These kid-friendly destinations are recommended based on personal experience by families that have actually visited with their own toddlers.  They all have in-depth travel guides and reviews on their own blogs.  So don’t forget to check out some of the links for each location.

day trip with toddler

Valais region, Switzerland

The first recommendation for a toddler-friendly destination is from Corina, founder, and writer at  Packed Again . She wrote “Having twin toddlers, I feel it is a must to choose your destination where the kids can be outside in nature, and there’s no better place than Switzerland to find this.

The  Valais region is in the heart of the Swiss Alps  and there is no shortage of picnic places near a stream, playgrounds or even a great lake. Just perfect for our toddlers to get dirty, throw as many stones in the water as they can and build bridges with branches. On top of all, we might be able to spot one or two mountain animals in a magnificent and safe surrounding. For me, it is the perfect toddler destination.”

Etosha National Park, Namibia

Jenny from  Travelynn Family  has experience traveling in Africa with kids.  She tells us “Yes, you can take toddlers on safari!”

Earlier this year we traversed Africa in a Land Rover with our boys (our youngest was 2) for almost 4 months. We took them on a lot of safaris, but Etosha National Park, Namibia, was definitely the best one for his age group. Firstly it’s very affordable (kids are free!), and wildlife spotting is easy due to the vast open plains, lack of vegetation, and an abundance of wildlife. In fact, the entire country is a fantastic family destination and you may like to read our  10 reasons to visit Namibia with kids .”

Colorado USA

We couldn’t help but include our beloved state of Colorado.  Although the entire state is beautiful, we suggest Glenwood Springs for Toddlers.  Situated just 3 hours from Denver, this little town at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River is a perfect place for families.

Hot Springs, waterfall hikes, roller coasters, and skiing all in one area.  You can combine this with a trip to Aspen or Vail.  The best way to experience the town is to stay at the historic Hotel Colorado or in an RV.   You can even rent easily nearby at Outdoorsy with this  $50 off coupon .

Nice, France

Shanna from  There and Back Again Family Travel Blog  suggests families with toddlers should visit Nice, France.

“Nice is a cute as a button town in the south of France on the Mediterranean Sea.  It is a perfect escape for a family with toddlers because of its manageable size, easy public transport options and abundance of easy, kid-friendly day trips.

We loved shopping at the Cours Saleya market in Nice for goodies, having picnics and playing at the Promenade du Paillon (a huge park, playground and green space at the heart of the city) and exploring Nice’s narrow, cobbled streets and alleyways.”

Barcelona, Spain

Traveling with a baby and toddler,   Diana from The Elusive Family , was able to recommend Barcelona, Spain based on personal experience.

“Sitting on the coast of the Mediterranean, Barcelona offers toddlers the opportunity to run amuck on La Rambla or explore the majestic L’Aquarium Barcelona, our top pick for toddlers. Boasting the largest sea tunnel in Europe, L’Aquarium is a perfect place to spend the afternoon watching sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of species swim in a vast Oceanarium.”

Keri Hedrick from  Family Travel in the Middle East   responded: “Dubai is a city crying out to be explored by families. Toddlers will love the huge variety of waterparks and splash parks available across the city from Duplo Splash Safari at Legoland Waterpark to the Splashers area of Atlantis, designed specifically for smaller kids.

The beach and resort weather is great almost year around, however, in the absolute hottest summer months there are still plenty of indoor activities too.  The huge Kidzania and Dubai Aquarium at Dubai Mall are always a hit, as is Mattel Playtown at City Walk ideal for youngsters.

Don’t forget to check out a desert safari during your stay which will include an opportunity to ride a camel – and top your visit off with the spectacular light and sound fountain show outside Burj Khalifa every night.”

Chicago, Illinois

Catherine from  Traveling with the Littles  suggests that  “If the weather is agreeable the best places to take toddlers are Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park.

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, both places are great for small children to stretch their legs!  Millennium Park boasts the ‘Bean’ which is an enormous reflective metal ‘bean’ in which toddlers can admire their reflections and scamper about. Also found in Millennium Park is Crown Fountain, an interactive five-story fountain that periodically shoots water out onto waiting children.  Maggie Daley Park’s Play Garden is replete with a colossal playground, a ‘Watering Hole,’ a boardwalk, and an ‘Enchanted Forest.”

Sanur, Bali, Indonesia

Kate Comer from  Rolling Along With Kids  explains that “Exploring South East Asia with toddlers can be tricky.

Sanur, located on the island of Bali in Indonesia , is easy to navigate with toddlers and you can also enjoy the beautiful culture that Bali has to offer. The flat, paved beach path is easy to walk along with young kids. Our favorite way to spend time in Sanur is to visit one of the many beach clubs with pools and playgrounds located along the beach path.”

Seattle, Washington, USA

I have to agree with Astrid from  The Wandering Daughter  when she recommends  Seattle, Washington for toddlers .  She wrote a guide on her blog and summarized the city for us.

“The city of Seattle, WA offers families with toddlers plenty of options to explore and play. With over 400 outdoor parks and play areas, as well as family-friendly museums, there is no shortage of things to do for families in Seattle.

By far the best spot for families to visit in the city is the Seattle Center, with its giant fountain for water play, art and music inspired playground, and the iconic Space Needle offering panoramic views of the city. Also not to be missed is the Children’s Museum, where toddlers can engage with hands-on educational exhibits.”

Note from Family Travel Fever:  We love Seattle and have spent time visiting the city and surrounding area.  We have even taken our RV on the Ferry across the water.  If you are looking for places to stay in Seattle you will find great deals and reviews on our  Booking link here.

La Paz, Bolivia

After 4 months of traveling around South America,  Amanda at  Great Big Family Adventure  recommends La Paz, Bolivia as a perfect destination in South America for toddlers.

“For a 1 to 3-year-old,  La Paz, Bolivia  would be cool. It is a large city but connected by cable cars which are fun and cheap. There is a large Central Park with amusement rides and a large boardwalk over the city to Pipiripi, the local Children’s museum with lots of exciting hands-on activities for children of all ages and parents too!”

Note from Family Travel Fever:  Bolivia has so many exciting places to stay.  You can try a hotel, a B&B or private rental for your family. Get the best deals and reviews for  La Paz at our booking link here.

Reykjavik, Iceland

With a roundup of their own, the  Wandermust Family  wrote that  “Iceland is a really hot (well not literally) family travel destination right now!  I was worried when we went that it wouldn’t live up to the hype but I can happily report that it did not disappoint!

Whether you are traveling in Winter or summer, staying in Reykjavik or going beyond the Golden Circle there is just so much to do with kids!  Our favorite thing was exploring all of the outdoor activities like chasing waterfalls, discovering black sand beaches and meeting Icelandic horses!  It is a great outdoor adventure holiday for all the family”

Tokyo, Japan

When asked for a recommendation for destinations in Asia,  Wisterian Watertree   wrote “The biggest city in the world is also one of the toddler-friendliest. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of sights accessible with a stroller.

Everything from thousand-year-old temples to high-tech marvels like the tallest TV tower in the world all sits along trains and subway lines, which makes getting around an easy project, even on rainy days. And there are public parks and playgrounds dotting the cityscape everywhere. On top of that, this is the city in the world which has the most Michelin stars – but any everyday meal will be as tasty as a feast in a far more expensive Japanese restaurant in your home country.

One of our favorite things is going to see the different shrines of Tokyo, especially during a festival. Your kids can participate and there are typically lots of interesting foods and activities to try – from shooting ranges with actual cork guns to enormous griddles full of okonomiyaki in the making.”

New York, New York USA

Based on their own time in the big city, Cath at  Passports and Adventures  recommends  New York City.

“New York is a great city to visit with toddlers. We visited with our two-year-old son and found plenty of toddler-friendly activities to do. Such as a water ferry ride around the tip of Manhattan, a trip to the 86 th  floor of the Empire State Building and even a trip around Central Park.

The bright lights of Times Square will fascinate them, just be aware of the noise level for them. With museums, plenty of hotels, and restaurants and diners galore, New York is definitely a city that can be visited with toddlers.”

Note from Family Travel Fever:  The Bronx  Zoo is on our bucket list to take the kids. But finding a place to stay in New York City could be tricky.  If you are planning a trip you can find the locations of places to stay, the best deals and tons of reviews on our  booking link here.

Tuscany, Italy

When asked, Marta from  Learning Escapes , replied you should pick Tuscany for a family vacation!

“A destination I loved when our kids were toddlers and that I recommend to all young families is the gorgeous   Italian region of Tuscany .  International visitors tend to know Tuscany for its cultural attractions and wineries but it is an incredibly family-friendly location and many Italian families vacation here, giving it a wonderful local feel.

The biggest attractions for families with toddlers here is the coast: it is beautiful, safe and well served, with a vast choice of hotels, campsites and resorts to suit all budgets. In terms of entertainment, the choice is endless too: you can relax making sand castles, go visit local farms for cute animal encounters, let the kids wander in car-free hilltop villages and even go to theme parks!”

Phuket, Thailand

After spending 10 days in Phuket with toddlers,  Brandi from Toddler Abroad  has a   trustworthy resource for Thailand .  Plus, we’ve been dreaming of taking our own kids there.

“Phuket has a number of excellent beaches and other toddler-friendly things to do. It’s incredibly cheap and Thai people love children. Our toddler’s favorite thing to do was ride tuk-tuks around the island.”

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

We loved northern Costa Rica, so I just had to add it to this list.  The La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area is an exciting holiday destination with toddlers.  In we left Colorado and feet of snow behind to enjoy the beaches, hiking, and wildlife.

We hiked the Arenal Volcano and spent lunch watching the clouds and smoke dance along the top of the volcano.  In the evening we soaked in the hot springs with the locals.  The following days were spent enjoying the sloths, monkeys, toucans, iguanas, and Cayman at the Proyecto Asis animal rescue and Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve.

This 3-week multigenerational trip is how we developed our  step-by-step checklist and toolkit to planning an unforgettable family vacation.

Note: We stayed at a combination of private rentals and hotels.    If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica, we found the best deals at  Booking.com  to reserve as many places to stay as possible.  Our link will take you straight to  places to stay in La Fortuna.

Our favorite place to stay in La Fortuna and the Monte Verde area was a  Tree House.

Best holiday destination for families with toddlers - Costa Rica

Moab, Utah USA

After visiting the area ourselves with 4 kids, we agree with Kristie from  World is Wide , with her recommendation of Moab.

“Moab, Utah is a fantastic family destination for all ages. It’s our family’s favorite place on the planet, and it has been since our kids were toddlers. It’s got all the ingredients for an ideal toddler destination: two amazing national parks (Arches and Canyonlands), hiking trails galore, dinosaur tracks and remains, and lots and lots of sand. “

Note From Family Travel Fever:  Based on this amazing recommendation by World is Wide – we have taken a couple of trips to the Moab Area. We now have a whole series on Moab with kids including   18 Things to do in Moab ,  Arches National Park ,  Canyonlands National Park  and  Dead Horse Point .

Lake Bled, Slovenia

My Dad’s heritage is from Slovenia and I visited with my grandmother when I was younger, so I was excited to hear Chelsea from  Pack More Into Life  choose the beautiful Lake Bled.

“If you are looking for a great vacation spot to bring your toddler.  Look no further than Lake Bled, Slovenia. With its beautiful lake, castle crested cliff, cute playgrounds, and easy sidewalks to make pushing a stroller a breeze, it’s certainly got something for everyone!

Gold Coast, Australia

Holly from  Four Around the World  responded that  “The Gold Coast, Australia is a perfect family-friendly destination to visit with toddlers!

They have some of the most beautiful beaches for a family day out, as well as being the home to all of Australia’s  best theme parks ,  all of which have areas dedicated to younger children. There are also some fantastic playgrounds and parklands, and several places to visit for native animal encounters, such as Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or Fleay’s Fauna Park.”

London, England

Cath of  Passports and Adventures  has written specifically on their blog about  things to do in London with a toddler .

“London might not seem like the sort of place to vacation with a toddler, but it has so much to offer. From visiting SeaLife and taking a ride on the London Eye, to exploring the Tower of London and more, it is a city that has it all for toddlers. Getting around London is easy with the Tube your best option, there are lots of family-friendly places to stay and the choice of cafes and restaurants on offer will please even the fussiest of eaters.”

Tel Aviv, Israel

The last and another unique pick comes from Melissa at  The   Family Voyage .  “We’ve taken toddlers to Tel Aviv twice and it’s become a family favorite!

There’s never a shortage of activities, whether you like relaxing at the beach, sampling food at the open-air markets, strolling along the boardwalk and the leafy boulevards or even visiting the weekly craft fair in the middle of the city.

Kids are welcome  everywhere  and it’s easy to find common Western ‘kids menu’ food at restaurants. There are playgrounds throughout the city and even on many beaches, so fun is always just around the corner! Get the inside scoop on visiting Tel Aviv with kids  right here . “

Tel Aviv is an choice you might not think of for family travel. The Family Voyage has been there with loves to travel to this International destination with toddlers.

Great idea for a post! Although I do not have a toddler, I do have a teenager with needs and we are going to Italy this spring. I will be sure to look into Tuscany!

