Righteous Brothers' Bill Medley talks Beatles, Phil Spector and keeping the legacy going
The Righteous Brothers had the hardest job in show business: They opened for the Beatles in 1964.
Bill Medley and Bucky Heard, who's replaced the late Bobby Hatfield — are now touring theaters as the Righteous Brothers, with upcoming shows in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.
In a USA Today Network New Jersey interview, Medley talked about the early days and the 1964 tour.
“We had a front-row seat to history,” he said.
The Righteous Brothers, from Southern California, had a minor hit with “Little Latin Lupe Lu,” and saw some chart action on the West Coast when they were booked to open for the Beatles. Jackie De Shannon, the Bill Black Combo and the Exciters were also on the bill.
“It (was) kind of the boot camp of rock 'n' roll,” said Medley, 81, of the tour. “In California it was fine because we had West Coast hits, ... but when we got to the South and the East Coast and this and that and the 'Righteous Brothers,' they thought we were a religious choir, or something. Some nights it was tough. It was 'We want the Beatles, we want the Beatles,' but we kind of understood it.”
The tour took place in in August and September of 1964, several months after the Beatles' breakthrough appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in February. Shows took pace in arenas and stadiums at a time when rock music's touring industry was nascent.
Medley and Hatfield feared for the safety of the fans.
“When you work a huge stadium and they’re out down on the field, the kids start pressing to the front and it starts to squash all the kids in the front. It’s very scary,” Medley said. “Literally most of what we were seeing was cops and paramedics pulling kids out over the fence to save their lives. I don’t think anybody was really hurt, thank God ... "

The Righteous Brothers exited the tour halfway through to appear on the then-new TV show “Shindig.” By then, they had made four new friends from Liverpool.
“We were all on the same plane going from one concert to the other and got to know the guys pretty well,” Medley said. “They were very protected but on the plane it was pretty relaxed and just good guys, just real street guys. They were as excited about what was happening as anybody. They didn’t know it was going to happen at the extent that it did. They were just overjoyed.”
The Righteous Brothers joined another act on the rise for their '64 tour: the Rolling Stones. They also connected with famed produced Phil Spector. Their first Spector-produced hit was the Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil classic, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’."
“Just Once in My Life,” “Unchained Melody” and “The White Cliffs of Dover” followed with the eccentric Spector.
The run established them as the focal point of the Blue-Eyed Soul movement, and as arguably the greatest vocal duo of the rock 'n' roll era.
“Phil was real good with us, and eccentric is the right word,” Medley said. “He wanted people to think he was real eccentric, and I guess you have to be eccentric to want people to think you’re eccentric. But he treated us real well. He was used to working with a lot of girl groups, and Bobby and I were just a couple of street guys. ... I think he knew there was a limitation to how far he could weird out on us."

Spector, who's known as the originator of the “Wall of Sound,” was convicted of murder in 2009. By 1966, the Righteous Brothers had moved on from Spector and Medley produced “(You're My) Soul and Inspiration.” The duo broke up in '68, and had a comeback hit with “Rock and Roll Heaven” in 1974.
In 1987, Medley recorded “(I've Had) The Time of My Life” with Jennifer Warnes for “Dirty Dancing.” The song was co-written by New Brunswick-native Franke Previte.
“So basically we did the song just to sing together,” said Medley. “Nobody thought the movie was going to do anything.”
The song was a No. 1 Billboard hit and won an Academy Award.
“I said, 'What’s the name of the movie? I said man, that sounds like a bad porno. They said, 'No, no, it’s really cute.' So we did it and it’s a great song, and Jennifer and I were happy to do it.”

Medley and Hatfield were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Later that year, Hatfield passed away shortly before a Righteous Brothers concert at the age of 63.
“After 13, 14 years, I had a lot of friends saying 'Bill, everybody wants to hear this music, don't let the music die.' I started thinking about it,” Medley said. “I wasn’t into it and I didn’t want to do it, but I went into see Bucky Heard’s show and he did a Journey song and just killed it. If he can do Steve Perry he can do a version of Bobby Hatfield.”
Heard is an Alabama native who has worked with Andy Williams, Glen Campbell and more.
