by Swapnil Sanghavi | Oct 20, 2020 | Himachal , Manali , Shimla | 0 comments

Is Shimla better or Manali? Somehow, I have been asked this question time and again, mostly from people who have limited time and can’t decide which place to pick.

Although both Shimla and Manali are very popular Himachal towns, both have a completely different character. I will help you in choosing one of the two for your next trip.

Choosing between the two is not as simple as it sounds. Your choice of the destination would depend on your preferences as an individual. So, I suggest you stay with me till the end of the blog to get your answer to is Shimla better or Manali.

Is Shimla better or Manali_

Is Shimla Better or Manali: Consider These 9 Points Before Making Your Pick

To find out which one’s a better destination: Shimla or Manali, you will have to evaluate it based of several factors. Below I have compared the two Himachali towns on the basis of nine factors.

Take a look at these comparisons, see what you value more and make a pick between Shimla or Manali

1. Which is more Accessible: Shimla or Manali?

Let’s talk about accessibility first. When it comes to accessibility, Both Shimla and Manali can be reached easily from any major Indian City. You can drive to both places easily and also, use public transport.

Reaching Shimla

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and hence, very well connected. Reaching Shimla is fairly easy and you can reach the city by a combination of road and rail/plane.

Reaching Manali

Manali is again one of the most famous travel destinations in Himachal. Therefore, just like Shimla, it is also easily accessible.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali, when it comes to accessibility, I would say both are accessible but Shimla can be reached in fewer hours from the neighbouring cities.

2. Which Has Better/ More Sightseeing Options: Shimla or Manali?

Shimla and Manali both have some beautiful places and spots to cover. What you choose for your next trip depends on what you are looking to do on your next holiday.

Best Places to Visit in Shimla

Shimla was the summer capital of the British Empire in India. The influence of the colonial past is clearly visible in every aspect of Shimla. If you are someone interest in architecture, I would suggest you visit Shimla. Some of the places that every architecture buff must visit in Himachal are – Heritage Walk, Gaiety Theatre, Christ Church, IIAS, State Library, etc.

Shimla is also blessed with natural beauty, but over the years, the city has seen a lot of commercialization. Construction all over the city has reduced the charm of the clean and green hill station.

Best Places to Visit in Manali

Manali is one of the most beautiful places in Himachal. The whole setting of the town is ravishing. The tall mountains, the Parvati river, and pine trees make this an apt destination to get lost in the beauty of nature. Although Manali is also slowly getting crowded, you can still find a quiet spot to contemplate and admire nature’s bounty.

When you talk about sightseeing options, there are monasteries, ancient temples and waterfalls, trekking trails, etc that you many explore.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali, for sightseeing? Well, If you are interested in Colonial Architecture, Shimla is the place to visit, if you want to explore old Himachal routes and scenic beauty, Manali is a much better choice.

3. Where Should Adventure Lovers Go: Shimla or Manali?

When it comes to choosing a destination for adventure, I would say you pick Manali. Although some places near Shimla do offer some adventure Sports including rock climbing, campingGolfing, Skiing, etc, Manali has many more options and better ones.

In Manali, you can go for white water rafting, paragliding, rock climbing, rappelling, camping, trekking, etc. However, whether you are in Shimla or in Manali, make sure that you choose a certified professional for your activity.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali, for adventurers, Manali definitely wins hands down. There plenty of adventure activities you can indulge in and near Manali.

4. Talking About Safety, Which One’s Safer – Shimla or Manali?

Himachal is a preferred destination among solo travellers and backpackers, because of its safety. I would say both these Himachali towns fare equally well when it comes to safety.

Having said that, I would warn against taking any misadventures or roaming alone at nights, especially in Manali because of the dangers of wild animals. So, if you just take the basic precautions, you will be fine.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali, both these Himachal towns are equally safe.

5. Is Shimla Better or Manali for Budget Travellers

That is a difficult question to answer as a lot would depend on your personal choices as a traveller. I am a backpacker and from my experience, I can say that Manali is comparatively cheaper than Shimla for backpackers.

If we talk about accommodation, in Manali you will find many backpacker hostels and guest houses when compared to Shimla. In Shimla, the budget accommodations are located far off from the main city, while in Manali, you will find the hostels right near the central location.

Another major factor that contributes to cost is internal transport. In Shimla, local buses are the cheapest way of travelling between attractions. In Manali, you have to hire a cab or a self-driven bike to move around places, which is more expensive than local buses.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali, for budget travellers, I would say Manali is a slightly cheaper option for backpackers.

6. Shimla or Manali: What’s the Better Destination For Foodies?

Food is an important part of the whole travel experience. Both Shimla and Manali have a great food culture. You will find several cafes, local eateries, restaurants, street food, etc. in both these places.

In both these places, you can not only try a number of cuisines including the local Himachali food and national and international cuisines. If you are a non-vegetarian do try the trout fish in Manali, I hear it is something not to be missed!

So, Is Shimla better or Manali for foodies, I would say both are equally good when it comes to their food culture.

7. Which has better Connectivity: Shimla or Manali?

Another major issue while travelling is connectivity or internal transport. In both places, Shimla and Manali, internal transport if fairly decent.

In Shimla, local buses are the cheapest means of travelling within the city and are easily available. You can also find taxis easily. In Manali, you cannot depend on local buses, you will have to either hike to most attractions or hire a cab or a bike to move between different places. You can also sometimes get shared cabs from one place to another.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali in terms of better internal connectivity, I would say both are fairly well connected.

8. Shimla or Manali, Based on the Duration of Stay

Both Shimla and Manali are great options if you are looking to spend some time in the mountains. However, if you have less time (2-3 days), I would suggest you choose Shimla.

If you are looking to spend a longer vacation, I would recommend Manali as the better pick. You can just relax amidst nature, go on hikes, treks or visit nearby attractions. There are many things that will keep you occupied in and near Manali.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali, if you are going for a long vacation? I would say choose Manali if you are going for a longer vacation.

