The Ship: Murder Party , also known as simply The Ship , is a first-person shooter computer game using Valve Software's Source engine developed by Outerlight. The game was released on July 11, 2006, on Steam with retail distribution in Europe and Australia in September, and April 10, 2007, for North America. A playable concept for The Ship was released as a modification for the game Half-Life in 2004.

Outerlight later released a Spiritual Successor to this game called Bloody Good Time in 2010. Blazing Griffin, the team behind The Ship: Remasted , released another Spiritual Successor called Murderous Pursuits in 2018.

The game is set on a 1920s recreational cruise ship. Each player is assigned a quarry, and the object is to murder him or her with nobody watching, while at the same time watching out for, and defending yourself against, your own hunter.

A mysterious man named Mr. X has handed out free tickets for his luxury cruise. Little did the passengers know, they were falling into his devious trap. All the passengers are required to track down and murder another passenger. If a passenger chooses not to do so, Mr. X will kill both the passengers and his or her family.

Each player is given a nickname by which they are identified. This is done to make it more difficult to tell players apart from NPCs, who have similar names and look the same as normal players. Each player is assigned a quarry, whom he or she must murder. The last known location of a player's quarry is always revealed to the player. However, the appearance of the quarry is only revealed if the player converses with the quarry.

There are several different weapons with which to eliminate one's quarry. Different amounts of money are rewarded for a kill depending on how difficult it is to use the weapon and how many times it has been used. If a player murders an NPC or anyone other than his or her quarry or hunter, a cash amount — dependent on the server settings — will be deducted from his or her bank account. Players with less than a certain figure, set by the server, in their bank account will be kicked from the cruise. Various weapons can be found scattered all around the ship, such as flare guns, fire axes, firearms, knives, swords, crowbars (which state "to be used by a free man", a nod to Half-Life 's main character Gordon Freeman), even secret traps provided just for killing your quarry, like falling lifeboats, saunas, freezers, even a deck that turns into a 60 degree angle by command, among others. If a player is seen holding a weapon or committing a crime, he or she will be fined and incarcerated for a short amount of time.

Everyone has eight needs similar to The Sims . Such needs are eating, drinking, sleeping, socialising, maintaining proper hygiene and using the bathroom. Some of the needs would cause impairment, such as lack of sleep would cause the player to fall asleep on the spot. Other needs could become fatal, such as thirst and hunger. If the player does not fulfill these needs, he or she will die, resulting in a loss of $1000. Needs are sated by going to restaurants, taking showers, talking with other players, etc. This forces players into situations where they are vulnerable to attack, and also attempts to prevent players from camping.

You go to jail by pulling out a weapon in front of a guard or camera. Another way is that you are spotted by eyewitnesses. There is an eye in your hud that tells you whether you are being spotted or not; if you are watched by security the eye in your HUD turns red; if not, the eye is green. The meter for trespassing counts down and you'll be fined if the count down is complete. You can bribe a guard to pull out a weapon for a limited time.

The Ship: Murder Party provides examples of:

  • Book Ends : In single player, the main character is rescued and is in a hospital - with Mr. X starting his speech on the intercom.
  • Bottomless Bladder : Averted; the call of nature is one of the needs that have to be satisfied as you're wandering the ship.
  • Butt-Monkey : The Captain of the Ship in single-player. You'll rob him, then poison him, and then break into his hospital room and kill him, mostly for entirely circumstantial reasons.
  • Camping a Crapper : As Bottomless Bladder is thoroughly averted, it's possible to catch your target at their most vulnerable when they're forced to answer the call of nature.
  • Cherry Tapping : There's ample opportunity for it with some of the less impressive weapons...
  • Chessmaster : Mr. X, who sets up all the players to kill each other, but is not directly involved in any of it himself.
  • Contract on the Hitman : The entire set up has you tasked with killing another passenger, who is also out to kill someone else, while another passenger is trying to kill you. Simply put, every player has to assassinate someone while trying not to be assassinated themselves.
  • Dangerously Close Shave : The straight razor is one of the most powerful melee weapons in the game.
  • Deadly Game : Mr. X puts a group of passengers into his game where they must each kill another of the chosen passengers, and try to avoid their own demise in the process.
  • Diesel Punk : Played with. While the game is set on a series of cruise ships from the 1920s and 30s, it in fact takes place in the present day. References to 2006 (the game's year of release on Steam) can be found in certain areas.
  • Escort Mission : The ambassador is pushed by a wheelchair. Through his travels, a total of four goons will attack at different points on the trip.
  • Expy : The psychiatrist looks and sounds a lot like Sigmund Freud . Psychiatrist: Tell me about... your mother .
  • Flare Gun : A surprisingly effective and easy-to-find weapon.
  • Frying Pan of Doom : One of the weapons available in the galley.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking : Mr. X, being a diabolical villain, naturally uses a long black cigarette holder.
  • He Knows Too Much : Jimmy the Bellhop in the single-player game will inform you that Mr. X doesn't pay the winning passengers and let them leave — he scuttles the ship and kills them all, to clean up loose ends. Getting the money to bribe your way off the ship before it gets sunk drives the plot of the single-player game.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen : Outside of backstory, Mr. X's most prominent role in the game is... as a HUD element. Upon killing your quarry, their portrait will be replaced by one of Mr. X grinning from ear to ear; if you are yourself killed, you'll get an image of Mr. X pouting.
  • High-Class Gloves : The socialite wears a pair of long red gloves.
  • Hospital Hottie : The nurse NPC.
  • Improbable Weapon User : Any player playing the game. The weapons that can be used to off fellow passengers range from the mundane (pistols, knives, axes) to the absolute strange (scalpels, umbrellas, knitting needles).
  • Locked in a Freezer : It's possible to lure your target into a walk-in freezer, lock the door behind them and turn up the cold to maximum.
  • Malevolent Architecture : Depending on whether you're using it or it's being used against you . You won't notice it if you aren't looking for it, but Mr. X seems to have a passion for both secret passages and traps . For example, one ship hosts a one-way mirror hidden behind a vending machine, allowing you to shoot into an adjoining room without being seen. It looks like a painting from the other side.
  • Parasol of Pain : You can, if you so desire, off your target with an umbrella.
  • Pretty in Mink : The socialite wears a white fox neck wrap.
  • Poisoned Weapons : The most devious weapon you can use is a hypodermic needle filled with poison. Stab your target once and they will become violently sick, starting a countdown until they keel over. Just be sure they're not so close to the medical bay that they can be cured first.
  • Sauna of Death : Much like the freezer example above, you can roast anyone who wanders into the sauna by turning up the heat to lethal levels.
  • Shout-Out : The crowbar's description reads "Used by a Free Man ."
  • Sinister Shiv : It's possible to find a shiv stashed in the ship's brig.
  • Speaking Simlish : Most dialogue with non-player characters goes like this.
  • Stocking Filler : On the nurse NPC that shows up in the lobbies of most maps' sickbays. Those maps, however cleverly put her behind a chest-high counter that can't be get around or get marked for trespassing if you do head behind it, so to get a view, one either has to quickly jump in front of the counter, or use the noclip cheat code.

Overboard!

