Experience Famous Attractions

Nestled in Ontario, Canada, the Bruce Peninsula stands as a captivating natural wonder. Its town of Tobermory is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters, mesmerizing shipwreck sites, Flowerpot Island, and iconic lighthouse.

Flowerpot Island

Flowerpot Island is the only island in Fathom Five National Marine Park with campsites and hiking trails.

Flowerpot Island is the sole accessible island within the Fathom Five National Marine Park, spanning around 2 square kilometers. It rests at the juncture of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The island’s bedrock consists of a soft sedimentary rock called dolomite, a type of limestone. Water-soluble rock, ice in crevices, and the forces of time have shaped the current landscape over thousands of years.

Flowerpot Island Lighthouse

The Big Tub Lighthouse, built in 1885, plays a crucial role in guiding ships safely into the harbor through the intricate waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Situated near Tobermory, the Flowerpot Island Lighthouse stands as a historic beacon on Lake Huron. With its distinctive red and white stripes, this iconic lighthouse has long guided mariners, adding charm to the island’s breathtaking landscapes and making it a must-visit attraction for those seeking history and natural beauty.

Shipwrecks Tobermory

Tobermory features over 20 shipwrecks, many from late 19th-century steamboats and schooners. Glass-bottom boat tours allow you to see two sunken ships—one submerged, the other partially visible. Exploring these wrecks offers a glimpse into history. Glass-bottom boats are offered, allowing visitors to observe sunken ships by stepping onto the glass floor, just a 5-minute journey from the shipwreck.

Though retired, volunteers reside there since 1998 for maintenance and on-site interpretation. The iconic red and white stripes add to its charm, making it a picturesque spot for exploration.

Tobermory Boat Cruises: A 2023 Guide

boat cruises tobermory

Heading to Tobermory this summer , and want to take one of the famous boat cruises? You’re in the right place.

Tobermory is one of the most charming small towns in Ontario , and is surrounded by some of the most scenic beauty. The boat cruises are one of the best way to explore the rock formations of the Niagara Escarpment, and the crystal-clear blue water.

Having been to Tobermory multiple times, I can break down the different cruise options for you, as there are so many of them. From there, you’ll have a better idea of which of the cruises in Tobermory fit your schedule and preferences best.

Make the most of your trip to Tobermory by being well informed, and knowing where and how to make the best cruise choice for you or your party. Tobermory is famous for its glass bottom cruises, and we’re going to go over the two cruise lines that offer them, as well as other cruising options in town.

So, let’s dive in.

Glass Bottom Boat Cruises

Here’s everything you need to know about the stops that will be made on the glass bottom boat cruises

Tobermory boat cruise

The glass bottom cruise options generally make three different stops:

Stop 1 is Big Tub Harbour , which is a small cove. In the cove, you’ll see a Big Tub Lighthouse, and the 1880s Sweepstakes Shipwreck (pictured above) which is only 5 ft below the water and very well in tact.

Stop 2 is Flowerpot Island , famous for its beautiful ‘flowerpot’ shaped rock formations.

tobermory flowerpot island

These glass bottom boat cruises are offered by two different companies: Bruce Anchor , and Blue Heron. They both offer a ‘stay on’ cruise option, and a ‘drop off’ option.

The Stay-On Options (at Bruce Anchor and Blue Heron )

The stay on option means that you stay on the boat for the round trip. You will go from Tobermory to the Big Tub, and then flowerpot island, and straight back again. The entire trip will take just over an hour. If you choose the ‘drop off’ option, then you will get off the boat at Flowerpot Island, and picked up later.

Let’s go through what you need to know about each of these options.

Glass Bottom Boat Cruises (Stay-on option)

Tobermory is famous for its glass-bottom boat cruises. The water is crystal clear and the glass-bottoms allow you to see down to the floor of the lake.

Tobermory Boat Cruise

The stay-on glass bottom boat cruises are perfect for anyone who doesn’t particularly want to hike Flowerpot Island, for whatever reason. If you just want just the cruise without the hike, then this is the perfect option. If you’re doing this cruise with small children, with elderly or mobility impaired, this is the option that I’d recommend.

Here are the similarities and differences between the two different stay-on glass bottom boat cruises offered by both Bruce Anchor and Blue Heron.

