35 Thousand

Despite all the (obvious) positives, traveling can wreak havoc on your skin. Among the culprits: new climates, indulgent food and drinks , fatigue, drying plane cabin air, and more. For this reason, you’ll want to pack a skincare regimen that counteracts these stressors as well as targets your unique everyday needs regardless of the location.

To help you choose the best travel kit for your next adventure , we researched and rounded up selections that address a variety of circumstances and skin concerns, and fall under the TSA 3-1-1 guidelines . Our overall favorite, Fenty Skin’s The Glow Around 4-piece Travel Skincare Essentials Set, stands out for its consolidated product lineup with multifunctional items, a reasonable price point, and the versatility to be used on nearly any type of skin. But, if you want to target specific concerns or environmental stressors, read on. We’ve culled the best items for a multitude of scenarios.

These are the best travel skincare sets to shop:

Best Overall

Fenty skin the glow around 4-piece travel skincare essentials set.

Multiple products in this vegan kit do double duty, and SPF is included.

If you prefer an even more minimalistic travel skin routine, shop the brand’s three-piece set instead.

We’ve long been traveling with Fenty Beauty products in tow, and this skincare assembly — featuring standouts from Rihanna’s Fenty Skin line — is our number one pick. The vegan set, suited for normal, dry, combination, and oily skin types, includes four miniature skincare products: an antioxidant-packed cleanser, a toner-serum hybrid, a moisturizer with sun protection, and an AHA exfoliator with a reusable applicator. It has just a little more than the bare necessities to help combat travel-induced skin stress, but it’s not excessive either; it’ll all easily fit inside a clear quart-sized bag, and won’t break the bank.

We especially love that multiple products in the kit do double duty. The 1.5-ounce Total Cleans’r face wash easily wipes away dirt, oil, and makeup, eliminating the need to pack a separate makeup-removing product. The lightweight 1-ounce Hydra Vizor moisturizer contains SPF 30 and also works well as a primer. Furthermore, the moisturizer’s pump-style container is extra sanitary for travel (so you’re not transferring any germs from your fingers into a product tub). For those who prefer a more minimal routine, the brand also offers a three-piece version of the travel kit (sans exfoliator), which comes with a trial-sized body cream.

Best Overall, Runner-up

35thousand all the radiance set.

Four full-sized products (1.7 ounces each) including an SPF 30 serum and bamboo washcloth come in a clear zip case.

It’s on the more expensive side for the size.

If you’ve never heard of 35thousand, it’s a skincare line that was made for travel — literally. All of the brand’s products are travel-friendly in terms of size, containers, and the skin concerns they address. The set is more of a splurge, but that’s because each product in this vegan kit was carefully designed to function in place of multiple other products. For example, the makeup-removing cleansing balm can double as a hydration mask when left on skin for 10-20 minutes. Or, try the refreshing and toning mist in place of water (along with the cleanser) if you don’t have access to a sink.

We love that the day serum includes SPF 30 and a subtle tint hint for added glow while on the move, and the hyaluronic acid-rich cream delivers much needed hydration. The best part? The items come housed in a clear zip case (with room for a few more products) and there’s a mini bamboo washcloth which comes in a smaller zip case to keep it separate from the rest of your stash.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Ren clean skincare evercalm skin zen trio.

Natural ingredients like plant oils can help soothe delicate skin.

You may want to consult your dermatologist first if your skin is highly sensitive.

If your skin tends to be fickle, you may want to follow a less-is-more approach to your routine. Enter this three-piece system, which includes only the essentials. The ultra-gentle cleansing milk is the perfect wash for delicate skin, and the kit follows that with a calming cream for daytime and a recovery balm with an intensely nourishing barrier for bedtime. Even if you don’t generally have sensitive skin, travel conditions (such as plane cabins, new climates, and bedsheet fabrics you’re not used to) can cause your skin to flare up on vacation, and these soothing products featuring sea buckthorn berry, jojoba, and sunflower seed oils can be a welcome relief.

Best for Combination Skin

Caudalie vinoperfect brightening solution set.

The oil-free gel moisturizer is great for warmer climates.

If you prefer a more matte finish, you might not love the pearlescent moisturizer.

Designed to target uneven skin texture, this three-piece set includes a gentle glycolic essence (which the brand recommends applying with a cotton round after cleansing), a dark spot serum (to be used on face, neck, and décolleté), and a brightening moisturizer (to be slathered on morning and night, after serum application). The oil-free moisturizer has a lightweight gel texture, which makes it a great companion for trips to warmer climates. It also has pearlescent minerals which deliver an immediate visible glow to skin.

Best for Oily Skin

Priori the clear skin now kit.

This no-fuss routine is aimed at clearing and soothing blemish-prone skin.

To avoid possible irritation, start slow with the gel perfector only.

If your skin tends to break out under stress, you’ll need targeted products to combat the effects of a change in daily routine. This small-but-mighty set includes a two-week supply of skincare essentials designed to offer blemish control and clear oily skin. The first step is a calming lactic acid cleanser, which is still tough enough to remove eye makeup. Next comes a salicylic acid gel perfector aimed at balancing oily skin that can lead to breakouts, and that doubles as a mattifying primer. (The brand recommends starting usage at a few times a week to see how your skin reacts and before bumping up to daily application.) Finally, there’s an oil-free, silky-smooth replenishing moisturizer, which can also be used post sunburn to soothe skin.

Best for Dry Skin

Biossance miracle moisture set.

Four squalene-packed products work in tandem to help target parched skin.

The set does not include a cleanser or a product with SPF.

