It is THE must-see monument in Reims , the main attraction of the city, the one that attracts the majority of tourists. And there is a good reason for it!

Built in the 13th century, the Reims cathedral also named “Our Lady of Reims” (or “Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims” in french) is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

Built on the ruins of the ancient cathedral which was ravaged by a fire around 1210, it represents the quintessence of the craftsmen’s know-how of the time.

Bigger than Our Lady of Paris (“Notre-Dame de Paris”), it has housed the coronation of 25 kings of France since its creation and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In total, 33 kings of France were crowned in Reims, in addition to the baptism of Clovis (first king of the Franks). He was baptized in the city’s first cathedral by Saint-Remi.

Things to see during your visit of Our Lady of Reims cathedral:

  • Admire it’s exceptional size: 150m long, 48m wide and 83m high.
  • The Harmonic facade divided into 3 parts , a classic of the Gothic architecture.
  • The 2303 statues , including the famous “Smiling Angel”
  • The impressive 38m high nave
  • The Kings Gallery, 56 statues of more than 4m50, on the west facade of the Cathedral
  • Climb the 249 steps of the North Tower, visit the terrace and the roof to enjoy the panorama (only possible during a guided tour)
  • The Henri Deneux Garden (jardin Henri Deneux), located next to the cathedral and offering an interesting view of the rear part of the building.

Useful information:

  • Timetable: The Reims cathedral is open everyday from 7h30 to 19h30
  • Entrance fee : You can enter the building free of charge. It’s possible to do a guided your for 8€ per person, and I really advise you to do it! The guided visit is free with the Reims City Pass . I will tell you more about it after the Top 15. You can book the Cathedral guided tour here.

You can find more details as well as guided tours timetable on Reims Cathedral official website

Reims cathedral

The palace of Tau , located right next to the Cathedral and also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once the residence of the Archbishops of Reims.

Nowadays, it’s a museum and the Reims Cathedral treasury exhibition place. You will mainly find objects that have been used in the kings coronations, among them:

  • The “Holy Ampulla” (“Sainte Ampoule”), which was used in every single title since Clovis
  • The talisman of Charlemagne
  • The coat worn at the coronation of Charles X
  • The chalice of Saint-Remi

You can also discover tapestries and large statues coming from the cathedral.

Voyage Tips Advice The Palace of Tau is worth a visit if you have the Reims City Pass or if you take a combined ticket with the cathedral guided tour (11€).

Palace of Tau Reims

Built in the 11th century and almost entirely destroyed during the First World War, it is here that you can find the relics of the Archbishop St. Remi (who, as we saw earlier, converted Clovis to Christianity).

A bit smaller than the cathedral, Saint-Remi Basilica of Reims interior is no less impressive. I really loved architecture personally! It’s a little off-centre, but is definitely worth a visit if you enjoy beautiful churches. One of the best points of interest in Reims.

Compared to the cathedral or Palace of Tau, it’s a lesser known tourist attraction, which isn’t a bad thing!

You’re going to Reims?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

The closer you get to your travel dates, the harder it will be to get a good deal. Lots of people will be visiting Reims on the same dates as you , so you can be sure that the best deals are booked extremely quickly!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Reims.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Reims!

Inside the Saint-Remi Basilica of Reims

Next to the basilica, in the former royal Abbey of Saint-Remi , there is the St. Remi museum (“Musée Saint-Remi”).

The building, which is the 3rd listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Reims , is worth a visit if only for its architecture. Must-see: the beautiful cloister and the monumental main staircase.

The museum itself is very interesting too. Through 17 exhibition rooms and a very rich collection of objects, it retraces, the history of the city of Reims from prehistory to the Renaissance period.

At 4 euros per person for about 2 hours of visit, it’s a great visit if you are interested in the history of Reims.

For more details about the timetables and prices, please visit the museum website.

Saint-Remi History Museum

Reims Mars gate (“porte de Mars”) is a Gallo-Roman triumphal arch.

It was the largest of a set of 4 monumental arches which represented the 4 gates of  Durocortorum city (Reims name at that time). It is the only one still – practically – intact today.

With its 30m long and almost 15m high, it is the largest known triumphal arch in the Roman world. Don’t miss it during your trip to Reims.

Do not miss the interior of the arches , which are also richly decorated, including a representation of the mythical she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus (the founders of Rome ) scene.

Mars Gate

If the city of Reims is known all over the world, it is not only for its magnificent cathedral: as you certainly know, it is also an important place of oenotourism.

The 2nd major attraction of the city is undoubtedly the visit of one of the best Champagne Houses.

My favorite part of the visit is certainly the discovery of the chalk caves (named “crayères” in French), where champagne bottles are stocked. Their constant temperature of 10°C  all year round makes them the ideal place to shelter the cellars of champagne.

