Best Ways to Contact the DVLA (Including Phone, Post and Email)

The DVLA is notoriously hard to get hold of and even then it’s difficult to find a direct route to talk to a real person. Ever wondered if you can email them or even walk into their Swansea office?

I got maddened by how difficult it is, so researched lots of ways on how you can contact the DVLA for your request.

I have learned a LOT about the fascinating and somewhat backward world of motor vehicle paperwork, including a ‘secret’ page the DVLA has that gets updated weekly, and it shows where you are in the application queue! (scroll down to my ‘tips to ease the frustration’ for that) – but I hope there are other things in this article that can help you out, too.

Covered in this Article:

When MUST you contact the DVLA?

If you’re anything like me, then it can be confusing to know when you need to contact the DVLA.

These reasons can include:

  • Informing the DVLA of a medical condition
  • Failing an eye test
  • Vehicle tax or a statutory off road notifications (SORN)
  • Number plates and log books
  •  Passing your driving test
  • Getting rid of your car
  • If you’ve sold, bought or transferred a vehicle

You can also contact the DVLA for general enquiries or complaints.

How do I notify the DVLA that I’ve scrapped my car?

If you decide to scrap your car, you must inform the DVLA that you have done so. If you do not inform the DVLA, then you may receive large fines. The DVLA will assume that you are still driving the car as you have not notified them otherwise.

This means you could get a fine and ticket for driving the vehicle with no tax. You can also get fined £1000 for not updating your vehicle’s details.

You can notify the DVLA about scrapping your car in a few ways.

notifying dvla via their website

Via website

The easiest way to contact the DVLA about scrapping your car if you have internet access is via their website . In order to do this, you need the name and address of the scrapyard, the vehicle registration number and the 11 digit vehicle reference from the latest log book (V5C).

Use the scrapyard or insurance company’s name as the trader you sold the vehicle to, even if you did not get any money for doing so.

Contacting the DVLA by post is still a viable option, especially for those who do not have great internet access.

All you have to do is fill out section 4 of your logbook and post it to the DVLA. If your car was manufactured before April 2019, fill out section 9.

The address is:

DVLA Swansea SA99 1BA

The DVLA should notify you with a confirmation letter within 4 weeks.

What if I don’t have my logbook?

It’s not uncommon to misplace or automatically destroy your logbook once your car has been scrapped. Don’t panic if you’ve done this, you can still notify the DVLA.

If you have the V5C written down, simply contact the DVLA via their website. If you don’t, write a letter to the DVLA at the address above and inform them that you have scrapped your car, but do not have the logbook. You must include your full name, address along with the name, address and VAT number of the scrapyard.

contacting dvla via phone

How do I phone the DVLA?

There are multiple phone numbers for the DVLA, each for different departments. For the quickest response time, call the relevant number during their business hours.

Are DVLA Numbers Free to Phone?

It is not free of charge to call the DVLA. The 0300 numbers are charged at around 9p a minute from landlines and 55p a minute from mobiles. This is why it’s often still better to write to them, slow as it is.

Can I talk to a real person at the DVLA?

A lot of the DVLA phone lines are automated, but to get through to a real person all you have to do is follow the automated steps. Listen to the automated voice and press the numbers on the keypad related to your enquiry, once you have done that you will be put through to a real person to speak with.

The phone lines tend to have long waiting lines, so be prepared to be put on hold before you reach someone.

sending message to dvla through email

Can I email the DVLA?

There is no specific email address for the DVLA, to contact them via email you must head to the government website and answer the questions related to your enquiry. You can contact them about vehicle, driver and welsh enquiries.

Once you have completed all the answers, you will have an option to fill in your information. Enter your full name, date of birth, address, email address and vehicle details. Then, it will give you an option to enter a question or concern along with any relevant attachments.

Once you’ve finished, click the green submit button. This will be sent to the DVLA and they will aim to get back to you via the email address you put in as soon as possible.

You will receive a confirmation email immediately. The response time can vary depending on your message, it can take several weeks. Remember to check your spam folder if you haven’t heard anything in a while!