Plane cabins are practically synonymous with dry skin. That’s because an aircraft’s filtration system — which takes in outside air and circulates it in the cabin — causes humidity to drop well below what is comfortable for most people. Each of the four steps in this routine (a soothing eye cream, a plumping serum, a rich moisturizer, and a finishing Vitamin C oil) contain squalane , an ingredient said to have powerful hydrating properties. Not only is the kit a good fit for anyone with naturally drier skin or who may be experiencing abnormal dryness due to time of year or destination climates, but it can be great to boost lost moisture due to the flight alone. We love that this set includes a really creamy eye product, since delicate eye-area skin might need a little extra love after an aptly monikered red-eye flight .

Best for Normal Skin

Olehenriksen find your glow brightening skincare set.

Packed with vitamin C, these products can help brighten dull, travel-stressed skin.

This set does not include SPF, and you’ll want to layer some of top of any areas where PHAs were applied.

If your skin isn’t fussy, you can focus your routine on products that target long-term skin concerns. Olehenriksen’s four-piece set is anchored by the hero ingredient Vitamin C , which can treat photoaging and hyperpigmentation. An orange fruit water-based daily cleanser, a Vitamin C serum, a nourishing gel cream, and a color-correcting eye cream are designed to help improve luminosity, which can certainly suffer when we put our skin through the stress of traveling. The weightless-feeling gel is cool to the touch, making this set ideal for warmer-weather locations — but don’t forget to pack SPF for vital sun protection, which is not included in this kit.

Best for Lips

Fresh sugar collection lip care set.

These tiny lip balms deliver moisture and a variety of subtle colors.

Depending on the length of your trip, you may not need five different options.

We’ve talked a lot about skin dryness due to travel, but don’t neglect your parched pout. Fresh’s cult-favorite Sugar lip products are famous for delivering moisture along with subtle, buildable color. They’ll do double duty on your next trip by replenishing chapped lips and potentially replacing any lipsticks you might have considered packing.

This five-piece set includes mini versions of the brand’s best-selling colorless Advanced Therapy lip treatment (a must-have to combat drying plane cabin air), refreshing and softening Mint Rush, and three buildable tinted balms. The color balms — in rosé (a rosy pink), honey (a warm terracotta), and petal (a nude blush) — deliver a subtle tint with one swipe and a deeper shade when layered. If you don’t feel like carrying five lip products, the brand also makes a three-piece set .

Best for Eyes

Charlotte tilbury recovery skin set.

A cult-favorite cream is coupled with two soothing, hydrating serums.

This set is best suited for normal and dry skin types and does not include any cleansing products or SPF.

Jet lag, lack of sleep on red-eye flights, and more can all add up to dryness and redness around the eye area while jet setting. Charlotte Tilbury’s Recovery Skin Set is designed to restore hydration and plumpness with its trio of soothing products. Included is a half-ounce container of the celebrity-loved brand ’s cult-favorite hyaluronic acid-based Magic Cream, a mini serving of a lightweight Vitamin C serum, and a depuffing eye serum containing caffeine. We especially love the eye serum because it has a metal applicator tip which delivers a cooling sensation to your eye area when applied.

Best for In-flight Use

Shielded beauty self defense system set.

We keep these moisturizing minis close while in the air to replenish skin mid-flight.

You’ll need to pack other skincare items for a full routine as this set only has a hydrating mist, facial moisturizer, and hand and body lotion.

Plane cabins are notoriously harsh on skin and just a couple of hours in the air can leave your epidermis feeling parched. Whenever we fly, we love to keep a teeny bottle of hydrating mist — such as the soothing and energizing spritz in this three-piece kit — handy for a little mid-flight refresh. You can even apply it over makeup. Equally essential: the hand and body lotion which can aid any exposed body skin pre-, mid-, and post-flight and the nourishing facial moisturizer. Designed to protect skin against environmental elements, this set is also ideal for packing for new climates that your skin isn’t accustomed to.

Best for Warmer Climates

Image skincare ready, set, discover set.

A minimalistic skincare routine means more time for soaking in your trip .

If you prefer a more radiant finish on your beauty products, the mattifying moisturizer might not be your favorite.

When outdoor activities are on the itinerary, sun protection should be at the top of your packing list (yes, even in colder locations). With ingredients designed to hydrate and brighten — plus SPF — Image Skincare’s three-item set is a great low-fuss find for beach or warm-weather vacations. It starts with a mild cleanser, which is followed by a hydrating and brightening hyaluronic acid- and Vitamin C-packed serum. The last step, a mattifying moisturizer, offers SPF 30 sun protection. A bonus: The products come in a reusable TSA-friendly clear zip case that gives you one less thing to think about while packing for your next adventure.

Best for Colder Climates

Glossier the skincare edit.

The kit comes with two of Glossier’s cult-favorite lip balm minis.

None of the included products have any SPF.

Cold, dry air can quickly lead to skin dryness and redness as well as chapped lips. If you’re traveling to a climate that’s chillier than you’re used to, Glossier’s Skincare Edit set could be a great companion. It includes mini versions of the brand’s makeup-removing Milky Jelly Cleanser, the hydrating Super Bounce Serum (which they recommend pressing 3-4 drops gently into skin after cleansing), a shea- and murumuru-butter-rich moisturizer (which doubles as a primer), and Futuredew (an oil-serum hybrid that should be applied as the last step in your skincare routine, after sunscreen). We love that this kit also gives you two Balm Dotcom lip balms (one non-tinted and one barely-there pink), which will certainly come in handy if your lips dry out when temperatures drop. A bonus: it includes a nylon-spandex headband that's ideal for washing your face, and everything comes in a molded, recyclable paper case.

Tips for Buying Travel-sized Skincare Kits

Prioritize portability.

When traveling, especially via plane, you’ll want your skincare regimen to follow certain guidelines. First, anything going in your carry-on should adhere to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule (all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and should all fit into a single, clear quart-sized bag). You’ll also want to minimize the number of products you’re hauling as much as possible, per the quart-sized bag.

