Los Angeles punk icons (and honorary Australians) The Bronx have announced their return to the country, plotting their first tour Down Under since 2018.
Last in the country over three years ago, a lot has happened for The Bronx since then. While COVID saw them sidelined almost completely throughout 2020, the group not only released a new record as their Mariachi El Bronx alter egos last year, but followed things up with their sixth self-titled effort ( Bronx VI , for those wondering) just a few months ago.
Now, as the world slowly continues to open up, and with live shows once again finding themselves more prevalent following years on hold, The Bronx have announced their return to the country, plotting an Australian tour for mid-2022.
Kicking things off in Perth on May 17th, the group will visit Adelaide, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Geelong, before heading across the ditch for shows in Wellington and Auckland.
Joining The Bronx on their highly anticipated return to Australia is West London five-piece Chubby and the Gang, who – after forming in 2019 by members of a number of UK hardcore bands – will be making their first visit to Australia.
Tickets to The Bronx’s upcoming tour go on sale from 10am, Friday, December 17th, while a Live Nation pre-sale kicks off at 12pm on Wednesday, December 15th.

ABOUT CIVIC:
The band recently wrapped an incredible run of shows in the UK at this year’s The Great Escape Festival as well as this past Spring’s US debut at SXSW 2023 that had the Austin Chronicle declaring, “CIVIC’s Tough Sound Confirms Aussie Punk Supremacy,” had Minneapolis’ The Current writing, “…CIVIC are a force on the stage…” and Philadelphia’s Magnet stating, “If there were better bands than CIVIC at SXSW this year, we didn’t hear them.” CIVIC did not disappoint those in attendance, creating a visceral, unforgettable experience with their energetic and intense sets led by the always engaging frontman Jim McCullough.
One of the most exhilarating bands to emerge in recent years, CIVIC have reimagined the reckless intensity of proto-punk for an era of endless uncertainty. Their sophomore full-length Taken By Force – an immersive and emotionally arresting body of work – follows their critically acclaimed 2021 debut LP Future Forecast . The Melbourne-based band offers up a barrage of songs matching their frenetic sound with both self-aware outpouring and incisive observation of the world around them. With the new album, CIVIC joyfully obliterate the line between furious catharsis and unbridled fun, introducing a vital new energy into today’s musical landscape. Look to experience the band live in the US for their first ever stateside tour this fall with all confirmed dates below and more to be announced!
CIVIC will be newly back from their debut US tour heading into The Bronx’s Australian tour dates. Their US tour includes playing Gonerfest (Memphis, TN * SOLD OUT) & Levitation (Austin, TX) and headline dates in all major markets.
CIVIC’s album bio can be found here: https://www.civicivic.com/bio
Josh Scogin kickstarted his small band with the big sound in 2013, naming the two-man outfit he modestly undersells as “a little rock, a little blues, a little hardcore” after his father’s old Camaro. And there’s a muscle car-sized rumble beneath the hood of what the Atlanta, Georgia native and his percussive partner-in-crime, Nikko Yamada, unleash with an array of guitar, bass, drums, keys, and pedals, careening between swinging barnburners, wild haymakers, and moody atmosphere.
The passion, the hunger, the good humor, it all connects with diverse crowds. Deliciously stripped down and vibrant, ’68 excels in intimate environments, to be sure, but is no less unignorable on giant festival stages or on the road with Bring Me The Horizon, Stone Sour, Beartooth, Avatar, August Burns Red, The Amity Affliction, and Underoath, where they’ve earned new converts every day.
In Humor and Sadness, the first album by ’68, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard New Artist Chart. Two Parts Viper followed in 2017. Grammy-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice In Chains) became a believer after just a few songs of a ’68 set. On ‘Give One Take One’, crafted with Raskulinecz in Nashville, the band’s high intensity bombast threatens but never swallows the underlying groove. - Ryan J Downey