9. Shimla Or Manali: Which has Better Attractions Around It?

If you wish to explore more than just one place, both these towns offer many wonderful getaways.

From Shimla, you can easily travel to places such as Chail, Kufri, Fagu, Mashobra and Naldera. All these places are good for a day trip from Shimla.

There are many places that can be explored near Manali, especially some amazing treks. These include Naggar, Jagatsukh, Bear Kund, Kothi, etc.

So, Is Shimla better or Manali when it comes to having more attractions nearby, in my opinion, both have some fantastic attractions to explore.

So, I hope my blog helped you choose between the two destinations- Shimla & Manali. However, if you have more time on your hands, I would suggest that you visit both these destinations.

Manali or Shimla: 5 facts to discover which is better?

Manali and Shimla, both are located in Himachal Pradesh ; Shimla is the queen and Manali is the Jannat of Himachal Pradesh.

Which one is better Manali or Shimla?

Manali and Shimla are tough competitors, equally stunning, accessible, and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes with magnificent mountain peaks.

Himachal Pradesh, situated in the northernmost part of India, has been a hub of global migration. Initially known as a winter resort for Indian travelers seeking snow-covered mountains, it boasts stunning landscapes during the winter season.

Whenever you plan to visit a hill station, this question will definitely hit your mind at first,

Which one is better Manali or Shimla? Traveler

Manali and Shimla have their own charm but are very similar in nature. The duo is predominantly frosting in winter and moderately warm during summer. In winter, both are covered with dense snow. Therefore, these places are known as Switzerland of India.

Shimla, also called Shimla City, derives its name from Shyamala Mata, a fearless form of the goddess Kali. As the capital and largest city of Himachal Pradesh, this captivating destination has long mesmerized visitors with its beauty. The British army was so taken by it that it became their summer retreat.

On the other hand, Manali is yet another mesmerizing travel destination. It is a resort for tourists in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh. One can call it a cherishing tourist town in the lap of Himachal Pradesh. It’s just the door of heaven to numerous adventure activities that you can engage in here. Likewise, Shimla and Manali bring a different travel experience altogether with the change in weather.

So far I am sure you have planned to visit both places at least once in your lifetime, but still thinking about which one is better and which one to visit first, Manali or Shimla?

Let’s figure out a few of the key factors which will help you decide, which one is better Manali or Shimla.

Skip to content of your interest

Accessibility to Manali and Shimla from Delhi

Accessibility to any travel destination is one of the key factors for the traveler. This includes three sub-factors, how to reach, how much time it will take, and how much it will cost.

How to reach Shimla from Delhi – Wanderers might be thinking about how to reach Shimla, I would like to give a note here. Shimla is one of the most easily accessible hill stations as a travel destination in India. There are many ways one can reach Shimla, it is very well connected to major cities of India, in fact, Delhi.

  • HPTDC and HRTC Government buses are one of my favorites, they operate every day from Delhi ISBT. It is just an overnight journey from Delhi to Shimla via Panipat, Karnal, Pipli, Ambala, and Chandigarh. It may cost around rupees 600 to 1500.
  • Another way is to take a train from New Delhi Railway Station. The journey will be in two stages Train from New Delhi Railway Station to Kalka Railway Station by train Kalka Shatabdi Special 02005 then Kalka to Shimla Railway Station by train Shimla Express Special 04543. The first cost ranges from rupees 130 to 1200 and the later cost ranges from rupees 70 to 500.
  • Earlier there was one more way to reach Shimla from Delhi, that way airway. There is a Jubbarhatti Airport almost 25 km before Shimla, which is a domestic airport connecting Shimla to Delhi. After the shutdown of Kingfisher Airlines, there are no scheduled flights to Shimla from Delhi and vice versa.
  • My other favorite is driving myself to Shimla from Delhi, which is just 350 Km from Delhi. Driving through the mountains is seriously an experience on another level altogether.

How to reach Manali from Delhi – Reaching Manali from Delhi is not as easy as Shimla, but still, there are many ways you can visit the mesmerizing landscape of Manali, the heaven of Himachal Pradesh.

  • The fastest way to reach Manali from Delhi is the flight to Kullu Manali Airport from Delhi Airport then take a taxi to Manali. It will be somewhere around 4 hour’s journey plus time to reach the airport from your residence in Delhi. This is obviously an expensive bet.
  • The cheapest way is undoubtedly the bus from ISBT Delhi. Likewise, for Shimla, Manali also HPTDC, and HRTC Government buses operate every day from ISBT Delhi. It may cost around rupees 600 to 2000.
  • Driving yourself to Manali is still an option, but it is quite a good distance from Delhi to Manali; the Distance is near about 535 Km from Delhi to Manali.

I hope this might have helped you a little bit. So after knowing the fact Shimla is easily accessible, can you answer to yourself now for the question, “Which one is better Manali or Shimla?”. Still confused let’s check out the accommodation options available in Manali and Shimla.

Accommodation in Manali and Shimla

Accommodation is another key factor for most travelers since not everyone can stay anywhere.

Where to stay in Shimla – Since it is one of the most easily accessible hill stations and of course most famed travel destination, one can find many options for staying in Shimla across the hill station. I would suggest booking your stay well in advance in peak season. It is so close to Chandigarh that as soon as the snowfall news breaks out, people from Chandigarh pack their bags and reach Shimla in a couple of hours.

Though there are plenty of options available in Shimla, my recommended stays would definitely be at heritage resorts maintained by HPTDC. The reason behind this is the fabulous location they have acquired, and these all are from the time of British people.