Consider your usual skin concerns and the climate at your destination

You’ll also want to think about the specific stressors your skin will be exposed to on your trip and stock up on products that can help combat those: Will you be spending ample time in the sun? Are you entering drying, cold weather? Will you be wearing more makeup than usual? These are all things to take into consideration when shopping for products to pack for your next vacation.

The best travel beauty kits to sling in your hand luggage

By Anita Bhagwandas

The best travel beauty kits to shop before your next trip

This is a slightly traumatic memory to relive, but regale it I shall for last-minute packers everywhere. I was headed to the airport for a work trip and realised I hadn’t packed any perfume, so I slung my beloved Coromandel Les Exclusifs De Chanel fragrance into my handbag. It looked around 100ml I thought (very wrong), and even if it weren’t, surely they’d let me through with it anyway; it’s just perfume, right? (wrong again.) Cut to several hours later at the airport security gates and as my colleagues watched in horror when a security guard held up my Chanel, shook his head and said, “ This is DOUBLE the amount you’re allowed. It’s a no.”

I know this was a real rookie error; the 100ml rule has been in place since 2006, but my stomach lurched at the thought of losing the scent I’d been given for my birthday just a few weeks before. I started welling up a bit, but thankfully a sense of humanity intervened and I was excused with my Chanel – and a stern warning. It was a lesson I heeded, and since then, I’ve always double-checked before I’ve packed a beloved product.

Chances are, you’ve been there too – we all have. So to take the hassle out of last-minute trips, size checking and decanting, these are my favourite beauty travel kits that you can simply grab before you fly. Even when the 100ml rule is eventually scrapped, these are still super useful for all your travel adventures as a space saver and a chance to try new products without committing to the full-size ones.

However, wasted travel minis are an environmental issue. If you have any you don’t like or know you won't use; you can donate used and unused products to those who need them via the Toiletries Amnesty .

The best skincare travel kits

Sunday Riley’s well-deserved cult following comes from her science-backed products and fast-acting botanicals. The Ceramic Clip Cleanser is ideal for dissolving pollution and soothing skin, while the retinoid serum, eye cream, and sleep oil ensure your skin looks refreshed upon waking (even if a child has kicked the back of your seat for the entire journey.) It’s the ultimate night-time routine in a handy box.

If you want skincare that really delivers, meet Spanish brand Natura Biseé. This rich skincare kit is perfect for anyone with dry or mature skin or perhaps headed to the cooler climes and pistes. It houses seven of their skincare best-sellers, including the Diamond Extreme Cream and Eye Cream – plus, for a limited time, 100% of the proceeds benefit The Ricardo Fisas Natura Bissé Foundation, which offers education for aestheticians and skincare guidance for people undergoing oncology treatments.

You know when you arrive at your hotel looking like you’ve been through it, with a slightly haunted look in your eyes? This grab-and-go kit from Aesop can fix that. It contains a useful shampoo and conditioner, but the body cleanser with uplifting geranium and body balm infused with energising rind are great to soothe dry skin and put the spring back in your step.

eye cream travel kit

If you’re looking for ultra-chic minis that work as well as they look, pick up this skincare kit from Soho Skin. It includes a cleanser, mask, moisturiser, eye cream, lip balm, serum and shave gel; everything you’d both need and want for your travels. The line is super gender-neutral, so it’s perfect for sharing when you travel or gifting to the holiday-lovers in your life.

Is your skin reactive when you travel? I feel your pain. Try this MANTLE mini kit, housing a selection from their CBD-infused calming skincare line. I’m a big fan of their creamy Magic Milk cleanser, which aims to balance your microbiome and gently clear dead skin cells with fruit enzymes, whilst their rich moisturising cream, mist, and body exfoliator complete this must-have skin and body care kit.

If you’re jet-setting soon, then spend some time at the Duty-Free counter. There are often incredible Duty Free-only purchases, including this Esteé Lauder travel set that contains a smaller size of their award-winning Advanced Night Repair and a full-size Advanced Night Repair Eye Gel-Creme. If flying takes its toll on your skin, slather these on, get an eye mask ready and prepare to wake up with fresh-looking, rested skin.

eye cream travel kit

If you’re already a fan of beauty journalist Sali Hughes’ uncomplicated skincare range, you’ll love this mini set. It comes in a handy 100% cotton bag containing a mini cleanser, exfoliant, serum and moisturiser in 10ml sizes that are ideal for weekends away and gym bags alike. They’re so small they’ll fit into the tiniest hand luggage and are perfect for keeping to decant from the full-sized products.

eye cream travel kit

The Best Eye Creams for Jet-Lagged Travelers

The 16 Best Eye Creams for JetLagged Travelers

Planes are one of the worst places to catch some zzz's —the seats are uncomfortable and there's always someone whose overhead light is on. Next time you find yourself on a long flight, fake a well-rested complexion by dabbing on some eye cream. Since the skin around the eye is extremely thin, it's the first place to show signs of stress and fatigue, like puffiness brought on by cabin pressure or dark circles from lack of sleep. While an ice cube can work in a pinch, Dopp kit -friendlier solutions abound. After sifting through our own toiletry bags , we asked beauty experts and avid travelers alike to share the best eye creams, gels, serums, and more that keep them looking bright-eyed after a long-haul flight .

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Mara Balagtas.

This luxurious eye cream was the most raved about product in our informal survey. David Gu, founder of mirror retailer Neutypechic , spends an unfathomable amount of time on planes; hollowed-out eyes are the tell-tale giveaway. That’s why he is a Tata Harper loyalist. “This eye cream helps to reduce puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines,” Gu says. “It also contains antioxidant-rich ingredients that help to protect against free radical damage and prevent future wrinkles.” The compact size makes it ideal for packing light, and the balm is thick enough that he never worries about spillage.

