Flobots (formed in 2000) is an American alternative/indie rock and hip hop group, who found commercial success with their 2007 record “Fight with Tools”, hailing from Denver, Colorado, U.S.

Adopting the politically-apt punkish tone of Rage Against the Machine with a rap delivery reminiscent of the Roots and Common, Flobots was founded in 2000. Having met during elementary school MCs Johnny Five (Jamie Laurie) and Brer Rabbit (Stephen Brackett) later invited guitarist Andy Guerrero, viola player Mackenzie Roberts, trumpeter Joe Ferrone, bassist Jesse Walker, and drummer Kenny Ortiz to complete the lineup. Flobots’ debut EP “Platypus” arrived in October 2005 introducing the band’s playful yet conscious voice.

Two years later in 2007 the group released their debut studio album “Fight with Tools”, earning a host of radio play, exposure and popularity in their home state of Colorado. Thanks to this newfound popularity, notably with the album’s lead single “Handlebars” the band signed with Universal Republic who reissued the album in 2008. Flobots subsequently opened for the likes of Public Enemy and the Fray in their hometown of Denver, before the increased exposure afforded the band to tour further afield. Upon “Handlebars’” official release in April 2008 the single peaked at No. 3 on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, and resulted in the band making their television debut on “Last Call with Carson Daly” in May that year.

In 2009 Flobots returned to the studio, the fruit of which became their sophomore album “Survival Story” released in March 2010. Despite production from Mario Caldato, Jr. known for his work with the Beastie Boys, and a feature from Tim McIlrath of Rise Against, the album earned disappointing reviews from music critics. Led by the popular single “White Flag Warrior” the album peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard 200, after which guitarist Andy Guerrero departed the group. The band’s third full-length “The Circle in the Square” was issued in 2012 by Shanachie, led by the album’s eponymous lead single.

Live reviews

I saw Flobots a few years ago in Glasgow when thy opened for Rise Against and Anti Flag. Admittedly I was skeptical on how’d they’d fit in. Anti Flag are legends, Rise Against crush it every time.

Well let me tell you, I was blown away, Flobots actually put on the best show of the night. Of course Handlebars is their most well known song. Well they really threw a wrench at me when it the solo part which typically is on a trumpet I Believe was done by a gorgeous redhead on the violin. It was fantastic, it added a whole new dimension to the song, I just loved it. I actually think it was better with the violin than the trumpet in the studio version of the song.

The Flobots actually had so much energy during their performance too, they seemed to truly be enjoying the performance. It really is unfortunate that the only song of theirs to have any popularity is Handlebars, as other songs, like Fight with Tools and Rise are honestly so much better. If you’re looking for a fun time go check out Flobots, if you’re looking for some great head banging music, they would also fit your style at times. Flobots, highly recommended, go check them out! I can ride my Bike with No Handlebars!

Second show we have seen at Harlow's, and every time, the performers make great use of this intimate venue. The opener, Bang Data, set the perfect tone for the Flobots by bringing in the crowd close to the stage for the last few songs. Flobots picked up right where Bang Data left off by calling the crowd in close and engaging us at every opportunity. The energy stayed high through the whole show, and we danced and sang the night away. So glad they are back on the road and made Sacramento a stop on their tour!

The Moscow City Tourism Committee organizes conference for key stakeholders from Indian MICE market

Business tourism is one of the most promising directions for Moscow. In 2023, the capital was visited by 3.7 million business tourists – 7% more than in 2022. And India remains one of the leaders among visitors from non-CIS countries in terms of the number of business travelers. The Moscow City Tourism Committee recognized the market demands and organized the Shaping MICE Future Conference for representatives of the Indian MICE industry, to introduce them to the tourism strengths of the Russian capital. The event took place on April 19 in Delhi and brought together over 100 participants from MICE agencies of both countries, corporate customers, representatives of the travel industry in Moscow, Aeroflot and the Indian branches of Sberbank.

“The Russian capital as a center of business tourism and corporate events is already an established and a strong brand in the international arena,” – commented Anastasia Popova, Deputy General Director for International and Industry Cooperation of Project Office for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality in Moscow. – Now our task is to demonstrate to our Indian partners all the possibilities of organizing high value MICE events in Moscow in combination with already proven tourist programs”.

