If you’re asking yourself ‘Is Zwolle worth visiting?’, then I can only say YES. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel (Zwolle is not found in Holland) and whether you have 24 hours to spend in Zwolle, or just a few hours, this is one of the must do’s in Zwolle. Discover everything from beautiful landmarks and monuments in Zwolle to hidden gems and the most beautiful streets in Zwolle. And from the best parks in Zwolle to the best sights to see in Zwolle city centre.

This Zwolle walking tour will be guiding you to the best unusual places in Zwolle and will show you some of the best activities to do in Zwolle when you travel to this Dutch town. Enjoy the sightseeing in Zwolle and learn why you must visit Zwolle, The Netherlands.

This self- guided and free walking route for Zwolle is around  6 kilometres  but can be expanded with some additional places to see in Zwolle to roughly 10 kilometres. Those extensions can be found at the end of this Zwolle city blog.

We are starting our free walking tour in Zwolle at  Ossenmarkt 10 . The full name of this basilica is the Basiliek Van Onze Lieve Vrouw Tenhemelopneming. This basilica in Zwolle was built from 1394 and restored in the 19th century. The building of this church in Zwolle took place in four different phases. From 1394 until 1399 the choir was built. After that, the transept and the Eastern Bay of the ship were built which finished in 1417. Construction of the oldest church in Zwolle was then resumed until 1452, and the nave of the church was completed in 1454.

From 1454 until 1463 the tower was built, which is nicknamed the ‘peperbus’ or pepper pot for the simple reason that it looks like one. However, back in that time, the tower didn’t have the little hat it has nowadays. The tower of the Grote Kerk in Zwolle (another church) burnt down in 1669. And people wanted a new tower that people would recognize as Zwolle. The part of the tower that makes it look like a pepper pot, the onion-shaped hat, dates back to 1727. In 1815, the top part of the tower in Zwolle was destroyed in a fire, but restored shortly after.

The entire tower is 75 metres high and used to be the tallest building in Zwolle, but an office building from the ABN Amro Bank at 96 metres high was opened in 2006.

Between 1580 and 1810 the basilica wasn’t in use as a church, but after it was given to the Roman Catholics in 1809, the church was restored and in use in 1811. Pope John Paul II granted the church the honour of becoming a basilica on the 18th of October 1999.

My most favourite part about this basilica in Zwolle is that you can visit it and climb a portion of its tower. You can climb it to 51 metres, or 236 steps. This way, you will see the most beautiful view of Zwolle and its surroundings. If it’s not opened yet when you are walking through Zwolle, then just come back here by the end of your Zwolle walking tour. Trust me when I say that the view is more than worth it.  Find the opening times of this basilica in Zwolle here.

Fun fact about this basilica in Zwolle: The carillon of the Peperbus tower has 51 bells, which makes it one of the most extensive carillons in The Netherlands.

city tour zwolle

From admiring this beautiful monument in Zwolle, we are headed to  Korte   Kamperstraat  and then onwards to  Melkmarkt 53 . This building is called ‘Het Vrouwenhuis’, or the women’s house. Around 1680 it was the house of Pieter Soury, mayor of Zwolle, and Aleijda Wolfsen who was a painter. They got fifteen children and because of that their home was too small. So that bought a house that was located on the back of the other house and connected these two. In 1706 the building was sold by the inheritors to the wealthy Aleida Greve and her sisters. Aleida died in 1742.

In her testament, it said that after she died, the building had to be changed into a retirement home for women who were members of the Dutch reformed church. After 250 years the last inhabitant of the women’s retirements home in Zwolle left in 1984. The ground floor has been turned into a museum where you can see everything that made this house so special. From interiors that date back to the 17th century to a room from 1980. The Vrouwenhuis museum in Zwolle can only be visited in a group and on appointment.

Up next we have  Melkmarkt 41 . This 16th-century regents house is called the ‘Drostenhuis’. The house was built in around 1551 on assignment by Lord Engelbert van Ensse who had several functions, and one of them was the ‘Drost of Drenthe’, that’s why the house is called the Drostenhuis. A ‘drost’ was a sort of government official that managed and was responsible for protecting a particular area of land. Engelbert van Ensse was a very wealthy man, a catholic and a fiduciary from influential royals such as the Habsburgs and Phillip II. He was also a captain in the Spanish army. The son and grandson became the owner of the house after Engelbert died.