A few of my personal favorites are,

  • Hotel Peterhoff, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – a property near the heart of Shimla, the Mall Road.
  • Hotel Apple Blossom, Fagu, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – I love the peace around the property, and mostly covered with fog throughout the day.
  • Hotel Golf Glade, Naldera, Near Mashobara Valley, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – a beautiful location very close to the golf course.
  • Hotel Hatu, Naldera, Himachal Pradesh – Surrounded by an apple orchard, a kind of untouched place almost 65 km from Shimla mall road. I bet if you stay at this property, you’ll have to push yourself very hard to leave that place. This is so damn amazing.
  • There are plenty of 4 and 5-star hotels in Shimla.

golf glade hotel naldera - World Travel Packages

Where to stay in Manali – Just like Shimla Manali is also quite a famous destination in Himachal Pradesh, finding a stay won’t be that much difficult. Same as Shimla, HPTDC offers resorts at a premium location in Manali. You can definitely go check their website for more details.

I definitely don’t suggest people stay near Mall road, neither for Manali nor for Shimla. These places are always crowded with lots of people. If you are going to the hill station your stay must be in the hills.

Let me list down a few of the amazing properties in Manali you would definitely want to stay,

  • Span resort and spa, Manali, Himachal Pradesh
  • Shivadya Resort, Manali, Himachal Pradesh
  • Anantmaya Resrt, Manali, Himachal Pradesh
  • Apple Country Resort, Manali, Himachal Pradesh
  • Of course, there are plenty of other 4 and 5-star properties.

Since there is an endless list of accommodation options available in Manali or Shimla, answering which one is better has become even more difficult. Isn’t it? Without knowing the attractions in any travel destination it is really hard to decide which one to visit. Let’s check out the attractions offered by Manali and Shimla.

Tourist attractions in Manali and Shimla

Tourist attractions and their accessibility during your stay holds one of the major factors, that can help you decide which one is better to visit among Manali and Shimla.

Shimla – Shimla is such a crowded place and most of its attractions are close to each other. If you have planned to stay near Mall Road you can easily cover all of them in a day or two. But I don’t suggest staying near Mall Road for a long time, just staying for a day or two and trying to cover all these attractions.

If possible stay in Mashobara, Naldera, Fagu, or Narkanda for the rest of your days for a peaceful and mesmerizing holiday.

Listing few of the major attractions in Shimla that you can visit if staying near Shimla Mall Road,

  • The Mall Road, Shimla
  • The Ridge, Shimla
  • Christ Church, Shimla
  • Shri Hanuman Mandir, Jakhoo Temple, Shimla
  • Kali Bari Template, Shimla
  • Botanical Garden & Hotel Peterhoff, Shimla
  • Himachal State Museum, Shimla

In my suggestion, don’t use your personal vehicle to spot these attractions in Shimla, since Shimla is one of the most crowded hill stations and you’ll probably put yourself in trouble driving across the city.

Manali – Manali has even more to offer its tourist, but of course, they are not as close as Shimla. Deciding on which one is better Manali or Shimla is going to be a lot easier after you go through the following attractions in Manali,

  • The Mall Road, Manali – Every hill station has a mall road.
  • Hadimba Devi Temple, Manali – at walking distance from Mall Road.

Foodies get ready

Food is an important aspect when selecting a travel destination, it purely depends on your taste and what you want to eat. My way of judging which one is better Manali or Shimla? It’s where I can easily get the local food and if that is worth trying.

Shimla – One can easily find a combination of cuisines like Tibetan, Chinese, Indian, and a few international ones, but it’s really tough to find any local dishes here . You can easily find almost any chain of restaurants operating in India.

Manali – As the name suggests, Old Manali is the place where you can definitely find the local cuisines. Along with that, there are numerous entries and street food stalls around the city center.

So all you foodie’s out there, I believe it’s easy for you now to answer Which one is better Manali or Shimla?

The Verdict – Which one is better Manali Or Shimla?

Our voting has clearly identified the winner of this tough competition between Manali and Shimla. Manali wins this race by 2 points, in fact, it will be 3 points; I haven’t accounted for the crowd that you have to face in Shimla.

Recommending, if you are reaching Shimla by private vehicle, park it at hotel and visit attractions by foot or hire a cab. Expect hawkers and noise across the city, it is so crowded.

Manali is definitely a better choice for someone who enjoys adventures. Manali can be visited in summer as well as winter, you can find adventure activities across the year. Summers are moderately warm so you can escape the heat of summer in Delhi of course.

Hope you enjoyed it and helps you decide which one is better Manali or Shimla for your next trip. :)

Connectivity in travel is immensely important to make a vacation joyous. Shimla is well-connected with other different places through local buses and other transports. Transports are fairly decent for travelers and within their budget.

Manali is more virgin than Shimla, with its dense forests, lush greenery, gardens, and rivers. Public transports are not dependable there, but you can depend on trekking or need to hire a cab to visit unique tourist attractions there in Manali.

Considering the mentioned factors, the topic, Shimla vs Manali concludes that although both cities offer so many things and adventures to travelers, Manali is preferable for tourists for its extensive budget choices and attractions. best places to visit shimla or manali

Which is better Manali or Shimla?

Shimla Weather in December

There are always two destinations in Himachal Pradesh one is Shimla and the other Manali, and we have not been to either of these places.

Both destinations have also their beauty but are very similar in their ways. I am only able to go to one of the places, so we would like to know from members what they think Shimla or Manali which is better?

