Safari Gold: 1971 Datsun 240Z

Bruce Johnson

This rare crossover series 1971 Datsun 240Z is sitting in Reno, Nevada waiting for its new owner. With just a day and half left in the bidding here on eBay , this car is already reached $60,100! The car appears to be in factory original condition with 121,700 miles. The car is painted in Safari Gold (Code 290) with an original black interior.

datsun safari gold

The numbers matching engine is a 2.4 liter inline six cylinder engine backed up by a 4 speed manual transmission. Designated as the L24, the 2,393 cc engine delivered 151 horsepower which was more than one horsepower per cubic inch. I looked at a similar car last year that was a 1 owner car but the undercoating was so thick, I would have spent all my spare time trying to get it off. I found out that the undercoating was covering up some repairs and passed on it. This car looks original and extremely clean.

datsun safari gold

The car was originally sold in El Paso, Texas but must have been well loved because there does not appear to be any sun damage to the black interior. There are two hairline cracks in the dash which is not too bad for a 49 year old car. The car is said to run and drive well and has recently had a tune up. The carpet, headliner, door panels, seats appear to be in original condition. When people say to buy the best, this car might be up there.

datsun safari gold

The Datsun 240Z took the US by storm with its amazing lines and excellent performance. Over 50,000 cars were built and sold in 1971. With prices exceeding $100,000 recently, this car may have some room to go. Let’s all take a guess at what the winning bid will be!

datsun safari gold

People say “buy the best car you can afford.” This is way, way past anything I could afford.

datsun safari gold

Hi All, Lets look at some facts There were ~148,000 240Z imported into the USA during the 4 model years, 1970 – 73. Yes approximately hundred and forty eight thousand, that a lot of cars! There was only one body style – no 2+2, no convertibles. The unique early cars will be worth the most to coiiectors (rear hatch vent cars, ETC,). Originality will usually bring the highest price (original paint, eng ETC,). At this point in time manual transmissions will bring the higher price. This many change as people get older or for people who never learned to drive a manual transmission.

So lets compare this to the E-type There were ~ 75,000 E-types made for the world, which the majority landing in the USA. There were 3 body styles for the Series I & II. open two seater (convertible), fixed head coupe and 2+2 fixed head coupe. The series III, there were only 2 body styles open two seater and 2+2 fixed head coupe. The unique early cars will be worth the most to coiiectors – outside bonnet lock cars and to a lesser extent the flat floor and welded louver cars.

So if you compare the 240Z to the E-type series I & II FHC (since there similar in design and engine). There ~30,000 E-type FHC built for the world compared to over 148,000 240Z exported to the USA. (~90% of the export volume), Almost 5 times as many 240Z. Now if you add in the 260Z and 280 Z 2 seat production that was exported to the USA that adds another 220,748 vehicles.

Both rusted very easily. My early 74 260Z front fenders had holes popping through by 77. I know the E-type and similar issues.

So in IMHO, it should be easier to find a nice to excellent 240Z at a reasonable price. Therefore the $100,000 paid recently for a 240Z is not the norm. The ~$40,000 to ~$60,000 cars should be a trailer queen and ~$15,000 to $35,000 should be the norm for nice to excellent cars. Several nice 240Z went for less that $20,000 on E-bay and BAT in the last month or so. This is just my humble opinion, which means Nothing. The buyers and sellers will determine the price.

datsun safari gold

240 Z’s are absolutely brilliant cars but 60K is ridiculous.

datsun safari gold

For this car especially since it’s had a repaint, and who knows what else.

datsun safari gold

$60K? That’s a new C8.

datsun safari gold

I bought this exact car in 1971. Dealers had a waiting list (deposit required). I lived in DC and bought mine in Savannah GA (my hometown) to get it sooner. Everyone came up to the car & asked you about it. It was around $3,600. Dealer installed AC using standard dash vents. Great car. I loved it and sold it when the babies came. Ed Forman

datsun safari gold

Not sure why these bring such big bucks. I had one decades ago and loved it. But would never part with this much money for one.

datsun safari gold

Bob, that is my thought as well.

They were decent cars, but they didn’t drive all that well to pull this kind of money.

