A customer guide to traveling with Delta

Editor's note: This article was most recently revised and updated Apr. 9, 2024 to include new information about boarding zones.

At Delta, our team of 100,000 is focused on delivering a reliable, high-quality experience and minimizing inconvenience when circumstances disrupt scheduled operations. We deeply value the trust customers place in us to get them to their destination safely and on time. That said, we also understand the journey to people and places that connect the world sometimes doesn't go as expected.

Our culture is founded on the principle of having our customers’ backs, particularly if they experience a delay, misconnect or cancellation. We stand by our commitment to ensure customers get to where they need to be on a safe and clean flight, on time and with their bags.

The below provides steps you can take to make the most of your Delta travel experience – not only during the busy holiday season – but every time you choose to fly Delta.

We remain committed to taking care of all customers – supporting every individual throughout their travel journey. Here’s what we can do to help when it’s needed:

Know Before You Go

Join delta skymiles® to help our teams better serve you and stay connected in the air.

When you  create a SkyMiles account , you get more than just miles earned toward your next trip. Your SkyMiles account ensures Delta people more seamlessly know your travel details and preferences and can aid with reaccommodating should disruptions in your travel occur. Knowing you is better for serving you. Keeping your SkyMiles profile information up to date can help Delta teams reach you quickly and allows for direct contact and updates when needed.

Additionally, customers with SkyMiles accounts can access fast, free Wi-Fi  presented by T-Mobile onboard most domestic mainline flights to stay connected throughout the journey. As part of the onboard Wi-Fi experience, Delta teams have also designed two entertainment products – Delta Sync Wi-Fi and Delta Sync seatback – that complement each other throughout the duration of a flight and give customers even more ways to enjoy their travel journey across devices. This connectivity at scale is designed to fuel our version of more personalized travel, powered by your SkyMiles Membership.

Download or update the Fly Delta app

Delta’s digital tools offer quick and seamless options to make changes to your itinerary – either in the Fly Delta app, on  delta.com  or by using our  messaging  feature for further assistance.

Most times, the app provides the same tools and flexibility as a call to our Reservations center – allowing customers to make changes in real-time while on the go. Click on the “Today” tab in the app for boarding information, upgrade status, baggage location and key self-service shortcuts like same-day changes. The tab is updated in real-time with the latest and most important information customers need to make sure you never miss gate changes or a change in boarding times.

If you’re a SkyMiles member, logging into the app with your unique SkyMiles membership number and mobile number will allow us to contact you if needed and better serve you as you travel (make sure your mobile number is updated and accurate for day-of travel!).

Turned off notifications by mistake? Find the notifications selection in your device's Settings app and ensure Fly Delta app notifications are turned on. Manage your device's sleep mode settings accordingly, too, to avoid notifications being silenced.

Make sure to keep an eye out for any emails or text messages you receive from Delta with essential updates on your flight status, travel documents and what to know before you go to the airport. (This information is also available in  My Trips .)

Passport check: Renew early and validate

If you have plans to travel internationally, make sure to confirm your destination’s passport requirements and cushion enough time to get your passport renewed. Many countries will not grant entry to a traveler unless the passport expires at least six months after the final day of travel. That said, if your passport has less than six months remaining until it expires, plan and allow for enough time to renew before you go.

A pro tip: After renewing your passport and creating a SkyMiles account, be sure to add your passport credentials into the Fly Delta app and get it verified when you are ready to check in – it’ll save time during your next trip!

Breeze through security

To speed up your airport experience, consider applying for TSA PreCheck® and opt in for Delta Digital ID when departing from ATL, DTW, LAX, LGA and JFK. Digital ID uses facial-matching technology to let customers check bags and move through security without showing a physical government ID, providing a seamless, hands-free way to navigate the airport. This technology is optional and eligible to customers who:

Have a TSA PreCheck® membership.

Have passport information and a Known Traveler Number stored in their Delta profile.

Have a (free) SkyMiles membership.

Have the Fly Delta app

Know Your Zone

Starting May 1, Delta will introduce numbered boarding zones for all flights to provide customers with more clarity about boarding sequence. Delta will still offer pre-board opportunities for customers who need extra time or assistance, followed by active-duty military, then Delta 360 Members. The boarding order will not change, beginning with pre-boarding, then Delta One or First Class customers boarding in Zone 1, followed by Diamond Medallions and Delta Premium Select customers boarding in Zone 2. See the breakdown of boarding by zone .

Customer boarding passes—including printed boarding passes and those accessed via the Fly Delta app—will reflect the new zone numbers, along with updated sequencing on airport screens and in gate announcements. Zones 1-4 will use the Sky Priority lane and Zones 5-8 will use the General Boarding lane, as they do today. Boarding lane signs will be updated to show boarding zone numbers .

Familiarize yourself with resources for customers with special needs

If you or one of your travel companions needs special assistance due to sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities, Delta and the TSA have a number of resources available to you.