You will find the complete list of Champagne Houses to visit in Reims and its surroundings by clicking on the button below:

Each winery offers several kinds of tours with tasting . Prices vary according to the vintage or type of wine

Among the great vineyards to see, I particularly recommend (click on the orange link for details and to book your visit):

The hardest thing is to choose! (even if I will help you a little 😉)

The visit that offers the best value for money is the G.H Mumm cellars tour , at only 26 euros per person with Champagne tasting at the end. You need to book it in advance on this website (click here) .

You can also book a more upmarket tour including:

  • A visit to a typical Champagne house with its cellars dug out in the 19th century
  • A tasting lesson with an olfactory workshop
  • 6 champagne and wine tastings
  • Lunch with home-made regional specialities.

This is the best and most complete tour if you are a Champagne lover.

To book it, simply click on the button below:

Visit crayeres Veuve Cliquot champagne

The villa Demoiselle, a true masterpiece mixing Art Deco and Art Nouveau style, was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the owner of Maison Pommery.

Today owned by the Vranken family (owner of the Pommery champagnes), it has been completely renovated to regain its original character and reopened in 2008. It serves as a reception area and can be visited.

The guided tour of the villa takes 1 hour , and the price includes a glass of Demoiselle champagne , the cuvée named after the place.

The villa Demoiselle being private, the visit is not included in the Reims City Pass.

You can only visit with a reservation and you need to book by clicking on the button below:

Villa Demoiselle Reims

If I’m talking about this park on the outskirts of town, it’s simply because it’s close to the Champagne Houses . If you visit the city in summer, you will be happy to take a short break in the shaded walkways of the Parc de Champagne (Champagne Park).

Today the largest public park in the city of Reims, it was once part of the Domaine Pommery.

Next to the villa Demoiselle , in the same neighborhood, you can also go to the the Bute Saint-Nicaise park , another green oasis.

You may not know it, but it is in Reims that one of the 5 largest automotive museums in France is located. This is really a lesser known tourist attraction, but a great place to visit nonetheless!

The Reims Champagne Automobile Museum has a collection of more than 230 vehicles from 1908 to the present day. Motorcycles and cars, from the Marne taxi to the race car, there is something for everyone!

The museum also presents a collection of more than 5,000 miniatures and toys related to the automotive world.

If you’re looking for off the beaten track points of interest in Reims, you should really go to the St. Clotilde de Reims Basicilica. With its Neo-Byzantine architecture, is an atypical monument, really not well known by tourists.

The first thing I thought when I saw the facade was that it would fit perfectly into Gotham City, the city of Batman!

The bad new is that it’s not often open : according to the latest news, only on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm in July and August, so you will probably only be able to admire the outdoors (its the most interesting anyway!).

Reims Sainte-Clotilde basilica

So this is a first! A library is not really the first place that comes to mind when we talk about things to do in a city.

Little known by tourists, this little jewel deserves the detour for its superb Art Deco decoration that makes you fee you’re in the 1920s United States.  The Carnegie library is an unusual place to visit during your escapade in Reims.

Admission is of course free and the visit is fast, but as it is located right next to Reims cathedral, you have no excuse to miss it 😉

Carnegie Library Reims

Under the acient Reims forum and the current “place du Forum de Reims” , you can find one of the 3 galleries that formed the Gallo-Roman cryptoporticus (“Cryptoportique gallo-romain”). In the past used for grain storage, it can now be visited and hosts temporary exhibitions.

Free entrance.

Gallo-Roman cryptoporticus

The Hotel Le Vergeur Museum is located in a mansion built in the 15th century and listed as a historical monument. It was the home of the collector and patron Hugues Krafft at the beginning of the 20th century.

Left untouched since his death in 1935, it’s today a nice museum that you can visit.

Guided tour only.

Hotel Le Vergeur Museum

It was the visit to the Basilica of St. Semi of Reims that decided the Japanese painter Leonardo Foujita to convert to Christianity.

Without a second thought, the man exactly knew what he wanted and decided to design a Romanesque chapel, the Foujita Chapel , entirely. It is notably known for its fresco, and the many details coming from the Japanese tradition.

Price: 4€, free entrance with the Reims City Pass.

Foujita chapel

The Reims Planetarium is an excellent cultural activity to do if you have decided to visit Reims with children.

A museographic space serves as a prelude to the visit, and then you will go to the large dome representing the starry sky

The presenters and lecturers are at very good, it’s for me one of the best planetarium in France.