At the Shaping MICE Future Conference industry experts from Russia and India pronounced statements and speeches on the future of MICE events in these two countries, a presentation of the MICE potential of Moscow was showcased, and an analytical report on the state of the outbound MICE market in India was presented to the visitors. During the panel discussion participants assessed the current status and interaction peculiarities with the MICE market in India, and developed recommendations for the MICE industry in Moscow during the general brainstorming session. Representatives of the Indian MICE industry participated in B2B negotiations to find new cross-partners in the Moscow business environment and among representatives of the hospitality industry.

The Moscow City Tourism Committee

Representatives of the MICE industry took part in the event from Moscow. Among them were DMC ( Grand Rus , Academservice, Headed Goose, Satguru Travel , Isba Rus, Hug the Bear, Millennium Group )) as well as representatives of other partners interested in the development of MICE cooperation between Russia and India: Global transfers provider i’way and hotels Edge Seligerskaya & Edge Vinogradovo Moscow by Rotana.

“In 2024, we have witnessed a significant surge (more than quadruple) in the demand for transfers by Russians visiting India, both for business and leisure purposes. Muscovites are leading the trend, with 80% of transfer bookings originating from the capital since the beginning of the year. Additionally, we observe a growing interest from Indian tourism agencies in exploring Russia, resulting in a substantial increase in our collaboration,” commented Dmitriy Saraykin, co-founder of Global Transfer Provider i’way.

The Shaping MICE Future conference allowed the Moscow City Tourism Committee to form a pool of MICE industry representatives in Moscow to prioritize incoming requests for events, clarify India’s requirements for business and corporate events to build mutually effective work. Indian colleagues received up-to-date information about Moscow as a safe and attractive MICE destination, and were able to find potential partners among representatives of the MICE industry of the Russian capital and were able to present the MICE market in India.

“The event served as a remarkable platform for fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration within the tourism industry. The event provided us with invaluable opportunities to engage with key stakeholders from the tourism department, as well as tour operators and service providers. The insights gained during the event underscored the Moscow City Tourism Committee’s keen interest in the Indian outbound market, and we are optimistic about the promising prospects for Moscow as a destination, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape. We firmly believe that with concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, Moscow has the potential to emerge as a top-choice destination for Indian tourists,” shared Mudit Mathur, director of Tours Delite India, representing Academ Service – Russia in India.

The conference also assessed the solutions to foreign demand for non-standard venues and elements in MICE programs, such as museums, parks, theaters and others. Holding MICE events at offbeat locations, such as the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Planetarium and Khudozhestvenny Cinema, is becoming popular. This helps to attract conference organizers and creates a unique experience for the participants. Working in this format, many visitors who came to Moscow on a business trip want to return with their families and spend time as regular tourists.

In 2023, 60 thousand guests from India visited Moscow – a quarter more than a year earlier. This year, according to the results of January and February India entered the top 5 countries in terms of the volume of e-visas issued. E-visa was one of the significant factors in the recovery of demand for hotel services and high utilization (76%) of Moscow hotels in 2023 and, as a consequence, the growth of international tourist traffic, the activation of business and classical tourists from India, China, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and so on.

One of the significant initiatives launched to support the growth of the tourist flow is the Moscow MICE Ambassadors Program – an online certification program for representatives of the Indian market, which aims to create demand for Moscow as a MICE destination. The Moscow City Tourism Committee and NIMA (Network of Indian MICE Agents) jointly launched the pilot project last year. The first 50 people from the Indian side who underwent the training and learned the intricacies of organizing business events in the Russian capital have received the relevant certificates. In 2024, the program will be made available to other MICE operators as well and is expected to expand to a total of 200 Moscow MICE Ambassadors by the end of the year.

By the numbers: Statistics confirm Scottie Scheffler's historical dominance

Change Text Size

Is impending fatherhood the only thing stopping Scottie Scheffler? Quite possibly.

His historic run continued Monday when he completed his victory at the RBC Heritage. It was his fourth win in his past five starts, a run that also included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. The only exception was a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where he missed a 6-footer to join Stephan Jaeger in a playoff.

Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 highlights From RBC Heritage

Scheffler has seemed invincible lately, and the statistics confirm that. Here’s a closer look at some of the key stats that put Scheffler’s historic play into perspective:

  • By winning at Harbour Town Golf Links, Scheffler became the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the RBC Heritage one week after winning the Masters .
  • Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the week after winning a major .
  • With four wins and a runner-up in his past five starts, Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007-08 to have five consecutive top-two finishes . Vijay Singh is the only other player to have such a run in the past 30 years (2004).
  • This was Scheffler’s 10th PGA TOUR victory, coming in just his 51st start since he earned his first win at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Only David Duval has needed fewer starts after his first win to reach victory No. 10. Duval did it in 33 starts. Tiger Woods is third on the list with 59 starts.
  • In his 51 starts since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler also has 23 top-three finishes (45%) and 35 top-10s (68.6%).
  • All 10 of Scheffler’s wins have come since the start of the 2021-22 season. He is the first player to win 10 (or more) times on the PGA TOUR in the span of three seasons since Dustin Johnson won 10 titles between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  • This is Scheffler’s fourth win of the season, matching his career-high from 2022. He is the fourth player with multiple four-win seasons since the start of 2000 , joining Woods (10), Singh, (3) and Phil Mickelson (2).
  • Scheffler has now recorded 40 consecutive TOUR rounds at par or better , a streak that began in the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. He’s 12 back of Woods’ all-time TOUR mark of 52 straight rounds at par or better (set across 2000-01).
  • In each of Scheffler’s last seven victories, eight or more of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have been in the field . His most recent run of four wins in five starts has included two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage), THE PLAYERS and the Masters.
  • Scheffler is averaging 5.38 birdies per round this season, on pace to set the all-time TOUR record for single-season birdie average (since the statistic was first tracked in 1980) . Woods set the current record (4.92) in 2020.
  • In his 39 rounds this season, he has outperformed the field average 35 times . He’s been at least a shot better than the field 30 times, at least two shots better 26 times and at least three shots better 19 times.
  • Scheffler leads the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by nearly a shot per round this season , after finishing atop the category by more than two-thirds of a stroke per round last season. No player had previously led the category by more than four-tenths of a stroke per round since Woods in 2009.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour took over Houston in 2023. Can The Rolling Stones top it?

T he Rolling Stones tour is set to make a stop at NRG Stadium Sunday for the band’s first Houston concert since 2019. The performance comes on the heels of an album release by another music legend — Taylor Swift — whose three-day stop in Houston one year ago received shows of appreciation from fans and elected officials alike.

With the Stones' Hackney Diamonds Tour underway and Swift's 11th studio album , "The Tortured Poets Department,” that dropped last week, both music industry icons maintain dedicated fanbases worldwide.

The 1960s rock n' roll band has been performing for decades. The Stones hold a record for drawing one of the largest crowds in rock n’ roll history during a show in Rio de Janeiro , with 1.5 million people, PBS reported. Swift is no stranger to large crowds either, with one of her shows in Melbourne seeing more than 96,000 people, according to Deadline.

However, both music artists made their mark in Houston during their most recent concerts: the Stones' No Filter Tour in 2019 and Swift's Eras Tour in 2023. The success of their concerts highlighted their strong fanbases in the Bayou City.

TAYLOR SWIFT : Here's a look at Texas ties to the latest release 'The Tortured Poets Department'

How did the city react to The Rolling Stones' 2019 concert?

Excited fans first caught on to the Rolling Stones’ planned 2019 Houston concert when NRG Park teased the tour stop in an email. Park officials sent an email to subscribers with the band's logo at the end of the email and no further explanation.

The 2019 show would be the Stones’ first Houston appearance in more than 10 years. The group even teamed up with the NFL for a Houston Texans—Rolling Stones jersey.

NRG Stadium officials said the venue is happy to have the band back any time.

"We're thrilled to host the legendary Rolling Stones at NRG Stadium as the first stop on their Hackney Diamonds Tour. As Mick Jagger might say, 'Start me up' – and what better place to kick off this iconic tour than right here in Houston? We look forward to welcoming fans from near and far to enjoy a night of timeless rock 'n' roll classics. Get ready to rock the night away at NRG Stadium!" stadium officials said in a statement.

How did the city react to Taylor Swift's 2023 concert?

Houston was the second city on Swift's Eras Tour .