  • Atlanta and Minneapolis hubs offer familiarization tours that allow families with disabilities to practice the process of traveling through an airport in preparation for travel. At MSP, customers can tour a mock cabin and meet with volunteers to ready themselves for their journeys.
  • Many airports, including Delta hubs ATL, LGA and SEA, offer sensory rooms for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families. To use a sensory room, locate a Delta Red Coat for assistance. Review more resources for customers on the autism spectrum, including a complete list of available sensory rooms, here .
  • Visit Delta.com for complete accessible travel services , including information on wheelchair assistance, service animals, dietary needs and allergies, and more.

Change or cancel your flight without a change fee

At Delta, we know that plans change. That’s why we allow customers who have purchased tickets for travel within the U.S. or traveling internationally from the U.S. to change or cancel their travel plans without a change fee. This includes tickets purchased for travel originating in the U.S. in Delta’s First Class, Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin, except for Basic Economy tickets. Note: Fare differences for ticket changes will still apply.

At the airport

Pack thoughtfully.

Remember to take anything you might need on the plane, like phones or medication, out of your checked luggage first. Lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage.

If your bag is delayed, proceed to the Delta Baggage Service Office in the baggage claim area, where you’ll be greeted by a Delta professional for additional assistance.

Arrive early

As a general rule, plan to arrive three hours prior to your departure time – especially on heavy travel days.

Take advantage of in-airport prioritized messaging

In Delta’s U.S. hubs, customers experiencing mid-journey disruptions may access expedited Reservations service through a dedicated messaging channel that can assist with immediate travel needs.

If you experience a delay, you may use the Fly Delta app to self-service, message our customer service team, or locate a Need Help Center where you’ll be greeted by a Delta professional for additional assistance.

How Delta people are working to support you in case of flight delays or cancellations

“care while waiting” carts at the gate.

To ease the disruption of unexpected delays, “care while waiting” carts stocked with water and snacks are often available at the gate to help refresh customers waiting on their flight. In some cases, flight attendants can also request that these extra supplies be brought onto a parked aircraft.

Vouchers for hotels, meals, ground transportation for unexpected stays

Vouchers can often ensure more comfort during uncertain or unpredictable travel. Meal vouchers will be provided at the airport to customers if a cancellation or delay within Delta’s control causes a wait of three hours or more beyond the scheduled departure time. Hotel accommodations and ground transportation will also be provided at Delta contracted facilities, based on availability, if customers are inconvenienced overnight while away from their home and the cause of the delay, misconnect or cancellation is within Delta's control.

Flight cancellations and refunds

When cancellations become necessary as a last resort, Delta Reservations specialists coordinate with our Operations and Customer Center to get impacted customers on the next available Delta flight. If necessary, we will rebook customers on flights operated by other airlines. If a customer’s new itinerary no longer fits their travel needs, Delta continues to provide full and timely refunds to eligible passengers. Customers have options to request a refund  on Delta.com. Delta teams strive to notify customers of itinerary changes as far in advance as possible. We’ll send updates directly to a mobile device or by email if this contact information is included during booking or added later via My Trips online.

A waiver allows customers to change their itinerary with no fare differences if they remain in the same cabin as originally booked. Delta most commonly issues waivers ahead of weather events that we know are likely to cause cancellations and delays – allowing customers to make sure they get where they need to go by flying earlier or later than initially anticipated. Once posted to  delta.com , customers with travel to, from or through a city listed will receive a notification of the waiver via email, Fly Delta app notifications, or SMS messaging. Customers will be guided from there through the process of making changes to their itinerary, should they choose to do so.

How to reach Delta Air Lines customer service

Understand what delta customer service can help with, change your itinerary online, know which flights qualify for cash refunds, the bottom line.

In this era of flight changes and cancellations, airline customer service representatives have their work cut out for them.

If you’re planning to travel with Delta Air Lines and need support, here are key tips for successfully contacting Delta customer service and getting the help you need.

» Learn more: The complete guide to Delta Air Lines SkyMiles

When you need help with your Delta flight, there are several ways to reach out.

Call Delta customer service on the phone

Want to speak with a live Delta agent about a reservation? Call the customer service number for Delta Air Lines at 800-221-1212. For SkyMiles-related questions, call 800-323-2323 and have your SkyMiles number handy.

Gold and Silver Medallion members get priority when calling either Delta customer service phone number. But Delta Platinum and Diamond Medallion members get top priority customer service. These top-tier elites can call the dedicated phone line found in the Contact Us section of the Fly Delta phone app or on the back of your membership card.

Tweet @Delta for help

If repetitive hold music isn’t your jam, then we recommend posting your question on Twitter and tagging Delta with the handle @Delta, or you can send a Twitter direct message to that account. You might reach the airline quicker by tweeting at it instead of calling it.

Chat live on an Apple or Android device

On the go? You can chat live with Delta on an Apple or Android device. Just go to the Need Help? page on delta.com and click on the “Message Us” button. A window will pop up inviting you to chat with a virtual assistant.