This car is supposed to be so great, why did they throw four of the cheapest Chinese tires you can find on it? Another 40 or 50 bucks and they could have been mounting Toyos, Simitomos, Yokos or Goodyears. But noooo, they bought literally THE cheapest tire available in this size. What else was skimped on? At 60 large, anybody buying this knows enough to be immediately replacing the tires and then going over the entire car again. Don’t know about you guys, but when I buy a second hand car the first thing I look at are the tires because the tires will tell you a lot about how much the owner cared for and about the car.

datsun safari gold

Good point callsign. I often look at tires on cars an it tells me a lot. Like the other day, I was looking at a Tahoe with custom wheels and the uni-directional tires were all mounted wrong… I would, for myself, only purchase Michelin, Yokohama, and Bridgestone. Continentals if I had too. Chinese? Are you crazy???

datsun safari gold

Why not Hoosier, Falken, Cooper, BFG, Toyo, Pirelli, Goodyear, Mickey Thompson, Coker, and many others. I select my tires based on the application. For example BFG, Cooper, and Mickey Thompson has the best all terrain tires available. Once at Mid Ohio we ran three brands of tires back to back while testing for a 24 hour enduro. The Goodyear tires turned the fastest lap times, the BFG were second but were much easier to control, and the Firestones came in third, and did still delaminated. However, I do agree that I would rather see how the old tires wore when buying a used vehicle. Furthermore I want to pick my next set of tires, not have someone pick them for me.

datsun safari gold

I’m with the majority on this!! 60K is an outrageous price for this car!!

datsun safari gold

Agree with the others that $60K seems outrageous for this. But-as many of you probably already know-a green near mint unrestored 1971 model sold for $310k on BaT earlier this year.

datsun safari gold

60k and the dog legs have bondo. Not a good investment in any way. I wonder what else was lurking underneath that paint.

datsun safari gold

Safari Gold is Paint Code 920.

thats lovely Mike.

Lovely Mike. I've had a standard UK 240 and you certainly feel like you are in a classic car when you drive them. Mine was 5 speed with rear arb. I think there is a place for these type of cars, would suit me now in my 70s. Can you fit it in your case? In a strange way I had a factory wsm and liked the fact that it covered my car. My other 3 cars were modified and most components changed. A well modified car is a completley different car to a standard one. There is a place for both.

I'd find it interesting to know what this car sells for. As has been mentioned on here recently I think the market may be shrinking - I'm probably typical of the buyer. The younger guys like the more sexy modified cars. I like both. The S30 is quite rare in that it can be both, unlike EType, TR6 etc.

The colour of this car is lovely. It would be a great buy for someone - whether here or on BaT. I love the steel wheels and hubcaps. I’ve been through all the modified lark on cars and feel as if I’ve come full circle now - much more interested in the originality aspects of these cars (and others) nowadays … !

My wallet is twitching. But I'm not sure I have the funds or the garage space.

Rob Gaskin said: Exactly what I like about it. A driving car for classic enjoyment and occassional meets. Some might want to take it to the next level (enginebay) but not me. Each to their own. My Honda CB750K is like that, smart and usable and I've got it running beautifully (like I did with my 240Z trackday car). Click to expand...

Sold today on BAT. Was happy with the price I got and the buyer got a great car. Funny thing is, the winning bidder and new owner has lived in Los Angelas for 5 years but is originally from the UK!!!!!......I asked him if he had been on this forum at all and he said that he would check it out soon. i told him I am a regular on here. Anyways, thought you all would get a kick out of that. Cheers. Link to BAT auction. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-datsun-240z-274/

£24,117 - yeh a fair deal for both.

I didn't know what it was Mike. Had to Google 4runner, so it's a Toyota. Did we ever get these?

Randy’s 1970 Datsun 240Z Safari Tribute

Z Car Garage has built several cars with our client  Randy Jaffe including the Rocketbunny Series1 240Z  and  #46 BRE Datsun 240Z driven by John Morton. In 2020 he acquired this cool 240Z East-African Safari Rally tribute and we helped him take it to the next level.

History and Acquisition

Randy’s Safari Z is a tribute to the original #11 car piloted to victory by Edgar Herrmann and Hans Schuller in the 1971 East African Safari Rally . Nissan campaigned three of these S30s in the rally, finishing 1, 2 and 7th place while handily beating Porsche’s and other marques along the way. It was a grueling race spanning over 3,800 miles and quite an achievement for the drivers and Nissan. #11 is currently displayed at the Zama Museum in Japan, still wearing its battle scars (more period photos in the gallery below):

Randy has always admired the Safari Z, keeping a 1/18th scale model on his desk for decades:

“I always loved the 1971 story where the Datsun Rally Z cars finished on the podium and just kicked ass over 3,852 grueling miles of torture!! A friend of mine built this car from an oddly enough a Safari Gold series 1 240Z – VIN 03227 with a 4/70 production date, Jim Faria – I almost bought the car from him in 2014 at San Diego ZCON but he decided he and daughter who do a few rally’s together which they did.”