  • Entrance fee: Free with the Reims City Pass
  • Phone number: 03. 26.35.34.70

Reims Planetarium

  • Museum of the Surrender: A museum about a forgotten part of history. If the date of May 8, 1945 is for everyone the official end of the Second World War, the German surrender was actually signed in Reims on May 7, 1945! If you are interested in history, I recommend a visit to the museum, which is free with the Reims City Pass.
  • Reims Museum of Fine Arts , which although not necessarily the best of its kind, is home to some fine works. Moreover, the visit is free with the Reims City Pass.
  • Place Drouet d’ Erlon , which is more like a small pedestrian street than a square. It’s lined with shops and cafés, which makes it the centre of Reims social life. To see: the Subé fountain.
  • Reims Opera House , located near Notre Dame Cathedral and considered one of the most beautiful opera houses in France. Unfortunately, it is only open on Heritage Day, but you can attend a performance.

Things to do around Reims

There are a lot of things to see in the surroundings of Reims , here is the selection of my favorite places and activities:

The Fort of La Pompelle , built in 1883 to defend Reims, is located 15 minutes by car from the city centre.

This fort was the main part of the Reims sector’s defence during World War I , and it was badly damaged during the conflict. Listed historical monument, it now houses a museum dedicated Reims city defence .You can discover a collection of costumes, helmets, weapons, artillery pieces and historical documents .

Free entrance with the Reims City Pass.

It is a rather unusual building that stands in the middle of the vineyards, less than 20km from Reims: the lighthouse of Verzenay.

Although it was built in 1909 for advertising purposes , it has now been turned into a vineyard museum. It is also possible to climb in the lighthouse, at 25m height, to enjoy the panorama on the surrounding vineyards.

And at the end of the visit, you can enjoy the champagne tasting session!

3 types of admission tickets are available:

  • Museum only
  • Lighthouse only
  • Museum + Lighthouse

If you have the Reims City Pass , you will get a discount on the the museum + lighthouse entrance fee.

Verzenay Lighthouse

Not far from the lighthouse, you can find Verzenay Windmill , situated on a hill overlooking the vineyards. Listed as a historical monument, it can’t be visited inside, but is worth the trip for the view (one of the most beautiful in the region) and the photo moment!

Mumm Verzenay windmill

In the Verzy forest , you will be able to observe a curiosity of nature: The Faux de Verzy , trees with the unlikely form also known as Fau beeches or dward beeches.

With a bout 1000 Faux , this place is home to the largest concentration of Faux de Verzy in the world . You can discover these unique trees through a 3km trail in the forest.

As it’s only at about 30 minutes from Reims, it would be a shame to miss this tourist site when visiting the city!

Free admission.

About 30 minutes south of Reims is the beautiful Abbey of Saint Peter of Hautvillers , whose history is intimately linked to the champagne one.

Today it belongs to the Moët & Chandon house of Champagne and it is in the Saint-Sindulphe church of this abbey that lies the remains of Dom Pérignon and Dom Ruinart, 2 very famous names in the history of champagne.

You can also visit the village of Hautvillers , considered as the cradle of champagne.

Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers abbey

The Reims City Pass is an initiative launched by the Tourist Information Office which allows you to save money when visiting Reims . What you get:

  • Free access to museums and must-see attractions in Reims , all the ones I’m talking about in this guide
  • Guided city tours (historical Reims, Reims by night, Art Deco tour etc.)
  • The Reims City Tour , which is the bus city tour.
  • Free public transport
  • Discounts on visits to Champagne Houses
  • Discounts/gifts in some restaurants.

Available in 1, 2 or 3 days version, for respective prices of 22€, 32€ and 42€. It can be purchased on this website

If you only have one day in Reims and want to visit the must-see attractions of the city and a Champagne house, you will need to plan your itinerary well. Here is how to visit of Reims in express version!

  • Start your day with the visit of Our Lady of Reims catehdral.
  • Then go to the Palace of Tau , located nearby.
  • Eat your lunch in the city centre, for example at Place Drouet d’ Erlon.
  • No time to waste, head towards the Basilica of St. Remi
  • Continue with the Saint-Remi Museum
  • End your day with the visit of the Champagne House of your choice.

It’s rather tough , but 1 day in Reims is really short!

Champagne cellar Reims

In 2 days in Reims , you will have more time to enjoy the city, so it is better to plan a different route for day 1.

Here is an itinerary optimized for this visit in 2 days , to avoid going back and forth unnecessarily. I also recommend that you take a Reims City Pass for two days.

This day’s itinerary is dedicated to the visit of Reims city centre and can be done on foot, as long as you are not allergic to walking! If you have the Pass, you can also choose one or more guided tours.