Deciding on which hill station to visit is mainly quite nerve-wracking. So, both hill stations, Shimla and Manali, are beautiful destinations and a must-visit even just once in your lifetime. However, we don’t always have all the time in the world and as such, there’s always this question that comes up, ‘ Which hill station is the best for me to visit? ‘

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, was once mainly a British summer residence. Its beauty captured the attention of even the British soldiers so there’s no doubt that Shimla is quite mesmerizing. Then you have Manali, yet another captivating destination. It’s a haven for adventure seekers with the plethora of activities that you can do here. Just like Shimla, the different seasons mainly provide a different experience for travelers visiting Manali. so, now, let us highlight the main differences between these two hill stations:

  • Accessibility
  • Shimla – This hill station is mainly well-connected to some of the main cities in the country. So, in fact, from Delhi, there are direct buses plying to Shimla and vice versa. There are also private buses and even government-operated buses (HPTDC & HRTC) which depart either from AnandVihar or ISBT in Delhi.
  • Manali – To reach Manali, you also have many options. So, by far, the easiest mode would be by bus as the hill station has direct connectivity with Delhi.
  • Accommodations
  • Shimla – Since Shimla is mainly a famed tourist destination, there are plenty of accommodation options in the hill station. So, always make sure that you book well in advance especially if you’re visiting during peak tourist season (summer and winter) or else you’d have to settle for a hotel mainly with a high tariff that doesn’t fit your standards.
  • Manali – Just like Shimla, Manali won’t always disappoint when it comes to accommodation options. If you are looking for budget hotels, luxury hotels, guest houses, and homestays, you name it, Manali has it.
  • Shimla – Most of the main attractions of Shimla are mainly located close to each other. The major attractions here are also the temples like the achoo  Temple , Tara Devi Temple, and Kali Bari Temple . So, for historical attractions, there’s the Kuthar Fort , Annandale,  and the Viceregal Lodge .
  • Manali – In the city center of Manali, you can also visit attractions like the Hadimba Temple and the Vashisht Temple . So, venture a bit further from the city center and you’ll find other religious attractions like the BasheshwarMahadev Temple and the BijliMahadev Temple .

So, there you go, it’s up to you to decide now that we’ve given you an overview of the hill stations. The verdict is that Shimla is mainly a more crowded destination but all its attractions are quite close to the city center.

On the other hand, Manali is mainly more for adventure seekers and best visited during winter season. So, if you’re someone who enjoys adventure sports, Manali is a good choice. But you would always need to bring your own vehicle for convenience as the attractions here are far from each other. Or you can also hire a taxi in Manali itself but that can be quite expensive.

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary – How to Plan Your Journey

shimla manali trip itinerary

Continuing from the previous two articles where I talked about how you can plan a trip to Shimla and Manali separately; in this article, I will talk about a Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary covering both the places in the same trip. I will first draft an itinerary that I recommend, followed by a few other variations. If you wanted to draft your own plan and had questions, you may ask them in the comments section towards the end of this page.

Together, Shimla and Manali are probably the most visited towns in all of Himachal and make up for a perfect family holiday. There are several reasons behind this, like safety and connectivity. But the biggest reason in my opinion is that Shimla and Manali have something to offer for everyone.

It does not matter if you are planning a quick outing with your friends or a proper vacation with your family; you know that heading towards either of these places will not end in disappointment. How can you plan your itinerary for Shimla and Manali is what I will be discussing in this article.

If you have about 7 to 8 days, you can easily explore both Shimla and Manali in a relaxed manner without rushing on any day. For the sake of this article, I will assume that you are traveling from Delhi. If you were however traveling from a different place, only the plan for first and last day will change. The rest of the itinerary will still remain the same.

Quick Navigation

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary

I will suggest an itinerary according to 9 days of travel which will include two weekends and one entire week. It will be starting on a Saturday and ending on Sunday of the next week. If you were short on time then you can easily take days out from this itinerary.

  • Delhi to Shimla: Day 1
  • Sightseeing in Shimla: Day 2
  • Sightseeing in Shimla: Day 3
  • Shimla to Manali: Day 4
  • Manali: Day 5
  • Manali to Keylong: Day 6
  • Keylong to Manali: Day 7
  • Manali: Day 8
  • Manali to Delhi: Day 9

A more detailed explanation of this itinerary is as mentioned below where I have explained what all places you can cover during your stay in Shimla and Manali.

I have kept only 2 days of stay in Shimla because, in my opinion, that is sufficient to cover the major tourist attractions here. Manali has slightly more to offer to tourists than Shimla does.

The plan above can be completed by both a private vehicle and public transport. Traveling by your own vehicle of course will be better and more convenient.

shimla manali trip itinerary

  • Delhi to Shimla – Day 1

Not much to talk about on this day except for a long journey. From Delhi, take NH1 and then take the road towards Shimla from Chandigarh via Himalayan Expressway. There is currently some road widening work going on between Chandigarh and Shimla so the entire journey can easily take up to 10-11 hours.

The total distance covered would be about 350 kilometers. There are regular HRTC buses from ISBT Delhi which you can board if you were traveling by public transport.

Another fun thing to do would be to reach Kalka by Bus and then board the famous Toy train to reach Shimla. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip by Shimla Kala Toy Train .

Shimla – Day 2

Now there are multiple ways that you can spend Day 2 and 3. There are several places to see in Shimla of which,  Mall Road, Christ Church, Scandal Point, Jakhu Hill, Shimla State Museum are the most famous ones. Some of the nearby hill stations that are very scenic are Chail , Kufri, Mashobra , and Narkanda . For a complete list, please take a look at Places of Tourist Interest in Shimla .

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, I would recommend spending Day 2 in Shimla itself.  You can take a walk on The Ridge, the area near Jhaku Hill, and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

You can also trek to Jhaku Hill, which at a height of 2,455 meters. It offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain. There is also a 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman at top of Jhaku Hill.

shimla manali trip itinerary

Drive to Narkanda – Day 3

On Day 3, take a drive to the nearby town of Narkanda via Kufri. At Narkanda, drive all the way till Sutlej point and then have lunch there. After lunch, pay a short visit to Hatu Peak and then return to Shimla by evening. This entire drive is very scenic and definitely worth it. For more details, please take a look at What to See in Narkanda .

If you were traveling by public transport, my advice would be to spend these two days visiting places within Shimla city itself. Going to Narkanda by public transport and coming back to Shimla may be a bit of a hassle and to be honest, won’t be that much fun either.

Shimla to Manali – Day 4

Most of this day will be spent traveling from Manali to Shimla. You can take the route via Tattapani. The drive can be a bit long but is a scenic one and you will enjoy it.

Manali – Day 5

Spend this day in Manali itself. The first important thing you need to do is to get your permit for Rohtang Pass. This can take an entire day where you will first submit your documents in the first half of the day. You will then return to the DC office to collect the permit in the afternoon.

