Since Yercaud is a beautiful hill station located in the Eastern Ghats, your travel to this place would be filled with beautiful landscapes, lush greeneries and pleasant climate, of course. Once you arrive at Yercaud, hire a cab and reach the hotel. Do complete all the check-in procedures and drop your luggage in the room. In the afternoon, have your lunch and get ready for sightseeing at Yercaud. You will be visiting a few attractions including Yercaud Lake, Anna Park, The Shevaroyan temple, Kiliyur Waterfall and Pagoda Point. After exploring all the places, return to the hotel and have a comfortable night stay.

Yercaud Lake

The best way to start sightseeing at Yercaud is by visiting the famous Yercaud Lake. It is also known as the Emerald Lake, a stunning attraction that you must visit. With a beautiful garden alongside the lake and a floating fountain in the lake, the sight you are going to see is something that cannot be put into words. The lake offers a ’20 minutes boat ride’ in Yercaud’s pleasant climate which will be well worthy of a try.

Yercaud Lake

The Shevaroyan Temple

The Shevaroyan Temple is a cave temple that is dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan. This deity is worshipped by a lot of tribal people of that region. Talking about the temple, it is a narrow and dark cave featuring the idols of Goddess Kaveri and Lord Shevaroyan. It is also believed among the people that Goddess Kaveri is the guardian deity of all the 67 villages located around this region.

Anna Park is a garden with a combination of four small parks which are Lake Park, Deer Park, Gandhi Park and Children’s Park. The park gives place to a wide collection of trees which is enough to speak about how peaceful the environment will be.

Anna Park

Kiliyur Waterfall

The waters drop from a height of 300 feet at the Kiliyur Falls which is basically the overflowing waters of Yercaud Lake. The main highlight of this place is its breathtaking view which is even more beautiful during monsoon. To reach the falls, you would have to take a 2 km trek which is not-so-easy for everyone. After all, adventure is all we want while visiting a hill station, right?

Pagoda Point

Pagoda Point, also known as the Pyramid Point, is a famous attraction in Yercaud. Wondering why the place got this name? It is because of the presence of four piles of stones that looks exactly like a pyramid. This is a perfect place where you can embrace the mind with solace and tranquillity. Because of its heavenly surroundings, think about how amazing the sunrise and sunset views will be.

Pagoda Point

Day 2 – Sightseeing at Yercaud

On day 2, have your breakfast and proceed for half-day sightseeing at Yercaud. The places that you can visit include Rose Garden, Lady’s Seat and Gent’s Seat. Apart from these, you can also check out some other small places like Eco-Tourism Park. After exploring all the above places, make your way back to the hotel and get some rest.

Botanical Garden

You can visit the Botanical Garden which houses an Orchidarium and a greenhouse. The Orchidarium houses roughly around 3000 trees and 1800 shrubs and said to be the third-largest Orchidarium in India. Also, you will get to witness the Greenhouse which is a well maintained cultivating area in the Botanical Garden.

Lady’s Seat

There is a watchtower located in the Lady’s Seat which is equipped with a telescope for the tourists to enjoy the view of Mettur Dam and Salem town. Also, the place got this weird name because of a belief among the natives that an English lady once used to visit this place and spend her evenings sitting and watching the view of the rock.

Gent’s Seat

Situated only a few metres away from Lady’s Seat is Gent’s Seat, a prime attraction of Yercaud that is visited along with Lady’ Seat. In case you are visiting Gent’s Seat during the night, then you are probably lucky to witness thousands of light twinkling in Salem town.

Gent's Seat

Day 3 – Yercaud to Bangalore

On the final day of the itinerary, have your breakfast at the hotel and complete all the check out procedures. Since the past two days were fully sightseeing, this day on the itinerary is exclusively for shopping. Visit the Salem Co-operative Super Market Branch and the Main Bazaar where you can shop the things you want. Then, drive to Bangalore with a lot of delightful memories to take back home.

If you are longing for a day to be spent in nature’s lap, then Yercaud is one place that you should plan your trip to. Right from trekking to mountain climbing to taking long walks to just sitting and admiring the beauty of nature, Yercaud is too beautiful for all of it. Unlike the Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats is a discontinuous mountain range cut by the rivers Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna, and Kaveri.

It starts from Odisha, and traces its way through Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and ends in Tamil Nadu. It’s home to some beautiful, offbeat hill stations in India, one of them being Yercaud.

Yercaud Trip Plan at a Glance

One of the most charming places in Tamil Nadu , Yercaud is surrounded by some famous tourist spots of South India – Pondicherry , Kodaikanal , and Coonoor to name a few. But it’s mostly unknown to people outside Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Here is a snapshot of the best Yercaud Itinerary for 2 days if you are traveling from Bangalore.

Where to stay in Yercaud?

There are numerous accommodations available in Yercaud for all pocket sizes. I highly recommend staying close to the Pagoda point for two reasons.

First, you can walk to the Pagoda point in the early morning instead of waiting for a cab. Second, it is away from the crowded town, but not too far from the other tourist spots.

Other locations you can choose is near the Montfort School and near Emerald Lake.

Yercaud Itinerary – A Virtual Tour of the Best Places

Let me take you on a virtual tour of the hills. Thanks to the large number of techies living in Bangalore, Yercaud has emerged as an exotic weekend getaway. It’s not as crowded as Ooty or Kodaikanal and is also just 205km from Bangalore.

Following the shortest route you will take about 5 hours to reach Yercaud if you start off early by 6 am.  This includes a breakfast halt at A2B.

Yercaud is enveloped by the scintillating Shevaroy Hills.  The undulating hills are covered in orange groves, coffee, fruits, and spice plantations.

It got its name from the words “Yeri” which means lake and “Kaddu” which means forest. Couldn’t be more apt given that the township here is built around an opulent lake surrounded by forests.

I have updated this post with the latest information about Yercaud as of 2023.

32-km Loop Road

32 km loop road in Yercaud with dense forests and hilly views on both sides

You adventure in Yercaud begins with the 32-km loop road that has numerous hairpins along the scenic Eastern Ghats. It’s the scenes that unfold here that make Yercaud one of the best places for a road trip from Bangalore . The road leads you to the colonial-era hill station of Yercaud.

There are barricades and mirrors on the turns to help drivers, but you need to be careful. You can also go for a hike on this road if you are indeed up to it. With coffee plantations, spice farms on one side, and hill-forests on the other, this is a mesmerizing experience.

On you way to Yercaud from Bangalore take this scenic tour before you reach the hotel. You will feel like stopping at the various viewpoints in this journey.

Boat in the Emerald Lake aka Yercaud Lake

Watching the sparkling Emerald Lake at the center of Yercaud from our boat

The first thing to do after lunch is to head straight to the Emerald lake. Did you know this is the only natural lake in a South Indian hill station ? You will enjoy the scenic forests around and the floating fountain in the lake when you go boating.

Thrive in the biodiversity of the Deer Park

A pair of spotted deer

After this enjoy some snacks at the Yercaud lake and walk towards the deer park. It is also known as the eco-tourism park for amazing biodiversity. Imagine walking in a park with deer, peafowls, and ducks taking an evening walk with you.

Walk to the Botanical Garden

Keep walking a little more and you will reach the botanical garden. This green oasis has 3000 trees and 18000 shrubs spread over the 18 hectares of land. It’s truly a delight to senses… and lungs.

Some adventure activities at Anna Park

A beautiful park in the hills with pine trees, and decorative plants near the Emerald Lake - Anna Park is a highlight of Yercaud Trip Plan with family

Anna Park is another small beautiful park near the lake. Here you can enjoy quad bike riding and zip-lining. It’s equally interesting for children and adults, making it a perfect spot for families in the evening.

See the mesmerizing sunset at Lady’s Seat

Sunset at Lady's Seat in Yercaud Itinerary

Remember that you are in the East and here the sun sets earlier than Bangalore. After enjoying your time in the lake and gardens it’s time to drive to this famous viewpoint.