The building is currently the home of the Stedelijk Museum Zwolle. Here you can explore period rooms that date back to the Regent’s time and Dutch Golden Age as well as artworks.

Then we will walk to  Steenstraat ,  Nieuwstraat ,  Roggenstraat ,  Bitterstraat ,  A Plein ,  Waterstraat  and  Buitenkant  to end up at  Achter de Broeren 1 .

Here you can find the most famous – former- church in Zwolle: Broerenkerk. It was founded in 1465 as a Dominican monastery church. The monastery was closed in 1580, and the church was used for protestant worship services from 1640. The Jewish community in Zwolle used parts of the nearby monastery as a synagogue from around 1760. The final monastery church was closed after 340 years of protestant worship services in 1983. After the closing, this church was restored for five years, and during the restoration, they found beautiful ceiling frescos.

From 1988 until 2010 this building was used as an exhibition space as well as an event location. Since 2005, the Broerenkerk was slowly changed into a bookstore, cafe and cultural centre in one. In 2013 one of the most beautiful bookshops in The Netherlands was opened in Zwolle; Waanders in De Broeren. Walk inside this bookstore in The Netherlands and admire the stunning ceiling.

city tour zwolle

Up next we will walk over to  Krabbestraat 63 . Here you will find the Wijndragerstoren, which is a wall tower that was part of the city wall and the fortifications of Zwolle. These remains date back to between 1475 and 1500. But that wasn’t the first city wall that had to protect Zwolle. There were remains found of an early city wall that dates back to before 1300 and another that was built to replace the older wall in the 14th century. These walls surrounded the entire city and originally had 23 towers, and only the Zwanentoren, Wijndragerstoren and Pelserpoorttoren remain.

At  Broekenkerkplein 13  you will find the former monastery that the Broerenkerk monastery church (the book store) was a part of. This is now the location of restaurant Librije which has three Michelin stars, and it’s placed in a building that dates back to 1467. Now we will walk over the  Pelserbrugje  – which is the most beautiful bridge in Zwolle – and then we will discover  Thorbeckegracht  which is, in my opinion, the most beautiful street and canal in Zwolle.

city tour zwolle

Then walk to  Diezepoortenplas  and  Koewegje  to end up at the  Oosterkerk . This church in Zwolle is a beautiful one that is found near one of the canals in Zwolle and dates back to 1888. Then continue this Zwolle free walking tour to  Groot Wezenland , walk over the bridge called  Kerkbrugje , to the  Plantagekerk . This is yet another church in Zwolle and construction started in 1873. The church was officially opened on the 25th of July 1875. In 1880 central heating was added inside the building and then a toilet facility was created in 1881.

After that, you must walk to  Diezerstraat 93 . This building is called ‘Het Witte Kruis’, or the White Cross. This building is made in 1904 in the jugendstil architectural style on the assignment of a pharmacy that was planning on using that building. In the middle of the building, you can find an image of demigod Asclepius, who was the god of medicine. Then walk to  Diezerstraat 58 . Here you can find the building ‘De Witte Leeuw’, or the White Lion. It was built in 1666 as a brewery, which you can also see by the beer barrels on both sides of the dormer, as well as a house for beer brewer Albert Brouwer.

It is known in Zwolle that there was a beer brewery going by the name ‘De Witte Leeuw’ at least in 1560, and after its relocation to this building people are unaware for how long this brewery stayed at this location. Just below the centre window of the 1st floor, you will see why the building has its name; there is a white lion on the building placed here. This lion has a blue ball under its claw, which refers to the nickname of people from Zwolle; blauwvingers, or blue fingers.