This can be helpful for addressing common problems like adding a SkyMiles number to a reservation or making other small changes. And it can be faster than waiting for a phone agent or social media representative.

delta manage my trip

If you have to cancel your Delta flight or request a refund, a customer service rep can be a lifesaver. Can’t or don’t want to select your seat online? A Delta rep can help with that, too. Plus, you can rely on Delta customer service for any question not easily answered on their website — be it about baggage allowances or SkyMiles redemptions.

If you used SkyMiles to book a flight on a SkyTeam partner airline, you can call Delta to get the record locator for your ticket that will let you select your seat or manage your booking directly through the other airline.

However, calling isn’t the only way to get specific issues resolved.

Most changes and cancellations can be made online (see section below).

To file a baggage claim, use this online form .

To request miles from a trip or a partner activity, log in to your SkyMiles account and fill out a mileage credit request form.

To provide general feedback or to fill out a complaint, go to Feedback & Complaints .

Gone are the days when calling the airline was the only way to make changes to your itinerary. Delta supports most changes and cancellations through its website and app. Here’s how:

Locate the confirmation number in your reservation email and enter it at Delta.com to pull up the booking. Alternatively, you can navigate to the “My Trips” section in your Delta SkyMiles account and click on the trip you’d like to change.

Click on the red “Modify Flight” button in the top right corner.

Then, you’ll be given a choice of whether you would like to change the flight or cancel. Select the “Start Flight Change” option.

This change screen option shows all the flights included in the particular reservation; you’ll need to select the flight or flights you wish to change by checking the box next to the flight.

Click “Find New Flights” to advance to the next page.

At this step, all of your new flight options will appear and you'll select the flight you’d like to change it to and the amount you paid for the existing ticket will be applied to the cost of the new ticket price. You will either have to pay the balance as usual or you’ll receive a refund or an eCredit for the fare difference depending on the type of ticket originally booked.

For questions about Delta Vacations, visit this page . For baggage policies, this page may be of help.

» Learn more: Which Delta Air Lines credit card should you get?

If you want to cancel a nonrefundable ticket after the 24-hour grace period, you won’t get a refund to your original form of payment, but you will get an eCredit you can apply toward a future flight . If your new flight costs more, you’ll have to pay the difference in ticket price.

If you want to change or cancel a flight originating in the U.S. that you booked with SkyMiles, you can do so without fees.

To cancel or change a Delta flight, log in to your SkyMiles account, go to My Trips, select a flight you wish to cancel and click on “Modify Flights” at any point before your flight. In some cases, you’ll have to call (with basic economy tickets, for example). But in most cases, you should be able to change or cancel your flight online or in the Fly Delta app.

» Learn more: Plan your next SkyMiles redemption for your dream trip — Here's how

No matter the question, you should be able to find answers if you search online or call the airline for help.

Thanks to a no-fee change policy, even flight changes and cancellations can be done on the website without having to speak to anyone, and e-credits are issued automatically.

Still, Delta reps are just a phone call or text message away in case of more complicated requests. For less urgent questions, head to Twitter.

By doing so, you can unlock a plethora of benefits, including earning and redeeming miles, enjoying elite status perks, and accessing exclusive offers.

In this article, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of adding a trip to your Delta SkyMiles account. Whether you’re a long-time member or new to the program, our comprehensive instructions will ensure that you can easily book your flights, earn miles, and make the most of your travel experience.

Before we delve into the details, let’s take a moment to understand the advantages of adding a trip to your Delta SkyMiles account. By doing so, you will not only earn miles based on the distance flown but also qualify for elite status tiers such as Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Medallion. These tiers come with additional perks such as priority boarding, complimentary upgrades, and access to luxurious airport lounges.

Additionally, having your trip registered in your Delta SkyMiles account enables you to easily manage your flight details, view your itinerary, and make any necessary changes or cancellations. It’s a convenient way to have all your travel information organized in one place.

So, whether you’re embarking on a business trip, planning a family vacation, or jetting off to an exotic destination, let’s dive into the process of adding your trip to your Delta SkyMiles account. It’s time to make your travel experience even more rewarding!

Step 1: Sign in to your Delta SkyMiles account

The first step in adding a trip to your Delta SkyMiles account is to sign in to your account. If you already have an account, simply visit the Delta Air Lines website and locate the “Sign In” or “My Delta” option. Click on it, and it will take you to a login page where you can enter your credentials.

If you don’t have a Delta SkyMiles account yet, you can easily create one by clicking on the “Sign Up” or “Join” option on the Delta Air Lines website. Follow the instructions to provide your personal details, contact information, and create a login ID and password.

Once you have successfully signed in to your Delta SkyMiles account, you will have access to a range of features and benefits. These include managing your bookings, earning and redeeming miles, checking your flight status, and taking advantage of exclusive offers.

Remember to keep your login credentials safe and secure, and avoid sharing them with others. This will ensure that your account information remains protected and your trips can be added without any unauthorized access.

Now that you’ve signed in to your Delta SkyMiles account, you’re ready to move on to the next step of adding your trip. Stay tuned for Step 2, where we will guide you through the process of booking your trip with Delta Air Lines.