It’s called the Lady’s Seat. A revered English lady used to spend the evenings watching the sunset on this rock. Thus this unassuming place got its name.

Day2: Start with Sunrise at Pagoda Point

A photo with friends at Pagoda Point - one of the best places to visit in Yercaud

Our hotel was very close to the Pagoda hill-top. So I woke up early in the morning to hike to the Pagoda point on my own. Somehow, I just lost my way and went and explored the valley and came back for breakfast. Then we asked the hotel managers and set out for our trip to the real place.

Pagoda point is also known as Pyramid Point and it got its name from the for piles of four stones that have been arranged in the shape of the Pyramid. Away from the tourist crowd, this place is best enjoyed in the early morning on a clear day.

Near Pagoda point, there is a Rama temple where the locals visit to seek blessings.

Temple at Pagoda Point - Yercaud itinerary

Offbeat Norton’s bungalow and Bear’s Cave

Return to your hotel for breakfast and check out. The Norton’s Bunglow is a secret destination on the way to Shevaroy Temple road. This quintessential English bungalow has inspired many Bollywood scenes. It is the oldest known bunglow in this hill station. A rich British Lawyer from Chennai constructed it here.

The Bear’s cave situated in a private coffee estate near the Norton Bungalow is a craft of nature. Some believe that there used to be a secret tunnel inside for the royals to escape during emergency.

Montfort School

The charming garden of Montfort School - Yercaud

You might not think of visiting a school on your trip somewhere, but Montfort School is special. You can get permission to enter this prestigious and historic school on the weekends.

The marvelous architecture of the buildings here will leave you awestruck. There’s also a small zoo inside the campus.

A heritage building in European style of architecture that serves as a school

You will find some of the largest and best boarding schools of India in these British-era hill stations. Another such heritage school that has become a massive tourist is the Dr. Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong. Know more about the Himalayan hill station in my Kalimpong travel blog .

Tipperary viewpoint

This is another viewpoint from where you can get mesmerizing views of the Shevaroy hills.

Trek to the delightful Killyur Falls

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

Kiliyur Falls is located at a distance of 4 km from the Bus Stand. This beautiful cascade is hidden deep in the forest.

So, you will need to take a slant walk of 1km through the forests before reaching a flight of steps. After walking 200 plus narrow steep stairs you will reach this beautiful place.

The waterfall was underwhelming for me when we visited in December . So, you may skip it if you are short of time. Instead visit the offbeat Norton’s Bunglow. Here’s a comparison of what the falls look like in the Creative Commons pictures and what we found.

Killyur Falls -Yercaud places to visit

Servarayan Temple or Shevaroy Temple

Sitting at an altitude of 5326 feet above sea- level, The Servarayan temple occupies the highest peak of Shevaroy Hills.

It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Servarayan and his consort Kaveri Amma. It offers a spectacular view of the Mettur Dam and the entire valley.  This too requires a short trek, so you need to watch your time, if you have to return the same day.

Ending the Yercaud itinerary with a throwback selfie to our memorable trip with friends on a Christmas Weekend.

How to reach Yercaud?

The nearest big cities near Yercaud are Bangalore and Chennai. It’s very easy to reach Yercaud from either of these two places by car. There are overnight buses from Bangalore which leave on Friday, and also in the early morning on Saturday.

The morning buses tend to be late, so I’d prefer the overnight buses on Friday. That way you will reach Yercaud in the early morning and have a lot of time to explore.

It is just 35 km from Salem, making Yercaud a perfect destination for a one day trip from Salem .

Distance from Bangalore to Yercaud: 230 km

Distance from Chennai to Yercaud: 365km

Bangalore to Yercaud Weekend Roadtrip (Updated)

Yercaud is a small hill station nestled in the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats. Positioned at a height of almost 5,000 feet above sea level, Yercaud is one of the prominent weekend getaways from Bangalore towards Salem district, Tamil Nadu. Roughly a 4.5-hour drive along NH 44, Yercaud is a lesser-known hill station of South India. However, being surrounded by orange groves, coffee and spice plantations, this quaint little hill station awed us by the serene beauty it offered! Yercaud gets its name from ‘Yeri’ & ‘Kaddu’ which in Tamil, translates to ‘Lake Forest’. After previous visits to hills stations of Coorg and Wayanad, this is the third hill station in South India we visited.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

Planning for a short weekend getaway wasn’t immaculate since our main objective was to enjoy a couple of days in peace and calm. To complement the decision of our ‘zen mode’, we chose to make The Kottai Ayurveda Resorts our base location. The resort is coupled with a unique architectural mix of South Indian & contemporary styles with every room offering an infinite view of the Shevaroy mountains through the extended private balcony. Add to it the surrounding forests with vibrant green hues and the dark monsoon clouds playing hide and seek with the sun. It indeed was very peaceful! Post checking in, we spent the afternoon leisurely overlooking the vast expanse of the green landscape and soaking in the beauty of it all.

The first evening at our resort was spent taking a stroll down the road towards the lake, which is hardly at a distance of 800 meters from the resort. Located at the center of the town and surrounded by cloud laden hills, gardens and large trees, the ‘Yercaud Lake’ is one of the most prominently visited locations. There are parks lined up along the lake which serve as a major tourist attraction as well. However, very quickly though, the dark monsoonal clouds gathered pace and threatened to descend with great vigor. We quickly doubled up and headed towards our resort to enjoy the rest of the evening.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

One of the most fascinating parts of the Kottai Ayurveda Resort is the roof-top which provides an amazing view of the hills nearby. The images speak for themselves! Post enjoying the sudden downpour, we were witness to an amazing sunset which was straight out of a fairy tale! The remaining part of the night was spent exploring the food options available for an early dinner before we crashed in for the night.!

Day 2 of our trip was majorly spent exploring many of the attractions at Yercaud. Being a hill station laced with lakes to viewpoints to coffee plantations and waterfalls, there is something for everyone. However, one of the best experiences is to drive a full circle on the ring road around Yercaud, as shown in the map below. Roll down the windows and enjoy the drive through narrow roads to experience bliss! Thick foliage, lush shades of green, spread out coffee plantations and tall trees with an abundance of freshness in the air – the tranquil atmosphere is there to welcome you. The 50 KM stretch is a must-drive. Most of the locations to visit are en route itself which makes this drive a must-do.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

Kiliyur Falls – A waterfall in the Shevaroyan hills of eastern ghats formed by the Yercaud river overflowing into the Kiliyur Valley, is characterized by a steep descent of almost 300 feet which can be reached by foot through cliffs and unpaved pathways. Set within lush plantations, the refreshing air, and the serene beauty is all to be soaked in! However, this waterfall springs to life during the monsoons with its heavy flow of water, presenting a sight to behold.

After our trek to the Kiliyur falls, we made our way directly towards the drive along the ring road towards the Karadiyoor viewpoint which offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. Post the same, we continued our drive towards the Cauvery Peak Coffee Estate – an Indian family-run business, home to various coffee flavors and spices which are also retailed. For interested travelers, there is a complete coffee experience tour facilitated by the 150-year-old estate. A complete plantation tour is also on the offering.

By the time we reached back to our resort in the evening, the dark clouds had already started grumbling. While we sat on the portico overlooking the hills and the rain lashing against the trees, we were reminded of how close we were to nature and how such a quick weekend trip provided us with so much peace! The constant pitter-patter of raindrops on the extended balcony, the swishing bouts of wind and the rumbling of clouds all added to the brilliant atmosphere.

While we woke up rejuvenated from our short visit to Yercaud, we signed off the trip with breakfast at the in-house restaurant of the resort. 6.30 AM – Depart from Home and hit Hosur road.

8 AM – Breakfast time at Sree Saravana Bhavan in Krishnagiri on the highway. This place is opposite the lake/boat house and has excellent breakfast menu.