Up next we will walk to  Wolweverstraat ,  Walstraat ,  Van Nahuysplein  and then finally to  Sassenstraat 51 . Here you will find the only city gate that remains in Zwolle, called ‘Sassenpoort’. It is said that this gate was the inner city gate within the fortifications of Zwolle and that it was connected to the outer city gate. It dates back to 1409 and was built with mostly trachyte and tuff.

city tour zwolle

At  Schoutenstraat 4,  you will find a Walloon church. A part of this church was a chapel that was found in 1360, but most of the current building dates back to 1504. This church has been in use as a Walloon church since 1686. In Walloon churches, the services are mainly in French, and the same thing still happens in this church in Zwolle. After admiring this old chapel in Zwolle, we will continue to walk further towards  Samuel Hirschstraat 8.  Here you will find the synagogue of Zwolle

From 1747 until 1758, the Jewish community in Zwolle was located in a building in the Bitterstraat. But the rental contract couldn’t be renewed, so they had to find another location. However, that’s when the community wanted to build a synagogue. Instead of granting them a building site, the synagogue went to the current building of restaurant De Librije in September 1758.

By the end of the 19th century, the city canal next to the building was continually flooding, which meant that the building was slowly starting to wear down. The Jewish community had to search another building, and this time they took the plans for building a new site out of the dust. They bought five buildings in the Schoutenstraat, and after that architect, F.C. Koch (from Zwolle) made the current eclectic design. This synagogue was opened on the 21st of July 1899.

Now we are going to walk to  Nieuwe Markt ,  Sassenstraat ,  Krommejak ,  Koestraat ,  Bloemendalstraat ,  Oude Vismarkt  and we will end up at  Sassenstraat 2 .

Here you will find the city hall of Zwolle, which exists out of two parts .  One part dates back to the 15th century (but was modernised in 1821) and the new section was finished in 1975. In the 90s the building was deemed too small, and a lot of employees were moved to another town hall in the neighbourhood Hanzeland in Zwolle.

Continue your free walking tour in Zwolle to  Goudsteeg 17 . Here you will find a building that is called ‘Huis met de Hoofden’, or house with the heads. The eastern part of the building dates back to around 1464; the western part is a little bit younger. Then you will walk to  Koestraat .

city tour zwolle

After that, you continue your Zwolle tour to  Blijmarkt 18 . Here you will find one of the leading museums in Zwolle, called Museum De Fundatie. This museum is located in the former palace of Justice that was designed by Eduard Louis de Coninck from The Hague and built between 1838 and 1841. It has been a museum location since 1994, but it has only been the home of Museum de Fundatie since 2004. The oval-shaped addition on the roof of this building in Zwolle has been added in 2012- 2013. This is a new exposition room, plus it offers one of the best views in Zwolle.

Then walk to  Buitenkant 8  and  14 . Here you will find remains of the city wall of Zwolle that date back to the 15th century. After admiring that old part in the centre of Zwolle, we will continue our tour to  Suikerbergsteeg ,  Potgietersingel ,  Kalverstraat ,  Kamperstraat ,  Luttekestraat ,  Papendwarsstraat ,

Papenstraat  and  Praubstraat .

city tour zwolle

Our next stop on this Zwolle tour is a courtyard. At  Praubstraat 27  you will find the Hof van Zuthem, or courtyard of Zuthem. Knight Alof van Suythem first founded this courtyard in Zwolle in 1350. The current patio was built on assignment by Alof van den Rutenberg in 1535, who was the Lord of Zuthem. This courtyard was expanded several times, but the last time it happened was in 1787.

city tour zwolle

Up next we will walk to  Lombardstraat 4 , where you can find a former bank and police station which is partly dating back to 1490. Walk to  Grote Markt  and then to  Voorstraat . After that, we are almost at the end of our free walking tour in Zwolle, The Netherlands. Walk to  Luttekestraat 2-4 , where you can find a former Vleeshuis or meat house. This is where butchers came together to discuss things, share information and more. This building dates back to 1469. It was used between 1605- 1880 as a weighing house.

Now you will walk to the final stop of this Zwolle free walking tour;  Grote Markt 18 . Here you find the Grote Kerk, or Sint- Michaëlskerk. The patron and the guardian angel of the church is the Archangel Michael, and a statue of the angel can be spotted on the roof of the vestibule. The current church was built between 1406 and 1466. On the 17th of December 1682, the 15th-century tower of this church in Zwolle collapsed. This happened because the tower was weakened due to several lightning strikes in 1548, 1606 and 1669. Zwolle had the tallest church tower in The Netherlands (between 115 and 120 metres high), but lost it after the collapse.

Are you looking to expand your free walking tour in Zwolle?

