I’m sure Filter would’ve been great except for some reason everybody’s information that they had about Filter being with Ace was incorrect I went to the shower spent over 70 bucks plus the gas to get to the show and $10 for the parking fee find out it was nothing but a kid band from South Korea with no Filter some K-pop band instead Please let me know when they are in Atlanta area

They cancelled 10.20.19 show at Pubrock in Scottsdale AZ. No notice given to ticket holders by Eventbrite... Was really looking forward to the show, no acknowledgement of it on Filter's website... Hope they rebook though.
Very good show. Richard Patrick's voice has never been this good and the 2016 line up is excellent. I hope they'll be back in Europe soon to play à longer set.

In recognition of their 30th anniversary, alternative/industrial rock band Filter is set to embark on their first European headlining tour in over eight years (Dates Below).
Filter Return To Europe
The band’s performance will showcase a mix of tracks from their recent album, “The Algorithm,” and popular hits from their extensive three-decade catalogue. Commemorating the 29th anniversary of their debut album “Short Bus,” Filter has partnered with Distortion Inc. to release The Short Bus Pedal. Richard Patrick, the founder of Filter, remarked:
“We’ve dug up all the original gear from my mom’s basement to make the pedal identical to the Short Bus sound. The result is uncanny.” The pedal, available for pre-order, is a limited-edition item and comes with a certificate signed by Patrick, indicating its authenticity. It is expected to start shipping in late February. Patrick has been involved in the development of this robust stage-ready pedal and plans to use it during the tour. A stage-used and signed version of the pedal will be offered for sale during and after the tour.
Primordial General Mayhem
Primordial Radio is hugely excited to announce the return of the Primordial General Mayhem 2024 with dynamic and hard-hitting five-piece retro-rockers THE TREATMENT headlining the Friday night.
Fresh from their massively successful tour with Buckcherry, they are set to deliver an electrifying performance with one of their biggest-ever headline shows to date. Joining them are the Brighton-based punk-rock aficionados THE BAR STOOL PREACHERS , alongside energetic South Wales rockers JAMES & THE COLD GUN and hard rock sensations FURY , who made a remarkable impression last year by drawing an overwhelming crowd to the festival’s smaller stage.

Last month, FILTER shared the official Vicente Cordero / Industrialism Films -directed music video for the band's latest single, "Face Down" , which will appear on "The Algorithm" .
Regarding why he decided to drop the previously announced working title for the project, "They Got Us Right Where They Want Us, At Each Other's Throats" , Patrick told Soundsphere magazine: "It was just too long. I thought it was kind of funny because it was long, but then I just realized it's just too much to say."
As for the inspiration for "The Algorithm" title, Richard said: "That's indicative of just where we are as a species on the planet and the whole A.I. and everything and where we are digitally in the world."
Patrick spoke about the lyrical themes covered on "The Algorithm" in an interview with Lancer of Watertown, New York's 94 Rock WOTT radio station. Asked what inspired the latest batch of FILTER songs, Richard said: "America. Just social media, America, divisive behavior. We're all in this together. The ultimate message is we're all in this together, bro. We're all on this tiny little planet. And it's fragile, it's being polluted, the people on it are fighting. We live a very, very, very beautiful life for 70 years or so, and then we pass on. And let's take advantage of this time and work together and protect each other and help each other. And that's the ultimate message of the record."
Originally conceived in 2018 as a collaboration between Patrick and fellow FILTER founding member Brian Liesegang , the project was given a tentative title, "ReBus" , as a nod to FILTER 's 1995 debut, "Short Bus" , before being changed to "They Got Us Right Where They Want Us, At Each Other's Throats" and later to "Murica" and then back to "They Got Us Right Where They Want Us, At Each Other's Throats" .
"Face Down" followed the release of "For The Beaten" , which was the first FILTER track to be issued by Golden Robot in October 2022. Written by Patrick , "Face Down" is classic FILTER — a tight song with loads going on, including some killer drum fills and a restrained vocal delivery that seems ready to explode at any given point as the song progresses. The track lets you know early on where it is headed and locks you in from the start without ever becoming predictable.
" 'Face Down' speaks to the hate and negativity plaguing the world today," said Patrick . "I wrote it after being inundated with lies, deceptions, and pure vitriol I saw on social media. I'm pumped. I can't wait for everyone to hear the full album."