Stay-On Glass Bottom Boat Cruises

TIP: If you choose to sail with Bruce Anchor, they have two different ships. The Explorer and The Fusion. They both cost the same, and look fairly similar.

Glass Bottom Boat Cruises (Drop-Off option)

Both Bruce Anchor and Blue Heron offer the option for you to get off at Flower pot island and explore. Here’s a break down on how those work.

Tobermory boat cruise

Bruce Anchor and Blue Heron both offer cruises that allow you to get off at Flowerpot Island, and stay there for a few hours before hopping on a cruise that takes you back to mainland. Here is the comparison between both of their drop-off options.

A few things to note:

  • “Peak times” refer to anytime in the summer months – June, July and August. These are the busiest months for tourism in Tobermory
  • The same details mentioned with regards to boarding area and cancellation policy applies to the stay on and drop off cruise options for Bruce Anchor and Blue Heron
  • While 0-3 children are free of charge, they still require their own ticket , so don’t forget to include them in your booking

Should I Get Off at Flowerpot Island?

Flowerpot Island is a unique piece of natural landscape and famous for its ‘flowerpot’ shaped rock formations, which can’t be found anywhere else. Here’s everything you need to know about exploring Flowerpot Island.

Flowerpot Island is really something. Its a beautiful piece of natural landscape that is completely unique to this region and can’t be found anywhere else. You can go swimming, hiking or have a picnic. There are caves to explore, and of course, you’ll want to get photos of the gorgeous one-of-a-kind rock formations against the turquoise water. Its an experience that doesn’t do justice until you can see it in real life.

Things to Keep in Mind about Flowerpot Island:

  • There are no amenities: no food, no electricity or garbage cans.  Bring full water bottles.
  • There are compost washrooms only
  • The terrain is quite uneven and its not the easiest hike. I wouldn’t recommend coming here with anyone very young (under 5) or anyone with any kind of mobility impairment. Be sure to wear good walking shoes!
  • Flowerpot Island is a sensitive piece of nature that they are working hard to preserve, so please leave it better than you found it. Take all your garbage back with you.

Flowerot island beach, things to do with kids

I took a cruise with Bruce Anchor alone with my one year old while my husband was getting his scuba diving certification with Diver’s Den in town. I chose the stay-on option, because I knew it would be easier with a child of this age. My husband has hiked Flowerpot Island, and he loved it. But based on his experience hiking there, and my view of the island from the boat of my stay-on cruise – we would only advise you to get off at Flowerpot Island if you feel comfortable for the three hours outdoors , with minimal shade, amenities. Be sure to bring good hiking shoes, and lots of water!

Good news – there are other cruise options in Tobermory besides the glass bottom tours.

Sunset Cruises in Tobermory

One of the most popular activities in Tobermory are sunset cruises.

tobermory sunset

Sunset Cruises in Tobermory are offered through Blue Heron. They will take you to see the Grotto and the Indian Head Cove. Departure times vary to leave it well timed with the sunset, so the timing changes slightly throughout the summer months.

In spring, the sunset cruises leave on Saturday nights only. In the summer, they leave every night. All of these cruises are weather dependent.

Tobermory Wave

Another boat cruising company in Tobermory is Tobermory Wave . Like Blue Heron, Tobermory Wave leaves from Little Tub Harbour. They don’t have glass bottoms – these boats are smaller, more similar to a motorboat. Unlike with Blue Heron and Bruce Anchor daytime cruises, you get to see the grotto with Tobermory Wave.

So if you want to see the grotto in addition to  Flowerpot Island, and the Sweepstakes shipwreck from a boat in one tour – then Tobermory Wave might be what you’re looking for.

With Tobermory Wave, an adult ticket is $70 and children’s are $62. The tour is 2h 20 mins. They do have a 3-day cancellation policy, so keep this in mind when you book.

Tobermory Cruises: Where to Stay Nearby

There are a few accommodation options in Tobermory, but its always nice to be close to the harbour and the cruise boarding areas, to minimize the stress of commuting to the town and looking for parking.

