Get a glimpse of what your graduate school experience could look like during this 75-minute tour for enrolled and prospective graduate school students. The UNC Visitors Center graduate student walking tour is hosted by a current graduate student who introduces Carolina history, traditions and hallmarks as well as some of the University’s current endeavors in research, innovation and public service. Included is information related to graduate student life at UNC as well as the many ways The Graduate School supports graduate and professional students from admission to graduation. Because this tour does not visit graduate departments, you may contact the graduate and professional schools you are interested in with questions or requests to meet with professors or advisors. Check the department’s website for the appropriate program contact.

The best way to view monuments is, of course, in person. But some significant commemorative landscapes no longer exist and so it is impossible to experience them firsthand. These vanished landscapes were created and organized as expressions of ideas about history, patriotism, and commemoration that are often different from those of present-day North Carolina. Another reason these vanished landscapes are interesting is because earlier generations of visitors to North Carolina's monuments often moved through landscapes different than those that exist at the same sites today.

Guilford Courthouse Virtual Tours

Three virtual tours of the Guilford Courthouse Battle site, one of the most significant commemorative landscapes in North Carolina, illustrate many important themes in the history of commemoration. Together, the three tours highlight the myriad ways in which change transforms and alters commemorative sites that were intended to be timeless.

Raleigh Virtual Tours

This set of interactive maps highlights the changes around the most symbolically significant commemorative space in the state – the State Capitol. Between 1880 and 1920, the Capitol grounds became dotted with monuments. At the same time, the area around the Capitol underwent rapid development. Sanborn ® Fire Insurance maps, which provide a wonderfully detailed inventory of buildings around the Capitol, enable us to see clearly the changes in the built environment. Furthermore, the geographic placement of contemporary postcards and photographs onto the maps provides us with some idea of how contemporaries saw and experienced the commemorative landscape of the Capitol.

Black and Carolina Blue Tour site highlights Black History at UNC-Chapel Hill

  For more than 20 years, the Black and Blue Tour has introduced students and visitors to local histories of slavery, racism, memorialization and activism at UNC-Chapel Hill. Now, the University Libraries has released a revised Black and Carolina Blue Tour website , with updated and expanded entries for each tour stop.

The new site is part of the Library’s efforts to collect, preserve and share campus history.

“The Black and Carolina Blue Tour website is an essential supplement to other campus history sources,” said University Archivist Nicholas Graham. “It’s impossible to truly understand the history of UNC-Chapel Hill without learning about slavery, white supremacy and Black resistance.”

The original tour was created as a walking tour of key sites connected with Black History at Carolina and Chapel Hill. The Library developed a companion virtual exhibit, including tour excerpts and additional information.

Work to revise the tour website began in 2020 as part of efforts to evaluate and revise campus history materials offered by the University Libraries.

“So much of what we know about campus history is thanks to the primary source materials at Wilson Library and the work of the library and archives staff at Carolina,” said vice provost for University libraries and University librarian María R. Estorino. “The new tour site is one way we can make this history more approachable and accessible for our entire community.”

The updated content was developed by Graham and NC Research and Instructional Librarian Sarah Carrier, as well as graduate assistant Allison Ruvidich. The project received a University Libraries IDEA Action grant which provided funding to work with community stakeholders who reviewed the first draft of the revised site and provided feedback and suggestions.

“Students were really the inspiration for this work,” said Graham. “We’d heard from many students over the years who expressed frustration that information about campus history — especially Black history — was not more readily accessible.”

“The tour’s content, history and perspective are imperative for telling the story of UNC-Chapel Hill, but its online presence needed updating,” added Carrier. “The University Libraries had an opportunity to replace outdated online content with something fresh and current and to ensure the longevity of the content as an ongoing Library project.”

The revised website uses a new design and includes expanded entries with additional information, references and suggestions for further reading.

“We provided vetted citations for further research so that the online tour can be a source of quality information, explained Carrier. “We wanted to explicitly connect sources from the tour back to primary sources and model ways of doing research of this nature.”

Even with all of this new information, the website is not intended to replace the walking tour but to serve as a basic introduction, reference source and starting place for research and discovery.

“Our goal is to not only inform and answer questions about Carolina’s history but also to inspire new work and new thinking about what engaging with our institution’s history can look like,” said Carrier.

Making a Difference on Capitol Hill

In the halls of Capitol Hill, among the throng of suits and ties, one Ohioan stands out - Benjamin Mays, a legislative correspondent for Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley. Hailing from Middletown, Ohio, Benjamin found his calling in the heart of Washington, D.C., but his journey to the nation's capital began with a pivotal visit to Cedarville University. 

As a high school senior, Benjamin stepped onto Cedarville's campus, where he first learned about the D.C. Semester program. This unique opportunity, offering a blend of classroom learning and real-world experience in politics, sealed his decision to pursue political science at Cedarville. 

Inspired by Rep. Davidson's Christian values guiding his legislative work, Benjamin recognized the vital role of faith in shaping political decisions. Armed with this perspective, he graduated with a degree in political science and joined Sen. Grassley's office, determined to make a difference. 

For Benjamin, government service is more than just a career - it's a calling to embody Christian principles in the political arena. With a firm belief that God's presence is needed now more than ever in policy-making, he intends to stay in public service as long as he can, advocating for integrity and compassion in governance.
