dark journey 1937 wiki

In the spring of 1918, Swiss modiste Madeleine Goddard returns to Stockholm after an excursion to Paris to buy dresses. Madeleine, who is a spy for the Nazis, then visits her German contacts and gives them the information she has gathered on Allied troop movements. Madeleine's information is cleverly sewn into the gowns she transports, and the Germans believe that she is one of their top spies. Unknown to them, Madeleine is actually a French double agent, and so she resolves to learn the identity of the new German secret service section leader who is being stationed in Stockholm. While Madeleine confers with her confederates, two German citizens cross the border into Switzerland. One is Dr. Muller, who is to reorganize the spy network of which Madeleine is a part, and the other is Baron Karl Von Marwitz, a deserter from the German Navy. While at a nightclub with her frequent escort, English secret service agent Bob Carter, Madeleine exposes the trick behind Von Marwitz's game of predicting what a girl will say after he kisses her. Intrigued by Madeleine's beauty and cool demeanor, Von Marwitz visits her shop the next day in the company of Lupita, a Brazilian socialite. Von Marwitz quickly tires of the temperamental Lupita and begins asking Madeleine to go out with him. When she continually refuses his requests, he begins to buy all of the stock in her shop until finally she gives in. Madeleine gives her German contacts information about an Allied counter-offensive, then begins seeing Von Marwitz. Despite their different nationalities, the couple quickly fall in love, much to the dismay of Bob, who returns to Stockholm after a brief journey to London to investigate Madeleine's trustworthiness. On the night Von Marwitz proposes to her, Madeleine's faithful porter and co-conspirator, Anatole Bergen, is murdered. Shaken by Anatole's death, Madeleine confers with Muller and the others, who tell her that the information she provided proved disastrous for the German Army. Muller orders her to go to Paris immediately and determine whether her French contacts are to be trusted. After a difficult journey, Madeleine reaches Paris, where she is secretly greeted by a French official and given the medal militaire for her service to her country. Upon her return to Stockholm, Madeleine deduces that Von Marwitz is the German secret service leader, and he reveals his knowledge that she is actually a French spy. The lovers are glad to be rid of the lies between them, but acknowledge with heavy hearts that their dream of a life together can never be realized. Madeleine rushes to Bob, who promises to help her escape from Stockholm and the Germans, while Von Marwitz is simultaneously planning her capture. The next day, Bob engineers Madeleine's arrest by the Swedish police, thereby foiling Von Marwitz's plan to apprehend her quietly. Madeleine is deported, but once the boat she is on has sailed out of Swedish jurisdiction, it is stopped by a German submarine. Von Marwitz boards and arrests Madeleine for being a French spy, but his plans are once again foiled by Bob's cunning plans. Disguised as a tramp steamer, a British destroyer enters the scene and engages the submarine in battle. The Germans are defeated, Madeleine is rescued and Von Marwitz is captured. Madeleine is assured that Von Marwitz will not be shot, but will instead be detained until the end of the war, and with the hope of a future together, the lovers wave goodbye as Von Marwitz is taken aboard the destroyer.

This is quite an exciting tale of WWI espionage with Vivien Leigh and Conrad Veidt caught up in a clever web of international intrigues in Sweden. Her British handler asks her to keep an eye of newly arrived German "deserter" Veidt ("Karl") who is secretly there to identify and break their clever network. James

Review by James ★★★

At this point I'll watch anything with Conrad Veidt in it and here his performance, curiously paired with a pre- Gone with the Wind Vivien Leigh as the female lead rescues what is another run of the mill 1930s British espionage yarn from mediocrity.

Victor Saville's direction is smooth and refined, using elaborate tracking shots to great effect and he rightfully makes Leigh look absolutely radiant in every frame - even the strange looking Veidt is suave and gentlemanly, lacking the usual menace of his typecasting. Together they give polished and nuanced performances that despite lacking enough time to develop convincing chemistry, do manage to sell the romance.

The convolutions of the spy thriller plot are distracting and frequently confusing, the action heavy climax is the least interesting part of what could have been a fascinating romance with a more creative script. Forgettable, but occasionally compelling.