Another and easier way around this is to apply for the permit online. Please read How to get a Permit for Rohtang Pass for step by step details.

Apart from getting the permits, the rest of the day will be spent on local sightseeing and walking around in Manali. There are several places you can visit of which Hadimba Temple, Nehru Kund, Vashist Hot Water Springs, Museum Of Himachal Culture And Folk Art, Manu Maharishi Temple, Gauri Shankar Temple, Jagatipatt Temple, Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery are to name a few. For more details, please take a look at Places of Tourist Interest in Manali .

mall road manali

Manali to Keylong – Day 6

Today you will take the most scenic drive of your entire journey. Drive up to Rohtang Pass and then descend down on the other side into Lahaul valley. There are plenty of hotels in Keylong where you can spend the night. Or you can drive further 25 kilometers to Jispa and stay there at any of the campsites.

This part of the journey is highly recommended. People advising you for Manali will not add this to the itinerary but this actually is a must part of your trip. You will love the entire drive from Manali to Lahaul valley .

Keylong to Manali – Day 7

On this day, start early from Keylong and reach Jispa. Have breakfast there and from Jispa, climb up to see Baralacha La top , and drive all the way till Suraj Taal. From there, then backtrack to Jispa and Keylong and then return to Manali via Rohtang Pass.

Manali – Day 8

Last day of the trip before you return home to Delhi. There are 3 ways that you can spend this day. Either you can just relax in Manali and shop around a bit at Mall road. Or you can trek to Bhrigu Lake which a 6 kilometers hike from Gulaba. You can also plan a day visit to Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib.

An alternate way to plan this day is to go to Kasol in Parvati Valley and spend the day there.

Manali to Delhi – Day 9

Nothing to write about this day except that it will be a long journey home to Delhi via Chandigarh. Total distance covered will be about 550 kilometers so an early start from Manali is recommended.

Itinerary for Shimla and Manali

A few other ways that the journey can be planned are as mentioned below.

Itinerary 1

  • Shimla Local Sightseeing and Kufri – Day 2
  • Shimla to Manikaran to Manali – Day 3
  • Rohtang Pass – Day 4
  • Local Sightseeing in Manali – Day 5
  • Manali to Kullu to Delhi – Day 6

Itinerary 2

  • Local Sightseeing in Shimla – Day 2
  • Shimla to Narkana to Sarahan – Day 3
  • Sarahan to Kalpa – Day 4
  • Kalpa to Chitkul – Day 5
  • Chitkul to Shimla – Day 6
  • Shimla to Manali – Day 7
  • Manali Local Sightseeing – Day 8
  • Rohtang Pass – Day 9
  • Manali to Delhi – Day 10

Accommodation in Shimla and Manali

Shimla and Manali are very popular tourist destinations and always have people visiting here. Due to this, hotels in both these cities are ample in number in quite a wide range of budgets. You will easily be able to find cheap stays as well as luxurious hotels and resorts.

I personally do not prefer booking hotels in advance as I like to first arrive, check the place out and then negotiate an on the spot deal. It is however more of a personal choice. In peak tourist season, it is definitely an added benefit and peace of mind if you have your accommodation booked and confirmed.

Winter Trip to Shimla and Manali

If you were visiting Shimla and Manali in winter, you can still follow this itinerary with an exception of Lahaul valley. That part cannot be explored as Rohtang pass remains closed between November and April. In that case, you can use these two days to explore more areas like Manikaran Sahib or nearby places like Parvati Valley .

In peak winters, it can snow heavily at both Shimla and Manali in which case, I will recommend that you be careful while driving around. If possible, hire a local taxi here who can take you for sightseeing safely.

You will also have to be careful while packing clothes. Pack a few pairs of thermals and pack all your heavy woolens. Do keep in mind though that there is a huge tourist rush here around Christmas and new year.

Road Conditions in Shimla and Manali

The road between Delhi to Shimla and Manali to Delhi is a mix of good and average. There are some bad sections in between but it is mostly a smooth run.

So is the road at most of the other places with an exception of the stretch at Rohtang Pass. The road towards the top of the pass and then at some places towards Lahaul valley can get a little bad. In monsoon, there is also a lot of slushes here and if it rained too much it can also cause landslides in between.

Another bad section of the road is towards Manikaran Sahib. Between Shimla and Manali, the road via Tattapani is about average, a mix of good and bad. The annoying part of the journey will however be the long line of trucks traveling between Mandi and Chandigarh.

Clothes for Shimla and Manali

For a summer visit, your regular cotton clothes will do but you may want to pack a jacket as well if you kept Lahaul valley as part of your itinerary. During monsoon season, make sure you are carrying proper rain gear along with your cottons. For winter trips, your heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, and jackets are a must.

Shimla and Manali Trip

Final question is, why to visit Shimla and Manali at all. There are numerous other hill stations in Himachal and Uttarakhand that you can go to so why these two places? The answer to this question is actually in the form of three major reasons.

The first one is that both these places are very well connected to all nearby cities. Road connectivity remains open throughout the year and you can either drive on your own or catch an overnight bus.

The second reason is in terms of safety. When you are out vacationing with family, you cannot really afford to go completely remote; places where no one goes. You would rather visit destinations that are filled with tourists so you can have fun as well as peace of mind. Shimla and Manali both are perfect destinations in this aspect.

The third reason is of availability of facilities like accommodation, phone reception, data connectivity; public transport, taxis, eateries, etc, and both these places again come out as winners here as well.

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary – Conclusion

I hope the information above was of help. If you have any other questions; or need any further details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community forum ; and I will be glad to answer. If you have visited Shimla and Manali and have a few other tips that can be added to the article above, please be so kind to mention it in comments and I will add to the post.

First, let us discuss the 5 best places to visit in Shimla and Manali

1. kufri, shimla (which is better shimla or manali).

