Vasudhara Falls are visible from Mana village. It seems like it is very near and will be in reach by just trekking few mtrs,, but the distance is too much. Few small streams have to be crossed to reach the Vasudhara. Small Glacier walk is also required to reach the Falls. But every moment spent at this place falls you in love with the nature.

Photo of Badrinath Dham and Trek to Vasudhara Falls by Ashish Arora

The Glacier beneath the falls is very slippery because of water falling from the falls as well as the sand on it. It is required to be extra cautious during this part.

Photo of Badrinath Dham and Trek to Vasudhara Falls by Ashish Arora

You will get the touch of the water from the falls only after reaching the other side of glacier and below the glacier the water is flowing continuously. So, every step requires more alertness.

But the journey was very beautiful and fascinating. The place is entirely safe and clean. We completed this trek in June 2017, and amazing part was that we used public transport starting from Delhi itself. We get a chance to have conversations with different locals.

Detailed Itenary we followed :

Day 1 : Delhi to Haridwar by overnight bus

Day 2 :Haridwar to Joshimath by Govt. bus

Day 3: Joshimath to Badrinath, Mana and Vasudhara falls

Day 4: Badrinath to Chopta

Day5 : Tunganatha and Chandrashila Trek and return to Ukhimath

A Day Trek to Vasudhara waterfalls

Vishwanath Radhakrishna

Trek to this Virtual Paradise was in my bucket list for more than a decade.Whenever I used to Visit Badrinath - Abode of Lord Vishnu , or any Expedition around. Either due to  hectic time schedules or any other work I was compelled to move eitherway.

During one my visit to Satopanth Tal in May 2009 , because of a buffer day I reached Mana - The last village 5 kms from Badrinath Dham, on Uttaranchal side a day ahead to scheduled arrival. No Sooner I reached, the  road head  Vasudhara lsuddenly urked in my mind and decided to stay back in Mana and trek next day to Vasudhara Waterfalls.

Though I have seen the falls from other bank of Alakananda river, I was moved by its sheer height, serene location. I just wanted to expereince its beauty, going down.

For the less adventurous , who love to be lost in the lap of nature, Vasudhara waterfalls in the Mana Valley of Gharwal Himalayas is the utimate place must visiting. Mana  is easily accesbile by Jeeps and  Vehicles on Indo Tibetan Border, beyond vehicles  dont go further.

Vasudadhara Waterfalls Cascading in all its Glory

Mana has gained popularity for the Caves ,for piligrims who visit Badrinath,  such as Vyas Gupha , Ganesh Gupha , Narad Gupha , Bheem Phool - the birth place of river Saraswati. There are  few stalls selling locals handicrafts and tea shops.

As i set my foot , cross Bheem Phool, Mana Valley Unfolds and valley opens up gradually, Snow clad mountains on the either side of the trail garners the attention and insists to crane up necks. After walking parallely, for any hour , I could hear and sight of  waterfalls between moving clouds,  the roaring sound of the Waterfalls signalling its proximity.

The Waterfalls is situated at an altiutde of 13,500 ft above sea level. The river Alakananda which takes its birth at Alakapuri cascades here from a height of 350 ft. The water lunges down majestically and the ferocity of water gushing down is an awesome sight to behold. The pearly white water hurtling down at a great speed gives rise to tiny droplets of water.

I was just below the waterfalls and i was gently caressed by the tiny ice cold droplets. Vasudhara got its name after a Devarshi called Vasu Who performed Penance here. The Alakananda river takes birth at a place called Alakapuri  high in the mountains and cascades here, flows further down and joins the river Saraswati at Bheemphool where it is known as Keshav prayag - ( Prayag is confluence of 2 rivers ).

As the clouds swayed by the blowing wind, I could catch a quick glimpse of Mt. Satopanth , Chaukamba Massif and other peaks in the distance. The valley is even mentioned in the Epic Mahabarat about 25 kms from Vasudhara falls is the Snow Capped peak of Swargarohini Parvat. Legend has it that Pandavas after the great war , visited Satopanth tal  enroute Chakrateerth ascended the Swargarohini peak to attain Salvation. Visitors to Badrinath should include Vasudhara Waterfalls in their Itinerary.

After spending few hours , beholding the waterfalls I turned back with a sense of satisfaction !

Vasudhara Falls Trek – Speed Ascent

Balakun Peak in the Alaknanda Valley - Vasudhara Falls Trek

So after completing the Pangarchulla peak trek , we had one day for the sightseeing of Badrinath and Mana village. I was not at all interested in visiting the temple and caves as I had already visited earlier. So I, my friend (Manas) and our trek guide (Laxman Bhaiya) decided to visit the Vasudhara Falls. We had a very small window to complete the trek because one of our friends was not feeling well and we had to return Joshimath on the same day. We planned for a speed ascent and descent from the Vasudhara falls.

About Vasudhara Falls

Vasudhara Falls is a 400 feet high waterfall situated in the Alaknanda valley and can be approached by a moderate trek of 5 km from Mana village. As per Hindu mythology, this is the same valley that Pandavas took on their way to heaven and that is why the waterfall is also considered sacred. As per researchers, the water of Vasudhara falls has medicinal properties so it is considered that taking a bath under the falls is beneficial for the body.

Beginning the trek

While others were visiting the temple, we went to see the waterfall. We took the trail going upwards from the Bhim Pul and Saraswati temple and started moving into the Alaknanda valley. The initial trail was almost paved and not much steep. As we entered the valley, the trail became slightly narrower and steeper than the previous.

After 2 km, we could see the Balakun peak having glaciers and moraine at the bottom, clearly from the trail. We walked quite fast and sometimes ran too as we wanted to complete the trek as soon as possible. We crossed one landslide and a snow patch as well. The last km was quite steep and it made us a bit tired but all our tiredness got vanished when we had our first glimpse of the waterfall. We continued the trek without taking any break and reached a point where we could have the best view of the waterfall. It took us an hour and 20 minutes to complete the trek of 5 km.

Trail to Vasudhara Falls - Vasudhara Falls Trek

We halted there for 15 minutes to admire the falls and click some photos and later we began our descent towards Mana village through the same route that we took while ascending. It took around 50 minutes and we reached the village. Although the trail was properly marked and paved, we had to watch our step while descending as the route was quite uneven at a few points. After reaching the Mana village, we visited the famous Badrinath temple and later drove back to Joshimath.

View this post on Instagram Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. – Mark Twain . So recently I did speed climb from Mana village to Vasudhara Falls. I hiked 5 km in 1.5 hours. The trail was uphill and quite beautiful. It's the same trail which goes further upto Satopanth Lake. The views of Balakun peak were magnificent. . @justwravel . #travel #indianlandscapes #landscapes #sodelhi #natgeoyourshot #storiesofindia #poi #indiapictures #photographers_of_india #yourshot_india #natgeoindia #icalandscape #woi #himalayangeographic #tripwithjustwravel #wravelerforlife #mypixeldiary #oph #photographersteam #indianphotos #outlooktraveller #othalloffame #neverstop #cntgiveitashot #lonelyplanet #mana #vasudhara #trekwithforclaz A post shared by Manu Khandelwal (@indian.backpacker) on Jun 7, 2019 at 9:37pm PDT