Conrad Veidt and Vivien Leigh, two of the most watchable faces in cinema, star in a World War I espionage drama, featuring agents, double agents and, for all I know, triple agents. It criss-crosses between Paris, Stockholm and Berlin via many a precarious sea voyage, with the fashion-fixated Victor Saville at the helm, steering an entertaining course, if a rather foggy one. To think what Alfred Hitchcock could have done with this material - he certainly would have sharpened its clarity. But the production looks darn stylish, as was Mr Saville's habit, and we have those fabulous faces to gaze at, as they gaze into each others' eyes.

I'd heard of Dark Journey before, but it wasn't until I got completely sucked into the recent biography of Vivien Leigh called Dark Star that my interest was really piqued. The biography discussed how the plot is difficult to follow because of something like 15 minutes being cut for the final version (which surprised me since it's a scant 78 minute movie in its final form) but that even with some faulty plot problems the chemistry between Veidt and Leigh is still palpable. After watching the film itself, I have to agree. The spy plot is hard to keep a handle on but in all honesty it works perfectly well for the story of intricate spy work of opposing forces…

A World War 1 spy drama where the actors show much greater quality then the ones writing the script. Not surprising considering it's veteran Conrad Veidt and fresh Vivien Leigh on the top billing! But this story could have been simplified. Greatly so. Spies and where their loyalty are and who is screwing the other one over? Wasn't all that well explained. But thankfully we had a stern Veidt keeping his calm in the middle of the confusion stabilizing it all.

What's even more interesting was a young Vivien Leigh giving a stunning performance. Just watch the scene where they reveal their identities! What a expressing shot of Leigh's face! Few have looked more beautiful!

vivien leigh and conrad veidt's chemistry along with saville's direction really elevated the whole film! the dialogue was fun as well. leave it to a 30s film to wrap up a romance-espionage-war drama under 80 minutes. in the end, there is no dramatic music, only the howling of the wind and the sound of the stormy waves, leaving a chilling impression

Conrad Veidt: [drifting out of focus as he journeys away] me: so this is the end of the dream

This WWI spy thriller was really undercooked and confusing, but it had Vivien Leigh and Conrad Veidt and a lamp with a map on it, so against my better judgment, I can't rate it lower.

"And what have you been doing while I've been flirting with death and destruction?"

Kind of an interesting idea but it doesn't do enough with it to make it really worthwhile. And whoever thought it was was a good idea to pair Conrad Veidt with Vivien Leigh was crazy, he's super stiff here and they have no chemistry together which makes the whole thing fail. At least Vivien Leigh is good in this, she really gives it her all, and it's cool to see her a couple of years before her star-making preformance in Gone With The Wind .

Dark Journey

In the spring of 1918, a German U-boat stops a Dutch freighter on its way to Stockholm, Sweden during the final year of World War I. The Germans board the ship, identify one man as a Belgian spy, and take him prisoner. One of the passengers questioned is an attractive Swiss dress shop owner named Madeleine Goddard (Vivien Leigh) who is returning to Stockholm from a business trip to Paris, where she purchased dresses for her boutique. Dark Journey is a 1937 British spy film directed by Victor Saville and starring Conrad Veidt and Vivien Leigh. Written by Lajos Bíró and Arthur Wimperis, the film is about two secret agents on opposite sides during World War I who meet and fall in love in neutral Stockholm.

After returning to Stockholm, Madeleine, who is a German spy, meets with her contacts and provides information on Allied troop movements she acquired in Paris. The information is cleverly concealed in the gowns she purchased. While the Germans believe that she is one of their top spies, Madeleine is in fact a French double agent working to uncover the identity of the new German secret service leader in Stockholm.

After Madeleine is deported, her ship is stopped by a German U-boat in neutral waters. Von Marwitz boards the ship and arrests Madeleine for being a French spy. As they are being rowed from the ship to the U-boat, a British Q-ship (a heavily armed merchant ship with concealed weaponry) approaches and engages the U-boat in battle, sinking the enemy vessel. Madeleine is taken aboard the Q-ship while von Marwitz is moved to a British destroyer. Her feelings of love unabated, Madeleine is assured that von Marwitz will not be shot, but instead will be detained until the end of the war. As von Marwitz is rowed away, Madeleine waves and calls out to him, “I’ll be waiting.”