For the first time in its 30-year career, FILTER will present "California Screamin'" — a full concert global stream performed live on location in Los Angeles. HITKOR will be the official on demand streaming partner for the show, which will take place June 17. The live performance will include special guests, classic songs FILTER has not performed in over 25 years and the debut of brand-new material.
"I've been itching to do a live stream since things shut down a couple years ago but I got caught up in the studio working on our new album," said Patrick . "When Scott [ Donnell , CMO HITKOR ] came to me and told me about HITKOR , and then invited me down to see MINISTRY do their thing, I was sold."
"California Screamin'" tickets are $14.99 and All-Access passes are $19.99. For this special engagement, FrontRow advanced ticket discounts are $9.99 and $14.99, respectively, and are available until Friday, June 2. Purchase only at HITKOR.com .
Last September, Patrick reunited with his former bandmates in NINE INCH NAILS for the first time in over 25 years. Patrick , the first guitarist to ever tour with Trent Reznor and NINE INCH NAILS , was in the band for four years before departing to form FILTER .
Patrick 's career is a vision of multifaceted creativity, which he has delivered throughout his 30-plus years producing music professionally through his band FILTER , various collaborations, side projects, super groups, scoring films and writing for soundtracks.
Patrick 's initial foray into the public eye was as NINE INCH NAILS ' first touring guitarist. Patrick had met Reznor in the late '80s in a music store in Cleveland. The two became close friends and then bandmates. Patrick played with the band from 1989 to 1993, appearing in numerous music videos including "Down In It" , "Head Like A Hole" , "Wish" and "Gave Up" .
FILTER 's debut album, "Short Bus" , was released in 1995 and went platinum, largely due to the success of the first single "Hey Man Nice Shot" . The follow-up, 1999's "Title Of Record" , also went platinum driven by the huge crossover success of the song "Take A Picture" . FILTER 's third album, "The Amalgamut" , celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. The album spawned such classic songs as "Where Do We Go From Here" and "American Cliché" .
In 2006, the ARMY OF ANYONE project — a supergroup led by Patrick with Dean and Robert DeLeo of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and Ray Luzier of KORN — came to light, releasing one album and a tour before each went back to their respective bands. Patrick refocused on FILTER , releasing "Anthems For The Damned" in 2008, "The Trouble With Angels" in 2010, "The Sun Comes Out Tonight" in 2013 and "Crazy Eyes" in 2016, and two singles in 2020.
FILTER recently kicked off a six-month-long tour crisscrossing the United States and Canada before a planned trip overseas. FILTER 's tour plans so far include headline shows, festival appearances and a place on the "Freaks On Parade" tour with ROB ZOMBIE , ALICE COOPER and MINISTRY . The band will be offering a limited number of "Filter Fanatic" VIP packages that include exclusive merch, signed tour posters, used gear items, meet-and-greets and photos with the band on many of the dates. More information and tickets are available at www.officialfilter.com .