10.45 AM – Arrive at Hogenakkal Falls. Spend an hour enjoying the beautiful waterfalls. We don’t recommend coracle ride as it is risky without life jackets. If you love fish then you can try fresh fish fry in make shift restaurants.

12 PM – Depart Hogenakkal falls and drive straight to Yercaud. Enjoy the drive on the ghat road which has hairpin curves and nice view points. Stop your car/bike and enjoy the lovely vistas. Arrive in Yercaud for late lunch.

2.30 PM – Arrive at Yercaud. Have lunch and relax.

4 PM – Go for a hopping tour of view points. Yercaud is known for view points which provide some magnificent views of the valley.

Return to hotel and enjoy the quiet evening at your hotel.

7 AM – Drive to the lake. This is the Jewel of Yercaud. Morning times are the best to experience the lake. Walk around in the mist filled surroundings of the lake. Cover yourself with a light woollen as there will be nip in the air. Go for a round of boating in the lake.

9 AM – Return to the hotel for breakfast.

10.30 AM – Drive to coffee estate to see the lovely Kiliyur falls. The falls will be worth a visit in monsoon. Even otherwise the walk to the falls through the estate is a good experience. One has to walk down 200 steps to reach the falls. Elderly may find it tough.

Travel Tips

  • The roads are excellent throughout.
  • Look out for deviation to Yercaud from bye pass in Salem. You have to go through the town to go to Yercaud.
  • The ghat section to yercaud from Salem is a comfortable drive through there are few hair pin bends.
  • Yercaud is a small little town. It is a place where you would live to laze around in a hammock with a book in hand! Except for few view points and the lake, there is nothing much to do “sightseeing” as such. So go there to just relax and enjoy the lovely climate especially from October till March.
  • Yercaud weather is best between September to March. Summers will be quite hot.
  • There are very few eating places in the town. But nothing great as such.
  • There are few British Bungalows which have been converted into Home Stays. You can find them out on Trip Advisor.
  • There are many options to stay in Yercaud. Hotels/Home Stays conduct treks/rock climbing/rappelling and other adventure sports. You can check it out from your hotel directly if interested.
  • Yercaud is a lovely place for cycling. Carry your bicycle or hire one and enjoy the rides.
  • Sunrise at Manjakuvai view-point is lovely. If you are game to raise early, check out sun rise here. Sunset at Pagoda Point is lovely.
  • The road from Bangalore to Salem is a six lane beautiful road. This means, people tend to drive reckless. Drive safe.
  • On long weekends, there is a likelihood of long waiting time at Krishnagiri and Attibele toll booths as everyone going from Bangalore to Chennai or Kerala use this road. Ensure you leave early to beat the rush.
  • Hogenakkal falls has been reopened to tourists from yesterday. However, the coracle ride is banned due to heavy flow in the river. Check the news report in Times Of India here –  http://bit.ly/2gndN2j
  • At Hogennakal falls, be very careful while walking on the rocks. They will be sharp and slippery. No dangerous selfies please. No swimming in river. Pictures of falls in this post is courtesy of Vinay Venkatesh  . Check out his lovely album on Hogennakal falls here –  http://bit.ly/2yuuof3

Table of Contents

Quick facts about Yercaud

Yercaud tourist places.

As I have mentioned before, Yercaud is famous for its Natural Beauty. Hence you will find a many view points, gardens, water falls, a beautiful lake and some must visit temples.

Below is the list you should choose from if you are planning to visit Yercaud and plan accordingly.

One you have looked at the list below, you can look at the itinerary which I have followed if it works for you.

  • Yercaud Lake
  • Pagoda Point
  • The Servaroyan Temple
  • Ladies seat
  • Rose Garden
  • Botanical Garden
  • Killiyur Water falls
  • Sri Raja Rajeshwari Temple
  • Sri Annamalaiyar Temple

How to reach Yercaud

Yercaud can be reached by two ways. Either way you have to travel till Dharampuri. After Dharampuri either you take left and go via Deevattipatti or go to salem and then turn towards Yercuad.

Route 1# ( my preferred route ): Bangalore -> Hosur -> Kishangiri -> Dharampuri – > Salem -> Yercaud

Route2 # : Bangalore -> Hosur -> Kishangiri -> Dharampuri – > Deevattipatti -> Yercaud

Route 1 is preferred as it is NH44 till Salem and after that Salem Yercaud highway.

Yercaud itinerary

So we decided to be there over weekend and as I have mentioned before, majority of tourist who visit Yercaud are there over the weekend and hence pre booking hotel is very important.

Tips for travel

So our first tip ( tip #1 ) will be that book hotel / homestay near Yercaud Lake . Specifically if you are travelling with kids. Well if you want to enjoy resorts, there are many near Yercaud Lake as well, but good ones are deep inside.

Tip 2# – Plan in such a way that your travel time between spots are reduced. Remember in hills driving is a bit challange. I did not find much issue though, but many a places the roads are narrow. So the less you drive, the better it is.

Tip 3# – If you re planning to hire a taxi there, negotiate. The price they as for is almost 40% more. So you can definitely bargain. Also an auto rikshaw will be more economical. But it may not go to certain places like Annamaliyar temple or Shevroy temple as the climb is steep. So you need to check!

Tip 4# – The last 30 to 40 Kms stretch is with out petrol pump. So make sure that you fill sufficient petrol / diesel while you are on national highway 44 ( NH 44) Same with food. Plant to finish your food while your are on NH44.

Tip 5# – While returning back make sure that you leave Yercaud by 5.00 PM in evening so that you cover the ghat area while its still sunlight. A little bit earlier is still better.

As usual we always get late to start. More so if you have kids. And hence our plans of starting at 5 ends up with starting at 7.00 AM.

But if you are able to start early, is it good. In-fact you can start as early as possible. NH44 is always full of traffic. Only advise is to cover the last 30 to 40 Kms stretch in Day time.

Day 1 itinerary

So our first day was – Travel to Yercaud and visit to Killiyur Water falls, Yercaud Lake, Anna park, Pagoda point , Ladies Seat & Rose Garden and a nice dinner.

We were able to start only by 6.30 AM. By 7.15 AM we crossed the Hosur toll and we were into Tamil Nadu. Roads being good through out, it is always a fantastic drive on this road.

We did our breakfast on the way. There is a Food plaza after Kishangiri. There is a Mac Donald on the way so if kids are interested, it is one of the nice places to have breakfast.

We were able to reach Yeracaud only by 11.30 AM. So it took us 5 hours with 1 hour of stop in between for tea / coffee and break fast. Also since we had kids with us, we drove a bit slow.

As soon as we reached Yercuad our first stop was Killiyur Water falls . It is a beautiful water fall around 6 kms from Yercaud lake. Since our hotel was ay Yercaud lake, we thought of directly going to water falls and then coming back and check in to the hotel.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

We reached Killiyur Water falls by 11.50 and parked the car at the private parking place available there. The parking fee was Rs 30 /-. From parking lot you need to walk around 500 meters which includes a climb down of around 200 steps.

You will need atleast 60 to 90 mins to visit this place. Climbing down towards falls itself is a wonderful experience. But the best part is the falls itself. You can go and sit below the water fall. The water is cool and refreshing. Have a look at these cool photographs.

We were back by 1.30 and checked in . Out hotel was very near to Yercaud Lake and hence the plan was to cover Yercaud Lake and Anna park together in the evening.

We had some nice lunch at the hotel and by 2.30 PM were ready to go out again. We decided not to take a cab / taxi and drive by our own.

Driving in hills can be a challange some times, but is also fun. Our next stop on Day 1 was pagoda point

2.45 PM – 4.00 PM: Pagoda point , Ladies Seat & Rose Garden : Pagoda Point and Ladies seat – is a nice view point and you can enjoy the scenery all around. I think this place can be maintained a bit better, but any way it is a fun to be there with kids.

Rose Garden is a beautiful place next to Ladies seat. But there we no roses when we went.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

You need 1 to 1 hr 30 mins to visit these places. Not much to see except this view point and some nice photography options.