A marketing campaign was launched to temporarily rename NRG Stadium to "NRG Stadium - Taylor's Version," initiated by NRG Park and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo's office. Banners were placed with the temporary name on the stadium's north and south entrances.

The City Hall also honored Swift and her mother, a University of Houston alum, by lighting the building in a “lavender haze.”

How many tickets were sold at The Rolling Stones' 2019 concert?

The Rolling Stones had to postpone their 2019 No Filter Tour dates in North America because of Mick Jagger’s heart surgery. But the rescheduled concert still brought in more than 40,000 fans for its one-night stop in Houston.

How many tickets were sold at Taylor Swift's 2023 concert?

During Taylor Swift's three sold-out performances at NRG Stadium, more than 180,000 tickets were distributed, which averaged about 60,000 a day.

NRG CONCERTS : The Rolling Stones announce Houston set for next spring

The impact of The Rolling Stones' 2019 concert in Houston

The organization Houston First found that the hotel market revenue during the Stones’ concert was $16 million between July 26-28, 2019. The occupancy was about 64%.

The impact of Taylor Swift's 2023 concert in Houston

The impact of Taylor Swift's three-day tour in Houston wasn't only shown through the name change at NRG Stadium, but also in the economic impact.

Her tour happened the same weekend as a large convention downtown which likely contributed to the boost in Houston’s market, according to Houston First. Still, the organization found that the hotel market revenue was a whopping $34 million between April 21-23, 2023, which was a 30% increase from the same three days in 2022. The occupancy was about 78%.

Russian minister detained over bribery accusations, says Moscow law enforcement

Timur Ivanov, a Russian deputy defense minister, was detained on Wednesday and faces up to 15 years in prison for bribe-taking.

This grab from a handout footage taken and released by Moscow City Court press service on April 24, 2024 shows Timur Ivanov, Russian deputy Defense Minister, standing in a glass cage at the Basmanny District Court in Moscow.

A Russian deputy defense minister exposed in an investigation by late opposition leader Alexei Navalny's team was remanded in custody Wednesday, April 24, on suspicion of taking large bribes.

Timur Ivanov, 48, oversaw construction and procurement for the armed forces, and was linked to Russia's high-profile rebuilding of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, occupied by Moscow's forces. "The deputy defense minister of the Russian Federation was sent to a pre-trial detention center," the press service for Moscow courthouses said in a statement on social media.

The arrest of Ivanov, a long-time ally of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, is the most dramatic corruption case in Russia in recent years. It comes as spending on the military has ballooned amid its offensive on Ukraine.

He faces up to 15 years in prison for bribe-taking "on a particularly large scale," it added. Ivanov denies the charges, his lawyer told the state-run TASS news agency. Several independent Russian media outlets have alleged that Ivanov and his family acquired vast wealth through kick-backs on contracts he agreed at the ministry.

Lavish lifestyle

In December 2022, Navalny's team said they had obtained thousands of leaked emails from Ivanov's wife, Svetlana Maniovich, that showed a lavish lifestyle well beyond what his official salary could cover.

They said she had spent hundreds of thousands of euros on luxury cars, jewelry, clothes, parties, and renting premium property and yachts in the south of France. Some of the transactions were routed through third parties, including defense ministry contractors, they alleged.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin was in "constant" contact with Shoigu but refused to comment directly on Ivanov's arrest. "There will be an investigation," spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, cautioning against "speculation."

In court on Wednesday, Ivanov, 48, stood in a glass dock for defendants in military uniform. The court said investigators believe he was part of a "criminal conspiracy" to take a "bribe on a particularly large scale in the form of property services, during the course of contracting and subcontracting work for the defense ministry." It did not provide further details.

The judge sent him to pre-trial detention until at least June 23. He will be held at the notorious Lefortovo jail in Moscow, TASS reported.

'Shoigu's deputy'

Campaigners, including Navalny, have long argued that corruption is endemic in Putin's Russia. Arrests of high-profile government figures are rare, usually the result of political infighting, analysts say.

Activists say the vast sums being poured into the Ukraine offensive has given officials new opportunities to enrich themselves through secretive procurement deals.

Russian military bloggers, who have long criticized Shoigu's handling of the offensive, quickly linked Ivanov to the defense minister on social media. In a post criticizing Ivanov, Wagner-linked Telegram channel Grey Zone repeatedly referred to him as "Shoigu's Deputy." "He, like Shoigu, comes from the family clan," it said. Former Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin had accused Shoigu and other defense ministry officials of corruption and incompetence before his mysterious death last year.