Overboard! review – ingenious cruise-ship thriller casts you as the villain

iOS, PC, Switch; Inkle You are the murderous starlet forced to concoct your alibi in Inkle’s fresh and beautifully detailed paperback crime novel of a game

A board an ocean liner travelling from Britain to New York in the late 1930s, a famous actor murders her husband by throwing him from the upper deck into the raging sea. If this were a piece of golden age detective fiction, the fate of the drowned man would form the basis of an intriguing whodunnit, but in the hands of narrative game specialist Inkle – a team that skilfully turned Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days into a luscious interactive adventure – it was never going to be so straightforward.

Instead, Overboard! is told from the killer’s perspective, the player taking on the role of faded screen idol Veronica Villensey who launches her spouse Malcolm into the Atlantic in order to claim his life insurance. From this point on, your job is to create an alibi for Veronica as well as perhaps implicating another passenger in Malcolm’s watery demise. This is achieved by touring the ship and chatting to other characters – some of whom can be useful allies, while others may have secrets to hide that can be exploited to divert attention or even set up ulterior suspects. The game has an internal clock that ticks towards your arrival in New York, so any plan you formulate has to be tidily and swiftly enacted, relying on certain characters being in the right place at the right time, and important objects such as keys, sleeping pills and damning documents being discovered and utilised.

Overboard!

Cleverly, there’s little chance of you getting away with murder and claiming the insurance cash in your first attempt. Instead, the game constantly restarts, giving you a fresh chance to bend events and suspicions to your will. As with the Hitman series, the game also presents you with a series of side objectives to tick off, so you always feel like you’re making progress. This also ensures that each time you get to the game’s perennially repeated climax – which sees retired military figure Major Singh gathering all the passengers into the dining room to investigate Malcolm’s disappearance – you have a new titbit to exploit.

Everything is performed through a beautifully simple interface that contains nothing more than a 2D representation of the ship and a series of simple dialogue windows. However, through the sparklingly witty dialogue and occasional sound effects and music, you’re completely transported into the fiction. From the dashing yet rather suspicious boat captain, to the cocktail-swilling widow, to the obsequious, all-seeing steward, Overboard! brilliantly reproduces all the archetypal characters and intrigues of a Dorothy L Sayers novel, with a dash of modern irony and self-parody that keeps each playthrough fresh and entertaining.

Developed in two months by a small team, Overboard! makes the absolute most of its compactness and focus to produce a riveting narrative puzzle box. It is of course a visual novel, of sorts, but within it there is the essence of experimental adventure titles from the 1980s and 90s – the likes of Lure of the Temptress and The Last Express – which explored and combined game styles to produce new experiences beyond the somewhat static conventions of the genre. From its modest graphics, confined world and small cast, Overboard! conjures something that feels expansive and alive, something reassuringly familiar but also strange and surprising.

Overboard! allows us to imagine what would have happened had Agatha Christie seen Groundhog Day and written a whole new type of mystery novel as a result. Its mobile format also works in its favour – as a Switch or smartphone game, it feels like carrying a little detective paperback around with you, except here you are the lead character, author and reader. As an experiment in fast, story-based game development it is – unlike most of my own mariticidal plots and alibis – a quite scintillating success.

Playing With Murder

Set Sail for Disaster

$ 49.95

Add intrigue to your next party with this murder mystery game, set on a cruise ship.

The Backstory

Your players have been invited on a pleasure cruise by Captain Michael Von Ammon. The guest list includes a number of the Captain’s friends, family members, and business associates, as well as the crew of the Captain’s sixty-foot yacht, the Elizabeth May . Everyone is expecting an evening cruise replete with dinner, drinks, and dancing – they aren’t expecting foul weather, the murder of someone on board , or a sudden shipwreck on a deserted island in the uncharted Caribbean.

This mystery is divided into two primary segments. During the first portion of the evening, Act One , the events take place on the Elizabeth May , Captain Von Ammon’s ship, a sixty-foot pleasure cruiser manned by the Captain, the Ship’s Engineer (played by the Host/Hostess), and a handful of wait staff. As the evening progresses, a tropical storm rolls in, casting a somewhat ominous pall over the festivities. As the hour grows late, lightning strikes the ship, the lights go out in the cabin, and the partygoers hear a scream and a thud . When the players light candles they will find that someone has taken advantage of the momentary darkness to kill another person on the ship. The mystery is afoot!

The Perfect Crime?

Unfortunately, the partygoers will have no immediate opportunity to determine the identity of the killer; the ship has been struck by lightning , blowing most of the mechanical systems. Worse yet, she is taking on water, and the storm is intensifying. Amidst the crash of the waves and the roar of thunder there can be heard a rending shriek as the hull splinters. The partygoers are tossed about and lose consciousness.

Solving the Mystery

Act Two opens with the characters regaining consciousness on the shore of a small island, amid the wreckage of the ship. Miraculously, everyone has survived (except, of course, the victim, whose body has been lost at sea). It looks like there is enough left of the ship to put together a makeshift raft, and there are enough resources on the island to feed the group for quite a while ‘but everyone is nervous at the knowledge that there is undoubtedly a murderer in their midst. Now the players must work together to collect sufficient food and water, build an escape boat from the wreckage of the Elizabeth May and try to identify the murderer !

Headline : Murder mystery on actual boat!

Nickname : Aiste

Menu Highlights : Sandwitches and cupcakes - simple to eat on boat

Theme Highlights : Perfect party theme for a summer birthday!

My friend has a birthday in June, so my gift to her was organizing murder mystery party, while she booked a boat to sail on the local reservoir, enjoy sunshine and greenery around us. We have spent an hour (first act) sailing, then we got “shipwrecked” and played the second act in the park on the coast, where we had a picnic as well 🙂 The characters were fun and enjoyable. Most people have haven’t played murder mystery games before, but they had no trouble getting into character and playing 🙂

Headline : The little things

Nickname : Melissa

Menu Highlights : Food Pulled chicken sliders, Jamaican potato salad, black bean quinoa, watermelon, chips, and butter-rum cupcakes. One utensil food

Theme Highlights : Decor We use that deck as the ship where everyone ate dinner and we had wooden plank looking table covers taped up as visual barriers to separate the two areas. we put fake potholes on the wooden panel table covers, and it looked like a boat. Lol. Our backyard is already pretty Caribbean theme, so we did not need to do much.

We did Set Sail for Disaster for our anniversary party. My husband and I split the host duties. I did all of the pre-party preparation, and he did during the party.

Guests 18 with me and hubby, 20

Scavenger hunt We did more of an escape room with the food and wreckage tokens. We had riddles and games for them to solve and get the tokens.

Extras I made dossiers (fancy folder) For each person. It had their act one character sheet, a piece of Elizabeth May stationary I made for them to use during the games, the voting sheet on the back of the folder, a clip on name tag, and a pen. I used the name tag image a few times, like on the folder, and on a large envelope to give each player their act two character sheet.

Conclusion It was fantastic. It was the best party we have ever thrown. I read through the paperwork three times or so so that I knew it backwards and forwards. I played the character of the bartender while my husband was the engineer. Have someone who is a good actor be Mrs. Von Ammen and another tip I saw on here was to have a good actor be Jake Morrison. Have someone friendly and talkative be the captain. We will totally Play With Murder again.

Headline : Wonderful mystery - great character development!