Credit goes to Jim Faria for adding livery replicating the Herrmann/Schuller car with period front and rear spotlights, Nissan mud guards, rear grab handles, hood-mounted light pods and replica East African Safari plates:

The interior also features period touches like navigator’s equipment including 70’s route map, microphone headsets and rally timers:

Randy finally acquired the Z in 2020:

“Fast forward 6 years later at the 2020 Z Car Convention in Nashville.  Jim placed the Safari Tribute for auction on Bring a Trailer . I was like ‘Jim you are selling my car!’ Eventually I won the auction and the Z was immediately shipped to Z Car Garage and featured in a Nissan commercial – from there on together with Rob we took this tribute to the next level.”

Z Car Garage Preparation

Randy shipped the Z from Georgia to our shop in San Jose, CA and we were first tasked with preparing it for a Nissan TV commercial. The Safari Z tribute would be in the “60 Years in 30 Seconds” commercial as part of “The New Nissan” ad campaign starring actress Brie Larson. Here are a few shots from the filming location:

With a little green screen action and some actual dirt driving (somewhere in SoCal) Randy’s Z looks like it is actually ripping through the desert plains of Africa, watch the actual TV commercial below:

Photos from the off-road adventure were used in subsequent social media posts by Nissan…this montage shows video clips from an Instagram post with the Safari Tribute getting loose in the dirt:

After performing its duty filming with Nissan, the Z returned to ZCG so we could add the remaining touches that Randy wanted. Here it is at the shop, still wearing its dirt after a quick rinse. Let’s take a look at the details we added.

Randy wanted to proudly display this historic tribute in his collection, but more importantly (also why we love him), he wanted to drive it so people can see and hear the Safari Z in action. The stock L24 with SUs wasn’t going to cut it, this Z was getting the Jaffe-treatment with an engine to give it some go. A new 3.0 Rebello street race motor using a 10.5:1 head for pump gas was installed with a new 1982 280ZX 5 speed transmission and OS Giken 4.11 LSD.

We provided him with triple-Mikuni ph44 induction (as the original #11 Safari Z ran) complete with Harada intake, velocity stacks, linkages and Z Car Garage Heat Shield covering the Fujitsubo exhaust header:

Rob dyno tuned the 3L, producing 254hp/228tq at the wheels:

Enjoy this video of the Safari Tribute 240Z in action!

Small details can make a big difference, like functional Works-style side jacking points, rear bumper steps and twin-exit exhaust system. We worked with Randy to knock-out his list of items:

“Rob and Gary found a source for the rear mudflaps that are a dead copy of the originals along with their brackets and the vinyl mat that sat in the rear hatch area with the 2 spare tires on top! So many custom pieces to get it right and Z Car Garage made it all happen. We installed new race type seats from Jay at JDM parts along with his version of the original Seiko wheels which the car really needed! I found some 175 x 14 tires made for Postal Jeeps that look very much like the Dunlops originally spec’d. Of course the original car is right hand drive but I’m good with what I have done to the car – maybe find the set of Heuer Monte Carlo stop watches that ran on the dash and that will be it!”

Those rear bumper steps were fabricated to be just like the original pieces. Original car on the left with Randy’s tribute on the right:

At ZCON in 2020 Pete Brock demonstrated how these were used (with grab-handles) by the Safari drivers to literally “rock” the Z out of sticky situations:

Randy enlisted help from industry veteran Dan Passe (Director, Nissan Corporate Communications) who had a Zama Museum contact measure the O.D. of the twin-exit exhaust tail-pipes so we could replicate them:

Mudflaps wearing the “Datsun” (as the original Safari Z) logo were sourced to replace the existing “Nissan” units and also proper steel hangers were installed:

The original East-African Safari Rally cars wore Kobe Seiko Competition Works Rally-Magnesium wheels. These are difficult to source but reproductions are available. Randy is running a set from Jay Ataka of JDM Car Parts . Tires are hand-cut from a Postal service Jeep by Bryson from Classic Livery (of Leh Keen Safari 911 fame). Original on the left:

Inside, the original style REPA race belts were replicated as close as possible. The original Safari car ran Z432 seats, as seen on the Salt Flats 240Z we helped revive. These are also difficult to source so we used race-style seats from JDM Car Parts to replace to stock units:

Here is the Z at home in Georgia with Randy now featuring all of the parts/details:

Enjoying The Ride

Before heading back to Atlanta, Randy enjoyed driving the Safari Tribute during Car Week at Monterey. What a car to cruise in, and he even visited the paddock at Laguna Seca. Here are a few more shots from Randy of the Z in Georgia. We love his new “ZAFARI” (previously “SAFARIZ”) license plate:

We have many photos in the gallery below and don’t forget to see the Safari Z featured on Hoonigan Autofocus (now Larry Chen’s own channel) also looking at Randy’s epic Datsun collection.