FILTER have announced new UK & EU tour dates in March
Alternative Industrial rockers Filter have announced a series of headline dates across mainland Europe and the U.K. celebrating the release of new music and the band’s formation 30 years ago. It is Filter’s first tour in the region in 8 years. “It’s been way too long since Filter has been back to Europe,” said Filter’s Richard Patrick. “Some of my greatest touring memories have been performing in the U.K. and across Europe. I’m so proud of our new record, I cannot wait to share it with everyone over there. ” The band has recently played select shows and were special guests on the Freaks On Parade tour with Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper and Ministry . The world tour continues into 2024 with headline dates in the UK/EU in March 2024. All dates are below. Tickets & VIP packages
Platinum-selling, post-industrial/alternative rock pioneers, Filter have released their much-anticipated new album, ‘The Algorithm’ . The album, their first in seven years, is a tight conceptual statement heralding career-best songwriting from mastermind Richard Patrick and giving the classic Filter sound a modern sonic edge. The variety of writing on ‘The Algorithm’ attests to this being the freshest batch of songs that Patrick has dropped as one long-playing statement under the Filter moniker. This can be attributed to Patrick’s long list of collaborators – Zack Munowitz, Brian Liesegang, Sam Tinnesz, Mark Jackson, Ian Scott and Seth Mosely – with different writing partnerships contributing to an overall more colourful and creative patchwork, all unified under the vision of Patrick. Richard Patrick , the creative mastermind behind Filter , has spent over 30 years pushing the boundaries of musical expression. His tenure as Nine Inch Nails ‘ touring guitarist and involvement in the band’s iconic music videos cemented his place in rock history. Patrick left NIN in 1993 to form Filter. Their explosive debut album, Short Bus , achieved platinum status, propelled by the breakout single “Hey Man Nice Shot.” The success continued with their follow-up release, ‘ Title Of Record’ , also going platinum thanks to the crossover hit “Take A Picture.” Despite struggles with addiction and a stint in rehab, Patrick’s determination led to the formation of the supergroup, Army Of Anyone , in 2006 alongside Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Luzier of Korn , before refocusing on Filter’s output of later lauded albums, “Anthems For The Damned” (2008), “The Trouble With Angels” (2010), “The Sun Comes Out Tonight” (2013), and “Crazy Eyes” (2016). Craft Recordings and Rhino Records have been tending to the Filter legacy, recently releasing deluxe remastered editions of touchstone albums, ‘Title Of Record’ and ‘The Amalgamut.’ Now, after 20 years of sobriety and a seven-year break from his main artistic vehicle, Patrick unleashes ‘The Algorithm,’ promising a sonic revolution for fans worldwide. The fight is on. Richard Patrick has got your back: “Revolution’s on its way / Never surrender never surrender.”

Filter announces March 2024 European & UK Headlining Tour
“It’s been way too long since Filter has been back to Europe”, said Filter’s Richard Patrick . “Some of my greatest touring memories have been performing in the UK and across Europe. I’m so proud of our new record, I cannot wait to share with everyone over there”.
The European tour, starting in March 2025, follows a 6-month-long trek that crisscrossed the United States and Canada, and will hit such countries as The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, The Czech Republic, Austria, Poland and the UK.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the band’s birth. In 1993, founder and lead vocalist Patrick placed an ad in Scene Magazine in Cleveland, OH, shortly after leaving Nine Inch Nails as their touring guitarist, looking to form a band that would eventually evolve into Filter.
The celebration of Filter’s anniversary began in late 2022 when Patrick was invited to join Nine Inch Nails for a special fan day Q&A at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The following night NIN mastermind Trent Reznor had Patrick and other former and current NIN band members join him for a special performance at the Blossom Center in Cleveland, OH, where the band was originally formed. The expanded NIN performed such staples as “Eraser”, “Wish”, “Sin”, “Gave Up”, “Head Like a Hole”, and a cover of Filter’s 1994 monster hit, “Hey Man Nice Shot”.
Filter followed that performance with the release of their first new single in over two years – “For the Beaten” followed by “Face Down” in May of this year. These hard hitting and well received singles are from the much-anticipated new full-length album that is set to come out later this summer on Golden Robot Records.
The live energy of Filter cannot be denied, 2023 has seen the band performing at numerous festivals and headlining shows, with a late summer tour with Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper and Ministry called Freaks on Parade.

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.
Create memories to last a lifetime
Whether it’s your favourite band, an evening with friends, discovering new artists or the seventh show on the tour, we are your go-to home for all things live music.
Don’t miss out on the biggest announcement and keep checking back for latest news and last chance tickets.

Yesterday, Glass Animals announced details of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, I Love You So F***ing Much , set for release on July 19th . The album is introduced by the band’s new single, “ Creatures in Heaven ,” out now—listen HERE and watch the visualizer HERE .
I Love You So F***ing Much is the follow-up to 2020’s critically revered Dreamland , which sold over 12 million copies globally and gave life to “ Heat Waves ,” the record-breaking song that became the biggest international hit from a British band in almost 30 years . It was the first song by a British band since the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” in 1995 to claim #1 for five consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 , and the first song to reach #1 with a single writer and producer since Pharell’s “Happy” —leading to the pop world’s biggest acts, including Florence Welch , all wanting to work with Glass Animals frontman, songwriter, and producer, Dave Bayley . But the birth of I Love You So F***ing Much was an existential crisis. Dave found himself struggling to make sense of this newfound global stardom, having watched it all happen while the world was in lockdown.