  • Start with the Foujita Chape l, as it’s a bit outside the city centre.
  • Then visit the Museum of the Surrender
  • Go through the Mars Gate
  • Go down to Place Drouet d’ Erlon via the Promenades Jean-Louis Schneiter (the new name of the “Hautes Promenades”)
  • Have a drink on the square and it’s already lunchtime!
  • Then go take a guided tour of the Hôtel Le Vergeur Museum at 2pm
  • Then head to the forum square , very close to see the Gallo-Roman cryptoporticus
  • Time to go to Reims cathedral for a guided tour
  • Last big visit of the day, the Palace of Tau , but beware, as it closes early in winter. So you may have visit it the next morning.
  • Before dinner, you should go have a look at Carnegie Library , next to the Tau Palace.

For this 2nd day in Reims, as the distances are quite long, you will have to take public transport or your car.

  • If you were unable to do so on the first day, start your day with the Palace of Tau
  • Then, you can go to the Reims Champagne Automobile Museum or the Planetarium
  • Lunch break
  • Start your afternoon with a visit of the Saint-Remi Basilica of Reims and St. Remi Museum
  • The rest of your afternoon will be dedicated to the visit of a Champagne House.
  • You can also take a short trip to the Champagne Park for a quiet moment!

If you want to visit Reims and its region in 2 days, another possibility is to combine the “express” itinerary presented in “Visit Reims in 1 day” with the 3 days itinerary I tell you about just after.

Visit Reims Cathedral

3 days in Reims is the perfect stay duration to enjoy everything the city has to offer. So why not consider a long weekend in the Coronation city? In addition to the previous itinerary, the 3rd day is an opportunity to discover the surroundings of Reims.

Unless you want to make other visits in the city center, the Reims City Pass will be useful only for the first 2 days , no need to take the 3 days version.

  • Start your day with the visit of the Fort de la Pompelle museum
  • Then head south to visit the vineyard museum at the Verzenay lighthouse and take a few photos of the Verzenay mill
  • Lunch break in Verzy or the surrounding area
  • After lunch, head towards the Faux de Verzy for a short walk in the forest
  • End your day with a little thought for Dom Pérignon and Dom Ruinart, at Saint-Pierre d’Hautvillers Abbey

You can also make the itinerary of this 3rd day in the opposite direction, which is smarter if you need to go north for your next destination.

To make the most of your holidays in France, sleeping well is very important! That’s why I have selected for you the best hotels in Reims in each price category.

In order for you to plan your trip easily, I have prepared a tourist map of Reims , with all the must-see attractions I talk about in this article. You can display the map legend by clicking on the top left button, the one with a small arrow.

Terrific article about Reims! It’s getting so hard to find objective information that is not affiliated with guided tours trying to sell you something! We are from the US and have traveled quite a bit in France, but have never visited Reims. Your article completely changed my uninformed impression of the city and now I will put it on our “must visit” list for our next trip. Thank you so much for this well written and very helpful article!

Good afternoon Rob,

To visit Reims and its surroundings, 3 or 4 days is enough (even by public transport). I think one week is a bit too much.

Enjoy your stay in Reims!

Sam Mooney

A 1 day walking guide to Reims, France

Strolling in reims map  |, cathédrale notre-dame de reims ~ palais du tau ~ place royale ~ hôtel de ville ~ halles du boulingrin ~ place drouet d’erlon ~ cours jean-baptiste langlet |, distance: 3km |, time (for us, ie slow): 1 hour |, ascent: 21m (flat and easy) |, found on foot: gothic cathedral | nightly light shows | art deco food market | champagne tasting | parisian boulevards & cafes.

Welcome to Reims! (pronounced, mystifying, like “Rasss”!) A city of wide boulevards, impressive classical and Gothic architecture, and elegant squares lined with cafes. On the Via Francigena route, Reims is actually only forty-five minutes from Paris by train, and we think it has some of that Parisian chic – it just also happens to be the Champagne capital of the world. A perfect size to get to know on foot, we’ve put together a wander around the city, taking in both big sights and hidden streets. So here’s our walk around Reims:

1. Office de Tourisme > Palais du Tau

Start the walk from outside the Office de Tourisme and walk towards the thirteenth century Reims Cathedral . Now you could go in because it’s AMAZING but we’re suggesting you go at the end of this walk instead – explore a little of Reims first!

Reims walk start at Cathedral

What you should do right now is to go into the Palais du Tau , on the right of the cathedral. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the art collections of the Cathedral. It’s here you also get tickets and a place on a tour of the cathedral roof and tower. There are GREAT views of Reims and beyond up there, and tours are the only way to get up. They go at specific times so don’t do what we did and mess this bit up – organise accordingly.

Also: the Cathedral lights up at night throughout summer in a quite spectacular light show . It’s a half-hour whirligig of colour and patterns, which is amazing and slightly weird. And importantly, there’s Champagne-in-a-tent too.

Reims walk night views of Cathedral

2. Palais du Tau > Place Royale

Continue walking round to the right of the Cathedral and Palais du Tau, veering left onto Rue Cardinal de Lorraine, keeping the Palais du Tau on your left.