Which is better Shimla or Manali

Kufri, nestled in the Himalayas, is one of the most beautiful spots to visit in Himachal. The small town’s lofty valleys are delightfully green in the summer and ethereally snowy in the winter, providing some of the most magnificent views. The valley also has a diverse range of native flora and wildlife, such as dense forests of pines and deodars, which add to the natural beauty of the area.

Kufri, unlike other villages in the upper highlands, is reasonably developed and offers a variety of sports and adventure options for visitors. The Himalayan National Park in Kufri, which has a significant rich endemic biodiversity, is a delight for both wildlife aficionados and trekkers.

2. Summer Hills (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

Shimla is a lovely town with plenty to do and see. However, only a few locations provide uninterrupted Panoramic views that do credit to the bizarre magnificence of this Himalayan hill region. Summer Hills is one such location, which is why it ranks at the top of this list of Places to Visit in Shimla.

The observation places allow you to capture the Himalayan landscape in its most natural state. The hills are covered in verdant meadows, and you may spend an entire day here with your family and enjoy a lovely picnic meal. Summer Hills is also one of the seven hills that make up Shimla.

3. Kalka-Shimla Railway (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

For good reason, the  Kalka-Shimla  toy train excursion is a highlight of Shimla tourism. This narrow-gauge railway, built in 1898, was recently added to UNESCO’s list of mountain railways in India. The train ride from the Shivalik Range foothills at Kalka to Shimla gives amazing views of the surrounding hills and villages as it winds through the exceedingly picturesque and rugged terrain.

It stops at a variety of tourist spots along the road, including Solan, Dharampur, Summer Hill, Salogra, Taradevi, and Barog, among others. The route will take you over 864 bridges, 919 turns, and 102 tunnels. The Shimla toy train trip may not be considered a ‘destination’ to visit in the region.

4. The Ridge (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

In terms of geography and tourism attractions, The Ridge may be considered Shimla’s heart. This Shimla tourist attraction is actually a wide-open boulevard that extends from east to west along the Mall Road and links to the famed Scandal Point. Its popularity stems from the breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountain ranges that stand against the azure sky to border this tropical paradise.

The area is densely packed with long-established British establishments that entice visitors to indulge in feel-good shopping and binge-eating. The Ridge, which is lined with boutiques, bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops, acts as the region’s social core. Remember that this location is one of the most photographed.

5. Mall Road, Shimla (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

Vehicles, save emergency vehicles, are not permitted on this roadway, making Shimla’s Mall Road a great spot to stroll around in the evenings without worrying about traffic. Shimla Mall Road is well-known for its cafés and the exquisite delicacies that they serve, in addition to shopping. People here are literally spoiled for options. There’s also the Gaiety Theatre, where the song ‘Main nikla, gaddi lekar’ from the Indian film “Gadar” was filmed. The location is small but lovely.

The Ridge is where people go horseback riding, get their pictures taken in Himachali dress, and simply relax. According to legend, the Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy. This has resulted in the Maharaja being banished from entering Shimla by the British authorities.

1. Solang Valley (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

This lovely Solang valley is also known as the ‘Solang Nala,’ which is a mix of the names Solang and Nullah. The words ‘Solang’ and ‘Nullah’ imply “nearby village” and “water stream,” respectively. This ski resort is recognized for being surrounded by stunning and strange slopes.

With the passage of time, the valley has gained recognition as a ski paradise of North India, and there are numerous ski agencies offering various courses to learn to ski. While Solang Valley can be explored and experienced in a single day, two days and one night is the best length of stay. With this amount of time, you may easily partake in all of the activities, relax under the stars, and then travel to adjacent locations.

2. Rohtang Pass (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Rohtang Pass Manali Permit Open Date Temperature

The 50-kilometer trek from Manali to Rohtang Pass is one of nature’s most magnificent displays. The Rohtang Pass’s spellbinding adventures and strategic location make it one of the most popular destinations to visit in Manali. This picturesque pass once served as a trading route connecting people living on either side of the Pir Panjal Range.

It is now one of the crowning jewels of Manali tourism, drawing visitors from all over the world. The Rohtang Pass is well-known among Ladakh visitors, but the unpredictable avalanche and harsh climate conditions make it dangerous at times.

3. Beas River (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

The Beas River , which rushes swiftly through Manali, offers numerous chances for outdoor enjoyment in its waters and along its banks. However, because to the quick flow of the river, even the most experienced rafter can find it risky, especially after the snow melts in the spring and the water levels rise.

As a result, tourists are advised to avoid the river from March to April. Zip-lining (flying fox) across the Beas River and rafting down it are popular activities for visitors who wish to be more active. River rafting is popular in the Kullu Valley, particularly over a 15-kilometer section of Grade II and III rapids from Pirdi (near Kullu town) to Jhiri.

4. Old Manali (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

Nestled amongst basic, traditional-style houses, Old Manali is a comparatively tranquil area situated within the hustle and bustle of Manali town. The road in Old Manali, a relaxed tourist destination, is dotted with guesthouses, cafes, and tiny shops—perfect for lounging and people-watching.

The steep but beautiful climb to get the vistas is well worth it. Authentic and traditional experiences are better found in Old Manali than in the highly commercialized New Manali. Old Manali’s alleyways are dotted with charming cafes, alternative markets, and small businesses that provide an insight into the way of life and culture of the region. Apple orchards, picturesque locations, and wooded mountain trails are the main draws of Old Manali, a quaint and relaxed neighborhood.

5. Manali Nature Park (Which is better Shimla or Manali)

Which is better Shimla or Manali

A stroll through Manali Nature Park’s dense cedar trees is highly recommended if you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors. Manali Nature Park is located between Manali town and Old Manali, and it borders the Beas River. Manali Nature Park feels wonderful and mystical because of the thick canopy of towering trees that acts as a barrier between the park and the outer world.

After you’ve finished hiking through Manali Nature Park, there’s another similar park, Van Vihar Park, with the entry next to Manali town, if you wish to continue exploring the natural beauty of the area.