He says, “Life can change dramatically, but sometimes you aren’t able to change as quickly on a personal level. You end up feeling like a spectator. And then you are asked and expected to be a certain type of person, a different person. But…I wasn’t sure how. It confused me to the point of not knowing who I was or if anything was real.” It took being stranded on a cliff in a wooden house on stilts during one of California’s biggest storms in history to push that feeling into a full existential crisis. In forced isolation, watching trees tumble down mountains and assuming “death was coming,” Dave began asking questions of himself, of the universe, and of the human experience: namely, love. As he came to accept himself as an introvert, Dave realized that “human connection and the love between us is much bigger, more important, and more complex than anything else” . “Creatures in Heaven” is the sublime first glimpse into ten intimate love stories set against the backdrop of the universe.

UK churches keen to host heavy metal bands after duet with organist is a hit
After ‘bonkers gig’ at Huddersfield town hall paired doom metal bands with pipe organist, churches are keen to get in on the act
It was a “bonkers gig”, pairing heavy metal with a pipe organ – a musical curiosity that the bands thought would surely seldom be repeated, if ever.
But Pantheïst and Arð, the doom metals bands who performed the concert at Huddersfield town hall last year, have been inundated with requests to repeat the performance – with churches leading the way.
“We thought that churches would look at it as slightly heretical, – having a metal band playing in church – but that wasn’t the case at all,” said Mark Mynett, a senior lecturer in music production at Huddersfield University. “They really embraced this bold new world – some of them talked about bringing a new audience into church.”
The experiment last August saw Pantheïst and Arð accompanied by David Pipe, the cathedral organist at the Diocese of Leeds, playing Huddersfield town hall’s 1860 “Father” Willis organ.
Mynett said that after the Observer covered the event , it was featured on Radio 4’s Sunday Worship , prompting dozens of churches, among others, to get in touch with him and Pipe.
Now the new genre has its own name – “organic metal” – and a series of similar concerts is planned, starting with gigs this week at the deconsecrated St Paul’s church in Huddersfield.
It will feature Mynett’s band, Plague of Angels, alongside Pipe on the organ and Anabelle Iratni, a classically trained vocalist, who will sing an aria by Handel – as well as delivering death metal growls.
Concerts at St Mary Redcliffe, a gothic church in Bristol that has architecture dating back to the 12th century, and Rochester Cathedral in Kent are being planned, along with other venues. There is also strong interest from Germany, Mynett added.
Part of the reason for churches’ interest is a hope that gigs may help to reverse the rapid decline in attendance. About eight churches of all denominations close each week, according to Martin Renshaw of the charity Pipe Up for Pipe Organs .
“There were around 42,000 churches 20 years ago,” he said. “It’s probably down to about 35,000 now.”
Renshaw and his colleagues have rescued nearly 100 organs and shipped them to churches in Italy, the Philippines, Norway, the Netherlands and France – although post-Brexit red tape means that he has been charged €2,000 (£1.700) in import duties for organs being given away in Europe.
Church leaders have been trying to maintain their importance as community spaces by holding other events, such as silent movies accompanied by organs, as well as other recitals.
Joe Cryan, director of music at St Mary Redcliffe, said: “Part of my mission is to see how we make music at reflect Bristol now, because it’s very much a secular city, not a sacred city. How do we make the music and the liturgy do that?
“Our organ is world-famous – Handel played it. It has 4,327 pipes. Roger Sayer, who wrote the music for [Christopher Nolan’s] Interstellar with Hans Zimmer , came and performed the soundtrack here. There’s a lot of history, so by doing something like a rock concert with an organ follows on in that kind of tradition.”
Churches have often been used for other purposes: in the 16 th and 17 th centuries, Londoners would “walk Paul’s”, meeting in the nave of the old St Paul’s Cathedral to swap news and do business, while St Paul’s churchyard was used by book and newspaper sellers before they moved to Fleet Street.
Not all modern events are popular with parishioners, however. A silent disco at Canterbury Cathedral in February, known as the “rave in the nave”, was opposed by campaigners, who disliked the idea of churches being used for dancing and drinking alcohol. But church officials said dancing had taken place in the cathedral for hundreds of years.