The Bronx are bringing their 20th anniversary tour to Australia
- X (formerly Twitter)
Fans of Californian party punks The Bronx have no doubt been enviously watching footage of the band's mammoth 20th anniversary celebrations over the past few months.
Thankfully, their unabashed love of Australia meant we knew it was a matter of when, not if, they would be bringing the show down here. Today, they've locked the dates and venues for their return, with five wild nights scheduled for this November.
The Bronx stormed into our lives with their debut album in 2003. We'd assumed its wild and pummelling brand of punk rock would work brilliantly on the live stage and it wasn't long before that was confirmed as the band made the first of many Australian visits early in 2004.
Since then, the band have given us six albums (they're all called The Bronx ) as well as a couple as Mariachi El Bronx, and brought their breakneck punk rock power to sweaty little clubs, massive festival stages and everything in between.
On their forthcoming tour, The Bronx will have Melburnian garage rock kings Civic holding down main support duties. Their two recent LPs are essential works for fans of classic Australian punk rock, as the band refresh the grimy, surfy style for the modern day.
Also on board are '68, an Atlantan duo led by frontman Josh Scogin who are described as "a little rock, a little blues, a little hardcore". It'll be their first time on our shores since 2017, so we recommend getting there early (and wearing earplugs) to experience their force.
Catch The Bronx playing the following shows. Tickets are on sale from 10am Friday 28 July.
Friday 17 November – Northcote Theatre, Melbourne / Kulin Nation
Saturday 18 November – The Triffid, Brisbane / Jagera/Turrbal
Sunday 19 November – Metro Theatre, Sydney / Gadigal
Tuesday 21 November – The Gov, Adelaide / Kaurna
Wednesday 22 November – Magnet House, Perth / Whadjuk Noongar

The band’s lineup includes the charismatic Matt Caughthran on vocals, guitarists Joby J. Ford and Ken Horne, bassist Brad Magers, and powerhouse drummer Joey Castillo.
Joining The Bronx on this electrifying journey is Civic, fresh off their successful US tour. Civic has been garnering praise and admiration for their fierce proto-punk sound. Led by the captivating frontman, Jim McCullough, Civic’s energetic and intense performances have left audiences awestruck.
With their latest album, Taken By Force, the band delves into emotions while navigating the uncertainties of our times. Civic’s presence on stage is an experience that lingers long after the last note.
Completing this powerhouse lineup is ’68, a two-man outfit hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Fronted by the talented Josh Scogin, ’68’s unique blend of rock, blues, and hardcore creates an explosive musical concoction. Their energetic live shows, which range from intimate settings to massive festival stages, have won them a devoted fanbase worldwide.

Their 2021 album, The Bronx VI , debuted at #16 on the ARIA Albums Chart in August 2021, an impressive feat for a band that’s been around so long.
Over the band's illustrious career, they've released six original albums and three under their alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. They have become known for their unique reflection of anguish and emotion, wrapped in a hard-hitting catchy rock aesthetic.
In 2013, Kill Your Stereo gave a four-star review to The Bronx IV . Ten years after their first self-titled album, we found that it was “raw, aggressive, and – besides some lyrical ambiguity – straightforward. With its slight musical divergence adding character and depth rather than alienating longtime listeners, the band have achieved a happy medium between growth and familiarity.
“The Bronx’s IV is captivating from start to finish, showcasing everything the band excel at. The record’s twelve tracks are powerful in their simplicity, and a decade into their musical career, The Bronx show no signs of slowing down.”

Californian punk rock band THE BRONX have today announced their return to Australia in November 2023
Californian punk rock band THE BRONX have today announced their return to Australia in November 2023 in celebration of the 20 th anniversary of their first album The Bronx (I) . They will be joined by special guests CIVIC (Aus) and ’68 (USA) at Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre, Brisbane’s Triffid, Sydney’s Metro Theatre, Adelaide’s The Gov and Perth’s Magnet House.
ABOUT THE BRONX:
The Bronx formed in 2002, releasing their self-titled debut album the following year. Over the Los Angeles-based band’s 21 year career, The band has released six original albums as The Bronx, and three albums under their alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. Both iterations of the legendary SoCal outfit have been hailed for harnessing the “unleashed cries of youthful blue-collar anguish” (Los Angeles Times), and for writing “hard-hitting and catchy hard rock tracks” (Loudwire). The Bronx is Matt Caughthran (vocals), Joby J. Ford (guitar), Ken Horne (guitar), Brad Magers (bass) and Joey Castillo (drums).
ABOUT ‘68:
– Ryan J Downey