Back in Stockholm, Madeleine and Von Marwitz are reunited and she reveals that she knows he is the German secret service leader. In response, he reveals that he knows that she is in fact a French spy. Although relieved that they can finally speak honestly with each other, they acknowledge that their dream of a life together can never happen. Soon after, Madeleine turns to her friend Bob for protection, now that her true identity is known to the Germans. While Bob plans her escape from Stockholm and the Germans, Von Marwitz plans her capture and return to Germany. The next day, Bob arranges for Madeleine to be arrested by the Stockholm police, ruining Von Marwitz’s plan to capture her quietly.

Madeleine and Von Marwitz begin seeing each other socially, and despite their differences, they fall deeply in love. Von Marwitz even proposes marriage. Their whirlwind romance is interrupted one night when Madeleine’s German co-conspirator, Anatole Bergen, is murdered. Madeleine meets with her German contacts who inform her that the recent information she provided proved disastrous for the German Army. She is ordered to return to Paris immediately and investigate her French contacts. When Madeleine reaches Paris, she is met by a high-ranking French official who presents her with the Médaille militaire for her brave service to her country. Despite her reluctance to continue her work in Stockholm, she is ordered to return.

Soon after, a German war veteran named Baron Karl Von Marwitz (Conrad Veidt) enters Sweden. He claims to have left the German Navy because of war injuries, but some of his former colleagues believe he is a deserter. One night, Madeleine goes to a nightclub accompanied by her friend, English secret service agent Bob Carter (Anthony Bushell). She notices Von Marwitz playing a bar room game predicting what girls will say after he kisses them. After she exposes the trick, Von Marwitz becomes intrigued by Madeleine’s beauty and cool demeanor. The next day he visits her shop with Lupita (Joan Gardner), the Brazilian socialite he tricked the previous evening. After the temperamental Lupita leaves, Von Marwitz begins asking Madeleine to go out with him. In the coming days, she continues to refuse his requests, even after he offers to purchase all the stock in her shop. When he finally gives up, she gives in and agrees to date him.

Dark Journey is a romantic spy drama released in 1937 and directed by Victor Saville. The film features an impressive cast, including Conrad Veidt, Vivien Leigh, and Joan Gardner, and it takes place during the First World War. The movie follows the exploits of Madeleine Goddard, a German spy who falls in love with an undercover British agent.

Madeleine is a successful businesswoman who uses her status to gain access to valuable information needed by the German intelligence service. As the conflict between Germany and Great Britain grows, she is tasked with traveling to Spain to secure a vital military passage that will bolster Germany's position in the war.

Meanwhile, an English agent named Fitzroy, who goes by the cover name "Denis Dimbleby Bagley," is also sent to Spain on a mission to intercept and sabotage the German operations. Madeleine and Fitzroy meet each other accidentally, not realizing each other's true identity. They are immediately drawn to each other, their shared love of the same craft and their mutual respect gradually turning into a genuine emotional bond.

Their feelings for each other only serve to complicate their already perilous and incredibly difficult situations. Madeleine’s lover Baron von Marwitz, a senior Intelligence officer, is jealous of their fondness for each other, causing a rift with Madeleine that threatens to derail their operations. Furthermore, the suspicious Germans, hunt Fitzroy and start to follow Madeleine more closely, making it difficult to complete their respective tasks.

The tension ratchets up when the German spies capture Fitzroy and execute him. Madeleine is also threatened and could be revealed to be a traitor if the Germans discover her association with Fitzroy. The relationship between the two had deepened, making his death a crushing blow to her. Much of the rest of the movie follows Madeleine's own efforts to escape or deliver her mission, even after all that has happened, her passion, and her own bitterness at losing Fitzroy who still linger in her mind and heart, while Baron Von Marwitz remained willing to do what it took for her to reach Munich.