“I told Bucky when we got together, I don’t want you to sound like Bobby but I just need to sing like Bobby,” Medley said. “Bring yourself to it. I knew it was enormous shoes to fill. You just can't replace Bobby Hatfield. He’s one of the great singers to come out of the '60s, but Bucky is doing a phenomenal job.
"I knew Bucky five, six years before we tried it and he's a good guy, a good family man— and that's damn near as important, if not more important, than being a great singer.”

State Theatre New Jersey Presents The Righteous Brothers, February 19
The Righteous Brothers are best known for a string of #1 classics, including the most played song in radio history, “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'”
The fully renovated State Theatre New Jersey presents The Righteous Brothers with Bill Medley & Bucky Heard on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 8pm. The concert experience features their biggest hits-"Lovin' Feelin'," "Soul & Inspiration," "Unchained Melody," "Rock and Roll Heaven," and Medley's Grammy-winning Dirty Dancing theme "The Time of My Life." Tickets range from $39-$99.
With a string of #1 classics, including the most played song in radio history, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield topped the charts for decades. After Bobby's death in 2003, Medley continued to perform to sold-out crowds around the world, but fans and friends pleaded with him to keep The Righteous Brothers alive. Medley says, "No one could ever take Bobby's place, but when I caught Bucky Heard 's show it all came together."
Bill Medley is truly one of the iconic figures in American music history. His instantly recognizable baritone voice has anchored some of the biggest recordings of all time. He's won a Grammy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and an American Music Award. The Orange County, CA native began writing songs as a boy and had his breakout as a songwriter and singer when, in 1963, the Medley-penned "Little Latin Lupe Lu" became a regional hit for Medley and Bobby Hatfield, as their first release as The Righteous Brothers. Other regional hits followed, "Justine," "Koko Joe," and "My Babe," which led to a regular spot on ABC-TV's national Shindig! broadcast. The show, featuring a cast of regulars, along with guest stars every week, catered to the teen audience, something new for TV at that time. Shindig's smash success coincided with The Righteous Brothers opening for both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones on their first U.S. tours.
Soon, The Righteous Brothers caught producer Phil Spector 's attention and he signed them to record what would become, according to BMI, the most played song in the history of American radio-the Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil classic, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin.'" A string of top hits followed until 1968 when Medley and Hatfield agreed to part ways to pursue solo efforts. Medley soon scored with top 10 hits, "Peace, Brother, Peace" and "Brown-eyed Woman." In 1974, Medley and Hatfield re-united and within a few weeks had yet another monster hit with "Rock and Roll Heaven."
From then, until Hatfield's passing in 2003, The Righteous Brothers never stopped performing to packed crowds. During that period Medley also recorded the chart-topping duet with Jennifer Warnes , "The Time of My Life," for the movie Dirty Dancing. It went on to sell over 32 million copies worldwide. In 2003, shortly before Hatfield passed away, The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Bucky Heard is an Alabama native and Auburn University alum. He's been one of the most popular and versatile performers in America for several years, headlining countless shows in major venues. His reputation as a gutsy rock and roll singer, with an incredible vocal range, has garnered much critical praise and a legion of fans.
He's been hand-selected to share the concert stage with legends, like Andy Williams and Glen Campbell , and honored as "Male Vocalist of the Year" by entertainment publications. Credited with being one of the hardest working and in-demand performers, Heard has rocked his way across America with his 10-piece horn band, and also starred in numerous national production shows.
In recent years, Heard created, wrote, and produced an original children's musical variety show called, Rock U Mentally, which headlined the American Bandstand Theatre for two consecutive summers.

Things To Do
Music + concerts, music + concerts | why getting back on stage is ‘medicine’ for the righteous brothers’ bill medley.
Sixty years ago, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were having fun singing in Orange County rock ‘n’ roll vocal groups. But Medley never thought that, well into the 21st century, he’d still be with the Righteous Brothers , singing many of those early-1960s songs.
“When Bobby and I first started, rock ‘n’ roll was considered a fad at that point,” Medley said. “We had some West Coast hits from ’63-’65. We thought, ‘we’ll ride it out until the fad’s over and we’ll go back to driving a truck.’”