Raccoon eyes don’t stand a chance against this airy-light serum from Charlotte Tilbury. The vegan formula incorporates cooling aloe vera, buttery shea oil, and caffeine for a speedy pick-me-up. It’s the serum’s more unusual ingredients (amethyst, moonstone powders, and Swiss ice wine essence), however, that really give it an edge, lighting up a dog-tired face after the cruelest of red-eyes.

Not only is this 15-ml wand TSA-approved, the soothing gel glides on seamlessly with the help of a smartly curved applicator. Neuropeptides in this slick, plant-based serum help conceal fine lines and wrinkles, while sodium acetylated hyaluronate moisturizes dry skin—a blessing during tarmac delays.

Cindy Ngo, founder of Ink + Porcelain design studio in Oakland, California, sings the praises of this cultishly revered, deeply moisturizing cream, calling it her “holy grail.” “I always have it in my bag for a quick fix and know that it'll liven up my look,” Ngo says. She also likes that the formula, which contains hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, is clean and vegan.

Jessie Moore, the U.K.–based photographer and travel writer behind Pocket Wanderings , has road tested numerous eye creams over the years. Origins’ Ginzing is the only one she’s found that “genuinely brightens” the panda rings under her eyes. The cream is formulated with Vitamin C, ginseng, and a pop of caffeine—a combination fashion blogger Kiki Baltzi also credits for getting her through “zero sleep” fashion weeks. “This eye cream helps me fight puffiness,” says Baltzi, who applies it twice a day with a pink quartz roller that she keeps in the fridge. “It makes me look like I slept 10 hours.”

This calming jelly, dispensed via a stainless steel roller ball, is the next best thing to glazing your face with Greek yogurt. The probiotics help reduce inflammation, Greek espresso acts as a stimulating antioxidant, and honeysuckle and jasmine give the gel a pleasant floral scent. Plus, the 15-ml vial is the perfect size to toss in your carry-on.

Travel consultant Katrina Warren has been using this serum for four years because “it’s small enough to fit in any travel kit and lighter than a cream.” The latter, she notes, is particularly important to her as a woman of color who has struggled with a white cast from other creams. The Vitamin C in BioLumin-C also helps Warren’s skin snap back to life after an exhausting flight.

Jessie Kuo, co-founder of Los Angeles–based matcha retailer Nekohama , travels frequently for work and swears by Amorepacific’s Time Response eye cream, a green tea-powered cream that works wonders to counter dullness. She has been using it for four years to “brighten and moisturize” around her eyes after cross-country flights, patting it on before she boards and after she deplanes. The result: “You can’t tell that I’ve barely slept!” Kuo says.

“I’ve been on more horrendous 10-plus-hour flights than I care to count,” says Alex Gillard, wildlife photographer and the founder of Nomad Nature Travel . “I’m also six-foot-two, so there is zero chance that I get even a single second of sleep in an economy class seat.” A flight attendant friend recommended Ole Henriksen’s collagen-infused Banana Bright eye cream to him a few years ago and he’s been slathering it on every flight since. “The difference is really striking,” says Gillard. “It hydrates the skin under my eyes so it doesn't look so sallow, and it contains banana pigment, which brightens the skin.”

eye cream travel kit

New York–based beauty and style expert Katya Bychkova deploys a double whammy for long-haul flights, starting with Dermalogica’s Awaken Peptide Eye Gel . “It contains caffeine, a known anti-inflammatory and de-puffing ingredient,” Bychkova says. She chases that with Lancôme’s Advanced Génifique wrinkle and dark circle eye cream, a formula punched up with Vitamin C and nourishing hyaluronic acid. “It quenches my dehydrated skin while I’m up in the air and visibly reduces the appearance of dark circles,” she says.

Gold has been used to lift, firm, and brighten faces for millennia; even Cleopatra incorporated the precious metal into her beauty routine. These gilded eye patches from Peter Thomas Roth are super chic, but they’re also comfortable enough to wear in-flight, says Amy Siegal, a travel advisor at Valerie Wilson Travel . Siegal wears the luxe patches both on the plane and after she lands to combat dryness and puffiness. She likes them so much, in fact, she gifts them to clients before their own big trips.

eye cream travel kit

Vancouver –based content creator Kathryn Anderson travels often for work and says this combo kit keeps the zombie look at bay. “The powerful duo actually does what it says it does,” says Anderson of Chanel’s renewing roll-on serum and hydrogel eye patches. “The results are nothing short of incredible.” Whether she’s on a long-haul flight or a short evening jaunt, she slaps on the eye patches one hour before landing. “I don’t even need to wash my face or redo my makeup,” says Anderson. “Once the patches come off, I powder my face, apply a fresh coat of mascara, and voilà! I look refreshed and ready to take on the world.”

eye cream travel kit

No matter how light you typically travel, you’ll want to make room for the ultra-hydrating Probiotics + Triple Peptide refreshing eye cream and rose quartz eye massager from Glowasis. The easy-to-grip massage tool rolls easily around the eye, boosting circulation and increasing absorption of the satiny, niacinamide-laced eye cream.

eye cream travel kit

Acmella Oleracea, a natural alternative to Botox, is a star ingredient in this silky, rose-scented eye cream, but it’s the radiant diamond powder that gives it its pearlescent sheen. Working in tandem with hyaluronic acid and Persian silk extract, it’s a richly moisturizing formula that de-puffs and illuminates simultaneously—making it one of the more glamorous options out there.

eye cream travel kit

Beyond a shot of caffeine, the secret to this wallet-friendly serum is Epigallocatechin Galatyl Glucoside—an ingredient derived from green tea and blessedly shorthanded as EGCG. The formula has been the go-to salve for Morgan Halaska, the marketing and communications director for a large brewery in the Upper Midwest, for years. “I have deep-set eyes, and I’ll do whatever I can to keep dark circles at bay,” she says, calling this minor miracle worker “the morning cup of coffee for my face.”

eye cream travel kit

Laura Roncagli, co-founder of MyBeautik and a professional makeup artist based in Italy, skips makeup altogether when flying. Instead she swipes on Avène contouring cream, followed by a spritz of the brand’s facial mist . The featherweight eye cream includes chamomile for depuffing, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and thermal spring water to calm frazzled skin. “Moisturizing during the flight is not only better for your skin health,” Roncagli says, “it makes you feel more comfortable during the entirety of the journey.”