If you’re positive that you want to walk more than those 6 kilometres, then I can recommend you to add the following places to your Zwolle tour.

  • Here you will find a Dominican church and monastery in Zwolle. Construction was started on the 3rd of May 1900, and it was officially opened on the 12th of December 1901. The Dominicans didn’t have a place in Zwolle since 1580. Currently, there are still around 7 Dominicans living in this monastery.
  • Here you will find the train station of Zwolle (so you can also use it as your starting point). The first train station of Zwolle was opened on the 6th of June 1864. It first connected the train from Utrecht via Zwolle to the town of Kampen, as well as Arnhem to the city of Leeuwarden. This was a temporary building and was demolished in 1873. That’s when the current train station Zwolle was opened. Later on, many more train connections were added.
  • Here you will explore the only remaining traditional Dutch windmill in the city of Zwolle, called De Passiebloem (the passionflower in English). This is an oil mill with stockrooms and dates back to 1776. 100.000 kg of seeds, 80.000 cookies and 530 barrels of oil could be stored in three basements. There used to be four oil mills on this river, but this is the only one left. It can be visited every first and third Saturday of the month from 10:00- 16:00. And every third Wednesday of the month from 13:00 – 16:00.
  • The Noordereiland, or Northern island, in Zwolle, used to be the place where traders and people who worked in the shipping industry were living.

Zwolle is one of the Dutch historic Hanze cities, but what is a Hanseatic city?

Hanseatic cities, or trading cities, used to be rich, industrious, and economically well-run cities. Hanseatic cities were connected as a treading alliance. Hanze cities created on the initiative of merchants around 1200 as a settlement along a river. Over time, these settlements grew into rich, prosperous, often walled and gated cities. In the heyday of the Hanseatic cities, as many as 200 cities from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium took part. The trade flow of goods consisted of salt, fish, grains, wood, beer, wine, cloth, beeswax, and pelts, which were luxury products at the time. In addition to trade in goods, sharing knowledge and information was also a great asset. The movement of goods was mainly by boat across the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the major rivers. You can still recognize a Hanseatic city in this time by the city walls, city gates, beautiful merchant houses, trade offices, grand warehouses, and canals and canals.

The first of the Zwolle tourist attractions to visit when visiting the city are the old fortifications. The old ramparts and the remains of the city walls are perfect attractions to see on a day of exploring the city.

At one point there were 23 towers on the city walls and 8 city gates. The only surviving city gate today is the 600-year-old city gatehouse Sassenpoort . It was built in 1409 and is still standing today. The gate, built mainly of trachyte and tuff, is a Rijksmonument and one of the top 100 Dutch heritage sites. Taking a walk through the Sassenpoort is considered one of the top things to do in Zwolle.

In the 15th century Zwolle was an important city, member of the so-called Hanseatic League – a medieval commercial and defensive union, that included cities like Hamburg, Rostock, Dortmund, and Bremen in Germany, Riga in Latvia, Gdansk and Krakow in Poland. In the Netherlands, besides Zwolle, Deventer, Hasselt, Zutphen, Kampen, Elburg, Hattem, Harderwijk, and Duisburg belonged to this medieval confederation.

The St. Michael’s Church , also known as Grote Kerk , was built around 1406-1466 during the heyday of the city on the place of an early Romanesque church from 1040. The Grote Kerk is home of the biggest organ in the Netherlands, the Schnitger Organ ( Schnitgerorgel ), built by the famous German organ builder Arp Schnitger and finished in 1721 after his death by his son – Franz Caspar.

Fun fact: There was a second church in Zwolle named St. Michael’s Church. As the Grote Kerk was converted into a protestant church, a new catholic church devoted to Archangel Michael was built at the end of the 19th century. The church was demolished in 1965.

The Women’s Home ( Het Vrouwenhuis ) is one of Zwolle’s most famous landmarks and a small museum. The house was built somewhere before 1680 and since 1742 it served as a home for aged women until 1984. The ground floor of the house shows the grandeur of the 17th-century Zwolle an not much has changed since them. In 2022 the museum went a complete renovation. If you want to visit it, you need to check the Agenda on the museum’s website and enroll for a tour.