Now 81, Medley’s never had to get behind the wheel of a Peterbilt or Mack. In fact, because of COVID-19, he’s just had the longest time off from performing in six decades.
“Thank God, we’re out and the audiences are out, getting back to some sort of normal,” said Medley, who will sing at Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino in Indio on Feb. 11 and at the Haugh Performing Arts Center in Glendora on Feb. 12 with his new Righteous Brother partner Bucky Heard. “I’m kind of a one-trick pony. All I can do is perform.
“After this last year and a half, and everything I’ve gone through, getting on stage is really the medicine for all of that.”
Off the road for the first time in 55 years and performing only by livestream while quarantined at his California home, Medley had surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his throat in May 2020. Then, in June, Paula, his wife of 35 years, died after a five-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Medley’s voice, he said, is fine. He can even hit some higher notes than before the surgery. But the man known for his smooth deep voice can’t come close to matching the highs he produced when he was a teenager.
“When I was 16, I might have been a first tenor,” he said. “I was 5’ 3″ and had a high tenor voice. One year, I grew 7 inches and my voice went from first tenor to kind of a bass-baritone. I was always singing, church choirs, school choirs. Then, when I was 15, I heard Little Richard and said ‘That’s something I want to be involved with.’ I never dreamed of any success. Then I met Bobby.”
First together in a group called the Paramours, bass Medley and tenor Hatfield became the Righteous Brothers in 1963, and the next year had a couple of local hits with “My Babe,” and “Little Latin Lupe Lu” that were big enough to land them an opening spot for the Beatles .
Then the duo hooked up with “Wall of Sound” producer Phil Spector and found the Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil song, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.”
“We knew it was a great song,” Medley said. “But after it was recorded, we didn’t have a clue it was going to do what it was going to do. It was a 4-minute song and in those days, songs were 2-, 2½-minutes long. I sounded like I was on the wrong speed. I think everything wrong with it made it a special song.”
“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” one of radio’s most played songs ever, propelled the Righteous Brothers to a new level.
Medley, who got thrown into producing the duo’s early singles “because nobody else wanted to do it” ended up producing the Righteous Brothers’ next big hit.
“I accidentally produced ‘Unchained Melody,’” Medley said. “Phil Spector, our producer, came to me and said ‘I need you to produce the albums and I produce the singles’ because he took way too long and spent way too much money.
“Unchained Melody” was supposed to be an album track and they put it on the B-side, he said.
“Every disc jockey in the country flipped it over and I’d produced a hit record,” Medley said.
The Righteous Brothers, who had another handful of hits, split up in 1968 when Medley left to pursue a solo career. But they regrouped in 1974, got another hit with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven” and continued to appear together as a duo through the ‘80s, while Medley continued to do solo work.
Then “Unchained Melody” got a new life from the 1990 film “Ghost,” anchoring a platinum-selling soundtrack album and putting the Righteous Brothers back on the road and performing three-month residencies through the early 2000s.
Hatfield died of a heart attack in a Kalamazoo, Michigan, hotel room prior to a 2003 concert, seemingly ending the Righteous Brothers. But, in 2016, Medley reformed the group with Heard stepping into Hatfield’s role.
The Righteous Brothers will, of course, do all their hits in their concerts.
“I feel so grateful the audience still wants to come out and hear these songs,” he said. “The audience is really what keeps the excitement alive. When you walk out on stage, you feel like you’re 25 years old anyway. When the audience reacts, it’s kind of like a magical, out-of-body experience. It’s a real wonderful feeling.”

Music + concerts, music + concerts | bill medley opens up about the righteous brothers’ farewell tour and retirement.
After six decades as a Righteous Brother, Bill Medley says it’s time.
It’s time to leave the road he’s traveled as one of the Righteous Brothers , first with Bobby Hatfield (until his death in 2003) and since 2016 with replacement Bucky Heard.
Time to sit back and – well, Medley’s not quite sure what comes next.
ALSO SEE: OC’s first Hall of Famers will be inducted Friday; Gwen Stefani set to appear in person
“Boy, you know, that’s a great question, and obviously that’s the real thought,” Medley says from his longtime home of Newport Beach. “Because I don’t – I’ve been so busy in the business and traveling and going and doing I don’t know.