Bruce Anchor Motel

If you’re sailing with Bruce Anchor, there’s nowhere more convenient to stay than their hotel , which is located just a stone’s throw from their dock. This is what I chose to do. It was convenient being so close by. The nice thing about The Bruce Anchor Hotel is that its also only a 5-minute walk to the Tobermory Harbour and restaurants . So the location was great all around.

If you’re planning to sail with Blue Heron, the Bruce Anchor motel is still close – about a 10 minute walk from the Little Tub Harbour where you’ll board.

Tobermory Cruises: Final Thoughts

We hope this covered the information you need to select the best Tobermory cruise for your stay. I sincerely hope that this was helpful to you. The cruises are a must, whether you’re in Tobermory with kids , or a group of adults.

Flowerpot Island

Just 6.5 kilometres off the coast of Tobermory lies Flowerpot Island.  This island is one of Canada’s most fascinating natural attractions. Flowerpot Island is famous for its natural sea stacks, also known as the “flowerpots.”   Flowerpot Island offers adventurers an opportunity to explore caves, hiking trails, a historic light station and a variety of rare plants. Flowerpot Island is the only island in Fathom Five National Marine Park  with campsites and hiking trails. The island is only accessible by boat, but we can take you there! Things to do on Flowerpot Island

Hiking Flowerpot Island is the best way to see all that the island has to offer. The loop trail starts at Beachy Cove, taking you past the small and large flowerpots and to the cave where you may choose to climb the stairs to the cave platform. From there, it is just a short hike to the lightstation. You may return to Beachy Cove the same way along the coast, but those who would like a challenge may follow the remainder of the loop trail, which offers a more rugged and adventurous hike though the interior portion of the island.

As you explore the island you may notice caves in the rock. Flowerpot has many caves, some of which are accessible, and others that are not. These caves were formed after the last ice age approximately 12,000 years ago when the glacial Lake Algonquin completely covered Flowerpot Island. As the lake levels fell in stages, the cliffs were exposed the eroding effects of the lake for varying durations of time. This phenomenon caused numerous caves to form in the cliffs in various sizes and locations throughout the island.

The historic Flowerpot Lightstation is a must-see feature of Flowerpot Island. Built at the turn of the century, this lightstation was maintained by lighthouse keepers who lived on the island from April through December. With the development of a new technological era, the once manned light was replaced in the 60’s with the new steel light tower that stands today on Castle Bluff. The observation deck marks the location where the original lighthouse once stood. The three-structure station on the north side of the island is maintained by a volunteer group, the Friends of Fathom Five. Volunteer lighthouse keepers stay on the island during the summer season to keep up the grounds and welcome the many visitors to the island.

The original lighthouse was constructed in 1897 to guide ships safely through the once busy shipping channel located just north of Flowerpot Island. The original building did not look like your typical lighthouse, it was a rectangular wooden building perched just shy of 90 feet above the water level on Castle Bluff. Another building was constructed on Castle Bluff in 1909 for the purpose of housing the fog alarm machinery.

The original lighthouse and fog horn buildings were decommissioned in 1969 and a steel tower was erected to replace it. The steel tower is fully automated and is still in operation today. Today Flowerpots viewing platform occupies the area on Castle Bluff where the fog alarm building once stood.

In 1901 the two storey light keeper’s home was constructed, and in 1959 the one storey light keeper’s assistants home was built. Flowerpot Island light station was manned for 90 years, during that time light keeper’s and their families spent April through December every year on the island.

The lightstation was unmanned from 1987 on, and the abandoned buildings began to deteriorate, this became of growing concern until 1995 when an agreement was reached between the Friends of Fathom Five and the Canadian Coast Guard. A devoted group of volunteers began the long and labour intensive process of restoring the site in 1996 and have maintained the grounds ever since.

During the summer months those who visit the island may journey to the lightstation via Flowerpots trail system. The volunteers are usually there to greet you and sell you refreshments if you need one, there is no fee to enter the homes to explore although donations are welcome.

The Flowerpots are a type of sea stack, formed over many years as wind, rain, waves and ice hammered away at the cliff that once stood alongside the water’s edge, the softer rock eroded more quickly, leaving the harder rock remaining in the shape of our Flowerpots. If you look closely at the cliffs near the water, you will notice the beginning of new flowerpots currently being forged from the shoreline by the elements.