A sunken garden will appear to your left. Follow the boundary of this garden, turn left onto Cours Anatole France. You get towering views of the other side of the Cathedral called the Gallery of the Kings (loads of kings perched on this side), and it’s much less busy.

Veer away from the garden towards Rue du Grand Credo, and you’ll soon arrive in Place Royale. A nice broad square, the Cathedral still peeps over the top of the elegant façades (mostly important-looking government offices).

3. Place Royale > Halles du Boulingrin

Wander onto Rue Colbert across the other side of the Place. This street takes you directly to the statuesque Hôtel de Ville. You pass through the Place du Forum which has a few of those said beautiful bars and cafes to lounge around in.

Reims walk to the Town Hall

After this, you arrive in Place de l’Hôtel de Ville with the town hall in front of you. Go round to the right of the building and continue on Rue de Mars. This street has loads of eateries, but hang on if you’re walking on a Wednesday or Saturday in the morning as you’re about to stumble across Reims’ food market . It’s in the art deco Halles du Boulingrin (on your right), and sells all sorts of fresh delicious stuff.

Reims walk art deco food hall

4. Halles du Boulingrin > Place Drouet d’Erlon

Return to the corner of the Halles du Boulingrin at which you arrived and continue on the Rue de Mars. At the junction turn left and through the Porte de Mars – the widest arch in the Roman world, no less. Continue straight ahead through the Square of the Porte de Mars. You will see ahead of you a conveniently placed champagne cave – tours and tastes and potentially end of walk available.

Continuing around Reims though: from the Square of the Porte de Mars in the park walk along Allées des 7 et 8 Mai 1945 until you come to a road. Cross it and the tram lines into a shady circular park called Square Colbert – main station on your right. Walk to the far left corner of the park and the Place Drouet d’Erlon presents itself as a pretty, tree-lined avenue.

Reims walk with bars and cafes

The street is bit of a magnet for tourists, with lots of bars and brasseries. It’s great to soak in – our favourite was the stylish Ernest Hemmingway bar on the right as you walk along.

5. Place Drouet d’Erlon > Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims

Turn left when you get to the gold topped fountain (a river representation, apparently) on Place Drouet d’Erlon onto Rue de l’Étape.

Wander down until you reach the wide boulevard of Cours Jean-Baptiste Langlet. It’s covered in green lawn and tram lines, (they ding, don’t worry) and leads to the cathedral on your right. Stroll back towards the the cathedral.

Reims walk trams

You are now back to the cathedral complex with the statue of Joan of Arc tucked away to your right. (She’s here, by the way, because she persuaded Charles VII to have his coronation in Reims in 1429. Told you it’s awesome). Go straight on into the cathedral and stand in awe in its huge Gothic interior. For us, inside is all about the 600 years of stained glass windows, all flooded with colour and light. Oh, and getting up the tower for Reims unfolding before you…

8 Top Champagne Houses in Reims, France

Wine lovers visiting Paris often choose to take a day trip to Reims for Champagne tasting. Getting there via train from Paris is actually very easy and quick. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the bubbles at a few of the top Champagne houses in Reims.

Reims is the center of the Champagne world in France. You can visit world-famous estates in Reims and Epernay , such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger, or check out the smaller Champagne houses you may not have heard of.

veuve clicquot1

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

Champagne region in France

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

  • Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE
  • Reims Afternoon Tour to Epernay – Visit the UNESCO-listed Champagne Avenue in Epernay, the historic village of Hautvillers, and visit two Champagne houses for tastings. (4.5 hours)  BOOK HERE

Private Tour

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

What’s Included:

  • First Visit – Explanation of the manufacturing process plus cave visit followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes.
  • Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.
  • 3-Course Restaurant Lunch
  • 2nd & 3rd Visits – A Grand Cru cellar and cave followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes at each

Tour is 8 hours, 2 people minimum. $375/pp

What’s included:

  • Return transport from Reims in a private shuttle (Mercedes Class V).
  • English-speaking driver/guide, Champagne expert
  • Visit & tasting at 2 Champagne houses
  • Guided tour of Reims Cathedral
  • Lunch reservation (payment not included)

Tour is 7 hours, 2 people minimum $599/pp

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

The House Mumm started in 1827 in the historic birthplace of the Champagne, Reims. This almost bicentenary estate opens the doors of its cellars where about 25 million bottles rest peacefully in the cellars.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

There are three visit types: The Cordon Rouge Mumm experience, the discovery experience, and the 100% Grand Cru experience. The visit will end at one of the most beautiful museum about champagne. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to taste their Champagnes.

#6 Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove has been in business since 1811, and its production is 3 million bottles per year. It can be quite interesting visiting a large house like this to learn the Champagne making process. The facility was built in 2019, so it’s very modern.