One of the most popular things to do in Zwolle is to take a stroll through Van der Velde in de Broeren – a hip and happy book shop that is housed in a historical church building. It is not considered a bookstore but more of an experience as you can browse the ever-changing selection of books and other merchandise.

Quite surprisingly, Zwolle is home to some fine examples of Jugendstil architecture . Jugendstil is the Austrian version of the Art Nouveau Architecture movement during the Belle Époque period (1890-1910). Dutch architects G.G. Post, G.B. Broekema and M. Meijerink introduced the new avant-garde style in booming Zwolle at the beginning of the 20th century. You can spot Jugendstil architecture in the city centre, along the Veerallee , and in the so-called Royal district ( Prins Hendrikstraat and Koningin Wilhelminastraat ).

The Bonami SpelComputer Museum is a dedicated computer and gaming museum that is housed in the Weighing House in Zwolle. Van der Valk Hotel Zwolle | Your Dutch Guide

Van der Valk is a top choice when staying in The Netherlands and the hotel in Zwolle is no exception. The hotel is situated outside the city centre and a great option if you’re arriving by car and want to see some other sights in the area. The standard rooms in the hotel are superior rooms, so you’ll be sleeping in grand and comfortable rooms, upgrades are available for very little as well.

Where to stay in Zwolle? Pillows Boutique Hotel | Your Dutch Guide

Location-wise there is no better hotel in Zwolle to stay at than Pillows Boutique Hotel . It’s only a stone’s throw away from both the train station and the city centre. And the rooms are so very lovely.

Zwolle, The Netherlands | Your Dutch Guide

It is probably hard to imagine, but when Holland’s top cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam were still meaningless little villages, Zwolle was a sprawling city of great importance. The cities’ location near the IJssel river meant Zwolle was part of the powerful Hanseatic League, which made it an important trading port and cultural centre from the 11th to the 15th century.

But Zwolle is even older than that. With a discovery of a woodhenge south of the city, historians were able to conclude that Zwolle was inhabited from the Bronze Age on. The formation of the modern city started in the 8th century and Zwolle was granted city rights in 1230.

Since Zwolle was part of the Hanseatic League, the historical city is walled with a star-shaped fortification, which is very distinctive for  Hanseatic cities . Exploring what’s inside those city walls will easily occupy you for a day, making Zwolle a lovely day trip from Amsterdam, though there is more to see and do. I highly recommend visiting the stunning ‘Venice of Holland’ Giethoorn when you’re in Zwolle, as this town (that has only waterways and no roads) is one of the prettiest towns in The Netherlands.

Cycling in Zwolle

Bike tour Zwolle, Baja Bikes | Your Dutch Guide

The best way to get to know any Dutch city is by bike, and Zwolle is no exception. This guided bike tour is the perfect way to get to know the city. A very knowledgeable guide will take you along the pretty canals, fortresses and historical buildings of Zwolle. And you’ll make a stop to taste some typical local delicacies.

Zwolle by boat

Zwolle by boat | Your Dutch Guide

Zwolle has a fine system of canals, so the city is pretty prefect to see from the water. You can either join a canal boat tour or rent a boat yourself. If you’re travelling with your kids, why not rent a pedalo or a standup paddleboard . So much fun!

Top things to do in Zwolle: Peperbus | Your Dutch Guide

Locals have actually baptised the tower of the Church of Our Lady as Peperbus (peppermill) as the tower has such a distinctive shape and can be seen from everywhere in the centre of Zwolle. You can climb the 234 steps of the tower to enjoy a beautiful view over the city, as well as see the remains of Thomas à Kempis, a German theologist who moved to Zwolle where he became a devotee of the Brethren of the Common Life.

Museum de Fundatie

Museum de Fundatie | Your Dutch Guide

Museum de Fundatie is considered one of The Netherlands’ top museums and is, without a doubt, the top thing to see in Zwolle. The main building is quite classical, but a surreal addition was connected to the rooftop, depicting (what I think is) a glistening cloud. The museum stages high-quality contemporary exhibitions.

Waanders in de Broeren | Your Dutch Guide

If you have read this article you know that The Netherlands has a thing for opening (amazing) bookshops in grand churches. And there is also an amazing bookstore in Zwolle. Waanders is situated in the old Broeren church and the light and bright building, with the impressive organ in the centre, is filled with an amazing collection of books. If it’s all a little daunting, the café is a great place to relax.