Step 2: Click on “Book a Trip”

Once you are signed in to your Delta SkyMiles account, it’s time to start the process of adding your trip. The next step is to click on the “Book a Trip” option, which is usually prominently displayed on the Delta Air Lines homepage or easily accessible from the main navigation menu.

When you click on “Book a Trip,” you will be directed to a page where you can enter your travel details. This is where you can specify your departure and arrival locations, travel dates, the number of passengers, and other required information.

Before you start entering your travel details, it is recommended to have some basic information ready. This includes your desired travel dates, the names of all passengers, any specific preferences (such as cabin class or seat selection), and any other travel requirements you may have.

Once you have gathered all the necessary information, proceed to the “Book a Trip” page and begin filling in the required fields. Start by entering your departure airport or city in the appropriate field. Delta Air Lines has an extensive network, so you’ll have plenty of choices when it comes to selecting your departure location.

Next, enter your desired destination airport or city. Delta Air Lines flies to numerous domestic and international destinations, so you can explore a wide range of options based on your travel plans.

After entering your departure and destination locations, select your preferred travel dates. You can either enter specific dates or use the calendar feature to choose from available options. If your travel dates are flexible, you can explore the “Flexible Dates” or “Search by Month” options, which will showcase a range of fares for different dates.

Once you have entered all the necessary travel details, click on the “Search” or “Find Flights” button. This will initiate a search for available flights based on your criteria.

Stay tuned for Step 3, where we will guide you on how to enter your travel details and select your flight options for your trip with Delta Air Lines.

Step 3: Enter your travel details

After clicking on “Book a Trip” and initiating a flight search, you will be directed to a page where you can enter your travel details. This step is crucial in finding the most suitable flights for your trip with Delta Air Lines.

On the travel details page, you will find various fields to fill out. Start by selecting the number of passengers traveling with you. This can include adults, children, and infants. Make sure to accurately enter the number of passengers to ensure accurate pricing and availability.

Next, choose your desired cabin class. Delta Air Lines offers several options, including Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First class. Each class comes with its own set of amenities and benefits, so pick the one that best suits your preferences and budget.

Now, it’s time to specify whether you are looking for a one-way or round-trip flight. Select the appropriate option based on your travel plans. If you’re only looking for a one-way flight, you can skip the return date field. However, if you’re booking a round-trip flight, make sure to enter both departure and return dates.

Additionally, you may have the option to select a particular time of day for your flights. Delta Air Lines offers various flight options throughout the day, allowing you to choose the most convenient departure and arrival times for your trip.

As you enter your travel details, the search results will automatically update to display available flights that match your criteria. You can see the different flight options, along with their respective prices, flight durations, and layover information.

Remember to review your travel details carefully before proceeding to the next step. Double-check that the passenger count, cabin class, travel dates, and other information are accurate. This will ensure that the search results align with your preferences and needs.

Once you are satisfied with the entered travel details, click on the “Continue” or “Search Flights” button. This will take you to the next step, where you can now select the actual flight options for your trip.

Stay tuned for Step 4, where we will guide you on how to choose the best flight options that suit your travel needs with Delta Air Lines.

Step 4: Select your flight options

After entering your travel details, it’s time to select the flight options that best suit your needs. Delta Air Lines presents you with a range of choices based on your preferences, including flight times, layovers, and pricing.

On the flight options page, you’ll see a list of available flights, organized by departure and arrival times. You can further refine your options by using the filters provided. Common filters include non-stop flights, preferred airlines, and specific airports for layovers.

Take your time to review the flight options and consider factors such as flight duration, layover duration, and departure/arrival times. Keep in mind that the price of the flight can vary depending on the chosen options, so it’s important to balance your preferences with your budget.

Once you have identified the flight option that suits your needs the best, click on the “Select” or “Choose” button next to it. This will add the flight to your itinerary and proceed you to the next step to review and confirm your trip.

If you’re looking for more flexibility or have specific requirements, Delta Air Lines offers additional features such as Delta Comfort+ and Preferred Seat selection. Delta Comfort+ provides extra legroom and additional amenities, while Preferred Seat selection allows you to choose seats with desired features such as more space, window views, or proximity to the exit.

After selecting your flight options, it’s always advisable to review the details before proceeding. Check the departure and arrival times, layover durations, and any additional services or upgrades you have chosen.

Take note of any baggage allowances and fees associated with your selected flights. Delta Air Lines offers different baggage policies based on the route and class of service, so make sure you understand the guidelines to avoid any surprises at the airport.

Once you are satisfied with your flight selection and have reviewed all the necessary details, click on the “Continue” or “Proceed to Checkout” button to move forward with the booking process.

Stay tuned for Step 5, where we will guide you through the process of reviewing and confirming your trip with Delta Air Lines.

Step 5: Review and confirm your trip

After selecting your flight options, it’s important to review and confirm the details of your trip before proceeding with the booking. This step ensures that all the information is accurate and allows you to make any necessary changes or adjustments.

On the review page, you’ll see a summary of your trip, including the chosen flights, travel dates, passenger names, and any additional services or upgrades you have selected. Take the time to carefully review each detail and ensure everything is correct.