“My wife Paula passed away a little over three years ago, and I never realized until she was gone, you know, you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone,” the 83-year-old Orange County native says. “And so I don’t know what I’m going to do.
“I’d like to keep writing and maybe produce,” he says. “I would love to find a younger artist that I could hopefully kind of groom a little bit. Show them some short cuts. Yeah, I’d love to do that.
“But other than that, man, I’ll tell you, I don’t know. You’ll probably see me walking up and down Santa Ana, saying, ‘You want to buy a record?’”
The Righteous Brothers, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, are best known for such hits as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Unchained Melody,” and “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.”
We first met Medley in 2007 to talk about the 20th anniversary of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” his duet with Jennifer Warnes for the movie “Dirty Dancing,” which not only reached No. 1 on the charts but also won a Grammy, a Golden Globe and an Oscar. And we’ve checked in with him over the years as other news of his career as a solo artist and Righteous Brothers arose.
So when news of the Righteous Brothers’ Thank You, Farewell Tour arrived, and with a pair of Southern California shows on Thursday, Jan. 18 and Friday, Jan. 19, we rang him up again to talk about why he’s leaving the road, the dreams he had as a young artist before stardom arrived, and what comes next.
Q: I’ll start with the title of the tour – Thank You, Farewell – and ask if it means what it sounds like, and how you came to that decision.
A: Yeah, we really haven’t figured it all out. There’s still some contracts and stuff that we have to fulfill. But it’s slowly but surely coming to an end.
Q: Deciding that now is the time, what played into your thought process?
A: Traveling. It’s that simple, man. I love to do the shows. I just love the shows. But the traveling is just getting worse and worse. You know, I’m 83 and when I was a kid, it was pretty exciting. But doing the job, doing the show, well, I’ve always said, ‘You’re paying me to travel. You don’t pay me to do the show. The show’s frosting on the cake.’
Q; I think the last time we talked was when you were about to team up with Bucky Heard and tour again as the Righteous Brothers. What’s that been like to have a duo partner again?
A: It’s just been really exciting. It’s been wonderful. He’s a great singer, and more important, he’s a wonderful, wonderful guy. We have just become the best of friends, and I just love him. If I couldn’t have Bobby, Bucky certainly was the guy to fill in for Bob. It’s just been phenomenal.
Q: Let me ask you a couple of questions about the early days, when you were a teenager or in your early 20s, just starting to write and perform and record. How big did you let yourself dream that music might be a career for you?
A: I was raised in Santa Ana and a friend of mine asked me, he had written a song, and he wanted me to sing it because he heard that I could sing. And I never took my singing serious at all, except for when I was in choir I had to take it serious. But you know, I don’t think I allowed myself to think about being successful as a songwriter or singer.
I was just doing what I loved to. I’d sit in the house there and play the piano for 12 hours. Drive my mom nuts. But yeah, you know I don’t ever remember thinking, boy, this is what I want to do. The dream was just so far away.
You know, when you’re talking about success in this business, it’s just, well, it’s magical. I’ve always said I wish you could just go to college for four years. You graduate and they say, ‘Here’s your first hit record,’ and you’re in. But it ain’t that way.
Q: Did you have a backup plan as a young man? Like, OK, I’m going to write songs until can’t anymore and then go do this or that?
A: I got to tell you, I was one of those 15-, 16-, 17-year-old punks, you know. Santa Ana was ‘Happy Days’ back then. And I, unfortunately, quit school when I was 16, which was stupid. A lot of times I would get four Fs and one A, because I’m with the choir.
But no, I never had a backup plan. I just was headed into a mountain. I was going nowhere, nowhere fast, and God just took me by the hand and said, ‘Listen, man, I think you’d better try singing.’
And then, thank God, John Wimber from Orange County, he was working in Vegas a lot, and he came home and wanted to start a group that could get a lot of work. So he took Bobby and Bobby’s drummer, and myself and my guitar player, and put us all together. And boy, when I started singing with Bobby, first off, it was just so much fun because Bobby and I were absolutely raised on the same music.