Photo by Moonloft | Your Dutch Guide

Moonloft is just a great concept store and a fabulous place to go on your shopping spree in Zwolle. There are clothing and lingerie, jewellery, ceramics, glasswork and stationery to choose from.

Sassenpoort

Top things to do in Zwolle, Sassenpoort | Your Dutch Guide

Since Zwolle was once a fortified city, people in the Middle Ages could only enter the city through one of the city gates. Only one of these gates remains nowadays: Sassenpoort. You can see this grand gate at the corner of Wilhelminasingel and Sassenstraat. The latter is also the best street to find independent and colourful shops.

Day trip to Giethoorn

Giethoorn, The Netherlands | Your Dutch Guide

Giethoorn is a highlight in the east of The Netherlands and an absolute must-see. Plus, Giethoorn makes for a perfect day trip from Amsterdam. However, when you’re in Zwolle Giethoorn is just around the corner so you may as well visit while you’re there. Take the train from Zwolle to Steenwijk. There take bus no. 70 which takes you to Giethoorn. Use website  9292ov.nl  to plan your trip.

Giethoorn is called ‘the Venice of Holland’ as it is a town that hasn’t got any streets and is connected through canals, walking paths and bike trails. Giethoorn is actually built on water, and to say that Giethoorn is charming is a complete understatement. In spring and summer, Giethoorn can get extremely crowded as it’s only a small town and it has become extremely popular with Asian tour groups. So see if you are able to visit outside these seasons, or visit the northern part of Giethoorm, which is a bit quieter.

Discovering Giethoorn by water is an absolute must-do. Near the tourist office electric boats, bikes and canoes are for rent. If you’re pressed for time, but you’d love to visit Giethoorn when you’re in Amsterdam, there are (almost) daily  day trips from Amsterdam to Giethoorn .

Lots & More

Photo by Lots & More | Your Dutch Guide

Lots & More is my new favourite restaurant in Zwolle. It’s an easy find, right across the historical Sassenpoort. Try to grab one of the seats outside as it’s perfect for people-watching, and order a lovely breakfast, brunch or a salad for lunch. You can compose all the dishes to match your taste, it’s perfect.

Stadscafé Blij

Photo by Stadscafé Blij | Your Dutch Guide

Taking a break is great at Stadscafé Blij , a lovely restaurant on the ever-vibrant market square of Zwolle. In the morning it’s a great place for coffee and cake, during lunch you can order scrumptious salads here and the evenings are best for a cocktail and burger from the extensive menu.

Photo by Dogtails | Your Dutch Guide

Cocktails with matching hotdogs, or the other way around. What a clever concept. Dogtails is an excellent bar and restaurant to try when you’re visiting Zwolle. Order one of the hotdogs with some excellent coleslaw on the side and try one of the amazing cocktails.

De gillende keukenmeiden

Photo by De gillende keukenmeiden | Your Dutch Guide

De Gillende Keukenmeiden , which translates into ‘the creaming kitchen maids, is one of the loveliest restaurants at a pretty square in Zwolle. The outside seating is the best part of the restaurant, with funky parasols, bunting and colourful potted plants. Order a freshly made lemonade and a piece of one of the homemade cakes.

Straat in Zwolle, Nederland. Lezen wat te doen in Zwolle, de meest gezellige stad in Nederland met de mooiest boekhandel in Nederland.

A brief history of Zwolle

Zwolle is the capital of Overijssel, one of the provinces in the Netherlands.  This historic Dutch city has seen inhabited for thousands of years and the city dates back to the 1200s.

It’s also a fortified city, which stems from the fact that Zwolle was one of the wealthiest Dutch cities due to its proximity to one of the mightiest rivers and its membership in the Hanseatic League.

The Hanseatic League was an organization formed by various cities in this part of the Netherlands to band together to protect their trade interests, including Kampen and Deventer.  They’re all lovely historic cities although the river that made many of them powerful is now dammed up.

However, the fortifications around these cities still make it clear that you’re entering a truly historic place, far older than the country of my birth. 😉

A must-see in Zwolle: Waanders in de Broeren bookstore in a former cathedral

Exterior of the Broerenkerk in Zwolle, the Netherlands. See this beautiful Dutch bookstore in a church, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.