Dark Journey features excellent performances from the lead cast. Vivien Leigh, one of the most memorable actresses of the 1940s, portrays Madeleine with elegance and grace. Conrad Veidt, best known for his role in Casablanca, makes a strong impression as Baron von Marwitz. Gardner's emotional range allows her to create a richly nuanced character in her small role, one that could almost be called a fulcrum for the two other characters. Leigh and Veidt share an electric chemistry that helps drive the story, hitting all the right notes for their characters.

The film's script, by Lajos Biró and Arthur Wimperis, is outstanding, keeping the viewer engaged from start to finish. It deftly balances the story's dramatic and romantic elements, providing the foreground to the WWI espionage that is the movie's focus.

The movie’s location is another aspect of its allure. The setting is rich with angular and geometric shapes that serve to magnify feelings of mistrust and suspicion. The stark, unromanticized images used for the Spanish locale serve to emphasize the dire stakes of the characters' situations, and the sharp angles serve to echo the close quarters of spy work.

The cinematography, done by the Patrick Jackson, is moody and atmospheric, with a noticeable German Expressionist influence. Designer Alfred Junge's (Jung) set work is also notable, reflecting the Art Deco visual cues that were famous in the period while he also worked on the interiors to provide the details and layers that can be used by the actors.

In conclusion, Dark Journey is a compelling film, blending an emotionally charged romantic plotline with the intrigue and danger of international espionage. The acting is excellent throughout, and the script is well-crafted and consistently engaging. The dramatic setting, tense circumstances, and evocative bursts of amorous passion were celebrated at the time of release, and the movie remains an interesting and complex reminder of love amidst war.

Dark Journey is a 1937 romance movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 17 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2.

Storyline [ ]

Madeline Goddard is a smart young woman who owns a fashionable dress shop in neutral Sweden during World War One. Though she is grateful to avoid the fighting, the courageous and stunningly pretty Madeline feels she should be doing more for her native France. She volunteers to work as an intelligence agent, smuggling maps and other documents within the fashionable garments she ships to wealthy customers in London. Madeline's activities are so successful that British intelligence soon comes to rely on her as their main pipeline for information. At about this time, a British official in Sweden asks her to cultivate the friendship of Baron Karl Von Marwitz, a tall, distinguished-looking German officer who is in charge of counter-espionage activities at the German embassy. Unknown to Madeline, the baron has been sent to Sweden for the express purpose of discovering and eliminating the top British spy who has been smuggling out German war plans. When Madeline and Karl meet, each recognizes the other as a deadly foe. But a smoldering attraction seems to grow each time they see each other. Madeline is dazed by her conflicting feelings and attempts to run away; however Von Marwitz is able to board her ship on the high seas and capture her as a spy. Soon afterwards, his own ship is torpedoed by a British destroyer sent to rescue Madeline. The mortally wounded Baron Von Marwitz dies in her arms, confessing his love. Madeline is hailed as a hero but turns to look out to sea, shedding tears over her gallant German lover.

  7. Dark Journey (1937)

P erhaps bleakly anticipating the war that was to come, Dark Journey was one of a number of films made in Britain in the late 1930s that were set during the First World War and provided readymade propaganda entertainment for when WWII got underway in 1939. Another notable example was Michael Powell's The Spy in Black (1939), and it is no accident that the Germanic lead of this film and Dark ...

The convolutions of the spy thriller plot are distracting and frequently confusing, the action heavy climax is the least interesting part of what could have been a fascinating romance with a more creative script. 9. Dark Journey (1937)

The unorthodox teaming of Vivien Leigh and Conrad Veidt is but one of the many pleasures of the 1937 spy yarn Dark Journey. Leigh plays a Stockholm dress-shop owner during World War I, who, being a neutral, is permitted to travel unmolested to and from France. Veidt plays a supposedly disgraced German officer who is actually head of his country ...

  19. Dark Journey (1937)

In my opinion, "Dark Journey" is Vivien's greatest pre-GWTW movie. The script is full of memorable lines, but there are also some great romantic moments between the actors. The combination between Vivien and Conrad is just like having fire and ice in love. It's a palpable, strong, glacial romanticism.
