatments — including signature Hawaiian massages — in a serene setting. Apart from my fantastic lomilomi massage, the outdoor hydrotherapy garden was my favorite part of the experience, and I could have spent hours hopping between the cold plunge and hot tub, walking along the reflexology path, relaxing in the soaking pools, and testing each of the six rain-style showers. And the relaxation doesn’t have to end when your treatment is over; at checkout, I received a sachet of balance-inspired bath salts so I could take my experience with me (back to my room, where I used them to soak in the giant bathtub later in the trip).

Aulani is packed with family-friendly activities and that inimitable Disney magic that all ages love, making it an excellent destination for small and large families. Several pools, an interactive water play area, two giant water slides, a lazy river, and a private saltwater snorkeling lagoon provide plenty of fun spots to splash around before even reaching the protected beach with crystal-clear water and minimal waves. Where else can kids (and kids-at-heart) grab a Stitch or Moana Dole Whip and dip their toes in the pristine ocean before hanging out with Goofy during a pool party? And, of course, character meals, meet-and-greets, storytelling, and other daily activities provide plenty of fun for the whole crew.

Little ones ages four to 12 can also hang out at Aunty’s Beach House, a supervised kids club with engaging activities. While many activities are free, premium experiences (including some that include beloved characters like Moana) require an extra charge. Pre-registration and reservations for Aunty’s Beach House can be found on the  Aulani website .

Disney’s theme parks and resorts are accessible to guests with various abilities, and Aulani is no exception. The property is ADA-compliant with accessible rooms and features, including complimentary beach wheelchairs (available on a first-come, first-served basis) and pool access via pool lifts and zero-entry pool areas. Rainbow Reef has a pool lift, so guests who need it can also enjoy this serene snorkeling experience and spot the colorful marine life up close. Sign language interpretation is available by request for the lū‘au.

Aulani is located in Ko Olina , a resort community on the southwestern shore of Oahu. The resort shares a lagoon and beach area with the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina, and it’s close to the Ko Olina Golf Club’s 18-hole course. Aulani is about 30 minutes away from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) by car; rideshare services like Lyft and shuttle and taxi services are available. If you plan to explore the surrounding area, you could rent a car or plan excursions including transportation to and from the hotel. Parking is available for $40 per day, though Disney Vacation Club members receive complimentary self-parking for up to two vehicles.

As mentioned above, Aulani is a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) property. Rather than a traditional timeshare model, DVC allows members to book vacations at any of the 16 DVC properties (including Disney World and Disneyland hotels ), sail with Disney Cruise Line, or travel with Adventures by Disney using a points-based system. Members can check the points calendars to determine the best time to visit and maximize their points. Of course, you don’t have to be a member to book a room (traditional guest room or villa) at any DVC resort, including Aulani. DVC members can enjoy exclusive perks during their Aulani stay, including free parking, discounts, and activities.

Be sure to check out the offers available on the Aulani website to find limited-time deals before you book. Recent offerings have included up 30 percent off extended stays in the spring and fall, up to 30 off select stays for eligible members of the U.S. military, and up to 35 off for Disney Visa cardholders.
