COVID-19 – Relief measures and operational changes
we're committed to supporting you.
The situation we're experiencing may be unprecedented, but one thing hasn't changed: We're here for you and always will be. Our teams are putting their all into helping you manage your plan with ease while helping plan members stay healthy and well.
Support measures for plan sponsors
PerformPlus groups (generally under 50 lives)
- Renewals coming up on May 1 will be deferred to July 1
- Renewals coming up on June 1 will be deferred to August 1
- Renewals coming up on July 1 will be deferred to September 1
Non-refund groups under 500 lives
We’ll review deferral requests on a case-by-case basis.
Premium payments
PerformPlus (generally under 50 lives)
We’ve extended the contractual premium grace period by 30 days. This will measure be in place until June 2020.
Non-refund groups under 500 lives
We will review these on a case-by-case basis.
Dental premium credits
Although dental clinics are reopening across the country, we expect the volume of claims will remain lower than usual. Also, we know that the overall financial impact of the pandemic is still a concern for many of you. Therefore, we’re extending the credit for one more month to help you through this challenging time.
The billing will work the same way it did for April and May. If you are a non-refund client, you will receive a 70% dental premium credit for the month of June:
- If you receive a monthly bill from us, we’ll automatically apply the June credit to your July bill. You don’t have to do anything.
- If you produce your own monthly bills, please submit the reduced amounts on your billing statements, applying the June credit to your July statement.
Maintaining benefits during temporary layoffs and unpaid leaves of absence
Whether or not you have a temporary layoff or unpaid leave of absence contractual clause, we're offering you the following options:
- Maintain all benefits, including Disability benefits
- Maintain all benefits, except Disability benefits
- Terminate all benefits
Your decision will be applicable to the entire contract until August 31, 2020. As per our usual process, the disability elimination period will begin on the plan member's scheduled return-to-work date.
Please note that, due to RAMQ requirements in Quebec, Extended Health Care must be maintained if any benefit except Life is extended.
Operational changes
Printing of insurance certificates temporarily suspended.
Due to government recommendations urging Canadians to practice social distancing, we've had to adapt some of our activities to protect the health of our employees and their families.
Printing and mailing of insurance certificates
We have temporarily stopped printing and sending out insurance certificates, and deactivated the functionality allowing you to order insurance certificates via your secure site.
Online services
Please encourage plan members to register for our online services or download the Omni mobile app and give them their contract and certificate numbers so they can do so. This way they’ll continue to have access to the information found on their insurance certificates.
Support measures for plan members
We've also introduced new services and support measures for plan members to ensure they can continue to access health professionals and be reimbursed for the care they receive.

Basic and optional life insurance

Are there any restrictions in the event of death?
There are no restrictions related to the coronavirus.
Can we convert a life insurance amount if salary or hours worked are reduced?
Yes. The usual conversion procedure applies. Therefore, it's possible to convert the amount of life insurance that the insured was entitled to under the group insurance policy into an individual insurance policy.
Will the 31-day conversion deadline be changed during the COVID-19 crisis?
No, the deadline remains the same.
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance
The coronavirus isn't an accident as defined by the policy. This coverage will not pay any benefit for deaths caused by the coronavirus.
Critical illness insurance
Is covid-19 covered, drug insurance, can people get their prescriptions refilled without waiting for them to be renewed so they don't run out of medication.
If the pharmacist believes that the insured's situation ( 14-day quarantine with only 12 days of medication left, rural area with no home delivery, etc.) justifies an early refill, they can do so as long as they document the reasons in the patient's file and use the appropriate code to override this rule. The claim will then be processed in accordance with the plan specifications. The pharmacist is responsible for prescription drug supply and knows what quantities are required to meet their patients' needs.
Can I ask my pharmacist for an extra supply of drugs so I don't have to keep going back to the pharmacy?
No, we do not recommend stockpiling prescription drugs. Unnecessary stockpiling can create artificial shortages and endanger the health of other patients. The pharmacist can see the big picture, which will help them make the best decision. In addition, most pharmacies have a delivery service. If an insured has to stay at home, their drugs can be delivered to them without their having to leave home.
Why do pharmacists prefer to prescribe 30-day supplies for certain drugs, even when the 30-day restriction has been lifted?
Since Monday, June 15, pharmacists have been able to prescribe drugs the same way they used to before the COVID-19 pandemic, that is, according to the patient’s needs and available supplies. However, many drugs for treating chronic illnesses are still in short supply and the ongoing situation means we still have to be careful, particularly in preparation for a possible second wave of COVID-19 .
What should insureds do if prior authorization for their drug will expire while their doctor is unavailable or if some tests related to their claim can’t be done?
Our insureds’ health, safety and well-being are priorities for us. If they are having trouble getting the required form filled out by their treating physician, they can call us at 1-844-410-6485 This link opens your default phone software. .
Dental insurance
If a dentist charges fees for personal protection equipment (ppe) related to covid-19, are the fees covered under my group insurance plan.
We added this coverage to your plan by default on July 15, 2020 (unless you told us you wanted to opt out of the coverage). It will remain in effect as long PPE charges are included in the provincial dental fee guides. You can still opt out of the coverage—just tell your Desjardins Insurance representative that you do not want it included your plan. However, if you opt out after July 15, some claims may already have been reimbursed.
Only fees charged specifically for personal protection equipment worn by dental care workers will be covered (e.g., masks, face shields, glasses, protective clothing, etc.). Any dental claims submitted after June 1 that included PPE fees and were refused, will be reassessed automatically. PPE charges will only be reimbursable once the province has established set fees for them. We will then reimburse PPE charges based on the dental fee guide applicable to your contract and on the terms outlined in the “Basic Services” sections of your contract and the employee booklet. Any necessary rate adjustments will be made at your next renewal date.