The defense ministry has not commented on Ivanov's arrest.

Just hours before investigators announced they had arrested Ivanov on Tuesday he had appeared in video footage published by the ministry in which Shoigu addressed top military brass about the state of the Ukraine offensive.

Moscow's growing appeal for business tourism: India prominent player.

Moscow is rapidly emerging as a key destination for business tourism, with a significant increase in the number of business tourists visiting the capital. In 2023 alone, Moscow welcomed 3.7 million business travelers, marking a 7% rise from the previous year. Among the leading nations contributing to this growth, India stands out as a prominent player in the non-CIS category.

Recognizing the importance of fostering partnerships and showcasing Moscow’s potential as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination, the Moscow City Tourism Committee organized the Shaping MICE Future Conference in Delhi. The event aimed to introduce Indian MICE industry representatives to the diverse offerings of the Russian capital.

Moscow City Tourism Committee organizes conference for Indian MICE market stakeholders

New Delhi [India], April 24 (ANI): Recognising market demand, the Moscow City Tourism Committee organized a conference for representatives of the Indian MICE industry, to introduce them to the tourism strengths of the Russian capital.

MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions, and is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually plan things well in advance.

The event took place on April 19 in Delhi and brought together over 100 participants from MICE agencies of both countries, corporate customers, representatives of the travel industry in Moscow, Aeroflot and the Indian branches of Sberbank.

Business tourism is one of the most promising directions for Moscow.

In 2023, the capital was visited by 3.7 million business tourists – 7 per cent more than in 2022. And India remains one of the leaders among visitors from non-CIS countries in terms of the number of business travellers.

“The Russian capital as a centre of business tourism and corporate events is already an established and a strong brand in the international arena,” commented Anastasia Popova, Deputy General Director for International and Industry Cooperation of Project Office for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality in Moscow.

“Now our task is to demonstrate to our Indian partners all the possibilities of organizing high-value MICE events in Moscow in combination with already proven tourist programs,” said Popova.

At the Shaping MICE Future Conference, industry experts from Russia and India pronounced statements and speeches on the future of MICE events in these two countries, a presentation of the MICE potential of Moscow was showcased, and an analytical report on the state of the outbound MICE market in India was presented to the visitors.

During the panel discussion, participants assessed the current status and interaction peculiarities with the MICE market in India and developed recommendations for the MICE industry in Moscow during the general brainstorming session.

Representatives of the Indian MICE industry participated in B2B negotiations to find new cross-partners in the Moscow business environment and among representatives of the hospitality industry.

Representatives of the MICE industry took part in the event from Moscow.

Among them were DMC (Grand Rus, Academservice, Headed Goose, Satguru Travel, Isba Rus, Hug the Bear, Mellenium Group) as well as representatives of other partners interested in the development of MICE cooperation between Russia and India: Global transfers provider i’way and hotels Edge Seligerskaya and Edge Vinogradovo Moscow by Rotana.

“In 2024, we have witnessed a significant surge (more than quadruple) in the demand for transfers by Russians visiting India, both for business and leisure purposes. Muscovites are leading the trend, with 80 per cent of transfer bookings originating from the capital since the beginning of the year. Additionally, we observe a growing interest from Indian tourism agencies in exploring Russia, resulting in a substantial increase in our collaboration,” commented Dmitriy Saraykin, co-founder of Global Transfer Provider i’way.

The Shaping MICE Future conference allowed the Moscow City Tourism Committee to form a pool of MICE industry representatives in Moscow to prioritize incoming requests for events and clarify India’s requirements for business and corporate events to build mutually effective work. Indian colleagues received up-to-date information about Moscow as a safe and attractive MICE destination and were able to find potential partners among representatives of the MICE industry of the Russian capital and were able to present the MICE market in India.

We firmly believe that with concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, Moscow has the potential to emerge as a top-choice destination for Indian tourists,” said Mudit Mathur, director of Tours Delite India, representing Academ Service – Russia in India.

Working in this format, many visitors who come to Moscow on a business trip want to return with their families and spend time as regular tourists. (ANI)
