Authentic Farm Experiences, Northern Ireland

Explore dunfin farm in the glens of antrim.

We are a real working farm and we want our experiences to reflect that. Visitors will enjoy an authentic, honest visit with a modern farm family in a traditional landscape. With epic scenery and nature, sheep and sheep dogs and great Glens of Antrim hospitality. The different experiences offer a variety of activities depending on your interest and desire to be involved.

About Dunfin Farm

Our family has been living in Glenshesk and farming sheep and cattle here for over 70 years. We are deeply rooted in this special place and feel privileged to live and work in such a beautiful and diverse landscape. The Glens of Antrim are without doubt beautiful but are also challenging to farm and as such little has changed over the years in the area with old traditional practices like hill farming and peat cutting still common place. We welcome visitors to our farm to sample authentic and traditional experiences in stunning locations.

Farm Experiences

The different experiences offer a variety of activities depending on your interest and desire to be involved. We can cater for different group sizes, a minimum of two and tailor the experience to your needs. All our experiences are pre-booked and your booking is exclusive to you and your party.

Shearing at Glen Keen

References from tripadvisor, treat yourself - not-to-be missed.

A group of 6 of us visited as part of the weekend celebration of 60th birthdays and were so glad we did. From beginning to end, it was a pleasure and Catherine, George and all the team so deserve success - they work very hard to make sure everyone has a memorable experience. There should be more of these kinds of visitor experiences in Ireland. Fabulous scenery, the great outdoors, a unique experience and lovely people and food. Thank you.

Glen Keen Farm is a wonderful experience of a working sheep farm, with the sheep herding exhibition and famine tour the best in the west of Ireland! It has a very informative visitor centre and a lovely café and craft shop. Definitely visit if you’re in the Louisburgh area.

Highlight of my vacation in Ireland!

The family who owns this farm are just wonderful! You get to see how the dogs work with the sheep, Michael was just wonderful as well as his dogs! We enjoyed a lovely lunch with our tour group with music and dancing. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed the opportunity to see this wonderful family owned farm. Was treated as family while we were there, owner came out and said a few lovely words and introduced his son. This is a must see!

Northern Irelands only UNESCO World Heritage Site Giants Causeway is on the northern Antrim Coast, steeped in mystery & legend and most definitely a must see. There are approximately 40,000 basalt interlocking columns created by volcanic fissure eruption 60 million years ago. Legend has it that an Irish giant named Finn McCool created a causeway across the sea to face his rival the Scottish giant Bennandoner. Following their meeting Bennadoner is reputed to have torn up the causeway & fled back to Scotland leaving behind what is visible today.

Agriculture

Agriculture is a vital part of the Northern Ireland economy. Meat, dairy & eggs is the largest sector. 75 percent of Northern Ireland's countryside is farmed in some way.

We will visit dairy, beef and sheep enterprises and hear about the impact now that the UK has left the EU. We also visit a local apple grower who produces cider and of course the Bushmills whiskey distillery.

We stay at the 4* Dunadry Hotel and Gardens Hotel, 25 minutes' drive from Belfast. This historic hotel was formally a fort, a paper mill and latterly a linen mill. The hotel and gardens have recently been refurbished.

We are staying here for the duration of the tour, the perfect place to unpack,  relax and enjoy the facilities our hotel has to offer. Maybe a stroll round the garden to the millrace and Secret Garden. Alternatively go for a dip in the pool or enjoy a ‘thermal journey’ in the sauna & steam room. Beauty treatments & massages are also available.

‘Transition’ farm support for Northern Ireland to start in 2025

  • Payments, schemes and grants

© Adobe Stock

Farmers in Northern Ireland will receive a new Farm Sustainability Transition Payment in 2025 to replace the Basic Payment Scheme, with the full Farm Sustainability Payment coming into operation in 2026, the department of agriculture has confirmed.

The new area payment is designed to provide a “safety net” for farmers and will account for the majority of the support budget initially, but will be reduced over time as other, greener policies come into play.

See also: Timeline revealed for farm policy shift in Northern Ireland

Exact payment rates for 2025 have yet to be declared, but as a result of the change, the minimum area for making a claim will rise from 3ha to 5ha.

The new payments will also be subject to progressive capping, starting with a 20% reduction at £60,000.

To be eligible, farmers will have to comply with new sustainability standards, participate in the Soil Nutrient Health scheme, and develop a nutrient management plan.

Furthermore, businesses that did not meet the farming activity requirements in the reference period of 2020 and/or 2021 will not be eligible for entitlements for the new payment scheme.

This change will affect landowners who have no livestock or are not growing arable crops, explained Ulster Farmers’ Union president David Brown.

“Many still receive BPS entitlements and trade these each year, while others manage to meet active farming rules by keeping their land in prime agricultural condition or creating revenue from selling grass/grass silage,” he said.

“They will no longer be able to do this under the new payments.”

These businesses will have until the closure of the entitlement trading window in May 2025 to sell their BPS entitlements, otherwise they will cease to have a value.

A Daera spokesman explained that, while these changes reflected policy decisions already taken, actual implementation will require underpinning legislation to be passed in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

“This will be taken forward in the next number of months.”