I’m an unabashed literature geek and after seeing the Boekhandel Dominicanen bookstore in Maastricht , I figured that I’d seen enough beautiful bookstores in my lifetime–and there wasn’t another cathedral bookstore in the Netherlands.  However, a former colleague of my husband’s who is born and raised in Zwolle heard me raving about the Selexyz bookstore and casually asked if I had been to Waanders in de Broeren in Zwolle.  What a surprise I had in store.

The church that Waanders in de Broen was built in dates back to the dominicanen brothers who founded the church in 1465 as part of a cloister.

Inside Waanders in de Broers, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Only 40 minutes from Amsterdam. #Travel #Bookstores #Netherlands #Zwolle

In the 1600s, the church closed and it became a protestant church like many churches at the time.  In 1983, the church closed and this historic church was restored in the ’80s into a historic exposition space.

However, in 2004, a local bookseller (Boekhandel Waanders) bought this historic church and turned it into a beautiful bookstore in a church with the assistance of Bureau BK.

The Broerenkerk is three stories high and full of fantastic Dutch literature.   Compared to the Selexyz cathedral in Maastricht , Waanders in de Broeren has done a fantastic job of integrating the existing structure in a modern way while showing off the beauty of the church.

One of my favorite features of Waanders in de Broen is the stunning organ that has been left intact (and still is played on occasion).  The book selection in English isn’t fantastic, but this beautiful bookstore church is very good for Dutch literature and for gifts.

Binnen Waanders in de Broers. Zwolle, Nederland. Een mooi boekhandel in een kerk, een van de beste dingen om te doen in Zwolle. Misschien de mooiste boekhandel in de wereld. #Nederland #Zwolle

Waanders in de Broen also has a lovely cafe that hosts an affordable yet delicious lunch with a twist.  Either way, it’s a great place to sit to enjoy the beauty of the church with a cup of coffee in hand.  Their menu looks like a newspaper and it’s in Dutch although the staff can help translate. I thoroughl enjoyed my sandwich at the cafe.

You can visit Waanders in de Broen on weekdays and Saturdays typically in the afternoon with a late night on Thursdays.  Check their hours ahead as they’re closed on Sundays.

Photo of Sassenpoort gate in Zwolle, the Netherlands. This rijksmonument is one of the best things to see in Zwolle. #Zwolle #Netherlands #Nederland

It’s hard to miss the historical medieval gates of Zwolle.  The Sassenpoort gate was built in the 1400s shortly after Zwolle’s admission to the Hanseatic league to both defend the city and show off its wealth.

This Riijksmonument building was outfitted in the 1800s with the “cool feature” of being able to throw down boiling oil on enemies entering through the gate.   It’s easy to imagine yourself going back in time when you step through the Sassenpoort gate and I really think it’s one of the most beautiful city gates in the Netherlands.

Eat at the best restaurant in the Netherlands: De Librije

De Librije has been named one of the best restaurants in the Netherlands and it currently holds three Michelin stars.  De Librije focuses on locally sourced ingredients used in an innovative way where you get to choose what suits you best in a multi-course meal with an ever-changing menu.

It’s possible to get a reservation on most weeknights with some planning (weekends are difficult), so if you’re looking for a foodie experience at a Michelin starred restaurant in the Netherlands, consider heading to De Librije for lunch or dinner.  If you plan poorly, consider visiting their gourmet shop for some goodies!

De Librije also a luxury hotel in Zwolle for those who want the complete experience of being pampered in this former prison hotel… and you get breakfast in the morning.

Most of the reason that Dutchies come to Zwolle is to shop as the historic centre of Zwolle is full of popular Dutch shops that you’ll mostly find close to Diezerstraat. For touristy stuff, you can pick up things at Waanders in de Broen or the  Melkmarkt.

Lovers of cute boutique shops that carry independent Dutch brands will love Luttekestraat, Sassenstraat, and Melkmarkt, which is home to a number of concept stores. Be warned that many are not open on Sundays and close on the earlier side.

Stadswandeling in Zwolle

Getting lost in a medieval city like Zwolle is one of the BEST parts about visiting the historic Dutch cities like Zwolle.  The bit close to Waanders is quite pretty although history lovers will want to seek out the picturesque streets of Zwolle.