Writing to the DVLA: What’s their address?

There are a few addresses for the DVLA, all of them located in Swansea. The address will be different depending on what your enquiry entails.

Is DVLA Swansea Freepost?

I thought I’d better answer this at the same time, since posting things is still one of the best options.

No, the DVLA Swansea address is not a Freepost address. You need a stamp if you send anything to them. Always put stamps on or pay the correct postage for your letter or else you’ll sadly delay things even more! Their address looks like a Freepost one, but it’s not.

Can You Visit DVLA Swansea in Person?

Recently I had to get a replacement V5 document from the DVLA. I bought a second-hand car that didn’t have the V5, so the only way I could get one is to request it from DVLA in Swansea. Their estimated time on this (at the time of writing) was six weeks.

We live in the West Country and it’s not that far to drive to Swansea. Therefore we wanted to know if you could go there in person to the DVLA’s actual office address and make the process faster.

Unfortunately, you can’t visit the DVLA in person in Swansea. They don’t have a “customer service” desk. The best thing they can do is put your letter in their internal mail, but then it would just be treated the same as if you’d posted it to them, so you’re not saving yourself any time.

If you want anything doing these days with licenses V5 or any other similar paperwork you’re going to have to do it digitally and it usually goes through Swansea. Frequently there are no other options.

Is There a DVLA Office Near Me?

I ought to mention that DVLA no longer has the little local offices that they used to have throughout the country. These were all closed down by the government in 2013.

This was my first thought because I’d heard that there used to be offices for the DVLA nationwide… But nope – there are no local walk-in services any more.

How do I get a DVLA check code?

If you need to share your driving record with a third party, you can contact the DVLA for a shareable check code . The easiest way to do this is online via the government website. You can also use this service to check your driving record, as mentioned above.

In order to complete this service and receive your code, you will need:

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your national insurance number
  • The postcode on your driving licence

Once you receive your code, it is valid for 21 days.

Other ways to get a check code

Applying online is not the only way to receive this code. There are multiple ways to do so.

Via GOV.uk Verify

To access your driving record or receive your code, apply via GOV.uk Verify .

Contact the department of driving records via telephone – 0300 083 0013.

Send a request form or a letter including the following information.

  • Date of birth
  • Driving licence number

Tips to Ease the Frustration of Waiting for the DVLA

If you’ve got this far, you’ll probably be feeling as frustrated as I did when I learned that there are very few ways to effectively contact the DVLA without waiting for a long time.

When researching this article, though, I found out a couple of things that might make the weight more bearable or at least get an idea of where you are in the queue.

1. Check Your Place in the Paperwork Queue

This one saved me a lot of bother when I was thinking of ringing them to chase up my application.

What many people don’t know is that on the official government website, the DVLA has a page that they constantly update saying which date they are dealing with at the moment. You can find it here.

Scroll down to “Processing Dates for Paper Applications” and you’ll see what they’re dealing with this week.

Therefore if you know which date you posted your documents you can see how far away they are dealing with yours. This helped me a lot because I knew I didn’t have to waste time chasing something that wasn’t even remotely near the front of the queue!

2. Chase Them if It’s Been 6+ Weeks

What is often hidden in the small print that you are entitled to chase DVLA if you haven’t heard anything back from them after 6 weeks – they hide this down at the bottom of their contact details but it is there!

You can use the link above to see if it’s been more than six weeks since your documents entered the queue, too.

3. Check if You Actually Need to Hear Back In Order to Drive

Many people don’t realise that you don’t need to hear back from the DVLA to continue using your car in certain situations. Here’s the official DVLA leaflet for all the scenarios where you can continue driving, even if your application is with them.

I hope this has helped you in the impatient wait to hear back from the DVLA. Unfortunately, it’s one of those situations where you can’t move things along, as you can with so many other businesses these days. Be patient, and good luck!

  • Click the ‘Next step’ button.
  • From there, you will be able to see the options on how to contact them regarding your inquiry. You can contact DVLA by phone , webchat , email , and post . Each inquiry type has a different contact detail.