Check that the flight times and layover durations align with your preferences and travel plans. Verify the passenger names and make sure they match the names on the official identification documents you will be using for the trip.

Pay attention to any additional services or upgrades you have selected, such as seat preferences, Delta Comfort+, or Preferred Seat options. Confirm that these choices meet your needs and align with your budget.

Review the pricing details, including the base fare, taxes, and any applicable fees or charges. Take note of the total cost of the trip and ensure it fits within your planned budget.

If you need to make any changes or adjustments to your trip, most booking platforms or Delta Air Lines’ website will have an option to modify your booking. You can typically adjust your travel dates, select different flights, or make changes to passenger details, subject to availability and fare rules.

Once you have thoroughly reviewed and confirmed the details of your trip, it’s time to proceed with the booking. Look for the “Confirm” or “Book Now” button on the review page and click on it to finalize your reservation.

At this stage, you may be prompted to provide payment information to complete the booking. Delta Air Lines accepts various payment methods, including credit/debit cards and electronic wallets.

Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email or itinerary with all the relevant details of your trip. Make sure to save and keep the confirmation for future reference.

Now that you have reviewed and confirmed your trip, you are one step closer to enjoying your Delta Air Lines experience. Stay tuned for Step 6, where we will guide you on how to earn and redeem SkyMiles for your trip.

Step 6: Complete the booking process

After reviewing and confirming your trip details, it’s time to complete the booking process and secure your flights with Delta Air Lines. This step involves providing your payment details and finalizing the transaction.

On the payment page, you will be prompted to enter your preferred method of payment. Delta Air Lines accepts major credit and debit cards, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, as well as electronic wallets like Apple Pay and PayPal, depending on the available options.

Enter your payment information carefully, ensuring that the details are accurate to avoid any issues with the transaction. Be aware that some credit cards may offer additional benefits, such as travel insurance or rewards, so consider using a card that aligns with your preferences.

Once you have entered your payment details, review the booking summary one last time to confirm that all information is accurate. Pay close attention to the total amount due, including the base fare, taxes, and any additional fees or charges.

If you have any applicable discount codes or promotional offers, there may be an option to enter them on the payment page. Make sure to enter the codes correctly to benefit from any available savings or perks.

Once you are satisfied with the details, proceed to submit your payment. The booking system will process your payment and, if successful, provide a confirmation page with your booking reference number and a summary of your trip details.

You will also receive a confirmation email containing your e-ticket, itinerary, and any other important information related to your booking. Be sure to double-check the email for accuracy and keep the confirmation in a safe place for future reference.

At this point, your booking with Delta Air Lines is complete, and you’re all set to embark on your well-planned trip. If you have any further questions or need assistance, Delta Air Lines’ customer support is readily available to help.

Secure a better seat: The ultimate guide to getting upgraded on Delta flights

Darren Murph

Delta Air Lines' Medallion elite status has plenty of perks, including same-day confirmed changes, international lounge access and Choice Benefits . Still, one perk sits above all others when it comes to chasing status: the allure of a free seat upgrade.

There's nothing quite as magical as paying for one class of service and being upgraded into a superior cabin, be it premium economy, business class or first class. However, the upgrade process remains shrouded in mystery. For example, who is eligible for upgrades? When do these upgrades process?

From complimentary elite upgrades, SkyMiles upgrades and Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates to understanding the upgrade priority process, we're here to demystify it all. So, buckle up and keep reading to find out how you can snag a seat in the front of the Delta plane.

Complimentary Delta upgrades

delta manage my trip

All Delta Medallion elite members are eligible for day-of-departure unlimited complimentary upgrades to the Delta One experience on flights within the U.S., including flights to Hawaii.

While it pays to understand the intricacies below, it's worth mentioning that Delta is systematically selling more first-class tickets. Its revenue maximization models are pricing first-class tickets to encourage more people to buy them outright. Therefore, you may notice this when you view a Delta reservation and are offered a buy-up upgrade.

Unfortunately, the more first-class tickets Delta sells, the fewer are available for complimentary upgrades.

Below are the Delta products that are eligible for complimentary upgrades, including paid tickets, SkyMiles award tickets, Pay with Miles tickets and SkyMiles Companion Certificates:

  • Delta Comfort+ (typically offered on Delta-operated flights and select international flights)
  • First class (typically offered on Delta-operated domestic flights and flights to nearby destinations like the Caribbean and Central America)
  • Delta One (typically offered on long-haul international flights and certain cross-country domestic flights)

Delta's top-tier Medallions (Diamond) get preference over lower-tier Medallions, and timing is everything. Diamond and Platinum Medallion members can immediately clear from Main Cabin into Comfort+ upon booking if space is available. At the same time, Gold members must wait until 72 hours before departure to clear into Comfort+, and Silver members must wait until 24 hours before departure.