Nickname : Nikimac@gmail

Menu Highlights : Charcuterie with salami & smoked salmon & many cheeses, fruit tray, veggie tray, shrimp cocktail, chips with salsa & guacamole, rum raisin spice cupcakes, lemon coconut cupcakes, lavender lemon pepper tofu, barbecued shredded chicken, pineapple rice, meatballs, popcorn, macarons, strawberry coconut jello shots, bloody marys, sparkling water & soda pops

Theme Highlights : I used scavenger hunt items for decor, put a YouTube video of the ocean / a storm / an island on the TV, played a couple yacht rock records, had a fun old steamer trunk and random nautical decor, printed a Happy Birthday banner I made in nautical flags, plugged in LED lights to reflect the mood, spread seashells throughout. I bought lifeboat nametags from Oriental Trading, but everything else was pretty random or repurposed. The macrame on the favor bottles took a while but looked great! If you email me I can share the file for the banner & word find & crossword, but the crossword has a couple modifications so you'd probably just want to use it as an example.

I just held my 40th birthday with 35 awesome participants for Setting Sail for Disaster. I had my party from 5-9 so there was a social hour before the game started, and some chill time after. The mystery itself was about 2 hours on the button. I did it at a large house and it was set in the front room (which I called the solarium and had some plants & shells & a record player spinning yacht rock), the galley (which I set up as a bar), the dining hall (where all the food was and a table with lovely candles), and the lounge (where the TV played a porthole view of a boat trip). I modified the clean version of this story to write it just for my women friends, which worked fine. I kept the captain character a man but my friend just wore a fake mustache to play so. I left out all the waiter characters, as I wanted my friends to relax and just enjoy. The chef happily served me a birthday pie, and I modified one waitress to be a photographer instead, who gladly took photos throughout the party. Some people got sooo into it, but even the friends who didn’t play characters still dressed tropical, and I had a Ginger from Gilligan’s Island, 2 mermaids, and a Coast Guard help as background people. Made me so happy that even the introverts enjoyed themselves. Some characters went so into it – printed promo photos, brought a sculpture, made fake injuries, brought business cards, etc. It was wonderful. I supplemented with some get to know you activities including a crossword with answers that you had to talk to each character about, a word find about parts of a boat, and a guessing jar full of Swedish fish. For the scavenger hunt, I nixed the food & water tokens entirely and just set up decor to be used as raft pieces (3 ropes, 3 fishnets, 2 tarps, 1 pole, 15 boards that I’d set food on, 1 anchor, and 1 steering wheel). I also set my laptop and a bag with a dremel motor in the “captain’s office” for discovery later. Out of 33 votes, only 4 guessed the murderer correctly, which was wonderful. I gave mini bottles of liquor with macramed fishnet around them and lifesaver candies as gifts. I served a bunch of dinnery food with a little tropical twist for some things. I gave two trophies to the best costume and best actress, along with a fake nose/glasses disguise and an inflatable trophy. Correct guessers got a tiny treasure chest with a Winner! pin inside. The mystery went exactly as I planned – I sent Act 1 info via email a month beforehand, then had Act 2 available in envelopes to read at the halfway point. Act 1 was an hour, then about a 15 minute regroup, then Act 2 was half an hour, then guessing and announcements were another 15 minutes or so. It was perfect! I was really happy I made some custom modifications, but I would 100% buy again, and I already have friends talking about wanting to host their own.

Headline : 50th Birthday Tropical Get Away!

Nickname : Cindy

Menu Highlights : Served Hawaiian Meatballs, fruit skewers, veggies & dip and Pina Colada Cupcakes

Theme Highlights : Ordered a cruise ship backdrop from Amazon, created a ship's wheel, grass skirt to line the food counter, centerpieces that included sand, seashells and candles.

This party was purchased for my husband’s 50th birthday. The night was a success! Everyone came in character, mingled with the other characters and used the clues and their knowledge to help solve the crime! Some were quite surprised by the killer!

Headline : Mystery Solved With Giggles Aboard

Nickname : Karen

Menu Highlights : Hawaiian BBQ chicken, shredded and on Hawaiian rolls as sliders. Shrimp cocktail. Powdered sugar donuts turned into life preservers with red frosting. Life Saver mints

We purchased the Set Sail for Disaster murder mystery dinner for a volleyball team bonding event for 16 year olds. They did a great job at this age staying into character and solving the mystery. Whole event took 2 hours and every player brought an app, side dish or dessert. I bought cruise ship decor online and used toy plastic food and water bottles for act 2. The audio clips were perfect and really added to setting the right atmosphere. I would definitely host this theme again and any others from Playing With Murder.

Savannah – January 23, 2023

Headline : Best time ever

Nickname : Savannah

Menu Highlights : Dinner was BBQ, mac &cheese, green beans, potatoes and banana pudding.

Theme Highlights : We had so much fun decorating for it. We rented drapes to separate the “deck” from the private island. On the deck side, we hung up scene setter that looked like a boat and water. At the beginning of Act II we took down the drape to reveal the island we set up. We even rented a real margarita machine that was a huge hit! I had LED flood lights set up on both sides of the room. During some of the script reading I had people have the led lights flicker to look like lightening.

We purchased this file for our annual murder mystery but then Covid it. So 2 years later we actually were able to use it.

It was well worth the wait. We had a total of 40 people. It was our largest party yet and went off without a hitch. At the beginning we had each character introduce themselves and give some details about theirselves. Even some investigators gave some insight of their “work history”. It really set the mood.

Milda – November 3, 2022

Headline : First time and will not be the last!

Nickname : Milda

It was all the guests’ first murder mystery party (including mine as the host) and we had so much fun! The instructions made everything easy to put together! We were 11 people We did the food token hunt first, and then I put all the shripwreck tokens in envelopes with puzzles in them instead of making them part of the treasure hunt. We could have done without the treasure hunt, if I were to organize it again I would take that part out. I followed the advice of another reviewer on here to put the best acting friends as the Gambler and Elizabeth Von Ammon, and it made for a lot of fun!

Cass – September 3, 2022

Headline : Wine and Murder - Awesome Party!

Nickname : Cass

Menu Highlights : Instead of a full dinner, we did a large (typical) charcuterie table with a few island/ocean themed items. Shrimp cocktail, pineapple dip, crab dip, coconut almonds.

Theme Highlights : We had the second act outside to really play up the island theme. During the murder scene below deck, we covered the windows to make it really feel like you were below deck!

We rented out and hosted our murder mystery party at a wine bar with 50 people. It was fantastic! People are still talking about it over 2 months later. The costumes and people really getting into character made the night so make sure to give the big roles to people who will really play it us. The “scavenger hunt” portion of the game was a little unnecessary and actually confused guests a little, but it gave me a way to add some more decor/prop items. Only about half the group guessed the murderer. So fun and will definitely be purchasing another!

Mommyholly1 – July 10, 2022

Headline : We killed it!

Nickname : Mommyholly1

Menu Highlights : Pulled pork and tropical drink menu. Guests were asked to bring a tropically-themed side dish or dessert. They brought many different summer salads and we also enjoyed rum-infused coconut cupcakes. My daughter cut a watermelon to look like a shark and put Barbie doll legs in his mouth along with the fruit. We offered Mai tai’s, hurricanes, jellyfish, pink diamonds, and bay breeze drinks along with beer, wine and soda.