If you’d like to contact the DVLA using the DVLA Contact Number Free 0300, refer to the table below.

The table lists the phone number for each concern and the department to call.

Check the office hours in order to know the best time to call.

Although calling by phone is a surefire way to get fast answers to your inquiry, sending an email is another option if you don’t have the means to call or if you want a black and white data of your inquiry.

Follow the steps mentioned above and check the email address details in Step 5.

You will be redirected to the email service for your inquiry category.

For your convenience, listed below are the email service tools for each inquiry.

You’ll need to select the correct type of inquiry since the email service tool of each inquiry has additional specific options that you’ll have to select.

The options you select are the information the tool needs in order to redirect you to the correct department email.

To use the email service links outline above, follow these steps:

  • After clicking the correct email service link above, select the options that correspond to your inquiry.
  • Click ‘Continue’.
  • After selecting all appropriate options, you will reach a page with a form.
  • Enter your personal details, including email address and full name.
  • Afterward, you will be given a reference number indicating that your application is complete.
  • Lastly, you should receive a confirmation email.
  • The page shows the summary of your inquiry, including the email address you entered and the options you selected.

Similar to contacting DVLA by email address, each type of inquiry has a designated Webchat link to handle the specific inquiry.

You can start chatting from Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 7 pm or on Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm. Keep in mind the chat is closed during public holidays.

Moreover, the webchat is only for inquiries, and not making payments or setting up or amending a direct debit.

To help you locate each Webchat link faster, I already made a list of links for your convenience.

If you opt to inquire by post, use the following addresses below when sending your mail.

Do check the correct UK Postcode  and how to properly write a postcode  in your mail.

Writing the incorrect postcode or address can cause delays in your inquiry, so be sure to double check the address before sending.

Do I need to contact the DVLA if I lost my driving license in the UK?

First of all, if you think it was stolen, report it to the police.

After losing your driving licence, it is important to notify the DVLA by applying to replace your licence through either of the three options: online application, by phone, or by post.

You can find additional details in the article about lost driving licence UK .

When Should I Contact DVLA?

If you recently applied for a service, it is best to wait for the maximum processing time to pass before contacting the DVLA.

For instance, the processing time for SORN confirmation by telephone is four weeks.

If four weeks have passed, then you should contact the DVLA and inquire about it.

Which medical conditions should I contact DVLA about?

You should report your medical condition to DVLA, especially if the condition affects your safety while driving. Keep in mind you will be fined up to £1,000 if you do not inform DVLA about it.

Check the list of medical conditions to report  before contacting the DVLA.

Hi Sharon, DVLA in the UK does have an email address that can be used to contact them for inquiries or assistance. The email address is:

[email protected]

However, it’s important to note that the DVLA advises against sending sensitive or confidential information via email, as it may not be secure. For certain types of inquiries or requests, it may be better to use the DVLA’s online services or to contact them by phone or post.

Dear sir The original residence permit has not been returned for more three months it was sent to DVAL

Hello Mohammad,

I think maybe you should contact DVAL to inquire about the status of your residence permit. They may be able to provide you with more information about the delay and an estimated timeline for when you can expect to receive your permit.

I had an an accident and engineering garage said is beyond repair, and the car is scrabbled how do I stop the road tax

Hello Raymond,

I’m sorry to hear about your accident and the condition of your car.

In the UK, to stop road tax on a vehicle that has been scrapped, you need to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) that the vehicle is no longer on the road.

You can do this by completing and sending a “Notification of Vehicle Arriva/Scrap/Sold to the Motor Trade” form to the DVLA. This form can be obtained from a Post Office or downloaded from the DVLA’s website.

You will need to provide the DVLA with details of the vehicle, such as the registration number and the date that it was scrapped. Once the DVLA receives this form, they will update their records and issue a refund for any full months of road tax that you have paid in advance. Please note I cannot provide official advice or guidance. It’s best to contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) directly for more detailed information.