For flights with heavy passenger loads — from New York to San Francisco, for example — the Comfort+ cabin is often full when Gold and Silver Medallions are eligible to clear. However, last-minute upgrades at the gate can happen.

delta manage my trip

For Delta One domestic upgrades, Medallion members will clear on the day of departure following the same clearance priority hierarchy as with first-class upgrades, subject to upgrade availability.

Even if your upgrade doesn't clear in advance, you may still clear at the gate. If an upgrade is still not confirmed at your upgrade window or when you check in, your pending upgrade request will automatically be added to the airport standby list for a potential upgrade at the gate before you board. You may view your spot on the standby list in the "My Trips" section of the Delta app and at the gate information display at the airport.

Medallion members are also eligible for complimentary upgrades on Aeromexico-operated flights within Mexico and between Mexico and the U.S., Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia and Ecuador. Upgrades are available to all ticketed passengers except those seated in basic economy. Medallion members can be upgraded to Premier on Aeromexico flights but not AM Plus. Once a SkyMiles number is added to an eligible Aeromexico reservation, Medallion members will automatically be added to the upgrade list.

Complimentary upgrade hierarchy

Here's how Delta will determine your spot on the upgrade list:

  • Medallion status
  • Fare class groupings — higher-priced fares are ranked above lower-priced fares per the following order: B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X and V, then SkyMiles award tickets, then Pay with Miles
  • Million Miler status
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card holders
  • Delta corporate travelers (ticket must include your employer's corporate ticket designator)
  • Medallion Qualification Dollars earned in the current calendar year
  • Date and time of upgrade request

Related: Earn more SkyMiles with these current Delta Amex credit card welcome bonuses

If two members are identical at a given level, it goes down the above list until the tie is broken. For instance, if two Platinum Medallion members are traveling on K-fare tickets and one has a Delta Reserve credit card and the other does not, the card-holding passenger will be prioritized.

Diamond and Platinum Medallion members will clear first-class upgrades beginning 120 hours (or five days) before departure. Gold Medallion members will clear beginning 72 hours (three days) before departure, and Silver Medallion members will clear beginning 24 hours (one day) before departure, subject to upgrade availability.

delta manage my trip

It's also worth noting that upgrade certificates ( Regional Upgrade Certificates and Global Upgrade Certificates ) and upgrades with miles are prioritized ahead of these complimentary upgrades.

Exclusions and fine print on Delta upgrades

Unfortunately, not all tickets are eligible for complimentary upgrades — here's what's excluded:

  • Basic economy (E) fares are not eligible for paid or Medallion complimentary upgrades, regardless of Medallion or other elite status.
  • Delta Premium Select fares are not eligible for a complimentary Medallion upgrade outside of the U.S.
  • Delta One seats on flights that start or end outside of the U.S. do not qualify for a complimentary Medallion upgrade.
  • Complimentary upgrades are not available for selection by any passenger while aboard the aircraft, regardless of status or fare class.
  • Except for eligible Pay with Miles tickets and eligible award tickets, complimentary upgrades are not available on basic economy fares.
  • Companions who change their itinerary and no longer travel with the higher-tiered Medallion after the change are not eligible for a complimentary upgrade at the higher-tiered member's clearance window. If an upgrade were confirmed before the itinerary change, a reservation for a companion without Medallion status would be changed to reflect the original class of service for the new itinerary, and they would no longer be eligible for a complimentary upgrade. If the companion is a Medallion member, the reservation will be changed to reflect the original class of service. It will continue to be eligible for an upgrade at the companion's own clearance priority. If the Medallion or partner airline elite member is no longer traveling on their original reservation, the companion traveling on the original reservation will no longer be eligible for complimentary Delta Comfort+ seating. Their Delta Comfort+ seat assignment may be removed.

Improving your chances of a Delta upgrade

Beyond racing for a higher tier of Delta's Medallion status, you can better your chances of receiving a complimentary upgrade by opening a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card . These cards also net you 15 visits per year (effective Feb. 1, 2025) to Delta's global network of Sky Club airport lounges . To earn an unlimited number of visits each year, the total eligible purchases on the card must equal $75,000 or more between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and each calendar year thereafter.

If possible, consider booking a corporate ticket through your employer. Also, if you're a Platinum/Diamond Medallion with free same-day change abilities, you can sniff around and change to a less popular route on your day of departure. ExpertFlyer — owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures — is an excellent tool for searching flights. You can use the "Flight Availability" functionality to understand how many seats remain open/unsold.

You'll often have a better shot at an upgrade if you avoid peak business travel periods. This lets you compete with fewer frequent flyers. Generally, this means avoiding flying on Sunday night, Monday morning and pretty much all day Friday if you want to sidestep top-tier business travelers.

Delta upgrade certificates

Delta offers two types of dedicated upgrade certificates, known as Global Upgrade Certificates and Regional Upgrade Certificates . The only way to get them is to earn Platinum or Diamond Medallion status and select them using your Choice Benefits .

Upgrade certificates have a higher priority than complimentary upgrades and may be requested and, subject to availability, cleared when you book your ticket. In other words, they're a hyper-exclusive and extremely powerful way to sit in the front of the plane.