The Bronx to Celebrate Their Debut Album on 2023 Australian Tour
Californian punk veterans The Bronx will head to Australia in November this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album, The Bronx (I). The band will play Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre on Friday, 17th November, followed by the Triffid in Brisbane, Sydney’s Metro Theatre, Adelaide’s The Gov, and finally Magnet House in Perth on Wednesday, 22nd November.
The Bronx will be joined at all dates by Melbourne five-piece CIVIC – who have just returned from a string of UK shows – and Atlanta duo ’68 . See the full rundown of dates and ticketing details below.
The Bronx: ‘False Alarm’
The band released their debut self-titled album in 2003, the first of five self-titled records that they would release. Their latest full-length landed in 2021, Bronx VI, featuring cuts like ‘White Shadow’, ‘Superbloom’, and ‘Curb Feelers’. They have deviated from the self-titled route over the years, releasing V in 2017 and Dead Tracks Vol 1 & 2 in 2019 – and by releasing albums as their side project Mariachi El Bronx .
No strangers to our shores, the band were last in Australia for a tour in 2022 , which followed their previous tour in 2018 when they circled the country with Private Function and High Tension.
“With Bronx I , we were crazy, figuring everything out, going nuts, having a good time,” Matt Caughthran told Music Feeds in 2018 . “By Bronx II , we’d become real musicians, going for that major label goal. Bronx III, we’re depressed, we’re broke. Bronx IV, you know, the rocky comeback – Bronx V it was like, okay we’re still here, still motivated.”
“I still love playing those songs, I don’t piss on that at all,” Caughthran continued. “We’re not one of those bands who are mad at people who like one record over another. It’s cool. I’m super stoked that people… still give a shit about that record.”
The Bronx 2023 Australian Tour Dates
Friday, 17th November – Northcote Theatre, Melbourne
Saturday, 18th November – Triffid, Brisbane
Sunday, 19th November – Meto Theatre, Sydney
Tuesday, 21st November – The Gov, Adelaide
Wednesday, 22nd November – Magnet House, Perth
Tickets will go on sale Friday, 28th July via Live Nation . Head to Live Nation for information on pre-sale access.

Long-standing hardcore-punks, The Bronx, hail from Los Angeles, California, US, still held in high regard in the American punk scene after over ten years in the game.
Formed in 2002, the band met in Los Angeles, US, featuring Joby J, Ford (guitars), Jorma Vik (drums), Matt Caughthran (vocals) and James Tweedy (bass guitar/backing vocals). Tweedy let the band in 2007, replaced by Brad Magers and also joined by new guitarist, Ken Horne. Right off the bat, The Bronx came out swinging with their hardcore punk sound full of bravado and swagger. After only 12 live performances, they were offered a record deal with Island/Def Jam, ye The Bronx continued to release music on their own label, White Drugs.
After several demos, The Bronx began work on their debut album in 2003, utilising the talent of Guns ’n’ Roses guitarist, Gilby Clarke, as producer. The result was their self-titled release on the label, Ferret Records. Three years later, their second effort, also self-titled, arrived on Island Records. Through relentless touring alongside the likes of Priestess, the Riverboat Gamblers and Wires on Fire, The Bronx made a strong name for themselves through their energetic and incendiary live performances. Alongside The Bronx, Joby J. Ford and Matt Caughthran also featured in the side project, The Drips, who have enjoyed continuing success alongside their original project.
For their third album, “The Bronx III,” the band left Island Records, releasing instead on Original Signal Recordings. Following a successful acoustic set, the members of The Bronx decided to create a mariachi-style, alter ego band, Mariachi el Bronx, who released their first recording in 2009. The band have subsequently released three albums under this moniker, all received with critical acclaim. In 2013, they returned as The Bronx, offering the triumphant “IV,`’ which had a distinct hard rock sound that moved away from their earlier, punk driven sound.
Live reviews
The first time MonkHammer caught The Bronx some 12 years ago, frontman Matt Caughthran spent roughly 0.3 seconds on stage before leaping headfirst into the crowd to conduct the rest of the show from the eye of a continually whirling hurricane of beer, sweat and elbows. The second time, at a strip club/pub in the arse-end of London, the show ended with him casually perched on a shelf above the entrance, slightly confused as to how he got there, and largely unable to return to the stage without the assistance of the crowd. These days, he is far more inclined to stay front and centre with his bandmates, dancing like only he can, gibbon slamming in his own little one-man moshpit, but by no means does this diminish the chaos he commands, and tonight, The Bronx are on fire.
Whether pumped to the max following yesterday's trip to Download; feeling at home in the uncharacteristic Californian sun that has blessed us today; or simply keen to get off stage and celebrate guitarist Joby J Ford's daughter's 11th birthday following an impromptu crowd-sung Happy Birthday, the band are on exceptional form tonight and often in double time, blasting through the likes of History's Stranglers and Ribcage at a simply ludicrous pace. When the penny drops that it's not a "grizzled as fuck" David Hidalgo Jr playing drums (not our words!), but former QOTSA sticksman and human thunderstorm Joey Castillo, it suddenly makes a lot more sense.
From start to finish, pints fly across the room, bodies follow, and grinning sun-burnt faces emerge from the darkness of the pit at regular intervals, wetter than an otter's pocket and twice as smelly, but when the riff to Knifeman kicks in, it's a truly terrifying spectacle, in the best possible sense. It's as if the floor has been electrified, making literally everyone in the venue shake their stuff, and it's a reaction that brings out the old Matt, who wades through the huddled throng to perform the second half from atop a stair railing midway through the crowd, of which 100% is entranced.
But what strikes most tonight is how enormous that new album sounds. For a band that has historically fallen squarely in the "thrives in a dive" category, occasionally failing to command bigger support stages in quite the way one hoped, tracks like Two Birds and Side Effects sound absolutely vast, filling hearts and ears with the power of a thousand Foo Fighters. As a result, and openly acknowledging this stadium-ready aura, guitarist Ken Horne is given more opportunity than ever before to peel out a few Slash-worthy solos, each one long enough to impress, but short enough to retain the evening's momentum, giving everything a more professional, ready-to-step-it-up feel. While classics such as Heart Attack American and Shitty Future will always provoke bedlam, it's these more recent, dare we say it commercial, cuts that really slam home tonight and prove just why this band are held in such high esteem. Could 2018 be the year hardcore goes full arena? On showings like this, don't count against it. Sublime.