The Best Carry-On-Friendly Skin-Care Kits You Should Pack When Traveling, According to a Dermatologist

eye cream travel kit

Traveling is all fun and games until you start to wonder, How in the world am I going to keep up with my skin-care routine? Whether you have a 10-step regimen  or stick with the basics , consistency is key when it comes to maintaining your glow. That’s exactly why your skin will thank you for becoming familiar with the best travel skin-care kits.

Complexion upkeep starts as soon as you take off, so don't wait until you land to start digging into your travel-sized goodies. "Cabin air is often less than 20 percent humidity, whereas at home, humidity is 30 percent or more," says  Gretchen Frieling , MD, a board-certified dermatopathologist. "That means that skin will lack moisture and dry out faster."

  • Anna Guanche, MD , Anna Guanche, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and the owner of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas.

With that in mind, you'll want to double down on hydrating ingredients while you're in the air... and keep it going after you've touched down. Anna Guanche, MD , a board-certified dermatologist and owner of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, CA, recommends using “a light hydrating hyaluronic acid serum that is fragrance-free" and applying "a hydrating mask about an hour before landing.” If you’re not quite comfortable looking like Jason from Friday the 13th around your airplane companions, you might also consider using eye masks, says Dr. Guanche. For a little extra hydration, Dr. Frieling's a fan of keeping a facial spray on hand to spritz as needed.

Of course, what you put into your body is as important as what you put on your skin. “First of all, I tell people who are traveling that they should hydrate and drink plenty of water, since the airplane dehydrates them,” says Dr. Guanche. According to Dr. Guanche, you also want to be mindful of how much caffeine and alcohol you drink on travel days because they can “exacerbate the dry, sallow look [people] can sometimes have after traveling.”

To maintain these solid skin-care practices once you've reached your final destination, invest in one of these travel skin-care kits that will keep your complexion in tip-top shape when you're traveling for the holidays—or, really, whenever.

The best travel skin-care kits to pack in your carry-on to keep your skin glowing

eye cream travel kit

Even though “at home” is in the name, this is absolutely one of the best skin-care travel kits. It’s got three of Murad’s fan-favorite retinol products (a serum, a moisturizer, and an eye cream)—all of which are designed to be gentle enough for use on all skin types—plus a cleanser. Since a lot of the products contain hyaluronic acid, it’s safe to say Dr. Guanche would recommend this kit to keep skin hydrated while on the go.

tatcha

The Tatcha Mini Treasure Set is a great way to sample some of the Tatcha Greats. You get the one-step Camellia Cleansing Oil (which will remove makeup and clean your face in one fell swoop) as well as The Deep Cleanse, The Essence, The Water Cream, and The Dewy Skin Cream. All are formulated to infuse maximum hydration that truly does show (W+G editors can vouch for this). What more could one ask for from a travel skin-care kit?

eye cream travel kit

The products in this kit include barrier-repairing goat milk and probiotics, which help fight free radicals that can cause premature aging. The set features a moisturizer, an exfoliating jelly cleanser, an eye serum, and a ceramide serum. If all that wasn’t enough to convince you, the kit also comes with a travel bag for easy storage and an adorable gingham hair clip.

eye cream travel kit

A travel skin-care routine doesn’t have to feature 10 steps in order for it to be effective. This travel-friendly skin care kit by Clinique makes skin care simple by narrowing it down to a three-step routine and focusing on the basics (and when you’re traveling, sometimes basic is best). Formulated for dry skin, this kit comes with a gentle cleanser, a clarifying lotion, and a moisturizing lotion.

eye cream travel kit

Florence by Mills (created by Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown) has a travel skin-care set, and it’s pretty excellent—and pretty affordable. It has five stars on Target, and comes with a facial cleanser, a moisturizer, a facial mask treatment, and some beauty products—like a lip gloss, mascara, and blush. What we really love about this set is the Dreamy Dew Moisturizer and Mind Glowing Peel Off Mask—both are rich in hydrating ingredients that’ll make your skin happy.

eye cream travel kit

With this TSA-approved skin care kit, you’ll be able to exfoliate, tone, and hydrate your skin. It also comes with a night cream so that you can take care of your skin as you catch some Zzzs. Since this kit is made specifically for jet-setters, it also comes with a bag to store all your goodies in.

eye cream travel kit

The five products in this skin care travel kit include a cleanser, mask, treatment lotion, serum, and a moisturizer. Some of the key ingredients in this kit are mint, which can reinvigorate your skin’s appearance; niacinamide, which reduces the appearance of pores; and caffeine from coffee, which is a natural way to recharge your skin.

eye cream travel kit

This is one of those skin-care travel kits that lets you treat yourself from head to toe. The Osea cleanser removes surface impurities while the hyaluronic sea serum keeps your skin hydrated by using hyaluronic acid. You also get protection cream, body oil, and a vegan leather bag.