Thank you Randy for your passion and continued support. We loved working with you to re-create fun details for the Safari Tribute. Long Live The Z!

The story of the Moscow gold: How the Spanish war was lost

Francisco Olaya 'El Oro de Negrin'

(Ediciones Madre Tierra, Mostoles 1990)

This book is the product of almost thirty years investigation, involving examination of thousands of books and pamphlets, around a million documents, and the combing of 32 archives in Spain and beyond. Olaya's work is an attempt to come up with a satisfactory explanation of the denouement of the Spanish civil war. He is highly critical of the leadership of the PSOE (Socialist Workers Party of Spain, now in power) during the civil war.

In great and documented detail Olaya examines the whole topic of what has hitherto been known as the 'Moscow gold' and which he re-christens 'Negrin's gold', gold to the tune of 5,500 million pesetas (1937). About half of this sum wound up in the Soviet Union. A small portion went to France. The remainder passed to the republican government's purchasing commissions, set up by Indalecio Prieto of the PSOE to obtain war material.

In 1954 Jose Peirats was commissioned by the CNT -in-exile to write his monumental five volume 'La CNT en la revolucion espanola'. In the course of his researches he was accorded access to documentation belonging to the CNT and in London in the keeping of Polgare. When Polgare died in 1957, access to the documents was offered to Olaya by CNT colleagues aware of his researches. Among the documents, he discovered copies of 52 letters written to Negrin by his special agent, identified only as 'C'.

One of the reports from 'C' is an account of an exchange between Salvador do Madariaga (the philosopher and original wartime Ambassador to Britain) and the British Foreign Minister, in which British preoccupation with helping the Francoist side was evident. Olaya, using textual clues, attempted to Identify 'C'.

At first Olaya suspected one Calvino, who had figured in all the Purchasing Commissions ('C' had complained of corruptions by these commissions). Calvino however denied this and further investigations led Olaya to conclude 'C' had been PSOE luminary Celestino Alvarez. This was confirmed to him by two agents who had been operating on behalf of the CNT - FAI in Paris at the time. Further inquiries led Olaya to records from Turkish customs and cargo checks (by a French secret agent) of shipping that passed through the Dardanelles en route to Spain with foodstuffs and war materials. Olaya lists this information in an appendix to his book.

A record of the accidental discovery (at the bottom of a crate of goods being returned to the USSR as defective or unusable) of gold led Olaya to query the conventional account of the shipment of Spain's gold reserves to the USSR 'for safe keeping'. Other seemingly unrelated evidence led to the conclusion that, aside from the usual shipments, gold was removed from Spain via the diplomatic pouch to Prague and, also, unrecorded, aboard other vessels.

Olaya holds that the war was lost by the republic due to corruption in the Purchasing Commissions plus the failure of Negrin and Prieto (when so informed by 'C') to take remedial action.

Olaya argues that half of the gold reserves were was sent to the USSR and half to France, partly for their use of the Purchasing Commissions and partly to open accounts in the name of specific individuals… an account in Negrin's name held 390 million francs, one in the name of Julio Lopez Masegase held 198 millions. Olaya's book details all these. He says that so far no account has been taken of the assets seized from Franco's supporters, reckoned at almost three times the value of the gold held in Spain's treasury.

Franco was later able to recover a part of what had been described as Negrin's personal treasure. Negrin's ability to realise the value of his gold in France makes nonsense of the claim that gold had to be removed to the USSR for safekeeping. Olaya states: 'I wanted to check out everything sold by C who was Negrin's informant on activities taking place abroad but I wanted confirmation from other sources. To my surprise, I was to amass a wealth of documents that confirmed and expanded upon the whole business'.

In 1988 Olaya's book in manuscript was a finalist for the 'Espejo de Espana' prize awarded by Planeta publishers. However, Planeta refused to publish it, as did all of the other major publishers in Spain. As a result, the book has been issued by Ediciones Madre Tierra (Mother Earth) of Mostoles. Its author claims: 'The book is based on documents and we are not championing any interests or making partisan propaganda, merely telling the whole truth'.

The book's appearance has coincided with a PSOE desire to sell itself to the electorate under the slogan of '100 years of Integrity with the Socialist Party'. Olaya himself has explained 'it may appear that the book has emerged at an opportune time, but no, that is mere coincidence'. ~ Paul S.