“Music went on in churches from dawn until dusk every day – every church, not just the big ones,” said Renshaw. He added that the presence of doom metal was also redolent of the doom paintings in medieval churches, which depicted the Last Judgment, when souls were sent to heaven or hell, as a reminder to the congregation.
Mynett said pipe organs were an important part of our culture that were in danger of being lost.
“Pipe organs are a unique auditory experience – the organ’s resonance fills the space with these rich sonic tapestries,” he said. “And we’re sleepwalking towards losing all of that.”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
50 years on from Waterloo, Abba Voyage rightfully places legendary band in unique hall of fame
Share this with
50 years ago Saturday, a Swedish group changed the face of pop music forever.
And in 2024, there is no better way of truly understanding their influence than at the Abba Arena in East London .
The mere idea of Abba Voyage would have been nothing more than the most far-fetched reaches of sci-fi when Abba first stepped on stage at Eurovision 1974 in Brighton.
Now, watching the Abba-tars perform on stage and talk to audiences between songs, it feels like we’ve invented a time machine.
On Saturday night I headed to Pudding Mill Lane with 3,000 other Abba fans (and one person who declared he didn’t even like Abba, was simply in awe of the technology), to watch Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson at the height of their fame.
It wasn’t my first time at Abba Voyage, but the same goosebumps crept up my arms as the lights shone on the four figures on stage, and remained through the breathtaking 90 minutes of music, moving through all the eras of their iconic career.
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
And it all goes back to the beginning: dressed in the iconic sparkling outfits, an Abba-tar recalls performing Waterloo in Brighton and how, shockingly, the UK awarded them nil points .
The thousands-strong crowd let out a roar of boos, horrified that such a thing could ever have happened.
Because there’s really no one as iconic as Abba: their songs have sparked musicals performed all over the world, star-studded films, and now a groundbreaking futuristic experience unlike anything that’s ever come before.
There are rumours Voyage will be heading to the US and beyond, but a spokesperson assured Metro.co.uk that even if this happens, it will still remain in London.
And thank God for that, because two years on from the opening night in Pudding Mill Lane, the appetite for Abba Voyage is still insatiable: almost everyone I spoke to on the night had been there for the second, third or fourth time, and I’m already looking forward to the next outing.
You also never know who you’ll bump into at a night at Abba Voyage: Saturday night saw Rylan Clark, Mae Muller, Conchita Wurst and Bambie Thug among the revellers, and even Louis Theroux was spotted bopping away to Voulez Vous.
Eurovision is still iconic, but no one before or since has ever had the same impact as Abba did 50 years ago.
Voyage rightfully places them in an individual hall of fame that no other music act can claim.
If you’ve been on the fence or putting off going, this is your sign: Abba Voyage is an utterly unique experience paying tribute to an utterly unique band.
And as soon as the lights come on at the end of the show, you’ll already be planning your next trip, all the way back to Waterloo 1974.

THE ALGORITHM IS OUT NOW!
FILTER’S ‘ THE ALGORITHM’ OUT TODAY !
Platinum-selling, post-industrial/alternative rock pioneers, FILTER release their much-anticipated new album, ‘The Algorithm’, today via Golden Robot Records. The album, their first in seven years, is a tight, conceptual statement heralding career-best songwriting from mastermind Richard Patrick and giving the classic Filter sound a modern sonic edge.
Produced by Patrick and Brian Virtue ( Jane’s Addiction , Thirty Seconds To Mars , Audioslave ), and mixed by Virtue, ‘The Algorithm’ is also a major musical statement, packed full of mini-epics comprising Filter’s signature hooks and soaring, anthemic choruses. But there’s also profuse angles. This is dynamic ear candy to both seduce and shatter speakers.
The triptych of singles released from the album to date highlights the deep form that Patrick and co. are in, from the metallic blowout of first taster, “For The Beaten,” to the sinewy, romo-rock boogie of “Face Down,” and the utterly mammoth current single, “Obliteration.” Other highlights from the most colorful patchwork Filter has created include the gorgeous, sun-kissed pop of “Burn Out The Sun” and the blissful nihilation of the album’s spiritual heart and spacey, solemn closer, “Command Z.”