I’ve been trying to contact DVLA for several months, but it’s been impossible to make contact. I tried to phone and waited for over 30 minutes, eventually spoke to a woman who told me she couldn’t help me. I’ve filled in two forms on-line but have received no reply. The email address provided by DVLA: [email protected] is not known, and my letters have been returned. Two weeks ago I sent a letter by post with a cheque for £25 for my log book, but have still heard nothing. I’ve read other complaints, and I think it is absolutely disgusting how you respond to customers sending them like me around in circles. I understand DVLA staff are still working from home, so I understand completely why nothing is being done. Maybe Supermarket staff and Bus Drivers could also work from home, and that would certainly make life easier for everyone. Regards John Mandley.

Hello John Mandley, I apologize for any frustration or inconvenience you’ve experienced in trying to contact the DVLA

Phone Contact: If you’re having difficulty reaching the DVLA by phone, try calling during non-peak hours, such as early morning or late afternoon, as wait times may be shorter. Alternatively, you can try different phone numbers listed on their website or explore any specific helpline options they may provide.

Online Form: Since you mentioned filling in forms online without receiving a reply, it’s possible that there may have been an issue with the submission or the response got lost. Consider resubmitting the forms, ensuring that all required fields are completed accurately. Look for any confirmation or reference numbers associated with the form submission and keep a record for future reference.

Email Correspondence: The email address you provided, [email protected] , seems to be incorrect or outdated. Double-check the DVLA website for the correct email contact information, as they may have updated their contact details. Consider sending an email to their official email address or using any contact forms available on their website.

Postal Correspondence: It’s concerning that your letter and cheque haven’t been acknowledged or processed yet. Unfortunately, postal delays can occur, especially during busy periods. To ensure your correspondence reaches the DVLA, consider using a recorded or tracked delivery service and keep a copy of the documents you send for your records.

Complaints and Escalations: If you’ve exhausted all normal channels of contact without receiving a satisfactory response, you may consider escalating the issue. Look for the DVLA’s official complaints procedure on their website and follow the instructions provided to file a formal complaint. This may prompt a review and a more timely response to your situation.

Remember that the DVLA’s operations may be affected by various factors. It’s always a good idea to remain patient and persistent in seeking resolution.

I submitted my BPR card with the provisional driving license application bud received the provisional driving licence since one month but couldn’t get my BRP card till today 17 October, 2023. Can I still be expecting it or what should I do. Thank you.

Hello KOLAWOLE SANUSI,

The delay in receiving your BRP card could be due to various reasons, such as processing times or issues with your application.

Here’s what you should consider doing:

Check Application Status: Visit the UK government’s official website or the service you used to apply for the Provisional Driving Licence and check the status of your BRP application. You might find information on the current status of your BRP card.

Contact UKVI: If there’s no update or you’re unsure about the status, it’s a good idea to contact UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). You can do this by calling the helpline or using the online contact form. They can provide you with more specific information about your BRP card’s status.

Collect from Post Office: In many cases, when you applied for your BRP card, you would have selected a Post Office location for card collection. Ensure you have received a collection notification, and if not, inquire with the Post Office.

Allow Time for Processing: Processing times can vary, and sometimes there are delays. Be patient and allow some additional time for your BRP card to arrive.

Notify DVLA: If you haven’t already done so, inform the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) of the delay in receiving your BRP card. They may be able to provide guidance on what to do next regarding your Provisional Driving Licence.

The DVLA has laid out the ways motorists can continue to drive when they do not hold a current driving licence - but warned them of the things they must not do to avoid breaking the law.

Section 88 of The Road Traffic Act 1988 may allow you to continue driving even though you do not hold a current driving licence.

This will be when you have applied to the DVLA to renew your licence, but the licence expires while your application is being processed.

READ MORE: DVLA warns drivers of 112 medical conditions they have to declare or face a £1,000 fine

But in order to continue driving under section 88, you must meet the following criteria...

  • Your doctor must have told you that you are fit to drive.
  • You have held a valid driving licence and only drive vehicles you have applied for on your current application and were entitled to drive on your previous licence.

The DVLA has received your correct and complete application within the last 12 months.

Your last licence was not revoked or refused for medical reasons.

You are not currently disqualified from driving by a court.