eye cream travel kit

If you’re looking for a travel skin-care kit that treats and prevents breakouts, look no further than this Tula set. It comes with four products: a foaming cleanser, an acne-fighting moisturizer, and a treatment mask. To boot, it comes with a matching travel bag that I kind of want to use as a clutch.

eye cream travel kit

Rihanna is the queen of so many things, skin care included. Featuring a travel-size mini makeup remover and cleanser, a toner-serum, and a sunscreen-moisturizer, this definitely counts as one of the travel skin-care kits that checks all the boxes (and, bonus, that will cut a few steps from your routine). Plus, it now includes a sample of Fenty’s popular Butta Drop Whipped Oil Body Cream (you’ll be thanking yourself you bought it if your hotel room doesn’t supply you with complementary body lotion).

eye cream travel kit

Drunk Elephant re-launched its famous “Littles” a few months ago—just in time for holiday travel. The kit has all of the “big 5” products derms consider non-negotiables for a well-rounded routine (a cleanser, a vitamin C serum, an exfoliating serum, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen—plus a facial oil as an added bonus), so you can literally throw it in your bag and be out the door without a second thought.

Discover us, the traveler’s guide to eye creams & masks.

Traveling is a treat, but it can be stressful. With factors like sleep deprivation, weather and lifestyle changes, taking care of your skin is crucial, especially when you're on the go. Eye skincare products are essential to keeping your skin healthy – from reducing puffiness and dark circles to protecting from environmental stressors, the benefits of eye skincare are plentiful.

If you're planning your next trip, join us as we explore the importance of incorporating eye skincare into your travel routine, so you can look and feel your best wherever you wander.

Why eye skincare matters, especially when traveling

The skin around your eyes is thin and delicate, making it prone to visible signs of aging, sun damage, stress, and dehydration. Eye skincare products – including creams, serums, and masks – should form a part of your skincare routine from your 20s but become especially important when traveling. Yes, even in an airplane, skincare is a must! Of course, you’ll probably want to simplify your skincare and makeup routine while traveling to save time and space, but that doesn't mean you should skip the essentials.

Whether you're traveling by road or by air, chances are your sleep schedule will be disrupted. If you're traveling overseas, you’ll also have to deal with circadian changes due to different time zones. And lack of sleep isn't the only thing that negatively affects your skin – dehydration caused by airplane travel, increased alcohol consumption, and changes to your daily habits can also have a negative impact, not just on your health but on your skin. The first place this will show up? The area under and around your eyes.

How to care for the eye area when traveling

Late nights, jet lag, and dehydration can keep you from looking and feeling your best while traveling. To treat the visible signs of travel, you need to learn how to pack skincare for travel – which not only includes choosing travel-friendly products but also choosing the right products. To care for the area around your eyes and avoid dark circles, fine lines, and puffiness, we recommend our Baggage Claim™ travel-friendly range. You have two options: Baggage Claim™ Eye Masks or Baggage Claim™ Everyday Eye Cream .

The under-eye masks visibly brighten, hydrate and reduce puffiness while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and dark circles. Enriched with hyaluronic acid, peptides, and aloe leaf extract, they provide a host of benefits, delivered deep into the skin for maximum results. Pop these on while enjoying your morning coffee or during (offscreen) zoom meetings!

If you prefer the texture of a lusciously whipped cream, opt for our Everyday Eye Cream. This potent formula, enriched with shea butter, calendula extract and Meiview™ provides all the benefits of Baggage Claim™ Eye Masks, with additional skin tightening and lifting benefits. The antimicrobial applicator gently massages the eye area, for firmer, brighter and more lifted skin. For best results, apply twice daily.

Your skincare should always be a priority, but if you need an extra boost covering up dark under-eye circles, educate yourself on how to treat and conceal dark circles using the best makeup techniques.

Ingredients to look for in eye skincare products

When it comes to eye skincare products, the ingredients are essential. While there are many options to choose from, certain ingredients have proven benefits for the eye area. Here are some key ingredients to look for when buying eye skincare products.

Peptides are small chains of amino acids that help stimulate collagen production in the skin. When applied to the eye area, peptides can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and puffiness. They also have antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radicals that cause damage.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin. When used in an eye skincare product, it can help hydrate the eye area and plump up fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is particularly useful for those with dry or dehydrated skin.

This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the skin and protect it from environmental damage. When applied to the eye area, vitamin C can help reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. It also helps to stimulate collagen production, which can help to firm and tighten the skin around the eyes.

When shopping for an eye cream or serum, look for products that contain one or more of these ingredients. These ingredients can help to improve the overall health and appearance of the eye area, leaving you looking refreshed and revitalized.

Other skincare tips while traveling

You’ve packed your travel-size eye cream, serum, or mask and have your travel skincare routine on your phone memo and ready to work its magic. But is there anything else you can do to keep your skin feeling comfortable and fresh while traveling? There sure is! For general skin health, be sure to practice the following:

Simplify your skincare routine

When traveling, it's best to keep your skincare routine as simple as possible – this way, you're more likely to stick to it. You’ll want to be consistent, though, because chances are weather changes and environmental pollution are affecting your skin while you're enjoying the sights and sounds of new places. Be sure to remove your makeup at the end of each day using a gentle makeup remover such as B.O.M. Voyage Cleansing Balm .

<product>3</product>

Wear sunscreen religiously

Even if you're not spending a lot of time outside, it's important to protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, and make sure to reapply every two hours if you're spending time outdoors. Pack Up & Glow Priming Mineral SPF 40 provides a healthy glow and is never greasy, sticky, or heavy.

<product>4</product>

Stay hydrated and eat well

Drinking plenty of water is important for maintaining healthy skin, especially while traveling. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, and avoid drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate you. Of course, you’ll want to indulge while away, but be sure to include plenty of fruits and vegetables to maintain a healthy balance and keep your skin looking its best.