So by 4.30 we were back at hotel. Next was to cover Yercaud Lake and surrounding spots.

The advantage of staying near the lake is that you can just walk down. So this is what we did. Parked our car in hotel parking and walked down the road to Yercaud lake

4.45 PM to 6.45 PM – Yercaud Lake, Boating, Anna park, Eco Park, Aquarium and a nice coffee at Kappi House.

Yercaud Lake is a natural lake and has some good boating options. Entry to lake is nominal price but once you are inside you can buy boating tickets. Ticket ranges from Rs 130 to 500 based on type of boat.

Yercaud Lake

Next to Lake is Eco Garden, Anna Park and Aquarium and you can check out these options as well. All these are in walking distance of each other.

Anna Park Yercaud

And these spots do not take much time. kids will definitely enjoy these spots. Lot of places for them to run around.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

By 6.45 we were done visiting these places and a nice boat ride in Yercaud Lake. After that we headed to “Kappi House”. A coffee shop around the corner. They serve some very nice coffee and you will find lot of rush there. We enjoyed a nice cup of coffee , did some shopping of home made chocolates, Masala tea, some soveniours and headed back to hotel by 8.00 PM

We had our dinner at the hotel and called for the day ! It was nice Day 1 over all.

Day 2 itinerary

Our day 2 was more dedicated to the 4 must visit temples – Shri Annamaliyar temple , Sri Raja Rakeshwari Temple, Sri Shevroy temple , Sri Chakra Meru temple and Botanical Garden.

Except Annamaliyar temple, all other spots were on the same side and near to each other.

We wanted to head back to Bangalore by 4.00 PM since we wanted to cover the ghat area while it is still sunlight.

We got up a bit late and by the time we were ready it was already 9.30 AM. We checked out by 10.00 AM. Our plan was to view all above places and then leave for Bangalore.

Our first stop on Day 2 was Sri Annamaliyar temple . The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You get a nice view of surroundings.

Our next stop was Botanical garden . All these spots on day 2 are on same road so it was planned that way. Unfortunately we found the Botanical garden closed.

bangalore to yercaud trip plan

We enquired at the gate and were told that the Botanical Garden remains closed over the weekend. Not sure if this is true. Please do check this out. It was for sure closed on that day. But I don’t think they will keep it closed on weekends in general as this is one of the major tourist attractions here.

The next stop was Sri Raja Rajeshwari temple. It is a very small but beautiful and power full temple of the area.

Raja Rajeshwari Temple Yercaud

The temple is on a small hill top and you need to climb some 20 odd steps to reach to this beautiful temple. Dedicated to goddess Rajeshwari, this temple is said to be very powerful.

The next stop was to visit the most visited, most thrilling and one of the most sacred temples of the region Lord Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple).

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple) side view

The drive to the temple is one of the most beautiful and thrilling drive you will ever take. And once you reach at the temple, you are at the topmost area of Yercaud.

Servarayan Temple - main cave temple

The top of the hill on which this temple is located is a flat surface and looks like a plateau. From top the view is so amazing.

The temple is actually a cave temple and is dedicated to Lord Servarayan and Ma Kaveri. Goddess Kaveri is considered to be the protector deity of villages in this area and during month of May a big celebration is done at this temple where all the villagers / tribes of this area gather here.

We spent some good amount of time here.

After the Raja Rajeshwari temple if you go further you would come to a junction where if you go right you will come to Servarayan temple.

You will see all the marking there. It also says that if you go straight you will go to Bangalore.

Well take that route and it will take you to Sri Chakra Meru temple. You will need some 30 mins to visit that temple.

But please do not take that route to Bangalore. Come back to main city and take the way back to Salem and from there come back to Bangalore via NH44.

So our last stop was Sri Chakra Meru Temple. It is a newly built temple with lots of positive energy all around.

Entrance to chakra meru temple yercaud

We were able to finish all these spots by 2.30 and by 3.00 PM we were back to Yercaud bus stand.

We looked for a nice restaurant for lunch and by 4.30 PM were done and started back for Salem. By 5.30 PM we were crossing Salem and touched NH44.

We stopped at KFC on the way as kids wanted to eat burger and we had a nice cup of team at Sarvana Bhavan.

By 9.30 PM we touched Bangalore.

It was a nice 2 day trip , a relaxing one!

A Complete Road Trip Guide to Yercaud, The Jewel Of The South

RV

  • Monsoon Road Trips
  • Winter Road Trips

Before we begin, we would like to remind you again, we only provide details to off-beat, unknown or lesser known places to explore in each destination that we have personally been to, and not the details of touristy places or recommend places that we haven’t been to.

Yercaud, known as the ‘Jewel of South India’, is the most underrated or ignored hill station of South India. At an altitude of 1,620 mts (approx 5320 feet) above sea level, this place will remind you how old hill stations looked before they got too commercialized.

Why Should You Visit Yercaud

Yercaud is a destination that is filled with untouched forests, authentic and legendary coffee estates, lakes, spice plantations with 10% of the crowd that you generally see at famous hill stations. If you love hill stations where you can stay, eat and drive among the clouds (I mean literally)  and also prefer less crowded, pleasant, cozy, silent, green & flushed with abundant fresh air, this place is for you.

I personally feel, famous South Indian Hill Stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar, Coorg fall short on few aspects when compared to the natural and majestic beauty of Yercaud.

So, if you have not been to Yercaud yet, I would personally recommend you to travel at least once for a couple days to experience what I am about to describe here.

So, to begin with, if you are new to road trips or have never been to road trips before, then this would be a good start because of the following reasons:

  • If you are traveling from Bangalore, then this is just a 5 hour drive from the city. It is not too tiring and the highway that you will drive/ride on is a National Highway (NH44) from Bangalore - Salem, which is maintained in superb condition as this is a part of the Longest Highway in India (Old NH7)
  • You will get a chance to drive through 19 hair pin bends up the mountain (from Salem to Yercaud) and down it on the return journey. This road lasts for an hour and is well maintained as this is the primary entry road up the mountain. As it is not too long and well-maintained, it will give you an experience of how to drive on such roads and will prepare you for longer journeys across state highways and ghat roads which are not in great conditions and far more dangerous than this.
  • You have rest stops along the highway and the ghats so that you can stop at any time and relax/take a break when you get tired and you will always find people on the road in case you need help with anything.

Generally, most of the resorts/homestays have their check-in time set to 12 PM and so on, so the ideal time to leave Bangalore for this road trip would be around 5AM in the morning. Not too early and not too late so that you will even enjoy the twilight, won't feel sleepy from waking up too early and won't get caught in the afternoon heat on national highways.

Quick Check on Things to Pack Before you Leave Woollen head caps if traveling in winter. Rain caps & coats for any season. Boots that can work in rains and winters. No need for hand gloves but light sweaters if you are not too fond of the cold climate, Coolant & Distilled Water for your car radiator, Spare of extra bulbs for headlights, and tyre inflator kit, just in case.

On The Road

Start by 5 AM from Bangalore and you will reach Petrol Pump and Way Side Amenities  in Shoolagiri in 2 hours. This place has everything you need for you and your car. McDonalds, South Indian Breakfast, Cafe Coffee Day, Organic Foods, you name it and you got it here.

Get energized, and start driving again. You will be able to drive until Salem without a stop as this is all National Highway.  If you start early in the morning then just after the “Accident Zone” after Pagalpatti you will find a cozy small restaurant setup called SRS Family Restaurant .

Stop by here, have a coffee by your car and soak in the view that you get from the small mountain behind the restaurant. It is beautiful in the mornings with clouds kissing the peak of this hill and mist all over the place as the cool breeze soothes your soul from the city life that you spent over the week.