GUCs, available exclusively for Diamond Medallion members, offer upgrades on both international and domestic flights with Delta, along with select flights with KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air and Aeromexico. RUCs, available for Diamond and Platinum Medallion members, offer upgrades on the same routes as complimentary upgrades, including all flights with first class and the domestic Delta One experience.

Related: The ultimate guide to Delta Choice Benefits

As a Choice Benefits selection, Diamond Medallion members may choose any of the following three options:

  • Four global upgrades
  • Eight regional upgrades
  • Two global upgrades and four regional upgrades

Platinum Medallion members may choose four regional upgrades as their single Choice Benefits selection.

So if you want one of the coveted GUCs, you'll need first to achieve Diamond status, Delta's highest published Medallion tier.

Important notes about Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates

delta manage my trip

These certificates have several quirks and nuances you must know.

These certificates only offer confirmed upgrades for one cabin higher than originally purchased. Main Cabin tickets will upgrade to Premium Select on flights with a Premium Select cabin. Then, the elite member processing the upgrade will be placed on a Delta One upgrade waitlist 24 hours before departure. The good news is that there will be last-seat upgrade availability in Premium Select on international flights. Likewise, last-seat availability will be when you use your GUC to upgrade to a domestic flight, even on Delta One routes.

An RUC or GUC is for one-way travel, so you'd need to burn four to take you and a guest on a round-trip itinerary. You can apply an RUC or GUC to a paid ticket, a SkyMiles award ticket, a Pay with Miles ticket and a companion ticket. Crucially, you cannot apply an RUC or a GUC to a basic economy (E fare) ticket, regardless of your Medallion status level.

While these certificates are not fully transferable to others, Delta will allow you to apply your RUC or GUC to a guest's ticket if that person is traveling on the same flight as you. Even if you're booked on separate reservations (e.g., your company books your economy ticket, and you book your spouse's economy ticket later), you can use your upgrade certificates for both passengers.

Each GUC or RUC will expire at the end of the Medallion Year that was associated with the Choice Benefits selection. Each certificate may be used to upgrade flights operated by Delta Air Lines or Delta Connection booked in the P, A, G, W, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V fare classes, and may also be used to upgrade on SkyMiles awards, Pay with Miles tickets and companion certificates.

Upgrading on Delta partner flights with certificates

delta manage my trip

You can also use GUCs to upgrade select partner flights. GUCs applied to Air France and Virgin Atlantic flights will only move you from economy to premium economy unless you book a premium economy ticket outright. Note that all partner upgrades must be confirmed 24 hours before departure.

These are the rules for upgrading partner-operated flights:

Upgrading KLM flights

  • Delta-marketed, KLM-operated flights: Main Cabin seats booked in Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V to Z class (business class). This is because KLM does not offer a premium economy cabin on many flights.
  • KLM-marketed, KLM-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to Z (business class).
  • Air France-marketed, KLM-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to Z class (business class).
  • For flights departing Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), Global Upgrade Certificates must be applied prior to check-in with a KLM ticketing agent or at a KLM Crown Lounge.

Upgrading Air France flights

  • Air France-marketed, Air France-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to A class (premium economy) or from W, S or A class to Z class (business class).
  • KLM-marketed, Air France-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, K, H, L, Q, T, N, R or V class can be upgraded to A class (premium economy) or from W, S or A class to Z class (business class).
  • Delta-marketed, Air France-operated flights: Economy seats booked in Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class can be upgraded to A class (premium economy) or from W, S or A class to Z class (business class), or from P, A or G class to Z class (business class).

Upgrading Virgin Atlantic flights

  • Delta-marketed, Virgin Atlantic-operated flights: Economy seats booked in W, S, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class can be upgraded to P class (premium economy), or from P, A or G class to Virgin Atlantic's G class (business class).

Upgrading Aeromexico flights

  • Delta-marketed, Aeromexico-operated flights: Economy seats booked in W, S, Y, B, M, H, Q, K, L, U, T, X or V class can be upgraded to O class (business class).

Upgrading Korean Air flights

  • Delta-marketed, Korean-operated flights: Seats booked in J class can be upgraded to Korean Air's A class, Y or B class booked can be upgraded to Z class, or if you're booked in M class, you can be upgraded to Korean Air's O class.

How to use a Delta upgrade certificate

delta manage my trip

Until recently, you had to call to apply a GUC or an RUC to a Delta-operated ticket. Now, you only have to do this for existing tickets, as new tickets can be upgraded online.

Upgrading a new Delta booking with a certificate

Delta allows you to upgrade new bookings online (but not on the Fly Delta app). You'll see the option to upgrade your ticket with a GUC or an RUC on the checkout page.

Look for the "Upgrade Certificate Request" box and select the flight you'd like to upgrade. Then, select the type of upgrade certificate you'd like to use.

delta manage my trip

The upgrade certificate will be automatically applied when you complete your booking.

Upgrading an existing Delta booking with a certificate

For existing bookings, you must dial the phone number given with your associated Medallion tier or the general hotline at 800-323-2323 and make the request. Be sure to call at least three hours before departure to apply your certificate, though 24 hours before departure is strongly recommended.