Thank you! Tuscany for kids had not occurred to me! I had so much fun working with these wonderful travel experts and I loved watching the responses roll in. I was surprised by the locations they chose.

Thank you for sharing such wonderful destinations to travel with toddlers. But sadly, I have just visited Dubai with my toddlers and loved it very much. There are so many things for kids to learn and entertain. Two of the destinations that I added to my bucket list are Nice, France and La Paz, Bolivia. I will seek for travel guides from those travel bloggers who have actually visited these places with their toddlers.

You’re welcome. I found ideas to add to my family bucket list, also

I had heard Ireland before – so it’s on our list. Any chance you’ve visited?

Actually, we have and it was wonderful. We traveled with 3 kids, the youngest a toddler and grandma. We have wonderful family memories. We moved a little too much though. We moved almost every day but it wasn’t necessary. I think we should have picked one or two central places to stay and done day trips. The highlights for us were waterfall hikes, the castles and a hawk walk by a local bird rescue.

I love continuing to add to my growing list of places to visit with my kids. I have yet to make it to the United Arab Emirates and think this would be a really interesting place to explore a different culture and environment to the places we normally travel. Thanks.

Thanks!UAE sounds wonderful.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

When selecting the best vacation destinations for toddlers, there are many factors you need to think of.

You should keep in mind the security that each place provides.

Also, compare each destination’s rates, services, and drawbacks.

The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront offers breathtaking views of the beach and the city skyline.

Its serene and peaceful ambiance ensures you can relax and unwind during your stay.

But the hotel has limited dining options, which might require guests to explore nearby restaurants for more variety.

The Park Hyatt Vienna in Austria is a luxurious hotel that conveniently places guests near popular attractions.

The hotel also maintains high safety standards, especially for families with children.

However, the hotel tends to be crowded during peak travel seasons.

Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages is a charming destination with direct beach access and a plethora of water activities.

However, the availability of cottages may be limited during busy periods, so planning and securing reservations in advance is necessary.

If you’re searching for an alternative to Park Hyatt Vienna with more kid-friendly amenities, consider Four Seasons Chicago.

Its only drawback is that it can get pretty noisy during busy periods.

How I Picked The Destinations

As a travel enthusiast, I always make time to travel with my family.

When going on trips, we select the best destinations that are kid-friendly.

We stayed at hotels and resorts that are suitable for toddlers, and I did some research about each place.

I also conversed with other families and guests to make sure that my reviews would have additional reliable information.

Our Rating Method

I rate these vacations based on the following criteria:

  • Safety: I use this criterion to evaluate the overall safety of every vacation destination. Does it have a strong safety record? Does it provide child-friendly safety measures? These are the questions I ask myself when evaluating safety.
  • Kid-Friendly Activities: I use this criterion to evaluate the availability and quality of kid-friendly activities. Does the destination offer a variety of engaging activities? Is it near theme parks, zoos, museums, nature parks, and beaches? Is it both educational and fun? I consider these factors when rating this criterion.
  • Affordability: This assesses the affordability of the family vacation. Is it expensive? Are the accommodations, activities, meals, and transportation affordable? Are there family-friendly discounts? These are the questions I take into account to rate affordability.
  • Ease of Travel: I use this to rate the accessibility and ease of getting around the area. Is it easy to navigate? Does it offer family-friendly transportation options? Do we need to fly to get to the destination? I ask myself these questions in order to evaluate ease of travel.
  • Accommodation Options: This assesses the availability and quality of accommodations. Does it provide spaces that separate adult and child sleeping areas? Are there amenities like a kitchen, laundry, and swimming pool available? These are the questions I ask when evaluating accommodation options.
  • Food Diversity: This criterion evaluates the availability of kid-friendly food options. Does it cater to different dietary preferences? Are there child-friendly menus? I consider these factors when rating food diversity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do toddlers like to do on vacation.

Toddlers often appreciate visiting playgrounds, exploring child-friendly attractions such as zoos or aquariums, and spending time outdoors in parks or at the beach.

Are There Any Beach Destinations That Are Particularly Toddler-friendly And Offer Calm Waters And Shallow Areas?

Yes. These include South Seas Island Resort, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, and Ocean Edge Resort and Spa.

Conclusion

day trip with toddler

Based on the ratings and experience, these places are the best vacations for toddlers.

The Park Hyatt Vienna made us feel like royalty with its elegant setting and excellent services.

We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel staff who gifted my toddlers coloring books upon check-in to keep them busy.

Honestly, that was genuinely thoughtful of them.

We also loved the beach access of Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages.

The kids were happy building sandcastles, and we enjoyed the provided board games in our cozy cottage.

We were also impressed with the luxury and sophistication of Four Seasons Chicago.

But the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront was the best destination we’ve been to.

We were captivated by the breathtaking views of Portland’s skyline.

And my little ones were enamored with the beach view, which is a perfect distraction during meals.

The peaceful ambiance of the hotel also allowed us to unwind and relax after a long day of exploring the city.

Tips for Your Washington DC Family Vacation

A family trip to Washington DC is a US bucket list destination for many American families.

If you’re thinking of visiting, it’s important to understand the general layout and to know what there is to do there before your arrival.

Though the capital of the USA is a popular tourist destination, knowing what to expect will make your family trip less stressful as well as ensure that you see and do all that is of interest to you.

Though this guide features photos from when we visited Washington DC in summer, we also have a list of the best things to do in Washington DC in winter .

Here are a few travel tips for your Washington DC family vacation that’ll help you prepare before you go.

1. Understand the area and have a plan for each day.

The District of Columbia (in between the U.S. states of Maryland and Virginia) was set aside as the nation’s capital so that the federal government would not be located in any single state.

National symbols such as the U.S. Capitol Building and the White House are accessible to visitors, along with dozens of other tourist attractions, which include world-class museums and important monuments – study ahead of time which places require reservations to attend.

When planning your Washington DC family vacation, refer to a tourist map of Washington DC in order to understand the layout of the main tourist area.

Keep in mind that even the most seasoned travelers will be not able to see and do everything on their Washington DC family vacation.

Between the city’s enormous size, the time it takes to explore the many, huge museums, and the multitude of things to do both day and night, it’s hard to do it all in one trip.

Our advice is to build a Washington DC itinerary that includes 3-5 activities each day – as you’ll find in our detailed itinerary shared below.

Group activities together based on their proximity to one another so that you do not waste time and energy zig-zagging back and forth.

In addition, be sure to be flexible in allowing time for rest breaks, meals, and snacks.

2. Prepare for a lot of walking.

When planning your Washington DC family vacation, know ahead of time that you will be walking a lot.

Like seriously, a lot.

The most popular area for tourists to visit in Washington DC is the National Mall, an outdoor landscaped park that encompasses all of the memorials, monuments, and museums.

It is centrally located in Washington DC and stretches over 2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial on the west end to the U.S. Capitol on the east end.

In other words, it is a  large  area to cover for both kids and grownups alike.

Make sure that everyone has comfortable walking shoes, such as tennis shoes or sandals with adequate support.

And if you are debating about bringing a stroller, do it!

Both the mall area and all of the museums are stroller friendly.

Additional planning tip: Though strollers are permitted in all of the museums, no strollers are permitted in  Ginny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination .

Be sure to see the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial during your family trip to Washington DC.

3. Visit on weekdays and in the early morning or evening.

The National Mall receives over 24 million visitors each year.

It is the most crowded on the 4th of July, Memorial Day weekend, during the National Cherry Blossom Festival, and for major political rallies and special events.

In addition, there are always more visitors on weekends and during school and public holidays.

The best way to avoid crowds on the National Mall is to visit on weekdays, early in the day, or in the evening.

I personally prefer to visit the monuments, in particular, in the evening as they are even more special when lit up at night.

Finally, early morning and evening temperatures are much more appealing when visiting Washington DC with kids, as daytime heat and humidity can be unbearable during the summer months.

Visit the free Smithsonian museums as part of your Washington DC itinerary with kids.

4. Seek out designated kids’ areas.

Depending on the ages of your kids, you will definitely need to seek out age-appropriate activities to keep everyone in the family entertained.

Toddlers will love the designated kids’ area called Wegman’s Wonderplace found at The National Museum of American History and the imagiNATIONS Activity Center at the National Museum of the American Indian.

Another great place for toddlers and small children is the immersive, hands-on  Play, Work, Build installation  at the National Building Museum.

Along with the monuments and museums, teens and school-age kids will especially enjoy a U.S. Capitol Building tour, the Library of Congress, Ford’s Theatre, Mount Vernon, The White House, and Arlington National Cemetery.

Children young and old will love the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the National Children’s Museum, the National Zoo, and the huge wading pool and water features at The Yards Park .

Here’s a list of our must-see museum artifacts when visiting Washington DC with kids:

  • Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights at the National Archives Museum .
  • The space shuttle Discovery at The National Air and Space Museum .
  • The Hope Diamond at the National Museum of Natural History .
  • Dorthy’s ruby-red slippers, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat, the original Kermit the Frog puppet, Old Glory American Flag, and The First Ladies exhibition at the National Museum of American History .
  • Visualizing the 3-tiered bronze-colored exterior as well as Muhammad Ali’s headgear at the National African American History Museum.

Washing DC with kids: Consider eating at food trucks.

5. There are very few food options on the National Mall.

When strolling around the National Mall you will not find many family friendly food options.

You will, however, find occasional hot dog carts, ice cream trucks, and food trucks that line 14th street (the main street between the Washington Monument and the Smithsonian museums.)

Though there are some restaurants near the National Mall , we’ve found the most convenient options when visiting Washington DC with kids are at the food courts and cafeterias inside of the Smithsonian Museums.

Simply pop into one of the museums (which are free to enter) and follow the signs to their in-house cafes or eateries.

Check out this Smithsonian dining guide for hours, availability, and options.

If you don’t want to worry about where to buy food at all, pack your own meals, snacks, and water and have a picnic in one of the many open green spaces.

Additional planning tip: Though visitors are permitted to bring food and beverages in sealed containers (inside a backpack or other bag) into the Smithsonian museums, they may not be consumed in the museum.

Places like the Capitol Building and other government buildings do not allow outside food and drink inside, so do plan accordingly.

6. Know the ‘ways to save’.

One of the best things you’ll find about your Washington DC family vacation is that most of the monuments and museums are free to visit!

There is no admission charge for the U.S. Capitol Building, Library of Congress, Smithsonian museums, or to view the monuments and memorials (which is great if you’re visiting Washington DC on a budget!) .

The International Spy Museum and George Washington’s Mount Vernon currently charge $20-50 each for an adult. Guided tours at any of the Washington DC attractions also charge a fee per person.

You can save money by purchasing tickets online in advance.

Other ways to save money on your Washington DC family vacation are to stay in hotels outside of the city limits, eat hotel room meals whenever possible, pack your own portable snacks, and walk whenever possible.

Visit the Korean War Veterans Memorial during your family vacation to Washington DC.

How to Get Around Washington DC

The easiest way to get around Washington DC is by using  Metro , DC’s public transportation Metrorail and Metrobus system.

For more information on its stations, fares, maps, and schedules visit Metro’s official website at  www.wmata.com .

Uber, Lyft, and taxis are also readily available in Washington DC, at a much steeper cost.

We do not recommend renting a car when visiting Washington DC with kids, as both driving and parking are challenging if you are not familiar with the city.

If you are staying outside of the city and have a rental car, however, drive to the nearest Metro station, park, and then ride Metrorail into the city.

Once in the area of the National Mall, The White House and U.S. Capitol Building, as well as the museums and monuments, are best seen on foot.

The exception is Arlington National Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial for which I would recommend taking an Uber or Lyft.

Best Places to Stay in Washington DC for Families

If you want to stay within the city and potentially avoid having to rent a car, I recommend staying in a hotel that is within walking distance of the National Mall.

Convenient, family-friendly hotels in Washington DC include:

  • Residence Inn by Marriott at Washington, DC National Mall – 5-minute walk to the National Mall, indoor pool, kitchens with full-sized refrigerators/freezers and microwaves, complimentary evening reception, and complimentary buffet breakfast.
  • Hampton Inn Washington DC/White House – 10-minute walk to the National Mall, complimentary breakfast and an indoor pool, and several dining options nearby.
  • Holiday Inn Washington Capitol – 5-minute walk from the National Mall, outdoor rooftop pool, and an onsite convenience store.
  • Washington Marriott at Metro Center – 10- minute walk to the National Mall, heated indoor pool, onsite restaurants, and a Starbucks.

If you’re open to staying outside of the city and taking the Metro into the heart of Washington DC, consider staying in its surrounding cities.

Hotels near Washington, DC in these areas sometimes have free parking and are usually more affordable than those downtown.

  • Hotels in Alexandria, Virginia (Home of the free King Street Trolley)
  • Hotels in Bethesda, Maryland
  • Hotels in Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia

Washington DC with kids: Visit the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Washington DC Family Vacation Itinerary

Here’s our suggested itinerary for spending up to one week in Washington DC with kids.

These day-to-day itinerary suggestions are based on our personal experiences and require a full day of touring beginning at approximately 9 AM and going strong until the evening.