The Ottawa’s legend of how the Flowerpot rock formations came to be. This story was printed in the Owen Sound Sun Times in 1944.

“She was Shining Rainbow, Daughter of Waubesee, a chief of the Ottawa. He was Bounding Deer, a son of an enemy tribe of Chippewa. While the tribes were on peace terms for a season, the two met at a camp on the mouth of the beautiful Saugeen River at Southampton. There Bounding Deer brought Shining Rainbow dainty birch bark baskets filled with glossy blackberries and later, with her eyes upon him he far outshone his brother braves in the games which entertained the visitors. Soon she promised him that she would leave her people and go with him to the Saugeen. Their elopement was hastened because her mother, Spotted Turtle, had whispered to her that Waubesee had promised her to Swift Arrow, great warrior of their own band. Further, she said that the Chippewa would soon make war on Bounding Deer’s People.

So one night in the Moon of Strawberries (June), Bounding Deer pushed his canoe away for the last time from the flat rock that had been their trysting place for a long time. The fact that it was the last time did not worry him for in the centre of this graceful canoe sat Shining Rainbow and she was leaving her people forever.

Out on the lake they moved as the canoe slipped like a slim, swift bird through the waters, for pursuit was expected. For hours Bounding Deer’s paddle rose and turned in the moonlight, and when the moon had made the shadows short, they were within sight of Manitoueses. This was a sacred island off the mainland of the long-point-juts-out-into-Lake Huron, as the Indians called the Bruce Peninsula. This was the home of the lesser devils and the Little Spirit, and of a thunder bird egg. No Indian who had set foot on this island ever returned. It was shunned by all, and Bounding Deer, though glad to see the island for it told him that he was nearing home, instinctively drew his course away from it. Scarcely had he done so when a thrill of horror ran through him, for Shinning Rainbow was calling “Look! Look!” and looking, he saw, far behind, three large canoes – and the moonlight gleamed on twenty paddles!

What chance had the frightened fugitives? Bounding Deer knew only too well that they had none. Shining Rainbow knew it too. She offered to throw herself over the side of the canoe and swim back to meet her fate, allowing her lover to escape, but he would not listen to her.

“It might be that the Little Spirit would have more pity on us than your brothers” he suggested. Shining Rainbow agreed, so when they saw that their pursuers would not fail to take them, they turned straight to the shore. Shining Rainbow’s brothers, who really loved her, saw with horror what was planned. They tried to call to the desperate pair and the big canoes flashed through the water in a last minute effort, but the solitary canoe was not in the shadow of the headland of the island, and they were too late. No sooner had the bow of Bounding Deer’s canoe touched the shore, the watchers in the other canoes felt the waves rise in billows as the result of a mighty upheaval, and their ears were deafened by a loud crash. When the canoes were steadied again, it could be seen that the island had split in two! There on the shore were the petrified figures of the two they had followed. The Little Spirit had once again spoken to his people.

Many visitors like to bring lunch with them and have a picnic on the island. There is a picnic shelter on the shoreline near Beachy Cove and picnic tables at the lightstation. If seating is not of concern, eating lunch on the shoreline near the flowerpots is a lovely scenic option as well. Tap water is not available on the island so make sure to pack your own. During the summer months drinks and snacks may be available at the lightstation.

Taking a dip in the refreshing water of Georgian Bay is a popular activity for those visiting Flowerpot Island. Common areas for swimming and snorkeling include the picnic area by Beachy Cove and at the flowerpots. Remember to be careful as the shoreline is rocky, the water is cold, and there are deep drop-offs not far from shore. It is important to note that there are no sand beaches on the island so you may want to bring water shoes with you. Also, you may change into swimsuits in the washrooms at Beachy Cove.

There are 6 campsites located near Beachy Cove.  Pre-registration with Parks Canada is required . To inquire further or make a reservation, call (519) 596-2233 or stop at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Tobermory.

Bruce Anchor Cruises will transport campers, carrying a modest amount of gear, to the island.  Campers must select a departure time after 4:00pm on check in day and a return departure from Flowerpot Island before 12:00pm on the day of check out.

Campers must register and pay all of their park fees at the Visitor Centre and present to Bruce Anchor Cruises staff before transportation to Flowerpot Island is permitted.