It just felt so right, and we felt like we were stealing money. Even though at John’s Black Derby in Santa Ana we were making $100 a week, we thought we had died and went to heaven. Then a good friend of mine, Mike Patterson here from Orange County, was working at the Rende–zvous Ballroom down in Balboa, and convinced Bobby and I to go down there. And that was the start of the Righteous Brothers.
Q: In ’62, the Righteous Brothers released ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu,’ which was a hit at least regionally. But it was still a few years until ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.’ What was that period like, and what was it like when ‘Lovin’ Feeling’ hit No. 1?
A: With ‘Lovin’ Feeling,’ Phil Spector produced ‘Lovin’ Feeling.’ He called our company, Moonglow Records, which was from Garden Grove, and we were signed to them. But Phil wanted to buy the remainder of our contract or lease it. And so we recorded it.
But at the same time, we were doing a TV show, ‘Shindig,’ and it was huge. It was like doing Ed Sullivan every week. So it was like the perfect storm, a song, ‘Lovin’ Feeling’ coming out, and we were starting to become nationally known through the television.
You’re right, ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu’ was like a West Coast hit, and it did fine and kind of got us moving. But the truth is when we ‘Lupe Lu’ and that stuff, we used to have conversations about what we were gonna do when the fad fades. Because everybody thought, well, rock and roll, you know, rock and roll is gonna go away.
So our lives really changed. I mean, I can remember we were going to do a show in Chicago, and we were driving from the airport to the hotel. We stopped for gas, and we went into the office of the gas station, and the guy said, ‘Jesus, you’re the Righteous Brothers!’ And we went, ‘How the hell did you know that?’ That was the first time we said, ‘Oh, well, maybe this is something.’
Q: When I was prepping for this call, I realized that in November it had been 20 years since Bobby died. How did you feel when that anniversary came up?
A: My daughter (McKenna Medley) called me right away. I knew, anyway. A lot of people called me and I think I put something on the website.
And I went to the grave, the grave site (in Corona Del Mar) just to tell him I missed him. We were together quite a while, and you come real brothers, you know. I know that sounds stupid, and everybody says it, but you really do become brothers, the good, bad and the ugly. Brothers.
But yeah, I miss him a lot. I thought about him for about a month after that.
Q: So when you do wrap up the farewell tour?
A: I don’t know. I mean, I would like to think I would enjoy and normal life until I’m out of here. Like just maybe go to the show, have some dinners. You know, I’ve met a lady. I have a lady and that’s gonna help a great deal. But I don’t really have any flat-out plans.
Q: I saw on McKenna’s Instagram that you’ve got a new grandchild, so you can be a grandpa for a while, too.
A: I’m a grandpa and I’m a great-grandpa. My son made me a great-grandpa. So yeah, that’s another thing. I would really love to spend more time with the kids, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
I didn’t get much of a chance to do that. When we were young, my first wife, Karen, if there was a birthday or an anniversary or something, but we were booked to do the Ed Sullivan show, I would say, ‘Honey, I can’t be here for the birthday. I have to go – or actually, I get to go to Ed Sullivan.’ I said, ‘But the minute it’s more important than that, I will be here.’
She passed away in ’76, and my son was 10 years old and there was nobody but me. So I took time off to go raise my son, because I promised Karen that’s what I would do. It was important to do that. Instead of being Bill Righteous, I was Darrin’s dad. It was very cool.
Q: What’s a Righteous Brothers show like on these final dates?
A: The Righteous Brothers were always, well, certainly old-school now, but we were a little old-school even when we started, because we were a couple of years older than say the Beach Boys and the Beatles. So we would do a lot of humor. And the reason is because the songs that we had hits with were such dramatic ballads that we tried to lighten it up.
So the show is pretty much the same thing. We do all the hits, and a couple of surprises. The thing I love to hear the most is when we go out and sign autographs and they say, ‘Boy, I didn’t expect that.’ I hope they mean it in a good way,
Q: I’m sure they mean it in a good way.
A: I think so. Well, they were smiling.

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

Sixty years ago, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were having fun singing in Orange County rock 'n' roll vocal groups. But Medley never thought that, well into the 21st century, he'd still be with the Righteous Brothers, singing many of those early-1960s songs.