No two Washington DC family vacations will be the same, however, so use these itinerary suggestions as a guide.

You’ll need to adjust your itinerary as needed to account for the weather, where you stay, how much time you spend at each attraction, and the varying interests of your family members.

How many days do you need in Washington DC?

Ideally, I recommend spending 5 days in Washington DC, and 2 days exploring the surrounding area such as Gettysburg and Charlottesville, VA ( home of Thomas Jefferson’s plantation, Monticello ).

At a minimum, I suggest that you need at least 3 days to see the best of Washington DC, especially if you’re traveling from a distance and want to make the most of your trip.

What’s the best time to visit Washington DC?

The best times to visit Washington, D.C., are during the months of September to November and from March to May.

Visiting during the spring or fall will allow you to avoid the sweltering summer heat and humidity, as well as avoid the high tourist seasons.

If you’re able to sneak in a visit during late March to early April, you’ll be able to enjoy the National Cherry Blossom Festival .

This is a gorgeous event and celebrates the blossoms opening up on the Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.

Finally, the best day to visit Washington DC to avoid crowds tends to be Wednesdays.

See the U.S. Capitol Building during your Washington DC itinerary.

Washington DC Itinerary 7 Days

Here’s how to spend up to 7 days in Washington DC with kids.

The physical locations of the Washington DC attractions that are listed fit into the flow of this itinerary. If you choose to substitute a different attraction, be sure to adjust the timing of your itinerary accordingly.

Stick around to the end of this post where you’ll find our  free printable Travel With A Plan itinerary planner to take notes on while planning your trip!

Day 1 – U.S. Capitol Building & Smithsonian Museums

The National Mall is the best place to start your Washington DC family vacation.

It’s a large public park with the US Capitol Building on one end and the Lincoln Memorial at the other, with several monuments and museums in between.

Make advanced reservations to start the morning off with a tour of the U.S. Capitol Building (open Monday-Friday only).

Next, take the walking tunnel from the Capitol Building to visit the Library of Congress, the children’s library in the basement, and its gift shop.

Spend the afternoon visiting as many of the free Smithsonian Museums that you have the time and patience for.

Fun ideas for kids include the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, and the National Museum of Natural History.

Spot out the artifacts listed above in Tip #4.

The White House

Day 2 – The White House, Monuments, & Memorials

Start the morning off with a private tour of The White House (this must be pre-arranged through a Member of Congress).

Afterward, make your way to the Washington Monument.

If you’re interested in going to the top, timed tickets to ride the elevator to its 500-foot observation deck may be obtained in person or online.

I definitely recommend purchasing them ahead of time online as walk-up tickets sell fast.

Spend the afternoon at the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, as well as visiting the Thomas Jefferson, FDR, Martin Luther King Jr., Korean, Vietnam, and Lincoln Memorials.

Stick around long enough to see these memorials ( especially the Lincoln Memorial! ) lit up in the dark.

Visit the FDR Memorial in Washington DC with kids.

Day 3 – Museums

Start your morning off by visiting the International Spy Museum.

This world-class museum is entertaining for both adults and kids of all ages.

Next, spend the afternoon visiting the United States Holocaust Museum (decide based on the ages of your kids – this may be too sensitive for young children) and a few more Smithsonian Museums.

Don’t forget to stop into the National Archives Museum to see the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

When you need a break from the museums, consider renting a paddle boat on the Tidal Basin to get a unique perspective of the Jefferson, Dr. King, and FDR Memorials.

The Tidal Basin paddle boats are seasonal, and reservations are recommended.

The Ultimate Washingon DC Family Vacation 7-day Itinerary from top US family travel blog, Travel With A Plan.

Day 4 – Arlington National Cemetery & A Theatre Production

Visit Arlington National Cemetery and witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.

Keep in mind that this cemetery is enormous and that its walking distances and hills require moderate physical exertion.

An alternative to walking and a great option when visiting Washington DC with kids is the  interpretive bus tour .

The tour is a live-narrated, hop-on/hop-off tour that makes four stops: President John F. Kennedy’s gravesite, John J. Pershing’s gravesite, Memorial Amphitheater (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), and Arlington House.

Tickets may be purchased inside the Welcome Center at the box office or online at  www.arlingtontours.com .

After leaving Arlington National Cemetery, stop at the Iwo Jima Marine Corps War Memorial.

Finally, go to an evening performance at Ford’s Theatre or The John F. Kennedy Center – depending on which scheduled performance you’re interested in seeing.

Visit Mount Vernon during your trip to Washington DC.

Day 5 – Mount Vernon

For your last day in Washington DC with kids, I recommend venturing out to visit Mount Vernon which is located 13 miles south of DC.

Mount Vernon is the former plantation and burial place of George Washington, the American Revolutionary War general and first President of the United States.

Now a National Historic Landmark, visitors can tour George and Martha’s mansion, its expansive gardens, Washington’s tomb, the slave memorial, and a still-working farm.

In addition, make sure you take the path down to the waterfront and go inside their 16-sided barn.

I also highly recommend visiting the Revolutionary War Theatre found at the onsite Education Center.

Here, you and your family can watch historical moments of the Revolutionary War come to life through a 4D theatre experience including animations, falling snow, theatrical lighting, fog, and live-action sequences.

Day 6 – The National Zoo & Rock Creek Park

Spend 3 hours visiting Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

Here you’ll see wallabies, Asian elephants, emus, giant pandas, and other amazing animals.

There’s also a playground, squirt zone, carousel, and several dining options.

Afterward, visit the nearby Washington National Cathedral and then wind down at Rock Creek Park.

Rock Creek Park, known as “The Oasis in the City” is a stunning National Park that allows you to escape the bustle of the city.

Here, you’ll find old Civil War forts, colonial houses, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, golfing, and gorgeous scenery including rugged forests, a creek, and Boulder Bridge.

Day 7 – Explore the Surrounding Area

I can’t call it “The Ultimate Washington DC Family Vacation” without mentioning a few important attractions in the surrounding area.

If you have more time, or are perhaps heading into Washington DC and passing through these areas, here are my additional recommendations.

We loved exploring Monticello, the mountaintop home of Thomas Jefferson, visiting the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, and finally, spending a night in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Touring the 6,000-acre Gettysburg Battlefield National Military Park, going to the Gettysburg Visitors’ Center & Cyclorama, as well as doing a walking tour of the National Cemetery (site of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address) were all unforgettable, and highly impactful experiences.

Any or all of these historic sites will make an excellent addition to your family trip to Washington DC.

Visit the Marine Corps War Memorial during your Washington DC itinerary.

Washington DC Itinerary 5 Days

If you have 5 days in Washington DC, I recommend enjoying days 1 – 5 as listed in the above 7-day Washington DC itinerary.

Washington DC 3-Day Itinerary

If you only have 3 days in Washington DC with kids, I recommend enjoying the activities listed in days 1, 2, and 4 of the above 7-day Washington DC itinerary.

Washington DC 1-Day Itinerary

If you only have one day in Washington DC with kids, I recommend starting your day off with a U.S. Capitol Building tour and then briefly visiting the National Museum of American History, the National Archives, and the National Air and Space Museum.

Finish off your one day in Washington DC with a stroll around the National Mall and by viewing all of the monuments and memorials (open 24 hrs/day and frequented by visitors up until 11 PM).

Best activities for families in Washington DC: the monuments and memorials.

What is your suggestion for getting to Monticello or Mount Vernon? We will fly in and have no car. 3 teens and two parents. The tours I’ve come across seem to be $100 a person. Traveling with toddlers: 6 best places to go (and how to survive).

Lowering your expectations is key when traveling with toddlers.

Traveling With Toddlers

A toddler looks out the window of a plane.

Getty Images

Traveling with a toddler might not always be smooth sailing, but it can be more enjoyable when utilizing these top tips.

There's no sugarcoating it: Traveling with toddlers is a challenge. But there are ways to make it easier, as well as places that cater to – or are naturally convenient for – the kiddie set and their families. Read on for destination recommendations and travel tips from U.S. News editors who frequently travel with toddlers as well as other experts.

The Best Places to Travel With Toddlers

A toddler smiles as she run down a beach.

When deciding where to go, keep it simple. "Choose relaxing destinations that don't involve a lot of moving around or heavy itineraries," says Elizabeth Von Tersch, a mom of two toddlers and a senior editor of travel at U.S. News. "If you don't have a long list of places to see or things to check off, you'll be more content with just one or two activities per day." It's also ideal to choose a destination that's reachable via a short road trip, train ride or direct flight – especially if this is your first time traveling with toddlers.

Beach destinations

Beaches with tide pools and/or shallow waters are especially fun for toddlers, plus many beach towns offer vacation rentals with fully equipped kitchens, washing machines and other comforts of home near the sand and surf. Load up the beach wagon with all of your essentials (including plenty of snacks, drinks and a picnic lunch) and spend a few hours on the beach; then head back to your rental for nap time before an evening on the boardwalk.

U.S. News editors agree Isle of Palms, South Carolina, is especially perfect for toddlers. The boardwalk is lined with shops, restaurants and ice cream shops, and it sits close enough to Charleston for easy daytrips into the city. Other editor picks and highly rated options include the Outer Banks in North Carolina with its variety of beaches, vacation rentals and overall laid-back vibe; Seaside, Florida, an idyllic, walkable community; Michigan City, Indiana, where you can stay at the family-friendly Beachwalk Resort, close to Indiana Dunes National Park; and Coronado Beach, California , with plenty of space to spread out, places to eat and nearby accommodations – including the famous Hotel del Coronado .

Lakefront locales

If you have a toddler who doesn't care for the sand, consider a lake and/or mountain destination where you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and biking (and maybe some sand-less water fun), as well as vacation rental accommodations. On Lake Champlain in Vermont, you also have the option to stay at a classic summer resort like Basin Harbor or Tyler Place (the latter of which is all-inclusive) and enjoy animal visits and tractor rides at local farms such as Shelburne Farms, a nonprofit educational organization. In Washington state, Lake Chelan offers clean, crystal-clear waters perfect for (supervised) swimming, and in Okoboji, Iowa, you'll find boat rides on Lake Okoboji and carnival-style rides at Arnolds Park Amusement Park.

Small theme parks

While theme parks like Disney World might come to mind, it's unlikely you'll get to a lot of rides with your toddler, who will probably be happier at the hotel pool. Instead, opt for smaller theme parks geared toward young kids. Megan Johnson, a mom and editor at SmarterTravel Media , says her toddlers loved Sesame Place, which has locations near Philadelphia and San Diego . "The rides are short so the lines go fast too," she points out. Another ideal theme park for toddlers is Legoland, with parks in Goshen, New York (an easy weekend getaway from New York City ); Winter Haven, Florida; and Carlsbad, California. You'll also want to consider Peppa Pig Theme Park – also located in Winter Haven – and Story Land in Glen, New Hampshire.

City vacations

City vacations offer a variety of things to do with the option to go at your own pace – and some of them are practically made for young kids. For instance, did you know Indianapolis is home to the largest children's museum in the U.S. , or that Pittsburgh is often called Kidsburgh for its wide variety of attractions for youngsters?

Of course, this is your vacation too, so think about some things you might like to do when planning your city trip. In Rochester, for example, you can combine a trip to The Strong National Museum of Play with a visit to some family-friendly Finger Lakes wineries . On a trip to Denver , you can show the children real dinosaur tracks at Dinosaur Ridge before exploring Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre or one of the Mile High City's famous (and kid-friendly) breweries.

Family visits

Visiting family in another state or country is a great opportunity to experience local attractions and restaurants with loved ones you don't see often. If your relatives are willing to babysit for a few hours, you might even be able to squeeze in a date night or an afternoon at the spa .

All-inclusive resorts

All-inclusive family resorts with pools, water parks , shows and other on-site entertainment can be a lot of fun for toddlers and their families. They also make dining easy, eliminating the stress of meal preparation on vacation, and some even offer free nightly rates for kids . Just keep in mind that toddlers may not be old enough to enjoy the kids clubs, as minimum age requirements vary at each property. You'll also need to get your child a passport (unless you opt for an all-inclusive resort in the U.S. ). Much of the same can be said for cruising with toddlers .

Survival Tips for Traveling With Toddlers

A toddler naps in a car seat of a van.

Lower your expectations.

… and then lower them a little more. Naps will be skipped, meltdowns will be had and potty-training setbacks are inevitable. Stay on schedule when you can, but don't feel guilty when you can't.

Book toddler-friendly accommodations.

If you're planning to stay at a vacation rental, Von Tersch recommends looking for one with kids amenities such as a swing set and toys, and/or one that sits near a local park. If you prefer to stay at a hotel , choose one with a pool or special treats for kids, such as in-room games. It's also a good idea to book a family suite with a separate bedroom or two; this way, you don't have to go to bed when your toddler does.

Hide new toys in your carry-on bag.

They don't have to be expensive; in fact, your local dollar or thrift store can be an invaluable resource when preparing to travel with toddlers. Stock up on cheap knick-knacks that you can easily pack and surprise your child with throughout the journey (and that you won't worry about when they inevitably disappear). You might also consider ordering a few inexpensive options on Amazon – Wikki Stix , Melissa & Doug Water Wow! activity pads, Squigz , lift-and-look board books , and packable busy boards like this one are fun, mess-free favorites among families with both toddlers and older children.