‘The Algorithm’ is an album of many and varied strengths, with the band sounding as fresh and dynamic as they did on early landmarks ‘Short Bus’ and ‘Title of Record.’ Patrick says of the recording: “ It’s been seven years between albums for Filter and during that time we had to deal with a pandemic. I juggled several film scores and other projects, but I can safely say I am really very proud of ‘The Algorithm. The amount of time I had to make this record gave me the opportunity to work with super talented new people, some of my former bandmates, and even allowed me to explore ideas that have been floating around my own head since ‘Crazy Eyes.’ This record is the best record Filter has made in many years.”

Are your eclipse glasses safe? How to tell before the total solar eclipse.
T he 2024 total solar eclipse is almost here — and if you're hoping to get a glimpse of the phenomenon, it's best to make sure that you have real, working eclipse glasses that can protect your eyes.
Here's what to know about eclipse glasses and how to check that they are safe to use.
Are solar eclipse glasses safe to view the total solar eclipse with?
Solar eclipse glasses can be used to safely view a total solar eclipse , but it's important to make sure they're of the right quality. Don't use sunglasses, smoked glass, an unfiltered telescope and magnifiers or polarized filters as a way to view the eclipse.
The only glasses that should be used to look at a partially eclipsed sun is with eclipse glasses that meet an international standard, ISO 12312-2, according to the American Optometric Association.
That international safety standard, which is set by the International Organization for Standardization , means the glasses reduce visible sunlight to a safe level, and block ultraviolet and infrared radiation, according to the American Astronomical Society website. According to the ISO, the safety standard is reviewed every five years.
Blocking that radiation is important. Ultraviolet, or UV, radiation can damage the cells of the eyes, while the infrared, or IR, radiation can generate heat that causes thermal damage, according to the National Eye Institute .
How to make sure the eclipse glasses you bought are real
Real eclipse glasses will have a note about the international standard somewhere on their body, according to the American Astronomical Society. Before buying, make sure the glasses are advertised as meeting this standard.
If you already bought the glasses, check the arm for the the "ISO 12312-2" label. The standard may also be written as "ISO 12312-2:2015," the AAS says on its website. Either designation means that the glasses will block light and radiation.
The label may be on the flat or curved part of the arm.
NASA has also released guidance on how to test your eclipse glasses. The space agency recommends putting on your glasses and finding a bright light. If the light appears extremely dim, or doesn't appear at all, when you look at it through the glasses, they are legitimate. You should only be able to see the filament of the bulb, not its glow.
How to avoid buying fake solar eclipse glasses
Checking for the international standard isn't foolproof: It's possible for sellers with products who do not meet the standard to label their eyewear with it anyway. To avoid this, make sure you're ordering glasses from a reliable source.
The American Astronomical Society advises against ordering from Amazon, Temu or other online marketplaces, and recommends against ordering if prices seem to be too good to be true. The AAS also said it's best to purchase from manufacturers based in the United States. CBS News previously reported that counterfeit glasses have been sold by companies based overseas.
The organization maintains a list of reputable vendors of solar eclipse glasses. CBS News previously reported that NASA supports the American Astronomical Society 's work, though the space agency does not maintain its own list of vendors.
The ISO, the body that established the international standard for eclipse glasses, also sells them on its website.
Why it's important to double-check older solar eclipse glasses
If you're reusing glasses from a previous solar eclipse, it's important to double-check that they are still in good condition. NASA warns against using glasses that have any marks or scratches on them. This damage can diminish the protection they offer. Glasses that have punctured lenses should also not be used.
Glasses that are more than three years old should not be used to view the 2024 total solar eclipse, according to the National Eye Institute — so if you saved your glasses from the 2017 eclipse, you may want to think about finding a new pair.
How to make sure your homemade eclipse viewing tool is safe
If you're not buying glasses, it is possible to make an indirect viewing method for viewing the eclipse at home. An indirect viewing method means that you don't look directly at the sun so your eyes remain protected even without eyewear.
NASA recommends making a pinhole projector, which uses a small opening like a hole punched in an index card, to project an image of the sun onto a nearby surface. When using a pinhole projector, keep the sun at your back and view the projected image to safely see the eclipse. However, to do this safely, it's important to make sure to avoid actually looking at the sun itself.