It’s understandable for the term “heavy music” to conjure up images of acrobatic guitar solos and time signatures that a super computer couldn’t handle. So much heavy music throughout rock history has a pronounced technical edge to it, from Zeppelin through to Maiden, from Pantera through to Mastodon. Some of these sounds need a master’s degree in engineering to decode before one has a hope in hell of enjoying it. However, some bands don’t need any of that. Some bands can pack a punch that could level a skyscraper with power chords and passion alone, and no other band sums up this approach quite as perfectly as Los Angeles’ hardcore heroes The Bronx. However, as heavy as it might get, The Bronx are also living proof that there can be a vast difference between heavy and joyless. The songs might burst your eardrums and if one is not careful, the pit might leave a lasting mark, but the bands firebrand of a frontman Matt Caughthran makes sure that the atmosphere is never anything other than joyous and inclusive. All this isn’t even taking into account how tight and almost telepathic the whole band is at pummelling out their brand of holler-along punk rock classics. They alone would make The Bronx a live act few could rival, however, with the other aspects? They’re truly unmissable.
Can't say enough good stuff about this - The Bronx tore it up from the first song to the last.
Musically tight as always and singer Matt is something else - sang almost the entire show from the pit and never missed a beat, even when he was crowd surfing.
Brilliant crowd too in a great venue - can't beat a dingy wee club for a punk gig and the punters definitely played their part.
Special mention to bouncer Matty Jnr - in the pit to watch over Matt, pretty much ended up joining in the chaos. Good lad!
Easily 5 stars for this one.
Incredible show.... Never seen energy like it, oslo in Hackney was a perfect venue. .. Not too small and not too big, the crowd were packed together like sardines only cushioned by the many hipster beards on show! The bronx have been around for years but they still have all the same energy as before.... If you have never seen them, then go, I've seen hundreds of Gigs and left this one thinking it was the best ever!
The Bronx were awesome and full of energy as always! Matt continued his tradition of coming into the crowd and getting rowdy with us in the pit. His energy and passion for music is different from any frontman I’ve seen in my 20 plus years of going to shows. Thanks to The Bronx for making rock n’ roll fun!
Far and away the best band I have ever seen live. There are few performers out there who get the crowd as involved as the lead singer Matt Caughthran does. It is truly incredible.
I will keep going to as many of their shows as I possibly can.... and you should too.
What a band and what a front man! Awesome performance with a tonne of energy. I reckon the vocals needed turning up a bit though. Sound was a lot better when they were in the smaller room upstairs at the 02. Cant wait to see them again.
Amazing. Per usual and as always. Matt spent the last 20 minutes in the crowd raising hell and getting the crowd hyped. My only complaint is that the Granada's sound system can't support how loud they play.
Fucking amazing!Matt Caughthran was a man of Chaos. Great Show! Rivaled Skinny Puppy / Manson and Iggy. Band was Tight! So clad I pursue excellence and am rewarded once in a While!