Bring the tablet.

While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting daily screen time for young children, "the rules go out the window when traveling," says Dr. Danielle Wiese (reassuringly), a pediatrician for Carmel Pediatrics in Carmel, Indiana. "Do what you need to do to get there – it will all be fine."

If you're bringing a kids tablet and/or if you'll be on a long flight with seat-back screens, be sure to pack a pair of kids headphones like CozyPhones , which are especially comfortable (and adorable) for little ears.

Pack a "snackle" box.

Most everyone – but especially toddlers – thrives on snacks when traveling. Pack a variety of options, including both nutritional and not-so-nutritional items (because sometimes, only candy will do). "It's okay to give those less healthy snacks while traveling," Wiese says, though she also recommends sneaking in some fiber so your toddler's tummy has some regulation. "Easy to-go snacks with fiber are applesauce pouches, raisins and some bar snacks (check the label)."

When packing snacks, organize them in a "snackle" box to save space and add excitement to the trip. This portable storage case with a handle from Harbor Freight works perfectly, though any small organizational box will do. You can also try a snack spinner like this one by GoBe , which only allows kiddos to access one snack at a time. Bonus: The snackle box is also useful for local outings and daytrips closer to home.

Johnson also recommends packing some larger-portion snacks or meals so you don't have to worry in the event you can only find fast-food stops and want to avoid them, or if you go to a restaurant that doesn't serve anything your toddler will eat.

Prepare for messes.

It's amazing how fast a clean car can reach tornado-level status on a family road trip, or how your toddler's bodily functions seem to synchronize with the exact time of takeoff. Ann Henson , a toddler mom and assistant managing editor of travel at U.S. News, recommends packing an extra outfit for your toddler (and maybe yourself), sanitizing wipes and/or spray, and trash bags, adding that dog waste bags work well.

Don't plan stops.

Your toddler(s) will inevitably plan them for you when they get cranky, need a diaper change or need to use the bathroom. When you stop, be sure to use the bathroom yourself, fuel up the car and do anything else you have to do so you can avoid stopping when your little one takes a snooze.

Bring the essentials, and rent or ship the rest.

Bring the gear that's most important to you, such as the travel stroller and car seat – you can check them at the gate – and be sure to store them in a travel bag when not in use. Not only will the bag protect your gear, but you might be able to store some extra items inside. "I put diapers in the stroller bag, both for extra padding and for the convenience of freeing up suitcase space," says Nicola Wood , a mom and senior editor of travel at U.S. News.

For bulky items like portable cribs , beach wagons and hiking baby carriers, consider a baby gear rental service like BabyQuip or rents4baby , or search for local vendors in your destination. In addition, you may want to consider sending smaller essentials – diapers, wipes and the like – to your destination. If you're an Amazon Prime member , your free shipping perk is especially useful here.

Consider TSA Precheck or Global Entry.

Having TSA Precheck means you'll (typically) spend less time at airport security – a godsend when traveling with toddlers. Children younger than 12 can go through the TSA Precheck lane when traveling with a guardian who has it, and are not required to have their own membership. You can apply for either TSA Precheck or Global Entry, which includes TSA Precheck benefits. However, if you're traveling internationally and looking for Global Entry benefits for the entire family, each family member (regardless of age) will need to apply for it. Compare TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry and decide which one is best for you.

Start special vacation-only traditions.

It's the little things that count – even on vacation. "As kids, my mom would buy a variety pack of miniature boxes of cereal on each vacation for quick (and cheap) breakfasts during our trip. We only ever got them on vacation, and for some reason the novelty of this made them taste way better than the cereal we had every day at home," Von Tersch says. "To this day, when I see those cute little boxes, I still associate them with good memories and carefree trips."

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Expect smiles 24/7.

Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. ( InsideJapan offers wonderful private tours led by local experts.) "Our kids loved trains, making the bullet train around Japan one of the best parts of the trip," says Spence.

Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. One of the most memorable additions to the cities, however, is a couple of days near Mount Fuji, where Hoshinoya Fuji offers spectacular views of the elusive volcano alongside exceptional local cuisine and rugged outdoorsy activities, including a food smoking workshop, canoeing, and e-biking. At the end of the day, there's no better place for a globe-trotting family to relax and share stories than around a bonfire under the stars, with live acoustic music, s'mores, and Japanese whisky.

Things to Do in Massachusetts With Kids

You can’t talk about places to visit in Massachusetts without leading off with the capital city of Boston. Boston is filled with family activities and is one of the best places to visit if you are hoping to see historical sites. You can even choose to stay in Boston and take various day trips from Boston as well as explore the city.

To get an overview of the sites of Boston, consider the popular Duck Boats (book in advance – they sell out!) as well as the trolley tours. This can be a good way to see everything quickly and get a good understanding of the history of Boston.

There are also several great museums to visit in Boston. For younger kids, the Boston Children’s Museum offers so many fabulous hands-on exhibits as well as a large climbing feature that’s perfect for burning off energy. Visit early in the day for lower crowd levels, because it definitely can get busy.

There are other fantastic museums in Boston. These include the New England Aquarium, the Boston Museum of Science , and the Boston Museum of Fine Art. All have elements that kids would enjoy.

Our favorite of these is the Museum of Science because there are so many different hands-on things for kids to do. Stay for an IMAX or planetarium show, and you’ll be there for most of the day. The museum also features traveling and interactive exhibits. It’s a great place to learn about science and have fun and there’s something for kids of all ages.

The New England Aquarium, located on the Boston Waterfront, offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits focused on marine life. It also features an IMAX theater offering nature-themed movies.

The Boston Museum of Fine Art is probably best for older kids. In addition to the art galleries, there is also a popular mummy exhibit that kids enjoy. They do have some kids’ programming throughout the year, so check their website for details.

If you are interested in history, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail. You can book a walking tour, or walk it on your own.

A walking tour is a great option for families looking to learn more about the history of the Freedom Trail. There’s also the Tea Party Museum and the USS Constitution along with other historic sites. Here’s one walking tour that can be booked in advance .

For theater and culture, you can see a show from the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall or a play/musical in the theater district. Several theaters rotate touring productions of national shows.

Local productions, including the Blue Man Group, are also available. There’s also the A.R.T. in Cambridge which offers shows (sometimes pre-Broadway) on a regular basis. There are also several live music venues.

In the summer, you’ll want to spend some time on the water. There are several different boat tours on the Boston Harbor that you can take, including whale watches and the thrilling Codzilla ride . Or take a trip to the Boston Harbor Islands , where you will get a national park experience right near the city.

Sports fans will definitely want to visit Fenway Park. If you can’t get tickets to see a game, take a tour of the park . This behind-the-scenes experience is perfect for fans of baseball.

You may also want to explore the more iconic areas of Boston, including Boston Common, the Boston Public Garden, and Faneuil Hall.

If you are planning to visit multiple attractions in Boston, it’s a great idea to purchase a Boston CityPASS. With the CityPASS, you’ll pay for one ticket and then get admission to multiple attractions. Here’s what’s included:

  • The New England Aquarium
  • The Boston Museum of Science
  • Boston Harbor Cruises
  • A choice of either the Franklin Park Zoo or the Harvard Museum of Natural History

Visit the CityPASS website to purchase .

Salem Witch Museum

Salem, which is famous for the Salem witch trials from the 1600s, is located about 40 minutes outside of Boston on the North Shore and is one of the best day trips from Boston. This city offers waterfront views, shops, restaurants, and historic buildings among the Salem Witch attractions. If you’d like to learn more about the trials, the Salem Witch Museum has staged exhibits.

You’ll also find the acclaimed Peabody Essex Museum art museum right in the center of town, the House of the Seven Gables, the Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace, and more, just a short walk from the center.

As you’d imagine, Salem comes alive during the month of October for Halloween. While it’s a busy place to visit, there’s so much activity and so many great things to do.

Halloween lovers should definitely include a trip to Salem on their bucket list. Public transportation is offered, or arrive early for the best shot at a good parking spot. It gets extremely busy during the entire month of October. Here are some tours in Salem to book .

Rockport, MA - Motif #1

I absolutely love Rockport, located on Cape Ann. Although I grew up in New England, I only started visiting Rockport a few years ago.

Since then, we’ve been a number of times, in summer and winter. It’s one of my favorite small towns. The entire Cape Ann area is a beautiful spot for a scenic drive, and it’s just a short drive from Boston.

If you visit the Rockport area, you’ll definitely want to go to Bearskin Neck. This neighborhood features shops and restaurants (lots and lots of seafood spots) in a quaint setting. You can park in one of the municipal lots or find on-street parking.

While you are there, you’ll definitely want to take a picture of Motif #1, which is rumored to be the most painted building. This iconic building is a replica of an old fishing shack.

Want to be on the water? You can rent kayaks in Rockport, or drive to neighboring Gloucester to take a whale watch or schooner tour. There are also several sandy beaches in the area worth visiting, including Wingaersheek Beach and Good Harbor Beach.

You can stay in Rockport or Gloucester, or make a day trip from another spot in Massachusetts.

See hotels in Rockport here .

Plimoth Plantation

Known as America’s Birthplace, Plymouth is a must-visit for anyone who wants to explore US colonial history. Plymouth is located about 75-90 minutes outside of Boston, towards Cape Cod. It’s a great place to stop either for a day trip as part of a road trip down to Cape Cod .

Once you are there, you’ll want to visit the Plimoth Patuxet Museum . This living history museum features several sections, including the Wampanoag Homesite and the 17th Century English village. It’s definitely worth a visit, especially with kids who are just learning about the colonization of America.

There are several different ticket options, which you can either purchase online or at Plimoth Patuxet. You can choose to visit just the plantation or add on visits to the Grist Mill and/or the waterfront exhibit. The Mayflower II was being restored in Mystic, CT, but is now back home in Plymouth.

Of course, if you are interested in history, you probably won’t want to miss Plymouth Rock. In reality, it’s a pretty small spot and isn’t very exciting. If you are already in the area, you may want to visit just to see it. But there are other better places to visit if you are short on time.

Cape Cod

I could dedicate entire articles to all of the kid-friendly things to do on Cape Cod . It’s truly a full vacation experience, especially in the summer.

Best visited in the summer (or early fall), Cape Cod is filled with quaint shops, clam shacks, and other restaurants, family activities, beaches, and great hotels. One popular attraction is the Cape Cod National Seashore , which is part of the National Park Service. The Cape Cod National Seashore includes beaches all the way to the tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown . The beaches in Cape Cod, are some of the best beaches on the East Coast.

When we visit Cape Cod for at least an overnight stay, we like visiting the Sea Crest Beach Hotel , which is located right on Old Silver Beach in Falmouth. It’s perfect for that quintessential family beach experience.

Another great resort option is Ocean Edge Resort , located in Brewster. Ocean Edge offers so many family activities, including special programming during school vacations and holidays. It has many different types of lodging, from rooms to villas.

In addition to beaches, you’ll also find museums such as the Whydah Whaling Museum and the Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich. Mini golf is another popular summer activity, and make sure you get a famous lobster roll at some point on your vacation.

See hotels in Cape Cod here .

Nantucket

Take a ferry from the mainland (or fly in) for a getaway to Nantucket. This island is located about 30 miles from the mainland in Hyannis but feels almost like another country. It’s relatively small, about 47 miles total, but there’s lots to do.

Activities include nature walks, biking, beaches, and shopping. We love the Nantucket Whaling Museum, which offers a view of Nantucket’s history as a whaling city. It’s very busy in the summer, but late spring and early fall can also be a great time to visit.

Ferries do book up during the busy season, so make reservations in advance. Car ferries are available, but we prefer to stay right in town and walk around.

There are several different resort/hotel options on Nantucket, including the White Elephant right in town. See more hotel reviews here .

Martha's Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard

Located about 4 miles from the coast of Cape Cod is Martha’s Vineyard. This island, larger than Nantucket, has several different towns to visit.

It has more activities than Nantucket and is a shorter ferry ride. While you are there, you can visit beaches, shop, eat delicious food, bike, take nature walks, and more.

There are several towns on the island, all with different things to offer. These include Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. Like Nantucket, you can bring your car on the island if you book a car ferry. Because Martha’s Vineyard is pretty big, I’d recommend bringing your car if you’d like to explore the island.

See hotels on Martha’s Vineyard here .

Springfield

Closer to Western Massachusetts is Springfield, Massachusetts. While Springfield isn’t a major tourist city in Massachusetts, it’s home to a few places you may want to check out, either for a day trip or on your drive out of Massachusetts.

In the fall, it hosts the Eastern States Exposition, which is one of the top ten fairs in the country. Taking place over 17 days in the late summer/early fall, the Big E (as it’s called) offers agriculture events, concerts, amusement rides, fun amusement-park food/snacks, and more. It’s fun to visit at least once with your family.

Springfield is also home to the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Dr. Seuss Museum. Basketball lovers should definitely visit the Hall of Fame at least once. It doesn’t take too long to tour, although there are events and activities that also take place there.