“Eye creams are a game changer in skincare. It does take time, however, so give them at least three months to see a difference. Drugstore creams are just as effective as luxury brands–it’s about consistency,” says dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal. In other words, actually applying an eye cream every day is more important than the price tag of the one you choose, especially when drugstore skin care brands are upping their game each year. Plus, there are lots of different kinds of eye creams at the drugstore, from retinol eye creams and peptide eye creams for fine lines to caffeine eye creams for de-puffing.

We spoke to dermatologists, looked inside our own bathroom cabinets, and read through hundreds of online reviews to find the 14 best affordable drugstore eye creams. They’re at your fingertips—just keep scrolling!

Every skin lover knows how powerful and effective retinol is, but sometimes, it can be too strong to use around the eyes. “I love Cetaphil’s new Healthy Renew Eye Gel Serum. The formula contains a gentle yet effective retinol alternative to help minimize the look of dark circles, fine lines, and signs of fatigue around the eye area. The lightweight formula also incorporates Vitamins B3 and B5 to help hydrate, soothe, and repair skin’s moisture barrier while botanical extracts help target dullness and uneven skin tone ,” says Dr. Engelmen.

Key ingredients : Peptides, vitamin B3, vitamin B5

Best for : Dark circles, fine lines

Amazon rating : 4.3/5 stars

An Amazon reviewer says : “I’ve usually had good experiences with Cetaphil products, so when I found this Hydrating Eye Gel Serum I had to give it a try. I have sensitive and aging skin with more fine lines around my eyes and some puffy, dark circles under eyes. As with other Cetaphil products I’ve used, this continues the trend of being gentle and effective.”

Cold winter air can cause uncomfortable dryness around the eyes, which is why it’s important to use a hydrating eye cream. Not only does it calm and moisturize the area, but it also doubles as a glowing makeup primer.

Key ingredients : Cucumber extract, shea butter, green tea extract

Best for: Dryness, dark circles

Ulta rating: 4.2/5 stars

An ELLE editor says : “Let’s not sleep on e.l.f’s Holy Hydration line, people! This past summer, I took the mini version of the hydrating collection on a European vacation, and the eye cream was the first product in the line I used to the last scrape. I’m a fan of how hydrated and plumped my under-eye area looked once I woke up, especially since I devoured several glasses of wine the night before, thanks to a nourishing cocktail of hyaluronic acid and peptides.” – Nerisha Penrose , ELLE.com Beauty Commerce Editor

“This has peptides and ceramides which help hydrate the eyelid skin,” says Dr. Lal. Along with these ingredients, the CeraVe Skin Renewing Cream also utilizes caffeine and hyaluronic acid to revitalize, plump, and hydrate the under eyes.

Key ingredients : Caffeine, peptides, hyaluronic acid, ceramides

Best for: Fine lines, dark circles, puffiness

Amazon rating: 4.4/5 stars

An expert reviewer says : “They say you never forget your first….eye cream? Mine was this beauty, and it was a strong staple in my skincare routine throughout high school and college. You get a great amount for the price tag, which was (and still is!) a dream come true.” – Bianca Rodriguez , commerce manager

No7 is a brand that’s earned its reputation for being effective yet affordable. This one does it all: plumping and moisturizing ingredients take on puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines.

Key ingredients : Peptides, niacinamide, shea butter

Best for: Puffiness, fine lines, dark circles

Ulta rating : 4.5/5 stars

An ELLE editor says : “I remember going to a Target with my mom in my youth and triumphantly returning with tubes of No7 Eye Cream. We had read online that an independent study had shown that this particular eye cream was sold out everywhere in Europe after a study showed that it reduced wrinkles. Since then, I’ve favored No.7 eye creams, including this one, because they’re reliably creamy and moisturizing. This one in particular uses the brand’s form of peptide technology, which is a form of technology used by pricier brands to improve elasticity and hydrate the skin.” – Kathleen Hou , ELLE Beauty Director

The eye area is especially sensitive, and this pick from Avène assures you that you can rest easy. The soothing, gentle formula combats puffiness while also infusing the skin with plenty of hydration using the brand’s signature thermal spring water.

Key ingredients : Hyaluronic acid, chamomile extract, thermal spring water

Best for : Puffiness, dryness

Ulta rating : 4.7/5 stars

An Ulta reviewer says : “I originally bought this during a bout with eyelid dermatitis but now use it all the time. It’s moisturizing and does not irritate my very sensitive eyelid skin.”

If fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes are your main concern, this powerful cream can tackle them. “This is an OG with both retinol and peptides. This is great for wrinkly skin and dark circles,” says Dr. Lal. This product comes in two different formulations, one for the lid and one for the under-eyes. With consistent use, you won't believe the results. With efficacy like this, we understand why this skincare line is a favorite of actress Sarah Jessica Parker .

Key ingredients : Retinol, kelp extract, squalane

Best for: Fine lines, puffiness, dark circles

Amazon rating: 4.1/5 stars

An Amazon reviewer says : “I’m pretty impressed with this cream. I feel like I can feel the creams tightening my eyes when I first apply it. And this makes my eye area look really smooth the next morning and I’m over 50. I have sensitive eyes and haven’t had any problems from using this.”

This dermatologist-approved drugstore eye cream firms the skin around your eyes thanks to its copper peptides. Its tightening effect results in a smoother and lifted look.

Key ingredients : Copper peptides, plant stem cells

Best for: Fine lines, dullness, puffiness

Ulta rating: 4.3/5 stars

An Ulta reviewer says : “This eye cream is good for sensitive eyes. It doesn’t sting or make my eyes watery. I do see a slight lift in my upper eyelids, and the skin around my eyes is moisturized.”