F&Q (SHIMLA VS MANALI)

When comparing Manali and Shimla, Shimla is more populated than Manali.

Manali is a breathtaking hill town in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu Valley. It is surrounded by the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar mountain ranges and is at 2050 metres above sea level. Shimla, the state capital of Himachal Pradesh, lies 2206 metres above sea level. It is located in the northwest Himalayas and is known for its colonial architecture and gorgeous surroundings.

Temperatures in Manali range from 10°C to 25°C in the summer and 0° to 15°C in the winter. Due to its subtropical highland environment, Shimla suffers frigid winters and scorching summers. Shimla’s temperature ranges from -4°C to 8°C in the winter and from 15°C to 30°C in the summer.

Manali is best visited between March and June, when the weather is pleasant and the temperature is mild. It is not recommended to visit during the monsoon season, which runs from July to September. The town receives a lot of rain, which can cause landslides and road closures.

Because of the pleasant weather and warm temperatures, the months of March through June and September through December are ideal for a visit to Shimla. The winter months of December through February are often suggested, as the village receives snowfall and is extremely lovely.

In the end, the choice between the two depends on your personal preferences and the kind of trip you’re looking for. If you enjoy outdoor activities and stunning scenery, Manali might be a better option for you; on the other hand, Shimla might be a better fit if you’re more interested in colonial history and cultural attractions.

All cities, however, offer visitors a unique experience and are equally worth visiting. I hope this essay has helped you make the comparison so you can choose between Manali and Shimla for your upcoming trip.

At the end it my opinion for you to go for Manali. But Shimla is also a very adventurous city to explore but in comparison Manali is more enough than Shimla. It’s your choice where you wanna go you may i just here for to share any bad things or any bad suggestions to you that’s it. A Shimla to Manali road trip is one of the most picturesque ones that we have taken in our life. The distance between Shimla and Manali is about 250 kms. And, theShimla to Manali road trip winds through the mighly Himalayas. So, it takes 7-8 hours to reach Manali from Shimla covering this distance. Which including stops for breakfast and lunch. However, every bit of theShimla to Manali road trip is very scenic and beautiful, with the majestic mountains on one side and the lush green , deep valley at the other side of the road. But, one should start as early in the morning as possible. So that one can spend more time on the way to Manali and still reach there before dark.

Shimla Manali highway

Our Shimla Manali drive

I have been lucky enough to already been on Shimla to Manali road trip twice. The first time was long back with my parents. When I was a kid. But the memories are still quiet vivid. So, this time around, there was no question or confusion on a Shimla to Manali road trip. I knew we were going to take theShimla to Manali road trip and drive during the day. So that we could enjoy it thoroughly. I also planned to start early so that we could have ample time with our kid to cover the distance without any haste.

PS: We booked Shimla to Manali cab. In fact the cab was with us all through our Shimla Manali Trip . But, one can also do the Shimla to Manali road trip by booking a Shimla to Manali Bus. While Kalka-Shimla toy train provides for an ejoyable journey to Shimla via train, unfortunately there is no train connectivity to Manali.

Early morning start for Shimla Manali highway

We woke up early in the morning. And, we decided to skip breakfast at our homestay in Shimla in lieu of time. However, the homestay owner knew of our plans. Thus, he had arranged for an early morning breakfast, ensuring his guests don’t leave without having food. Soon, we packed our bags, and got ready to leave.

Out of Shimla, on the highway

Since we started very early. Therefore, we left Shimla and hit the Shimla Manali highway in no time. After traveling 78 KM you reach Beri junction, before Bilaspur. At this junction the roads from Chandigarh, Delhi and Kalka side join the Shimla Manali road. We stopped here for a while since our little one needed little rest. We parked our cars on the road side and stepped out. Fresh air and lush green mountains and valleys greeted us. We all strolled a little here and there on the road side before continuing further.

From here, after sometime, we hit Sundarnagar. There is a dam here. 25km from here comes Mandi. It all gets better at this point, ~145km from Shimla. The road starts running besides river Beas and then continues hand-in-hand with the river for the rest of the journey all the way till Manali. The torquish water and gush of the river amidst the trees and the smooth rocks on the river bed produce a scene beautiful enough to inspire any artist and excite any traveller :). It provides perfect photographic backdrop for snaps, all through the way.

Once the drive along the river bank starts, the whole route is dotted with eateries. We stopped at a local dhaba (Indian Eatery) and had hot chapatis and delicious Indian curries sitting along the bank of the river. There are not many fancy restaurants, but these small roadside dhabas are a must try for the taste of authentic North Indian food. One must stop for lunch at one of these roadside dhabas en-route to Manali.

Shimla Manali road

Around 50km before Manali comes the town of Kullu. Here, there’s a beautiful bridge across the river which leads to the town, it looks like a painting done by the almighty himself. The highway runs on one side of the bridge, while on the other side, the beautiful small houses all along the opposite bank of the river present a scene that looks just out of the fairy tale. As the road starts approaching Kullu, one can start seeing many small hotels and camps alongside the river. In fact, this is a perfect location for camping in Manali . The camps are also organised by hotels and resorts. present a nice option to stay besides the river and enjoy the scenery. Many of them also arrange for river rafting, fishing, trying kayaks and other adventure and sports activities. There are numerous river side hotels as well lining the bank.

From Kullu to Manali the river flows almost at the same level as the road, just besides it. On one side there are the hills and farms and on the other side the riverbed and the beautiful stream flowing till the town of Manali. Almost 10-15km before reaching Manali, the road passes through the nearby villages, with green fields on either side of the road and a few village houses popping up now and then.

Shimla Manali road

Kullu government Emporium

This drive for us was more like a leisurely walk. We stopped at lots of places, for tea, coffee, lunch and at times simply to take a few moments and appreciate the natural beauty in front of us. In the town of Kullu there is a Government garment store right on the highway, which houses some fine woolen shawls, carpets, sweaters, pullovers, caps and other garments made by the locals. The ground floor has the spinning and manufacturing machines and first floor has the shop. And, it is right besides the highway. We stopped here for some nice half an hour and did pick some sovereigns and some shawls.

At snow peak retreat Manali

Finally from here, we headed straight to Manali. Once in Manali town, we asked the directions for our resort snow peak retreat and we headed staight to the resort. As we arrived at the resort, it was almost sunset time. The resort is located just near the Hidimba Devi Temple . The final stretch of a few hundred meters to the resort were narrow and steep. However, it was all worth it because of the scene that we were greeted with as soon as we reached the resort. Just in front of the resort, the mountain peaks were covered with snow and the whole scene was very beautiful.

Overall, it was a drive of almost 9 hours for us, but we didn’t feel a bit tired when we reached our destination, Snow Peak Retreat, Manali . When we were driving along the bank of the river, almost at the same level with the river bed, it felt so awesome, we wished the journey would never come to an end :). The Shimla Manali highway condition is very good. And you can easily do the trip via a cab or a bus. You can self drive as well, if you are confident enough to drive for long hours on the winding Himalayan route.

Note : The Shimla to Manali road remains open throughout the year and serves as main connection to Manali town from different parts of India. It is not affected by the snowfall in winter. In fact, it becomes all the more scenic at this point of the year. And we must say, although we have taken many other beautiful highway drives and road trips in India , including the Cochin to Munnar road trip , and the Bangalore to Kodaikanal road trip  but this one remains as our favorite so far.

Tips for your journey on this road

  • Start as early from Shimla as possible so that you get a lead on the way and don’t get stuck on the mountain road post dark.
  • You can have breakfast in your hotel or on the way.
  • There are numerous food outlets on the way, and the roadside one have very delicious north Indian cuisines.
  • But, carry drinking water with you in case you need it all of a sudden
  • Wear enough woolen, the temperature will be mostly low
  • Make space for ample breaks during the Shimla to Manali road trip. Since the journey is long, you will not feel tired if you take it slow and take breaks in between
  • The route has directions at all the major turnings, so there won’t be any problem. GPS also works all through the route.
  • If you are driving on your own, better two or three people split the driving between them as the route is long.
  • The road is open all through the year, so you can plan the journey anytime.
  • In extreme winter months, it snows in Manali . Do check the weather predictions to avoid getting stuck on the way near Kullu or Manali

Hi! I know this is kinda off topic nevertheless I’d figured I’d ask.

Would you be interested in exchanging links or maybe guest authoring a blog post or vice-versa? My site addresses a lot of the same topics as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other.

If you might be interested feel free to shoot me an email. I look forward to hearing from you! Excellent blog by the way!

HI, Can u suggest me budget accomodation at shimla and manali for family and taxi operator number which u people had experiance. u can suggest the area to book accomodation at both places. Even Home stay also welcome. What about traveling Manali from shimla in night time or better day time?

We have information on different accommodations in Shimla in this post – https://revolvingcompass.com/14-stay-recommendations-shimla/ . We stayed here – https://revolvingcompass.com/little-chilli-shimla/ in shimla and here – https://revolvingcompass.com/delighful-stay-hotel-snow-peak-retreat-manali/ in manali. The rates must have changed since our trip almost 7 years back. But these were both mid-budget accommodations. I would not prefer night travel between Shimla and Manali as its hilly terrain with no light provisions. And its beautiful, so day trip is enjoyable. This is one post on our road trip from Shimla to Manali – https://revolvingcompass.com/shimla-manali-one-scenic-road-trips-india/

Nice post! Got a good insight. Would you happen to know if the road from Kullu to Shimla is one way or two way and the general amount of traffic on this route?

We will be traveling from Bhuntar to Mashobra and from Mashobra to Manali. I note from your article that you suggest one leaves early in the morning. However, on the onward journey to Mashobra from Bhuntar we will not be able to start our journey before 11 am and the return journey from Mashobra to Manali before 2 pm. Would be great if you could highlight any issues that you feel we might encounter with this schedule and any tips that we should keep in mind on our journey. It may be noted that we will not be driving ourselves and both sides the journey will be in a local taxi.

Hi Ashwin. The distance in kilometers is not much from Shimla to Manali. And the Kullu Shima road is a 2 way road, however , kullu to Manali is narrower. Traffic is also not much on this route in border seasons. But, as it is hilly terrain with several sharp bends and turns and you won’t have the usual roadside lamps or street lights to guide you beyond dark, it will be a dangerous ride, even if a local driver is driving. That’s why it is preferable to aim to reach Manali before dark. Also, again, pertaining to the altitude and the cold and cloudy climate, it will get dark as early as 5pm in winter months and max by 6pm otherwise. So, I will still suggest, start early, or stay somewhere midway and continue your journey to Manali the next day. Have a wonderful trip!

Very good blog. Keep it up!!!

we are travelling to Shimla/Manali in Dec this year. Need to know what are the places we can visit enroute Manali from Shimla considering we leave Shimla as early as possible in the morning..

Can we cover Naggar castle or Manikaran? We will be travelling back from Manali to Chandigarh after stay of 3 nights in Manali so want to cover few places enroute Manali from Shimla and few enroute Chandigarh from Manali.

Also want to know about the river rafting. we have do it while going to Manali or enroute Chandigarh?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Mahesh. There are two routes to Manali from Shimla. One of them has Naggar Castle on the way and if you decide to take that route, you can stop there. There is a restaurant also inside the castle campus it seems. However, start really early, like by 6:00am in the morning. Also, both rafting and Naggar Castle you wont be able to cover en route to Manali as both will consume time. So, you can do Rafting on the day you return from Manali, or, while you are in Manali. The river is right there and you can go down specifically for Rafting on one of the days, that way it won’t be very hectic.

Very good blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!post34416

You could definitely start with a free platform and sharpen your writing skills. If you feel you are ready to get into paid platform, we have an article on how to set that up