Six Flags Over New England is located in nearby Agawam and is open in season. Springfield is located about 2 hours from Boston and three hours and fifteen minutes from New York City.

See hotels in Springfield here .

The Berkshires

The mountainous region in Western Massachusetts is a popular summer vacation destination. You’ll find culture, farming, art, and outdoor activities. In the summer, visit the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home, Tanglewood.

See hotels in the Berkshires here .

Fitchburg is home to the Boston-area Great Wolf Lodge resort. Guests of the resort can enjoy a number of fun kids’ activities including a huge indoor water park, an arcade, and a ropes course, among other activities. You’ll have to stay on the property to use the water park, so plan an overnight stay.

Guests can use the water park on both check-in day and check-out day. See our full Great Wolf Lodge New England Resort here.

Sturbridge MA, located west of Boston, features Old Sturbridge Village. It’s New England’s largest outdoor living history museum. You can learn all about life in the 19th century in New England from various historians throughout the exhibits. If you are headed to New York, Sturbridge is on the way.

Want to learn more about the American Revolution? Travel west of Boston to Concord Massachusetts, where you can visit Minute Man National Historical Park. There are various events offered throughout the year, but you can visit at any time to explore the park. Here are some tours of Concord you can book .

South of Boston, near the Rhode Island border, is Fall River. This waterfront city is home to Battleship Cove, an attraction that offers five historic naval ships, including the USS Massachusetts.

Outside of Massachusetts

Massachusetts is a relatively small state, and some of the best day trips can expand beyond Massachusetts. Options include Newport, Rhode Island, where you can explore the Newport Mansions and the beautiful Cliff Walk, as well as Salem New Hampshire, where you can visit the amusement park Canobie Lake Park.

Frequently Asked Questions

I would recommend staying in Boston. If you want to do a lot of things in one particular area, you may want to drive there and spend one or two nights.

Absolutely, you should have a car. If you are only visiting Boston, you may not need one. But if you are going beyond Boston, you’ll want a car.

Boston’s Logan International Airport is a major airport with many daily flights. It’s likely to be the most convenient airport.

Places to visit in Massachusetts and things to do there including big cities and small towns for road trips. Destinations include Boston, Cape Cod, Western Massachusetts, Rockport, and Salem.

Costa Rica with kids Arenal Volcano

Costa Rica is an ideal tropical location for a family vacation. Often considered an adventure destination, the country offers so much more than just adrenaline-pumping activities. It’s also a nature-lover’s paradise.

With waterfalls, rainforests, volcanoes, and exotic wildlife, visiting Costa Rica with kids can also be a learning experience. The country is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Central America and is a great place for kids to explore, have fun, and possibly even see animals like sloths and monkeys up close.

If you are considering a trip to Costa Rica with kids, there are a few things to know before your trip that will make your Costa Rica family vacation more enjoyable. But trust us, even if your children are still really young, visiting Costa Rica with a toddler or a baby can even be a great experience.

This guide to visiting Costa Rica with kids includes essential information to help you prepare for your trip, plus a list of the top family-friendly activities and our detailed 6-day Costa Rica itinerary .

Table of Contents

Our experience visiting Costa Rica with kids

Costa Rica with kids - Guanacaste black sand beach at sunset

Visiting Costa Rica with kids can be a great experience for the entire family regardless of how old or young your children are.

In fact, we visited Costa Rica when our daughter was just a baby. Luckily, we had grandparents traveling with us on a multigenerational vacation , so they were happy to lend a hand which allowed us to do some of the activities that are not exactly baby-friendly.

Although known for its extreme sports, there is plenty to do in Costa Rica with kids who are too young for activities like zip-lining and rappelling. Although now that our daughter is older, we can’t wait to take her back!

Things to know before visiting Costa Rica with kids

Planning a family trip involves much more than just choosing the best kid-friendly activities. So, here are a few things to know before your Costa Rica travels.

Pura Vida signage

Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Latin America. The people of Costa Rica live by the saying Pura Vida , which literally translates to “pure life”. Essentially to live pura vida is to live a stress-free life of happiness and relaxation.

For this reason, Costa Rica is a very safe place to visit with kids. Although, as with any destination, we always recommend vigilance, being aware of your surroundings, and trusting your gut instinct at all times.

We even found driving in Costa Rica safe , but more on the roads below!

our waitress in Costa Rica carrying our baby around a gift shop

Costa Rica is a very welcoming destination for families. It is one of the things we liked most about the country! The Ticos, as Costa Rican locals are called, generally seem to love children, especially babies.

Everywhere we went people would stop us to talk to our daughter, and waitresses would offer to hold her while we dined in restaurants.

a sign at a restaurant in spanish

Spanish is the official language in Costa Rica, but you can get by speaking English only. Most people in Costa Rica know some English, particularly in areas where tourism is the main industry.

However, as with any foreign country, we recommend at least attempting to learn a few words in the native language . Regardless of where we go, it has been our experience that locals always appreciate it when you at least try to speak their language.

The colón is the currency of Costa Rica. If you are staying at a resort, many offer currency exchange services. But a lot of the shops and restaurants in touristy parts of Costa Rica also accept American dollars.

While most of Central America is thought to be cheap to visit, Costa Rica is one of the more expensive Latin American countries .

However, it is possible to travel through Costa Rica on a budget . You just have to plan ahead, do a little research, and know what things cost in advance.

a hot spring in costa rica

Unlike most countries in Central America, in Costa Rica it is generally safe to drink the water out of the tap or faucet.

Although if traveling with small children, we usually opt for bottled water when traveling just to err on the side of caution. It is especially good to have bottled water handy if traveling with a baby who uses formula .

Also, it’s important to note that some of the resorts use reclaimed water which is not potable. It is safe for washing but do check first before drinking it freely.

Infrastructure

a paved main road and a turn off gravel road in costa rica

The roads are not great in Costa Rica, but they aren’t horrible either. We read a lot of horror stories about the roads in Costa Rica prior to our trip, so we were pleasantly surprised to find driving in Costa Rica wasn’t as bad as we expected.

Still, you will likely find some dirt roads or roads that have huge potholes due to excessive rainfall, particularly in the areas of the country that are densely covered in forests.

When to visit Costa Rica with kids

fog covering the rainforest in costa rica

Costa Rica basically has two seasons: dry season and wet season.

The dry season, which lasts from December through April, is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica. During the dry season, you will likely experience way fewer pop-up rainstorms and way more sunshine.

The wet season, which lasts from May through November, is still a great time to visit Costa Rica, but be prepared for afternoon rain that typically comes down heavy but only lasts a short time. The other downfall of visiting Costa Rica during the wet season is that it may be cloudy, even if it is not raining.

How to get to Costa Rica

Costa Rica has two international airports, Liberia (Daniel Oduber) and San Jose (Juan Santamaria).

Which airport you fly into will depend on where you want to visit in Costa Rica. We flew into Liberia, located in the northern region of Guanacaste.

Our 6-day Costa Rica itinerary primarily covers two regions, Guanacaste and the Arenal Volcano area. However, if you are wanting to visit the east coast of Costa Rica or the southern area of the country, flying into the capital city of San Jose is the better option.

Where to stay in Costa Rica with kids

looking up at a blue sky through palm trees

We spent our Costa Rica family vacation in the regions of Guanacaste and Arenal. With only 6 days in Costa Rica, it is best to limit yourself to two regions, otherwise you will spend all your time driving. Here are a few hotels and places to stay in each region.

Whether you are wanting to visit the beach or the rainforest, Costa Rica offers some incredible and affordable options for both. We split our time between the beaches and the rainforests.

Overlooking the pool at Riu Guanacaste Costa Roca

Guanacaste is known for its arid, dry climate and stunning coastline. The coast is popular with beachgoers looking for an all-inclusive resort vacation.

We stayed at the RIU Guanacaste Resort . While the resort had everything that we needed for a couple short days, it lacked amenities for kids.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste that is more suited for families, Planet Hollywood Beach Resort is located right on Culebra Bay only 19 miles from the Liberia airport. The resort has a phenomenal kids club and lots of great on-site activities and off-site excursions for families who are visiting Costa Rica with kids.

hot springs in Costa Rica

The area surrounding Arenal Volcano National Park is known for its adventure activities and majestic scenery. It is another widely popular area of Costa Rica to visit.

We stayed at Hotel El Silencio del Campo , which offers private villas or chalets, on-site hot springs, and a complimentary farm experience.

Read our full review of Hotel El Silencio del Campo or check rates and book your stay here .

Other popular hotels in the Arenal area for those visiting Costa Rica are the Baldi Hot Springs Resort Hotel , which has on-site water slides and waterfalls that are great for both kids and adults, and Tabacon Thermal Resort , which is known for having the best hot springs in the area.

Following the itinerary above, here are some of the best things to do in Costa Rica with kids, or without!

Guanacaste Beaches

Black sand beach in Guanacaste Costa Rica

Guanacaste is home to endless beaches. What makes the beaches in Guanacaste so unique is that they are all so different. You’ll find unforgettable white sand beaches, as well as gold, gray and black sand beaches.

If you have more than 6 days in Costa Rica and love the beach life, spend a few extra days beach hopping in Guanacaste. Some of the most popular beaches to check out are Playa Hermosa, Playa Negra, Playa Samara and Playa Grande.

Find the best tours and beach activities in Guanacaste

Llanos de Cortez waterfall in Guanacaste

Llanos de Cortes waterfall is arguably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica. Only a 30-minute drive from Liberia, it makes for a great stop when driving between Guanacaste and Arenal.

The waterfall cascades into a shallow and calm pool of water that is perfect for swimming. The chilly water is very refreshing, particularly on a hot day. Around the waterfall, you can often spot monkeys hanging out in the tree canopies above.

overlooking lake Arenal

The largest lake in Costa Rica, Lake Arenal sits at the base of the majestic Arenal Volcano. The man-made lake generates power for the country and is a popular spot for adventure activities like kayaking and windsurfing, as well as fishing for rainbow bass.

Cafe y Macadamia is a great place to take in the beauty of Lake Arenal while enjoying some delicious Costa Rican cuisine.

Book a kayaking adventure on Lake Arenal

La Fortuna Waterfall

Perhaps one of the most visited and one of the best waterfalls in Costa Rica , La Fortuna Waterfall, or Catarata Rio Fortuna, is a 230-foot-tall cascade located in a biological reserve which is part of the Arenal Volcano National Park.

Like Llanos de Cortes, the pool at the base of the water is popular for swimming. But the hike to get there is a bit longer than the short walk to Llanos de Cortes. It will only take about 15 minutes to descend down the 540 steps to the waterfall, but climbing back up the staircase on the return trek will take at least double that amount of time.

If hiking isn’t your thing, you can book a horseback ride that also takes you to the waterfall. Either way, experiencing the beautiful Costa Rica landmark is a must for anyone visiting the Arenal region, as it is one of the most popular attractions in the country.

Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano shrouded in clouds

The Arenal Volcano is not only a Costa Rican landmark, but also an important national park and conservation area. The volcano, which is often concealed in a dense layer of fog, is Costa Rica’s most active volcano. It last erupted in 2010 and is currently considered to be in a resting phase.

While you cannot climb Arenal Volcano, there are lots of great guided hikes in the national park that take you to its base and through fields of volcanic rock that remain from the lava flow from the 1968 eruption that devastated the area.

Find the best tours and hikes in Arenal Volcano National Park

Tabacon Hot Springs

After hiking you’ll probably be ready for some much-needed relaxation. There is no better way to rejuvenate your muscles and your mind than a dip in Costa Rica’s famous hot springs.

With all the geothermal activity around the Arenal Volcano, the area is also world-renowned for its beautiful thermal springs.

Tabacon Thermal Resort is home to the most popular and most beautiful hot springs in the area. A visit to the hot springs is included if you choose to stay at the swanky resort.

However, you can also book a visit separately or book a combo tour that includes the La Fortuna waterfall, a guided Arenal hike, and a visit to the hot springs.

Zip line Tour

ziplining Costa Rica

Ziplining in Costa Rica is one of the activities the country is best known for.

Not only is this adrenaline-pumping adventure safe, but it is also a suitable activity for kids as young as 5 years old and doesn’t require a lot of skill or physical fitness.

With 90% of the native animals and 50% of the country’s flora and fauna living in the canopies of the rainforest, booking a ziplining canopy tour is a great way to possibly spot exotic birds, monkeys, sloths, and other creatures that dwell in the rainforest.

Hanging Bridge Tour

Arenal Hanging Bridges Costa Rica

Like a zip line tour, the hanging bridges in the Arenal Rainforest take you into the tree canopies on long suspension bridges.

During times of dense fog, it will seem like you’re walking directly into the clouds, without being able to see the other side of the bridge. There are several different hanging bridge tours in Arenal .

You can easily book a hanging bridge tour online to experience Costa Rica from the treetops.

Cows at a farm experience tour, a great kid-friendly activity in Costa Rica with kids

Costa Rica is a very green country, not just in the way of lush vegetation, but conservation is important to them, and many Costa Ricans even grow their food.

A farm experience is a great way to teach children about respecting the planet while also entertaining them. This was included at Hotel Silencio del Campo where we stayed.