If you want visible results, the Neutrogena eye cream is a classic for a reason. “This is a great agent with hyaluronic acid and retinol to hydrate the plump the skin,” says Dr. Lal. It’s also a favorite for anyone looking to prevent or soften the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Key ingredients : Retinol, hyaluronic acid

Best for: Fine lines, dark circles, dryness

Amazon rating : 4.4/5 stars

An Amazon reviewer says : “I have been buying Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair for 5 years. I use it under my eyes, corner of eyes, and for lip lines. It works wonderfully and I highly recommend it. Sometimes, I dab it all over my face and the results never disappoint. I am 72 years old and people think I look 10-12 years younger than my stated age. I don’t bother with other brands, because in my humble opinion, the others can’t compare.”

Retinol can be irritating, but this eye cream is made to be gentle on even the most sensitive skin. The formula combines retinol and caffeine to create a dynamic duo that reduces puffiness and the appearance of fine lines.

Key ingredients : Retinol, thermal spring water, caffeine

Ulta rating: 4.4/5 stars

An Ulta reviewer says : “I have tried lots of eye creams over the years and, though many have been great for moisturizing and reducing puffiness, this is the first one that actually lightens under eye circles too. (Many claim to, but this one works!) This product is amazing! It leaves my skin feeling smooth, reduces the appearance of fine lines, AND lightens the shadows under my eyes. I’m so glad my dermatologist recommended this product!”

If you’re not a fan of heavier formulas, it might be time to try a serum. This one is packed with peptides and caffeine to plump and de-puff simultaneously, helping you look wide awake (even when you don't look it).

Key ingredients : Peptides, niacinamide, caffeine

An Ulta reviewer says : “I didn’t have high hopes for this product simply because I thought I needed medical intervention for my under eye area. It was looking so crepey, and lines were showing a lot with makeup on, even with eye creams. I now use this day and night, I noticed the result the first day! I am actually blown away. My under eye looks smooth and hydrated. Not crepey at all. I will continue to buy this!”

EltaMD Renew Eye Gel

Renew Eye Gel

If you use a vitamin C serum on your face for its brightening effects, it may be time to use that same ingredient to reduce the look of dark circles around the eyes. This eye cream has a gel-like consistency that also hydrates and plumps at the same time.

Key ingredients : Hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamin C, vitamin E

Best for: Dark circles, fine lines

Amazon rating: 4.3/5 stars

An Amazon reviewer says : “I’m ordering this product for the fourth time. It seems to work on fine lines and dullness under the eyes within minutes, and I do see an improvement overall in the skin quality around my eyes where I was seeing more than just fine lines developing. I’m a 51 year-old woman with problematic skin– eczema, psoriasis, allergic to more lotions than not–and this doesn’t trigger any reactions. It’s not the cheapest you can buy, but personally I think it works as well as much more expensive products that I have tried.”

L’Oréal Paris Dermo-Expertise Eye Defense Eye Cream

Dermo-Expertise Eye Defense Eye Cream

This affordable cream combines hyaluronic acid and caffeine to reduce dark circles and puffiness, all in a lightweight gel. Because it sinks in quickly, it’s a great option to wear underneath concealer during the day.

Key ingredients : Caffeine, hyaluronic acid

An Amazon reviewer says : “This eye gel smooths on so beautifully that it is a pleasure to apply. My skin loves it and my eyes have no objection. Great stuff!”

LilyAna Naturals Eye Cream

Eye Cream

If this eye cream looks familiar, it's probably because it’s gone viral on TikTok, thanks to its gentle and effective ingredients. With hydrating oils, soothing extracts, and anti-aging ingredients, this is a must-have.

Key ingredients : Niacinamide, vitamin E, vitamin B, aloe leaf juice

Best for: Dark circles, dryness, puffiness

An Amazon reviewer says : “Delighted with this product which arrived promptly and was well packaged. I have been using this product once a day for 2 months now and it has exceeded expectations. Skin around the eye is much smoother and brighter. I received unexpected praise from two friends separately who wanted to know what I had done! Cream is light, silky and easily absorbed. Worth every penny and I will definitely order again. Would make a fabulous gift.”

Dr. Dendy Engelmen is a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon based in New York City.

Why should you use an eye cream?

line

Even if your skin care cabinet is full of serums and moisturizers, it’s very important to invest in products specifically formulated to use around the eyes. “It’s important to focus on caring for the area around your eyes , as it is 40 percent thinner than the rest of your face, and can be the first to show signs of aging. Having a dedicated eye product is very important for people especially after the age of 25,” says Dr. Engelmen.

What are the best ingredients to look for in an eye cream?

The most common complaints people have about their eye area include fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness. Depending on what you’re looking to treat, you should try to find products with different ingredients. “You want to look for peptides, retinol, and hyaluronic acid when looking at ingredients in an eye cream,” says Dr. Lal.

These are ingredients that Dr. Engelmen also loves. “I look to skin care formulas that are science-based and harness effective and powerful ingredients. Some of the best ingredients for your under eye and lids include peptides, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid . Peptides smooth fine lines and wrinkles, ceramides fortify the skin barrier, and hyaluronic acid adds moisture and an instant plumping effect,” she says.

Are drugstore eye creams as effective as luxury ones?

line

Good news–you don’t have to break the bank to get great results from your eye cream. “It’s very possible to find great, evidence-based products at all price points–over the counter and at mass,” says Dr. Engelmen. For Dr. Lal, measuring effectiveness less about price point and more about ingredients and how the product is used. He adds, “Skin topical therapies can do wonders for the eyes. It does take time, however, so give them at least three months to see a difference. Drug store creams are just as effective as luxury brands–it’s about consistency!”

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
