INTRODUCTION

Bargi Dam is built on Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh state of Central India. It is just 40kms south of Jabalpur city. Out of 30 major dam projects on Narmada river, it is one of the first completed dam on river. Bargi dam construction started in year 1974 and completed in year 1990. Main dam is constructed near Bargi village, close to National Highway-7 (connects Jabalpur- Nagpur) due to which it has been named Bargi Dam. It serves in irrigation projects and hydropower generation of 90 MW capacity. In addition to irrigation and power generation, dam is also used for tourism promotion on region. For tourism promotion, Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation has opened its well furnished hotel for peaceful accommodation and entertaining visitors at this site.

At a distance of 33 km from Jabalpur, Bargi Dam is an earthen dam situated at Bargi near Jabalpur. It is one of the biggest dams in Madhya Pradesh and among the major tourist places to visit near Jabalpur. Bargi Dam is a massive dam constructed on the river Narmada near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The construction of the dam started in 1974 and was completed in 1990. Bargi Dam is one of the first dams built on the Narmada River, out of the 30 proposed dams. The dam has a height of 226 feet and it extends over a length of 5.4 km. The dam holds great significance as it is one of the major sources of water supply in Jabalpur and the surrounding areas. Two major irrigation projects, named Bargi Diversion Project and Rani Avantibai Lodhi Sagar Project, have been developed by the Bargi Dam administration. Besides irrigation projects and power generation, the dam is also used for tourism purposes. The backwater of the dam has been converted into a lake that offers various water activities like speed boating, water scooters, and paddle boating. Besides, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken the initiative and opened a resort facing the dam which gives a breathtaking view of the entire dam and the reservoir. The dam is also popular for bird-watching activities, especially in the evenings during the migratory season. Bargi Dam a perfect destination for river cruising in Madhya pradesh

Narmada is one of the cleanest river in India and I was fortunate to live in a city at the bank of Narmada for 11 years. This year during summer I planned to revisit the Bargi dam . I have been there multiple times and witness the development through the years. The bargi dam resviour is clam and clean, It is soothing to watch shoreless deep blue water.

There are lots of small hills on the way to the reservoir. We stopped at few and climbed to check if we can see the reservoir from the top and yes we were able to do so. During my last visit in Christmas the Bargi dam reservoir was crowded and you need to stand in long queues to ride the cruise or try hands of water sports.

In summer it was empty we were the only tourist waiting for the ride. The water sports center and resort in maintained by MP tourism department.There is only one restaurant in that area so either pack some snacks and food for you or choose the limited option.

The reservoir created by Bargi dam is a lake of about 75 km in length and 4.5 km width, spreading over 267.97 km². It is so huge you will not see the shores for the Bargi dam reservoir.

During our last visit in summer we choose to try the cruising on the river Narmada at Bargi Dam. there are lot more options like paddle boats in a water outlet near main dam, speed boat ride and river cruise. Few adventure sports are also organized during Christmas and new year. The sports club which organize cruising opens at 9 am.

For better view choose the upper deck. I loved the speed boat ride more as it is exclusive for your group and the feel of fast moving boat and wind in my hair was wonderful.

Winter is the best time to visit Bargi Dam. As water sports are also organized during winter It is trilling and exiting thing to try.

Summers are hot. If you are planning a visit during summer then visit Bargi Dam during early morning or evening.Monsoon experience heavy rainfall. The dams gates are open during this time and water level is high in monsoon.

Bargi Dam is one of the first completed dams out of the chain of 30 major dams to be constructed on Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. The Narmada is the largest river in Madhya Pradesh, flowing towards the west and falling in the Arabian Sea. A lake of about 75 km in length and spreading over 268 km². In Jabalpur, Mandla and Seoni districts is formed when the water is impounded up to the dam. They start fro 10 AM to Sunset....and it is really amazing...the scenic view specially around 5 to 6 pm in summers at sunset.