If you want to confirm an upgrade immediately, search for your flight on the Delta website. Upgrade availability is shown underneath the flight times. Make sure you're logged in to your Delta account, as upgrade availability only shows on elite accounts.

delta manage my trip

If you can avoid waitlisting, do so. Waitlist upgrades are not guaranteed to clear, and they're known to rarely clear on particular routes — such as West Coast gateways to Hawaii.

On itineraries with connections, ask the Delta agent to place upgrade priority on the leg that matters most to you. If you don't clarify this, upgrades can clear on relatively unimportant/short legs while you remain waitlisted on the long leg. The upgrade certificate is considered used if you don't prioritize the hard-to-get leg and the upgrade clears on any other leg of your itinerary.

For example, you don't want to burn a valuable GUC on a 45-minute domestic positioning leg when the leg that matters is the long-haul ride from the U.S. to Europe, Asia, Oceania, etc. Remember, there's no way to "undo" an upgrade clearing. Once it's burned, it's burned.

While upgrade requests on the waitlist can be cleared before you get to the gate, it is more likely that they will be cleared at the gate before departure. If your certificate doesn't clear, it will be automatically reissued to your account and can be used on a future flight.

Delta SkyMiles mileage upgrades

delta manage my trip

While we typically recommend storing up SkyMiles until you can exchange them for a true award ticket, that's not always practical for infrequent flyers. Delta allows its passengers to upgrade their existing tickets with SkyMiles regardless of status.

You can use Delta's Upgrade with Miles feature to upgrade to Delta One, Delta Premium Select, first-class or Delta Comfort+ for eligible flights. If your reservation is eligible for an upgrade, you'll see the option to upgrade in your trip summary.

delta manage my trip

Delta typically prices mileage upgrades by placing a value of roughly 1.07 cents on each SkyMile. In other words, if Delta is charging $60 for a particular seat upgrade, it'll also allow you to part ways with roughly 5,600 SkyMiles to achieve the same upgrade. Just note that you may be able to achieve marginally higher value by booking an award ticket outright.

Buy-up upgrades can also come in handy if you're chasing elite status. You'll earn Medallion Qualification Dollars on the cash or SkyMiles you spend on an upgrade, boosting you toward the next status tier. If you use SkyMiles to upgrade, you'll earn MQDs on the award ticket based on the cash amount of the ticket purchased, excluding taxes and fees.

Bottom line

Getting upgraded for "free" is a glorious thing, and you can better your chances by climbing Delta's Medallion elite ranks and holding a Delta SkyMiles Reserve card or Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business card . You'll also be wise to choose flights that aren't during peak business travel periods, and if there's a connection involved, avoid Delta's largest hubs like Atlanta, Minneapolis, New York (LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport) and Los Angeles.

Using a stash of SkyMiles to upgrade can be a great way to boost your flight experience. Still, you'll want to think carefully before using Upgrade with Miles — Delta will only allow you to extract roughly 1.07 cents per SkyMile via this method.

Upgrade certificates are the most exciting option, but you must reach Platinum or Diamond status to secure them. If you're fortunate enough to have a few in your account, you can strategically plan a dream trip, pay cash for an OK seat and fly there in a great seat.

Delta Air Lines, facing another union attempt to organize flight attendants, is raising their pay

Delta Air Lines, the most profitable U.S. carrier, is raising pay for nonunion employees as it gets ready for another attempt by a union to represent its flights attendants.

CEO Ed Bastian told Delta employees Monday that the airline will boost pay for flight attendants and ground workers by 5%, raise the minimum wage for U.S. workers to $19 per hour, and set aside money for merit raises.

Delta said the increases affect more than 80,000 employees.

“With this increase in base pay and starting rates, we continue our commitment to provide Delta people with industry-leading total compensation for industry-leading performance,” Bastian wrote in a memo to staff. He said the company has raised pay among major work groups by a cumulative 20% to 25% since 2022.

That figure includes base pay and profit-sharing. Delta gave employees $1.4 billion in profit-sharing for 2023.

Delta earned $4.6 billion last year — more than United, American, Southwest and Alaska airlines combined. It was Delta’s biggest profit since 2019, before the pandemic affected U.S. travel.

About 20% of the Atlanta-based airline’s workers are represented by unions — by far the lowest percentage among the nation’s four biggest airlines. Delta pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, but cabin crews, maintenance workers and others are nonunion. Flight attendants narrowly voted against unionizing in 2010, and previous organizing campaigns failed in 2002 and 2008.

The Association of Flight Attendants is trying to change that . President Sara Nelson said her union hopes to gather enough authorization cards from Delta attendants by the end of the year to trigger another election.

“Delta has become the leader in generating profits, and that means Delta flight attendants should be leading on pay and benefits, and they are not,” she said.

Nelson believes that unions are in a stronger place now, even in the largely nonunion South, where the United Auto Workers won an election last week at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee. Nelson’s union is seeking an industry-leading contract at United Airlines, which could bolster its case at Delta.