You were not disqualified as a high risk offender on or after June 1, 2013.

It is your responsibility to make sure you meet the Section 88 criteria at all times while driving prior to receiving your licence.

Vehicle registration is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom. This guide explains the process for registering different types of vehicles and the fees involved.

REGISTERING A CAR : As a rule you must register a car, and almost all other vehicles, any time you:

  • Buy a new or used car, truck, or motorbike.
  • Build a vehicle from scratch (e.g. a kit car).
  • Rebuild or modify a vehicle (e.g. an insurance write-off).
  • Import a vehicle into the United Kingdom .

In these circumstances you use specific forms for vehicle registration . You must send the filled in forms to the DVLA in Swansea. But, there are different forms to use depending on the situation.

In some cases the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency will inspect your vehicle. The purpose of a DVLA inspection is to:

  • Ensure the vehicle exists and see that it got built into a safe and complete automobile.
  • Check the log book (V5C vehicle registration certificate). They will want to confirm it got issued in your name as the registered keeper.
  • Update the DVLA data records due to any changes or alterations you may have made to the vehicle.

Note : DVLA will inform you by letter before carrying out the free vehicle inspection. There are several different motor trade registration schemes for importers, manufacturers, and VAT-registered traders.

Registering New and Used Vehicles

All new and second hand vehicles must follow DVLA road tax rules for the United Kingdom. That means they need taxing before they get used on public roads.

How to Register a New Vehicle

Most people buy a brand new car or motorbike from a dealer. In this case the dealer will make the registration of a new vehicle for you. You can carry out new vehicle registrations yourself if the dealer declines.

It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to get a V5C registration certificate (log book) after the application. But, you should contact the DVLA if the document does not arrive within 6 weeks.

How to Register a Used Vehicle with V5C

When the vehicle has a V5C registration certificate the seller has the legal responsibility to:

  • Complete section 6 on the V5C. This section refers to the ‘new keeper or new name/new address details’.
  • Sign the declaration part in section 8 (the buyer must sign here too).
  • Fill in the new details of section 10 ‘new keeper supplement’ and give it to the buyer. This section is also called the V5C/2.
  • Mail the completed V5C to the DVLA in Swansea.

The new owner should get a new V5C from DVLA within 4 weeks of them receiving the changed V5C from the seller. But, if it does not arrive within 4 weeks the buyer can:

  • Fill in the form V62 ‘ Application for a vehicle registration certificate ‘. This form is available as a download or from any large Post Office branch.
  • Send the V62 to DVLA along with the V5C/2 given by the seller. Failing to send in the V5C/2 means there will be a fee to pay.

How to Register a Used Vehicle without V5C

DVLA Advice : Buying a vehicle without a registration certificate (V5C) is a risk. As a rule do not do it!

What happens if you buy a vehicle without the V5C? In this case you should register it in your name using form V62. The title of the form is ‘Application for a vehicle registration certificate’ and there is a fee.

Checking Registration Certificate Details

It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to get an updated vehicle registration certificate. You must check all the details are accurate and correct. Return an incorrect certificate to DVLA after making the relevant changes. Allow another four (4) weeks for them to send it back to you.

Medical driving licence applications (paper applications)

If you have applied for your first driving licence, or to renew or replace your current driving licence and you have declared a medical condition , this will take longer. When considering an application to issue a driving licence, we aim to make a decision as quickly as possible but where we require additional information from a driver’s doctor or the driver themselves, we are wholly reliant on receiving this information before a decision can be made.

Driving while an application is with DVLA

Please remember that by law, you must make sure that you always meet the medical standards for fitness to drive when driving. Find more information about driving with a medical condition .

If your application (including if you have declared a medical condition) has been sent to DVLA you may be able to continue to drive while we are processing your application, subject to meeting certain criteria. This applies to most types of applications so check the criteria to see if you may be able to continue driving by reading the guidance leaflet ‘Can I drive while my application is with DVLA?’ .

Identity documents

If you need to include proof of identity with your application, make sure you only send in what is required and that you check requirements on GOV.UK before you post your application.
