About This Route
Discover Lake Neuchâtel on this tour featuring 107km of cycling on segregated cycle paths with no ups or downs worth mentioning.
The capital of its eponymous canton, Neuchâtel is a university town easily reached by train from anywhere in Switzerland. You leave the town to pedal through the vineyards on the northern side of the lake. Passing a succession of wine-growing villages, you reach Grandson and its magnificent castle, witness to a famous battle in 1476 between Charles the Bold and the Swiss. The next town on the loop is Yverdon-les-Bains, a site with Celtic origins located at the end of the lake, and you continue on your way alongside the Grande Cariçaie wetland. This marshy resource with its many reed beds extends 40 km along the southern shore of the lake and provides a habitat for more than 100 species of bird. Estavayer-le-Lac is a good place to pause a while. This particularly well preserved medieval town harbours a 13th century castle, as well as agreeable beaches. Before returning to Neuchâtel, you make a brief visit to Canton Bern and the Swiss-German-speaking part of the country. This loop includes short sections on unmetalled surfaces conceived for road cycling which avoid main road traffic.

Our cycling tips in and around Neuchâtel
Where we love to ride.
Gravel bike
The tour of lake Neuchâtel makes for a long charming ride. It presents no major difficulties but at 105 km it still makes for a long day in the saddle, unless of course you break it up in two days. We would recommend a stop at the charming town of Estavayer-le-Lac on the South East side of the lake.
If you want to tackle a spectacular local climb then head up to the Chasseral (1585m) to the North East of Neuchâtel. You can return by a different route via the neighbouring lake of Bienne.
Why Neuchâtel is such a popular cycling destination ?
Neuchâtel sits on the shores of the biggest lake which is entirely in Switzerland.
This charming Swiss town makes for an excellent base for a cycling holiday as it is nestled between the bucolic Gruyère region and the Jura mountain range.
There is cycling to be had for all levels.

Through forests, meadows and gorges – Germany’s Neuchâtel Bike
From the mountains of the Swiss Jura to spectacular rock formations and historic town centres, the canton of Neuchâtel has many facets. You can explore them all as you mountain bike along the Neuchâtel Bike route, experiencing its forest and meadow paths and paved mountain passes. Water is a defining element on this adventure. The magnificent Lake Neuchâtel and the rivers Doubs, with its dramatic waterfall, and Areuse, which carves through a rocky gorge, are your faithful companions. The Neuchâtel Bike route runs for 200 kilometres (124 mi), with 100 kilometres (62 mi) on asphalt and 60 kilometres (37 mi) on natural surfaces. You’ll have around 20 kilometres (12 mi) of singletrack – mainly S1 and occasionally S2 terrain. With the right technique and enough stamina, these trails are great fun. In total, over 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) of climbing awaits. You’ll wind your way up serpentines to summits and tackle steep climbs with 20% gradients. The four stages of the Neuchâtel Bike, which I detail here, are all of a similar length – 46 to 54 kilometres (28 to 33 mi). This means you can take a break from the saddle to discover the highlights en route, such as natural spectacles and picturesque houses. The loop starts and ends directly at Neuchâtel railway station so it’s easy to plan your journey by public transport. If you want to spend a little more time in the city after your ride, there’s plenty of accommodation available. I wish you a varied MTB adventure full of wonderful views and experiences on the Neuchâtel Bike trails.