You can book a tasting only, or embark on one of their three tours, which takes you to their production facility and give you an explanation of the process, along with a demonstration in their eco-museum.

The tour will be followed by a comparative tasting of 3 non-vintage Champagnes (2 whites and 1 rosé) or you can add on a vintage tasting as well.

#7 Champagne Pol Couronne

Champagne Pol Couronne was started in 2015. This family-owned champagne house, located in the historic city of Reims, offers a private tour and tasting in their showroom, so you can get an intimate look into the meticulous craft of champagne-making.

#8 Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot Champagne

Location: 1 Place des Droits de l’Homme, 51100 Reims, France Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm Phone:  +33 (0)3 26 89 53 90 Email: [email protected]

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

  • Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.
  • On the Footsteps of Madame Clicquot – 53€:  1 hr tour where you’ll learn all about Madame Clicquot, followed by a tasting of the Brut Yellow Label and prestige Cuvée La Grande Dame.
  • Veuve Clicquot & Rose Champagne – 40€: In 1818, Madame Clicquot was the first to make a rose champagne blend, which changed the landscape of Champagne for ever. Learn all about the Rose on this 45 min tour, followed by a tasting.

Other Champagne Houses Nearby

Not too far away from Reims, there are many more opportunities for Champagne tasting. If you’re going to be in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by a few of these:

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

Descending into the Veuve Clicquot Chalk Caves

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

  • Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
  • Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
  • Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

⇒ Be sure to check out our list of the drinks you should try in France . There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the Champagne.

Thank you so much for this perfect trip plan! Sooooo helpful 🙂

Glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

We’re planning an overnight in Reims next month – do you have any favorite places for dinner?

We really enjoyed L’Atelier and L’Alambic, which has a fun environment.

Are children (age 13) allowed on these tours? Thanks so much for the article! Very helpful.

Yes, they are allowed.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Great information, thank you for your detail! I’m planning a visit, but having trouble locating information for a tour at Laurent Perrier. Do you happen to know if they do tours?!

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

As the centre of the Champagne region, Reims is the best place to taste premium French bubbles. But which are the best Champagne houses to visit in Reims?

E-Bike Champagne Tasting Tour

How to Go Champagne Tasting in Reims

The labyrinth of 200 km of caves, or crayères, beneath Reims, provides the perfect environment for the second fermentation of Champagne. In 2015, UNESCO placed the crayères of Reims on the World Heritage list .

Each of the city’s Champagne houses has a slice of this prime underground real estate. These range from behemoths like Veuve Clicquot to smaller boutique houses, and each has its distinct personality.

You have three options for touring the Champagne houses of Reims: self-guided, a guided tour or a private tour.

Self-guided

As I wanted to pick which Champagne houses to visit, I went down the DIY route.

Although this takes a little planning, it is easy to do. As you can walk between the houses, you don’t have to worry about driving or figuring out transport options.

You will need to pre-book most of these tours, which you can do directly with the Champagne house or via Rue des Vignerons .

Guided tour

Joining an organised Champagne tour may be for you if you want to visit Moet & Chandon in Épernay or combine more than one Champagne house in a time-efficient way. It is also useful if you wish to visit one of the small wineries in the region.

All of the arrangements are taken care of and it’s also a fabulous way to meet other travellers if you are on a solo trip.

Private tour

If you want to let someone else take over the reins but want a more curated experience that is not shared with strangers, book a private tour. This is the most expensive option but may be cost-effective if you are travelling with a few other people.

Best Champagne Houses to Visit in Reims (+ Map)

I visited these Champagne houses independently.

Four of the houses are located in the Saint Remi area of Reims , a 30-minute walk from the city centre. The houses are within a 5– 10-minute walk of each other.

If you don’t fancy walking, jump in a taxi or use Uber. I recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, making your way back to the city centre from there.

Taittinger is in the centre of Reims.

If you like to map it out, here’s one that I have prepared. For an interactive map, click here or on the image itself.

1. Champagne Pommery: Reims’ Champagne Disneyland

exterior of neo tudor blue building belonging to pommery champagne house of reims france

Pommery is not your typical Reims Champagne tour.

Its vast caves are not only used for storing fermenting Champagne bottles. They are also spaces for sound and light installations . What you lose in information about the intricacies of Champagne production, you gain in a multisensory experience.

Select the self-guided tour – the first of its kind in Reims – and you can rock up at any time during the cellars’ opening hours. This makes it super easy to shoehorn Pommery into your day of Champagne tasting in Reims.

Unlike other Champagne houses in Reims, there’s no need to book a ticket in advance. There are ticket machines in the lobby.

Download the audioguide by scanning the QR code at the information desk. An excellent printed guide is also provided.