Theme Highlights : We hosted a backyard tropical beach party (with a twist of course) and we turned most of the hidden pieces that need to be found into “escape room” type games so it was more than just finding a piece of paper. We locked a dry bag and an ammo box with combination locks and the combos needed to be found elsewhere (one was behind a cardboard porthole and the other in a banner of maritime flags. I printed a maritime flag description sign and casually displayed it with other shells and nautical items on my tables. I made strings of nautical flags out of cardstock and the guests needed to figure out the hidden messages in order to open puzzles. My husband cut two logs and drilled out the inside to hide a clue. We made a cruise-ship looking fence in the backyard with stakes and rope. The weapon was two candlesticks glued together - everything was on a budget but had a nice impact. We printed a large poster of the Caribbean Islands and had a hint there, too! We really had a great time!

We had a great time! We turned this into a tropical backyard party with over 50 people. The materials were easy to use.

Andrea Johnson – July 8, 2022

Headline : Very pleased with the murder mystery kit!

Nickname : Andrea Johnson

I was very pleased with the murder mystery kit. While the downloaded PDF was a lot of pages, I understand because there was a large amount of information that made the event incredible. The event and characters were very detailed, but the directions were easy to follow. The plot and separate acts were well-written, and an added bonus was the music that I was able to use throughout the event. This party was an 18th birthday party for my son, and he and his friends enjoyed it a lot. They were into their characters throughout the event and spent a lot of time attempting to determine the murderer. When they turned in their cards, of the 24 attendees, there were five possible murderers amongst their answers. I thought this spoke very much to not only everyone staying into their character but the well-written nature of the plot. If I am going to host a murder mystery again in the future, I will definitely purchase a kit again from you!

Muhammad – May 5, 2022

Headline : A well-crafted murderous adventure!

Nickname : Muhammad

Menu Highlights : Louisiana Cajun Chicken, cajun chips, Gumbo and starters composing of anchor shaped pastries + canapés and champagne...

Theme Highlights : Nautical theme with Louisiana Luxury yacht experience

We ‘Set Sail for Disaster’ on my girlfriend’s birthday on the 28th of April. I chose a nautical theme to leverage the murder mystery content and added my own spin on it by making the ‘yacht’ a Louisiana high society luxury yacht experience.

We had only close friends attend, around 10 people. Initially I was concerned that there weren’t enough cast members but everyone put effort in with their characters and it made the evening an exceptionally fun experience. The story itself is well-crafted and the game rewards effort.

None of us really enjoyed the scavenger hunt (especially me as the host) and there were certain plot elements (no spoilers) that were predictable. But on the whole it was fantastic and everyone, even those that couldn’t or didn’t like acting, fully took to it.  Some tips for players of this game:

1) If you run the experience with proper effort, everyone else seems to step up so put the effort in terms of decor, food, audio and getting all your stuff ready as the host and guide of the game.

2) Prep well in advance! Give yourself at least a few weeks. There is a lot to print and arrange and rehearse if you want to make it a kickass experience. 3) Try not to be an idiot like me and handle it all yourself. Make sure you have ‘boat staff!’ 4) Focus on the dressup! I found that because everyone made the effort to dressup and rehearse (even if they weren’t that skilled), it set the mood. 5) Set a good couple of hours aside for the actual game. It runs away with you, especially if you’re having a dinner!

6) Get your best acting friends to play Morrison and Lady Von Ammon. They’ll make the show.

7) As the host, try to link the character sheets to aspects of your friends’ personalities. It creates so much drama in the interactions and end-of-story vote!

Final verdict: 8/10. Would definitely recommend.

MAK – December 1, 2021

Headline : Family Fun at its best.

Nickname : MAK

Menu Highlights : We were at a beach location with a pool in the backyard so it lent itself perfectly to this theme. We did island drinks and fish for dinner.

Theme Highlights : Fortunately, our mood was set for us already with the beach location.

We played Set Sail For Disaster during a family reunion with folks from 24 years old to 80! It was great. I was worried that there wasn’t enough information for each person to be able to talk in character through an entire dinner and I was way off. And it just got better as the night went on. I was also surprised that the murderer was not at all obvious – we all chose someone different as a suspect.

Arielg – November 4, 2021

Headline : An adventure from beginning to end!

Nickname : Arielg

Menu Highlights : We ordered a variety of pastas, garlic break, salads and tiramisu. We served non-alcoholic champagne and had staff serve residents.

Theme Highlights : We purchased cruise ship decor from a local party store, played steel drum music on the speaker, had some back drops, set the table with table cloths and flameless candles.

We facilitated this event for our residents living in long term care. Some of the roles were a tad complicated for them but with the help of the 4 staff members we were able to have a very successful and fun event! Residents were laughing and add libbing as the night brought them out of their shells. We didn’t do the scavenger hunt due to mobility however adapted with trivia which was very successful. We ordered in pasta from a local Italian restaurant, decorated the room like a cruise ship, purchased and provided small items to dress up in to distinguish their roles and provided place cards to help other residents identify each other.

rmacd6 – October 8, 2021

Headline : SO MUCH FUN! Highly recommend!

Nickname : rmacd6

This was SUCH a fun party! It was my first time hosting so I didn’t really know what to expect, but Playing with Murder made it really easy with step-by-step directions to follow. We had 11 people playing “Set Sail for Disaster” and everyone was super into it, staying in character and brainstorming who the murderer could be – we had a big vote in the end and only 2 people were correct (but it was close)! Now that I’ve hosted before I feel more comfortable doing another event and can’t wait to try another one – would highly recommend Playing with Murder for the cost, ease of set-up, and game instructions.

Tore – May 17, 2021

Headline : We had a blast!

Nickname : Tore

Menu Highlights : We only did finger foods.

Theme Highlights : Floating candles, shells, ocean sounds on the Alexa, a fishing net.. we even had a real fish out!

This was so much fun! We had 17 people, which was a great amount for us. I didn’t want to make anyone the boat staff, but those would have been a great role if someone wasn’t certain they could come and/or didn’t like to act. Act 1 took place in the house and act 2 was out in our backyard. I put all the food, water, wreckage tokens in empty beer bottles and hid those around. It worked great and people knew what to look for. We also made the rule that whoever had the most food and water tokens got to make the final decision as to which clues to look at. They could also barter the tokens for more information. A couple things I wish I had done differently: 1. Written a part for a photographer or hired a local teenager to take photos. I wish I had gotten more photos but didn’t have the time. 2. Told everyone beforehand that they need to have a bit of a backstory for their character to keep the conversations going. Overall, it was a great night and everyone really got into it! Only 4 people guessed the murderer. We can’t wait to do it again sometime! The packet is a bit overwhelming at first, but had everything you needed!

I was the Engineer Drew – May 10, 2021

Headline : All characters were spot on in their roles

Nickname : I was the Engineer Drew

Menu Highlights : Charcuterie board. Pineapple boats with chicken, black beans, rice. Dessert was a choice between key lime or chocolate cream pie. Wine, Martini (deep blue sea), and Cosmos were served to guests.

I had 26 people participate. Dinner and music set up for the yacht scene in my basement. Shipwrecked scene in a different room. I had a charcuterie board, bar (with bartenders), and served pineapple boats for dinner. I played the downloadable storm sounds on my bluetooth speaker

Chele – January 7, 2021

Headline : Even small groups can have so much fun with this!

Nickname : Chele

Menu Highlights : Finger foods. Shrimp cocktail, charcuterie board sausage roll, veggie tray, etc.