However, if you choose a different hotel, you can always book a farm experience separately. This tour includes sloth watching, cow milking on a traditional Costa Rican family farm, and a traditional lunch prepared with farm-fresh ingredients.

Finally, a rafting tour along Rio Balsa is another great kid-friendly activity in Costa Rica. With class 2-3 rapids, the guided rafting experience is great for adventurous families visiting Costa Rica with kids or first-time rafters who want to test out their adrenaline.

When you aren’t giggling and getting splashed with water from the river, you’ll also enjoy spotting wildlife along the banks as you paddle through the slowing rolling rapids in an isolated rainforest river canyon.

Other family-friendly things to do in Costa Rica for kids

We could have stayed in Costa Rica much longer as there were many parts of the country we were unable to explore due to time constraints. We would recommend giving yourself at least ten days in Costa Rica to see more of the breathtaking beauty Costa Rica has to offer.

Here are a few other kid-friendly things to add to your Costa Rica itinerary if you have extra time.

Manuel Antonio National Park

a monkey in Manuel Antonio national park

The most visited national park in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio is located along the central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica southwest of San Jose.

The park is home to beautiful beaches, forest trails and of course, wildlife!

Butterfly Conservatory

Located on the southern side of Lake Arenal, the Butterfly Conservatory would be an easy addition to this itinerary. Butterflies are one of Costa Rica’s biggest exports. You can see all the different species of butterflies at the conservatory.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

day trip with toddler

Similar to Arenal, Monteverde Cloud Forest is a popular destination for ziplining and hang bridge tours.

Spanning more than 10,000 acres, the forest reserve draws roughly 70,000 visitors each year who come to see the colorful assortment of flora and fauna in a dream-like forest almost always covered in clouds.

Tortuguero National Park

Another one of the fascinating national parks in Costa Rica, Tortuguero would be especially cool for those visiting during the late summer, when the Leatherback Turtle eggs hatch, and the baby turtles make their way to the ocean.

Like many activities in Costa Rica, Tortuguero National Park would be an incredible learning experience for kids and adults alike. Located along the northeast coastline, the park is best explored by boat, kayak or canoe.

Sloth Sanctuary

day trip with toddler

Located near Puerto Limon along the east coast of Costa Rica, the sloth sanctuary is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. They offer sloth tours every day but Monday where you can meet and learn about sloths and their habitat.

Your family may even be able to see baby sloths in the sloth nursery. How cute is that?! Need I say more?

La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park

Home to one of the most famous waterfalls in Costa Rica and the largest animal sanctuary, La Paz Waterfall Gardens is just 45 minutes from San Jose International Airport, making it an easy addition to any Costa Rica itinerary that starts or ends in San Jose.

You can easily take a day trip to the nature park or stop there on your way to Arenal.

25 toddler beach essentials [+ packing list] for a perfect day at the beach.

two toddler boys on a beach

Top tips for taking a toddler to the beach – timing your day right, toddler beach hacks & essential toddler beach gear you’ll want to pack

Ah, those toddler years. Screams of joy one minute and terror and distress the next, with huge dollops of fierce independence, lightbulb moments of learning and cuteness thrown in!

Activities like taking a family day out to the beach require some planning and preparation. With the right gear packed and putting a bit of thought into your timing and activities, it will be one of the best experiences you’ll share with your toddler – even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time!

It takes just a little extra preparation when taking a toddler on a beach trip for the first time to prepare for all eventualities.

This post is part of our toddler travel advice series & family beach vacation series

Younger tots in tow? See our complete guide to taking a baby to the beach here

What to Consider Before Taking a Toddler to the Beach

A whole day at the beach with a toddler? A whole beach vacation? You will need to be prepared and base it on the weather and circumstances you face.

Before we dive into your toddler beach essentials, these are our top 3 tips for planning the perfect toddler day at the beach:

Toddler Beach Tip#1: Time of Day

Whilst toddlers are a little more resilient to the sun than babies, their skin is still a lot more sensitive to the sun than adults, and they can dehydrate quickly.

It is always best to avoid being out for the entire day in the sun with a toddler, avoiding the sun’s rays, particularly from 11 am to 3 pm. A whole day out can, of course, be unavoidable if you have older siblings too, so do consider all the sun safety tips we have below.

If you have a choice, mornings and late afternoons certainly work best for younger children when the UV rays are less harmful.

We talk a lot more about sun protection and dealing with hot climates in this article.

Toddler Beach Tip #2: Hitting the waves with toddlers

Some tots will run towards water with wild abandon, while others will be terrified of it. There’s really no telling until your toddler sees real-life waves.

Even if they’re comfortable with a pool at home, the ocean can be far more unpredictable, and many mysterious things can lurk beneath. Take your first approach to the water easy. If you think they’ll be cautious, try calmer lakes or inlets first before hitting the big waves of a beach.

If you have the opportunity to use a pool at home too (or even just a deep bathtub ) get your toddler used to submerging their head and holding their breath. It’s not wise to make their first encounter with deep water at a beach.

Toddle Beach Tip #3: Knowing when to call it a day

It’s all fun and games with toddlers; until it isn’t. The sand that was perfectly fine an hour ago is now icky and scratchy, the seaweed is smelly, and the waves are too loud. You know the drill!

If your toddler is still a day napper, consider how you can work this into your day; will a sun shelter and blankie in the shade be enough to get them asleep? Or will you need to plan your departure from the beach around lunchtime before hangry pangs take control?

Like all travel with toddlers – you need to read the situation and be flexible with your plans.

Beach Essentials For Toddlers

Before planning a toddler beach vacation, or even just a day at the beach with your toddler, you’ll want to consider packing these essentials toddler items to make sure your day runs smoothly:

Toddler Beach Essential: UV Sunsuit/Rash Guard

Your toddler’s first line of defence against UV rays is a full arm and leg sunsuit or rashguard . It’s essential that you have UV resistant material covering your toddler’s skin when they’ll be out in the sun all day.

Long sleeves are preferred for complete sun protection, and make sure you’re still covering all exposed skin with sun cream.

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Wetsuit

It is not advisable to take babies and toddlers into cold water as they simply cannot regulate their temperature the same way older kids and adults can; however, if you’re worried about the water being a little nippy on their skin why not look into a  toddler wetsuit ?

Toddler Beach Essential: Sunscreen

A vital part of any day out in the sun with young children, no matter their skin colouring, to protect them from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Toddler skin can still be quite sensitive so look for brands specifically made to be gentle on the skin, and preferably reef safe .

We use a factor 50+ cream (not spray) all over their bodies – even if they’re wearing rash guards it’s an extra layer of protection – and specialised face sunscreen.

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Sun Hat

Toddlers’ heads are still quite sensitive to the sun’s rays, so it’s important to keep their little heads protected. Look for hats that provide wide coverage over the ears and neck and preferably a breathable mesh lining. A bonus is a chin strap, as toddlers are still prone to easily losing things!

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Sunglasses

Often a challenge to keep them safely on a toddler’s head all day – and their growing bodies, some might start to outgrow the smaller baby brands – but oh so important for their safety in the sun. Even if you failed to keep sunglasses on your baby (many hate them), do try again at the toddler age.

Toddler Beach Essential: Pop Up Beach Tent

If you’re planning on spending any length of time outside during the peak sunlight hours of the day, an anti-UV tent for your toddlers is well worth the packing space. It will be your toddler’s first line of defence against the UV rays when they’re out of the water, keeping them out of direct sunlight.

Forget makeshift tents and draping towels over chairs; beach tents are an affordable piece of travel kit that can last your family for years – not just on the beach but for picnics and family days out in the park.

Sunba Youth Anti UV Beach Shade

Beach Tent, Sunba Youth Anti UV Beach Shade, Instant Portable Tent Sun Shelter, Pop Up Baby Beach Tent, for 2-3 Person (Blue)

We have found beach tents to be far more sturdy against the elements than a beach umbrella and provide an ideal spot for nap time, still much needed by many toddlers!

You can find all of our favourite beach tents for tiny babies through to those that can fit the entire family here

If your tent doesn’t come with a liner, we’d also recommend a large sand-proof and waterproof beach blanket. No guarantee it will keep them totally sand-free, but it’s a good place to start.

Toddler Beach Essential: Reusable Swim Diapers

Most toddlers will still need a swim diaper when heading to the beach. Even if toilet trained (or in the process) this will prevent any little accidents in the water or on the beach.

Whilst there is a huge range of easy-to-use disposable swim diapers for babies and toddlers out there (we found Huggies Little Swimmers the best), we do recommend regular beachgoers invest in the far more enviro-friendly option of reusable swim diapers .

And once they’re finished in the water, do change them back into a dry diaper. The swim diapers don’t absorb wee, so unless you’re happy to hose down any further little accidents…

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Beach Shoes

On hot sand, shelly or rocky beaches, your toddler can really benefit from having a pair of water shoes .

These aqua shoes have a soft, flexible sole and fit more like socks but provide that extra layer of protection for sensitive little feet. For any sort of rock pool or scrambling, we always use our little kid’s Keen Stingrays , ideal for little feet at the beach with a sturdier sole.

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Floatation Vest

Your toddler is no doubt starting to gain confidence around the water but is not yet a competent swimmer. Having a wearable flotation device is essential in the water for toddlers (not just a floatie).

How much flotation you give is dependent on their stage but we recommend a full vest for younger toddlers, graduating to a puddle jumper or wings as they grow in size and confidence.

Elejolie Kids Swim Vest for Child Learn Swiming Training,Infant Safety Swim Aid Jacket for Toddler 2 3 4 5 6 Years Old,Arm Wings for Baby 22-66lbs (Jellyfish)

Note there is a difference between a life jacket and a floatation device aimed at helping your child learn to swim. Most toddler flotation vests are NOT life jackets. For example, if you are undertaking any boating, SUP or Kayaking activities, you’ll want a proper coastguard-approved life jacket.

You can see our complete guide to swimming vests and kids’ life jackets here

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Goggles

Careula Kids Swim Goggles, Swimming Goggles for Boys Girls Kid Toddlers Age 2-12

At the toddler age group, even if your child is not yet swimming, they should be gaining the confidence to put their head underwater. Goggles will immensely help with this as they’ll be able to see much clearer, and the water won’t sting their eyes. Look for brands with adjustable straps that will grow with your child; the smallest normally fit til about 6 years of age.

Toddler Beach Essential: A Family Beach Bag (& lots of other bags!)

Skip Hop Portable Baby Changing Pad, Pronto, Triangles

Instead of your usual diaper bag , you’ll want that to upgrade for the beach to a family-sized waterproof bag to fit all your gear. A great beach bag should last your family for years!

You will still need diaper supplies with you but a quick change mat such as the Skip Hop Pronto is a great option that sits inside your larger beach bag and should do the job for a day at the beach.

And always bring plenty of  extra waterproof cloth bags  to separate your wet and dry clothing, plus zip loc bags for any valuables you don’t want to get wet and sandy at all.

Toddler Beach Essential: Sippy Cups, Water Bottles & Snacks

Tommee Tippee non-spill insulated sippee

It should go without saying you need to keep your toddler hydrated at the beach. Make sure they have access to some cool water – no guarantees they’ll keep it totally sand-free but we like the Tommee Tippee non-spill insulated sippee to reduce the chances of getting sand in the bottle.

If your tot is still on milk bottles we’d recommend an insulated cooler bag for keeping their milk fresh, ready and again – sand-free!

And snacks – what can we say – always take snacks any time you leave the house with toddlers! Again try and reduce the chances of spillage and sand getting in everything with no-spill cups, but there are no guarantees on this one, sorry mamas!

A cute addition you can try with toddlers is to freeze some juice cartons overnight, then they have a nice cool refreshing treat to sip on at the beach. Try these juice cup holders to prevent mess and stop complaints of freezing hands!

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Toys For the Beach

Digging, squashing, sifting – (most) toddlers absolutely love to play with sand so through in a few extra gadgets for them to enjoy on the beach. An inflatable beach ball is easy to add, plus a digger truck if space allows!

If taking sand toys, it’s always advisable to store these in separate mesh bags from the rest of your beach gear.

We still recommend for the toddler age group – if you have the space – to pack an inflatable baby pool . Although it might seem counterintuitive to take a pool when you’re at the beach, it can be a great way to give your tot a safe place to play with their toys, away from the sand and waves.

See our complete guide to the best toddler beach toys for a fun day at the beach here. You may also find this guide to camping toys for toddlers has some handy suggestions on the best outdoor toys to pack for younger kids.

Toddler Beach Essential: A Beach Wagon

These sturdy wheeled wagons can be a much better bet for your trip to the beach than a traditional  travel stroller ; most strollers are simply not made for soft surfaces like sandy beaches.

Bob Gear Revolution Flex 3.0

Toddler Beach Essential: Toddler Beach Chair

We considered leaving this one off as we know it’s something we abandoned once we had more than one child – and already enough paraphernalia with us you’d think we were camping for a week – but I know toddler beach chairs are popular!

They DO have many benefits if you have your beach wagon with you and can take the extra bulk and weight. Toddler beach chairs help keep your toddler off the ground when they’re eating, and those with a sun canopy give them a cool spot out of the sun as an alternative to a tent.