Cellar tours at Pommery

  • Brut Royal Visit – Self-guided or guided visits of cellars. One tasting (Pommery Brut Royal)
  • From the vine to the glass – A more in-depth guided tour. One tasting (Pommery Grand Cru Royal vintage)
  • Henry Vasnier – Includes a guided or self-guided cellar tour and a visit to Villa Demoiselle. Two tastings (Pommery Brut Apanage + Diamant Brut or Pommery Brut Royal + Demoiselle Tête de Cuvée)

I recommend the Henry Vasnier tour that I did.

Villa Desmoiselle is a gem of an Art Nouveau building, commissioned by Henry Vasnier, then director of Maison Pommery, in 1906. Sipping your Champagne in the villa’s gorgeous garden after your tour is a bonus.

The Demoiselle Tête de Cuvée was also my favourite Champagne in Reims.

Address : Place General Gouraud, 51100, Reims, France

2. Taittinger: The elegant one

gateway to taittinger champagne house

When I visited Reims, the hugely informative Taittinger cellar tour was the best of the bunch. Sadly, as their main location at Place Saint Nicaiseis is currently closed, cellar tours are not available at the time of updating this post (October 2023).

As an alternative, they offer tasting experiences at Demeure des Comtes de Champagne in the centre of Reims.

Taittinger tasting experiences

  • At the table de Thibaud IV – Two tastings (Brut Réserve + Comtes de Champagne Blanc) + 25-minute audio show
  • Champagne tastings – Two tastings. Choose between L’Instant Rosé ( Brut Réserve and + Prestige Rosé) and L’ Instant Gourmet (Prélude Grands Cru +  Brut Vintage)

Address: 20 rue de Tambour, 51100 Reims, France

3. Ruinart: The Grand Old Dame of Reims Champagne houses

modern sculpture of a man

Established in 1729, Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house in Reims .

This cellar tour began and ended with the group sitting around a circular table, laid with glasses and bottles of water. It felt like going into a board meeting.

However, this was by far the most social Champagne tour, and an excellent choice if you are feeling the pangs of solo travel loneliness . Furthermore, Ingrid, our outstanding guide, asked each person a few questions by way of an icebreaker.

It was here that we learnt about the rich history of Ruinart before descending into the cellars. The whole experience lasted two hours and included tastings of vintage and non-vintage Champagne.

Although this was the most expensive of the Champagne cellar tours in Reims, it was one of the best.

Cellar tours at Ruinart

Ruinart keeps it simple and offers just one tour, which includes two tastings.

4. Veuve Clicquot: It’s all about the Widow Clicquot (and the colour yellow)

wall display of bottles of veuve clicquot champagne

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot has 24 km of crayères, the most extensive cave network in Reims and the second largest in the Champagne region. These caves double as a museum space and host an unusual installation.

The three grape varieties used in the house’s signature Yellow Label Champagne – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier – are projected onto the cave’s wall. At the same time, a hidden machine pumps out the odour of the grape, with the aroma of the Yellow Label as the grand finale.

It’s like a slightly peculiar scratch-and-sniff experience.

Although this was a slick and professional operation – iPad support in different languages was available if needed – I found it the least compelling of the Reims Champagne tours. The focus was more on the family and the formidable Mme Clicquot than on the fizzy stuff.

The cellar tour concluded with a tasting of the Yellow Label Champagne.

Cellar tours at Veuve Clicquot

  • Brut Yellow Label – cellar tour and one tasting (Yellow Label)
  • Art of Blended Rosé Champagne – cellar tour and two tastings (Yellow Label and Rosé Non-Vintage) + charcuterie and cheese slate.
  • Only One Quality, The Finest – cellar tour and four tastings (Brut Carte Jaune, Extra Brut Extra Old, Vintage 2015 and Vintage Rosé 2015)
  • The Art of Aging – cellar tour and tastings of four vintages (Vintage Brut 2015, Vintage Brut Rosé 2015, Vintage Brut 2002 in Magnum, Cave Privée 1990) + slate of refined cheeses

Address: 1 Rue Albert Thomas, 51100 Reims, France

5. G.H. Martel: The Boutique Champagne House Experience

courtyard and building of g h martel champagne house in reims france

In the shadow of Saint Remi Basilica is one of the smaller Champagne houses in Reims . Founded in 1869, G. H. Martel is one of the younger kids on the block.

Its cool cellars also double as a museum, displaying typical Champenois tools and machinery, used for planting, maintaining the land and harvesting. The informative cellar tour lasts 60 minutes and ends with three tastings.