Now head toward Salem and follow your Google Maps which will take you to the base of Yercaud Hill Station. Here the cops will collect a toll from you ranging from 30 - 50 bucks and make your way to the top of the hill. You will drive through clean and beautiful roads, filled with monkeys and 19 hair pin bends. As you are climbing your way to the top the clouds will start greeting you and welcome you to this beautiful, serene hill station. It will take an hour for you to reach Yercaud from Salem.

Feel the cool breeze, freshness of the air and smoke rising out of chimneys from the restaurants on the road side, mist and clouds all around you if it is a cloudy day.  Ensure to have good headlights as visibility is poor on a rainy day as you will be surrounded by fog and clouds all day and night.

 places to stay in yercaud.

If you are traveling solo, you will find multiple options to stay ranging from home stays to shared rooms right near the Yercaud Lake.

If you are a couple or family, not looking for grand luxurious resorts, here are 2 places that we recommend where we have stayed personally ourselves.

Grand Palace Hotel & Spa ( Website Link ) The price ranges from 4500 - 6000 bucks depending upon the season and deals that you could get from Booking.com or Agoda. (We prefer Agoda as the booking process is easy and by far this website has lowest prices compared to any other site for Indian Hotel & Resorts.  This resort is located on the edge of the hill and has some amazing views. You could see the valley all green in a second and filled with fog and clouds the next.  With Infinity Pool, Outdoor Bar & Restaurant, Indoor Bar & Restaurant (Bartender Sheldon, is a cool & amazing guy. Makes you cocktails of your choice and customizes as per how you want them to taste) and Children’s Play area, comfortable, spacious rooms with western amenities, this place has everything that you would need to make your stay here a pleasant one. Check out some images of the place here.  Infinity Pool Open bar by the Pool The View from Your Room
Golden Nest, Yercaud ( Website Link ) Now this place is for people who do not prefer too much luxury but would like a spacious place to stay at a budget. Room prices range from 1500-2500 here. The best part about this place is the view (see images below). Do not expect room service and high end amenities here. You will get a decent and safe place to stay with amazing views all around you.  If you are here to explore the unknown or lesser known places of Yercaud and not to spend too much time at the hotel but at the same time in need of comfort and good room service this is the place to stay.’ Entrance to the Resort

If you are looking to stay at the resort, make a weekend out of it by enjoying some adventure activities in the resort, get a good healing & relaxing massages,  and not drive around too much, then you can check out other resorts such as GRT Trails Yercaud, La Four Seasons, Sterling Yercaud, The Story Resorts & Spa.

If you want to experience staying in tents but comfort at the same time then WOW Bison Woods is a perfect choice for you.

If you are here to explore the unknown or lesser known places of Yercaud and not to spend too much time at the hotel but at the same time in need of comfort and good room service this is the place to stay.’

What To Do In Yercaud

Check in by around 12. Freshen up and have your lunch at the resort if that is comfortable to you or head out near the Yercaud lake and you will find restaurants everywhere here. Pick a place as per your choice and have some local South Indian dishes made hot and spicy in that cold weather.

Lunch - Karuppiah Chettinadu Mess

One restaurant if you are in a mood to have some authentic South Indian Food is Karuppiah Chettinadu Mess . Decent, old place with waiters who can speak Hindi. Interior, electricals and the ambience of the place will take you back to the good old 90s in seconds. Food is served quickly and hot.

PS; There is another place called Sweet Rascal , a pure non vegetarian restaurant. But let’s keep that for Day 2. Why Day 2? You will find out below ;)

Kottachedu Kari Raman Temple

Leave by 2PM to explore the Lesser Known roads and an Old Temple, Kottachedu kari Raman Temple , a small, unknown rustic temple nestled in the dense forests of silver oaks and pepper plantations.  Follow the route as shown on Google Maps.

Remember, the 1st thing about exploring the place is that, It is the Drive, Not the Destination.

The road to this place is through some dense silver oak forest, with absolutely no traffic at all! You will find a vehicle or two cruising on these roads. Clouds engulf these forests like thick white smoke and the drizzle makes the greens around you look like they are alive. Birds chirping, crickets cricketing and black tar roads dripped with water from the rain and drizzle.

An absolute paradise for nature lovers. Drive slowly as the visibility is poor and roads are slippery. As you cruise through these curvy bends, you will find small openings where you can park your car on the side, and climb into the forest for a small trek into them. Experience the feel of the forest, listen to the music of the trees as they swing to the breeze and rain. You will feel like you are in the middle of dense rain forests, with absolutely no one around you.

Do not wander deep and be on the lookout for leeches and reptiles. Wear proper footwear as the forest floor will be muddy and slippery.

After driving for an hour, you will reach this place which does not have an entrance from the highway road. Park your car or if you have a 4WD, get off road and drive to the temple entrance. Secluded from all the crowds, you will find this rustic temple welcome you to peace and tranquility. It will be closed most of the time so just wander around and experience nature at its best!

Try to leave this place by around 4 PM and now it is time to head to a waterfall partially known and absolutely no crowd by 5 - 5 30 PM. Kiliyur Falls . Imagine having the entire waterfall to yourself. Yeah that is what I am talking about.

Kiliyur Falls

Park your car at the parking area where you will find small thelas, selling maggi, toasts, chai & coffee. It is a short trek down the pebbled path (approx 1km) to the waterfall. The majestic views of the mountains around you and clouds all around you will make you think you are in a different world altogether. By this time, people who know about this place will also leave as it will be close to sunset. As this is not a tourist place you will not find any barricades or walls, just some old cement steps to walk down right into the stone cold water that cascades down the hill in front you.

Do not step deep into the water as the currents will be stronger and rocks slippery during monsoons.

Enjoy the waterfall, snap some pics and videos for your reels and leave the place before it gets too dark. By now you will see that all you can see is just the white fog with no lights back until you reach the parking area.

As there are no people around, the place is safe but do not wander much when there is no light. Have a hot chai or coffee and head back to your hotel. By now you will realize what it is to drive around in the clouds with absolutely 0 visibility.

There are not many good food options available outside, so it is better to eat at your resort and have a drink or two to enjoy the night.

Have breakfast, and try to leave the resort/hotel by 9-10 AM.

Before you leave, do not forget to call The Sweet Rascal for lunch reservation as they take customers on Appointment basis only. You should be able to reach there by 1PM.

Vishnu, the owner of the place,  is very particular about the kind of people he lets in. He personally talks to the customers and understands your food preference before he confirms your reservation. Extremely polite and a true gentleman.

The Lady’s Seat

First place for Day 2 would be a touristy place, Lady’s Seat

Situated in the center of Yercaud with the Rose Garden around it, through which you will have to take a walk to reach this hill top.

If you love plants and would like to explore the place, please do so. As it is early in the morning you will find the climate enticing and mist rising all around you.

Lady’s Seat is a small structure built on top of the hill where you can experience the view of the entire valley, sunrays breaking through the clouds at the height just above you. You will be amazed with the views of this place. Here are a few pictures to show what the place looks like.

Spend some time sitting in the park or at the lady’ seat to absorb the views.

Yercaud Lady's Seast

View from the Lady's Seat

Lunch - The Sweet Rascal

Wrap up by 12 PM so that you can head to The Sweet Rascal (purely Non Veg) for Lunch.

Sweet Rascal is a place owned by the local businessman, Dr Vishu,  amid raw natural beauty. You will be able to see plants all around you and naughty quotes written on the walls by Vishnu. If you are a fan of cosy natural habitats, this place is a paradise for you.

Once you reach, Vishnu will help you create a lunch menu based on your preferences from chicken to exotic seafood. His food is homely, fresh and delicious. As they do not keep the food prepared, they might take 40mins to 1 hr to serve your dishes. But it is worth the wait. And as you are sitting in nature's lap you won't even notice 40 mins gone by.

By the time you have your lunch and walk around the surroundings, it will be close to 2 PM by now.

It is now time to head to Cauvery Peak .

Note, coffee tours and the estate closes at 5 PM. So please reach there by 3 PM to enjoy the estate.