Theme Highlights : Cruise ship railing backdrop, island beach backdrop, rubber ducks

I had a small (11 people) house party and decided to try something different. I read through a lot of the reviews to see if doing it with such a small group would be OK and couldn’t find that much, but figured I’d take a shot and try. Well let me tell you, it was a BLAST!! I almost feel like I it was better with such a small setting. Reviews like this are hard because you don’t want to give away too much. I did purchase a few backdrops that fit the theme to turn areas into my house into areas that fit the mystery. I also ordered small rubber ducks to use during the 2nd act (if you’re a cruiser, you will see the tie between the yellow ducks and the 2nd half and my whole group are cruisers so it was even more fun). We did not do “dinner” but just aps and it worked out fine. With a small group, you don’t have all the staff so not having dinner working out better I think. I thought at the end, everyone would figure it out, everyone would know all the answers to the questions, nope. Out of 11 people, only 2 got it right! That made it for even more fun because then we spent over an hour with everyone saying how and why they answered the way they did. We did dress up and I think that made it even more fun. If you’re thinking about doing this, but have a small group, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

Disappointed Youth Leader – December 15, 2020

Headline : Inappropiate

Nickname : Disappointed Youth Leader

I bought this pack for a Christmas Breakup Party with teenagers. I am aware that it was classified as adult (there aren’t many youth ones that are actually good!) I previously bought another adult one and was hoping that they would be similar…unfortunately this was not the case! It wasn’t until I bought the kit and looked through the in-depth story line and character profiles that I realised how inappropriate this one was!

Gabriel – October 29, 2020

Headline : Great fun for everyone

Nickname : Gabriel

Set Sail for Disaster was a wonderful party for my group of friends! This being my first murder mystery party I was pretty nervous but everything was very well explained in the packet. Everyone had a wonderful time and we have decided to make a murder mystery party an annual event!

Mike – June 29, 2020

Headline : Set sail for a really fun evening

Nickname : Mike

Menu Highlights : Appetizers: coconut shrimp, bruschetta, fresh fruit Main course: baked fish with green beans and risotto Dessert: key lime pie and mango pound cake Drinks: mojitos, sex on the beach, and (of course) wine

Theme Highlights : For decor: fresh flowers, bright lights, anchor prints, a video of the ocean on loop on the TV. For props: tried to get objects or pictures to match each clue (rope, boxes, etc.). Used Easter eggs to hide food/water tokens!

Though the party was postponed multiple times due to Covid-19, it ended up being a ton of fun! Guests were very into debating which clues to view, and the murderer was very close to getting away with it! We had the second half of the evening outside, and used Easter eggs as the clues and tokens (since we didn’t actually get to celebrate Easter this year). Overall, everyone enjoyed the party and we are all already looking forward to the next one.

Hailee – December 3, 2019

Headline : A great night.

Nickname : Hailee

Menu Highlights : We decided to have more small bites to pass around and started the party a bit later to accommodate friends with kids.

Theme Highlights : We did use decorations but we could have added more. We played dinner music as guests arrived. We used the TV to show a storm outside and a ships engine sound in the side room. The names tags are a must and everyone dressed in costume.

We had a great time with this game. This was my first murder mystery, and the guide book was helpful. Our guests had a great time.

Addison – November 26, 2019

Headline : A new Halloween Tradition!

Nickname : Addison

This is our second murder mystery from Playing with Murder and we couldn’t be happier! It’s become a great Halloween tradition for us. Everyone goes all in and has a great time. The packet is very thorough, and really makes the whole event seamless. We had SO many people want to participate, that I had to make up (duplicate) some of the roles and it went really well. PWM did a great job making a lot of items optional so you can customize based on your crowd, while still keeping it fun and engaging. In our version, NOBODY guessed the murderer which kept it really tight and close to the very end! PWM also put in a nice “twist” from the other party we held that kept things interesting up until the very end.

Justine – November 11, 2019

Headline : A fantastic murder mystery!

Nickname : Justine

My party had about 17 people which was a great number of people. Most people were able to easily get into character and dress up to suit their character. The PDF was laid out so well it was very easy to host this party and make sure everyone had fun.

justinewalker – November 11, 2019

Nickname : justinewalker

I hosted this game for a group of men and women who were acquaintances for a get-together. It went really well, everyone dressed up and got into their character. Most people commented on how fun it was at the end. I did minimal decorating, and it seemed that everyone was still able to get into the story. I did not serve dinner, but served snacks, and the party lasted about 2 hours, with about 17 people. This was a good number of people. The PDF is laid out so well, I had never been to a murder mystery party nor had I hosted one, but this one went so smoothly considering how much there is to do. The PDF is really great 😀

Cathi – October 5, 2019

Headline : Book Club Murder Mystery - We loved it!

Nickname : Cathi

Menu Highlights : We served an Italian chicken dish, salad, fruit, and a charcuterie board. We served a variety of wines and a special cruise drink, the "Deep Blue Sea".

Theme Highlights : We actually had a lot of fun with the "cruise" theme. We decorated almost all the rooms in the house. We labeled the doorways with small chalk boards for the galley, the dining room, the Lido deck, and the guest rooms. All of the guest rooms had anchors on them with room numbers. We decorated both the kitchen table and the dining room table with blue table mats and napkins. We had center pieces that had candles, blue stones, and seashells in them. We set up a bulletin board that had the "guest" list on it and trip information on it. We created boarding passes that had basic identification information on it, their "room" number, and which dining room they were assigned to for the evening. We placed nautical elements all over the house. We even had a towel animal in the bathroom. We played beach music in the background. We purchased nautical napkins for dinner service and dessert service. We had special cups for the cruise cocktail. We just tried to make it is a fun as possible.

Murder Mystery Book Club Meeting

My book club had just finished reading a murder mystery that took place on a yacht trip, so this fit perfectly. It is an all female club, so I enlisted the help of my family and friends to play the male roles for the evening. Everyone stepped right into their roles and they all had an amazing time! The loved all the certificates for solving the mystery, best acting, and best costume. It is was the best book club meeting. We can’t wait to do it again!

Nfulkmd – October 3, 2019

Headline : Murder Cruise Fun

Nickname : Nfulkmd

Menu Highlights : Bruschetta, chicken wings, crockpot meatballs, charcuterie board, caprese kabobs,

Theme Highlights : Cruise backdrop. I made some origami towel animals and had them scattered around the rooms. Used the audio files included

We had a blast on the Set Sail for Disaster Murder cruise. We had 18 guests and that was the perfect number. We knew 2 of our guests would be late so they had to arrive “via helicopter” as the ship had already set sail! Some of our guests REALLY got into their parts. We had bought a cruise ship backdrop, which I wish we had hung higher so it was more visible in the photos. I got it off amazon for a decent price. I bought some other sailing and beach related decorations, too. Food was simple with chicken wings, charcuterie board (I made myself!), and trays of bruschetta. This was my 2nd Playing with Murder party and everyone is looking forward to the next one!

Nancy, Teen Librarian – September 6, 2019

Headline : Tropical Disaster Fun!

Nickname : Nancy, Teen Librarian

Ella Johnson Library hosted its third annual Murder Mystery event on a Friday after hours at the library. Teens had to register ahead of time and pick up a character sheet, so they could come in costume the night of the event. Over 20 youth came for a pizza dinner while they mingled in character. After the murder, survivors of the shipwreck had to figure out who the murderer was while also trying to survive on a tropical island.

The owner and author of this company, Ken Blumreich, was able to give us modified roles that were appropriate for a teen audience. The event was a spooktacular success thanks to Playing With Murder!

Cheri – August 2, 2019

Headline : Set Sail for Success!