Cellar tours at G. H. Martel

  • Initiation – Cellar tour and 3 tastings
  • 150 years – Cellar tour and 3 tastings (2x non-vintage and 1x vintage)
  • Prestige – Cellar tour and 3 tastings (3x prestige Champagnes)

Address: 17 rue des Clenches, 51100 Reims, France

Other Cellar Tours

These are not the only cellar tours that you can do in Reims. Here are a few more to consider but they are not located in the Saint Remi area of the city.

Charles de Cazanove is a five-minute walk from Reims train station.

G.H. Mumm is a ten-minute walk northeast of Charles Cazenove and offers a number of experiences.

Finally, Lanson is southwest of the city centre

Best Champagne Tours in Reims

Here are a few tours that are highly-rated:

Champagne Day Trip with 6 Tastings

This one is for you if you want to squeeze as many tastings as possible into the day. I like that it includes two glasses of Pommery Champagne at the end of the tour.

E-Bike Champagne Tasting Tour and Lunch

This tour does it all. Cycling through Champagne avenues in Épernay and the village of Hautvillers. Visiting two Champagne producers including a family-run winery. And there’s also lunch and six tastings throughout the day.

Day Trip to Épernay and Hautvillers from Paris

If you want to visit the Champagne houses from Paris and simply want someone to take care of the arrangements for you, this tour should tick a lot of the boxes. Over the course of the day, you will taste eight different types of fizz in three Champagne houses. Lunch and a masterclass in the heart of the vineyard are also included.

Reims and Champagne tasting from Paris

This ten-hour tour includes up to six tastings, lunch and a visit to Reims Cathedral.

Tips for Champagne Tasting in Reims

  • When planning your DIY cellar tour, consider how long you will need to spend in each house and the time needed to move between cellars. Also, factor in time for your tasting. You don’t want to have to knock back the bubbly.
  • Although there is a restaurant opposite Saint Remi Basilica, there are no other places to eat or buy food near the Champagne houses. The one exception is the pricey restaurant at Pommery. Pick up supplies before you head out for the day.
  • Dress appropriately. As the cellars are at a constant 12 degrees year-round, bring layers even if it is blazing hot outside. Comfortable shoes are a given.

How to Visit Reims as a Day Trip from Paris

It is very easy to get from Paris to Reims.

The non-stop TGV from Gare de L’Est reaches Reims in 45 minutes. Slower trains are also available.

Some people I talked to had also visited Épernay , another major centre of Champagne production. There are swift and easy connections between the two cities.

You can check train times and costs here .

It is even possible to visit Reims as a day trip from London . Eurostar trains arrive at Gare du Nord, less than ten minutes walk from Gare de L’Est.

Where to Stay in Reims

I stayed overnight as part of a solo holiday in France . This not only gave me a chance to visit the UNESCO-listed Reims Cathedral but the city itself is a pleasant place to spend a relaxing few days.

Mid-range – Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix

I stayed at this 4-star hotel in the heart of the city. Recommended for its comfortable rooms, extensive breakfast buffet and indoor swimming pool and sun terrace.

Here are a few other places to stay that may suit other budgets and tastes

Splurge – Domaine les Crayères

This gorgeous property is the perfect excuse to blow the holiday budget. It is in the heart of Champagne house territory, just 350 meters from Pommery.

Budget – Le Sacré, Au pied de la cathédrale

This centrally-located apartment has two bedrooms and is equipped with a washing machine.

>>> None of these takes your fancy? Check other accommodation options in Reims here .

My Favourite Champagne Houses in Reims

It was a close call but Ruinart was my favourite cellar tour. It wasn’t cheap, but the guide demonstrated a real passion for her subject and it was a welcoming and sociable environment.

Pommery was stimulating and fun and also gave me the opportunity to visit the wonderful Villa Desmoiselle. As you don’t need to book ahead, it is also a very flexible option.

But whichever Reims’ cellar tours you select, you will come away knowing a lot more about Champagne production and your preferred type of fizz. I’ll raise my glass to that.

An intimate exploration in Reims, 18 metres underground

All year round, Taittinger's interpreter-guides welcome visitors from all over the world to introduce them to the art of champagne-making by going back in time. From the remains of Saint-Nicaise Abbey, dating from the 13th century, to the depths of the magnificent Gallo-Roman chalk pits 18 metres underground, which form part of the Coteaux, Houses and Cellars of Champagne inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Discover more about the history of Taittinger champagne cellars

In the 4th century, the chalk pits were patiently dug out to extract blocks of chalk. 900 years later they would become the basement of Saint-Nicaise Abbey. They were then extended by a network of tunnels linking cellars, crypts and vaults used for storing the champagne wines sold by the Benedictine monks. The Abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, but its underground structures remained intact. Owned by Maison Taittinger and used for coaxing the very best out of its most precious wines 18 metres underground, the site welcomes numerous visitors year round, who come to marvel at these stunning remnants of the Gothic style in the champagne region.