Cauvery Peak Coffee Estate

Cauvery Peak is known for Cauvery Peak Coffee Estate , a 150 year old coffee estate, known for making one of the best Arabica coffee in India. They import their seeds from all over the world to ensure to create the best arabica coffee in India. It is an hour drive away, nestled away from the city among the many spice and coffee plantations with its own lake and viewpoint inside the 200 acre estate.

Follow the map as per the screenshot below. The route is more beautiful and scenic than the Kottachedu kari Raman Temple route.

On the way you will find tiny waterfalls and viewpoints that you will never want to miss. If it is cloudy, you will be literally driving among the clouds and you will be able to see the clouds wrap you and your car all the way along.

These are narrow and windy roads, so be careful while you drive.

Here you will have different activities that you can experience. The first is the complete coffee estate tour. Here the guide will take you through the complete coffee preparation process right from the planting the coffee trees to crushing the beans. You will also be explained about the 3 estates that Cauvery Peak has in Yercaud and the difference in the coffee made at each estate.

Also you will get to witness the beauty of the lake inside the estate, with the most beautiful background.

Entire tour will cost you 500-1000 per car.

At the end of the tour, head to the shop, have a coffee first, you cannot miss it! Sit in the lawn and enjoy it as the coffee and the views are deliciously mesmerizing.

Buy some spices and coffee based on your taste. We always buy them whenever we travel here.

As this is nestled deep in the forest the rains are unpredictable, so carry necessary raincoats just in case.

There are no other places to see here so now it is time to head back. While heading back, take the route as shown in the screenshot below rather than the same one you just drove on.

Screenshot 2022-09-18 at 9.09.32 PM

Now this route is literally untouched and only the locals use it. The roads are filled with leaves from years and mud on the road side and you will get to explore some of the most deep hidden resorts here and tallest silver oaks covered with pepper crawlers. Roll down your windows, and switch off any music that is playing and let the clouds of this place embrace you and listen to the music from the birds and leaves of the swaying branches. Don't forget to make small stops and just absorb the amazing views.

That’s it. You have successfully explored Yercaud! In case you want to even explore some tourist destinations, visit Yercaud Lake the next morning before you head out of Yercaud, early in the morning.

Head back to your resort, have a drink and have a good sleep before you begin on your next drive in the morning, either back to your home or any other place that you are exploring next.

As I always say at the end, Travel Responsibly and Ensure to leave the places as they were and please do not litter. Reduce plastic usage as much as possible. People in Tier 2, 3 cities use plastics everywhere. Cutlery, straws etc as they are not fully aware about the consequences and effect of these on nature and us.

Interesting fact is, most of them do not understand even when explained. Very few understand. So it is up to us to be careful and reject plastics when offered as we understand, that even a single straw saved from usage, can make a huge difference.

If you want to continue the journey and explore few other places that you can easily head from here then, I would recommend Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coonoor and Coimbatore as the next stops.

You can read about our road trip journey to these hill stations here.

In case you have any recommendations, or places that we missed to discover, or know about some unknown places in Yercaud, feel free to share your ideas & thoughts in the comments section below. We would love to hear from you!

Pro Road Tripper. Love exploring places that are rarely known and live the life of a traveller rather than as a tourist. Always prefer to be on the road rather than anything else!

A Trip to Yercaud – a picturesque Hill Station in South India

This time we happened to make a trip to Yercaud, a lesser known hill station of South India. But being less known in no way demeans the beauty of this picturesque hill station. Yercaud is located in Salem district of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. And it is part of the Shevaroy Hills in Eastern Ghats, which are widely known for their orange groves, coffee, fruits and spice plantations. Yercaud gets it name from Yercaud Lake and forests around this lake. In Tamil, “Yeri” means lake and “Kaddu” means forest. Both of these words together make Yercaud which means Lake Forest.

Trip to Yercaud

Yercaud is located at a distance of 30 KM from Salem, around 250 KM from Bangalore and around 350 KM from Chennai. It is a great choice as a weekend gateway from the Bangalore. And one can easily plan a trip to Yercaud from Bangalore. After Ooty and Kodikanal , Yercaud is the third hill station in Tamil Nadu that we have visited. Although we have been to several other hill stations in South India . Which include a trip to Coorg , wherein we stayed in a homestay – Casa Coorg , Chikmagaluru wherein again we stayed in a homestay – The Courtyard Homestay . And B R Hills where we spent a weekend in Gorukana resort . Also, Munnar in Kerala . Wish there were similar homestays & eco resorts in Yercaud!

Planning a trip to Yercaud

I must admit that this trip to Yercaud was not a very thoroughly planned trip for us. In the beginning of August we planned to utilize upcoming long weekend, which was going to come with our national holiday 15th August. So, we thought to visit some place near to Bangalore which we have not visited before. Bangalore being the silicon valley of India, many peoples here are always on look out for a long weekend. So that they could get a chance to get a break from there long tiring work schedule and could revive themselves. Hence, until if you have not planned well in advance it is very difficult to get accommodation in famous and well known tourist places around Bangalore.

And we also faced the penalty of starting late with our planning. Accommodations at most of the famous places we tried out were already full. So, as a plan B we started looking for some not very known and as popular places. And in this course of action we zeroed down to Yercaud and planned a trip to Yercaud. Although Yercaud was also not as freely available as we thought. But we managed to get an accommodation.

Trip to Yercaud

Journey Day

It was a road journey. And on the day we started our trip to Yercaud around 6 AM in the morning from Bangalore. We reached Yercaud around 11 AM, after a 5 hours of scenic driver. And this time includes all the pit stops we had taken for breakfast and other refreshments, which may sum up to around 1 hour. The route taken by us was through Bangalore – Hosur -Krishnagiri – Salem – Yercaud. Most of the part of this route is very scenic and a visual treat to drive through. It reminded us one of the most scenic driver that we had taken to Kodaikanal few years back.

Things to do in Yercaud

There are many places of attractions in Yercaud, ranging from lakes to view points to gardens to water falls. So, one can plan places to cover based on ones interest and schedule. These are the few places which we could visit in our limited timeframe. Moreover, these places are quite popular among tourists and are worth to give a shot:

Yercaud Lake

A trip to Yercaud is not complete without visiting Yercaud Lake. As mentioned, Yercaud gets it name from this lake. And, this lake is located in the centre of Yercaud town and is at a distance of 1.5KM from Yercaud bus station. Yercaud lake, also known as Emerald lake is spanned in a very large area. Moreover, this is a completely natural lake.  Also, this lake is surrounded by cloud laden hills, gardens and well groomed large trees. Whole area around the lake feels very vibrant and pleasant. So, I must say this is a visual treat to be there for anyone.

Trip to Yercaud

Deer Park and Leisure Park

Deer park and Leisure park located on the bank of the lake is also a major tourist attraction. Especially deer park will be fun for kids. This park is not very big in size but is well maintained. Other than deers this park has many other species such as swans, peacock and hamsters. Also, there was a kids play area inside where kids can enjoy their time. Further, at different spots they have placed swings, where one can sit and relax swinging.

Trip to Yercaud

Botanical Garden

Botanical garden is one of the top attractions of Yercaud. It is located at a distance of 2.5 KM from Yercaud bus station and around 3 KM from Yercaud lake. Yercaud botanical garden is house of various exotic species of flowers and plants. Further this garden is divided in multiple sections such as butterfly garden, herbal garden, rock garden, foliage garden, water garden, sensory garden topiary garden and bonsai garden. If one enjoys being amidst nature and loves to explore various types of plants and flowers, botanical garden is a must visit for him or her.

Garden has amazing range of rare plants and flowers along with many preserved endanger species. Among all these one of the most attractive part is Orchidarium. The National Orchidarium is established in the year 1963 and it spread in an area of 18.4 hectares. It is the third largest Orchidarium in India and is run by the Botanical Survey of India. The Orchidarium houses many endangered species of orchids. And it has a large collection of native orchids. Similar to Orchidarium, the green house is another major attraction in the garden.