The bulk of the Rijksmonument buildings in Zwolle are clustered in the streets in between Sassenstraat, Grote Kerkplein, Praubstraat, and Luttekestraat (starred on the Zwolle map, so don’t worry if you’re wondering where these streets are!).   I also loved the area close to Pelserbrugje.

Similarly, don’t miss the medieval tower  Wijndragerstoren .  You’ll also have a picturesque view from across the canal close to Waanders in de Broeren. Hofje lovers may want to visit the historic Vrouwenhuis museum for one of the last original hofjes in Zwolle to be owned by the original family.

The Peperbus is an iconic church in Zwolle named for its shape.  You can climb to the top for great views of the city although the streets around it make it easy to admire it from below.   The name is the inspiration for a spicy cheese produced in Zwolle (peperbuskaas).

Try Zwolse Balletjes

Zwolse Balletjes are a candy from Zwolle made with cane sugar originally.  They come in all kinds of different and delicious flavors now, including mocha and vanilla.  The recipe is the same as the original, so you’ll need to try this unique Dutch candy at the Zwolse Balletjeshuis.   Even if you just love candy, it’s a great excuse to buy some Dutch candies as a souvenir.

 St Michael’s Church

This massive church in Zwolle dates back to the 1400s although earlier forms of the church have existed in the same place since the 700s.  Lovers of medieval churches will enjoy the rich interior details as well as the elaborate organ within this Dutch church.

Unfortunately, the tower collapsed, however, Saint Michael’s is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in the Netherland. It’s free to visit although it’s not always open to the public on days besides Sundays.

If you’re curious to see another church in Zwolle that has been since converted, consider visiting Blue Sakura for a sushi buffet in a former church.  Who says that eating sushi can’t be a religious moment?  😉

How to get to Zwolle by train

There’s a direct train from Amsterdam to Zwolle that takes one hour and a half per way.   Part of the reason I encourage you to stay over in Zwolle is that there’s a bus connection to Giethoorn from Zwolle and it’s a bit much to go from Amsterdam to Giethoorn (2.5 hours per way) by public transit as the connection isn’t great.  I think that having one day in Zwolle and one day in Giethoorn would be perfect.

The reason that many people come to Zwolle: you must transfer through Zwolle to get to Giethoorn, which makes it the perfect place to stay if you want to take a day trip from Giethoorn.

Giethoorn is accessible by bus from Zwolle via the 70 bus towards Steenwijk.  The journey from Zwolle to Giethoorn takes about one hour and the bus stop for Giethoorn is Blauwe Hand. Giethoorn is widely considered to be one of the cutest towns in the Netherlands.  (Who can resist this?)

Great article! Had a great time exploring Zwolle with you… and I need to go back for De Librije one day ;)

December 13, 2017 at 3:21 pm

I could’t agree with you more!! Maybe good to know, but f you can’t get into De Librije (it’s extremely popular, you have to book months and months in advance), there is a Librije food shop nearby where you can buy such nice food goodies, well worth it.

[…] train: You’ll need to take the train to Zwolle, a gorgeous typically Dutch city.  There’s the 70 bus from Zwolle that goes to Giethoorn […]

Travis kelce adorably calls taylor swift his 'significant other' during charity auction for eras tour tickets, share this article.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes held his annual gala in Las Vegas on Saturday night, raising money for his charity, The 15 and Mahomies Foundation . The fancy evening featured an auction, and Mahomes’s best friend and teammate Travis Kelce was in on the action.

MORE:   Could Taylor Swift be adding a Tortured Poets Department portion to the Eras Tour setlist?

Kelce, who attended the event with girlfriend Taylor Swift, shared with the audience that his “significant other” had donated four tickets to one of her mega popular Eras Tour shows in New Orleans, Miami or Indianapolis when the show returns to the United States in October.

“I was just talking to my significant other and uh, we might have one other auction item that wasn’t on the docket. Has anybody heard of the Eras Tour?” Kelce asked the crowd to raucous applause. Professional auctioneer, Harry Santa, opened the bidding at $5,000, with the four tickets eventually going for $80,000 (per Santa’s Instagram, @harrysanta ).