It’s an optional one for a toddler day at the beach, not an essential but you may want to give it a try:

This one is especially for you, parents! We said these would be some of the best days of their childhood. While you’re caught up in a whirlwind of slapping on sunscreen and securing sunhats for the 15th time, don’t forget to capture a few snaps too.

A waterproof casing for your phone will do the job if you don’t want to invest in a waterproof camera . Pop it around your neck and get out there and enjoy making memories on your family beach day!

More to Pack for a Toddler Beach Vacation

Wait, there’s still more?! Got more family members to consider? As your family grows and you have tots, babies and older kids to contend with all at once, head on over to  our complete family guide to a day at the beach  for all your beach packing considerations.

Other items to include in your beach bag not mentioned above:

  • Several changes of clothes  – wets can get soiled and need changing during the day, as well as a complete change of dry clothes for heading home.
  • A Wet Bag – all that soggy, sandy beachwear needs to go somewhere! Always have a system for keeping the wet clothes separated from the dry.
  • Extra towels  – as well as their hoody towels, we always keep a few spare large towels in the car too. It’s highly likely anything that’s been on the beach ends up sandy and wet; if your toddler needs extra drying and wrapping up on the way home it’s best to have at least something that will be sand-free!
  • Diaper rash ointment  – wearing wet bathers and abrasion from sand can lead to discomfort downstairs, always good to have a tube of diaper paste in your bag (won’t deny adults sometimes use it too!).
  • Garbage bags  – think dirty diapers, wet wipes, snack wrappers; never leave anything behind.
  • First aid kit  – accidents happen everywhere, it’s always wise to have stashed in your beach bag a small medical kit with the basics.
  • Eye drops – One of the most common medical emergencies toddlers can have at the beach is sand in their eyes. It’s a good idea to include it in your regular first aid kit  emergency saline drops .
  • Dusting powder   – try a little bit of this talc-free baby powder on your toddler’s skin before hitting the beach, it works a treat keeping the sand off! Alternatively, even good old kitchen cornstarch can work.

Pint-sized Treasures

8 Fun and Simple Day Trips for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Are you aching to get outside? Just because you have toddlers or preschoolers doesn’t mean you can’t get out and have some fun! Here are some day trips that you and your tiny companions will enjoy! Who said big kids get all the fun anyway?

summer day trips for preschoolers

Psst! I kept these ideas super simple. Why? Because you’re a mom and some days we need simple — just to function. I’m talking frozen pizza and goldfish for lunch simple. So don’t see the words “day trip” and feel like you need to run and hide your head under the pillow. You won’t have to plan a million outfits or three meals. But, you will want to take your camera to catch all your favorite, fun memories!

fun day trips for toddlers and preschoolers

So, get outside your home and enjoy some outings with your kids. Yes, you will have to change out of your jammies, but trust me, you WILL be glad you did. So get your toddler and preschoolers ready to have some simple fun — outside your home!

[include id=”6″ title=”inside post ad”]

Fun, Simple Day Trips for Preschoolers

  • The local zoo. Pack some sunscreen, bottled water, snacks, a camera and head out as early as possible for this day trip. Don’t forget to take along some spending money in case you spy some really cute souvenirs at the gift shop. This was one of my fave parts of a zoo trip when I was a munchkin!

Preschoolers love seeing animals up close and learning about them so take extra time to read your kiddos the information that is available about each exhibit. Many local zoos also offer a farm-life area that is hands-on where kids can feed lots of baby animals. What preschooler doesn’t love feeding the baby goats a bottle of milk!

  • A berry farm. Check out your local farm for some good pickin’! Pick the juiciest strawberries and head home and bake pies, strawberry shortcake or try out some strawberry smoothies!
  • The library. Libraries today offer more than just books. There are DVDS, books on CD and other fun things to check out. Many libraries also offer special shows and activities during the summer. Some have special activity rooms where kids can knit, crochet, paint, make bead necklaces and other hands-on educational activities . The library is also a nice place for moms to relax. Enjoy the quiet while your child plays some computer games, board games or checks out the newest books for his or her age group. Libraries also offer summer reading programs that offer fun perks like free meals, free treats, free toys and even some free passes to favorite play areas .
  • The park. Recreational parks are adding more and more cool stuff everyday. Some add long bike trails, fish ponds, amazingly tall slides and of course the classic favorite — swings. The park is best enjoyed early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the bees, hot sun and crowd.
  • Indoor playgrounds. This option is fun for parents and kids. Most indoor playgrounds offer a cozy nook for the parents to enjoy some Joe and read some books while the kids jump, run and jump in a supervised, air-conditioned facility. Once you locate your favorite spot, keep an ear out for upcoming deals and promotions. Some of these playgrounds offer seasonal discounts that can save your family a good bit of money.
  • Children’s Museum. These museums are full of sensory learning experiences for all ages. Many have pretend grocery stores, IMAX theaters, craft areas and fish petting areas. These tend to be a little bit more expensive than other day outings, but well worth a planned visit. You could also include the grandparents to make this a more memorable trip.
  • Special shows. Check out your city’s popular entertainment coliseum to see when special kid-friendly shows are available. Winnie the Pooh, Sesame Street and other favorites often have fun kid performances country-wide during the summer to provide top-notch entertainment for small children.
  • Build-a-bear. Spend the day making stuffed animals! Kids love to create things, and making a teddy bear or other stuffed animal is no exception. Your child will be able to pick out their own stuffed animal, help stuff it and place a heart inside. Your child will also be given the important responsibility of naming the stuffed animal. Special keepsakes and a certificate will be given to your child as well that he can keep to remember this special outing. The Build-a-bear stuffed animals are also high quality and can last for quite a while. Definitely worth the experience and memories!

Your guide to packing for toddlers

Summer Hull

Many travelers consider packing for a trip to be the most stressful part of the adventure, especially when little kids are involved and you have to decide what is truly essential and what isn't. There's no exact science to knowing what and how much to bring, especially if you're going on a longer trip. Weather can be unpredictable and, depending on your itinerary, you might need comfortable clothes and shoes one day and a more formal outfit the next. Adding a toddler or two to the mix certainly doesn't make things any easier.

Every kid and every trip is a little different, so preparation is key. It's also important to avoid overpacking as the extra weight is sure to cause more trouble than it's worth, especially if you're paying for checked bag fees . But being underprepared and going without crucial items isn't good either.

Related: Best luggage for kids who travel

Take the time to review (and then double check) what you plan to bring and whether it's a nice-to-have or a must-have item. Consider taking items that can be used for various purposes. For example, a fleece jacket can be used as a blanket on a flight. Or, a light receiving blanket can double as a towel in case of "emergency." Packing cubes are also a great option, especially if you and your child(ren) are using the same suitcase. Give each family member a different-colored set of cubes and you'll find that packing and unpacking becomes a lot less of a hassle.

Now, let's take a look at our best tips for packing with little kiddos in tow.

day trip with toddler

More than one outfit per day

When my kids were really little, I'd pack two comfy outfits per day, and I still follow that rule of thumb, to a certain extent with packing some extra items. I also bring items that can be mixed and matched. That way, if a shirt or pair of pants or shorts get dirty, I don't have to change the entire outfit.

You can get away with fewer clothes over the course of a multiday trip if you have access to a washing machine. But it's smart to pack extra and be realistic about how easily accessible a washing machine might actually be. Also, don't bring anything that you are going to freak out over if it gets stained and you can't wash it right away.

Pro tip: Bring an extra change of clothes for you, too, since the parents are the ones who are usually hit with collateral damage when toddlers implode into a ball of mess.

Again, bring extra, especially if you don't have easy access to a washing machine. Much like with the daytime outfits, you just never know when there will be a diaper malfunction or drink explosion and you need to switch into the backup jammies ASAP.

Toddler's feet grow crazy fast, so make sure the shoes you are bringing for a trip actually fit. Just because they did last week, doesn't mean they will this week. Double-check, and then bring an extra pair just in case. (Here are some of our favorite kid shoes for travel .) If you are using a seasonal shoe (such as a snow boot) that your kiddo hasn't worn since last year, it's almost certain that you'll need a new pair, so plan ahead.

day trip with toddler

Pack way more diapers than you think you'll need if your toddler is still in that phase of life. On one of our first plane trips years ago with my now nine-year-old, I packed what I thought to be enough diapers for the trip. It wasn't. We weren't able to get the diapers she was used to where we were, and while it wasn't the end of the world, it just wasn't ideal.

So, my advice is to bring more than you think you need, even if you are going to buy some (or ship some) to your final destination. They pack pretty easily and are just about the last thing you want to run out of. Also, remember some plastic sacks to hold diapers in case you have to change one where there isn't an immediately accessible trash can.

If your toddler is potty-training, bring more pull-ups than normal and use them more than normal as accidents on the road (or in the sky) just aren't pretty.

Related: Best credit cards for families

Lots of them. See above. And don't forget, wipes can be multipurpose. They can be used to clean messy hands, faces, tray tables or to get some food off of clothes in a pinch.

Hair accessories

Be sure to not only pack a brush or comb that will work for your kiddo, but for toddlers with long hair — rubber bands or barrettes, too.

If your child has longer hair, these hair accessories will keep the hair out of his or her face. Whatever you use at home, bring extra. Rubber bands break and barrettes magically disappear, so having backups is never a bad thing.

Pack your kids' shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, washcloth, diaper cream, comb, etc. Babies and toddlers don't typically use adult toiletries, so hotels won't always offer a good substitute if you forget your baby or toddler bath items. Make sure to throw them in the bag (contained in a plastic bag in case they leak).

When they were toddlers and babies, my daughters would both have upset skin if we tried to use adult soap and a rough washcloth for several days in a row. In the toddler years, we also didn't want to be caught without the miracle of all miracles, Boudreaux's Butt Paste . Seriously, we had to make a 3 a.m. run once while on vacation to try and find some of that magical stuff as our daughter woke up screaming in the middle of the night with a horrible diaper rash. It wasn't funny at the time to us, but I am sure it was humorous to those working in the drugstore at 3 a.m. when my husband made a mad dash there to frantically search for the Butt Paste. Essentials you need at home, need to come with you.

Favorite blankie

Lord, help us all if my oldest daughter's "pink blankie" didn't make a trip. If your kiddo has a favorite stuffed animal or blanket, bring it and guard it with your life. (And pro tip: Have a backup hidden at home, just in case.)

Toys and entertainment

Even though there may be tons to do at your destination, toddlers will often spend time chilling in the room around naps and such. Additionally, whether you are going by plane, train or automobile, toddlers need pretty much constant entertainment -- especially when strapped in.

If your toddler uses a tablet, then don't forget that, a charger and headphones. If they don't, here are some electronics-free entertainment suggestions .

day trip with toddler

Sippy cups, drinks and snacks

Thankfully, toddlers are often past the days of pumped milk, baby water, bottles, formula and baby food. However, assuming whatever food is around will work for a toddler's palate is a dangerous move. Empty sippy cups, crackers, packaged fruit, juice boxes or whatever your toddler snacks on at home are good to have on hand. If your kiddo is a milk drinker, plan to bring that along, too, as it isn't as readily available on planes and such as you might imagine.

Location-specific gear

Depending on where you are going, you may need certain types of gear. This could include items like a swimsuit, swim diaper, swim hat, goggles, floaties, jogging stroller, snowsuit, baby-sized parachute... whatever. If you're headed to a wintry climate, check out our packing tips for toddlers on a cold-weather trip .

day trip with toddler

Sleeping arrangements

This may not be something you pack so much as something you plan for since toddlers can be particular with routine. Some options to consider include:

  • BYO pack-and-play or travel crib
  • Request a crib from the hotel or Airbnb
  • Bunk up together

All of these options have pluses and minuses, but think through where you believe your toddler will really sleep on the road and plan accordingly. (And don't just expect the hotel to have a crib without making prior arrangements.) Here are some other tips for keeping your sanity while sharing a hotel room with a little one .

day trip with toddler

Obviously, if your child is on medication, make sure to pack that and keep it handy at all times. But even if they aren't on any regular medications, it is a good idea to bring some common baby meds and Band-Aids just in case they spike a fever, start teething or get a boo-boo. Again, you never know.

Bottom line

If you're traveling with kids, be deliberate when deciding what to pack. Too much "stuff" in your suitcase could drive you crazy. But if you find yourself in the middle of a long flight with a toddler who's just spilled an entire drink on themselves and you forgot to bring an extra change of clothes, you'll be sorry. In the end, bringing what you can to keep your kiddos comfortable will help everyone have a more enjoyable trip.

Combining the pristine beauty of paradise with lively, big-city vibes, Honolulu is one of the best destinations for families who are traveling to Hawaii. The most popular family activities in Honolulu center around history, education, adventure and fun, allowing you to select the activities and excursions that best suit your family's interests.

These are the best Honolulu things for kids to add to your itinerary:

day trip with toddler

1.  Visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial

  • 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, HI 96818
  • Free Admission

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is considered to be one of the most impactful things to do with kids in Honolulu, because it gives them an opportunity to experience one of the most tragic and defining moments of American history for themselves. Operated by the U.S. National Park Service, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Museum and grounds are free to visit, and there are many experiences for visitors to consider.