Kiliyur Falls

Kiliyur Falls is located at a distance of 4 km from Yercaud Bus Stand. Visit to Kiliyur falls is a combination of serenity and adventure. So I will recommend to add visiting Kiliyur falls in your itinerary during your trip to Yercaud, but with a small disclaimer. If you are traveling with small kids and/or older people, then reaching to the point of Kiliyur falls will be little challenging. As, in the first part of your journey you will have to take a slant walk of around 1 km. Which is still manageable. But after that you will have to take some 200 plus narrow steep stairs to reach to the final point where fall is located. And climbing those steep narrow stairs is little daunting task and you will have to be careful with your steps.

But after taking all this trouble once you reach to the falls, you will not regret it at all. And all the tedious effort you had put behind to reach here will feel all worthy. You will encounter one of the most beautiful waterfall. Kiliyur falls is very live. You will witness the plethora of water crushing against stones. Chillness and freshness spread in the environment around the waterfall gives a mesmerizing feeling. Greenery around this waterfall is bliss to watch. I myself visited this place with parents and a 3.5 years old kid.

Lady’s Seat

Lady’s Seat is a famous view point in Yercaud from where you can get panoramic view of Salem town, ghat road and valley. In real, it is cluster of naturally made rocks in shape of a seat. As per local belief, a white English lady used to spend the evenings watching the panoramic view from this rock. Hence it got its name, Lady’s Seat. It is also a wonderful place to watch sunset. And, in dark you can get amazing view of glittering Salem town. Lady’s seat is located on the South West of Shevaroy hills , at a distance of 2 KM for Yercaud Bus Stand.

Pagoda Point

This an another famous view point in Yercaud located in eastern part of hills. It is at a distance of 4 KM from Yercaud Bus Stand. This point is away from hustle bustle of Yercaud main town. Pagoda point is also known as Pyramid point and it got its name from the for piles of four stones that have been arranged in the shape of Pyramid. Pagoda point is very famous for its wonderful surroundings and one can feel the aroma and chillness of nature at this point. Also, here one can observe amazing sunrise and sunset views.

Near Pagoda point there is a temple of Sri Rama. And this makes it also and important pilgrimage site which also attracts many devotees.

Trip to Yercaud

My Special Recommendation: Hotel Great Trails Yercaud By GRT

Plan to visit Hotel Great Trail (GRT) in Yercaud. Mainly it is a residential place and if you could get a chance to stay in this hotel during your stay in Yercaud then it is well good. But even if you could not get a chance to stay in this hotel, still you can plan to visit it. This hotel has a restaurant which is open to outsiders also. So you can plan a breakfast, lunch or dinner whatever suits you.

The reason why I asked to visit this hotel is its open air lawn. Hotel has a valley facing lawn which is accessible to in-house guest as well as to restaurants guest. And from this lawn you get a chance to capture heavenly beautiful view of hills and valleys. And this experience will be kind of lifetime experience. If small kids are accompanying you, then they will get ample of place to run and play. And, If you are visiting after dark then you can get a wonderful chance to capture sparkling view of valley with all lights lit.

Trip to Yercaud

Other Places of Interest

Apart from what I have mentioned above there are many other famous places which one can plan to visit during ones trip to Yercaud. Some of them includes:

Anna park (1 km from Yercaud Bus Stand), Tipperary Viewpoint (2 km from Yercaud Bus Stand), The Grange (a heritage site 2 km from Yercaud Bus Stand), Sri Raja Rajeswari Temple (4 km from Yercaud Bus Stand), Shevaroyan Temple (7 km from Yercaud Bus Stand) etc.

Also you can take a walk of Yercaud town. Yercaud is very green and natural. So taking a stroll in town will be an exercise of great worth. You will get chance to capture fresh shots of Oxygen and to feel the closeness of nature.

Trip to Yercaud

Travel Tips

Best time to travel.

Although you can plan for a trip to Yercaud through out the year. But post the season of monsoon in India , from October to February will be quite pleasant with a temperature normally varying from 12°C to 25°C. Summer (March-May) is also good season to visit with temperature normally varying from 16°C to 30°C+ . If you are too much in sight seeings then you can avoid monsoon which ranges from July to September.

Transportation Option

Road trip is the best way to reach Yercaud. Either you can use your personal vehicle or you can hire a cab from all nearby major cities. Also you can go to Salem by bus and from there you can hire taxi/cab to go to Yercaud. You can also reach till Salem by train and from there you can hire taxi or cab to go to Yercaud.

Clothing and Wearables

In Winter season keep proper warm clothes with you. But in other seasons also keep light warm cloth handy. Because you may start feeling chillness anytime depending on weather condition.

Keep proper walking shoes with you. It will be be very useful in exploring Yercaud town on your feet.

Keep umbrella handy to deal with any unpredictable monsoon.

Sunglasses will also come very handy as when you get to face Sun in Yercaud, most of the time it will be of high intensity.

Communication

Majorly spoken language is Tamil. However at most of the resorts, hotels and major restaurants people will be able to communicate in English also. But when you get to deal with some locals or small vendors then it may be difficult to communicate in Hindi or English. As most of them won’t be well versed in these languages. But still you can communicate with the help of cab driver or some other available person nearby who are able to communicate in Hindi or English

You can also use some translation apps to manage communicate gap to some extent.

It's around 250 KM from the Bangalore and the till Salem you can cruise on the Highways at the good speeds. There are a lot of good places to eat on the way.

We left early around 6AM and stopped for the breakfast once we crossed the city. It's a good food joint with CCD, MC-D and other south Indian restaurants, you can find easily on the left side along with the HP petrol pump after crossing around 50KM from the city.

The highways are bliss till you reach Salem. If you love corners then 20 hairpins on the way to Yercaud won't disappoint you for sure.

I stayed at Sterling resort, which has good location and ambiance. The spa experience is rejuvenating. On the other hand, I felt the food was average as per the prize.

Overall, it's a wonderful weekend getaway :)

Photo of A perfect weekend road trip drive from Bangalore - Yercaud :) 8/8 by Kapil Kumar

Note: Don't follow the google maps till you reach Salem. Google maps show a shortcut to reach Yercaud before we reach Salem, which leads to the horrible small roads through the hills and woods. The road condition is very bad and that too its' very steep. I had trouble even switching to 2nd gear on most of the turns. As its very remote section so not safe too.

The best way is to reach Salem first and then use the exact destination in yercaud.

The other thing to be noted about the poor wifi(which is only available at the reception) and no mobile signals, so make sure you don't expect any office work related calls :)

I hope you enjoy the drive to this wonderful place too :)

11 Best Weekend Getaways From Bangalore, India

O nce a retirement village for the wealthy, known for its year-round spring weather and peaceful ambience, Bangalore (Bengaluru) today has transformed into the Silicon Valley of India. If you live in Bangalore or are visiting Bangalore for work, the best way to rewind after a hectic work-week is to travel away from the bustle of the city.

Good news is that there’s no dearth of weekend getaways from Bangalore. History, UNESCO heritage sites, mountains, wildlife and beaches – name it and you can have it all within a 350 km radius of the city. It’s easy to be spoilt for choices. So based on my personal experience I have selected the top 11 places to visit with kids and family during the weekends.

1. Mysore (145 km from Bangalore)

Just a scenic drive away from Bangalore lies the majestic city of Mysore. Renowned for its grand palaces, vibrant markets, and rich cultural heritage, Mysore offers a delightful blend of history and charm.

You can visit Mysore even on an exhaustive day trip from Bangalore, but I highly recommend slowing down with your family in this lovely city.

Explore the opulent Mysore Palace, followed by the art gallery, Mysore wax museum and a trip to the cinematic Vrindavan gardens in the evening.

On the next day stroll through the bustling Devaraja Market, and visit Chamundi Hills to seek blessings at the Chamundi temple or simply enjoy the views.

If you are visiting with kids, don’t miss out on the Mysore Zoo – one of the best zoological parks in India.

2. Yercaud (215 km from Bangalore)

Yercaud in the local language Tamil means a land round the lake. And that’s what it is – a charming hill station in the Eastern ghats around the sparkling Emerald Lake.

Reach Yercaud by driving through the 32-km loop road famous for its scenic viewpoints and hairpin belts. Embark on leisurely nature walks through fragrant spice plantations, take a boat ride on the serene Emeral Lake, also known as the Yercaud lake and spend time with your kids in Anna Park and rose garden.

With its cool climate and pristine landscapes, Yercaud is the perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore for all seasons.

3. Sakleshpur (220 km from Bangalore)

Tucked away in the verdant Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Known for its lush coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and gushing waterfalls, Sakleshpur offers a picturesque backdrop for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Trek to the historic star-shaped castle – Manjarabad Fort. Unwind amidst the tranquil ambiance of Bisle Ghat, and soak in the beauty of Magajahalli Falls.

With its pristine beauty and tranquil atmosphere, Sakleshpur is the perfect destination for a peaceful weekend escape.

4. Coorg (240 km from Bangalore)

Venture a bit farther from Bangalore, and you’ll discover the enchanting hill station of Coorg, also known as the “Scotland of India.” Famous for its verdant coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and cascading waterfalls, Coorg offers a serene retreat amidst nature’s bounty.

There are two main towns in Coorg where you can plan your stay – Madikeri and Virajpet. Madikeri is the central point for exploring the historic Madikeri Fort, the majestic Abbey Falls and the Omkareshwar Temple. Kids will enjoy spending time in the landscaped park of Raja’s Seat in the evening.

From Virajpet you can visit the more offbeat places like Talacauvery and Iruppu Falls.A road trip to Coorg from Bangalore will take you through the most scenic roads of Western Ghats. You can also reach Madikeri by overnight bus from Bangalore.

5. Chikmagalur (250 km from Bangalore)

Visit the land of coffee, the place that claims to have introduced coffee to India – Chikmagalur. Whether you are visiting with kids or elderly parents, or just with a group of young adventurous people, Chikmagalur has something for everyone.

Chikmagalur is best experienced in a homestay hosted by the owners of small coffee estates in the region. They will take you on a tour of their coffee estate and blow you away with their hospitality.

You can book a jeep for your sightseeing adventure visiting the Jhari Falls, Baba Budan giri hills, lakes, and trekking spots.

Kids will enjoy visiting Mahatma Gandhi Park with a short toy train joyride in the hills.

You can reach Chikmagalur from Bangalore by overnight buses that ply daily from Bangalore.

6. Ooty (270 km from Bangalore)

Fondly referred to as the “Queen of Hills,” Ooty captivates visitors with its rolling tea estates, picturesque gardens, and cool climate.

Ooty is famous for its scenic tea gardens, the floral and faunal diversity and the Nilgiri Mountain railways – a UNESCO world heritage site.

Take a scenic ride on Nilgiri Toy train, stroll through the vibrant flower gardens of Government Botanical Garden, or embark on a boat ride across the serene Ooty Lake.

You can reach Ooty by overnight bus, train or by driving.

7. Shimoga (280 km from Bangalore)

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Shimoga, also known as the “Gateway to the Western Ghats.”

Drive straight to the majestic Jog Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in India and admire the poetic beauty of nature. The trek through the dense forests of Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary or book a safari with kids.

Then you can visit the 1000-year-old Kelladi temple and watch sunset at the Mattur Lake. Next day drive to the Agumbe rain forest or trek to the Kabbaledurga fort.

The main highlight of Shimoga however, are the hidden lakes that are not commercialized for any tourist activity. That’s why the best way to reach Shimoga is by a road trip so that you can stop at these obscure lakes and do nothing but just stand and stare.

8. Wayanad (280 km from Bangalore)

Venture into the pristine wilderness of Wayanad, a picturesque district nestled amidst the Western Ghats in Kerala. Explore the lush tea estates of Vythiri, trek to the stunning viewpoints of Chembra Peak, or immerse yourself in the serene ambiance of Pookode Lake.

If you love wildlife safaris, then plan your stay in Sultan Bathery. Take a safari through Wayanad Tiger reserve – one of the best places in India to spot tigers and wild elephants. Then you can visit the prehistoric Edakkal caves for a unique experience.

There are regular buses to Wayanad by which you can reach Wayanad in the early morning on Saturday. You can prebook a car from hotel for pickup and early check-in.

9. Pondicherry (315 km from Bangalore)

Experience a blend of French colonial charm and Indian culture in the coastal town of Pondicherry. This erstwhile French colony of India still retains some of the French vibes that have perfectly blended with the cosmopolitan new India.

Stroll on the beautiful Pondicherry promenade, explore the historic Bharthi Park, the opulent Botanical Garden and the several French-era churches of Pondicherry. A walking or cycling tour of the white town of Pondicherry will transport you to France.

While in Pondicherry don’t miss a trip to Auroville – an experimental global city across the beautiful Auroville beach. Then sail to Paradise Island for the most spectacular views and beach activities.

The best way to reach Pondicherry is by an overnight train to the Puducherry station. It’s also a very smooth ride from Bangalore to Pondicherry if you manage to leave early morning before the infamous Bangalore traffic kicks in.

10. Hampi (340 km from Bangalore)

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Watch the ruins of Vijayanagara empire come back to life infront of your eyes in this open-air museum.

Marvel at the architectural wonders of Hampi Bazaar, climb the iconic Matanga Hill for panoramic views, or witness the breathtaking sunset during a coracle ride in the Tungabhadra River.

On the next day drive to North Hampi to see the iconic stone chariot of Vittala Temple. It is one of the most famous monuments of India that often feature on the currency notes. Climb the Monkey Temple and engage in live music and merriment in the Hippie island.

If you are visiting with kids, skip Hippie island since the environment may not be particularly kid-friendly. Instead travel to Daroji wildlife sanctuary to spot the Indian sloth bear and for bird-watching.

11. Mahabalipuram (350 km from Bangalore)

This is another UNESCO heritage site that records the artistic and engineering genius of the 7 th- century Pallava dynasty of India. Embark on a journey to the historic town of Mahabalipuram, renowned for its magnificent rock-cut temples and sculptures. What’s more, it’s on the shore of the Bay of Bengal!

The magnificent Shore Temple, the intricately carved five monolithic structures called Pancha Rathas, or the bas-relief architectural marvel called Arjuna’s penance – each monument is steeped in glorious history.

With its rich cultural heritage and stunning coastal landscapes, Mahabalipuram offers a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty for a memorable weekend getaway.

To reach Mahabalipuram, take a train or flight to Chennai and then book a short ride to Mahabalipuram. You can also drive all the way to Mahabalipuram from Bangalore.

A Few Tips on Choosing Your Destination

If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to just relax in the lap of nature, book a luxury resort in Coorg or Chikmagalur. Surprisingly these are also the best places for adventure with friends offering trekking trails and whitewater rafting.

If you are looking for an exhaustive sightseeing tour of historic gems go for Hampi or Mahabalipuram. If you are visiting with kids, I highly recommend Yercaud, Ooty, and Pondicherry because your itinerary can be packed with kid-friendly activities.

If you love shopping, then Mysore is a paradise for you, while if you want to go off-the-beaten-track, choose Shimoga.

Opt for the high-altitude hill stations in summer for respite from the rising mercury levels. I recommend Yercaud, Kodaikanal and Ooty.

Monsoon is the best time for the Western Ghats, also known as the monsoon ghats. This is the time to visit places like Chikmagalur, Coorg and Wayanad. The mountains come alive with waterfalls in full force and lush greenery all around.

I recommend planning trips to the beaches like Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, and Bekal in the winter in India.

That’s a wrap to the post. I am sure you will enjoy these places for your weekend trips from Bangalore.
