To kick it off, Visit California’s President and CEO, Caroline Beteta, held a press conference at LAX on May 4, 2023, where she revealed the numbers behind the state’s tourism revival. Statewide, visitor spending reached $134.4 billion in 2022. Tourism jobs (1.1 million) and state and local taxes paid by visitors ($11.9 billion) also reached more than 90% of pre-pandemic levels in 2022.

In addition to the LAX event, Visit California executives are fanning out across the state and country giving speeches to the following groups in May:

  • Ventura X Games Press Conference, May 3, 2023
  • California Welcome Center Open House, Anderson, May 3, 2023
  • UpStateCA Tourism Summit, May 4, 2023

New research from Visit California shows Californians see tourism as a net positive in their communities. A majority of Californians believe tourism creates a better quality of life in their region and that the benefits of tourism outweigh the problems. More than 70% say tourism generates local business opportunities and provides jobs to local residents. Visit California's new tourism workforce video series showcases first hand experiences of Californians finding rewarding opportunities in travel.

The Travel Matters site  was updated with the latest numbers to demonstrate the economic impact travel and tourism has on the state. The site reaches decision-makers at state and local levels to highlight how travel is absolutely critical for California.

This California Tourism Month, showcase the power of travel with California's political and civic leaders. A strong tourism industry continues to drive California’s economy and workforce forward.

Here's how:

  • Adapt the official toolkit to spread the word online and with the media.
  • From May 7-13, join in U.S. Travel’s National Travel and Tourism Week with an additional #TravelForward tag.
  • Travel, shop and dine in the state. Your tourism dollars help businesses recover faster. Don’t forget to post about these experiences with the #CATourism tag!
  • Contact your local representatives to let them know that the state cannot fully recover until the tourism industry — and the spending, jobs and tax revenue it provides — fully recovers. For example, Visit California placed 2,000 California Tourism Month-branded coffee cups, napkins, and sleeves in the state legislature's office café to put the message right in front of them.

Construction starting on $12 billion high-speed rail between SoCal, Las Vegas

The project is touted as the first true high-speed passenger rail line in the nation, designed to reach speeds of 186 mph.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) -- Construction is expected to begin Monday on a $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Southern California and Las Vegas.

Brightline West aims to lay 218 miles of new track between a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip and another new facility in Rancho Cucamonga. That trip usually takes well over three hours by car.

The company says its fully-electric train will take just over two hours each way.

Almost the full distance is to be built in the median of Interstate 15, with a station stop in the Victorville area.

Forecasts are for 11 million one-way passengers per year, or some 30,000 per day, with fares well below airline travel costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage.

In a statement, Brightline Holdings founder and Chairperson Wes Edens called the moment "the foundation for a new industry."

Brightline aims to link other U.S. cities that are too near to each other for flying between them to make sense and too far for people to drive the distance, Edens said.

The project is scheduled to be complete by the time Los Angeles hosts the Summer Olympics in 2028.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Monday will join Brightline leaders at the start of the construction in Vegas. Brightline received $6.5 billion in backing from the Biden administration, including a $3 billion grant from federal infrastructure funds and approval to sell another $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds. The company won federal authorization in 2020 to sell $1 billion in similar bonds.

The construction is expected to create jobs for many in Southern California.

"We're looking at thousands of jobs as a result of this and hundreds of millions of dollars of investments, and that impact is going to be felt for years to come," said Rancho Cucamonga City Manager John Gillison. "This project will have a big impact on California, and especially Southern California."

Other fast trains

The project is touted as the first true high-speed passenger rail line in the nation, designed to reach speeds of 186 mph (300 kph), comparable to Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains.

Florida-based Brightline Holdings already operates the Miami-to-Orlando line with trains reaching speeds up to 125 mph (200 kph). It launched service in 2018 and expanded service to Orlando International Airport last September. It offers 16 round-trips per day, with one-way tickets for the 235-mile (378-kilometer) distance costing about $80.

Other fast trains in the U.S. include Amtrak's Acela, which can top 150 mph (241 kph) while sharing tracks with freight and commuter service between Boston and Washington, D.C.

Ideas for connecting other U.S. cities with high-speed passenger trains have been floated in recent years, including Dallas to Houston; Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina; and Chicago to St. Louis. Most have faced delays.

In California, voters in 2008 approved a proposed 500-mile (805-kilometer) rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco, but the plan has been beset by rising costs and routing disputes. A 2022 business plan by the California High-Speed Rail Authority projected the cost had more than tripled to $105 billion.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ontario Supporting Local Cultural Tourism Events

$8.4 million investment will boost local economies and create good-paying jobs

Quick facts, additional resources.

HAMILTON — The Ontario government is investing more than $8 million over the next three years to support cultural tourism in communities across the province. $2.4 million of this funding will be provided this year through the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund (OCAF) to help 40 arts, heritage and cultural organizations develop, promote and present high-quality, high-profile events that strengthen local economies and create good-paying jobs.

“Ontario’s cultural tourism events and attractions provide residents and visitors alike with unique experiences that create lifelong memories,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “The investments that our government is making through OCAF will help to bring these one-of-a-kind events to life, boosting local businesses, creating good-paying jobs and enabling audiences of all ages to experience the best that Ontario has to offer.”

Minister Lumsden announced the funding today at Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, which received $60,000 to support its 50th anniversary season that runs from March 26 to June 16. Programming includes the world premiere production of Tom Wilson and Shaun Smyth’s “Beautiful Scars”, inspired by the book “Beautiful Scars: Steeltown Secrets, Mohawk Skywalkers and the Road Home” by Tom Wilson.

“We’re thankful to the Ontario government for the funding that it has provided to our organization through OCAF, which will enable us to expand our marketing efforts in our 50th season,” said Kelly Straughan, Executive Director of Theatre Aquarius. “We’ve assembled a world-class team led by Tom Wilson for the world premiere of his new musical Beautiful Scars, which has a deep connection to Hamilton. It’s a celebration of Indigenous identity that will resonate with theatregoers in the region and beyond.”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of OCAF, which has supported more than 900 events, festivals and exhibitions across Ontario since 1999 and attracted over 91 million attendees.

OCAF funds are provided as partially repayable loans, which enable even more projects to be supported. For every $1 that the Ontario government invests, $1.69 is in turn invested in cultural tourism.

“On behalf of the OCAF board, we thank the Ontario government for the support and confidence in this three-year renewal of the Fund,” said Mary E. Hofstetter, Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund Chair. “It will allow us to invest in more wonderful projects like the 50th anniversary of Theatre Aquarius and other great events happening across Ontario this spring, summer and fall.”

  • OCAF provides support to cultural tourism events that range in size from large art and music festivals to smaller events that celebrate local Ontario culture and heritage.
  • OCAF continues to accept applications for new events and offers applicants flexibility regarding project timing and scope. Please visit the OCAF website for more information on the organization and to view the full list of recipients.