Nickname : Cheri

We had a great time with this. It was all spelled out for us and the group loved the scavenger hunt as well. It got very competitive in a fun way and I loved that my guests dressed the part. I actually did this for 97 people and the on lookers really enjoyed the 24 that acted out their parts. I simply incorporated in a longer mingling time. I will be doing another one. Thanks guys.

Library Party – July 2, 2019

Headline : Library Event: Murder Mystery Party

Nickname : Library Party

Menu Highlights : I served cupcakes and juice.

We put this event on as a library program. The patrons enjoyed it. I didn’t serve dinner and it took about an hour in total. Assigning characters through the registration process was time consuming and difficult. If I did it again I would assign characters at the door.

There were more adult relations that I’d hoped for in the backstory of Set Sail for Disaster. I wish there was a better way to preview the script.

Follow these steps to host this mystery:

Mystery Parties involve a combination of improvisational acting, storytelling, and creative problem solving. Each guest will play the part of that character throughout the course of the game. Each character has specific personality traits, goals, secrets, and information, all of which are included in the character sheet; a big part of the fun is getting into character and taking on a new, exciting role.

At some point during the party, an Event will occur that will force the players to come together in order to solve a problem or unravel a mystery. Traditionally, the Event in question will be the murder of one of the characters (as played by a guest), but the parties crafted by Playing With Murder often use this basic framework to accommodate different types of Events, thereby ensuring that your guests will be surprised and entertained (even if they are veteran murder mystery party players).

Your guests will need to use the information that their characters know (as well as additional clues that are provided during the game) to solve the mystery or overcome the problem posed by the Event. Typically this culminates in the guests voting on the identity of the murderer, but again, different parties will have different specific goals. All of our parties also come complete with additional subgames (treasure hunts, unique character goals and special puzzles) that are guaranteed to keep the action intense and your guests motivated and focused.

Expanded Game For Large Groups

If you have extra players, there are two ways that you can accommodate everyone:

  • Investigator Role – Additional players have the option of playing the role of “Investigators”. In this role the players are not suspects and do not have character backgrounds but can question the suspects and try to solve the mystery along with the other players. Expanded Games include a PDF guide that explains how to use the Investigator role, as well as printable character sheets and name tags for anyone that is playing an Investigator.

Both the standard and expanded games are included with the purchase of any game kit.

Murder on Two Wheels

Murderous Pursuits is a Victorian-era assassination game in the style of The Ship

It's out in March.

Remember 2006's The Ship ? It was a rather good assassination game about identifying your target (another player) among a sea of NPCs milling about a cruise liner and taking them out without anybody noticing, all the while making sure you didn't end up with a knife in your back. Blazing Griffin bought the game in 2011 and took to Kickstarter to fund a follow-up called The Ship: Full Steam Ahead, but fell short of its goal. However, now the developer is back with Murderous Pursuits, which looks impressive and is a sequel to The Ship in all but name.

It even takes place on a ship, but this time it's floating in the sky as part of a steampunk Victorian-era alternate reality. The Ship's Mr X returns to hand out a list of targets to you and up to seven other players, and it's your job to get the job done without leaving any witnesses. To hide from your opponents you can blend into the crowd at "vignettes", which are locations that will let you hide in plain sight by taking part in "highbrow activities" with NPCs, like admiring art or discussing foreign policy.

You'll also be able to equip items to help you do the deed, including temporary disguises, flash grenades, and objects that counter any assassination attempts on you.

The visuals in the trailer above look great, and the art style really reminds me of Dishonored, in a good way. You'll murder across a number of maps using numerous weapons, so you shouldn't get bored. And if you'd rather play against the computer, you can fill the other player slots with bots.

The best part is that it's out in less than two months. We don't have an exact release date yet, but it'll be here in March. Here's the game's website .

Overboard! - a woman surveys a ship, thinking about what to do next

Overboard! is a replayable detective game where you play a woman on a ship in the 1930s, trying to solve the murder of your husband. There’s just one twist, and it’s a great one: You’re the one who killed him, so you’re just trying to pin the blame on someone and escape to America scot-free. Finally, a game where I can girlboss, gatekeep, and gaslight!

Overboard! is a visual novel by Inkle, a studio known for high-quality narrative games such as 80 Days and Heaven’s Vault. The player navigates the ship and selects their dialogue from menus. The other characters you meet on the ship are fleshed out, and they remember everything they see you do and say. You may have to bribe, convince, or even kill other passengers. And if anyone catches you doing a second murder, well, now your trip is just shot all to hell.

Overboard! is available on iOS, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC for $14.99.

Rogue Wave Strikes Cruise Ship, Killing a Passenger and Injuring 4 Others

The passengers were hurt after a large, unpredictable wave hit the ship, which was traveling toward the Antarctic, Viking Cruises said.

By Amanda Holpuch

A passenger died and four others were injured after a large, unexpected wave hit a cruise ship traveling toward a popular launching point for expeditions to Antarctica, Viking Cruises said.

The ship, the Viking Polaris, was struck by a “rogue wave” on Tuesday at 10:40 p.m. local time while traveling toward Ushuaia, Argentina, which is on the southern tip of South America, Viking Cruises said in a statement .

Viking Cruises did not say how the passenger was killed or provide the passenger’s name. The four passengers who were injured were treated by onboard medical staff and had non-life-threatening injuries, Viking Cruises said.

A State Department official said that a U.S. citizen died and that the department was offering consular assistance to the person’s family.

Rogue waves are unpredictable, typically twice the size of surrounding waves and often come from a different direction than the surrounding wind and waves, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . Scientists are still trying to figure out how and when these uncommon waves form.

Ann Mah, of Topeka, Kan., told the news station WIBW that she and her husband were on the ship when it was hit by the wave and that it was “just like your whole house got shook really hard.”

“I mean, it was just a thud,” Ms. Mah said.

The Viking Polaris was launched this year and was designed for travel to remote destinations such as the Antarctic Peninsula. The ship is 665 feet long and can carry 378 passengers and 256 crew members.

The ship sustained “limited damage” from the wave and arrived in Ushuaia the day after it was struck, Viking Cruises said.

The cruise company canceled the Viking Polaris’s next scheduled trip, a 13-day cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula.

“We are investigating the facts surrounding this incident and will offer our support to the relevant authorities,” the company said.

Tourism to the Antarctic has steadily increased in the last 30 years, with 74,401 people traveling there in the 2019-20 season, according to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators. Roughly 6,700 people traveled there in the 1992-93 season, according to the association.

In recent years, some observers have warned that the increase in tourism may not be sustainable and that it could threaten visitor safety or disrupt the fragile environment, which is already straining under the effects of climate change.

It is the beginning of the Antarctic tourism season, which coincides with its summer, beginning in late October or early November and usually lasting until March.

The death on the Viking Cruises ship this week comes after the death of two other cruise ship passengers in the Antarctic last month. Two Quark Expeditions cruise ship passengers died after one of the ship’s heavy duty inflatable Zodiac boats overturned near shore, Seatrade Cruise News reported .

'Rogue wave' hits Viking cruise ship, killing 1 passenger and injuring 4 others

One person died and four others were injured after a "rogue wave" hit the Viking Polaris cruise ship while it was sailing toward Ushuaia, Argentina, on Tuesday night, officials said.