One of the most moving and awe-inspiring experiences is the USS Arizona Memorial program, which takes visitors by boat to the watery grave of the USS Arizona. When they arrive at the memorial, families are able to pay their respects and enjoy quiet reflection before heading back to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

In addition, visitors can take time to embark on a Ford Island Bus Tour, which goes to the USS Oklahoma and Utah memorials. Considered to be some of the most fascinating sites within the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, these memorials are quieter and less crowded with tourists, which can make it an especially poignant experience.

2.  Visit the Battleship Missouri Memorial

  • 63 Cowpens St., Honolulu, HI 96818
  • $34.99 per adult, $17.49 per child between the ages of 4-12

Resting in the waters of Pearl Harbor, the Battleship Missouri Memorial is an exciting historical attraction that kids of all ages will love. As the last United States battleship ever built, the USS Missouri is a historic artifact that offers insight into what life was like on board a military ship during the World War II era.

Guided tours of the ship are available each day, giving families the opportunity to enjoy a 35-minute experience that offers valuable insight into the inner workings of the ship and the lives of those who served aboard it. Guided tours of the Battleship Missouri Memorial include a ship to the Surrender Deck, which is the site where World War II officially ended.

day trip with toddler

3.  Embark on a Sea Turtle Snorkeling Adventure

  • Maunalua Bay or Haunauma Bay
  • Prices vary based on tour, from $89 to $129 per person

The warm turquoise waters that surround the island of Oahu are home to some of the most majestic sea creatures in the world, including larger-than-life sea turtles. In both Maunalua Bay and Haunauma Bay, you can book a sea turtle snorkeling tour that allows you and your kids to make memories with these four-flippered creatures that will last a lifetime.

Snorkel with Turtles is one company that offers sea turtle snorkeling tours. These guided experiences last for about 2.5 hours, and they guarantee that you will see sea turtles along the way. Even if you have never been snorkeling before, you can move forward with confidence knowing that this is one of the best family activities in Honolulu. Expert snorkeling guides are in the water alongside you, providing you with instructions and information every step of the way.

day trip with toddler

4.  Splash and Play at Waikiki Beach

  • Kalakua Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815
  • No cost for admission

As one of the most famous beaches in all of the world, Waikiki Beach is easily one of the best things to do with kids in Honolulu. In fact a single day on the shores of Waikiki Beach may not be enough — you may want to keep bringing your little ones here day after day to enjoy the impossibly white sand and refreshing waves that crash onto the shore.

These are some of the best things to do and enjoy when spending the day on Waikiki Beach:

  • Take surfing lessons in order to enjoy this popular Hawaiian sport.
  • Building sandcastles together on the shore.
  • Dine at a Waikiki Beach restaurant.
  • Go paddleboarding along the shoreline in order to soak up the Honolulu skyline.

day trip with toddler

5.  Set Sail on a Whale Watching Tour

  • Near Waikiki Beach
  • Cost varies based on the tour

Humpback whales descend upon the shores of Oahu from the months of December through May, making whale-watching tours one of the most popular seasonal family activities in Honolulu. There are many different companies that offer whale-watching tour experiences, allowing you to choose a tour that suits your preferences and your budget.

Regardless of the whale-watching tour company that you choose for your excursion, you will find that these adventures allow you to enjoy a boat ride along the coast of Oahu as you search with your family for the majestic whales that may breach the surface. Humpback whales — known in Hawaii as kohola — are gentle giants with a playful demeanor, and depending on their mood, they may truly give you a show.

day trip with toddler

6.  Spend a Day at the Bishop Museum

  • 1525 Bernice St., Honolulu, HI 96817
  • $33.95 per adult, $25.95 per child between the ages of 4-17

Hawaii is the definition of paradise, and while it may be easy to spend your day in the warm waters along the shore or exploring the trails that wind into the jungles of these islands, it's important that you also spend time introducing your family to the local culture and heritage of this region. The Bishop Museum is dedicated to the natural and cultural history of Hawaii, making it one of the best Honolulu things for kids of all ages.

Established more than 130 years ago, the Bishop Museum has long worked to showcase the authentic culture and traditions of Hawaii through engaging and interactive exhibits. In fact, the museum has curated a collection that now includes more than 25 million natural, cultural and historical treasures, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive museums of Hawaiian history.

day trip with toddler

7.  Explore the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii

  • 2131 Kalia Rd., Honolulu, HI 96815
  • Free admission

Showcasing the strength and resilience of Hawaii's military history, the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is the perfect complement to any historical Honolulu itinerary. This museum boasts free admission and includes exhibits such as Hawaiian warfare, Battery Randolph and the Vietnam War, to name a few.

day trip with toddler

8.  Visit the Honolulu Zoo

  • 151 Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815
  • $21 per adult, $13 per child between the ages of 3-12

5 Places to Travel Abroad With Your Kids This Year

London, lapland, and tanzania are on the cards in 2024..

Is it worth traveling abroad with your kids, especially with so many great options in the United States? Short answer: yes. That’s especially true if you consider one of these family-friendly destinations our writers have visited in recent months. They’ve been roaming with their children in the United Kingdom, Japan, Tanzania, Greece, and Swedish Lapland and have unearthed some great spots for the whole fam for 2024. Just try not to think about the flight there (and especially the flight home) . . .

Osaka, Japan

The entrance of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan.

Theme parks and enticing street food are among the highlights of a visit to Osaka.

Wandering through Osaka’s neon-clad neighborhood of Shinsekai with my son—a hard-to-impress tween with a thirst for photo-worthy culinary creations—we passed takoyaki stands advertising their octopus-based wares with 3D tentacle-covered displays and a conveyor belt sushi joint adorned with an enormous rotating nigiri platter. Ultimately, we were drawn into Jumbo Tsuribune Tsurikichi , a restaurant boasting expansive pools of fish that you can catch with provided bait and rods. Here, they’ll cook and serve whatever you reel in—which, in our case, was a beast large enough to feed a family twice our size.

Memory-making experiences like this are only the beginning here, where maximalist signage beckons hungry travelers at every turn. And despite rising food costs across the globe, affordable eats are still easy to find in Osaka, making it an enticing choice for anyone looking to test their taste buds without breaking the bank. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to love in this dynamic destination, and fun-loving families will find a variety of singular eateries. Dine alongside Pikachu at the popular Pokemon Café or enjoy impossibly cute Mario-inspired meals at Super Nintendo World at Universal Japan , which will soon offer even more options in its new Donkey Kong–themed land , slated to open in 2024.

Where to stay

For an immersive experience, families can sleep on traditional tatami mats at Ukiyoe Ryokan . The Cross Hotel Osaka , meanwhile, provides comfy digs located steps from the bustling food stalls in the Dotonbori area.— Amanda Adler

“I spy” gets a whole lot more interesting when there are leopards, hippos, and warthogs to peep.

Taking a toddler on safari is not for the faint of heart; I knew if I was gonna do it, I needed serious help. Enter Go2Africa , a seasoned tour operator staffed by specialists who’ve traveled extensively with small children throughout East and Southern Africa. These experts knew exactly which camps were the family-friendliest and how to safely travel between them. They arranged private safari drives for us in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site with Africa’s densest population of large animals, and a quiet corner of Serengeti National Park. Over multiple game drives in the two regions, we spotted lions, leopards, hippos, ostriches, flamingos, warthogs, and roughly a gazillion wildebeest, but it was a dazzle of zebras lingering within arm’s reach of our 4x4 that really had my son clapping up a storm.

Check out TAASA Lodge , a boutique bush camp in a 15,000-acre concession north of the Serengeti, and Gibb’s Farm , an 80-acre organic farm and coffee plantation less than an hour from Ngorongoro Crater. Both properties hire guides, trackers, and staff who truly love children, as opposed to merely tolerate them. Both also have swimming pools—a fantastic way for kiddos to spend some time in between game drives. —Ashlea Halpern, contributing editor

Athens, Greece

Ancient history comes alive in Athens.

While history and ancient ruins may seem boring for little ones at first, Athens is actually an entertaining and educational family destination. Before you even leave, get your kids into Greek mythology and history—there’s the graphic novel series Olympians that reinterprets the mythologies and a funny and engaging podcast by National Geographic called Greeking Out that my eight-year-old son loves. Once you land, kids will be eager to see the sites that otherwise might look like crumbling dirt. When I visited last summer with my husband and two young kids, I booked a private tour with Be a Greek specifically meant for families. Our guide kept both of my children (and my husband and I) engaged with a scavenger hunt, trivia, games, and dynamic storytelling as we traipsed around the city, ticking off sites like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium, and Syntagma Square to see the changing of the presidential guard.

Visiting the Acropolis is a bit more challenging, so be sure to go in early morning or evening when it’s cooler and less crowded, and leave the stroller behind (way too many steps!). Kids will also enjoy the Acropolis Museum (request a “family backpack” for educational resources, puzzles, and more); riding the bright red Athens Happy Train ; going up Mount Lycabettus via cable car; and strolling around the picturesque Plaka neighborhood. When you need to escape the heat, head outside the city center to the Athens Riviera for some time at Astir Beach or to the still-in-progress Ellinikon , which already features an incredible playground and park, with more to come.

To be in the center, stay at the new boutique Apollo Palm Hotel , which offers triple rooms perfect for a family of three (or four if one child is in a crib, which can be provided) while still boasting a chic design, gorgeous rooftop bar, and delicious breakfast buffet. For a resort experience, complete with a kids club, beach, and pool, the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has spacious rooms and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff who clearly love children.— Devorah Lev-Tov

The Jokkmokk market has been around for hundreds of years.

Swedish Lapland

My kids were just toddlers when we visited Swedish Lapland’s Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, where I pushed them in strollers as they teetered across packed-snow floors in rooms carved out from river ice by artists from around the world. (We sanely slept in the warm accommodations on site.)

On a visit this past winter on my own, I found several other reasons to plot a trip back soon with my now-older crew. The best winter adventures in this part of Sweden come with experiential elements that go beyond chasing the northern lights. At Arctic Bath in the small hamlet of Harads, I watched a British family with elementary school–age kids brave cold plunges together following a sauna session, stepping down a metal ladder straight into the frozen Lule River and whooping it up before beelining it for the outdoor hot tubs.

Nearby, the whimsical variety of cabins on stilts at Treehotel —including one shaped like a bird’s nest and another like a UFO—were pure fantastical fun, with ice fishing and snowshoeing among the activities. Sapmi Nature Camp offers three-night packages to stay with Sámi hosts in private lavvu tents on the family’s grazing lands for reindeer while learning about their modern way of life. And if you’re here in early February, the excitement of the annual Jokkmokk Winter Market draws hundreds of Indigenous people from all over the Sápmi region of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia for an outdoor festival with live music, shopping for silverwork and traditional clothing, and many more activities.

All of the aforementioned stays are a treat worth planning a trip around. But I’m dreaming of a multi-generational winter adventure at Fjellborg Arctic Lodge , where you can arrive via dogsled from nearby Jukkasjärvi. Families stay in a luxurious four-bedroom cabin with its own sauna and outdoor hot tub overlooking Lake Väkkärä. (Smaller cabins can accommodate more people right nearby.) The lodge’s wilderness guides lead all manner of excursions—including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.— Terry Ward

London, U.K.

Buildings in London, UK

With musicals, green spaces, and seemingly endless restaurants, no two days in London are the same.

Courtesy of One Aldwych

From a wickedly funny Yeoman Warder guide at the Tower to a bike tour with London Bicycle and a visit to the Harry Potter studios (where all eight movies were filmed), my family’s weeklong trip across the pond proved to be equal parts educational and fun. We also adored the Matilda musical, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book, in the West End, with all four of us singing along to its catchy tunes as we left the theater. The city’s many green spaces (Hyde Park; Kensington Gardens, with the Princess Diana Memorial Playground; Battersea Park) also allow ample opportunity for little legs to stretch, run, and stop to smell the roses. With a food scene that’s the stuff of legend, eating at Indian street food chain Dishoom and plant-based Mallow in Borough Market were also musts and didn’t disappoint.

London has many great hotels . I liked the elegant 101-room One Aldwych in the heart of Covent Garden, within blocks of theaters, restaurants, and museums, such as the fantastic London Transport Museum (where kids can see double-decker buses and grown-ups can marvel at the history of the Tube). Along with spacious suites, thoughtful touches like the daily replenished complimentary mini-bar (with biscuits and chips to keep little ones happy) and a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” themed afternoon tea make the hotel truly perfect for families.— Tanvi Chheda

"Our mission at SpaceKids is to reach children at a young age and get them excited about all of the careers available in the space industry," Sharon Hagle, Founder of SpaceKids Global and a former private spaceflyer on a Blue Origin tourist flight , said in a release. "We are bringing the possibility of space to kids everywhere with opportunities like the SpaceKids Press Squad.

"My flight to space alongside my husband, Marc, was life-changing, and we can't wait for these eight lucky kids to experience an out-of-this-world adventure, too! We hope to inspire a new generation of space explorers and future leaders to pursue STEAM careers," Hagle continued.

Here's the details of what each winner will receive if selected:
