10 Best Tours in Amsterdam

By Clodagh Kinsella

Amsterdam Photo Safari Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Knowing where to direct your steps in Amsterdam is far more complicated than just keeping an eye out for the constant onslaught of bikes: between the major museum renovations, the cutting-edge architectural innovation, and the chameleonic food scene, the city is enjoying a renaissance akin to its Golden Age glory days. While there are brilliant specialist operators running tours of the highlights—whether of food, art, or local photo opportunities—others, lingering longer in the memory, focus on the shadowy flipside to that 17th-century luminosity, from Amsterdam’s colonial past to its misprized sex industry. We've rounded up our favorites—be it an Amsterdam canal cruise, Amsterdam bike tour, Amsterdam walking tour, or one of the many highlighting the city's cultural offerings—including one standout through the Red Light District, to lead you in the right direction. No matter which one you choose, one thing remains: take to two wheels or the water if you really want to go Dutch.

Jordaan District Food Walking Tour Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Eating Amsterdam, Jordaan Food Tour Arrow

The Amsterdam spin-off of ace tour company Eating Europe—in six cities and counting—this isn’t a makeshift affair, and you’ll get well-produced local food maps as part of the package (but make sure to reserve ahead). The focus is very much on insider knowledge, with four-hour guided walking tours of the Jordaan district’s lesser-known corners, including a dozen stops for Dutch delicacies, and ample meet-and-greets with artisanal food heroes. Your companions: two historians, two professional chefs, and an architect—plus a local whose family have lived in Jordaan for generations, and an Indonesian/Dutch guide for explaining the former colony’s worthy contribution to the food scene. The vibe is fun and interactive, and the main course comes with an appealing slice of history on the side.

Black Heritage Tour Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Black Heritage Tour of Amsterdam Arrow

Black Heritage Tours founder Jennifer Tosch is on a one-woman mission to shed light on the presence, and little told past, of the African diaspora in the Netherlands (she’s now added tours in NYC and, by request, Brussels). Rigorous, interactive three-hour boat trips are the big draw, luring two to 90 people via celebrities like activist and author Angela Davis (average group size is 10-20 guests). Eye-opening is the word here. Once you’ve been alerted to the hidden past of Amsterdam’s beautiful Golden Age museums and canal houses, you’ll start seeing signs of the city’s sinful colonial legacy everywhere. A visit to the Rijksmuseum (usually included) or Royal Palace won’t be the same again. Definitely book ahead—especially outside of summer, when trips are less frequent.

Mokumboot Boat Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

MokumBoot Arrow

There are a million Amsterdam canal cruises, and a million other tourists to take them. Sidestepping that, and exercising your navigational skills for two hours (or more, if you like) is a bit of a no-brainer. With a 50-strong fleet of slick monochrome electric motor boats, and six hire stations across town, this is the king of skipper-yourself boat rentals, but with the laid back attitude of a playboy prince. Not that they aren’t organized: Mokum (an old nickname for Amsterdam) take care of pillows (or ponchos and blankets, depending), suggested sailing routes, and instructions on how the boats work. Affable dock personnel go beyond, so you’ll get a super-clear brief on how to operate the boat, but if you want to escape the traffic or visit a particular spot, they’ll happily tailor your itinerary to that. For sunny weekends, reserve at least two days ahead to get the prime early-afternoon slots.

Architour covering Ijburg and Golden Age home tours Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Architour Half Day Tours: IJburg & Golden Age Walk Arrow

As the market-leader for architectural tours in Holland, the brilliantly organized Architour can handle groups ranging from two to 240—whether town planning offices, Rotary Clubs, or architecture students. Their regular two-hour-long small group tours, for ten people max, and private tours, for up to 20 people, need advance booking. The two tours listed here are both on foot, though they also offer bike and canal tours. Directors Paul Vlok and Anneke Bokern (an architect and architecture journalist, respectively) have handpicked a dozen local architects to serve alongside them as guides. Fluent in Dutch and English (and some even German, French, and Japanese), all have personal insight into Dutch building culture, and how that stacks up against other countries, so no question is too specific.

WeBike Amsterdam City Tour Arrow

Cycling is part of the Dutch DNA, and there are over 880,000 bikes in Amsterdam alone—though three-hour tours by this excellent indie outfit generally top out at around seven cyclists. Between the rave reviews online and the intimate numbers, it’s definitely best to reserve your slot in advance. Like many Dutch kids, mainstays Thijs and Jasper grew up on the back of a bike, and know how to combine humor with brilliant historical and architectural titbits. You’re not just following the leader here, but engaging in regular chat as you cruise from one fascinating spot to the next. If you want to bring babies or small kids, they’ve got the (well-maintained, comfortable) bike for that. In fact, there’s really no limit to the crowd you’ll be riding with, but safe to say that it’s not the same set that comes to Amsterdam for the weed and red lights, and people who never learned to bike really shouldn’t start here.

Context Travel Dutch Masters of the Rijksmuseum Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Context Travel's Rijksmuseum Tour: Crash Course Arrow

This is a formidable operation established and executed by tour experts, and you’ll only need to share the joy with five other equally sophisticated tourists. The Rijksmuseum docents are all art historians, ranging from Vermeer experts to TV personalities—so you can be staring at a Rembrandt in the company of an acclaimed author on the subject. Despite all this they don’t talk down to tour members, and many manage to be funny as well as brilliant (sigh). Itineraries are docent-dependent (and group-dependent), so it’s worth doing your research if you’re set on getting that Rembrandt expert, but in any case the master’s works will be par for the course—not least his masterpiece The Night Watch , enjoying pride of place at the heart of the museum. More obscure rooms are also on the agenda, and having a guide to navigate them may leave you with a lasting love of 17th century ceramics, furniture, or model ships.

PIC's Wallen Tour Arrow

Walking tours of Amsterdam’s Red Light District aren’t hard to find, but no other operator tells the story of the notorious neighborhood from the perspective of sex workers. Run by invaluable non-profit the Prostitution Information Center (PIC), walks aim to encourage an open debate about the misunderstood industry and increase respect for sex workers (the term preferred by prostitutes). Turn up to PIC’s community center, café, and exhibition space a few minutes before the tour—or come earlier to consult the sex library over coffee and cake. Guides are either ex-sex workers, ready to open up about their own stories, or researchers on the industry who are able to answer literally any query from how much money you can make in a shift to the ancient origins of the trade. Given PIC’s mission to change hearts and minds, there’s absolutely nothing rote about the delivery here—this is a real passion project for guides, and you might find yourself shedding a tear.

Amsterdam Photo Safari Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Amsterdam Photo Safari Arrow

This is really best for those with a vested interest, as the one-on-one attention is brilliant for making swift progress, and if you opt for a longer tour (they run from three to six hours, with four a recommended minimum) you’ll really be able to get off the beaten track. Your safari group might range from total amateurs getting to grips with the basics of composition to pros with pricy DSLRs looking for the inside scoop on the best places to shoot in the city. You can bring a friend with an iPhone or other handheld camera device for around 90 percent less than the regular tour price, so it might end up feeling like a private tour (those are available too, and are strongly recommended for people with mobility issues). Night safaris, beginning a couple of hours before sunset, are absurdly picturesque, as the lights start to come on over the city’s bridges, casting fairytale reflections over the canals (even amateurs will soon be capturing boats’ light trails with tips on the best long exposure settings).

Rederij De Jordaan Private Boat Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Rederij De Jordaan Private Boat Tour Arrow

Slick, slick, slick. As VIP canal cruises go, captain Reinhard Spronk’s historic saloon boat tours (aboard 1932 teak beauty Welmoed , or 1908’s smaller Farahilde ) are really the business. He and his partner Miloe run the show, taking private groups (reservations necessary) on bespoke tours of Amsterdam’s legendary canals. Pick-up is from your waterside hotel or Cafe Van Puffelen, by their office. This is going to be the highlight of your European tour, combining an utterly beautiful vintage boat, the most sophisticated company in town, and (for a supplement) red roses, gourmet finger food, and bottomless champagne.

Brouwerij 't IJ Bar Brewery Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Brouwerij ‘t IJ Arrow

Compared to neighboring Belgium, the Netherlands isn’t exactly known as a beer powerhouse, but the big news is that the capital now has craft breweries to shout about. So skip the queues at the mammoth, more famous Heineken Experience, and head to signature local craft brewer ‘t IJ, which was raising the bar on specialty brews long before ‘small batch’ was a hipster rite of passage. Finding the venue, opened in 1985 in an old bathhouse, is child’s play: the biggest wooden windmill in the Netherlands is next door. Friday to Sunday afternoon tours of the Funenkade HQ are a snappy 20-minute crash course in the magic of malt, hops and yeast. With only 20 spots going, and no pre-booking, get to the bar early to grab tickets (a free beer is included with the entry fee). Don’t bother bringing your bachelor party though – after one too many messy experiences in the past, they’re now officially barred.

The #1 Private Day Tours in Amsterdam!

He is a certified expert and experienced VIP tour guide and it shows. I learned more in the first 30 at the van Gough museum than I ever known before. The back story of the artist that Steven provided by was so compelling that my wife Debbie and I were hanging on every word. He guided us through the crowed museum in a way that we never felt rushed or pressured. His knowledge of van Gogh and art in general is encyclopaedic. .After our tour we relaxed at the De Gooyer windmill enjoying a snack and a delicious beer. We can’t wait to come back to Amsterdam and enjoy some of the countryside tours offered by Steven.

What can we say about Steven and Private Day Tours Amsterdam?? In one word, AMAZING! Went with my husband and 2 young girls (5 and 8) and spent 3 FANTASTIC DAYS. We loved that we could take things at our own pace - when the girls wanted to stop to pet a baby lamb or feed ducks there was no sense of rushing us - it made it feel so relaxed and natural, like Steven was part of the family...a very knowledgeable part of the family! :) He read our cues effortlessly, and each suggestion was perfect - when to stop for hot cocoa or a snack, and the best place to do it on top of that. Steven is an amazing tour guide, and he aims to please. Everything was amazing, and he was a great driver - that's an important one for me as I usually get motion sick if I'm not driving but not with Steven!

This was absolutely my favourite day in the Netherlands. We were picked up right on time, if not slightly early, by our tour guide Steve. This was our second private tour with Steve this week, so we knew it would be great. We went to Gouda, and we were so lucky that it was market day! Music playing, wheels of cheese, and stroopwafle! The Gouda town hall is stunning. After walking around Gouda we were off to a REAL cheese farm! Then we were off to Oudewater. This magical little city was breathtaking, I swear we were the only tourists there. We went to the weighing station, turns out I’m not a witch and have the certificate to prove it. This tour was one of the best day tours we’ve ever been on!

We had a wonderful day with Steve. First an enjoyable and informative walking tour of Delft. Then a visit to the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague to see some beautiful paintings (including Vermeer's View on Delft, which we were able to compare to the city we had just seen). Finally a nice walking tour of The Hague. Steve is personable, knowledgeable, interesting, and professional, and it made for a great fully-packed day. Thanks, Steve!

We enjoyed THREE DAYS with Steve while visiting Amsterdam. He was an excellent, knowledgeable guide and catered to all our wishes. I highly recommend and will definitely use him again when we return to Amsterdam.

I would highly recommend this tour. Steve gave us more in our tour than we could ask for. We got the story behind the story. Not only did we get to enjoy the countryside of the Netherlands - we learned about the history of how it was developed, etc. We drove by the home that Anne frank lived in before going into hiding, her bookstore then took a day trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam, Marken. Steve was amazing. We spent about 9 hours with him. He took us to places away from the tourists - we had a delightful lunch and our 17 year old DEVOURED the smoked eel. THANK you Steve for a trip we will treasure for a lifetime.

I did day tours for 4 days with Steve from Private Day Tours Amsterdam. I had the best time ever. Steve was very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. These tours were worth it and hugely enjoyable!

SEVEN absolutely fabulous day’s with Steve as our guide! We saw windmills, fishing villages, clog making, cheese farm and so much more all while Steve told us the history behind it all. He also translated as we stopped to talk to locals and really get a feel for each area we visited. When you’re ready for a break, you decide if you want to sit and eat or just stop at local eateries or breweries and Steve will take you to the tastiest places. He sensed when we were ready to move on and if something interested us or just happened as we walked by, we stopped to enjoy. Thank you Captain Steve for the wonderful time we had with you.

Our guide Steve was one of the best guides we have ever had. He continually asked us what was important to us to see and learn about so he could customize the day to our desires. Having been a guide for several years, he was very knowledgeable about the area and its history and was very. He is very personable and speaks excellent English. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this trip and this guide.

Steve led us on a terrific tour through Amsterdam. He was very knowledgeable and showed us places that connected us to the history of Amsterdam. This walking tour gave us an in-depth knowledge to the Jewish quarter, a subject he was very passionate about. I highly recommend experiencing a tour with Steve!

Steve is an excellent guide. We learned a lot about the Netherlands and the places we went to. He customized the trip to suit our needs/taste. For example, he noticed that my niece was fond of cows so he took us to the cheese farm that tended them. In Volendam, we had lunch at a lake-side restaurant that was more frequented by locals than tourists. A truly one-of-a-kind experience!

Steve is a great tour guide, driver and new friend. We toured 7 days with my wife, granddaughter and enjoyed every moment with Steve. Our knowledge of Holland, the arts and history was so expanded by his contribution.

You will feel like a dolphin, jumping in and out of the water. The Flyboard is a unique experience, one that you will never forget. This activity does not require experience. Even when you have never tried this before you can very much participate. Your instructor will tell you everything you need to know in a short training session and then you are ready to go out on the water and have fun.

Best private tour No 3. Romantic private boat tour through the Amsterdam canals including champs

The tour comes with a small bottle of Champagne and some small snacks.

You will take a beautiful tour amongst the iddilic Canal townhouses and you will see some of Amsterdam’s most famous bridges. Seeing the city through a ride over the canals is truly the best way to experience the city center.

It is definitely an added value to experience the art with a very knowledgeable art critic as you will see that you will discover a lot of new things about your favorite Dutch paintings and other arts.

5. Best For Small Groups: Private Family Canal Cruise

A saloon boat on the water in the city of Amsterdam. This is one of the boats you would take during private boat tours in Amsterdam.

📍 Departs From: Prinsengracht |   ⏳ Duration: 90 Minutes |  ✈️ BOOK NOW!

Traditional boat tours in Amsterdam can quickly become awkward with a multitude of random strangers packing into a sightseeing boat with you. Solve this problem by booking an Amsterdam private boat tour just for you!

Our guide was terrific. He told us a lot about what we were seeing and he couldn’t have been more enjoyable. Seeing Amsterdam from the canals after walking the streets also offered a unique perspective. Being on a private tour looked infinitely better than being a sardine on a large tour boat. – Jonathan ( see more reviews )

This extended family canal cruise accommodates up to 10 guests and can be completely customized to your whims and wishes. There’s even a 60-minute or 90-minute option , depending on how long you’d like to cruise for! Since it is a smaller boat, there is more opportunity to explore smaller canals not easily accessible by larger tourist companies. See the sights and stunning charm of the local waterways while the Amsterdam-native captain regales you with tales of the city.

Why Take a Private Canal Tour in Amsterdam?

When you think of Amsterdam, the first thing that comes to mind is often the city’s picturesque canals. These waterways are the lifeblood of the city. Other than biking in Amsterdam , the waterways are the most popular way to get around, and a private boat tour is the perfect way to explore them in style. ✅ With a private tour, you can fully customize your experience. Everything from the route you take to the food and drinks you enjoy on board is dictated by you! You’ll have the freedom to see the city’s famous landmarks and hidden gems at your own pace. These canal tours fit into even the shortest of Amsterdam weekend plans. ✅ The best part? You’ll bask in the city’s beauty without the crowds of a larger group tour. You’ll have better views and much less background chatter as you take in the scenery. ✅ Another benefit of a private canal cruise is the various events and parties it caters to. A chartered boat tour is a perfect option for everyone: from a romantic night for a couple, a special family gathering, or small groups of friends.

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days

• This was my first experience using travel agency for vacation and I couldn't be more satisfied. I highly recommend using Wise Yatra, they planned a wonderful trip that catered to all my personal needs. • First let's start with the location– Amsterdam is absolutely beautiful! My trip was only 4 days long but Wise Yatra made the most of it. They set up 3 tours within those days that gave the perfect opportunity to see a few of the key attractions within the Netherlands. One day was offered a walking tour through a popular local tour guide company. The guide was very knowledgeable of history and the downtown area, he was also very friendly. Another day offered the opportunity to see the Tulips, windmills and clogs through another local tour company. The company has coach bus accommodations to and from all attractions and meeting locations. The guide presented herself very professionally and also very knowledgeable of the history and attractions themselves. The last event offered through Wise Yatra was the canal cruise which offered an alternative perspective of the town via canal level. • Secondly, I could not ask for a better travel company to book through. Originally I booked this tour believing I would be joining a group. After realizing that was not the case, naturally I was apprehensive about moving forward with the trip. Associates at Wise Yatra reached out to me on a personal level to fine tune details… After expressing my concerns, the associates at Wise Yatra assured me they would be able to accommodate me as a solo traveler. My itinerary was made based on what I wanted, tours were upgraded from self guided to guided, my hotel was upgraded to a better location and I was able to stay in constant communication before, during and after my trip. They even made sure I made it home safe! Some upgrades came with a slight cost, some upgrades did not, however cost of upgrades were minimal and well worth it. The driver booked for airport transfer was local and very respectful. Also, all my questions about documents and information needed overseas were answered promptly and knowledgeable. All in all, Raj, Rachit, Nishchitha, and the rest of the team did a wonderful job. I look forward to using the Wise Yatra service again in the future.

ULTIMATE BUCKET LIST

This itinerary a great if you want to see many cities in about a month. Tourradar provided all the train reservations, most seat reservations, and all the the hotel lodging. They also included information on how to get to each hotel from the arrival train station, information on city sites, city maps, and customer service was usually prompt to respond to any questions. If you are familiar with European train travel, this would probably be a great & easy way to visit many cities. However, we are American, and not familiar, so, at times, we did have some difficulty with finding the right trains, and the right platforms, and not speaking the language of the many countries we visited did make it challenging, but overall, we managed. Most hotels were close enough to the train station we could walk, some required bus or metro, which made it more challenging, figuring out how to pay (tickets needed or pay on board?), where exactly to the find bus stop (and which side of the road to catch the bus), etc. Tourradar did provide details on this, but honestly, sometimes it was hard to follow, and determine where exactly to exit the train stations, or find the correct street, bus stop. Again, the language barrier made it hard to get assistance from locals. However, even with the few difficulties we had, I would still recommend this tour and Tourradar. They did an excellent job of booking all the transportation, seats and lodging. All hotels were nice, clean, & well maintained. Extra information provided, suggested sites, maps, etc. was also very helpful. I have planned many complicated trips before so I know it takes a lot of work, so having the trip all handled by Tourradar was fantastic. This is the second time we have used this company (the first was a self drive tour of Scotland), and we were totally satisfied with that trip also. Therefore, I would not hesitate to use or recommend Tourradar to others for their travel experiences.

The boat turned up on time and it was a pleasure to spend time chatting about life in Amsterdam with the captain."

When taking a tour, no matter what tour it is, I like to go with the tried and tested option. No one wants to book a tour with no reviews, right? That’s why I really love this tour. Over 250 different families have taken the tour and had a great experience. It’s more than passed the test of time.

Amsterdam 90-Minute Private Family Canal Cruise allows you to experience the magic of Amsterdam on a private family canal cruise. It’s a 90-minute journey that takes you past the top landmarks of this beautiful city.

But a boat tour of Amsterdam offers more than just scenic views and historical insights. It provides a perfect introduction to Amsterdam , giving you tips on places to visit later on your own. This is what is great about private tours, you can ask the guide questions whenever you like.

The longer duration of this cruise allows for a leisurely exploration, ensuring you don’t miss out on any of the city’s hidden gems.

Another perk of taking a private tour is that you can enjoy the flexibility to customise your route according to your interests. You can pick which canals and which landmarks you want to sail past- you can quite literally make your dream canal tour come true!

Unfortunately, food and drink aren’t included unlike other tours, but you’re welcome to bring your own refreshments onboard. And one last thing, don’t let the fact this is a family tour put you off. If you are a couple or a friend group, this is still the best tour for you in my opinion.