“It is with great sadness that we confirmed a guest passed away following the incident,” Viking said in a statement Thursday. “We have notified the guest’s family and shared our deepest sympathies. We will continue to offer our full support to the family in the hours and days ahead.”

The name and hometown of the passenger was not released, but Argentine authorities identified her as a 62-year-old American who was hit by broken glass when the wave broke cabin windows, according to The Associated Press .

The four other guests had non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment from doctors and medical staff onboard.

Rogue waves, or extreme storm waves, are uncommon, unpredictable and "greater than twice the size of surrounding waves," according to the National Ocean Service . They are described as "walls of water" in most reports.

The Viking Polaris anchored in Ushuaia, Argentina, on Dec. 1, 2022.

Suzie Gooding, who was on the ship when the incident happened, recalled feeling like they'd hit an iceberg, according to NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh, North Carolina.

“Everything was fine until the rogue wave hit, and it was just sudden. Shocking,” Gooding told the news station. “We didn’t know if we should get our gear ready for abandoning ship.”

The ship "sustained limited damage during the incident" and arrived in Ushuaia Wednesday afternoon, Viking said in its statement.

"We are investigating the facts surrounding this incident and will offer our support to the relevant authorities," the company said. "Our focus remains on the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew, and we are working directly with them to arrange return travel."

The Viking Polaris’ next departure, the Antarctic Explorer cruise scheduled for Dec. 5-17, was canceled due to the incident.

Cruise worker accused of stabbing woman and 2 security guards with scissors on ship headed to Alaska

Updated on: May 8, 2024 / 6:27 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska's capital city, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel, according to authorities.

The U.S. attorney's office says the man, identified as 35-year-old Ntando Sogoni,  is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Online court records do not show an attorney for the 35-year-old man.

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital of Juneau, and British Columbia.

The alleged incident happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska. According to the affidavit, during the late evening on Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical center for an evaluation.

BIZ-CORONAVIRUS-CRUISELINES-CDC-OS

While there, he "became irrational and attempted to leave," and "physically attacked" a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states. He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a "shipboard jail," the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney's office says.

If convicted, Sogoni faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence.

Cruise ship worker accused of stabbing multiple people with scissors on board vessel bound for Alaska

A South African man has been arrested by the FBI after allegedly stabbing multiple people with medical scissors on a cruise ship .

Ntando Sogoni, 35, was working aboard the Norwegian Encore when other employees saw him trying to deploy a lifeboat on Sunday evening in waters west of Vancouver Island, prompting security to escort him to the ship’s medical centre for an assessment.

The worker was recently hired by Norwegian Cruise Line and had joined the ship in Seattle on Sunday, according to the arrest affidavit.

The cruise was set for a weeklong trip with stops scheduled in ports such as Juneau, Alaska and British Columbia in Canada.

When he arrived for his medical assessment, Mr Sogoni “became irrational and attempted to leave,” according to the affidavit.

In the early hours of Monday, Mr Sogoni allegedly physically attacked a security guard and a nurse inside the examination room, before he ran to another room where a woman, a 75-year-old US citizen, was being examined, according to a news release from Alaska’s District Attorney’s Office said.

He grabbed a pair of scissors, the attorney’s office said, and plunged them into the woman’s arm, hand and face, stabbing her multiple times.

Mr Sogoni then allegedly stabbed two security guards who intervened and were trying to detain him, stabbing one of them in the head and another in the back and shoulders, authorities said.

None of the injuries sustained by the victims were life-threatening.

The cruise ship worker was detained and held in the ship’s jail until the vessel arrived in Juneau on Tuesday.

He has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.

If convicted, Mr Sogoni faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and a $250,000 fine for each count.

The Independent has contacted Norwegian Cruise Line for comment. Online court records do not show an attorney for Mr Sogoni.

Rogue wave hits cruise ship sailing to Argentina, killing one passenger

A rogue wave hit a cruise ship while it was traveling toward Argentina, killing one passenger and injuring four others, Viking Cruises said on Thursday.

The company said in a statement that the wave hit its Viking Polaris ship around 10:40 p.m. local time on Tuesday as it sailed to the city of Ushuaia, which is located on the southern tip of Argentina.

“It is with great sadness that we confirmed a guest passed away following the incident. We have notified the guest’s family and shared our deepest sympathies. We will continue to offer our full support to the family in the hours and days ahead,” the company said.

Viking Cruises said the ship sustained limited damage from the wave and arrived in port in Ushuaia without further incident on Wednesday afternoon. Four passengers received non-life-threatening injuries, and the ship’s doctor and medical staff treated them.

“Our focus remains on the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew, and we are working directly with them to arrange return travel,” the company said.

Viking Cruises decided to cancel its next trip, scheduled for Dec. 5 to Dec. 17, after “careful consideration.”

A rogue wave is a large, unexpected and dangerous wave that is greater than twice the size of surrounding waves, according to the National Ocean Service. Rogue waves are considered unpredictable and come from directions other than prevailing winds and waves.

Reports of rogue waves, which are considered rare, have described them as “walls of water.”

One person aboard the Viking cruise told Raleigh, N.C., NBC affiliate WRAL that passengers wondered if they hit an iceberg when the wave hit.

Cruise worker accused of stabbing a 75-year-old and 2 guards with scissors on vessel bound for Alaska

cruise ship killing game

The cruise ship Norweigan Encore leaves the Port of Juneau on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021. (James Brooks / ADN)

A newly hired cruise employee was arrested by the FBI after federal prosecutors said he repeatedly stabbed a woman receiving medical attention on the ship and two security guards who tried to stop him.

The attack involving medical scissors unfolded May 6 after the worker, a 35-year-old South African man, was caught trying to deploy a lifeboat from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship west of Vancouver Island, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska.

Ntando Sogoni boarded the Norwegian Encore a day earlier in Seattle, Washington, an affidavit says. The ship was scheduled to make three stops in Alaska and one in British Columbia before it was to return to Seattle on May 12, according to the affidavit.

Information regarding Sogoni’s legal representation wasn’t immediately available on May 8.

On May 6, the ship’s security escorted Sogoni to the vessel’s medical center for an evaluation after he tried to deploy the lifeboat, prosecutors said.

At the center, he “became irrational and attempted to leave” and “physically attacked a security guard and a male nurse,” according to the affidavit.

He ran to another exam room, where a 75-year-old patient was inside, and grabbed a pair of medical scissors, the affidavit says.

Sogoni stabbed the woman in her arm, hand and face, then stabbed two security guards, according to prosecutors.

He stabbed one guard in the head and stabbed the other guard’s back and shoulders, prosecutors said.

The woman and security guards survived their injuries, which weren’t life-threatening, according to the affidavit.

A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told McClatchy News in an emailed statement May 8 that the woman and guards received treatment from the ship’s medical staff.

Other security personnel detained Sogoni in a shipboard jail until the vessel arrived at its first destination in Juneau, the affidavit says.

“He became violent without provocation,” according to the Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson, who confirmed that Sogoni was newly employed as a crew member.

On May 7, the FBI arrested Sogoni, and he was charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction, prosecutors announced in a news release.

“We condemn violent behavior of this nature and are committed to the safety and security of all crew members and guests on our ships. We commend the onboard security team for their brave actions,” the Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said.

“Senior ship leadership have been actively engaged and continue to closely monitor all involved with the support of senior company executives who immediately traveled to Juneau to meet, escort and assist the (guests).”

If Sogoni is convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count against him, prosecutors said.

Cruise ship worker accused of stabbing 3 people with scissors on board vessel bound for Alaska

  • Copy Link copied

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska’s capital city, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel, according to authorities.

The U.S. attorney’s office says the man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.

According to the affidavit, during the ‘late evening” Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical center for an evaluation.

While there, he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” and “physically attacked” a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states. He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a “shipboard jail,” the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney’s office says.

Ukraine war latest: 'Undeclared Russian military intelligence officer' expelled from UK

The Home Office has expelled a Russian defence attaché as part of a series of measures against Moscow. James Cleverly said the attaché was an "undeclared military intelligence officer". Ask our military analysts or international correspondents a question in the box below.

Kosovo's foreign minister has said her country is convinced Russia must lose the war in Ukraine for conflict not to spread further in Europe.

Donika Gervalla-Schwarz said her young nation's support for Ukraine was unconditional - despite Kyiv not having recognised Kosovo's independence.

Ms Gervalla-Schwarzd her small Balkan nation, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, is repeatedly reminded of the aggressive intentions of both Serbia and its ally Russia.

"Ukraine hasn't recognised the Republic of Kosovo as a state, but we really believe that we know exactly what Ukraine is going through," she told The Associated Press in an interview.

"And we know that there is only one solution, not only for Ukraine, but for Europe," she said.

"It can only be Russia to lose the war and Ukraine to win this war. Otherwise, Europe should prepare for other conflicts in our continent."

The people of Kosovo were the targets of war crimes and other atrocities by Serbia's security forces in the 1990s, an experience that led Kosovo to seek independence.

"While Kosovo is a small state with very modest possibilities to help, we have tried to be very helpful with Ukraine and have not hesitated to show our unconditional support and sympathy to the people and to the state of Ukraine," Ms Gervalla-Schwarz said.

Lord Cameron has called the UK's measures on a Russian defence attache "an unequivocal message" to Moscow.

The foreign secretary was replying to James Cleverly's post on X in which he said the Home Office expelled a Russian defence attache as part of a series of measures against the country.

Other measures in the package include removing the diplomatic premises status from several Russian owned properties in the UK and capping the amount of time Russian diplomats can spend in the UK.

Budapest is once again raising eyebrows across the world's biggest military alliance as it pledges to defy a NATO initiative.

The alliance's long-term plan to support Ukraine militarily was agreed in April, but was dubbed a "crazy mission" by Hungary's foreign minister today.

Under the plans, NATO would take over some coordination work from a US-led coalition known as the Ramstein group.

Discussing the plans today, Peter Szijjarto said: "Hungary will stay out of NATO's crazy mission despite all the pressure."

Relations between Budapest and NATO have soured because of Hungary's foot-dragging over the ratification of Sweden's NATO accession - finally passed by Budapest in March - and also over nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban's close ties with Moscow.

The Russian embassy in London has said there will be "an appropriate response" after Britain expelled a Russian defence attache.

The embassy said the restrictions that had been imposed were done under a "groundless and ridiculous pretext", according to Russian state news agency TASS.

It comes after Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was reported as telling journalists that the Kremlin will respond appropriately following the expulsion.

Dominic Waghorn, international affairs editor

It's always assumed defence attaches play some kind of role gatherling intelligence and that is generally tolerated by their host countries.

They could be gathering data about weapons production for instance or ship building but there is a line they are expected not to cross.

The assumption here is that the Russians have broken the rules of the game.

But the British government will have thought long and hard before expelling the Russian. It doesn't come without cost.

In their day jobs defence attaches play a crucial role in liaising with their hosts.  That can be very important in terms of avoiding misunderstandings that could lead to unnecessary and dangerous escalation.

Losing Russia’s defence attache in London deprives the UK of one more line of liaison at a time when clear understanding and clarification could be essential to avoiding deepening conflict.

That is not ideal at a time of war.

What is not clear is how much these moves are connected specifically to the conduct of the Russians involved or should they actually be seen more as another chapter in the diplomatic war underway between Russia and the UK.

The UK has undoubtedly weakened Russia's ability to spy in the UK and gather intelligence but these measures will also affect Britain's ability to predict and avoid potential escalation.

That will be made even worse if Russia, as may be expected, responds with like-for-like retaliation

Seven people have been injured by Russian shelling in eastern Kharkiv, according to the region's governor.

Oleg Synegubov said among those wounded was an eight-year-old girl and three boys, two aged 14 and the other 15.

"Two [of the] boys are in serious condition, [the other] boy and [the] girl are in average condition," he said.

One 55-year-old civilian of unspecified gender was also hospitalised.

Two women had minor injuries.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has offered his thoughts on the expulsion of a Russian defence attache the government has accused of being an undeclared military intelligence officer.

"Today we've expelled Russia's defence attache who has been working as an intelligence officer for Putin in the UK," he said on X.

"We will not tolerate Putin’s efforts to undermine our nation and democracy and will continue to stand up for freedom here and in Ukraine."

Each week we ask readers for their questions on the war for our military analysts and international correspondents.

This week,  military analyst Sean Bell  answers:

Why is Ukraine focusing its drone attacks on oil refineries rather than near the front lines? Mike

Thanks, Mike, for this topical question.

Although the ultimate metric of success in this brutal war is territory gained, to achieve that outcome requires a more complex strategy than simply focusing on the frontline battle.

One of the reasons that the Royal Air Force was formed as an independent service was the recognition that greater impact could often be achieved by targeting enemy logistics and supply lines behind the frontline, rather than simply focusing effort on the "close battle".

Military action is ultimately driven by political will to achieve a desired end-state; the military simply creates the conditions in which a political outcome can be achieved.

At the tactical level of warfare, the focus is on the battles of individual soldiers and units prevailing against tactical targets.

However, at the other end of the spectrum, senior military strategists seek to attack the enemy's "centre of gravity" - the one thing that the enemy cannot afford to lose and thus must protect at all costs.

'Fight smarter'

In the Second World War, much of the Allied bombing effort was targeting German industrial capacity, as without the ability to regenerate military equipment and ammunition, the war would not be sustainable.

Ukraine has a smaller army than Russia, and so any conventional attritional battle would favour Russia.

Therefore, Ukraine has to try to "fight smarter" and erode Russia's will - or capacity - to fight.

A war on this scale consumes huge quantities of resource, which has to be funded in some way.

Russia's oil exports fund Vladimir Putin's military campaign and also pay for imports of vital munitions from North Korea and Iran.

By targeting the enemy's oil facilities Ukraine will be aiming to reduce Russia's export capacity, which in turn impacts Russia's ability to fund the war.

That might not help the close battle, but could undermine Russia's commitment to a longer-duration conflict.

And, although drones are an "irritation" to the frontline forces, the quantity of explosives they are able to deliver is relatively small, so their effect is relatively limited.

However, an oil facility is very vulnerable to a relatively small-scale explosion, which can spread swiftly to destroy a crucial part of Russia's critical national infrastructure - more bang per buck.

So, although Ukraine desperately needs to stop Russia from breaking through its frontlines, we can expect to see Ukraine continue to target energy infrastructure as part of a broader strategy in its war with Russia.

We now have more details regarding the freshly expelled Russian defence attache we reported on in our 1.10pm post.

The attache accused by the Home Office of being an undeclared military intelligence officer spying for the Kremlin is Colonel Maxim Elovik.
